Things to do in London

London’s top attractions go beyond Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the London Eye. One trip to the capital and you’ll soon see it holds much more than you imagined.

Where to eat

Munch on pie and mash

A must for any foodie visiting London is trying one of its most-famous delicacies: pie and mash. From Rules in Covent Garden to Pieminister in Farringdon, you’ve got plenty of choice – just remember to save room for the big serving of traditional liquor that’ll be poured over the top.

Sip on afternoon tea at the British Museum

If you’re going to travel to London, you can’t leave without enjoying a spot of afternoon tea. Book yourself a table in the British Museum’s Great Court Restaurant. Situated under the iconic glass roof, it’s definitely one of the most memorable ways to eat scones, jam and clotted cream.

Take the family to the Rainforest Café

With its dazzling waterfalls, epic special effects and mass of animatronic animals, one minute you’ll be walking around London, the next you’ll feel like you’re in the jungle. Perfect for a family meal, the menu comprises a mix of American and international cuisine. Sample dishes such as steak, ribs, burgers, pastas and salads before trying one of the mouth-watering desserts.

Where to drink

The trendy bars of East London

A favourite amongst East London locals, Dream Bags Jaguar Shoes is a bar, event space, nightclub and gallery all rolled into a neon ball of fun. Plus, with plenty of quirky cocktails and specialist food nights, you'll be well fuelled for the party. If you’re partial to a spot of board-gaming, take your friends to Draughts, the board game café in Haggerston that turns into a lively bar at night. Perhaps you’re in the mood for a big night, in which case bars such as The Book Club and Queen of Hoxton are always buzzing with hip locals.

The edgy underground bars of Soho

The streets of Soho may be full of revellers, but you’ll find just as much going on underground. A top choice is Cahoots, the retro Tube-themed bar with an extensive drinks list that makes for a memorable night. Other favourites include the Experimental Cocktail Club, a speakeasy-style club hidden in Chinatown, and the range of gay pubs and bars that guarantee to deliver a fun, friendly atmosphere.

The big names in clubbing

Want to experience the giants of London’s club scene? Following the revival of Fabric, the capital’s premier venue for electronic music, there are tons of great nights to choose from at this superclub. For options south of the river, Ministry of Sound in Vauxhall and Corsica Studios in Elephant and Castle are much smaller, but home to an equally exciting mix of up-and-coming DJ and live music nights.

Where to shop

Camden Passage, Islington

Camden Passage is overflowing with cute cafés, independent boutiques and vintage shops. Pick up everything from exquisite one-offs to fun party outfits before browsing the antiques market for affordable furniture, curios, war memorabilia and various bric-a-brac.

Spitalfields Market

Lovers of fashion and food will feel right at home here. Situated in an area that’s long been associated with traders’ markets, Spitalfields’ heritage as a place to unearth the best bargains sets it apart from most markets in London. Brilliant for a day’s browsing, haggling or just enjoying the amazing variety of food options.

Westfield Stratford

Shopaholics are also well catered to, with the options at Westfield’s two London shopping centres in Stratford and White City just as good as Oxford or Regent Street. All the big brand high street stores are available alongside luxury retailers, while the mall also has an events calendar that’s sure to keep you entertained regardless of what you’re into.

London Designer Outlet

Offering some of the world's biggest brands, London Designer Outlet is the ideal place to find a hidden gem for less. Plus, with it being sat right next to Wembley Stadium, if you book event travel to Wembley with us you'll get an extra 10% discount at LDO. The savings have started already!

Other tourist attractions

Buckingham Palace

Just a short walk from Victoria Coach Station, Buckingham Palace is one of London’s most iconic landmarks and the official London residence of the Royals. It’s also one of the best spots to take a winning photo. Try to get there in time for the daily Changing of the Guard, one of the capital’s must-see spectacles – it starts around 11.30am and lasts 45 minutes.

Trafalgar Square

Here you can spot a variety of famous landmarks, including Nelson’s Column, King George IV statue, St. Martins-in-the-Fields church and the fountains, while the more curious among you should pop in to the nearby National Gallery to find a world of exhibits ready to explore. If you’re walking from the station, there are plenty of places to enjoy a bite to eat along the way.

Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and more

It takes less than half an hour to walk from Victoria Coach Station to the iconic Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. You’ll be right next to the London Eye too, where you can take in views of the capital as far as the eye can see. There’s also Westminster Abbey, Winston Churchill’s statue, Downing Street and St James’s Park, all within walking distance.

Things to do for kids

Take them deer spotting in Richmond Park

Anyone who thinks of London as an urban jungle hasn’t explored the range of beautiful parks dotted around the city which are full of stunning wildlife. If the weather’s on your side, take your little ones for a day out in Richmond Park – it’s just a 16-minute train from Waterloo, and you may even spot a deer or three.

Let them loose in an interactive indoor city

The perfect rainy day activity, KidZania is like stepping into a whole new world – a world that’s run by children. Blending learning and fun, this indoor city in Westfield London lets kids try their hand at more than 60 real-life activities – one minute they could be mastering the art of chocolate-making in the factory, and the next assembling a car at the engineering centre.

Culture them with a range of family-friendly exhibitions

If museums are what you’re after, then we’ve got three that offer the ideal mix of education and family fun. In under half an hour’s walk from Victoria Station, you could be introducing your kids to the world’s greatest art and design collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, enjoying high-tech interactive displays and games at the Natural History Museum, or getting lost in a wealth of exhibits that are sure to excite and inspire all ages at the Science Museum.

London in one day

Hidden gems.

St Dunstan in the East

This church in the City of London was bombed in The Blitz, but rather than being restored, the ruins were turned into a free public garden. Today, the stunning space is open to the public daily and is ideal for a picnic and, of course, some fantastic photographs.

Kyoto Garden

Holland Park is beautiful in itself, but venture a little deeper and you’ll stumble across Kyoto Garden, gorgeous Japanese-style gardens full of exotic flowers, waterfalls and lanterns. Perfect for those looking for more tranquil weekend attractions.

Wilton’s is said to be the oldest music hall in London and still holds performances to this day. It may look slightly worn and weathered, but this only adds to the charm and beauty of the hall; a must-see for music fans and history buffs alike.

How to Travel the UK on the Cheap

Adventurous Kate contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I will earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks!

The UK is one of the most expensive countries in Europe — and if you’re planning a trip, you might be daunted by the cost of transportation within the UK.

But it is very possible to travel the UK for cheap!

Since settling in Chester, I’ve found a host of ways to save money on transportation.  And all of them have one thing in common:

BOOK EARLY.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re traveling by train, bus, or air — booking early will nearly always save you money, and booking last minute will always be exponentially more expensive.

Now that that’s out of the way, here are some ways to save money on different kinds of UK transportation:

cheapest coach travel in uk

Cheap UK Train Travel

Train travel in the UK is incredibly romantic, and you can easily watch the scenery go by for hours — bright green hills, sheep, newly plowed fields, tiny villages…it’s my favorite way to travel the UK.

Most of the time, it’s also the easiest and fastest way to travel — though not the cheapest.

If you’re not a UK resident and planning on traveling lots of long distances in the UK by train, look into a Britrail Pass .  If you’re just booking occasional journeys, read on.

Check the Megatrain and Virgin Train sites first for absurdly cheap train routes.  These two sites tend to promote the same routes.

Next, no matter which destination you choose, check out The Trainline’s Fare Finder — it will show you the cheapest tickets for various dates and times.  Either way, booking on The Trainline is usually cheaper than other sites.

On all the aforementioned sites, you buy tickets online, then use the same credit card to retrieve your tickets at the station.

What to know:  Be flexible on stations.  I was looking for Chester-Edinburgh round-trip fares and couldn’t find anything for less than an astounding £150.  Then I found out that there are cheap fares on Megatrain from Warrington Bank Quay to Glasgow, a short trip from Edinburgh.  I had never heard of Warrington Bank Quay, but it’s only a few stops away from Chester!

I paid normal fares from Chester to Warrington and from Glasgow to Edinburgh — but from Warrington to Glasgow, the longest part of the journey, I found a super-cheap £9 fare.

Cheap UK Coach Travel

The thing about bus (or coach) travel is that you need to evaluate the positives and negatives.  Yes, bus travel can be much cheaper than the train, but it can also take a lot longer, and most find it less pleasant (though all the coaches I’ve seen have been immaculate).

I usually book a coach when traveling from Chester to London.  The fastest trip is five hours (while the train takes 2.5 hours and costs at least three times as much).   To me, five hours on a bus is definitely doable, while 11 hours to Scotland is not worth it.  I may have managed a 32-hour bus journey in Southeast Asia , but I have no intentions of repeating that here!

First, check out Megabus for the cheapest fares of the bunch, then check out National Express  for cheap fares but more convenient times.

What to know:  Again, book as early as possible, especially on Megabus — they even have £1 fares!  Also, keep in mind that you must wear a seatbelt at all times — it’s UK law.

cheapest coach travel in uk

Cheap UK Air Travel

I wouldn’t recommend air travel in the UK most of the time — the sheer act of flying requires so much more time and effort, that it’s not worth it.  But it can be useful for exceptionally large distances, like London to Aberdeen or Inverness.

My go-to flight search engine is Kayak  because it’s the best.  Be sure to check airline sites as well for unpublished fares.  Budget airline  Easyjet has several domestic routes in the UK.

What to know: Budget airlines usually fly at inconvenient times from out-of-the-way airports. Take this into account and make sure you have someone to drive you, or your Uber might be more expensive.

Creative UK Travel Options

None of these float your fancy?  There are a few other options.  Rideshare sites are growing more popular in the UK.  My friend Dylan swears by hitchhiking.  And you could also do Britain’s most intimidating walk: Land’s End to John O’Groats (also known as walking from Great Britain’s lower left corner to its upper right corner.)

One thing that I’d love to do: rent a narrow boat in Chester and travel by the canals in the northwest, going through canal locks and everything!

The one thing you should NOT skip to save money in the UK? Travel insurance ! I never travel with it and it will save you a lot of money if something happens on your trip. I use and recommend World Nomads.

Brand new scenic train route in northern UK to launch tomorrow – and tickets are cheap

  • Ryan Gray , Travel Reporter

  • Published : Invalid Date,

A BRAND new train route is launching across the north of the UK this weekend, making some of the country's best scenery more accessible for Brits.

The Yorkshire Dales is one of the most scenic spots the UK has to offer and a new affordable train route will now make them much easier to explore.

The new route will run through the Yorkshire Dales

Northern Rail is bringing back its Yorkshire Dales Explorer route, with new services set to depart for the first time tomorrow (Saturday, June 8).

A similar route called the Dales Rail had been cut last summer , with Northern reportedly unable to provide sufficient staff to keep it up and running.

However, the new service, which will run twice on Saturdays, is set to replace the axed route and once again provide links between the destinations on its line.

The train will set off from Rochdale and will travel all the way to Ribblehead .

Yorkshire Dales National Park authority member Lizzie Bushby said she was looking forward to seeing the views from the train, as well as having the service open the park to visitors.

She added: “We’re really pleased that Northern is running this service.

Sun Travel's favourite train journeys in the world

Sun Travel's journalists have taken their fare share of train journeys on their travels and here they share their most memorable rail experiences.

Davos to Geneva, Switzerland

"After a ski holiday in Davos, I took the scenic train back to Geneva Airport. The snow-covered mountains and tiny alpine villages that we passed were so beautiful that it felt like a moving picture was playing beyond the glass." - Caroline McGuire

Tokyo to Kyoto by Shinkansen

"Nothing quite beats the Shinkansen bullet train, one of the fastest in the world. It hardly feels like you're whizzing along at speed until you look outside and see the trees a green blur. Make sure to book seat D or E too - as you'll have the best view of Mount Fuji along the way." Kara Godfrey

London to Paris by Eurostar

"Those who have never travelled on the Eurostar may wonder what’s so special about a seemingly ordinary train that takes you across the channel. You won’t have to waste a moment and can tick off all the top attractions from the Louvre to the Champs-Élysées which are both less than five kilometres from the Gare du Nord." - Sophie Swietochowski

Glasgow to Fort William by Scotrail

"From mountain landscapes and serene lochs to the wistful moors, I spent my three-hour journey from Glasgow to Fort William gazing out the window. Sit on the left-hand side of the train for the best views overlooking Loch Lomond." - Hope Brotherton

Beijing to Ulaanbatar

"The Trans-Mongolian Express is truly a train journey like no other. It starts amid the chaos of central Beijing before the city's high-rises give way to crumbling ancient villages and eventually the vast vacant plains of Mongolia, via the Gobi desert. The deep orange sunset seen in the middle of the desert is among the best I've witnessed anywhere." - Ryan Gray

They described the stretch of track running between Settle and  Carlisle  as the most scenic on the continent.

In their opinion, the scenery that can be seen from the windows on that particular route is by far the best out of any of the other train routes available.

They wrote: "The views from the carriages are pretty much unmatched on the English railway network.

"Passengers can feast their eyes on mile after mile of magnificent  Yorkshire Dales  and North Pennines scenery, interrupted only by stations so sweet you would expect to find them pictured on a box of biscuits."

Stephen Flynn and Nigel Farage are clashing over the NHS, after a BBC debate audience member asked how to ensure the NHS is fully functioning.

Mr Flynn accuses Mr Farage of looking to privatise it as the Reform leader says the "model isn't working".

Mr Farage called for the NHS to be "managed like as if it was a private company".

The Liberal democrats Daisy Cooper says what makes a difference "most of all" is the amount of money put into the health service, rather than the model.

The Green's Carla Denyer agrees the NHS has been "chronically underfunded for decades" and this "cannot be allowed to continue".

Inviting multinational companies further into the NHS is not the answer to protect it, she says, adding investment in needed in social care to take pressure off the NHS.

To fund it, the super-rich need to pay "quite a modest amount" to fund the services that "benefit all of us", she says.

Moving away from Politics Hub for the moment, and leading figures from seven UK political parties are going head-to-head at the BBC's election debate.

Conservative leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt has already said Rishi Sunak's decision to leave D-Day 80th anniversary events early was "completely wrong".

"The prime minister has rightly apologised for that, apologised to veterans but also to all of us, because he was representing all of us.

"I'm from Portsmouth, I have also been defence secretary and my wish is, at the end of this week, is that all of our veterans feel completely treasured."

She is joined at the debate by:

  • Angela Rayner, Labour's shadow deputy prime minister
  • Daisy Cooper, Liberal Democrat deputy leader
  • Nigel Farage, Reform UK's leader
  • Stephen Flynn, the SNP's Westminster leader
  • Carla Denyer, co-leader of the Green Party in England and Wales
  • Rhun ap Iorwerth, leader of Welsh party Plaid Cymru

A chaotic end to a chaotic day for the Tory campaign.

Public engagements can be risky at the best of time, never mind when you're trailing badly in the polls with four weeks until voting day.

You'd have hoped a somewhat closed-off event for Tory members in the safe Wiltshire countryside might have passed off without any bother.

Not so - on what turned into Rishi Sunak's worst day of the campaign so far.

As it turned out, the subject being raised by the heckler was quite specific and certainly not a cut and dry dressing down of the broad Tory record on the NHS.

The prime minister's response - while a little robotic - was characteristically detailed and fluent.

Yes, at one point he laughed - but only when another man interrupted to say GPs spent "more time on holiday than in the surgery".

Some in the crowd cheered at Rishi Sunak's response, while others were clearly angry at the attention being sucked up by one lone woman.

The heckler later told reporters she was still a Tory member and hadn't ruled out voting Conservative.

At the end of a torrid day for the prime minister, this was clearly a very unwelcome intervention.

But a frequent refrain from many is that campaigns are too controlled and choreographed and politicians should spend more time interacting with real people.

Well, for better or for worse, that happened today.

Shadow secretary of state for international development, Lisa Nandy, is next on the Politics Hub.

She says meetings between senior Labour figures finalising the details of its manifesto were "really positive and constructive".

Politics Hub host Ali Fortescue asks how they can be positive if Unite the Union, the country's biggest union and the Labour party's biggest donor, did not endorse the manifesto.

"It was a constructive meeting. I think everybody would agree, including Unite, that there's lots in the manifesto that we can honestly all say hand on heart will transform the prospects for working people in this country," replies Ms Nandy.

She says different views were put forward in the room, but their was a "resounding yes" for the agreed manifesto.

Asked if there is a tension with Unite, Ms Nandy says: "I wouldn't describe it as a tension, I would describe it as a constructive discussion."

Palestinian statehood

She goes on to confirm that Labour will pledge to recognise Palestinian statehood as part of a peace process.

"Palestinian statehood is not a gift to be given, it is a right to be realised and must be realised as part of a process towards a two-state solution and not an outcome of it.

"You can't have meaningful negotiations between two different parties if you don't recognise that one of them exists."

Conservative grandee David Davis says Conservative morals are "fine" following the prime minister's "mistake" leaving D-Day commemorations early.

"This is a mistake and he has apologised properly and that's the end of it," the former Brexit secretary tells the Politics Hub.

Host Ali Fortescue reads messages from backbench Conservative MPs to Sir David, including one calling the behaviour "just wrong" and another saying the PM is "surrounded by idiots".

Sir David responds: "I think everybody would have preferred that he stayed but the simple truth is I'm not picking up the strength of feeling you're talking about.

"I'm picking up people being sad about it... but remember the prime minister went to all of the British events first."

Asked if he thinks the reaction is overblown, Mr Davis says: "Don't put words in my mouth."

Fortescue then reads a quote from a 98-year-old D-Day veteran, which says: "Sunak let the country down today."

"Do you agree with that?"

Mr Davis says: "No I don't. I can understand people being raw and sore... but I'm afraid it was an error that he shouldn't have made and that's that. But he apologised very, very quickly."

Nigel Farage is asked about comments in 2014, which were reported at the time to suggest he had admiration for Vladimir Putin.

"No I didn't," Mr Farage says.

"You said he was an operator, as you put it," Politics Hub host Ali Fortescue puts it to the Reform leader.

"Well that's not admiration, is it? So let's get this right.

"I said he was an unpleasant human being. I wouldn't want to spend time with him. But he was a very clever political operator. So let's get the context right, shall we."

In an Interview for GQ magazine in 2014, Mr Farage was reportedly asked which world leader he most admired.

"As an operator, but not as a human being, I would say Putin," the Telegraph reported him as saying.

"The way he played the whole Syria thing. Brilliant. Not that I approve of him politically. How many journalists in jail now?"

Politics Hub host Ali Fortescue reminds Nigel Farage of comments he made on Sky News earlier in the campaign, when he claimed a "growing number" of young Muslims in the UK "do not subscribe to British values" and "loathe much of what we stand for".

Mr Farage is asked if he would like to pay tribute to the one million Muslims who served in the British Army during the Second World War.

He responds by saying 40% of the UK's contribution to both world wars came from the Commonwealth.

"The problem that I'm talking about is a separate problem of 18 to 24-year-old young Muslims who were born in this country, who increasingly are being radicalised," Mr Farage claims.

Fortescue points out these types of comments are used by racists to fuel their arguments.

"I'm not interested in those people and thank goodness in this country they are a tiny minority fringe," responds Mr Farage.

"All I'm doing is stating an obvious truth that makes people in Britain feel very, very uncomfortable.

"Why, and I don't know the answer, why are young British-born Muslims being attracted to jihad and radicalism?"

This feels like a day that we might well look back on as a defining moment in the election campaign.

And a photo that I suspect will come to haunt the prime minister.

David Cameron in a line up of world leaders remembering the fallen, while Rishi Sunak sat down for an election interview.

Campaigns can unravel because of a series of unfortunate events.

An opponent can carefully unpick policy flaws.

Or sometimes an unforced error can come to define an election. A lapse of judgement.

The prime minister has apologised for leaving D-Day early.

But you've got to ask the question: how did the people around Rishi Sunak miss this?

Today, one of his own advisers, Ian Acheson, has quit the Conservative Party - he said  it had been outsourced to a "bunch of mendacious, incompetent and disreputable clowns".

The prime minister himself says his diary was drawn up well in advance.

Unlike gaffs of elections past, this one was planned.

  1. Book Cheap Coach Tickets Online

In the United Kingdom, travelling by coach is the cheapest mode of transport. Competition between bus providers, such as National Express, megabus and FlixBus, has driven ticket prices down. By contrast, rail prices are constantly on the rise. Coach travel is also more reliable as trains in the UK are commonly subject to multiple strikes each year.
