RTE Reeling in the Years viewers are all talking about one moment as the iconic Teresa Mannion clip resurfaces on our screens.

Since 2015, people have been begging Mannion to say those four famous words: “Don’t make unnecessary journeys!”

The video clip of her rain-drenched, wind-whipped Storm Desmond report went viral six years ago and Mannion suddenly became an internet meme.

Though Teresa wasn't even sure if people could hear her back in the studio, she ploughed through the report, all the while clinging desperately to her hood in County Galway.

Despite the attention on social media, the mother of two wasn't trolled and she became an instant legend instead.

Here’s what Twitter users had to say about the clip returning to our televisions:

A user said: “Teresa a solid six years ahead of the plan from Government for COVID with the 'unnecessary journeys' advice”

Another said: “How many times do you think poor ould Teresa Mannion has "don't make unnecessary journeys!" shouted at her on a daily basis?”

A third person tweeted: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the genius at RTÉ who put in that “don’t make unnecessary journeys” speech. God bless St Teresa Mannion.”

Someone else said: “I'm shook to realise 'unnecessary journeys' was six years ago! Defo feels like it was yesterday.”

Whilst other users praised the RTE sensation:

“Teresa ya absolute legend, what a start!!!!”

“Lmao Teresa Mannion bless her.”

“RTE will never let her live that moment down.”

“Teresa Mannion, absolute classic.”

“Teresa Mannion at Salthill opening...... this show just gets it.”

'Don't make unnecessary journeys' meme resurfaces as Storm Eunice hits the UK

'Don't make unnecessary journeys' meme resurfaces as Storm Eunice hits the UK

As Storm Eunice batters the UK today, the Met Office has issued red weather warnings across the South of England and urged people to stay indoors.

Of course with the news coverage of the storm , we will inevitably see poor news reporters out on the front lines battling the treacherous conditions to provide updates on the weather - and this has reminded people of a classic weather meme.

Irish journalist Teresa Mannion knows all too well the struggle of giving a live news report in extreme wind and rain after a clip of her coverage of Storm Desmond when viral back in 2015 which battered Ireland's west coast of Galway where she was reporting from in Salthill.

In the clip, the RTE News reporter is drenched while struggling to stand still against the strong winds and can be seen holding her earpiece and clutching her microphone in place as she dramatically shouts her latest updates, which delivered the iconic quote:

"Don’t make unnecessary journeys, don’t take risks on treacherous roads.”

As a result of becoming a viral sensation, several hilarious parodies and remixes of the video were created to solidify its meme status

So given the similarly awful weather that's occurring right now, it's a warning message that certainly resonates and this has led to the meme resurfacing as people on social media reshare the classic clip.

Mannion previously revealed what it was like to become an overnight viral sensation, she told RSVP Magazine : "It was absolutely treacherous and I didn’t know that I was shouting as loudly as I was because I was in my own little bubble.

"The weather intensified as the report continued, but I couldn’t stop because we were live and the rest is history," she said.

"Within 48 hours the report had gone all around the world, there were dances remixes, memes and so many offspins created after the bulletin. I totally embraced it and took it on-board, there was very little negativity afterwards and I wasn’t trolled online."

Elsewhere, Ireland has also felt the wrath of Storm Eunice with tens of thousands of homes currently without power in the south of the country and as a result, it has caused schools and colleges across the Republic to close today (February 18).

An Irish reporter's battered plea for viewers to stay inside during a major storm struck a chord with many online, who have given her the full remix treatment and have placed her to many (fictional) crises.

While being pelted with rain, Teresa Mannion reported live for Raidió Teilifís Éireann during Storm Desmond in coastal Galway, Ireland. She explained safety precautions amidst the howling winds and heavy rain on the national evening newscast.

She started the live report with a measured tone, but, donning a hat and raincoat, she yelled into the microphone as the anchor asked her more questions about the scene.

"Don't make unnecessary journeys," she shouted dramatically into a camera that was swaying from the wind. "Don't take risks on treacherous roads."

In the same voice, she added that people had been spotted swimming in the sea.

"Galway city council say their actions are idiotic," Mannion said. "It is unacceptable and unforgivable to put the lives in the rescue services at danger as well."

The anchor then said "thank you" and the newscast cut to a much calmer scene at Dublin airport.

People were quickly astonished with the Dec. 5 report, both with the severity of the storm and the drama Mannion conveyed.

The internet’s take on Teresa Mannion: what you need to know

Social media responds to the rté journalist’s dramatic storm desmond weather report.

A year ago today, RTE journalist Teresa Mannion went viral on social media following her live report on Storm Desmond for RTE News. Video: RTE

Teresa Mannion's performance during this weekend's Storm Desmond weather report has earned her instant social media praise and fame.

Clutching her mic amid pouring rain and with an air of drama, she told viewers: “Don’t make unnecessary journeys, don’t take risks on treacherous roads.”

The report has been shared thousands of times, as have various screenshots and a mountain of parodies, memes and one fairly catchy remix.

The report picked up international attention, with the Independent in the UK running the story on Monday morning.

People have also called for the next storm to be named after the reporter (there's an online petition you can sign here ). Unfortunately, the next storm will be called Eva, according to the list voted for by the public.

#StormTeresa will likely not materialise further down the alphabetical list either, as Storm Tegan takes the entry for the letter "T".

unnecessary journeys

Where were you when Teresa was breaking the internet?

It was 5 December 2015, and RTE News cut to their intrepid reporter out in the wilds of “the west and the north west” of the country as it was battered by some insane weather courtesy of Storm Desmond.

This brought us into 120 seconds of some the greatest modern television anyone, anywhere, has ever seen.

The particular highlights include, but are in no way limited to:

  • “This is all about the rain.”
  • “Stay away from that stretch of motorway! Its treacherous!”
  • The random cut-away to a man standing silently, before then cutting back to Teresa.
  • “Don’t take risks on treacherous roads!”
  • “And don’t swim in the sea!”
  • When speaking of people who actually did swim in the sea – “Galway council say their actions are … idiotic!”
  • How exactly the anchor-woman managed to keep a straight face while talking to Teresa is beyond us.

And, of course,

  • “DON’T MAKE UNNECESSARY JOURNEYS!”

Obviously, Mannion went on to become a bit of a phenomenon, with her interview getting the YouTube remix treatment, which also went viral, and she went on to become a contestant in Ireland’s 2017 edition of Dancing With The Stars.

In recent weeks, there has been a bit of a trend on Twitter, with people asking “Name a bitch badder than Taylor Swift”.

We can go one better: “Name a woman more iconic than Teresa May.”

We’ll help you out. There isn’t one.

Teresa Mannion became an overnight internet sensation after capturing the hearts of the nation during a news report in the middle of Storm Desmond back in 2015.

The weather intensified while she was live on RTÉ and her phrase "Don't make unnecessary journeys" became a global hit.

The news reporter revealed that she didn't know she was shouting so loudly and she had to keep going with the report because it was live television.

But despite the attention on social media, the mother of two wasn't trolled and she became an instant legend instead.

Explaining what happened that night, Teresa said: "I ended up doing a report on the Salthill prom in the middle of Storm Desmond, the technology had been updated to cope with that sort of level of wind and rain, and otherwise we would not have been able to have been so close to the Atlantic Ocean for a live news report because the pictures would have broken up."

Teresa previously told RSVP Magazine: "It was absolutely treacherous and I didn’t know that I was shouting as loudly as I was because I was in my own little bubble.

"The weather intensified as the report continued, but I couldn’t stop because we were live and the rest is history.

"Within 48 hours the report had gone all around the world, there were dances remixes, memes and so many offspins created after the bulletin. I totally embraced it and took it on-board, there was very little negativity afterwards and I wasn’t trolled online.

"In fact, I was given legendary status which is very funny in my mind. On a serious note, I started working with the Road Safety Authority telling motorists how drive safely in hail, rain or snow.

"Ultimately, that is how I ended up on Dancing with the Stars because I became a little more high profile."

unnecessary journeys

The editor of the RTÉ news show told her that she was trending number one on Twitter in Ireland by the end of the bulletin.

She said: "It was a short Sunday evening report so that would have been 10 or 15 minutes after transmission. From there, Buzzfeed and various other entertainment websites started to pick up on the story and it ended up on the front of the London Independent the next day.

"It was on broadsheet, tabloid and social media- it was getting traction from everywhere. It had gone around the world in 48 hours and I got 6,000 Twitter followers in two days, my phone kept on pumping. Ariana Grande and her dancers posted it on Snapchat and it was constantly being picked up.

"The Ellen DeGeneres Show Skyped me a few times and they talked about bringing me over to the states to talk about it, but it was so close to Christmas so it didn’t happen.

"The senior news editor of CNN got in touch and they did a report on it. I was doing back to back media interviews both home and abroad."

Does any particular moment stand out for her? "I was at home at 11pm one night and I was doing Good Morning Australia.

"I was in my own bubble questioning had I really gone live on breakfast television in Sydney, it was very strange. I was presenting a prize and the National Student Media Awards.

"It was very serious and everyone there wanted to work in the media, and there were a few journalists there to give a speech.

"They played the remix of the report when I got on stage and everyone was dancing on the tables. Suddenly, the whole room turned into a big celebration of the video. It was a moment in time and it will never be repeated again."

Sharon Ni Bheolain is a journalist on RTE

That massive TV moment allowed her to inject a little more diversity into her career.

Teresa said: "For sure, I am always being asked to take on new projects. Magazines and newspapers have visited my home in Galway and I have been on various chat shows. Although I am in a new space now, my day job is still very important and it is what I do best."

Teresa also went on to appear on the first series of Dancing with the Stars back in 2017 where she was partnered with John Nolan.

She said: "When DWTS was a runner I was approached by Shinawil productions and RTE was very happy for me the get involved. I was out of my comfort zone because I never had a single dance lesson in my life and I thought I was mad.

"I weighed it up and thought about it before thinking 'Hey, life is short'. I continued to do my day job with a lot of flexibility and generosity from the newsroom and I started to work out of Dublin instead of Galway.

"I stayed in the show for eight weeks and I made great friends."

unnecessary journeys

But Teresa found it hard to cope with the stress of balancing reality TV with life in the newsroom.

She said: "Sometimes I didn’t, I started to think that my life was going slowly bonkers. I was commuting between Galway and Dublin, balancing my day job, trying to do supermarket shops and making sure that my sons were okay.

"Everything was going around like a merry-go-round and it was tough to keep all of the balls in the air. It is an intensive bubble and it really takes over your life."

‘Don’t take risks’ — Met Eireann goes full Teresa Mannion in snow warnings

unnecessary journeys

There were strong reminders from Met Éireann on Thursday night of Teresa Mannion’s famous warning to people not to take unnecessary journeys in bad weather. Clips of the RTÉ news reporter went viral after she braved the wind and rain of Storm Desmond in December 2015.

Soaked through and windblown, Ms Mannion begged viewers: ‘Don’t make unnecessary journeys, don’t take risks on treacherous roads and don’t swim in the sea.’

Today's top videos

Story continues below.

On Thursday, Gerry Murphy of Met Éireann said: ‘It will be a day of not having to travel unless you absolutely have to.’

Limerick City and County Council and Carlow County Council also chimed in and advised people not to make unnecessary journeys.

Ms Mannion’s warnings triggered a stream of internet memes.

The reporter later revealed that she didn’t know she was shouting so loudly and she had to keep going because it was live television.

She said: ‘I ended up doing a report on the Salthill prom in the middle of Storm Desmond. The technology had been updated to cope with that sort of level of wind and rain, and otherwise, we would not have been able to have been so close to the Atlantic Ocean for a live news report because the pictures would have broken up.’

Ms Mannion said: ‘Within 48 hours the report had gone all around the world.

There were dances remixes, memes and so many off-spins created after the bulletin. Ultimately, that is how I ended up on Dancing With The Stars because I became a little more high-profile.’

Thunder and spot flooding on way as Met Eireann issues warning

Met éireann issues unsettled forecast for weekend but good news is on the way, slap on the sunscreen as today will be the hottest day of the year so far, must read news.

STORM DESMOND HAS been memorable for many reasons – like the person transporting a couch during the worst of it - but there has only been one star.

And that was RTÉ reporter Teresa Mannion  and her epic weather report.

So Irish Celtic/Electronic group Super Céilí have obviously made a dance remix of it – and it’s an absolute tune: https://www.facebook.com/superceili/videos/844747155643432/

Sharing Media Offline At transmediale’s 36th Edition

By aoife donnellan // feb. 14, 2023.

The 36th edition of transmediale was the first full version of the festival to be held since 2020. Titled ‘a model, a map, a fiction,’ the five-day programme aimed to investigate the effect of scale on socio-political conditions through artistic intervention, academic discourse and conversation. Using scale as both a method and topic, the festival prioritised alternative discussion formats, including lecture performances, the exhibition of demos and film screenings.

Artistic director Nora O Murchú cites the 2022 tour of a hologram of Queen Elizabeth II as one of the inspirations for this year’s theme. The hologram was physically transported around the UK in an effort to reignite enthusiasm for national identity. This event contributed to O Murchú’s consideration of the effects of image-making technologies on the understanding and processing of information. The scalar relationship between images and information changes objects, both physically and ideologically. This year’s transmediale posited that this rearrangement of information, alongside the instrumentalisation of scale, affects how reality is perceived.

The exhibition element of the festival was divided into two parts: ‘Out of Scale’ and artistic interventions at the main festival site, Akademie der Künst (AdK). At AdK, installed works negotiated with the dim, brutalist space. Green neon lights covered by chrome silver streamers bordered the staircase and silver strips of material were wedged between the stonework. Following the pale blue carpet, audiences could find works installed around corners, along windows and under staircases. Downstairs, six works were exhibited, each considering the possible uses of the collection and reconfiguration of data. Among them was Evan Roth’s ‘Skyscapes’ (2023), a video work on counter-cartography that wrestles with representing curved surfaces on flat planes. Employing mapping algorithms from 150 AD to create a representation of the sky near his home, Roth highlights the implicit reliance of perception on scale.

One of the larger works featured at AdK was a video installation, ‘Or So It Seems’ (2023), created through a collaborative exchange between Alan Butler and Simone C Niquille. In the centre of a large room, a 10-meter, curved screen showed two video works, ‘duckrabbit.tv’ (2023) and ‘Unnecessary Journeys’ (2023), which interrupt one another at varied intervals. Dotted around the room were silver chrome helium balloons in the shape of duckrabbit, as well as fans that blew air during ‘Unnecessary Journeys.’

‘duckrabbit.tv’ follows a cartoonish protagonist, duckrabbit, whose shape is both the head of a duck and the body of a rabbit, depending on an individual’s perception of shape. Inspired by philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s theory that shapes appear with meaning in one’s mind, Niquille uses duckrabbit to examine how computational photography and data rendering act as stand-ins for real objects. ‘Unnecessary Journeys,’ created in Unreal Engine, features a weather forecaster in the midst of a raging storm in Yosemite Park. The forecaster is reading the entirety of the novel ‘My First Summer in Sierra’ by John Muir, which takes a total of eight hours. Butler’s work considers the role of Unreal Engine in the rendering of climate disasters, as well as the effects of understanding reality through data. ‘Or So It Seems’ recognises scale materially through its installation, as well as thematically through its investigation of the conflicting narratives of disaster and entertainment, and their potentially related politics. While some elements of the installations at AdK risk confusing the theme of scale with AI technologies, the remit set by the creative team is generous enough to accommodate a multiplicity of meaning.

The second exhibition element, ‘Out of Scale,’ unravelled the theme more directly. Described as a “citywide exhibition,” it utilised the preexisting networks of Berlin, including eBay Kleinanzeigen, U-Bahn stations, Tempelhofer Feld and a selection of Spätis. In 2018, transmediale chose to close their social media accounts because of how it conflicted with their support for distributed communication methods. Five years later, the festival’s commitment to fostering alternative networks of communication continues through the local economy of Berlin. Four works appear for sale on eBay Kleinanzeigen, although they cannot be purchased with money: they are “zu verschenken”.

One such work, entitled ‘EKWE BILÉ – CHAINZ’ (2022), was created by Anna Ehrenstein and Jeanne-Ange Wagne in commemoration of the resistance efforts of political activist Joseph Ekwe Bilé. The work consisted of a portrait of Ekwe Bilé engraved on the tag of a military-style metal necklace, with a quote from the activist on the reverse. In order to arrange to receive these necklaces from Kleinanzeigen, the buyer had to answer the question “what was Bilé’s address in 1929?” and also provide a quote from Ekwe Bilé. This distributed method of exhibition and ownership was also exemplified by Nora Al-Badri ’s work, ‘Take Me Home’ (2022). After a successful three-year legal battle for the public use of a 3D scan of the head of Nefertiti, Al-Badri’s work consisted of a golden, 3D-printed replica of the work currently on display in the Neues Museum in Berlin. The Kleinanzeigen works were housed at the transmediale warehouse at silent green Kulturquartier in Wedding, where they were available to collect after being reserved.

Alternative formats can be found at other locations: at Tempelhofer Feld, Joana Moll created the “sound experience” entitled ‘A Silent Opera for Anthropogenic Mass’ (2023), and in U-Bahn stations Lauren Lee McCarthy installed ‘Testing’ (2023), a series of posters considering the potential of biological data. At a number of spätis around the city, transmediale have provided a USB stick encased in a chrome pouch entitled ‘Data Dump Wundertüte’ (2023) containing a number of artworks by artists, including a dowsing chart, ‘The Museum of Ethics and Interplanetary Technologies – A Dowsing Poster’ (2023) by Patricia Domínguez and Suzanne Treister. In this tribute to the offline sharing of media, as well as the joyful childhood experience of purchasing a lucky dip, audiences could obtain works from the festival designed to be viewed digitally, or printed out at home. Some of these works are also exhibited in physical formats at the transmediale warehouse. While transmediale set the price at €4.99, some Spätis began increasing the price, much to the enjoyment of the creative team. This increase reinforced the inevitable variability that accompanies scale as a method.

Movie Magic: 10 Must-Watch Films That Feel Like a Speedy Yet Satisfying Journey

Nothing kills a movie faster than an unnecessary scene that drags the storyline to a complete halt. The film can be rolling along, and the director decides to ruin it with a random scene that does nothing to the storyline. It can really change the landscape of the movie. A group of movie lovers discussed the movies that supply an action-packed thrill ride without any fluff.

1. Jurassic Park (1993)

Jurassic Park (1993) Sam Neill, Ariana Richards, Joseph Mazzello

Movie lovers rave about the pacing of this ground-breaking science fiction action film. Every scene has a purpose. The basis of the movie is about man re-creating dinosaurs, but if you re-watch the film, you can see the true details of the movie. Greed, hubris, and playing god make this movie much more than an action movie. Critics agree this is one of the best movies made over the past several decades.

2. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

Ocean's Eleven (2001) Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Don Cheadle

A star-studded cast keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats in this heist movie. Pick any A-list actor featured in this film, and you’ll find it hard to take your eyes off them. With perfect dialogue and a great plan, the gang pulls off a perfect heist. Make sure you have all your snacks and sodas ready because you won’t want to leave the couch for fear of missing something.

3. Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Edge of Tomorrow (2014) Tom Cruise

Leave it to Tom Cruise to keep his audience entertained. When aliens attack Earth, Cruise must fight to keep his world safe. But there’s a catch. He’s caught in a time loop where he re-lives his own death multiple times before he learns how to defeat the attackers. Non-stop action is the best way to describe this film. I’m sweating just writing about it.

4. Back to the Future (1985)

Back to the Future (1985)Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd

If you make a movie about time travel, you better come up with some high-powered action. Even the slower scenes create a world that only exists in the Back to the Future universe. Pay attention because the little things in this film give away foreshadowing and insights into how time travel works. One movie lover said, “The intro BLITZES through character intros, plot exposition, and foreshadowing to get you to the Delorean as fast as humanly possible. It knows we don’t care about life in the 80s; we want to get into time travel ASAP.”

5. Speed (1994)

Speed (1994) Sandra Bullock, Keanu Reeves

Speed takes about five minutes to ramp up, but once it goes above 55 mph, strap in because you’re in for a ride. The film doesn’t waste any time keeping you engaged in the action. How can you not be engaged when there’s a bomb attached to a rogue bus zig-zagging around Los Angeles? Want to see a bus fly through the air like a rocket ship? Yeah, they do that, too.

6. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) Nicholas Hoult

High-powered cars in a dystopian future? Sign me up. This film is pedal to the metal from start to finish. Max, played by Tom Hardy, has about five lines of dialogue as he hangs from and jumps out of souped-up hot rods screaming through the dystopian desert. One recent fan sums up the movie perfectly: “The entire movie is two fast-paced action sequences with 5 min of dialogue in between.”

7. Die Hard (1988)

Die Hard (1988) Bruce Willis, Reginald VelJohnson, Paul Gleason

Experts agree the pacing of this movie is nearly perfect. Even the parts that are considered slow keep the audience interested. Fans of this movie quote lines from it 30 years later, proving that it holds up. The only real question to debate is whether this is a Christmas movie. Your thoughts?

8. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) Harrison Ford

An iconic action movie that set the stage for many action movies,  Raiders of the Lost Ark  has amazed fans for years. The film truly was ground-breaking for its time. Since its release, it’s been credited for changing how screenwriters pace their movies. It popularized the edge-of-your-seat action that few other movies before attempted.

9. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Top Gun: Maverick (2022) Jon Hamm

Fans had to wait 36 years for the sequel to the classic ’86 film Top Gun . That’s a long time, but this movie delivered in every way possible. It’s hard to make a two-plus-hour movie fly by, but I was sad when this thrill ride ended. I could watch Maverick fly that jet for an extra hour or two. I definitely feel the need for speed after that watch.

10. The Departed (2006)

The Departed (2006) Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon

Director Martin Scorsese is a master at directing and keeping his audience engaged. This crime drama flows smoothly from scene to scene, leaving the viewers wanting more. Great dialogue delivered by great actors is a recipe for success on the big screen. A tense mix of suspense, drama, mystery, and even some comedy makes this film a classic for years to come.

Whether you’re saving for a down payment on a house, an emergency fund, or a vacation, having specific targets helps you stay focused. Break down these goals into short-term and long-term objectives to make them more achievable.

Benefits of Goal Setting

Motivation:.

Clear goals keep you motivated and on track.

Knowing your objectives provides clarity on how much you need to save.

Progress Tracking:

Goals allow you to measure your progress effectively.

Create a Budget

A budget is your roadmap to financial success. Start by tracking your income and expenses to understand where your money is going. Use budgeting apps or tools to simplify this process. Categorize your expenses into fixed and variable costs to identify areas where you can cut back.

Steps to Create a Budget

List income sources:.

Document all sources of income.

Track Expenses:

Record your daily, weekly, and monthly expenses.

Set Limits:

Allocate specific amounts for each expense category.

Review Regularly:

Adjust your budget as your financial situation changes.

Automate Your Savings

One of the easiest ways to save money is by automating the process. Set up automatic transfers from your checking account to your savings account. This ensures that a portion of your income is saved before you have the chance to spend it. Automating your savings helps you stay consistent and reduces the temptation to skip savings.

Benefits of Automation

Consistency:.

Regular transfers ensure consistent savings.

Convenience:

Automation saves time and effort.

Discipline:

Reduces the risk of spending the money meant for savings.

Use High-Yield Savings Accounts

Traditional savings accounts often offer minimal interest rates. To maximize your savings, consider opening a high-yield savings account. These accounts typically offer higher interest rates, allowing your money to grow faster over time. Research and compare different banks to find the best rates available.

Why Choose High-Yield Accounts?

Higher returns:.

Earn more interest compared to standard accounts.

Inflation Protection:

Better interest rates help combat inflation.

Easy Access:

Funds remain accessible for emergencies.

Cut Unnecessary Expenses

Identifying and eliminating unnecessary expenses is crucial for boosting your savings. Review your spending habits and pinpoint areas where you can cut back. This could include dining out less, canceling unused subscriptions, or finding more affordable alternatives for certain services.

Common Areas to Cut Costs

Eating out:.

Cook at home more often.

Subscriptions:

Cancel or downgrade unnecessary subscriptions.

Reduce energy consumption to lower bills.

Avoid impulse purchases and look for discounts.

Take Advantage of Cash Back and Rewards Programs

Many credit cards and apps offer cash back and rewards programs. These programs give you a percentage of your spending back, which can add up over time. Use these rewards to boost your savings or offset expenses . Be sure to pay off your credit card balance in full each month to avoid interest charges.

Tips for Maximizing Rewards

Use credit responsibly:.

Only charge what you can pay off monthly.

Choose the Right Card:

Select cards that offer the best rewards for your spending habits.

Track Rewards:

Keep track of your earned rewards and redeem them regularly.

Build an Emergency Fund

An emergency fund is essential for financial security. Aim to save three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a separate, easily accessible account. This fund will provide a safety net in case of unexpected expenses, such as medical emergencies or job loss.

How to Build an Emergency Fund

Set a goal:.

Determine how much you need based on your monthly expenses.

Start Small:

Begin by saving a small amount each month.

Increase Gradually:

Gradually increase your contributions as your income grows.

Keep It Separate:

Use a dedicated account to avoid dipping into these funds for non-emergencies.

Educate Yourself on Personal Finance

Knowledge is power when it comes to managing your finances. Take the time to educate yourself on personal finance topics such as budgeting, investing, and debt management. There are plenty of free resources available, including blogs, podcasts, and online courses.

Resources for Financial Education

Read books by reputable financial experts.

Listen to personal finance podcasts for tips and insights.

Online Courses:

Enroll in free or low-cost courses on financial management.

Follow personal finance blogs for advice and updates.

Invest in Your Future

While saving is important, investing can help you grow your wealth over time. Consider opening an investment account and exploring options like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. If you’re new to investing, start with low-risk options and gradually diversify your portfolio as you become more comfortable.

Investment Tips for Beginners

Start early:.

The earlier you start, the more time your money has to grow.

Spread your investments across different asset classes to reduce risk.

Seek Advice:

Consult with a financial advisor if needed.

Stay Informed:

Keep up with market trends and adjust your strategy as necessary.

Monitor Your Progress

Regularly reviewing your financial progress is key to staying on track with your savings goals. Set aside time each month to review your budget, assess your spending, and track your savings. Adjust your plans as needed to ensure you’re moving towards your financial objectives.

Tools for Monitoring Progress

Budgeting apps:.

Use apps to track your income and expenses.

Spreadsheets:

Create detailed spreadsheets to monitor your financial health.

Financial Reviews:

Conduct periodic reviews to evaluate your progress.

Goal Setting:

Revisit and update your financial goals regularly.

Final Thought

Starting your savings journey in the digital age requires a combination of planning, discipline, and the use of modern tools and resources. By setting clear goals, creating a budget, automating your savings , and continuously educating yourself, you can build a strong financial foundation. Remember to review your progress regularly and adjust your strategies as needed to stay on track. With these ten essential tips, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your savings goals and securing your financial future.

Maintaining a healthy diet is essential for effective and sustainable weight loss. The foods we choose to consume can significantly impact our metabolism, energy levels, and overall well-being. While exercise is a crucial component of any weight loss regimen, the foundation of successful weight management lies in our dietary habits. Consuming nutrient-dense, whole foods can help regulate appetite, improve metabolic health, and support long-term weight loss goals. Conversely, certain foods can sabotage these efforts by contributing to weight gain, inflammation, and poor metabolic function.

To optimize your weight loss journey, it’s important to identify and eliminate foods that hinder progress. To discover some of the most detrimental options, we spoke to health experts  Lisa Richards , nutritionist and creator of The Candida Diet, Kelsey Mauro , functional medicine gut health consultant, and Jay Cowin , registered nutritionist. According to them, three common dietary culprits that can impede weight loss are vegetable oils, sugary pastries, and white bread. These items not only add unnecessary calories but also affect your body’s ability to burn fat efficiently. Learn more about the risks of each below.

<h2>1. Vegetable oils</h2> <p class="msn-p">When it comes to the worst commonly used ingredients that are likely to slow your weight loss progress, vegetable oils are definitely somewhere at the top of the list. Mauro warns that these cooking oils, which are processed with chemicals and packed with omega-6 fatty acids, "are a key contributor to inflammation" and "can lead to chronic inflammatory diseases and an increased risk of obesity."</p> <p class="msn-p">Additionally, vegetable oils offer virtually no nutritional value. As Cowin notes, they "contain only trace amounts of nutrients, meaning cooking with this oil doesn't provide much benefit to your body or diet compared to other oils that are higher in unsaturated fats like olive oil."</p> <p class="msn-p">Of course, there's also the simple fact that this ingredient is extremely calorie-dense, with a single tablespoon coming in around 120 calories. Overall, your best bet is to trade vegetable oils for olive oil.</p> <p class="msn-p"><b>Like SheFinds content?</b> <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/channel/source/SheFinds/sr-vid-3fn038uv22ngw95eur7smu4vypsdpb53cs742077mvms9468tfys?disableErrorRedirect=true&infiniteContentCount=0&cvid=75bcbb0eeaca49f0bcecd1417b7f76d4&ei=34">Be sure to follow us.</a></p>

<h2>2. White Bread</h2> <p class="msn-p">Many people prefer white bread for their sandwiches, toast, and more. It may even be a staple in your own pantry and diet. Unfortunately, thought, Richards warns that this is one of the worst foods for your overall health and could seriously stall your weight loss efforts. For this reason, cutting it out of your diet is one great step to take on your weight loss journey.</p> <p class="msn-p">White bread and other refined carbs, Richards says, "have many negative side effects for our health and belly fat is just one of them." <h2>3. Sugary Pastries</h2> <p>Here's another type of refined carb that health experts urge you to kick to the curb if weight loss is your goal (or even if you just want to be healthier overall). Richards cites sugary pastries like donuts and danishes as some of the worst foods for inflammation and weight gain.</p> <p>"They are a combination of refined carbs and fat from oil," she warns. "These two together provide you with a high calorie, inflammatory, and weight promoting snack."</p> <p>Like white bread, she goes on to explain that pastries are highly inflammatory and likely to lead to a quick rise in glucose due to all that sugar. "When the body is inflamed for a prolonged period of time it becomes more difficult to lose weight," Richards says, emphasizing that "the body will begin to hold on to weight more easily."</p> <p>For a healthier breakfast that can still hit that sweet spot, you may want to go with some yogurt, granola, and fruit. <a href="https://www.shefinds.com/collections/lose-weight-healthy-breakfast-recipes/" rel="noopener">Here are some of the best weight loss-friendly breakfasts to choose from.</a></p>

<h2>Bottom line</h2> <p>Ultimately, of course, it's okay to treat yourself to your favorite sweet pastry every once in a while—and it's also important to remember that in many cases, a highly restrictive diet can do more harm than good. However, as you navigate your weight loss journey, it is in your best interest to make an effort to limit your intake of foods like white bread, sugary pastries, and vegetable oil as much as possible. Your body will thank you for it!</p>
