Apprenticeships in the travel industry

If you are interested in starting a career in travel, or in broadening your skills as you develop your career, an apprenticeship is a great way to start. Many travel companies offer apprenticeship schemes that include a variety of different routes to choose from. ABTA worked very closely with People 1st (who were the workforce development charity that represented travel at the time) and a number of our members and other industry representatives as part of the Travel Consultant Trailblazers Group. This group developed new professional standards for Travel Consultant Apprentices. This apprenticeship has an end assessment test, ensuring that every apprentice needs to meet the agreed industry professional standards, no matter where they did their apprenticeship. These standards are regularly reviewed by ABTA members and IfATE – The Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education .

The Travel Consultant Apprenticeship covers both leisure and business travel. This means that both Leisure Travel and Business Travel employers can offer apprenticeships. The apprenticeship will last between 12-24 months depending on previous qualifications and you will be on an employment contract with an employer who will give you the required on the job training.

Individuals and employers can find out more about a wide range of apprenticeships through the Government apprenticeship website .

Find out more about apprenticeships in Wales , Scotland and Northern Ireland .

A number of training providers and colleges also offer the travel apprenticeship. The ABTA Partners below can assist you with advice:

  • Damar Training
  • Grant Thornton

DAMAR training offers a free apprenticeship helpline for ABTA members which can be accessed in the member zone.

A growing number ABTA members offer apprenticeships in a number of other areas too such as a range of aviation-related apprenticeships, human resources, digital marketing and IT. The range of careers in travel companies can be vast and the range of opportunities is varied.

Whether you are an individual looking for an apprenticeship, or an ABTA Member or Partner wanting to offer an apprenticeship of your own, the Government apprenticeship website has a wealth of information to assist you.

Many ABTA Members recruit apprentices directly through their website and Facebook pages; so do have a look at those.  Some examples of ABTA members apprentices pages are:

  • Barrhead Travel
  • Hays Travel

There are many more ABTA members offering apprenticeships. Take off in Travel is another great resource showcasing careers and apprenticeships.

Danielle Gay

Trainee Surveyor, Energy Efficiency and Regeneration Team, Neighbourhoods and Housing.

An apprenticeship was a great practical way of learning for me, with the added bonus of getting paid and it led to a permanent role here.

I joined the council as an apprentice at the age of 17. I learned on the job. The training was totally relevant to what I wanted to do. It was a great practical way of learning for me, with the added bonus of getting paid. It led to a permanent role here.

I have always felt supported by my managers along the way and always felt comfortable in the systems in place to take care of Hull City Council employees. The council have always encouraged me to progress in my career and have recently funded my course in Construction Management.

I get involved in all sorts of projects to improve homes and their energy efficiency.

I am extremely passionate about this city and very proud of the investment people have managed to secure for the city. The marina is my favourite place, along with the old town. It has a great vibe and has been transformed into something beautiful.

I recommend working here. There are policies in place to ensure staff and their welfare is taken care of. Covid has been a challenge for most people. Working for the council I know there is support available if I need it.

Apprenticeships could be the ideal option for you when you’re thinking about getting your first job, starting your career or changing your career path. Apprenticeships combine working and experience with studying and qualifications. As an Apprentice, you’ll be working for a company with real responsibilities, but you’ll also go to College, University or maybe have a personal tutor who visits you in the workplace to study your related subject. As well as this, you’ll also be mentored by an experienced member of staff who’ll teach you the more hands-on skills you need!

Your apprenticeship will last between 1 and 6 years, depending on the level course you choose to study. When you finish your Apprenticeship, you will gain your Apprenticeship certificate and anything from an NVQ, BTEC or a degree as well as some other industry related qualifications your employer or training provider might put you through!

If you choose to do an intermediate (level 2) Apprenticeship, you’ll get qualifications the equivalent of 5 GCSES. An advanced (level 3) Apprenticeship is the same as doing 2 A-Levels! There are longer programmes such as the higher Apprenticeships and degree Apprenticeships. Higher (Level 4) Apprenticeships would mean you get qualifications the equivalent to a foundation year of a degree but higher Apprenticeships are also at level 5 and level 6. A degree (level 6) Apprenticeship will give you a Bachelor’s Degree qualification and a Masters (level 7) Apprenticeship would be the equivalent of your getting a master’s degree! What’s not to love about gaining those qualifications, all without the debt?!

When you choose to do your Apprenticeship, you’ll be working towards an ‘Apprenticeship Standard’. The Government decided to introduce these in 2017, and it means that no matter what your jobs is, there are still certain attitudes, skills and academic knowledge that you should learn during your Apprenticeship. This means that everybody who’s doing the standard as you, could be doing something slightly different day to day at work (like a real working environment) but you will also learn the essentials of the job in any company. Perfect!

Use this search page to find the best Apprenticeship for you and start your career today!

‘Infested’: Attention-seeking YouTubers accused of ‘ruining’ Japan amid tourist crackdown

Attention-seeking live-streamers have been accused of “ruining” one of the most popular travel destinations for Aussies.

‘Punishment’: China surrounds Taiwan

Attention-seeking live-streamers have “ruined” Japan with their disruptive and annoying attempts at making content, one of the world’s most famous YouTubers has claimed in a scathing video.

Felix Kjellberg, better known as PewDiePie, released a video this week reacting to a number of such clips, expressing outrage at the nuisance creators and facetiously branding them “terrorists”.

Kjellberg claimed these YouTubers were acting as “obnoxious as possible [to] get a bunch of attention, get a bunch of hate clicks”, and that this growing trend had become an “infestation”.

“YouTubers, they’re the worst,” he said in the video, which has been viewed more than 1.3 million times. “YouTubers ruin everything, and right now YouTubers are ruining Japan … and now it’s come so far that Japan is actually starting to take action.”

The Swede, who was for many years the most subscribed creator on YouTube with 111 million followers, rose to fame streaming video games before semi-retiring in 2022, when he moved to Japan to live with his wife Marzia.

Kjellberg highlighted multiple videos of streamers trying to create viral content and publicity by being a nuisance in the conservative country, such as refusing to pay a bus fee and a train ticket.

He also reacted to another infamous streamer, Johnny Somali , who sparked outrage in Japan last year after filming himself harassing people in public and in the subway, as well as trespassing in a construction zone and repeating “Fukushima” when he was caught and told to leave.

The Somali-American streamer, whose real name is Ramsey Khalid Ismael, was eventually arrested and fined 200,000 yen ($1930) before leaving the country.

Kjellberg was open with his disapproval, slamming Ismael as “such an idiot”.

He also had a message for anyone trying to replicate this behaviour.

“It’s not going to be worth it,” he said. “You’re not going to grow your channel, you’re just going to make everyone hate you and you’ll regret it. Don’t be an idiot.”

Ismael later fired back, threatening to sue the multi-millionaire creator and calling him a “hypocrite” and a “racist”.

“Racist against blacks, and a anti-Semite! This hypocrite has no room to even discuss me, especially with misinformation and lies!” he wrote on X, referencing Kjellberg’s past controversies.

In 2017, Kjellberg was criticised for saying a racist slur while livestreaming.

Ismael followed up by saying, “He called me a ‘terrorist’. Very interesting use of language that could be racially motivated. Definitely defamatory, and considered slander, and libel. See you in court FELIX.”

It comes as Japan increasingly cracks down on disruptive behaviour from tourists.

The town Fujikawaguchiko grew sick of badly behaved tourists. Picture: Kazuhiro Nogi/AFP

Earlier this month, a Japanese town mounted a large 2.5-metre by 20-metre mesh barrier at a popular viewing spot for Mount Fuji, in an attempt to deter photo-taking by an ever-growing number of tourists.

Japan’s most famous sight can be seen for miles around, but Fujikawaguchiko locals were fed up with streams of mostly foreign visitors littering, trespassing and breaking traffic rules in their hunt for a photo to share on social media.

Parking illegally and ignoring a smoking ban, they would cram a pavement to shoot the snow-capped mountain, which soars photogenically into the sky from behind a convenience store, residents said.

Don't do this in Japan on your next holiday

And in April, a new tourist ban was established in a popular district of Kyoto.

Tourists are now barred from entering certain alleys in Gion, the famous district where geisha work in teahouses, with Aussie travellers warned to take note.

Local residents had become fed-up with hordes of tourists, saying their neighbourhood “is not a theme park”, pleading with the city to take action.

Kyoto has banned tourists from certain areas of Gion. Picture: iStock

Reported incidents of unruly tourists included a maiko’s kimono being torn and another having cigarette butt put in her collar. A maiko is an apprentice geisha.

“We don’t want to do this, but we’re desperate,” said Isokazu Ota, an executive member of a Gion residents’ council, comparing tourists who crowd around geisha emerging from the narrow alleys to “paparazzi”.

One video shared on Reddit showed a female tourist aggressively running up to a geisha as she walked down a street to take photos, obstructing her path and forcing to her to go around.

“What the hell is wrong with that idiot? How can anyone not understand how absolutely wrong that is? That level of stupidity is beyond measure!” one commenter said.

“People think real places are similar to Disneyland,” wrote another.
