How Do I Get to the Vienna State Opera?

The State Opera is located on the famous Ringstrasse in Vienna's 1st district.

The best way to get to the State Opera is from the Karlsplatz underground station, which you can take the U1, U2 and U4 to.

Alternatively, you can also take the 59A bus or the 1, 2, D, 62 or 71 tram to the Opernring station.

State Opera Cafe

Inside the State Opera is the Café Oper Wien, which it claims is “Vienna’s most musical café”.

The traditional coffee house with Viennese charm is a popular meeting place for music lovers, opera artists and visitors to the opera. With its traditional Viennese coffeehouse ambience and quickly served delicacies, the café attracts with enjoyment and cosiness, especially during the breaks in the performances.

History of the Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera was built between 1863 and 1896 as the successor to the Vienna Court Opera. It was the first house on what was then the new ring road.

The building was designed by the Viennese architects August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll. At the time, however, the building was heavily criticized by the public and was considered an architectural disaster, leading the sensitive van der Nüll to commit suicide. Just two months later, Sicardsburg died of a heart attack, meaning that both architects did not live to see the completion of the building.

Inauguration with Don Giovanni by Mozart

The State Opera was inaugurated on May 25, 1869 with a premiere of Mozart's "Don Giovanni", in which the imperial couple Franz Joseph and Sisi also took part. The opera served as the Imperial Court Theater until the end of the monarchy in 1918. 

During the National Socialist era, there were numerous performance bans and members of the house were persecuted, expelled and murdered. On March 12, 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War, the building was severely damaged by bombardment. The opera house was rebuilt from 1948 to 1955.

The Vienna State Opera has borne its current name since its glamorous reopening on November 5, 1955 with Beethoven's "Fidelio". Over the years, the Vienna State has been the scene of countless premieres and famous performances, in which stars of the opera scene regularly appear.

Today, the Vienna State Opera is one of the leading and most important opera houses in the world and a cultural landmark in Vienna.

Anyone wishing to get a good look around Vienna’s State Opera House has two choices. Either buy a ticket for a performance ( cheaper than you think ) or take an in-house guided tour.

The advantage of the tour is you see one or two fascinating places that the opera goer cannot access.

Go inside the Staatsoper

(Pointing you in the right direction)

The State Opera House ( Staatsoper ) is a grand old building that dominates one part of Vienna’s mighty Ringstrassen boulevard.

The list of famous opera stars who performed here might be considered Wagnerian in length. One of them – Placido Domingo – once received an 80-minute standing ovation for his Othello (a world record).

That Domingo anecdote is one of many you might hear on a guided tour from the Staatsoper’s staff, as you drift through an institution dripping in history and decor.

All is not quite as it seems, however.

Although constructed in 1869, WWII bomb damage wreaked havoc on the building. So today’s State Opera House is part-original, part-restored and part-modern, all of which you see on the tour through foyers, staircases, intermission rooms, and beyond.

Personal highlights for me on the tour I went on were…

• The Teesalon : the average opera goer typically misses this sneak peek into the former private chamber of Emperor Franz Joseph

Large wooden doors lead almost directly to the Emperor’s box and the room has more decorative elements that you can shake a libretto at.

• The Schwindfoyer : a beautifully-restored intermission room dating back to the building’s construction

150-year-old chandeliers light the room, with the walls and ceilings graced by gilt floral decoration, frescoes, and a series of composer busts: Rossini, Mozart, Gluck, Schubert, Haydn, Beethoven, and others who knew their way around sheet music.

• The auditorium and stage : now the technology takes its turn to impress

We slipped around the side of the stage to see just how incredibly large it is and just how many beams, escalators, ropes and mysterious technologies are there to shift scenes and setups when each evening brings a different opera.

We were lucky enough to witness the stagehands preparing for the next performance: ancient Egypt (Aida) gradually replaced 16th-century Cyprus (Otello).

• The Mahlersaal : an intermission room rebuilt in the 1950s, with tapestries portraying scenes from Mozart’s Magic Flute

In one unobtrusive corner sits a travelling piano that belonged to none other than Gustav Mahler . Vienna is full of such gems.

While the sights impress, perhaps the real highlights are the stories, anecdotes and facts whipped out by the tour guide. For example, the State Opera House has some 180,000 costumes at its disposal and 200 stagehands work every day to make those backstage changes.

All-in-all, the tour’s a lovely way to see inside (literally and figuratively) one of the world’s greatest opera venues.

Tickets & visitor tips

Understandably, no fixed schedule exists for tour times, especially during the opera season (usually September to June) when the nature of the ever-changing daily performances can limit access.

Fortunately, the Staatsoper does provide an advance timetable, ticket info, and online booking opportunities here .

Note that a Vienna Pass sightseeing pass includes one-time participation on the tour at the time of writing.

The English tour should usually be available at all scheduled times, and everything was very well-organised and swift on my visit; the opera tour is one of many tours of historical buildings available in Vienna.

Every year, the opera house is transformed into the world's most famous ballroom for the Vienna Opera Ball. Around 150 pairs of young men and women in ball gowns and tails participate in this glamorous display. 

For an amazing treat, a few months each year you can sit out on the Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz in front of the opera building to witness dozens of incredible live opera and ballet performances on an enormous screen. There are even select performances streamed live on the State Opera's website.

A brief history

The Staatsoper was the first major building to be constructed as part of the Ringstrasse  project. Officially opened in 1869 with a premiere by Mozart, it gained popularity over the following decades, thanks to the artistic influence of its first directors.

Both the opera house and company suffered during the dark years of World War II: many members of the house were driven out by the Nazis, and many works were not allowed to be played; then, in 1945, the building was devastated by bombing . Ten years later, the Staatsoper reopened, restored with a new auditorium and new technologies, a symbol of the new life leased to a country that had just regained independence .

Visiting the Vienna State Opera

You can learn all about the tumultuous history of the State Opera as you explore the inside of the building, thanks to guided visits that run throughout the week.

The tours take you from the foyer, which miraculously survived the 1945 bombing, up the magnificent grand staircase to the staterooms. Explore the Tea Salon, where Franz Josef would relax in the intervals, the Marble Hall, and the Gustav Mahler Hall before you reach the auditorium. Here you can admire the stage as you marvel at the sheer size of the 2,800-seater opera hall.

Opera for all budgets

Opera tickets are notoriously expensive but don't write off seeing one of the legendary performances at the Vienna State Opera. While a seat in the stalls can cost a staggering  € 150 ( US$ 160.10), if you don't mind queuing for a couple of hours before a show,  you can buy 'standing room only' tickets to watch the opera for a very accessible  € 4 ( US$ 4.30)!

What's more, on selected dates throughout April, May, June, and September, a series of opera and ballet performances are screened live outside the opera house, allowing visitors to enjoy classical entertainment in a relaxed atmosphere  for free!

For classical music fans like probably you (and me) a night at the opera is one of the best ways to spend an elegant evening in my hometown. As a matter of fact, the Vienna State Opera powers world famous opera singers, the world’s best opera orchestra and the best opera choir. Its repertoire comprises around 50 operas and 20 ballets per season (1st September to 30th June). However, performances at this venue sell fast and are typically 98 percent sold out. 

To enjoy the Vienna State Opera, you don’t need to be an opera buff, or get on waiting lists. As a native, I have gathered a few tips on spending a night at the opera. First and foremost, this includes booking tickets, but also dress code, taking your children to the opera, reading the lyrics, and more.

1. Booking Tickets For The Vienna State Opera

Once the season preview has started you can reserve tickets directly at the Wiener Staatsoper, though you won’t be able to choose your seats. However, as soon as sales start – 2 months before each performance – you can buy and choose your seats.

As for ticket prices for the Vienna State Opera these range from under 10 for standing places to a couple of hundred Euros. While the official ticket seller often puts you on a waiting list, find out in Booking Vienna Opera Tickets where to get tickets fast and with personal advice.

If you visit Vienna over the New Year, take part in a Viennese tradition to see the Johann Strauss opera Die Fledermaus (The Bat).

If you don’t get seats, consider a Vienna State Opera  standing ticket . Be aware that operas can last more than two hours. Avoid a standing place without a view (yes, they exist!).

Tickets for  children  (until 14 years of age) are drawn from a pool of 25 to 100 for each performance, except premieres, New Year’s Eve performances and Wagner’s RING cycle operas. There is a single ticket price of around EUR 15 for all children, independent of the chosen ticket category.

2. What Is The Dress Code At The Opera And More

Conveniently, all seats allow you to access English surtitles for each performance, as well as surtitles in Italian, French, Russian and Japanese. Before the performances and during the intervals, you can also read opera and ballet synopses, and information on the cast. 

If you get a standing place , mark it with a scarf or something similar when you leave your place during the break.

What to wear? Actually, there is no formal dress code for the opera house in Vienna. Consider taking black tie dressing with you to celebrate the evening at the Vienna State Opera, though not required. (You will stick out less as a tourist in truly elegant attire during Christmas and New Year.) Smart casual does it very well.

3. Is Photography And Filming Allowed At The Vienna Opera?

As with opera houses around the world, photographing or filming is not allowed during the performances. However, take your camera with you and take photos before and after the performances to capture the ambiance.

4. What To Do After A Vienna Opera Performance?

When the opera finishes and you are hungry follow the locals to a Vienna sausage stand? As odd as it seems to bite into a sausage in your smart outfit this is a cherished tradition. Alternatively, head for nearby Sacher Eck of Hotel Sacher for a Sacher sausage.

5. Vienna Opera Premieres 2024

In 2024, the Wiener Staatsoper  and Vienna Volksoper will stage no less than 13 premieres, among them Mozart’s Cosí Fan Tutte, The Abduction from the Seraglio and The Marriage of Figaro ; and Puccini’s Turandot, Il Trittico and La Rondine . Especially in Vienna, you can witness at buzz of excitement at opera premieres, introducint a brand-new production for the first time. While tickets usually go on sale two months in advance on the first of each month for the entire month, you can book them here much in advance.

Behind Vienna's scene: the best backstage tours

Vienna is considered to be a city of stages – and not without reason. Every year, world-famous operas, concerts, musicals and plays cast millions of visitors from around the world under their spell. There is plenty to discover not only in front of but also behind the scenes of Vienna's most famous cultural venues.

Backstage tour at ORF

In everyday Viennese life, most roads lead past the television and radio broadcasters of Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF). Whether Eurovision Song Contest, New Year's Concert or Ski Alpin: the ORF program, with its four TV stations, often produces memorable moments, excitement, and sometimes also tears of joy. A tour behind the scenes at ORF gives you the possibility to experience Austria's largest media not only in front of TVs and radios. The guided tours through the backstage areas of the TV studios are suitable for everyone (including children) and offer all sorts of interesting information. They are held in German as well as in English or Italian on request.

Behind the musical scenes at the Ronacher

The Ronacher has a unique story to tell: burned down in 1884, twelve years after its construction, rebuilt, and used as a temporary home for the Burgtheater after the Second World War, the Ronacher has now established itself as a permanent feature on the musicals scene . Which makes a backstage tour all the more exciting, because it not only presents historical facts but also gives exciting insights into the world of the musical. The guided tour lasts about an hour and is offered in German only.

Between splendor and prestige: the Burgtheater

As Austria's national theater, the Burgtheater is not only one of the largest and oldest spoken theaters in the Europe but is also considered to be the richest repertoire theater in the world. The prestigious building, whose stairways are adorned with ceiling paintings by Gustav Klimt and Ernst Klimt, is especially impressive thanks to its splendid architecture. The guided tours of the Burgtheater also focus mainly on these areas. The backstage tours are held in German and some in English with a written summary in French, Italian, Spanish, Russian or Japanese.

A house full of music

The Musikverein , home to the annual New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic , enchants countless music fans at home on TV and on location in one of the most beautiful and acoustically brilliant concert halls in the world. This magnificent building, which was constructed based on models from Greek antiquity, is located not far from Schwarzenbergplatz in downtown Vienna. From ballet to Opera Ball

With almost 60 different operas and 21 ballets on around 300 days per season, the Vienna State Opera is one of the best-known opera houses in the world. A guided tour of the State Opera is an absolute must both for locals and for guests from around the world. A 40-minute tour will take you right behind the scenes of the magnificent opera building, where a total of 950 people ensure everything runs smoothly every day. The backstage guided tours are held in German, English, and Spanish – and by arrangement also in Italian, French, Russian, and Japanese. At each performance, the Burgtheater provides places in the stalls with acoustic amplification by means of induction for visitors who wear a hearing aid. The Box Office is open 9am-7pm (Monday-Friday) and 9am-1pm on Saturdays.

For all concerts organised by the Musikverein the Box Office opens one hour before the beginning of the performance (also on Saturday, Sunday and on public holidays).

Make Your Debut At The Vienna Opera Ball

To be accepted into the Young Ladies and Young Men's Committee, a few requirements must be met:

• You have very good left-hand waltz skills
• On the day of the Opera Ball (27 February 2025), you are at least 18 and max. 25 (young ladies) or max. 28 (young men) years old.
• You have not yet opened the Vienna Opera Ball (opening is only possible once)

We look forward to receiving your application via the application form on our website starting on 3 June 2024. The application deadline is 17 September 2024. Please understand that applications can only be accepted in pairs.

Application form

After reviewing all applications, dance couples from Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland (as well as Linz & Wels) will be invited to audition at the Vienna State Opera on Saturday, October 19, 2024.

Applicants from other federal states and abroad can voluntarily come to the audition or alternatively send in a video showing their left waltz skills. Here, too, an invitation will be sent out after the application deadline with more details about what this video should show.

All applicants, will be informed by e-mail until the end of November 2024 whether they have been chosen to open the Vienna Opera Ball 2025 as part of the Young Ladies' and Young Gentlemen's Committee.

We ask for your understanding that we must reserve the right to exclude couples from the opening committee who do not meet the necessary dance requirements during the rehearsals, despite having previously agreed to do so.

A committee ticket for the Vienna Opera Ball 2025 costs € 140.

With the confirmation email, the debutants will receive all information regarding rehearsal dates and how to pick up the committee tickets.

During the preparation phase the following rehearsals will take place on the weekends before the ball:

• 3 rehearsals in Vienna for couples from Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland as well as Linz and Wels (09., 15. & 16. February 2025)
• 1 rehearsal in Vienna for couples from the other federal provinces (not from Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland) and for international couples (22. February 2025)

Additional rehearsals for all couples:

• 2 main rehearsals in the Gustav Mahler Hall of the Vienna State Opera (22. & 23. February 2025)
• Dress rehearsal on Wednesday, 26 February 2025 (in the Ballroom of the Vienna State Opera)

In order to be allowed to debut at the Vienna State Opera Opera Ball, attendance at all assigned rehearsals is mandatory.

• Hairstyle in which the tiara can be incorporated without slipping, long hair must be worn pinned up
