History of Hillsborough Castle

Hillsborough Castle was built as a grand Georgian country house for the Hill family (Earls of Downshire) around 1760.

It was owned by successive Marquesses until 1922 when the 6th Marquis sold it to the British government. This created a home and office for the Governor of Northern Ireland following the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921.

Government House

After some renovations, the first Governor, 3rd Duke of Abercorn, took up his official residence in the castle and it was renamed Government House.

In 1972, the role of Governor was abolished and direct rule was moved to London. A new role of Secretary of State for Northern Ireland was created in place of the Governor and Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.

As the representative of the Queen, the castle became his official residence. The gardens were opened to the public in 1999.

Hillsborough Castle has hosted many important meetings and royal visitors. The Anglo-Irish Agreement was signed there in 1985, the Queen stayed at the castle in 2002 during her golden Jubilee Tour.

US President George W. Bush was a guest in 2003 along with British PM Tony Blair. In 2014, the Prince of Wales hosted the first investiture in Northern Ireland at the castle. The same year, management of the castle was contracted to Historic Royal Palaces.

HILLSBOROUGH CASTLE AND GARDENS (2024) All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (with Photos)

Visit Hillsborough Castle: The Royal Residence Of Northern Ireland

Hillsborough Castle is a working royal and governmental mansion of Northern Ireland and is open to the public.

Quick Links

Hillsborough castle - the royal residence of northern ireland, hillsborough castle's impressive gardens, tours of hillsborough castle, planning a visit to hillsborough castle.

While the most famous official royal residences are Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and Palace of Holyroodhouse (in Scotland), there is also Hillsborough Castle in Northern Island. Visitors should take the time to visit both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland (they are quite different) . Visiting Hillsborough Castle is one of the top things to do in Northern Ireland.

The Hillsborough Castle is the official residence of the monarch in Northern Ireland (now King Charles III) when he is present in the province - otherwise, it is the official residence of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. It does not have the same level as the official royal residence of Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, or the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Hillsborough Castle is situated in the village of Royal Hillsborough. Despite its name, it is not actually a true castle but rather a Georgian country house. It is what is known as a late-18th-century Irish Big House. It was common practice for the British upper classes to call their grand country houses "castles" as it added to the sense of the antiquity of their families.

It was built in the 1700s and later sold to the British government in 1922 with the partition of Ireland as southern Ireland became independent while Northern Ireland was carved out and remained in the United Kingdom. It has since played a central role in the peace-building process for 40 years and putting the Troubles in the past.

  • Status: Royal Residence & Official Home Of The Secretary Of State For Northern Ireland

As well as being the official residence for King Charles III while in Northern Ireland, it is also used as an important guest house for prominent international visitors.

Today it is managed by Historic Royal Palaces and is open to the public, and is located a short drive out of Belfast - the largest city in Northern Ireland.

Notable features in the garden include the Walled Garden, Moss Walk, Yew Tree Walk, the Lake, and Lady Alice's Temple. There is also an interactive play trail for the children - the Imaginary Menagerie. It is an animal-inspired trail through the gardens celebrating the animals that make Hillsborough their home.

The Hillsborough Castle is a working royal and governmental building. There are sometimes special events being held here (even American Presidents have been entertained there), so it is important to check their website for their calendar and to know when it is open to the public.

It's where military leaders planned the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 that took place on the other side of the Strait of Dover in France.

Dover Castle is made of gray stone brick that forms a square castle with square towers and is surrounded by defensive walls of the same color. It overlooks the White Cliffs of Dover and onto the strait. From the top of the castle, you get views of the surrounding area and on clear days, it’s possible to see across the Strait of Dover all the way to the shores of France. On your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to tour and learn more about the lighthouse built by the Romans, and see the Great Tower that has been restored to look like it may have in the 12 th century during the reign of Henry II. You can also go into the tunnels to see exhibits about how they were used by the British military during World War II.

4. Hampton Court Palace

Location: East Molesey, Surry

Tickets: Book your tickets ahead of time to save money. If you are traveling on your own and plan to visit several castles, consider purchasing an annual membership to save on ticket prices. Membership to Historic Royal Palaces includes entry to the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Banqueting House, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle.

Suggested activity: Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace Tour

Hampton Court Palace was built in the 16 th century and quickly became a favorite locale for Henry VIII; he lived here with all six of his wives. Another notable monarch was King William III (aka William of Orange), who wanted a baroque palace, though much of the Tudor style portion of the palace was left alone while architects and builders made Fountain Court and created an updated palace for the new king.

Hampton Court Palace is large and lavish. On a tour, you’ll get to see both the Tudor and baroque portions of the palace from the grand staircases, ornate paintings on the walls and ceilings, and detailed tapestries. You can see the King’s apartments and the Chapel Royal, an ornate chapel where Henry VIII attended religious services.

At Henry VIII’s Kitchens, you’ll get a glimpse into the day-to-day life of workers at the palace and how many people were required to keep the palace functioning. Some 200 people were employed in the kitchens, made of several buildings, and they made 800 meals per day to feed the royal family, servants, staff and guards.

Don’t skip the Hampton Court Gardens. The formal gardens are well-manicured and perfect for a stroll. For a bit of whimsy, try your hand at the hedge maze, said to be the oldest in the United Kingdom.

5. Highclere Castle (aka Downton Abbey)

Location: Newbury, Berkshire

Tickets: Purchase tickets ahead of your visit to save money compared to the price at the door and to ensure entry.

Suggested activity: Downton Abbey and Oxford Tour from London Including Highclere Castle

Highclere Castle is on the bucket list of many a "Downton Abbey" fan and a top castle to visit on a London vacation. The popular show and movie of the same name put Highclere on the map for many tourists. The grand castle, as we see it today, was built in 1679 and was greatly transformed by Sir Charles Barry, the man who designed the Houses of Parliament, adding many elements to the castle that adhered to Victorian ideals of architecture and design.

Today visitors of the castle can tour rooms like the library that are so familiar to Downtown Abbey fans and see the beautiful wallpaper that shimmers in the sunlight, the paintings and photographs, and get an up-close look at detailed architectural elements. Tours of Highclere are self-guided; however, guides are stationed in the rooms to answer questions and provide information. You can learn about the filming of "Downton Abbey" as well as the history of the real-life castle. If you happen to be visiting London in December and celebrating Christmas, a tour of the castle would be a special treat with elaborate decorations and festively decorated trees throughout the castle.

6. Kensington Palace

Tickets: Book your tickets ahead of time to save money. If you are traveling on your own and plan to visit several castles, consider purchasing an annual membership to save on ticket prices. A membership to Historic Royal Palaces includes entry to the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Banqueting House, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle.

In the 17th century, William III and Mary II chose to make Nottingham House their home, and subsequent monarchs expanded what became Kensington Palace. It served as the residence of English monarchs until 1837 when Victoria was crowned queen and opted to leave her childhood home in favor of Buckingham Palace.

Today, the house is the residence of William and Catherine, Prince and Princess of Wales, but historic areas of the palace remain open to the public for tours. On a visit to the house, you can expect to see the King's State Apartments, which despite its name was not where the king and the family spent their daily lives, but rather a place where monarchs held meetings and conducted official duties. Part of this area is the King's Staircase, where a mural by William Kent adorns the walls and ceilings. Even the banisters feature lavish details with metal formed into a curving and swirling pattern.

7. Tower of London

Suggested activity:   Tower of London: Entry Ticket, Crown Jewels and Beefeater Tour

The Tower of London is a top thing to do in London not least of all because it is where the crown jewels are on display. If you want to see the exhibit, be sure to allot enough time during your day. Unless you visit in the off-season, wait times to get into the exhibit can be a half hour or longer. Crowds also tend to be smaller during shoulder season . Once inside, you can view displays of crowns, rings, robes and other official garb. For the best chance to avoid wait times, arrive early in the day near opening time.

Don't skip the rest of the castle though. It's been a part of London for hundreds of years and is full of history. Your entry ticket includes a guided tour by a Yeoman Warder, aka a Beefeater. You can also opt to purchase an audio guide. When I visited, it was December, so it wasn't very busy, and I loved the tour. The Yeoman Warder told us some of the history of the castle, interesting details about the fortifications, and stories of people who lived there, visited and were imprisoned there. He also shared a little about himself and his military career, and I very much enjoyed how he enhanced the experience and brought the history of the Tower of London to life.

The Tower of London is like a microcity with buildings that have served as living quarters, a church and royal residences. It's been there since the Middle Ages and has seen the likes of Geoffrey Chaucer, been a prison to many famous figures like Princess Elizabeth before she became Queen Elizabeth I, as well as more notorious figures like Guy Fawkes. And the Tower Green has served as the execution site of Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, Henry VIII's second and fifth wives respectively.

8. Windsor Castle

Location: Windsor, Berkshire

Tickets: Book tickets ahead of time to save money compared to the in-person price and to ensure entry on the day of your visit.

One of the official residences of the king, the Royal Collection Trust says this castle is the "oldest and largest castle in the world." Windsor Castle 's construction began in 1070 at the behest of William the Conqueror, and during its hundreds of years, British Monarchs have added to the castle, modifying many elements to suit the styles of the times. While the castle's original intent was more fortification than luxurious palace, that too has changed. The castle has seen gothic, baroque, regency and neoclassical updates throughout the years.

Though the castle remains one of the official residences of the king, it is open to the public. During your visit, you can see the State Apartments and Semi-State Rooms. These areas are used to host heads of state, important ceremonies and official entertainment. These rooms are opulent with glistening gilded elements and luxuriously crimson furnishings. Rooms are decorated with painted portraits, dark woods, chandeliers and other lavish features. You'll also see rooms with elaborate murals on the ceiling and detailed carvings.

Tours of Windsor Castle are self-guided. Grab an audio guide for information and historical context for the many sights on your tour.

For more than 300 years, Hillsborough Castle has played host to some of Ireland’s most important visitors and has become a vital part of the island of Ireland's history.

From Benjamin Franklin to the Dalai Lama, countless figures who helped to build the modern world have passed through the doors at Hillsborough Castle, enjoying the acres of astonishing gardens that complement the official residence of His Majesty The King in Northern Ireland.

A royal residence

Historic palace

Hillsborough Castle serves as the official residence of His Majesty The King in Northern Ireland and, as such, it is impossible not to feel the hand of history.

Technically not a castle but a traditional Irish Georgian house, Hillsborough provides elegance and grace from the start. Boasting facilities fit for the royal family, several State Rooms provide visitors with not just a history of the house itself but of Northern Ireland. The walls of the Throne Room are lined with green, silk damask fabric, while the Red Room takes its name from the red fabric which covers its walls.

On a tour of the current Royal Residence, you'll hear expert household staff sharing personal stories of entertainment, diplomacy and celebration that vividly connect the past to the present. From the State Drawing Room to the Stair Hall, a wander through each room of the Big House provides its own unique charms, but it's in Lady Grey's peaceful Study that you may wish to stop awhile and daydream about the past lives lived in this historic place.

Today’s grand entrance to the house contains objects that predate Northern Irish politics and religion, yet are integral to its past. FINANCIAL TIMES

Hillsborough Castle and gardens, County Down

L-R: Inside Hillsborough Castle; view of the gardens at Hillsborough]

Bursting with colour, the breathtaking grounds surrounding Hillsborough Castle are a joy, with their delightful mix of woodlands, wild meadows and the more formal, landscaped gardens.

Our advice? Upon arrival, make your way to the stunning Walled Garden , a historical horticultural space where fruit, vegetables and flowers have been grown for the castle since the 18th century. Get inspiration for your own garden or simply marvel at the Espalier fruit trees, which have been bearing apples and pears on the walls for more than 50 years.

It's one of the finest gardens you've never seen – but is something of a hidden gem BELFAST TELGRAPH

Garden highlights

The stunning Yew Tree Walk takes its name from the trees that mirror each other along a path, which once served as a major road for the surrounding town. The Moss Walk is exactly as you’d expect: a deep, soft carpet of moss growing beneath a canopy of lime trees.

Recent work has unveiled forgotten wonders such as the Lost Garden, and no walk through the grounds would be complete without a visit to Lady Alice’s Temple – the perfect lakeside place to stop, relax and just listen to the sounds of nature.

If your walk through the Gardens has made you curious, you can try the local produce grown on site at either the Hillsborough Castle in the Weston Pavillion or the The Stable Yard Tea Room. For the full food experience, though, don't miss the Hillsborough Castle and Gardens Food Festival , which takes place every August.

And when you've finished wandering through history at Hillsborough, head to the town outside the castle grounds for a taste of local life in pubs such as The Plough Inn , The Hillside and The Parson’s Nose which serve food as well as drinks.

Visiting Hammond Castle north of Boston is like taking a short trip to Europe

By Chris Tanaka

Updated on: June 6, 2024 / 10:28 AM EDT / CBS Boston

GLOUCESTER - There's a hidden gem on the Massachusetts coast, north of Boston, that's working to become unhidden. The Hammond Castle Museum in Gloucester is a sprawling estate tucked against the rocky coastline that looks like a castle through the ages, from 11th century France to the Renaissance.

Who was John Hays Hammond, Jr.?

John Hays Hammond Jr. had the the castle built from 1926 to 1929. He imported several pieces from Europe to add authenticity to the structure. A fascinating figure, Hammond was also a scientist and inventor.

"He has over 510 patents," Linda Harvey, the museum's executive director, told WBZ-TV. "He worked on things like robotics and guided missiles. He's known as the father of radio control."

Hammond held many lavish gatherings at the castle. The Great Hall was the main setting .The large, long room with cathedral ceilings is home to many of his prized possessions.

gloucester.jpg

What's inside Hammond Castle?

"Art, artifacts, history, this room really has it all," said tour guide Donovan LaFontaine. "Artifacts in this room sometimes dating back as far as the third century, all the way up to the big 15th century Renaissance period as well."

The adjoining courtyard features actual middle age storefronts imported from France, an indoor pool and a Roman sarcophagus. The dining room has 19th century Spanish tiles with antique walls and ceiling panels.

Gardner Museum similarities

If the description reminds you of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , you aren't wrong. The two knew each other and were good friends. Like her estate-turned museum, Hammond Castle is a magnificent, yet quirky, attraction reflective of its owner.

"We want you to enjoy it with the richness of the building itself, but also to maybe pick up a few interesting facts along the way," Harvey told WBZ.

Harvey also said the museum is constantly looking for ways to connect with the community. It features seasonal, temporary exhibitions and hosts about 100 weddings a year. Adult tickets cost $20 and there are discounts for seniors and children.

The Best Tours of Buckingham Palace

On a visit to London , some of the top attractions are linked to the royal family. But nothing is quite as iconic as a visit to the one of the three official residences of the monarchy – Buckingham Palace . While it's only open to the public on select dates, you can relish in its beauty from the regal gates, snap a selfie and catch a Changing the Guard ceremony.

How to Tour Buckingham Palace

For about 10 weeks every summer (select dates from July 11 to Sept. 29, 2024), Buckingham Palace opens its elaborate gates, welcoming visitors to explore its lavish State Rooms, grounds and Royal Collection artworks. The Royal Mews is also open to visitors from March to October, showcasing the Royal Family's real working stables and ornate, historic carriages – including the Gold State Coach used for Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Coronation in 2022.

If you aren't here at the right time, fear not; this extravagant, 18th-century royal residence is just as impressive from the outside, making it worth a visit any time of year. Check online for a current schedule of the Changing the Guard ceremony – when the red-and-black-clad Royal Guard marches toward the palace, accompanied by striking military music – and see a tradition that's been running for more than 300 years. Combine it with explorations in the surrounding area of Westminster to see London at its most quintessential.

You can explore all of this independently, of course – but if you're looking to dig a little deeper, hear about the king's coronation and uncover local secrets, consider a guided London tour . Insider experts can point out the best photo spots, take you to the must-see sights and show you the ins and outs of the area, while sharing knowledge of the country's royal history along the way.

There are tons of options out there, so where do you start? Based on local knowledge and traveler review sites, here are some of the most highly rated tours.

Changing of the Guard Walking Tour

Price: From $13 Duration: 2 to 3 hours Standout perk: Witness the pomp of the iconic Changing the Guard ceremony.

Watch the Royal Guard march toward Buckingham Palace as you witness this historic, quintessentially British spectacle on a tour of Westminster's highlights. Accompanied by a military band, you'll see the Old Guard (soldiers on duty) switch to the New Guard as they arrive at the palace from Wellington Barracks. Your guide will explain which regiment is which, before taking you on a guided walking tour past other world-famous, attractions, including Big Ben, Clarence House, the Houses of Parliament , St James's Palace and Westminster Abbey .

Recent travelers gave high ratings to the tour, saying guides were able to take them to the best photo spots for the ceremony while offering a wealth of historical and entertaining insight.

Tours leave at 10 a.m. and depart from the Victoria Palace Theatre. The outings end at Parliament Square.

Local tip: Look at the Horse Guards Clock on the Horse Guards Parade – the official entrance to Buckingham Palace and St James's Palace – to see a dark stain above the 2 (II, in Roman numerals). It marks the time King Charles I was executed outside the Palace of Whitehall in 1649, after being charged with treason.

Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle Tour

Price: From $161 Duration: 8.5 hours Standout perk: Get a rare chance to explore the State Rooms with Buckingham Palace tickets, and tick off two of the United Kingdom's grandest royal residences in one day.

This twin-castle tour offers the opportunity to enter Buckingham Palace and see its State Rooms, Royal Collection artwork and other treasures, with commentary from an audio guide. After you've toured the palace, you'll travel by coach about 25 miles west of London to Windsor Castle – the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, and the family home of the monarchy for more than 900 years. Explore the castle's lavish State Apartments and grounds, and visit St George's Chapel – the burial place of Queen Elizabeth II alongside many other monarchs, and the spot where Prince Harry married Meghan Markle.

Recent travelers said the tour was a great opportunity to see inside both palaces. Several commented on the extensive art collection at Buckingham Palace, and many enjoyed hearing insights from the guides, although some complained about long lines.

The tour takes place from July through September on select Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and leaves from Victoria Coach Station at 7:45 a.m.

Local tip: Windsor Castle has its own Changing the Guard ceremony, as well as its own extensive art collection. The ceremony takes place at 11 a.m. on select days of the week.

Best of London Tour Including Tower of London and Changing of the Guard

The illuminated Millennium Wheel (or London Eye) at night.

Price: From $144; with optional London Eye or Harrods cream tea for an additional fee Duration: 9 hours Standout perk: You'll see many of London's key attractions in one day, and enjoy a river cruise thrown in for good measure.

If you want to combine a visit to see Buckingham Palace's Changing the Guard ceremony with stops at several other London spots, this is a great choice. The full-day trip begins at the UNESCO listed Tower of London where you'll have the chance to see the crown jewels.

From here, you'll visit Buckingham Palace to witness the famous pomp and pageantry of the ceremony and get the chance to admire the palace's impressive architecture from the outside. The day includes a tour of the elaborate St. Paul's Cathedral (not available on Sundays), before embarking on a boat tour of the Thames, passing key attractions including Tower Bridge and Shakespeare's Globe. The day also includes a photo stop at Westminster Abbey, where Prince William and Kate Middleton married in 2011, and a brief walking tour of Parliament Square. Travelers can choose to add a ride on the famous London Eye observation wheel (or opt for a quintessentially British cream tea at Harrods instead).

Recent travelers loved the tour and praised the guides as highly knowledgeable and entertaining. Many were impressed with how much they saw in a day and said it gave them a great introduction to London (although it's worth noting a few felt there was quite a bit of walking involved).

Tours leave from Victoria Coach Station at 7:45 a.m. and finish at the London Eye.

Local tip: If you fancy delving deeper into the Tower of London in your own time, book a ticket to see the Ceremony of the Keys. Dating back seven centuries, this nightly ceremony is when the castle gets locked up for the night, with a special exchange between the sentry and Yeoman Warder taking place at 9:30 p.m. between the atmospheric battlements – both eerie and magical.

London: Explore the Parks and Palaces on a Morning Bike Tour

Price: From $37 Duration: 3.5 hours Standout perk: Get active on two wheels, and combine a Buckingham Palace stop with a visit to Kensington Palace and other royal sights.

This half-day guided cycling tour is a great option to get active on your London trip. You'll start at Kensington Gardens – the home of Kensington Palace, where Princess Diana lived with the now King Charles, and Queen Victoria's birthplace. From here, pedal to the Royal Albert Hall to check out this elaborate concert hall, opened by Queen Victoria in 1871. Afterward, cycle through Hyde Park and on to Green Park to reach Buckingham Palace, where your guide will regale you with little-known stories about the palace. Continue on to Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben as you take in some of the capital's key highlights, before returning to the Royal Parks.

Recent travelers raved about the tour and were impressed by the guides' knowledge. Many enjoyed the small group size and said the cycling was a good, leisurely pace, with plenty to see along the way, and iced tea and snacks included as a bonus.

The tour leaves from outside the main entrance at Hilton London Hyde Park. The recommended minimum age is 9 – you can pre-book junior bikes and child seats. While the bicycle and helmet for use during the tour are included, attraction entry fees are additional.

Local tip: If you've got time after the tour, it's well worth exploring Kensington Palace a bit more. Admire the elaborate, Georgian-era King's Staircase and the King's State Gallery with its fine art collection, see the Queen's State Apartments where Mary II would come to relax or welcome guests, and visit the Sunken Garden, once a favorite spot of Princess Diana's. After, enjoy afternoon tea or lunch at the Kensington Palace Pavilion amid the gardens.

The Premier Classic London: Private 4-Hour Tour in a Black Cab

The Houses of Parliament and Big Ben across the River Thames at sunset.

Price: From $482 Duration: 4 hours Standout perk: You'll see many of London's must-see attractions, and as it's a private tour, you can tailor the trip to your liking.

If you're after a private tour, this half-day trip in a classic London black cab is just the ticket.

You can choose to align your visit to Buckingham Palace with a Changing the Guard ceremony, and you'll get expert commentary from your personal taxi driver, who's also a registered tour guide. Alongside the palace, you'll pass must-see points including the Houses of Parliament, Downing Street, St James's Palace, the Tower of London, Piccadilly Circus, Shakespeare's Globe, Borough Market and Covent Garden , with options to stop along the way.

Recent travelers loved the tour and said guides were able to tailor the trip, stopping at spots both on and off the tourist trail and offering plenty of historical insight.

Your driver-guide can pick you up and drop you off at your hotel; or a central London location.

Local tip: Make a stop at Borough Market to try some of the best food in the city, with more than 100 stalls offering everything from Persian to Italian, alongside plenty of fresh produce.
