In small towns shops like this they need some good press to bring more people in. Unfortunately, our experience will not add to that. We were in twice last weekend. The 1st time in we spent 50 bucks, the second time we spent nothing. There were some other things we were interested in purchasing but the only employee in the store was completely disinterested in our inquiries. She seemed to not care if we bought anything and appeared annoyed that she had to deal with us actually buying something. A $50 purchase could have actually been many times more than that had there been some interest from the seemingly annoyed worker.

Photo of Brandon E.

The stuff inside isn't bad. They have your typical "Pinterest Style" decor with some vintage pieces mingled in here and there. The thing that would make me not want to buy anything from this shop, honestly is the coldness if its employees. When I first walked in, there was a sign on a small table that asked you to please sanitize your hands. Perfectly understandable because of Covid. However, one of the employees, an older woman, stared me down as well the people I was with without so much as a "hello" or "good morning" she then huffed past us once we all used it like we were a bother we were even there. The second employee behind the counter was just as cold. While looking at the items on the counter she was standing behind, I attempted to make eye contact and muttered a hello. In response....I got nothing. I'm sorry. But if you want the support of people to help your business, you need to learn to at least be polite. I don't expect a full conversation, but a simple acknowledgement that I want to support your business would be a kind gesture. There are plenty of other cute stores in Davis. I would look towards those.

Hi there finally seeing customers have started a yelp page for us. It is very unfortunate to see you posting this negative review to welcome us to the Yelp community . We’ve had a tremendous time maintaining employees and currently I’m running the store without staff. I do apologize for Customer Service lacking but certainly try my best to help out every customer coming through my doors. It is a tremendous effort to keep this place open especially during Covid, if you have any suggestions on how future yelpers Could help out or business please let me know.

Based on how I look, they decided to stare and then proceed to follow me around the store because they thought I was going to steal something. Just looking for incense, lol. Not a very welcoming place especially if you don't meet their standards on appearance. Still, tried to be kind and interact with the staff at check-out, but was met with a cold shoulder.

Love this unique store in the heart of Davis. Great place for souvenirs or rare finds. The best part is it was below our air bnb, so perfect location for us during our stay in Davis. Highly recommend the store and the air bnb above it. The owner is just the sweetest, too.

The Wandering Caravan Makes its Way to Davis

David Grimes

By Heather Clower The Parsons Advocate

A new boutique has taken up residency in Davis near the Post Office in front of Louie’s Bargain Warehouse. The Wandering Caravan, owned and operated by Jessica Luscombe, offers new and gently used vintage clothing, home décor, and one of a kind artisans. “It’s good to be versatile,” Luscombe said.

“It’s been a lifelong dream to have my own boutique,” she said. Luscombe comes from a family of artists as she herself is a professional photographer, graduate of the International Center of Photography. Most recently, she has worked in the vocational rental business in Ocean City and Deep Creek Lake, Md. She moved to Davis in January, where her Mother has been coming to visit for a long time. She commented how progressive Davis has become and seems to be expanding, making it an ideal location for a unique boutique such as The Wandering Caravan. “I’ve had a very, very positive reception,” Luscombe said as a new business owner. “I don’t want to cater to just tourists,” she admitted, stating she is always open to suggestions of items to carry. “We’re getting new items all the time,” she said.

The Wandering Caravan receives items from sources all over the country from Luscombe’s friend and family connections. Items are coming in from Oregon, Pennsylvania, New York City, and Arizona to name a few. As you enter the boutique via the storefront, you will quickly notice the wide variety of items she has on hand. Clothing, decorations, woven rugs, jewelry, art, and repurposed old furniture are all on display. “We are really into sustainability,” she said as she described the rehabilitated furniture.

Her boutique can be found on Instagram at the wandering_caravan and can be found on FaceBook as well. A website is in the works and can be found at www.thewanderingcaravan.com. Currently, the boutique’s business hours are Wednesday and Thursday from noon until 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. These hours are in trial and may be subject to change. The Wandering Caravan accepts all major credit cards and cash as forms of payment.

Blackwater Falls

Davis, West Virginia

We arrived in the small quaint town of Davis , West Virginia, home to Blackwater Falls , around 6 pm on Friday, March 25th. Our first stop was to get a fantastic burrito at Hellbender burritos . We had been here a few times before, so we knew it was delicious and wouldn’t disappoint. You definitely have to try one when you are in town. They are currently open Friday-Sunday for take-out only due to covid. It is a welcoming vibe when you go in to place your order. They have a section where you can sit and wait or stand by the fire until they call your name.

Hellbenders Burritos

Hellbender and Stumptown ales

Our teen ordered a second burrito (yes she loves Hellbender’s that much) while my hubby and I checked out, Stumptown Ales . He had had a growler filled when I was ordering our first round of burritos, but we wanted to check out the inside vibe of the brewery and have a seat at the bar. It was warm and welcoming with a fire and lights strung around the fireplace mantle. The bar itself was wooden with soft lights above it adding to the soothing atmosphere.

Stumptown Ales, Davis, WV

We sampled the Holy Citra and were instantly impressed. We ordered a 14-ounce cold one and kicked back to enjoy the ambience.

Holy Citra IPA beer

Cabin check-in

We then went to, Blackwater Falls lodge , to check in to our classic cabin. The front desk was efficient and had a packet of instructions and activities available during our stay. The packet also included our keys to the cabin and WiFi information. The cabin was cute and comfortable. The lodge provided a bundle of firewood for each night, which we welcomed since the weather was cold and windy. After settling into the cabin and unpacking some of our belongings my hubby got the fire going. We cracked open our growler and enjoyed beers around the fireplace.

Blackwater Falls

Saturday morning we got up and headed to Milo’s cafe, where we had coffee and breakfast sandwiches. We each did the bacon, egg and cheese but chose different breads. The sandwiches were very yummy but the coffee was mediocre. Once we were properly fueled up, we went to the Blackwater Falls overlook . It had snowed overnight (5″) and the fresh snow surrounding the falls looked breathtaking.

Snowy path, Blackwater Fallls

We took photos at each lookout point and then headed to see the falls at a closer view. We took more pictures and videos. Including plenty of selfies! The falls were really roaring and looked absolutely spectacular!

Exploring nature in Davis

After driving around and exploring,

Large rock, Davis,WV

we headed back to town for a sandwich and some hot soup at, Big Belly deli. My husband liked the soup (broccoli cheddar) and thought the sandwich (The Dead Parrot) was underwhelming. I liked the sandwich better than the soup so I guess we have different tastes. Our daughter ordered a pepperoni roll and said that the accompanying sauce for dipping was cold. Overall, a very subpar lunch spot. You can skip this place!

Shopping local

After lunch we hit some shops. We stopped at Wild Ginger and Spice and bought candles, a fancy bound journal and some lip balm. It is an upbeat hippie store with plenty to see. We thought one incense in particular stood out!

Incense sticks

At The Wandering Caravan , we bought a cement lotus head for our meadow and some artsy graphic socks. It is a very nicely remodeled shop with a lot of gift ideas. The last time we were in Davis this place didn’t look like there was a shop in it for 50 years.

Artsy Graphic Socks

Next up, was Wach’s Gallery and Garden . Elena and I bought some dangle earrings, and I found some beer mugs (our cabin only had plastic cups or ceramic coffee mugs and we wanted to have that perfect pour). The owners were very talkative, informative and super friendly. Be sure to check out all of the small, unique businesses when you are in town, and you will be glad that you shopped local!

We then drove around and checked out a mountain top overlook and built a small snowman with the perfect snowman building type snow. You know the kind I am talking about. The snowman was small, but it made for a great family memory.

Mountain top overlook

After a full day of fun and exploration we went back to the cabin to get showers for our night out.

We decided to go into Thomas to the Riverfront Wood-fired Pizza . My hubby and I ordered a margarita pizza (almost as good as we had in Ercolano, Italy ) and our daughter ordered a pepperoni pizza. Ordering is done when you walk in and they give you a buzzer to let you know when the pizza is ready for pick-up. We loved the pizza, but were hoping for more of a wait staff style restaurant where things weren’t so rushed. You definitely have to try the pizza though! So yummy! We love trying new pizza spots like we did when we went to New York City . Where is your favorite pizza from?

Riverfront pizza Thomas, WV

We dropped our teen off at the cabin and ended our Saturday night at, Stumptown ales brewery , for another tasty beverage. Not wanting to miss out on future drinks from a fabulous brewery, we left with 4, 4-pack cans of beer and a growler to take back to Pittsburgh with us.

Stumptown Ales beer cans

It was a super cold and blustery night so they were closing early, but they are normally open until 10 p.m. on Saturdays. It is definitely a great selection of West Virginia craft beer in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Be sure to check this place out. It is top notch!

Thomas WV on way home

Sunday morning after check-out we went to Thomas for coffee and breakfast. We went to, Tip Top coffee shop, where my hubby had a cortado (the best he’s ever had, and we were in Italy ) and I had a cappuccino that was an 8/10. They offered pastries and bagels but no breakfast foods. We walked in the snowy and windy conditions to a sit-down breakfast place called, Farm up table . My hubby had delicious sour cream pancakes with real maple syrup, and I had a scrumptious bacon egg and cheese sandwich on an English muffin. Our daughter had 2 eggs over easy with bacon, hash browns and toast. (She was hungry!) Everything was really good, and we would definitely recommend checking them out if you are in the area.

Breakfast Farm up table

Sadly, we had to head back home but we had time for one last stop. And since our main objective of the entire trip was to eat burritos from Hellbender’s , we ordered burritos for our road trip back home! They definitely hit the spot!

Hellbenders burritos road trip

Final Thoughts

We had a really good time in Davis and Thomas and would definitely recommend checking it out if you are going to be in West Virginia. Blackwater Falls is spectacular and worth exploring too. We love travelling to see waterfalls like we did in Jamaica and Deep Creek, Maryland . How about you?

Let us know in the comments if you’ve ever been to Davis or Thomas and what you would recommend seeing or doing.

"Always have something to look forward to," is my mantra. I like knowing that another trip is on the horizon. I created this blog to incorporate my love of creative writing, photography and travel all rolled into one. Exploring new places and seeing different parts of the world is exciting and energizing to me. I don't want to do the same things and see the same places because life is too short to stay in the same spot. I hope you enjoy seeing the places that I've traveled to with my family and I hope this blog inspires you to discover new places and opens your mind to traveling more.

West Virginia Day Trip: Smoke Hole Caverns & Blackwater Falls

Share the love!

wandering caravan davis wv

If you are visiting West Virginia and are looking for something unique yet touristy to do, look no further than this blog post. When you combine the rare and unconventional beauty of Smoke Hole Caverns with the traditional mountain town experience of Blackwater Falls, you have yourself the perfect West Virginia day trip .

If you are outdoorsy, West Virginia is the place for you. I am not outdoorsy, but I am born & raised here, and therefore have become grandfathered in to knowing how to show you around. I have vivid childhood memories of going to both Smoke Hole Caverns and Blackwater Falls. When someone tells me they want a mountain town experience , this is always one of the trips I recommend.

Bonus : Because it doesn’t take long to see Blackwater Falls, this post also contains some other things to do in Tucker County! There are more waterfalls , great places to eat , and even a brewery !

Driving To Smoke Hole Caverns/Blackwater Falls

  • Note: This part of the blog post will be written assuming you are located in or near Morgantown, WV. Depending on where you live in WV, this might not be a day trip for you (more like a weekend trip). But if you live near Morgantown or anywhere on the left side of the Eastern Panhandle, you could definitely do this trip in a day!
  • Pro Tip: When doing this trip, I would recommend seeing Smoke Hole Caverns first, then driving up to Tucker County to see Blackwater Falls after.

The drive from Morgantown to Smoke Hole Caverns and then to Davis/Thomas is both a blessing and a curse. It will take you roughly 2 hours & 15 minutes from Morgantown to get to Smoke Hole , another ~50 minutes to get to Davis/Thomas , and then roughly 1 hour & 30 minutes to get back to Morgantown . That is the curse. The blessing is getting to drive through a lot of the “country roads” West Virginia is known for and take in all its naturalistic splendor!

Smoke Hole Caverns – Cabins, WV

Smoke Hole Caverns got its name from Native American settlers who used the caverns to smoke wild game. The smoke would billow up into the sky and it became such a common sight that people started referring to the area as “smoke hole.”

Entrance to Smoke Hole Caverns in West Virginia

Smoke Hole Caverns are undoubtedly one of the most unique looking caverns you will ever experience in your lifetime. The mineral water flowing through the crevices create stalactites and stalagmites: cone-shaped rock formations that can grow so big they become “wavy” and weigh up to 2 tons.

Inside Smoke Hole Caverns in West Virginia

The tour starts out looking like a typical cave, but once you get so far in, you will see the ceiling and sides of the ground floor covered with stalactites and stalagmites!

Things to Know About Touring Smoke Hole Caverns

  • You do NOT need to buy tickets in advance! Tickets are purchased inside the resort gift shop when you arrive, and you will be booked on the next tour.
  • Tours run every hour and last roughly 45 minutes
  • The caverns are cold and damp inside – bring a jacket!
  • You will have to climb up and down some narrow steps that can be slick with water from the inside of the caverns. Wear tennis shoes and take your time walking through.

Once you purchase your tickets from the gift shop, you can browse through the store until your tour is called. The gift shop is really cute and has a lot of WV souvenirs. They also carry men’s and women’s clothes, shoes, jewelry, candles, and other decorative items.

Smoke Hole Resort

I did not do this (and neither would you if you are doing Smoke Hole as a day trip), but it is worth mentioning that you are able to stay the night at Smoke Hole Resort and explore more of this part of West Virginia! They offer log cabins, cottages, log motels, and RV camping. For things to do, Seneca Rocks and Dolly Sods are nearby tourist areas which are popular for hiking and scenic views.

Blackwater Falls | Exploring Davis, WV

Blackwater Falls State Park is located in Tucker County, WV in the town of Davis. There is another town right next to Davis that is very similar, called Thomas.

Davis, WV and Thomas, WV are what you think of when you hear the words “mountain town.” They are perfectly quaint, rural, and give you a sense of peace and serenity when you visit. Because they are side-by-side and have the same free-spirit vibe, I have heard a lot of people refer to the area as “Davis/Thomas.”

Blackwater Falls

Blackwater Falls State Park is a major WV tourist attraction and draws people in from everywhere. There’s something so peaceful about hiking down the short trail and looking at the falls from one of 2 overlooks.

Blackwater Falls is easy to find/easy to get to. Once you get into Davis, there will be a sign on the right side of the road that says “Blackwater Falls State Park.” Turn down Blackwater Falls Road, and the parking lot is about 1.5 miles down the road at the Trading Post .

Blackwater Falls in Davis, WV

Hiking Blackwater Falls

Once you arrive at Blackwater Falls State Park, the path to get down to see the falls is pretty short. I actually debated on whether or not I wanted to refer to this as a “hike” because much of the trail is man-made steps as opposed to what one traditionally thinks of in terms of hiking trails.

The hardest part about this trail is coming back up the steps when you’re finished. Going down is pretty fun!

Once you get to the bottom, there are 2 main overlooks where you can see the falls. One is smaller and higher up. The other is further down and allows you to get a closer view.

Elakala Falls

Blackwater Falls isn’t the only waterfall you can explore in Davis/Thomas! Elakala Falls is another waterfall near Blackwater Lodge that is on a hiking trail. This is a great option for those that are looking for a more traditional hiking experience.

  • It is important to clarify here that parking for Elakala Falls is different than parking for Blackwater Falls. For Blackwater Falls, you drive to Blackwater Falls State Park, and for Elakala Falls, you drive to Blackwater Lodge.

Once you start hiking Elakala Trail, you reach the falls pretty early on. It is important to note that this hike takes you overtop of the falls, rather than to a viewpoint where you can look out and see the falls the way that Blackwater Falls does. IMO, this is the only downside of this hike. There is nowhere to get a really great, unobstructed view of the falls.

Elakala Falls in Davis, WV

Nevertheless, the entire hike is beautiful, peaceful and relatively easy to do! It is 0.6 miles out and back and took us roughly 20-30 minutes. The trail is also marked by red squares that are nailed into the trees (pictured below), so it’s easy to stay on the path.

Pro Tip: There are a ton of hikes to do around Davis/Thomas! Check out this website for some of the most popular hikes to do in Tucker County!

Shopping and Dining in Davis, WV

On the main drag of Route 32 sits an adorable downtown area with boutique shops, restaurants, a brewery, and more. In terms of shops, there is an art gallery, spice shop, outdoor clothing and equipment, and my favorite, The Wandering Caravan.

  • Hellbender’s Burritos

Stumptown Ales Brewery

Did you know we love our craft beer here in West Virginia? That was a rhetorical question.

Stumptown Ales is located towards the end of the strip of shops and restaurants on Route 32. They brew all of their beer, with their focus being hoppy IPAs . Of note, I am a wheat beer girl, and can vouch that their wheat beer is amazing. They also make a stout called Porter? I Barely Know Her! – that is a fan favorite amongst many. I tried it when I was there, and it didn’t feel “heavy” to me the way most porters do!

Stumptown Ales in Davis, WV

If you need further convincing to try Stumptown Ales, I’ll say this: My friend and I walked in right at 5pm when they opened their doors. By 5:02, the entire taproom was full of people. That many locals can’t be wrong!

Exploring Thomas, WV

Although most of the attractions in this area are in Davis, I couldn’t end this post without highlighting Thomas, WV too. The “sister-town” to Davis, Thomas has equally cute shops and restaurants that I wanted to point out.

Similar to the downtown Rt. 32 area in Davis, Thomas has a (smaller) downtown strip of vintage/antique shops, art galleries, and restaurants. I didn’t write down the name of any of the shops, but they are all along the same strip and easy to find.

Restaurants on the strip and worth checking out include:

  • TipTop Coffee – best for breakfast; at present time, they do not have a lunch menu
  • Picnic Taco – their bowls are amazing
  • The Purple Fiddle – a well-known hipster bar with live music
  • Farm Up Table – serves breakfast/lunch/dinner; closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays
