Global Cruise Market Share by Type

The ocean cruises segment, based on type, accounts for a healthy share of the cruise market. This can be attributed to the fact that ocean cruise offers a greater number of routes which expands the range of destinations for cruisers. As oceans are significantly large, ships and vessels of bigger sizes can be used for ocean cruises, increasing the number of activities and facilities supported while reducing costs as more people can be accommodated in a single vessel. Moreover, ocean cruise comes with notable advantages such as visits to notable coastal cities during the cruise and insurance against harsh weather conditions.

Global Cruise Market Share by Region

Based on region, North America occupies a sizable share of the market for cruises, supported by the immense popularity of cruises and a vast network of waterways. The strong foothold of cruise service providers in the United States, coupled with the stable living standards is driving the market. Meanwhile, the European region is likely to be a fast-growing region in the forecast period, owing to the growing popularity of river cruising. In line with this, the increasing inclination of the population towards shore excursions and cruise fares is further fuelling the Europe cruise market.

Cruise Market Watch

Growth of the Ocean Cruise Line Industry

Worldwide, the ocean cruise industry experienced an annual passenger compound annual growth rate of 5.9% from 1990 to 2024.

While the COVID-19 pandemic brought the ocean passenger cruise industry to a standstill for nearly two years, it also prompted the accelerated retirement of numerous older ships. Simultaneously, new additions to fleets adopted a more modern and environmentally friendly approach. In 2024, passenger numbers are expected to surpass the pre-COVID levels of 2019.

Between 2023 and 2024, a total of 10 new ships, with a combined passenger capacity of 25,450, are set to be added (refer to the tables below). This influx will bring the worldwide ocean cruise passenger capacity to 673,000, spread across 360 ships. These vessels are projected to carry a total of 30.0 million passengers by the end of 2024, representing a 4.2% increase over 2023 and a 9.2% increase over 2019.

A cruise is a multi-day vacation plan that is arranged on a cruise ship large inland while visiting numerous tourist attractions along a planned route. On this kind of trip, the focus is mostly on the ship’s accommodations as well as tourist-attractive locations. The global cruise market is being driven by the expanding hospitality and tourist industries.

Ships are introducing new technologies, a variety of exciting activities, as well as enjoyable themes for travelers, including yoga themes, kid themes, mystery themes, and others. Such innovations are attracting different populations and acquiring massive popularity among the target audience, which is driving the cruise business. The market is expected to increase as a result of the new generation’s increasing preference for leisure travel and adventures with the rising number of people who want to live a luxurious life.

cruise market

Consumer Demand:

Cruise lines have seen an exponential rise in demand over recent years as more travelers search for unique travel experiences. This has led to growth within the industry, as cruise lines expand their fleets and add new routes to keep up with demand.

Innovation:

Cruise lines are constantly innovating and introducing new features and amenities to attract customers. This includes everything from entertainment options to advanced technology and unique dining experiences.

Expansion of Cruise Line Offerings:

Cruise lines are expanding their services to include niche markets like adventure cruises, river cruises, and small-ship cruising to appeal to different types of travelers.

Natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes can disrupt cruise itineraries and impact passenger safety. Geopolitical impacts such as terrorism or political instability also impact cruise demand and itinerary planning. Building and maintaining a cruise ship requires significant capital, which limits market participants, creating limited competition and less price flexibility.

Furthermore, environmental regulations in the industry contribute to higher operational costs which in turn reduce profit margins; cruise lines must invest in cleaner technologies to reduce their environmental footprint, adding to their expenses. Outbreaks of contagious illnesses like COVID-19 can damage the reputation of the cruise industry and sap consumer confidence in sailing.

This could result in decreased demand and revenue for cruise lines. Cruising is typically seasonal, with most travelers opting for cruises during summer holidays. Lower occupancy rates and revenue during off-peak periods impact profitability for cruise companies. Negative media coverage such as reports of passenger injuries or crimes further weakens consumer trust in cruising leading to decreased bookings overall.

Expansion in Emerging Markets

The worldwide cruise market offers several prospects for growth and development, including emerging markets, sustainable tourism, technical improvements, specialized cruises, upselling opportunities, and partnerships and collaborations. Emerging markets such as Asia and South America present major growth prospects for the cruise industry.

These regions boost a growing travel demand, creating an expansive customer base for cruise lines. Furthermore, with growing awareness about the environmental effects of tourism comes an increased interest in sustainable tourism practices; cruise lines that implement sustainable practices and offer eco-friendly itineraries can attract eco-conscious tourists.

Furthermore, advances in technology such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and the Internet of Things have the potential to enhance passenger experiences on board while improving operational efficiencies for cruise lines. Specialist cruises, such as wellness cruises, adventure cruises, and culinary cruises can appeal to niche markets and give cruise lines a chance to stand out from competitors.

Cruise lines can generate additional revenue by offering onboard amenities and services like spa treatments, shore excursions, and specialty dining options. Collaborations and partnerships with other travel companies, such as airlines and hotels, can enable cruise lines to extend their reach and offer customers more comprehensive travel experiences.

The global cruise market is expanding in support of luxury experiences, multigenerational travel, wellness and health, sustainability, and the digital revolution. Cruise lines that can anticipate these developments and respond appropriately will likely be successful in the highly competitive cruise market.  River cruising has become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly in Europe and Asia.

River cruises offer a more intimate setting with smaller ships and the chance to visit remote destinations. Sustainability has become a top priority for the cruise industry, with many lines adopting eco-friendly practices such as using clean energy sources, reducing single-use plastics, and encouraging responsible tourism.

Cruise lines are investing in technology to enhance their passengers’ experiences, from mobile apps and wearable devices to virtual reality headsets and AI-powered assistants. Wellness and health have become a major priority for the cruise industry, with many lines offering onboard fitness facilities, healthy dining options, and wellness-themed activities.

Cruise lines are catering to this trend by offering family-friendly amenities like onboard water parks and kids’ clubs. Luxurious and experiential cruises have seen a resurgence in the cruise market, with travelers demanding amenities such as private balconies, and exclusive dining venues. Many are seeking authentic cultural encounters; cruise lines have responded by providing shore excursions that showcase local customs, traditions, and cuisine.

The ocean cruises Segment Accounted for the Largest Revenue Share in the Cruise Market

Based on type, the cruise market is segmented into ocean cruises and river cruises. Among these types, the Oceans Cruises segment is the most lucrative in the global cruise market, with a projected total revenue of 80%. The larger market revenue share is attributed to strong players who provide services in the ocean cruises category for transcontinental travel in large numbers. Also, a sizable portion of customers favor ocean cruises over other types of cruises because of the interesting packages, amenities, and entertainment options.

These activities are possible aboard large ocean cruise ships, which offer more room than the others. The global river cruise market is expected to have the fastest growth rate, rising at a CAGR of 13.3%. This growing popularity among vacationers can be attributed to river cruising’s larger size compared to ocean cruises which usually dock along coastal regions. Rivers offer more internal destinations for sightseeing, especially in Europe where some cruise lines offer tours through multiple countries. For instance, Danube River cruises traverse 10 nations within Europe.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the global cruise market, leading to reduced demand, refunds, operational challenges, decreased revenue, shifts in consumer behavior, and regulatory adjustments. The industry will need to navigate these challenges to recover and rebuild passenger confidence in cruising.

Due to the pandemic, cruise lines have seen a reduction in demand for their services, with many potential passengers opting to postpone or cancel their travel plans due to safety fears. Due to travel restrictions and safety worries, many sailings have had to be canceled. Because of these events, significant financial losses have occurred and customers are now demanding refunds.

The pandemic has also presented cruise lines with several operational difficulties, such as implementing new health and safety protocols and managing crew members who have tested positive for COVID-19. The suspension of operations and decreased demand for cruise lines have resulted in significant revenue losses, which may impact their long-term financial viability.

Furthermore, the pandemic has caused changes in consumer behavior such as an increased focus on health and safety that may influence which types of cruises passengers seek and which amenities are offered. The pandemic has led to increased regulatory scrutiny of the cruise industry, with many countries enforcing new health and safety rules that may impact cost and feasibility when operating cruises.

North America Accounted for the Largest Revenue Share in Cruise Market in 2022.

North America dominated the cruise market with the largest revenue share of 50%. Due mainly to its strong presence of international key players and highly developed industry. Higher disposable income levels, consumer spending patterns, and an expanding tourism industry all played their respective roles in driving up market revenue share significantly. The Asia Pacific region is forecast to experience the highest growth rate over the forecast period, with a CAGR of 12.1%.

Recently, cruise industry activity has shifted away from North America and Europe towards Asia Pacific due to government initiatives to develop tourism and increase economic output. For instance, on August 19th, 2020 the Indian government announced the reduction of 70% of berth charges to promote cruise tourism.

Europe ranked second in terms of revenue share in 2021 with over 25% share, expected to achieve an impressive CAGR during the forecast period. The growth is attributed to an uptick in demand for sustainable tourism which in turn makes local communities more appealing to small and medium-sized tour operators, propelling market expansion even further.

2017 to 2021 Caribbean Cruises Market Outlook Compared to 2022 to 2032 Forecast

The Caribbean is referred to as the region engulfed in the scenic beauty of the Caribbean Sea. It is a large chain of islands that includes regions having great value in the tourism sector. Bahamas, Bermuda, Eastern Caribbean, Florida, Greater Antilles, Gulf of Mexico, Southern Caribbean, and Western Caribbean fall under the Caribbean region. The eastern Caribbean consists of various islands such as St. Thomas, the Great Turk, and St. Maarten which are famous for their world-class beaches, sting rays, and never-ending water activities.

On the other hand, the western Caribbean has its historic importance and natural beauty. Mayan ruins offering the eco-adventures, the benevolent atmosphere of Jamaica, the profuse wild essence of southern Mexico, underground caves on the Island of Cozumel, and untouched coral reefs of Belize and Roatan are what interest travelers. Southern Caribbean is popular for its culture and colonial past including the exquisite landscape of Dominica, the far-flung isles of Aruba, Curacao, and Bonaire. This vast spectrum of experiences makes the Caribbean and cruising a perfect match.

The Upcoming Changes after the Pandemic Expected to Boost the Cruise Industry

The coronavirus pandemic had a great impact on the Caribbean cruise market which caused the Caribbean cruises to be anchored at the ports. There was a major decline in the economy generated by the cruises which contributed a major part of the Caribbean economy. Gradually the situation is getting under control. This has caused travelers to come out of their houses and monotonous schedule. Caribbean being the top tourist destination, the cruising industry is also getting back to normal as more and more people are opting for Caribbean cruise journeys. The Caribbean Cruise industry is expected to grow at a rapid rate after the conditions have normalized and people want to get out of their homes to explore and satisfy their hunger for travel.

Royal Caribbean all set to launch its brand new Singapore cruises

Royal Caribbean announced its new 2023 to 2024 cruises from Singapore on the cruise named Spectrum of the Seas. They are presenting a wide range of packages from 5- to 12-night sailings to Japan, Thailand, Vietnam Malaysia, & more. Spectrum will also have an option of short cruises to Thailand and Malaysia. The spectrum includes two 12-night cruises which mean that the travellers can visit 7 destinations in only one sailing. In addition, Royal Caribbean will be offering 3-4 days short sailings to Phuket, Thailand and Penang, Malaysia.

The spectrum of the Seas offers a number of adventure activities on board which makes it different from other quantum-class cruise ships. It has the first Skypad on board which provides a virtual bungee trampoline experience. The amazing suite enclave on board also includes a royal suite class star which gives options to the travellers to relax by the sea or under the sky specially positioned in the front area of the cruise. Furthermore, they also provide 19 different options of world-class cuisine to make the traveller's experience out of this world.

Cruise Lines Ease the Pandemic Era Protocols for the Passenger’s Convenience

Several cruise lines have started to accept the results of the Covid test performed at the homes of unvaccinated passengers. Starting September 5, 2022, Royal Caribbean will start welcoming vaccinated as well as unvaccinated passengers of all ages on board. Along with royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Carnival cruise lines have also agreed to support these changes in the protocols.

This new rule will not be applicable for the cruises that visit Bermuda and Canada as these regions still have strict Covid regulations. The passengers will just have to submit a photo of their self-performed test to the cruise lines before getting on board. This industry-wide trend falls under the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which has recently ended the pandemic for cruise travel. This will ease the difficulties on the traveler's end and make the process go cruise booking hassle-free.

Introduction of New Itineraries Flourishes the US Caribbean Cruise Market

Participants in the USA Caribbean cruise market may offer a wide range of itineraries, introduce new locations, and give additional opportunities for visitors to taste our distinctive international flavor by bringing more ships to the USA

The biggest brands are ready to have passed Carnival Cruise Line due to its big ships and the fact that Carnival likewise reduced the fleet during the pandemic. For instance, the Royal Caribbean brand is expected to have a higher annual passenger capacity in the North American market than Carnival, which is expected to be slightly under 3 million passengers, according to the 2021 Cruise Industry News Annual Report.

Moreover, Silversea is likely to be the largest operator among the ultra-luxury brands, followed by Regent Seven Seas, Crystal, Seabourn, and Windstar. Viking Ocean will dominate the luxury sector.

Private businesses in the Bahamas Keeping up a healthy Caribbean Cruise Market Share

In June 2021, Adventure of the Seas finished its first home porting ceremony at Grand Bahama Island, with over 1,000 passengers, government representatives, and important business executives welcomed by Royal Caribbean International.

The pandemic had a significant impact on the Bahamas' economy, although Grand Bahamas' proximity to South Florida helps it maintain its status as a well-liked tourist destination as travel restrictions are gradually relaxed. The cruise ports in Nassau and Freeport, which have historically failed in terms of cruise guest engagement and spending, have also been awarded concessions to be redeveloped by private enterprises.

The waterfront in Nassau was renovated for $250 million by Global Ports Holdings and a group of Bahamian investors. In Freeport, a $195 million contract between Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and Mexico's ITM Group has been reached to enlarge the harbor and renovate the Grand Lucayan hotel.

How are the Government Initiatives boosting the Caribbean Cruising Market?

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC ] ceases the reporting of Covid 19 cases on board. They will no longer show the current state of Covid 19 transmission by their colour-coded chart system while cruising as the situation is well under control according to the officials. Cruise market trends: How to sail through the disruptive landscape?

Cruise market trends

March 22, 2021 •

8 min reading

At the beginning of 2020, the ocean cruises industry was one of the fastest growing sectors of the travel industry. No less than 55 cruise companies operate 278 ocean cruise line ships, with another 28 new ships that will be delivered in 2021. In addition to the ocean cruise sailing capacity, there are over 500 river cruise ships. Ocean, river and specialty cruise lines represent more than 95% of the global cruise capacity. Market segments of ocean cruise lines companies can be clustered into first class, premium or contemporary, luxury and specialty cruise lines. In 2019 the worth of the world cruise industry, was more than $150 billion in direct and indirect revenues.

According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largest cruise industry trade organization, the number of cruise ship passengers has increased from 17.8 million in 2009 to 30 million in 2019, an annual growth rate of 5.4%. Prior to the business lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the forecast for 2020 was a further increase to 32 million passengers. In 2019, the most popular cruise destination was the Caribbean region (42% of all cruise), followed by the Mediterranean (16%), Asia and China (14%), and Northern Europe (6%). In 2019 the number of passengers split by origin, was the following (data in millions): 15.41 were North American, 7.71 European and 3.75 Asia.

The average age of passengers was 46.7 years. However, considering that Generation Z surpassed Millennials as the largest demographic group in 2020, the average will eventually decrease in the next decades as the Z Generation is considered to become one of the largest market segment in the cruise industry.

Major trends that will shape the industry over the next decade, include:

  • Environmental sustainability: the industry is investing heavily in waste reduction with innovative cutting edge environmental technology, such as the use of liquified natural gas (LNG), exhaust gas cleaning (EGCS), advanced water treatment systems and shoreside electricity;
  • Responsible tourism: cruise lines are working with local communities to find the best way to manage the flow of passengers visiting each port of call, to protect the culture, the environment, the unique heritage and landscape of destinations visited;
  • Catering to single cruisers: sales strategies are now much more sensitive to the needs of “solo” cruisers;
  • Theme cruises, alternative destinations and duration of cruises: the continued growth of luxury expedition cruising, alternative destinations such as private islands and marine reserves and the growing number of two- and three-day micro-cruises;
  • New onboard IT digital experience: the growing interest of Millennials and Generation Z in cruises, which will become the largest consumer generation, is driving the upgrade of internet connectivity on-board. Cruise ships are massively investing the availability of in line apps, wearable technology (multifunctional bracelets that include geolocation system), cabin voice recognition devices, facial recognition cameras, touch screen devices for on-board service reservations, digital concierge services, robotics (bartenders preparing and service cocktails e.g.) and health apps;
  • New innovative onboard concept venues and accommodation: cruise passengers are increasingly looking for a sense of privacy, different service experiences and entertainment;
  • Last but not least, the mandatory adoption of COVID-19 related measures to ensure a safe and healthy on-board environment for all passengers and crew members.

Major trends in the cruise market

Cruising through the new disruptive COVID-19 scenario

Cruise line companies seeking to emerge in a stronger position after the pandemic should develop a systematic understanding of how passengers’ habits have changed during the crisis and how it affects their behavior within their entire customer journey: from the decision-making process that is leading travelers to select a cruise company, down to their trip back home after disembarkation. Which variables will passengers take into consideration in selecting their next cruise? What do passengers expect in terms of safety and health standards? How will cruise lines keep their ships free from COVID-19, and how will they prepare themselves for further outbreaks? These are key aspects that cruise companies need to fully understand keeping their loyal passengers and to bring in Generation Z as well.

Disruptive business crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, further enforce the logic that corporate strategies is the way a company select a competitive positioning. While operations strategy is the way to reach and defend the competitive position chosen by the company. It means that relevant new requirements, COVID-19 related, need to embrace the business mainly at two levels: corporate and operations which remain the strongest competitive advantage for a cruise line company. New protocols have been developed to implement measures which aim at minimizing the exposure to and transmission of COVID-19 on board its cruise vessels and through all the customer journey when applicable. The way the protocols will be implemented within the operations, will ensure the consolidation of the longstanding competitive advantages cruise companies have achieved until the COVID-19 crises.

From a corporate prospective the main focus will be on ensuring a consistent level of governance and compliance with the protocols conceived according to rules, regulations issued by governments and national public health institutes. A resilient monitoring of the pandemic must be also a priority. The target is to constantly deliver a safe and healthy experience to passengers preserving the service excellence guests were used to, before the COVID-19 pandemic crises. It goes without saying that crew members and employees ashore, who represent the strongest asset in any hospitality business, will play a strategical role in developing, implementing and keeping the new standards up to date.

From an operational viewpoint, cruise companies will implement new procedures which will impact the passengers cruise experience and the on-board operations such as pretesting and vaccination for all passengers and crew members, embarkation and disembarkation, social distancing in public areas, on-board back and front of the house operations, medical and public health standards and shore excursions activities. Health and safety have always been paramount to the way the cruise business has been run. With procedures already in place before the pandemic and the new protocols, cruise companies will be able to ensure the necessary high standards of safe and healthy operations guests are expecting to cruise with full confidence.

Disruption to the cruise market

Which value proposition for future landscapes

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, cruise companies are progressing on existing fleet expansion projects and restarting shipyards operations that were put on hold in 2020. While the delivery dates have been extended, no large ocean cruise ship orders have been canceled since the industry went on pause. The new building continues also in the cruise-ferries and river ships business.

When the industry will restart, the passengers experience and the operations are likely to look very different on board. Cruise companies are picturing cruise ships as the safest form of travel for the future, promoting the vessels as a COVID-19 free environment or “bubble” and communication strategies are focused on the effective implementation of tested protocols. Time will confirm whether it will be enough to cope with the pandemic crises or if it will be necessary to re-conceive the core of the cruise business itself in the long run (itinerary planning, size of the vessels, product and services offered on board e.g.).

The key leverages in facing the new landscape remain the on-board operations and the crew members, crucial in facilitating and guiding passengers through the cruise experience at sea. This is where the core competitive advantage of cruise companies lays.

In this context, EHL Advisory Services’ value proposition to the cruise business is based on:

  • Developing corporate strategies to meet new market trends and challenges, preserve and add value to the business;
  • Developing health protocols;
  • Designing and implementing on-board operational procedure focused on cost controlling, inventory     management and replenishment, ensuring corporate governance and compliance;
  • Developing tailor-made training programs to enhance service excellence at sea;
  • Managing business development projects.

Small cruises are big this summer. here’s what’s on the horizon.

When it comes to cruising, small is big this summer.

Expedition cruises, small-ship cruises, and sustainable cruises are attracting more travelers, some of whom haven't taken a vacation since the start of the pandemic.

Smaller is better for passengers like Peter Hoagland, a consultant from Warrenton, Va. He and his wife don't like getting lost on the enormous ocean-going vessels operated by the major cruise lines.

"The smaller ships often have better access to ports than huge ships," he says. "They can be more expensive than large high passenger ships, but we find them a good value nonetheless."

But small doesn't just refer to the size of the ship, but also its carbon footprint and perhaps a smaller itinerary — visiting just one destination instead of multiple ports of call.

Best Travel Insurance Companies

Best covid travel insurance plans, taking passengers to remote places.

Take expedition cruises, for example. It's the fastest-growing market segment in the cruise industry, according to a recent industry report . In the past decade, bookings have been up 450 percent.

Cruise lines like Hurtigruten have experienced a rise in reservations because they check all the right boxes. Their ships are small, many of them go to hard-to-reach destinations like Antarctica or the Galapagos, and they focus on sustainability. Anders Lindström, a cruise line spokesman, says they'll have three ships operating in Greenland, "taking visitors to some of the most remote places," he says.

The small ships have the cruise industry buzzing, say travel professionals.

"This is the first time in history that some of the specialty cruises – expedition ships, cruises to Arctic and Antarctic regions, river cruising in Asia and Africa – feel like more people are talking about it," says Stephanie Goldberg-Glazer, owner of Live Well, Travel Often , a boutique travel agency.

She says now that COVID is fading, her clients want to do the big bucket list trips now and not wait for some unspecified time in the future.

"For many people, this includes a cruise that is a little out of their comfort zone," she explains.

So what's out there if you want a small cruise experience?

There are plenty of options for passengers who want a more intimate cruise adventure:

  • New small cruise itineraries. Travel professionals are talking about new offerings from Abercrombie & Kent under the A&K Luxury Expedition Cruises banner. For this summer, the tour operator has unveiled new expedition cruises to the Seychelles, Greece, French Polynesia, Portugal, and France, among others.
  • The rise of "ultra" luxe cruises. Explora Journeys , the new luxury lifestyle brand from the MSC Group, is launching its first ship, the Explora I in July. Guests will enjoy spaces that offer relaxed luxury, culinary experiences focused on healthy local food, and curated entertainment, according to the cruise line. Its inaugural cruise will take passengers from England to Belgium, Norway, and Denmark. Travel advisors predict Explora will be a "hit."
  • Specialty cruises. Even bigger cruise lines are getting in on the action. Regent Seven Seas Cruises , for example, has collaborated with Fabergé to create two new "spotlight" sailings that will bring guests into the world of Fabergé with small group master-class programs, exclusive access to unique and intimate shore-side tours, jeweled egg demonstrations and lectures.

By the way, creating a cruise itinerary not easy and many travelers prefer working with a travel expert. Here’s my guide to booking a cruise .

Advice for booking a small cruise this summer

If you're interested in an expedition cruises, small-ship cruises, or an environmentally-friendly cruise this summer, how do you go about booking one?

Look for local guidance and experiences

Brian FitzGerald, CEO of Overseas Adventure Travel , recommends connecting with a cruise line that has a deep understanding of your destination. "Look for someone who has local people and provides the kind of firsthand knowledge and insight that make local history, culture, and traditions come alive," he says. And if you're heading somewhere far away, don't forget to ask if their tour guides speak English and have the skills, certification, and experience necessary to ensure an enriching adventure.

Ask about the deals

They're still out there. A travel professional can help you find them. Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic has an offer that could save families thousands of dollars. For bookings completed by June 30, each child 22 and under will travel free with a full-fare paying adult in double occupancy cabins on select Arctic 2023 departures. "Kids cruise free" deals are not unheard of, but most deals set age limits of 18, 14, and sometimes younger than 12.

Be creative

If you want to cruise somewhere this summer, you may have some trouble finding availability, say experts. Many cruises get booked a year or more in advance. Linda Speer, a master cruise counselor , says aiming for the early or later part of the summer can yield the best results. "Consider cooler destinations for peak summer," she adds. "Prime examples are Alaska, the Baltic and Northern Europe. Europe is warming, and now mid-summer can be brutally hot in bucket list destinations such as Paris and Rome."

Find a repositioning cruises if you want to save

"Some of the best values for cruising can be found in expedition ship repositioning cruises," says Clark Mitchell, a luxury cruise and travel specialist . For example, he just returned from a repositioning cruise on the Seabourn Venture . The ship had been in Antarctica all winter and is transitioning to the Arctic for the summer. "They were offering a seven-night Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro for 40 percent off the regular fare, coupled with all-inclusive ultra-luxury service," he notes. The regular fare was $4,999 per person, and they had a sale for $2,699. Mitchell says similar savings are available in Europe and West Coast sailings before and after the Alaska season.

Yacht at the sea in Europe. Many small-ship cruises will take you to Europe and beyond this summer.

One more thing before you set sail

Cruise lines are pulling out the stops this summer with new ships, new itineraries and special offers. And with some advice from a professional, you can easily navigate all these choices and find the best small cruise.

But before you go, a note about timing and travel insurance. First, if you're thinking of cruising this summer, you should also think about how to protect your cruise.

Cruise lines have made it more convenient to buy insurance as part of the fare. But experts warn that the travel insurance offered by cruise lines may not cover as much of your trip as you think. Read your policy carefully, advises Angela Borden, a product strategist at Seven Corners . Make sure it covers your flights to and from the port of departure and any hotels you book before boarding.

"Protection purchased from your cruise line may only cover the cost of the cruise itself," she adds.

And second, you should plan as far ahead as possible.

"Specialty cruising is in demand, but you need to plan ahead," says Annie Scrivanich, senior vice president of Cruise Specialists . "Early is the name of the game. Book early, arrive at port early, and if your passport is anywhere near expiring, renew early."

In other words, get ahead of this trend — or you will miss the boat.

This summer's expedition cruises, small-ship cruises, and sustainable cruises could change the cruise industry by adding more choices and shifting consumer expectations.

Princess is launching an all-inclusive, 4-month, around-the-world cruise for $20,000— see what it'll be like

  • Princess Cruises announced a 114-day  world cruise to 52 destinations in 2026, starting at $20,000 per person.
  • Guests who book early would get a free, all-inclusive package, a first for Princess' global itineraries.
  • Extended and all-inclusive cruises have emerged as big trends in the vacation industry.

Insider Today

Princess Cruise's new around-the-world voyage will hit two vacation trends in one itinerary.

In January 2026, the company says its Coral Princess will embark on a 114-day cruise to 52 ports in 28 countries and six continents — more destinations than any of its previous global sailings .

It's the Carnival Corp brand's latest appeal to the extended cruising trend . But it's not the only fad this four-month vacation is targeting.

The sailing, which starts at $20,000 per person, also marks the first time Princess is offering a complimentary all-inclusive package as a way to entice early bookings.

Ultra-long and all-inclusive cruises have emerged as big trends in the industry.

Regent Seven Seas, Azamara, and Oceania's 2024 around-the-world cruises all sold out before departing in January. The former was fully booked within three hours, while every cabin on the latter was called for in 30 minutes.

Besides being high-end, these three companies share one commonality: some level of all-inclusiveness , as is common with premium cruise lines.

Mass-market cruise companies rarely go the all-inclusive route.

Princess, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian are generally beloved for their affordability.

But if you want to experience all their ships have to offer, be prepared to face a list of up-charged amenities like pay-to-play rides and specialty restaurants . After all, there's a reason their base fares are much cheaper than their increasingly popular ultra-luxury, all-inclusive counterparts.

But Princess has been increasingly vying for a slice of the luxury cruiser pie.

sea cruise market

The cruise line says guests who book its 2026 world cruise early (that is, by the end of October) will receive its most inclusive Princess Premier package for free. The perk — launched two years ago — covers amenities that typically have a fee, like WiFi, premium drinks, some specialty restaurants, and workout classes.

Travelers who reserve one of the ship's high-end cabins by the same deadline would also receive complimentary airport transfers and airfare, services normally exclusively offered by luxury cruise lines .

The itinerary would have two roundtrip embarkation options: Fort. Lauderdale, Florida, on January 5, 2026, or Los Angeles 16 days later.

From there, the 2,000-guest Coral Princess would sail more than 35,000 nautical miles to ports in North America, the Pacific Islands, New Zealand and Australia, Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Central and South America.

It wouldn't be Princess' longest voyage — that title goes to its 116-day world cruise in 2025 — but it would be one of its most destination-heavy.

While two days longer, next year's around-the-world cruise would hit six fewer ports and four fewer countries than its 2026 counterpart.

According to the itinerary, about half of the 2026 voyage consists of sea days.

sea cruise market

That's a lot of time on the water with no land in sight. Luckily, travelers can keep themselves entertained by attending lectures and programs related to the destinations, leisuring around the adult-only lounge, or taking a dip in Coral Princess' four pools.

The 21-year-old ship also has 10 places to grab a bite, although the Italian and steakhouse restaurants are considered specialty. Premier is the cruise line's most inclusive package, but it only includes 16 free dinners at these upcharge restaurants, paced once a week.

Princess is still a mass-market cruise line, after all.

The company has been increasingly dangling its inclusive package as a big perk.

The company says its two-month-old Sun Princess will debut in the US in October with its first-ever Sanctuary Collection . Travelers who splurge on these expensive and luxurious accommodations would be rewarded with two major benefits: a private lounge and Princess Premier.

VESSEL REVIEW | Mustai Karim – Sea and river-capable newbuild to serve Moscow cruise market

sea cruise market

The Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) has handed over a new cruise ship to local operator Vodohod. Designed by naval architects Marine Engineering Bureau (MEB), the newbuild has been named Mustai Karim after a famed twentieth century Russian poet.

MEB has claimed Mustai Karim is the first river-sea cruise passenger vessel to be built in Russia in over 60 years. It belongs to the Project PV300 series, which was designed to be capable of operations in both inland waters and the open sea. Also, the vessel is intended to function as a “floating four- or five-star hotel” in accordance with the operator’s wishes.

“This is the first and the biggest passenger vessel whose dimensions satisfy the maximum limits of the Volga-Don shipping channel,” MEB told Baird Maritime . “It is also the only river cruise ship that is permitted to pass underneath the raised Neva River bridges in Saint Petersburg with passengers on board, thanks in part to a propulsion arrangement that includes two 360-degree rotating, fixed-pitch propellers, a 530kW bow thruster, and an efficient hull form. This arrangement also allows the vessel to moor in Saint Petersburg’s historical city centre, which is a favourite destination among tourists.”

sea cruise market

The newbuild has an LOA of 141 metres, a beam of 16.8 metres, and a maximum draught of three metres. With the ability to sail in wave heights of up to three metres as well as in areas with thin surface ice, the vessel can easily navigate under a broad range of sailing conditions typical in waterways that include the Volga and Don Rivers and even the more open waters of the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Sea of Azov.

Two heavy fuel oil-powered engines that each produce 1,200 kW drive the two Schottel fixed-pitch rudder propellers (FPRPs) to deliver a speed of 12 knots and an endurance of 15 days. MEB added that increased manoeuvrability can be achieved when making wide-angle turns using the FPRPs. This makes it easier to operate the ship in narrow inland waterways wherein manoeuvring at speed would be impractical due to the reduced effectiveness of the rudders.

sea cruise market

As it is intended to operate as a cruise ship for both river and open sea sailings, Mustai Karim presented some challenges to its designers.

“It became clear to us that the river-sea concept will have restrictions on passenger capacity, since the dimensions required for sailing in two differing types of waterways mean there will be limitations to just how much space can be allocated for cabins and other common areas such as restaurants. Also, the number of decks will be dictated by the vessel’s air draught.”

MEB said it was able to overcome these issues through solutions that included CFD modeling and towing tank tests to further optimise hull form as well as reinforcement through thickened steel sheeting in accordance with strength calculations. The result is a vessel that successfully conforms to modern cruise and hotel industry standards with improved comfort and a reasonable selection of modern amenities.

“The sea trials and the first operational sea and river voyages showed us that it is possible to create an effective hull design even with a greater length-to-beam ratio compared to most other passenger vessels,” the designer told Baird Maritime .

sea cruise market

The four-deck Mustai Karim can accommodate 329 guests in 161 cabins in multiple classes as well as 144 crewmembers. The passenger cabins are mainly two-person staterooms with total areas ranging from 17 to 46 square metres each. The only exceptions are 11 suites including one designed specifically for passengers with limited mobility and an owner’s suite.

The onboard amenities consist of two restaurants including one with space for 329 guests, bars with panoramic views, a conference room with seating for 140 people, a wine cellar, a large sun deck, a live entertainment venue with 200 seats, a sports and fitness complex with spa, and a salon/barber shop. Access between the various passenger decks is via two lifts while all onboard spaces have internet connectivity and satellite TV.

sea cruise market

The vessel’s communication and navigation electronics include Transas X- and S-band radars and GPS, a sonar and depth sounder from Skipper, a Sailor satcom, a Jupiter magnetic compass, a Navigat gyrocompass, and a Sperry Marine autopilot. Power for the onboard electrical systems is supplied by three 760ekW diesel generators while a 150ekW generator will be reserved for emergency use.

Like the vessel itself, the onboard array of lifesaving equipment is fully compliant to Russian River Register (RRR) rules. The equipment includes two Palfinger 48-passenger fast rescue boats, 16 life rafts with capacity for 25 people each, and two marine evacuation systems that will enable the occupants to safely abandon ship without having to enter the water.

sea cruise market

“To further improve fire safety,” MEB told Baird Maritime , “the vessel’s interior has been divided into main vertical zones with constructive and thermal barriers and installed detection and automatic sprinkler systems. We also made sure to limit the use of potentially flammable materials.”

The designer also configured the interior spaces so as to provide a passive means of restricting the spread of flames. This lowers the risk of fire reaching the escape routes in the event of an emergency.

Mustai Karim was built for Vodohod in fulfilment of a shipbuilding contract awarded by local conglomerate Mashpromlizing. The vessel is now being operated out of Moscow to destination cities that include Saint Petersburg, Astrakhan, and Rostov-on-Don.

Middle East cruise sector has 'huge' potential despite Red Sea crisis

Speakers at arabian travel market discuss opportunities for growth in region.

The Middle East's cruise sector is lagging behind global competitors as it seeks to navigate the challenging waters of the Red Sea crisis, but industry experts said the region still has major potential for growth.

Major cruise operators have adjusted itineraries or cancelled voyages amid attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels on commercial vessels in the key shipping route.

Dave Goodger, managing director of EMEA Tourism Economics, an Oxford Economics company, said deployment to the Red Sea is down on last year and occupancy is a bit lower, but that the industry was “very resilient”.

“There is this perception of risk and [tourism is] driven by perceptions,” Mr Goodger said during a panel discussion at the Arabian Travel Market exhibition in Dubai, which ends on Thursday.

“When there are adverse effects, people tend to stay away, but travellers come back.

“There is an impact today, but that's not to say it'll impact the industry tomorrow.”

'We are very confident'

While cruise travel is outpacing wider demand for international travel around the world, with the exception of Asia, the Middle East's recovery is slower, according to Tourism Economics's latest report.

Whereas cruise occupancy is at 111 per cent in the Caribbean, for example, and 107 per cent in the Mediterranean, it's at 90 per cent in the Middle East and Africa, it found.

Saudi Arabia's Aroya Cruises is ready to set sail in December. Photo: Aroya Cruises

The longer-run potential is clear for the region, however, once safe passage through the Suez Canal is possible, the report added.

Turky Kari, executive director of marketing and corporate communications at Saudi Arabia's Aroya Cruises, said once its first ship sets sail in December, it will go through the Red Sea.

“We are very confident and all Red Sea authorities and the Saudi government support this 100 per cent,” he said.

Aroya comes under the management of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund’s cruise company, Cruise Saudi. It plans to launch three cruise ships within 10 years, as well as add seven new ports by 2030 and reach 1.3 million passengers per year.

Its first cruises will last three nights, departing from Jeddah and then spending a day at sea followed by a private island along the Red Sea coast. A seven-night cruise will follow in January, taking in Jeddah, Ain Sokhna and Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, and Aqaba, Jordan. Aroya also has plans to cruise across the Gulf and the Mediterranean.

A stronger GCC cruise sector

The potential within the region's cruise sector is “huge”, said Saud Hareb Almheiri, cruise tourism and yachting lead at Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism. “But people in the region need to be more aware that they can cruise in our own backyard. They don't need to fly six hours to the Med or 15 hours to the Caribbean.”

This is why Cruise Arabian Alliance was set up in March, to foster co-operation in the region as the countries work together to maintain service levels and educate the market.

“We're strong, but we're stronger together,” said Mr Almheiri.

Lakshmi Durai, chief executive of Middle East cruise agency CruiseExplore, said the more cruise liners there are in the region, the better for the sector. “One cruise line is not competitive to another cruise line,” she said. “There is a huge number of people who take land vacations every year from here. Instead of a staycation, why not a cruisecation?

“Cruises are very easy to sell. They're all inclusive, it's one vacation to see multiple locations, there are no flight costs. Cruising in the Gulf is a fantastic winter vacation.”

Partnerships and packages are key

Opportunities extend beyond regular holidays, added Mr Kari, who said Cruise Saudi is also looking at developing wedding packages.

Mr Almheiri believes events at sea is another area for growth. “The awareness is not there at the moment, but I believe strongly it'll happen in the near future,” he said. “Holding events at sea will be something different, maybe for smaller cruise ships rather than the larger ships.”

International cruise liners have also shown interest in extending the season through the summer, added Mr Almheiri.

Mr Goodger's findings showed greater demand for longer cruises, but also strong demand for shorter cruises. “The key is to offer a lot of different packages to cater to different ways people can travel,” he said.

“People also spend a night in a destination before or after they cruise, so land tourism can complement, destination benefits can support the port destination by having that infrastructure.”

Partnerships are key, agreed Mr Almheiri. “There has been more happening in this ecosystem in the past year and a half spurred by demand and raised interest,” he said.

This includes Emirates' new two-year partnership with MSC Cruises, which allows passengers to book fly-cruise holiday packages that include return flights from 21 airports across Europe and South America. The agreement was made on Wednesday at Arabian Travel Market.

Ultimately, the future of the industry is bright, Mr Goodger said. “There are two words I use in general when focusing on travel as a whole, with a lot of economic disruptions, and that's cautious optimism,” he said. “But when talking about cruising, it's optimism.”

Stock Market Crash Warning: Don’t Get Caught Holding These 3 Cruise Stocks

T he cruise industry has long been a popular choice for travelers seeking a unique and luxurious vacation experience. However, behind the glitz and glamor, the industry has been grappling with several inherent weaknesses. Those have left the sector particularly vulnerable to economic downturns and unforeseen crises. These susceptibilities have been brought to the forefront in recent years, causing investors to question the long-term viability of these cruise stocks to avoid.

One of the most significant weaknesses of the cruise industry is its heavy reliance on discretionary spending. Unlike essential goods and services, cruises are often seen as a luxury. Some consumers easily forego such treats during times of financial uncertainty, such as a stock market crash. Also, high interest rate environment and inflationary pressures have battered these cruise stocks to avoid.

However, travelers are focusing on experiences and are willing to pay for them. The result is record bookings and stronger pricing power for the cruise lines industry overall.

So, while it’s still full steam ahead, a few companies are struggling with other macro headwinds. Let’s examine three such stocks to avoid.

Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL)

Royal Caribbean Cruises (NYSE: RCL ) has demonstrated improvement in its financial results. However, the company is grappling with a substantial debt burden. Notably, it has around $20 million in cash and $21 billion in debt.

However, RCL is projecting strong performance for 2024, having raised its guidance due to robust demand. The company expects adjusted earnings per share ( EPS ) to fall between $9.90 and $10.10. This follows a notable debt reduction in 2023, when RCL paid off approximately $4 billion, aiming to reach investment grade metrics.

For 2024, RCL has scheduled significant capital expenditures totaling around $3.3 billion. This price tag was primarily for its new ship orders, including the Utopia of the Seas and Silver Ray . Also, the company anticipates a capacity increase of 8.5% compared to 2023.

Despite its positive outlook, its current and quick ratios stand at 0.19 and 0.09, making it a highly leveraged company. Therefore, it holds a risky position in the event of a broad sell-off in the indices, as investors typically undergo a flight to safety and away from these speculative investments.

OneSpaWorld Holdings (OSW)

OneSpaWorld Holdings (NASDAQ: OSW ) provides health and wellness products aboard cruise ships. But the sailing line has experienced fluctuations in its stock performance. And, OSW could be substantially impacted if a stock market crash comes materializes.

Still, OSW has raised its revenue guidance for 2024 to $860 to $880 million, reflecting a positive start to the year. The company reported a significant improvement in Q1 of 2024. Revenues increased to $211.2 million, a 16% rise from the previous year. Also, net income reached $21.2 million, turning around from a loss of $15.9 million year-over-year ( YOY ).

But, the situation becomes dicey because OSW’s valuation is essentially hinged on the assumption of no broader markets’ correction and its continued incredible earnings growth run.

Yet, OSW trades at 55 times earnings, and its forward P/E is 18 times earnings. So although times are certainly good for OSW, its high P/E makes its stock price vulnerable to being sold off. This is specially true if the broader macro backdrop deteriorates in the face of higher for longer interest rates and stubborn inflation.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH)

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NYSE: NCLH ) is another major player facing similar challenges. Despite some positive earnings, the overall volatility in the cruise sector and potential regulatory changes post-pandemic add a layer of investment risk in addition to the market risks it faces.

Additionally, NCLH is significantly leveraged, but to a lesser degree than RCL. Its liquidity ratios for its current and quick measures are 0.24 and 0.13, respectively. So this adds a dimension of financial risk to the equation.

Still, the company reported Q1 revenue of $1.9 billion for the end of 2023, marking a 30.8% increase from the previous year. And projections indicate a strong year ahead. Also, it forecasts an adjusted EPS of almost $1.23. This outlook is supported by a forecasted increase in net yield of approximately 5.5% and an occupancy rate expectation of around 105.1%.

Again, this could make holding NCLH a risky proposition. Clearly, its valuation is propped up via some optimistic assumptions about its fundamentals and the broader market.

Key Takeaways

  • Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world, with 18 passenger-accessible decks, eight different neighborhoods and 2,805 staterooms.
  • Think of Icon of the Seas as an all-in-one adventure vacation contained on a ship. Young families and energetic travelers will enjoy it most.
  • Itineraries originate from Miami , sail to destinations around the Caribbean and include a stop at Royal Caribbean's private island , Perfect Day at CocoCay.

If you have any degree of interest in traveling or cruising, chances are you've heard the buzz around Icon of the Seas. Another record-breaking ship by Royal Caribbean International , Icon of the Seas debuted on Jan. 27, 2024, as the largest cruise ship in the world. It is epic in every sense, featuring 18 cruiser-accessible decks and stretching 1,196 feet from bow to stern.

With greatest-of-all-time soccer player Lionel Messi as the ship's godfather, the Icon of the Seas is truly iconic. Messi brought the entire Inter Miami team along for the opening ceremony and the big reveal of the team's new Royal Caribbean-sponsored jerseys. I was fortunate enough to attend this star-studded ceremony as part of the press preview sailing in the days leading up to the ship's grand debut to the public. It was everything I thought it would be and more, and nobody could have been more appropriate than Messi to send this ship on her maiden voyage.

Boarding a ship of this size can seem overwhelming, but not when you understand the layout. Icon of the Seas is broken up into eight distinct neighborhoods: AquaDome, Central Park, Thrill Island, Chill Island, Royal Promenade, The Hideaway, Suite Neighborhood and Surfside, a neighborhood built for young families looking for nonstop fun and kid-approved eats and treats.

In addition to these public areas, there are 2,805 staterooms spread across 12 decks. Icon of the Seas' capacity maxes out at 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members, but with the plethora of public spaces and variety of things to do and see, you can choose your own adventure without encountering more crowds than you want to.

Icon of the Seas itinerary

During its inaugural 2024-2025 cruising season, Icon of the Seas offers seven-night eastern or western Caribbean adventures from Miami, stopping at a variety of tropical destinations. All sailings include a stop at Royal Caribbean's award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, in the Bahamas . Other destinations include Basseterre, St. Kitts & Nevis ; Roatan, Honduras; and Cozumel, Mexico .

During the 2025-2026 cruising season, new destinations will include Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic ; San Juan, Puerto Rico ; Labadee, Haiti; Costa Maya, Mexico; and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas (part of the U.S. Virgin Islands ). All sailings will originate from Miami.

No matter your Icon of the Seas itinerary, you'll visit beautiful places – but you can expect to feel torn about spending any time off the ship, because it's just that jampacked with things to do.

Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Who should sail on Icon of the Seas?

Icon of the Seas appeals not so much to a demographic as to a psychographic; you're going to need to be someone who likes to live life in all caps. Royal Caribbean set out to create "the world's best vacation" contained on a ship, so Icon of the Seas is for anyone who would enjoy the combination of a beach trip, a resort stay, a water park adventure and island-hopping.

Fun-loving travelers and families with kids of varying ages will do best on this ship; it feels a little bit like Disney World with over-the-top everything and a truly massive sprawl. Older travelers who prefer a more quiet, refined experience may want to opt for a less kid-friendly ship. Still, even couples without children will find plenty of fun adult-friendly things to do and romantic places to tuck in.

The Royal Promenade can be quite loud and buzzy, but simply relocating to another onboard neighborhood can completely shift the vibe. Also, keep in mind that the ship really is huge, and walking from end to end can be a hike, so those with limited mobility or endurance might want to look into a smaller ship.

Icon of the Seas prices are high in its opening season, but cruisers with big dreams and small budgets can expect rates to drop by the time the next ship in the series debuts.

The stateroom

With a ship this overstimulating, it's imperative that your stateroom is a haven. Luckily, Icon of the Seas offers peaceful rooms, many of which feature ocean or Central Park neighborhood views. Cruise ship accommodations are stereotypically compact – even cramped – but the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows in Icon of the Seas' cabins (with the exception of the windowless interior rooms) lend an airy, open feel. The cabin layouts are also optimized to provide the maximum amount of storage, floor space and comfort.

Stateroom decor is mildly nautical- and tropical-themed, with calming hues that mimic the scenery outside your window (think blues, beiges and whites). High-tech elements include smart TVs, LED mirrors and the ability to control many aspects of your room from an app.

My husband and I stayed in an Ocean View Large Balcony Stateroom, a 204-square-foot refuge from the hustle and bustle of the ship (the balcony adds another 65 to 70 square feet). This room type can sleep up to four people with a sofa bed for one or two; the room also features twin beds that convert to a king bed for couples.

My husband is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, and we were comfortable in our room, even though our quarters included a large bed, a bathroom, a sofa and a desk. We loved sitting on our private balcony and watching the deep blues of the Atlantic Ocean flow by.

If money is no object, the Ultimate Family Townhouse – an over-the-top eight-guest, three-story pad with a private whirlpool on the balcony, three bathrooms, a slide that connects the second and main levels, an in-suite cinema, a dining room and a kitchenette – looks epic. But keep in mind, it costs nearly $100,000 for the week.

The Sunset Corner Suites (about one-fifth of the cost of the Ultimate Family Townhouse, but still expensive) are also pretty sweet, with a wraparound balcony and a bed facing the sea.

Luckily, not all rooms break the bank; with four main stateroom categories (suite, balcony, ocean view and inside) and 28 subcategories, there's something for everyone.

Best amenities on Icon of the Seas

It's almost impossible to run out of things to do aboard Icon of the Seas.

For thrill-seekers, the largest water park at sea – Category 6 – features the Frightening Bolt (the tallest waterslide on a ship) and the Pressure Drop (the first open freefall waterslide on a cruise vessel).

If you've tired of the seven swimming pools, six waterslides, laser tag, mini-golf, rock climbing wall, escape room, sports courts, outdoor decks, theater, spa and all-day programming, simply take a stroll down the Royal Promenade for Las Vegas -style people-watching. The Royal Promenade has 15 restaurants, bars and lounges, as well as a Starbucks that seems to have a line no matter what time you go. The neighborhood feels a bit like a shopping mall … if a shopping mall had floor-to-ceiling ocean views made possible by the world's largest kinetic art sculpture.

The Pearl, a feat of engineering, is one of the most unique aspects of the ship's design. This art piece is actually a load-bearing structure supporting three decks, but it looks and feels like an interactive art experience designed solely for the enjoyment of guests. The multisensory immersive structure has 3,000 kinetic panels and moody ever-changing lighting. It is one of the first things guests will see when they walk on board, as it stretches from the Royal Promenade up to Central Park.

My husband and I spent most of our time at the FlowRider surf simulator – his favorite amenity – but we made sure to leave time for Taylor Swift trivia at Spotlight Karaoke and the superhuman stunts of the Aqua Theater show, a must on any Icon of the Seas voyage. The ship even has a massive ice arena called Absolute Zero for ice skating (the 20-minute sessions are complimentary) and impressive shows.

We also loved lounging in The Overlook Bar & Pods, an area at the very front of the ship (behind the AquaDome) that features two levels of floor-to-ceiling wraparound windows. It felt airy and open, which can't be said about many cruise ship interiors.

Best dining venues on Icon of the Seas

There are more dining options aboard Icon of the Seas than you can fit in on a seven-night cruise – but you can give it the old college try. Thirteen of the dining venues are complimentary, while 14 are specialty restaurants (which cost extra; fees vary). There are also 18 bars and lounges.

The best meal we experienced on the ship was at the Chops Grille specialty eatery. When we spotted Royal Caribbean CEO Jason Liberty and a group of bigwigs at a table next to us, we knew we were in the right place. We loved sitting outside and enjoying the breezes of Central Park while we chowed down, but you can eat indoors for an elegant steakhouse experience and a view of the open kitchen and butcher's display, which shows off specialty cuts like high-grade wagyu and bone-in tomahawks.

While I'd never turn down a swanky steak dinner, grabbing quick poolside bites at El Loco Fresh and indulging in some food hall-style grazing at AquaDome Market were equally enjoyable. We also had no complaints eating several meals at Windjammer, the classic complimentary cruise ship buffet.

Even though we don't have children, we stopped into Surfside Bites for a very kid-friendly meal, complete with soft serve ice cream cones from Sprinkles (because no cruise is complete without soft serve). We didn't try anything from the open-air, lemonade stand-inspired Lemon Post bar, but its menu of cocktails and mocktails looked delicious.

And since you're on vacation, be sure to check out the milkshake bar Desserted, where the sugary creations are as photo-worthy as they are decadent. They're worth the upcharge.

Best excursions on Icon of the Seas

Depending on what's on your Icon of the Seas itinerary, you may be able to book activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, tropical jungle adventures, visits to Mayan ruins, volcano hikes, rainforest zip lining, relaxing beach days or cultural immersion tours.

Note that Royal Caribbean features the same options on many of its other Caribbean cruises; none of the excursions on offer are exclusive to Icon of the Seas.

Because our press preview sailing only visited Perfect Day at CocoCay, we did not experience any of the shore excursions. Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas was plenty of fun, even though we didn't plan anything in advance.

If we had made plans, we would have liked to check out the Up, Up and Away tethered hot air balloon, which wasn't running that day, and the overwater cabanas at Coco Beach Club, which were all booked. Thrill Waterpark (which features the tallest waterslide in North America), Oasis Lagoon (the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean) and the adults-only Hideaway Beach are other highlights of Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas.

Overall impressions of Icon of the Seas

Royal Caribbean seems to be focused on superlatives. It has the biggest, best, tallest, largest and most of everything – especially when it comes to Icon of the Seas. If you like jampacked, adventurous vacations that squeeze a lot of adventure and relaxation into one memorable week, Icon of the Seas is probably for you.

While I love seeing Royal Caribbean push the limits of what cruises can be, the ship may almost be too big for some. It's an all-out Vegas-esque vessel that feels more like a floating city; you will probably forget (more than once) that you're not on dry land.

That's not necessarily a bad thing – if Icon of the Seas looks fun to you, it probably will be – but my husband and I tend to gravitate more toward authentic, immersive, on-the-ground cultural experiences when we travel. While Icon of the Seas is a lot of things, it's not that. We had a fantastic time and have already started planning a future Royal Caribbean cruise with a group of friends and family, but we also sympathize with the anticruisers of the world. Vacationing does not a traveler make.

Still, the shows are entertaining, the service is attentive, the music is jamming, and the architecture and design are incredibly impressive. I have no real complaints and suspect that most cruisers will have the time of their lives on Icon of the Seas – exactly as the minds at Royal Caribbean envisioned when they dreamed up this iconic ship.

Experience Luxury at Every Turn on a Russia Cruise

Russia is a vast, breathtaking country known for resplendent cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, where world-class art, unique architecture, and rich history await. Beyond its biggest cities, however, there are remote villages and fishing towns that thrive despite a menacing climate, making Russia home to a wilderness more beautiful than you could possibly imagine.

Once the capital of imperial Russia, today St. Petersburg is a creative hub full of art, culture, and cherished institutions just waiting to be explored on a Russia cruise. From breathtaking ballet and opera centers to ornate palaces and cathedrals, the City of Tsars still feels every bit the royal city it once was. Get to know another side of Russia in Petropavlovsk, a port town where 29 active volcanoes and the rugged Kamchatka Peninsula contrasts with its snow-capped mountains and inviting thermal hot springs.

With the safety of our guests and crew always our top priority, we are removing St. Petersburg, Russia from upcoming itineraries in 2022, due to the current situation in Ukraine. Our thoughts are with all who are impacted by this conflict.

Russia Cruise Highlights

'Gay summer camp': How cruises create space for LGBTQ+ travelers at sea

sea cruise market

As Sharon Moss' cruise vacation came to an end, the 42-year-old went big before going home.

Moss, who is fine with any pronoun but mostly uses they/them, spent the last day of February sailing to the Caribbean on Celebrity Cruises' Reflection ship dancing in the pool with their girlfriend. Being surrounded by fellow guests decked out in feather boas, shower curtains and lopsided wigs – the party's theme was "She's a Mess" – Moss felt there was something different about the trip.

The voyage was Moss' first trip with theLGBTQ travel company VACAYA and their first cruise since sailing with Disney Cruise Line as a child.

"People were waving at us, and we were like the stars of our little dance pool. It was just freeing and fun, and not something that you get to necessarily feel like you can do," Moss said. "You can't pop over to your local YMCA and be like, 'Can I have a dance party in the pool?'"

Before booking the sailing, the retired professional weightlifter said many mainstream cruises seemed more geared toward heteronormative families and they hadn't considered booking one. But in the wake of the pandemic, the couple craved a relaxing vacation. Both jumped at a chance for Moss' girlfriend to be somewhere "culturally entirely queer"because she had not had as much experience socializing in LGBTQ+ spaces.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

For some LGBTQ+ travelers, gay cruises have offered a kind of haven on the seas. While early cruises catered primarily to gay men and lesbians, the market has grown in recent years, with more options aimed at a more diverse array of queer travelers.

'We have to be on guard a lot': Why safety comes first for so many LGBTQ travelers

When did LGBTQ+ cruises start?

Cruise operators that catered to gay and lesbian passengers began sailing in the '80s and '90s, according to a  timeline from IGLTA .

"When it first started, it was somewhat underground and they were definitely more in the charter side of things ... where people could be together with members of their community and get away and be free from families or work, you know, be out, because the world was so different in the '80s," John Tanzella, president and CEO of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, said.

The sailings were a tougher sell back then, though."It was probably really hard to get a cruise line to take a gay group (in the early days)," Tanzella said.

In some cases, ships carrying LGBTQ+ passengers were turned away from ports, he added. By contrast, today, cruise lines are "going after the market," and destinations court those sailings and their loyal customer base. "You know, a port city might host a reception the night before the cruise departs, like going that extra mile to welcome the cruisers," Tanzella said. In addition to chartering entire ships, IGLTA has members that host groups on nonspecialty sailings too.

'I just want to see more of us': The importance of seeing people like you while traveling

Jon Fenwick went on his first gay cruise in 2008 with Atlantis Events after some friends talked him into it. The 46-year-old enjoyed the trip so much that he made it a tradition of it, taking at least one LGBTQ+ cruise annually most years since. And he isn't the only one.

"You definitely see a lot of the same faces from trip to trip, and a lot of people would go on the same ones every year just to have a reunion, or sometimes we call it gay summer camp," said Fenwick, a government information technology specialist based in Arlington, Virginia.

The options were also more limited and siloed, with cruises aimed primarily at gay men or lesbians, he added. Over the past decade or so, though, the industry has made an increased effort be inclusive, and somenew cruise operators targeting a diverse clientele have entered the market.

Fenwick has met other gay passengers on mainstream cruises but said the experience isn't the same, "You definitely don't have the (same) freedom to be yourself on a regular cruise."

'We are the majority'

VACAYA is among those new companies catering to a diverse audience, with an emphasis on the LGBTQ+ community, as well as straight allies. The company, which also offers land-based vacations, launched its first trips in 2019.

"If you believe love is love, then you belong on a VACAYA vacation," said Patrick Gunn, the company's co-founder and CMO. The company has worked with Celebrity, Ponant, Emerald Cruises and others.

Those principles of inclusion guide what guests experience during their trip. VACAYA recently began giving out pronoun pins to help guests and staff use each other's preferred pronouns (the company also provides diversity and inclusion training to resort and cruise line partners).

The company also offers a wide range of programming. In addition to drag shows and pool parties, the VACAYA has also held a makeup seminar geared particularly toward nonbinary and transgender passengers.

"We believe in balance," Gunn said. "So, we love a good party, don't get me wrong, but we also love to wake up and go into port the next day."

On a March cruise that visited Panama, Colombia and more, passenger ages ranged from 21 to 91, according to co-founder and CEO Randle Roper. The company's clientele is predominantly gay men, but 20% of the sailing's guests were women.

Margaret Riedling, who joined VACAYA for the March sailing with her wife, found it refreshing. The 59-year-old had not taken an LGBTQ+ cruise since she was in her 20s.

"We have gay, straight, queer friends in our real lives," said Riedling, who lives in Spokane, Washington, and Palm Springs, California. "Why wouldn't we have them in our vacation life?"

Brand g Vacations, which was founded in 2011, also caters to a range of queer travelers, along with straight allies. The company offers river cruising, small-ship ocean cruises and land-based tours, according to its website.

That doesn't mean longer-running operators aren't inclusive. Among those, Atlantis is particularly popular among gay men but welcomes women, transgender and nonbinary guests, and "even straight parents," as well, CEO Rich Campbell said in an email.

And while Olivia Travel's guests primarily identify as cisgender lesbians and queer women, nonbinary and transgender guests have always been welcome, according to VP of marketing Autumn Nazarian.

For Roper's part, he said the kinds of sailings VACAYA aims to offer shift the dynamic LGBTQ+ people experience elsewhere, even if only for a week or two at a time.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

A brand-new nude cruise will be launching in 2025 from Miami

The trip has been marketed as ‘an an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise’

Liv Kelly

Some of us opt to explore the world by foot , car or train , but plenty of travellers are partial to bobbing between destinations aboard a cruise. And there are loads to choose from, from pickleball or Star Trek-themed voyages to trips based around murder mysteries, Irish music or Taylor Swift .

But would you ever board a nude cruise? Well, now’s your chance. Norwegian Cruise Line have paired up with nudist travel company Bare Necessities to launch a trip described as ‘an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise’, according to the Independent .

The cruise, which will depart from Miami  on February 3, 2025 will journey around destinations including the Bahamas , St Lucia  and Puerto Rico , before returning on February 14.

While that’s already a rather heavenly itinerary, the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship also has plenty on board to keep you entertained while you’re letting it all hang loose. There’s open deck space, 14 restaurants and 14 bars, a large buffet area, a casino, spa and several nightlife options.

But don’t disrobe just yet – there are a few rules to bear in mind before you wander the starboard starkers. Cruise rules apparently require passengers to be clothed during the Captain’s reception and introduction, at all times in the main and speciality dining rooms and while docked in port.

You’ve also gotta put a towel down before perching in the stateroom, pool deck, and buffet area, and you can’t be nude in front of other ships in port, and absolutely no ‘fondling or inappropriate touching’.

Totally horrified or irresistibly intrigued? Prices start at $2,000 (£1,592, €1,862) for a two-person cabin, but soar up to $33,155 (£26,400, €29,590) for a three-person ‘garden villa’. You can have a look at the Bare Necessities website here .

Did you see that there could be an underwater tunnel linking Europe and Africa by 2030 ?

Plus: A Japanese town is building a wall to block tourists from seeing a popular Mount Fuji view .
