BOOK REVIEW: ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation Cats’ Combines Two Of Our Favorite Things

star trek tng cats

| March 26, 2018 | By: Kayla Iacovino 7 comments so far

After the success of the first book , Star Trek Cats , we couldn’t wait to get our paws on the sequel. Like its predecessor, Star Trek: The Next Generation Cats is a thoroughly enjoyable picture book full of, you guessed it, Star Trek and cats.

The book is organized much like the first, TOS-themed edition. A two-page spread in the front shows off all of our favorite Enterprise D characters in the form of their feline counterparts. Author and artist Jenny Parks once again nails it with her pairings of cat breed and coloring (and goofy expressions) with the personalities of the bridge crew. Although, I must admit that Picard as a hairless cat makes me slightly uneasy.

Cats on the bridge!

And what would a book about our favorite Star Trek TNG characters be without some of our favorite scenes? Parks hit most of TNG’s fan favorites, including scenes from “Darmok”, “Cause and Effect”, “Relics”, “Rascals”, “Encounter at Farpoint”, “The Game”, and “All Good Things…”. Some of our favorite guest stars make an appearance, too, including Commander Sela and Sarek.

Much like the Tamarians, cats also speak in unintelligible riddles.

Star Trek TNG Cats retails for $14.95, but is on sale at Amazon for $10.50. And, it is well worth the purchase price. Get it for that special cat-loving Trekkie in your life!

Inquiry: Does Data the Cat have a pet android?

Good question :)

Couldn’t hold myself recognising Wesley in the bridge picture. Bald Picard and grumpy Worf are special, too :D

I Love Star Trek and my boyfriend loves cats so he gave me the first one in this which I think seem like it will be a series =p

WTF did I just see ??? Seriously, who makes this shit and think people will like it, other than creepy people who humanize their pets? ;-)

Star Trek: TNG Cats is available for preorder now at Amazon.

Another new  Trek book was just announced today via IGN , as author  David A. Goodman continues his series of in-universe character studies with  The Autobiography of Mr. Spock .

This is the third entry in Goodman’s autobiography releases, following 2015’s  Autobiography of James T. Kirk and 2017’s  Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard .

Here’s the full story breakdown from today’s announcement:

The Autobiography of Mr. Spock tells the story of one of Starfleet’s finest officers, and one of the Federation’s most celebrated citizens. Half human and half Vulcan, the book, written in Spock’s own words, follows his difficult childhood on the planet Vulcan; his enrollment at Starfleet Academy; his adventures with Captain Kirk and the crew of the Starship Enterprise; his diplomatic triumphs with the Klingons and Romulans; and his death and amazing resurrection on the Genesis Planet. We meet the friends he’s made, the women he’s loved, and experience the triumphs and tragedies of a life and career that spanned a century. His struggle to find his place in the universe is one we can all relate to.

While it’s not yet available for preorder, the book is due out from Titan Books on October 16 and will include an “eight-page, full color-plate section” with imagery similar to the previous volumes.

We’ll share preorder links when available!

Ode to Spot

Happy National Pet Day!

Close-up of Spot cradled in Data's arms as seen in 'In Theory'

StarTrek.com

In honor of National Pet Day , we present to you Data's poem to his feline friend, Spot, as first originally performed in "Schisms" ( Star Trek: The Next Generation ).

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Schisms

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;Your visual, olfactory, and auditory sensesContribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,A singular development of cat communicationsThat obviates your basic hedonistic predilectionFor a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

Data pets Spot while sitting at his desk in his quarters as seen in 'Data's Day'

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents; You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance. And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you displayConnote a fairly well-developed cognitive array. And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

What Only True Star Trek Fans Noticed About Data's Cat

Brent Spiner as Commander Data

Data is one of the most beloved characters within the "Star Trek" universe. Per Nerdist , Data first appeared on the pilot episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation"  in 1987 as the only known sentient android in history. Throughout the series and its movie offshoots, Data learning and encountering a full range of human experiences and emotions was an ongoing highlight for "Star Trek" fans. Data even became a pet owner, obtaining a cat named Spot. Spot's first appearance came during the fourth season of TNG on the episode "Data's Day," which first aired on January 7, 1991, as reported by  Ex Astris Scientia . Spot was referred to as "he" and was portrayed as a long-haired Somali cat. This version of Spot appeared once more, in the episode titled "In Theory," before disappearing from the show for a time.

During the sixth season of TNG, Spot reappeared on the episode "A Fistful of Datas" and became a series regular. However, sharp-eyed fans (or those with a particularly good memory) noticed something about Data's cat: it was a different Spot. Not only was Spot eventually referred to as "she," the cat was now an American shorthair with a brighter coat, new pattern, and of course shorter hair.

So why the new Spot? According to Issue 105 of the magazine Star Trek: Communicator, published in February of 1991 and quoted by Memory Alpha , not only did the first cat who portrayed Spot die between the fourth and sixth season, but producer Jeri Taylor decided Spot should give birth.

The portrayal of Spot was a multi-cat production

Per the 1991 article in Star Trek: Communicator, quoted by Memory Alpha , the new Spot was first portrayed by two cats, twin tabbies Monster and Brandy, followed by cats named Bud, Tyler, Spencer, and Zoe. The episode on which Spot gave birth, "Genesis," also featured her temporarily turning into an iguana, at which point she was played by an actual iguana named Willie. This episode also featured Spot as a hero who indirectly saves the crew of the Enterprise. The entire crew is infected by a synthetic T-cell that causes de-evolution; hence Spot's transformation to a lizard. It's only when Spot's kittens are born unaffected that Data and Captain Picard , who return from an away mission, realize that Spot's placenta protected them, giving them the idea to create an antidote using amniotic fluid from Nurse Ogawa, who was also pregnant.

While the character of Data loved Spot, famously composing an ode to his pet and even crying tears of joy thanks to a newly-implanted emotion chip when he learns Spot survived the destruction of the Enterprise in the movie "Star Trek: Generations," actor Brent Spiner was seemingly not as much of a fan. During a question and answer session (available in part on YouTube ), Spiner joked that the cats who played Spot "were three of the worst actors I ever worked with" and "would not do anything you asked them to. I hated working with them, I'll be honest."

Our 7 Favorite Cats From “Star Trek” & Beyond

Last Updated on May 27, 2024 by Catster Editorial Team

There have been more than 900 episodes of the 12 different iterations of Star Trek, including the animated series. There have also been 13 movies, over 800 books, and a novelization of the series. It has been one of the most popular franchises on small and big screens since it first aired in 1966.

Whether you’re a Trekkie or an ailurophile, enjoy this list of 7 cats that have featured and been named in various on-screen Star Trek iterations.

  • The 7 Cats From Star Trek

Spot is probably the most famous of the Star Trek cats. He was once Lieutenant Commander Data’s pet and Data even wrote a sonnet dedicated to him called “Ode to Spot”. The cat earned the respect of Commander Worf, and when Data passed in 2379, Worf became Spot’s new owner.

Spot was played by a total of six different cats, of both genders, but was meant to be a female cat in the show.

More recently, Grudge has become the poster cat of Star Trek, featuring in Star Trek Discovery as Booker’s companion. The cat is played by two Maine Coon brothers, Leeu and Durban, but the character of the cat is actually based on writer Jenny Lumet’s grandmother’s Pekingese dog, Nelly.

Grudge now has his own X/Twitter account and, in 2022, the Book of Grudge was published.

Cat owners in Star Trek tended to name their cats after prominent people. Neelix, Reginald Barclay’s pet cat in Voyager, was named after Neelix, a Talaxian crewmember of the USS Voyager. Barclay obtained Neelix sometime after he transferred from the USS Enterprise-E to the Pathfinder Project on Earth.

Neelix was a Persian cat, and often slept on Barclay’s stomach.

Sylvia was actually an ornithoid who could shapeshift at will, and could telepathically examine the minds of individuals near her, but one of the forms she took was that of a black cat. Sylvia took crewmembers of the USS Enterprise hostage in a bid to research and learn more about humans before discovering she enjoyed torturing and manipulating them.

Isis was another shapeshifter who liked to take the form of a black cat . Isis was a companion to Supervisor Gary Seven and had some kind of telepathic link to her companion. Though she was Seven’s pet cat, she was more than just this and communicated with him telepathically, plus understood his spoken words. Human Isis and the feline form of Isis both wore the same collar.

Isis was also involved in the 1968 sabotage and detonation of a nuclear missile in the atmosphere 104 miles above the surface of central Eurasia.

Chester originally belonged to Liam Bilby and lived on Farius Prime with his owner. Chester had a favorite chair and didn’t like it when someone else sat in it! But, when Bilby died, Chester passed to Senior Chief Petty Officer Miles O’Brien, who had entered Bilby’s home under the guise of Connelly.

O’Brien brought Chester to Deep Space 9 and the cat seemed to like him right away, leaping onto O’Brien’s lap.

  • 7. The Caitians

The Star Trek universe features many races that don’t get too much screen time, but occasionally pop up. The Caitians are a feline humanoid race that displayed a lot of feline characteristics, and are a spacefaring species and long-standing members of the United Federation of Planets.

They featured more prominently in the animated TV series, and the Caitians are a playable race in Star Trek Online, the MMORPG (multiplayer online role-playing game).

divider 3 paws

Cats have long been domesticated by humans , and it stands to reason they would feature in Star Trek. In the Star Trek Universe, they are treated as human pets and they feature quite regularly, although they only rarely appear in the movies and TV series. The Caitians did feature in the animated series and, more recently, take more of a starring role in the massive multiplayer game Star Trek Online.

Grudge’s role in Discovery has also put the cats of Star Trek on the map.

The Star Trek Next Generation Character That Was Originally Drastically Different

Early plans for Star Trek: The Next Generation had very different conceptions of the main cast, including a security chief inspired by a space marine from Aliens.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Cast

Yaphet Kotto as Jean-Luc Picard? Wesley Snipes as Geordi? Jenny Agutter as Dr. Crusher?

Gene Roddenberry considered all of these actors for Star Trek: The Next Generation before casting Patrick Stewart , LeVar Burton, and Gates McFadden. However, the most surprising alternate idea for a TNG character involved Tasha Yar, the ill-fated security chief aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise .

The Tale of Macha Hernandez

The TNG series bible, released before the show premiered as a guide for writers and actors, describes Yar in terms similar, if not completely one-to-one, with the character we know from the series. “Born at a ‘failed’ Earth colony of renegades and other violent undesirables, she escaped to Earth in her teens and discovered Starfleet, which she still ‘worships’ today as the complete opposite of all the ugliness she once knew,” the description explains.

Portrayed by Denise Crosby, Tasha Yar did show great loyalty to Picard and the Enterprise , even if that loyalty fell short of “worship.” And though we knew she had a terrible childhood, the full details wouldn’t be known until the season four episode “Legacy.”

Ad – content continues below

But the very first description written for Yar in preparation for auditions was very different. So different, in fact, that she wasn’t even called Tasha Yar.

“LT. Macha Hernandez – 26 year old woman of unspecified Latin descent who serves as the starship’s security chief,” read the first casting call for TNG . “She is described as having a new quality of conditioned-body-beauty, a fire in her eyes and muscularly well developed and very female body, but keeping in mind that much of her strength comes from attitude. Macha has an almost obsessive devotion to protecting the ship and its crew and treats Capt. Picard and Number One as if they were saints.”

If a space-fairing Latina warrior with muscles and an attitude sounds familiar, it should.

Macha Hernandez’s description also matches Vasquez, the standout space marine from Aliens . Portrayed by Jenette Goldstein, who also appeared in director James Cameron ‘s Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Titanic , Vasquez was the standout in a space marine corps filled with colorful characters. While the other marines struggled to shake off their cryosleep (save for Al Matthews’ Sgt. Apone, of course), Vasquez starts doing pull ups and fending off dumb jokes from Hudson ( Bill Paxton ).

Every single line that Vasquez delivers is an all-timer. When the xenomorphs descend upon the marines and overwhelm them, Vasquez shouts “Let’s rock!” and starts blowing them away. She’s got a fantastic final line, telling Gorman (William Hope) just before they both die in an explosion, “You always were an asshole.”

Unsurprisingly, the first actor the producers considered for the role of Macha was Goldstein, but how the heck would a character like that fit on the deck of the Enterprise ? Especially while Roddenberry was in charge? After all, the man was famous for restricting conflict among the crew, which accounts for many of the bumps in TNG ‘s infamously uneven first season. It’s hard to see how even a TV-softened version of Vasquez could work on TNG .

Part of the answer is in the casting announcement. Macha is loyal to the Federation and Picard. So while there would surely be moments in which Macha would have leaned toward violence, a word from Picard would have made her stand down, as often happened with Worf.

Beside Goldstein, another early frontrunner to play the character that would become Tasha Yar was Marina Sirtis. No, the English daughter of Greek parents isn’t at all Latina. But for television producers of the 1980s, brown hair was enough to signify “unspecified Latin descent.” And Goldstein isn’t actually Latina either despite playing a Latina woman in Aliens .

Interestingly, the original description for Deanna Troi said the character was a “cool, Icelandic blonde, almost Spock-like,” according to Crosby . “Marina [Sirtis] was reading for Tasha. Somewhere, about the second or third audition, Gene Roddenberry had this idea: Let’s just switch them and see what happens.”

From Macha to Tasha

When Denise Crosby became the frontrunner for the Security Officer, not even the most incurious casting director could see her as someone named Macha Hernandez. Instead, the show rewrote the character as the Ukrainian-descended Tasha Yar. With the Hernandez connection severed, most callbacks to Vasquez disappeared as well. Yar became a tough character who was told to stop fighting much more than she actually fought, unfortunately turning her into a bit of a boring presence on the Enterprise deck. Yar died an ignoble death in the 23rd episode of season 1, “Skin of Evil,” but it’s hard to begrudge all involved for abandoning the character.

Of course, Crosby did get to return in various forms throughout the show’s run, getting a proper send off for Yar in the wonderful “Yesterday’s Enterprise” and then getting to play the fun villain Sela. And Goldstein eventually found her way to Starfleet too, as a science officer aboard the Enterprise -B in Star Trek Generations and voicing the Enterprise computer on Short Treks .

Even better, the other attempt to pull from Aliens was much more successful. Roddenberry and the other TNG creators loved Lance Henriksen’s gentle but still uncanny take on an android as Bishop. They looked to that quality for Data, which they first found in actor Mark Lindsay Chapman before going with Brent Spiner . Spiner proved to be the ideal choice, not just because he brought Bishop’s disquieting kindness to Data, but also because he could expand on the character to make him unique and not just knock-off.

With time and the right casting, would Macha Hernandez have also become a distinct and beloved character? Maybe under Yaphet Kotto’s Picard and alongside Wesley Snipes’ LaForge.

Unplanned Reshoots And A Haircut Had Star Trek: TNG Producers Scrambling

Star Trek: The Next Generation Q Who

In the second season of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Trekkies were introduced to a memorable minor character named Ensign Sonya Gomez, played by actress Lycia Naff. Ensign Gomez first appeared in "Q Who" (May 8, 1989), the first episode to feature the Borg. She conversed briefly with Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) about how excited she was to be serving on the U.S.S. Enterprise-D before accidentally spilling her drink on Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart). Ensign Gomez appeared again in the following episode, "Samaritan Snare" (May 15, 1989), the episode to first feature the Pakled. In a fun development, Lycia Naff would return to play Gomez in an episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" called "First First Contact" (October 14, 2021) wherein she had risen to the rank of captain.

For a hot minute behind the scenes, Ensign Gomez was floated as a potential love interest for Geordi , and Naff was even told about a potential story wherein Geordi would get life-threatening eye surgery merely to see Gomez without his visor. The romance plot was dropped, however, when Gomez was written to be more comedic, and Naff was asked to play her few scenes for laughs. The producers felt that a "funny" character wouldn't make a good love interest, and Gomez was relegated to only two episodes.

In a 2018 interview with StarTrek.com , Naff also revealed a minor crisis involving her hair. It seems she was dismissed from the set on her last day of shooting, told she wouldn't be needed. Naff, relieved, got a haircut and started looking for new gigs. She shouldn't have done that.

Ensign Gomez hair

When the idea of Ensign Gomez's long-term role fell through, Naff was sent home. She was grateful, and had already planned on getting a shorter hairdo when she got the call to do a few reshoots. Naff said:

"After I shot the two episodes and was told that I was NOT coming back next season, I told the producers 'Thank you for the opportunity' and that I was planning to cut my hair length by a few inches, which I did. Little did I know that a few weeks later, the producers wanted me back for a re-shoot of the hallway scene. At that point, they saw my hair didn't match earlier shots and we had to scramble to add extensions to match the previous length."

All credit to Michael Westmore and the rest of the hair-and-makeup team at "Star Trek: The Next Generation," because one cannot see the difference between the original takes and the reshoots; Naff's hair matches perfectly.

Know that Naff didn't cut her hair out of spite, adding that if she "was told to not cut my hair, I never would have, but I'd been completely wrapped from the part with no hope of returning."

It's a pity that Ensign Gomez didn't return, as she was a fun character with a lot of personality. Perhaps the plot with Geordi getting eye surgery wasn't a great idea — Geordi's blindness was hardly ever mentioned, much less used as a plot point — but Geordi and Gomez seemed to have a great rapport and could have very well have developed a romantic relationship. Sadly, it was never to be.

Ode to Spot

  • View history

"Ode to Spot" was an ode composed by Data in 2369 , addressed to his pet cat , Spot . ( TNG : " Schisms ")

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature , An endothermic quadruped , carnivorous by nature; Your visual , olfactory , and auditory senses Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses. I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations , A singular development of cat communications That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection. A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents ; You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance . And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion, It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion . O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array . And though you are not sentient , Spot, and do not comprehend, I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

Later that same year, the content of the poem replaced some files on the USS Enterprise -D 's main computer when Data's personal files were accidentally uploaded to the computer during an experimental interface between it and his neural net . One of the files replaced was the text of the play Something for Breakfast . A progressive memory purge eventually corrected the problem. ( TNG : " A Fistful of Datas ")

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery ends with 1 last spore drive mystery, star trek: discovery’s real ending already happened in 2018.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery's Season 5 & Series Finale - "Life, Itself"

  • Captain Burnham makes a pivotal choice to banish the Progenitors' technology for the greater good of the galaxy.
  • USS Discovery's epic battle against the Breen pays homage to Star Trek: The Next Generation with a saucer separation.
  • The finale hints at a future for Admiral Burnham and the USS Discovery, leaving the door open for potential sequels or movies.

Star Trek: Discovery 's stunning season 5 and series finale concludes the hunt for the greatest treasure in the galaxy, and the extended finale's emotional epilogue finally answers one of Discovery 's biggest questions as it says goodbye to Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew. Written by Kyle Jarrow and Michelle Paradise and directed by Olatunde Osunname, Star Trek: Discovery 's finale, "Life, Itself", sees Captain Burnham make a pivotal choice about the Progenitors' treasure while the USS Discovery defeats the Breen.

Captain Burnham competed with Moll (Eve Harlow) for the Progenitors' technology, but it could only be Michael who could access it as she passed every test that came with the Progenitors scientists' clues . Burnham met one of the Progenitors (Somkele Iyamah-Idhalama) who revealed Michael was to be the new steward of the Progenitors' technology, as Betazoid scientist Dr. Marina Derex was when she found it in the 24th century. Meanwhile, Ambassador Saru (Doug Jones) faced down Breen Primarch Tahal (Patricia Summersett) while Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) led the USS Discovery to keep the Breen dreadnought from reaching the portal to the Progenitors' technology. Here's how Star Trek: Discovery ended and what it all meant.

As Burnham seeks the universe's greatest treasure in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, she'll need help from a host of new and returning characters.

Why Captain Burnham Sends The Progenitors’ Technology Away

Star trek already has "infinite diversity in infinite combinations".

The Progenitor gave Captain Burnham the choice of what to do with the power of creation, and Michael decided that no one culture should control it. Instead, Burnham decided to send the Progenitors' portal into the binary black holes' event horizon to keep it safe and unreachable. Michael's decision was born from the fact that she didn't want the responsibility of being the technology's steward but, more importantly, Burnham realized Star Trek 's galaxy already has "infinite diversity in infinite combinations". Control of the technology, even by the United Federation of Planets, would ultimately lead to abuse, war, and death.

The Progenitor revealed that the technology is older than they were and that their species found it and decided to use it to populate the galaxy with myriad humanoid lifeforms because their species was alone in the universe.

As she exited the Progenitors' dimension, Captain Burnham witnessed four billion years of creation and everything that led to the galaxy's existence. This solidified Michael's choice to banish the power of creation. Tragically for Moll, the Progenitor revealed to Burnham that while the technology could resurrect L'ak (Elias Toufexis) physically, it can't restore his memories or his personality . Burham and Moll returned to the USS Discovery where Moll was taken into custody. Burnham told her crew that she would speak to President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) and Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) about her choice to banish the power of creation, and she felt that they would agree. Ultimately, Burnham was empowered by the Progenitor and made the unilateral decision she felt was right for the galaxy.

Moll too willingly accepted Burnham's explanation that there was no way to resurrect L'ak, but it's possible Moll was fed her own information when she tried and failed to access the Progenitors' technology.

USS Discovery Beat The Breen With A Star Trek: TNG Enterprise Tribute

Discovery did a saucer separation.

As Ambassador Saru and Commander Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) tried to ward Primarch Tahal from entering the battle for the Progenitors' portal, the USS Discovery was still outmatched by the Breen dreadnought. Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) piloted a shuttle to lock onto the portal. They succeeded because Culber was able to access the memories of Trill scientist Jinaal for the right coordinates . Hugh achieving the ineffable though Jinaal paid off his growing spiritual enlightenment throughout Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Meanwhile, Commander Rayner and the USS Discovery defeated the Breen dreadnought with one final, awesome tribute to Star Trek: The Next Generation and the USS Enterprise-D. Rayner ordered a saucer separation and gambled on Discovery's spore drive being able to jump the dreadnought if it was in the middle of both components of Discovery. Saru then led Tahal's ship to the other Breen dreadnought as Rayner's daring plan worked: All of the Breen were instantaneously sent to the Galactic Barrier, a node to the USS Discovery's journey to make First Contact with Species 10-C at the end of S tar Trek: Discovery season 4 .

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's story is a sequel to the Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6 episode, "The Chase".

Doctor Kovich's True Identity Is Daniels From Star Trek: Enterprise

It's been a long road getting from there to here..

Star Trek: Discovery finally revealed the identity of Doctor Kovich (David Cronenberg): the bespectacled Federation official, Kovich, is the older version of Agent Daniels (Matt Winston) from Star Trek: Enterprise ! In the 22nd century, Daniels posed as a member of the NX-01 Enterprise's crew and revealed Star Trek 's Temporal War to Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula). Using the codename "Doctor Kovich", which is itself a Red Directive, Daniels is now protecting the Federation and the timeline post-Temporal Wars.

Star Trek legacy Easter eggs shown in Doctor Kovich's office include Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge's (LeVar Burton) VISOR, Captain Benjamin Sisko's (Avery Brooks) baseball, and a Chateau Picard wine bottle.

Doctor Kovich introduced himself to Captain Burnham as "Agent Daniels, USS Enterprise... and other places" , which is a nod to the 26th century's USS Enterprise-J Daniels served on, but also the NX-01 Enterprise led by Captain Archer. Further, Kovich had plans for Moll, believing the skilled former courier could be "useful" after she serves her Federation prison sentence. There were numerous theories about Doctor Kovich's true identity, including that he could be a Lanthanite or El-Aurian, but Kovich really being Agent Daniels is a stunning revelation that pleasingly ties Star Trek: Discovery back to Star Trek: Enterprise .

How Star Trek: Discovery Ends For USS Discovery’s Crew

Discovery's crew gets one final reunion.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's ending gave certain members of the crew conclusions to their arcs . Dr. Hugh Culber had one of his big questions answered about his growing spiritual enlightenment. Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) saw the growth of Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner's relationship and decided to apply a similar mentorship program to Starfleet Academy. Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) protested Burnham banishing the Progenitors' technology, but resigned himself to his achievements and being proud of what a fine (and wise) Starfleet Officer Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio) has become.

As seen in Star Trek: Discovery' s finale epilogue, the crew of the USS Discovery assembled on the bridge in a powerful and resonant ending reminiscent of Titanic . Not only was the cast of Star Trek: Discovery season 5 all there, but so were Commanders Kayla Detmer (Emily Coutts) and Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo), and Lt. Commander Ronald Bryce (Ronnie Rowe, Jr.), who missed most or all of Star Trek: Discovery season 5. It was a beautiful moment honoring the actors and characters who have spanned Star Trek: Discovery 's five seasons.

Book & Burnham Reunite At Admiral Saru & President T'Rina's Wedding

Discovery's first couple are back on..

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's original ending was the wedding of Saru and President T'Rina (Tara Rosling), which took place "several weeks" after Captain Burnham found the Progenitors' technology. The Kelpien and Vulcan tied the knot, and Admiral Charles Vance revealed that Saru has been promoted to Admiral. Meanwhile, Burnham and Cleveland Booker put their personal turmoil behind them and declared that they love each other. United once more, Book joined Burnham on the USS Discovery's next mission after Doctor Kovich summoned her with her Infinity Room symbol .

Thanks to his heroic efforts in helping locate the Progenitors' technology, Book's Federation sentence has been commuted and he is a free man.

Saru and T'Rina's wedding was attended by the crew of the USS Discovery, who are Saru's family, and many Vulcan and Federation dignitaries. While it wasn't made clear, Star Trek: Discovery 's finale hints that Commander Rayner remained aboard the USS Discovery as First Officer and Lt. Tilly returned to her teaching post at Starfleet Academy. Presumably, the rest of the USS Discovery's crew reported to their starship for their new mission after Saru and T'Rina were wed .

Admiral Saru likely took a new role overseeing Starfleet with Admiral Vance at Federation HQ so he could remain close to his bride, T'Rina.

Star Trek: Discovery Epilogue: Admiral Burnham and Book’s Son Is The New Captain Burnham

Starfleet's burnham legacy continues..

Star Trek: Discovery 's finale epilogue flashes forward roughly 30 years , placing it in the 3220s. Cleveland Booker has been happily married to Admiral Michael Burnham for decades, and they have made their home on Sanctuary Four, where Book and Michael once dropped off Molly the trance worm in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. Book also planted the world root from Kwejian he was given by the Eternal Gallery and Archive in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 on Sanctuary Four, which remade the planet's flora into a new, thriving version of Kwejian, Book's doomed homeworld.

Michael and Book also have an adult son who is the new Captain Burnham. Named for Book's nephew Leto (Luca Doulgeris), who died along with Kwejian at the start of Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Michael and Book's son is the newly promoted Captain Leto Burnham (Sawandi Wilson), who came to Sanctuary Four to escort his mother to Federation HQ and the USS Discovery's final mission. Admiral Burnham had wise words of connection and family for her son, who hopes to find the same relationships with the crew of his unnamed starship as Michael did with the USS Discovery's crew.

Admiral Michael Burnham learned the lesson that the deeper meaning she was searching for was spending the time you have with the people you love.

Star Trek: Discovery’s Epilogue Finally Confirms Short Treks' “Calypso” Is Canon

Discovery answers its biggest short trek mystery.

Star Trek: Discovery' s finale epilogue ends with one last incredible surprise as the series sets up the Star Trek: Short Treks episode, "Calypso" and officially makes it canon . In "Calypso", Zora (Annabelle Wallis) and the USS Discovery are alone in a region of space for hundreds of years when a soldier named Craft (Aldis Hodge) comes aboard and forms a bittersweet relationship with the lonely A.I. Admiral Burnham tells Zora that Discovery's final voyage is a Red Directive mission , and she only knows the word "Craft" but not who or what it means.

To synch back up with Star Trek: Short Treks ' "Calypso", the USS Discovery is retrofitted back to its 23rd-century Crossfield Class design, with the A removed from its USS Discovery-A designation . Admiral Burnham tells Zora that when they reach their destination, she and the crew will leave. But after Zora meets Craft, the USS Discovery will come back and form a new family with the descendants of her original crew. The final shot of Star Trek: Discovery is the USS Discovery given full honors by Starfleet in a sendoff as it spore jumps to its destiny in "Calypso".

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange" also set up "Calypso" but in an alternate timeline where the Breen destroyed the Federation with the Progenitors' technology.

Star Trek: Discovery Doesn’t Close The Door On Season 6 Or A Movie

There could still be more discovery someday..

Star Trek: Discovery 's ending and epilogue conclude Captain Michael Burnham's story , but despite showing the future of Admiral Burnham and the USS Discovery, the finale's coda still doesn't preclude season 6 or a Star Trek: Discovery streaming movie . After all, Captain Burnham and Discovery launch a new mission in season 5's ending before the flash forward. While Admiral Saru has a new role in Starfleet and Lt. Sylvia Tilly is back at Starfleet Academy, the rest of the USS Discovery's crew presumably flew back into action. And Discovery has many more years of adventures to come that audiences won't see.

Fingers are crossed that Captain Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery will return someday.

For now, Star Trek: Discovery is over and there are no known plans for Star Trek: Discovery season 6 or a reunion movie , but this doesn't mean it couldn't happen in the future after some time has passed. Star Trek on Paramount+ still has Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seasons 3 and 4, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , and Star Trek: Section 31 coming in the next two years. But given that all three of those projects spun off from Star Trek: Discovery , Michael Burnham's show remains crucial to the Star Trek on Paramount+ franchise. Fingers are crossed that Captain Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery will return someday.

“Don’t do this”: Star Trek Nearly Cast Another Actor as Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart Was Never Gene Roddenberry’s First Choice

P atrick Stewart and the Star Trek franchise are not too far from each other. He played the character of Jean Luc Picard for seven long seasons in Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994. Stewart then went on to feature in four more movies, and recently we also saw him return to the beloved role in the series, Star Trek: Picard , which ran for three more seasons from 2020 to 2023.

But it would come as a shock to many Star Trek enthusiasts to know that Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the Star Trek universe did not want Patrick Stewart to play the role of Captain Picard in TNG . And as for Stewart, when he joined the show, he did not think the show would even last the first season. He was just taking a chance to “ make some money ” and “ get a suntan .”

A Battlestar Galactica Actor Was Offered The Lead Role In Star Trek: The Next Generation

When Star Trek: The Next Generation was being made, Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the Star Trek franchise, wanted a very different actor to play the character of Jean Luc Picard. Instead of Sir Patrick Stewart , who was more famous in the theater world back then than movies or television, it was Edward James Olmos, who was offered to play the lead role of the ship’s captain.

While he had to turn down the offer because of other commitments, Olmos later became famous for playing William Adama in the Star Trek like show, Battlestar Galactica . Allegedly, Olmos did not like the sci-fi genre much, and did not want to work on one either. It was after much deliberation that he said yes to Battlestar Galactica , and only because the show was more story driven than about the aliens and the world beyond ours.

“We are not here… to have fun”: Patrick Stewart’s Ruthless Reply to One Star Trek: TNG Actor Who Was Unceremoniously Killed Off in Season 1

In a fascinating turn of events, the Miami Vice actor was also considered for a role in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . Leonard Nimoy, the Star Trek legend famous for playing the Vulcan, Spock, wanted Olmos to play the character of Kruge, a Klingon Commander. The character was later played by Christopher Lloyd.

Patrick Stewart Was Advised Against Taking The Star Trek Job

Patrick Stewart was still more of a theatre actor than a TV or movie star when he got offered the role of Captain Jean Luc Picard. His friends and colleagues even advised him against taking on the job, as it was far from his home and family, and they felt he would shine better in the world of theatre than on the screen. In a conversation with NPR , Stewart once revealed:

I wasn’t going to take it. Indeed, a dear friend of mine and a very important English actor had said to me, “Don’t do this, Patrick. It’s not what you need to do. You’re a very good stage actor. That’s where you ought to be. Don’t do it.”
I remember one actor saying to me, “Sign up for this. Do six months of work. Make some money for the first time in your life. Get well known, get a suntan and go home.”

Patrick Stewart: Star Trek Stopped People from Ending Their Lives Who Said “I wouldn’t be able to see Star Trek anymore”

He further added:

And I thought, “Yeah. That doesn’t sound too bad. I could live with that.” And, of course, our first series lasted seven seasons. And then we made four feature films.

The character of Jean Luc Picard became an important part of the Star Trek franchise and Patrick Stewart a legend. Star Trek: The Next Generation is available for streaming on Paramount+.
