Tourist Information kiosks are not as ubiquitous in the United States as they are in Europe, but Visitor Information Centers do exist in Los Angeles if you know where to look for them. Their friendly multi-lingual staff can help you book hotels, tours, shows and attractions tickets or make dinner reservations. They can provide you with walking maps of the area around them and attraction brochures. They also often have discount shopping coupons available for nearby retailers. Unlike the better-staffed Visitor Centers, kiosks generally only provide maps, brochures, and directions and may not sell attraction and tour tickets.
In addition to these Visitor Centers, the information desk staff at shopping malls, and your hotel concierges can provide many of the same services. However, unlike your hotel concierge, the Visitor Information staff are not expecting a tip for selling you attraction tickets and making you reservations.

Visitors Information Kiosk at Hollywood & Highland If you just need a quick map, there's a Visitor Information kiosk in the Babylon Courtyard at Hollywood & Highland Center . Monterey County
- Carmel-by-the-Sea
Carmel Valley
Moss landing, pacific grove, pebble beach.
Rocky cliffs, lush mountains, coastal redwood forests and hidden beaches combine to create an epic backdrop for recreation, romance and relaxed exploration. Hike trails through fragrant forests to scenic overlooks and beaches. Grab a table with a view, soak in the surroundings and settle into euphoric state of relaxation. This bucket-list worthy destination with its charming, eclectic populace and cosmic vibe makes for some unforgettable moments.
Carmel-By-The-Sea
No exploration of California’s central coast is complete without a sojourn to Carmel-by-the-Sea. This quaint town is a delightful fusion of art galleries, boutiques, hotels, white-sand beaches, fine restaurants and whimsically styled homes. Make time to wind down its charming, historic streets and courtyards for a storybook ambiance that can be appreciated by romantics of all ages.
Sun-kissed days make Carmel Valley one of Monterey County’s prized wine appellations, and the perfect rustic wine country getaway. Whether you set off on a self-directed tasting adventure or sign up for a guided tour, you can sip your way down Carmel Valley Road, the main artery of the lush countryside. Dine at award-winning restaurants with menus crafted to showcase local vintages. Get active at one of Carmel Valley’s championship golf courses, tennis courts or fitness clubs that offer day use.
Marina is wonderfully diverse, teeming with options for food, culture, and adventure. On top of the bay its scenic trails and seascapes afford endless possibilities for fun and exploration, attracting bicyclists, hang-gliders, paragliders, kite enthusiasts and admirers of Mother Nature. Vast stretches of dunes and rolling hills, ethnic cultures and cuisines, and historic and renowned attractions make Marina a destination to see, stay and play.
Monterey has a robust and remarkable history attracting visitors from around the world since the 1700s. Today, restaurants, boutiques and attractions like the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row and Old Fisherman’s Wharf have helped Monterey continue as a favorite international tourist destination.
What started out as a wharf in 1866 is now a bona fide destination. In addition to a quaint fishing village vibe, the area features several antique shops, art studios, fresh seafood markets and delightful restaurants all within strolling distance of each other. Take a look at a sample Moss Landing itinerary for ideas on how to spend a quiet getaway weekend.
Pacific Grove (P.G. to the locals) has a classic Main Street feel. With one of the oldest continually operating lighthouses in the country and a classic 1932 Neville golf course, Pacific Grove holds many old-fashioned charms. Its status as one of the top Monarch butterfly migrating spots has earned it the nickname of “Butterfly Town, USA.”
Experience the awe-inspiring, harmonious marriage of golf course topography and coastal majesty at Pebble Beach. From the famed 18th hole of Pebble Beach Golf Links® to 17-Mile Drive® and The Lone Cypress™, a visit here will leave you spellbound. Even before the first commercial automobiles came along, historic 17-Mile Drive® was one of Monterey County’s top scenic drives. It began as a carriage road in the early 1880s, and since then has been lauded for its magnificent scenery.
At first blush, agriculture and literature might seem to be an incongruous pair, but not in Salinas. As the county seat of Monterey, it is a vibrant agribusiness hub and is most famous for being the ancestral home of Nobel Prize laureate John Steinbeck and the nationally renowned National Steinbeck Center Museum. Noshing on locally grown delicacies, such as artichokes, at The Steinbeck house—boyhood home of Mr. Steinbeck and now a favorite eatery is a must. Plan ahead to attend one of the many Salinas festivals or events such as the California Rodeo Salinas or the California International Airshow. Traveling by train? Salinas is home to Monterey County’s only Amtrak station.
Sand City is blessed with an abundance of, well, sand. But this isn’t your garden-variety beach sand. We’re referring to spectacular dunes formed during the Pleistocene era at the tail end of the last ice age somewhere in the neighborhood of 6,000 to 15,000 years ago. These dunes are the highest found on California's Central Coast.
Seaside began with the Hotel Del Monte in 1880 and was later used by the military. The former site of Fort Ord is now an up-and-coming destination complete with two previously “off-limits” golf courses, an easy entrance to Fort Ord National Monument and some of the best beach access on California’s Central Coast.
South Monterey County offers wide open spaces, lush scenery and the agricultural bounty of the region. Also known as the "Salad Bowl of the World," South County has a rich heritage of agriculture, growing much of our nation's produce. The riches of South County are showcased daily at local restaurants, farmers markets and wineries along Monterey Wine Trail. Pinnacles National Park and Los Padres National Forest are also in South County, offering spectacular hiking trails with sweeping vistas.

Ile de Re travel guide
Visit Ile de Re (Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France)
Ile de Ré is an island, reached by a long modern bridge, north of La Rochelle in the Charente-Maritime department. Quite a large island - about 30 kilometres long - Ile de Ré is a very popular holiday destination on this sunny coast of western France.
Exploring Ile-de-Ré
Ile-de-Ré is a very different experience for visitors in high-season - when tourists far outnumber residents - and off-season when the island reverts to its traditional activities of salt and oyster production. The island principally attracts families looking to relax in a peaceful environment where the children will enjoy themselves on the sandy beaches and there are picturesque villages for the adults to explore.
The island has two distinct characteristics, with sandy beaches along the south-western coast, and salt and oyster beds along the north-eastern coast. The more important towns and villages are found along the northern edge, and 'seaside resorts' along the southern edge.
To reach Ile-de-Ré you need to cross the toll bridge from just north-west of La Rochelle, which is quite expensive, so you might find you stay on the island more than you expected after you have arrived! All facilities are available on the island including supermarkets and petrol stations and many holidaymakers never feel the need to leave the island at all during a visit.
Ile-de-Ré beaches
Ile-de-Ré has lovely beaches, especially along the southern and western coast. The most popular beaches are in the area between Le Bois-Plage and La Couarde in the centre of the southern coast and along the stretch of coast between Saint-Clément-des-Baleines and Les Portes-en-Ré to the north-west.
- The central part of the island around Le Bois-Plage is closer to the principal village of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, so it is easy to pop across for an ice cream in the harbour from here! Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré is also the principal holiday resort on Ile-de-Ré, has a lively market and an attractive setting partly backed by pine forests.
- The beach at Saint-Clément-des-Baleines is a lovely sandy beach and popular with surfers, but is rather slower to get to. Well worth visiting at least once during your stay here!
Towns and villages
You can visit the town of Saint-Martin-de-Ré and its attractive harbour on the northern side of the island. Saint-Martin-de-Ré is a bustling town during the holiday season and a visit is among the highlights of a trip to the island.
There are also two of the 'most beautiful villages of France' on the island at Ars-en-Ré (to the west of Ile-de-Ré) and La Flotte-en-Ré (to the east). Other villages to discover on Ile-de-Ré include:
- Rivedoux, a resort at the entry to the island
- Loix, on the peninsula along the north-eastern coast
- Saint Clement des Baleines, a small village to the north-west
- Les-Porte-en-Ré, a quiet village at the north-eastern end
- La Couarde sur Mer and Le Bois Plage en Ré, halfway along the south-western shore both with good beaches
- Sainte-Marie, the village to the south as you enter Ile-de-Ré
Other attractions
Other sights on the island, apart from the appeal of the natural environment and beaches, include one of the tallest lighthouses in France at the western tip (the Phare des Baleines, built by Vauban in the 17th century) that can be climbed for far-reaching views out to sea and back across the island itself.
You can also see the ruins of an abbey (the Abbaye des Châteliers) in the south-east near La-Flotte-en-Ré.
Another unusual experience also presents itself - you can explore the salt marshes of the north around Loix by canoe to better appreciate the unusual environment that Ile-de-Ré offers.
Cycling Ile-de-Ré
Ile-de-Ré is a very bike-friendly island, with numerous cycle paths across the island - both along the coast and crossing the island - enabling cyclists to avoid the roads. There are numerous cycle hire shops.
Note however that these cycle paths are very busy with leisure cyclists and are not ideal for 'serious' road bike cyclists - and the roads are rather congested with cars, especially during the peak summer months.
Note: we also saw lots of cars arriving carrying bikes and being stopped by police - be sure your bikes are loaded correctly on your car eg not obstructing the number plates if you don't want to be stopped and forced to unload your car just before you get to your destination!
Many other water sports and boat-trips are also available.
Attractions nearby
Although the Ile-de-Ré itself has all you need for your visit we strongly recommend that you spend a day at La Rochelle , just across the bridge from the island. It is a large town with a great deal of historical interest, a lovely harbour, a popular pedestrianised centre and one of our favourite towns in France!

There are many things to do in Rye – whether you are staying for a weekend or a week. We found that a weekend was the perfect amount of time to explore Rye and surrounding areas, so take a look at our suggestions for things to do below.
We enjoyed visiting the shops – there are plenty of lovely gift shops in Rye with some unique pieces, antique shops, a nice bookshop and a chocolate shop selling handmade chocolate from Rye itself.
As well as exploring the town of Rye, you can also visit Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, managed by the Sussex Wildlife Trust. There is a short circular walk around the reserve, with plenty of bird hides to enjoy the abundance of wildlife and is also pushchair friendly. There are other footpaths you can take around the reserve if you are wanting a longer walk.
Nearby is also the town of Winchelsea , which is very much worth visiting for the pretty houses and the Church of Saint Thomas with its stunning stain glass windows.
For recommendations on places to eat in Rye , view our guide!
Take a stroll down Mermaid Street
Mermaid Street is one of the most photographed streets in Sussex, if not the UK! This cobbled street is well known for being picturesque and it is home to Mermaid Street Inn, a Grade II listed building. It’s definitely worth wandering up this street and soaking up the history!
Visit Lamb House
Lamb House is owned by the National Trust and is a Grade II listed 18th century Georgian House. It has been the home to many famous writers, including the American novelist Henry James and English novelist E. F. Benson. The ground floor of the house and the garden are open Friday – Tuesday.
Address: West St, Rye TN31 7ES
Discover the history of Camber Castle
Camber Castle is located between Rye and Winchelsea and was built by Henry VIII in order to defend the port of Rye. The Castle is now managed by English Heritage and Sussex Wildlife Trust.
The Castle cannot be reached by car, but instead can be reached by footpath which is approximately a one mile walk from Rye. From here you can view the exterior of the Castle – to view the interior of the Castle, you will need to book onto a guided tour.
Visit Rye Castle Museum & Ypres Tower
Rye Castle Museum and the Ypres Tower are located across two museum sites, Rye Castle Museum East Street, and Rye Castle Museum Ypres Tower. These two museum sites are just a short walk across from one another in the historic town of Rye.
There is a small admission charge for the Rye Castle Museum Ypres Tower and there is no admission charge for the Rye Castle Museum East Street, however, donations are gratefully received.
Open 7 days a week throughout the year except on 24th and 25th December
Visit Camber Sands
Sussex is well known for its pebbled beaches, but Camber Sands is a rarity as it consists of over 2 miles of sand dune beach, and is the only sand dune beach in East Sussex.
Camber Sands is only approximately a 10 minute drive from Rye and is well worth a visit for a wander along the beach or a dip in the sea. Dogs are allowed on the beach but there are certain limitations as to which zones they are allowed in between 1 May and 30 September.
Watch a film at Kino
If the weather is a bit rainy, Kino is the perfect spot to enjoy a range of films in their state-of-the-art and cinema. This independent cinema has two screens and it also has a licensed bar and café.
Address: Lion St, Rye, TN31 7LB
