Vouchers are limited to one per household. To be eligible, travellers must stay in paid accommodation including hotels, motels, serviced apartments, caravan parks and campsites for a minimum of two consecutive nights.

Those that secure a voucher can claim expenses incurred during the program travel period of 8 April and 27 May 2022.

The 140,000 vouchers to be released are in addition to the 10,000 travel vouchers made available exclusively to eligible seniors via a ballot last week, with 34,047 eligible applications made.

To date, more than $159 million has been spent under the Victorian travel voucher program on accommodation, tours and experiences across the state.

Victorians will be handed 10,000 new $200 vouchers to help regional hospitality and tourism businesses hit hard by the coronavirus lockdown.

Acting Premier James Merlino announced a $32.2 million package on Sunday to support the tourism industry, including 10,000 new travel vouchers on offer.

“Today we are announcing a $32.2 million package, made up of $16 million to provide a further round of the very popular regional tourism vouchers,” Mr Merlino said.

Regional travel vouchers will be valued at $200 each.

An additional 70,000 unclaimed vouchers from a previous scheme are also on offer.

The new vouchers equate to about $2 million dollars and not the total $16 million specified by the acting premier.

“A $16 million investment will fund a fourth release of popular regional travel vouchers – 10,000 new vouchers and 70,000 vouchers allocated through previous rounds but not claimed,” the Victorian government said in a statement.

“A release date for the vouchers and travel windows will be advised in due course.”

A further $11.8 million will be spent on $4500 payments to businesses, resulting in all Victorian tourism operators receiving a total of $7000 in support during the snap lockdown.

The government has also implemented a $4.4 million package for ski and mountain operators.

Alpine businesses will receive grants of up to $15,000 to help them comply with Covid-19 restrictions.

The travel voucher scheme will be extended by three weeks due to lockdown restrictions.

“Travel vouchers provide a terrific incentive for Victorians to explore their own backyard and we know from recent experience that they will be popular,” Victorian Tourism Minister Martin Pakula said.

The way you board on a major Australian airline is being shaken up, with the overhaul tipped to cut queue time and get you in your seat and in the air faster.

The airport warns that international airlines may abandon us if we don’t keep a rule that lets planes land before curfew ends.

Qantas has announced its biggest airport infrastructure deal in its history, which is set to open up economic growth and tourism in one Australian state.

Senior Victorians encouraged to travel as industry faces last hurdles to COVID recovery

Sunrise on The Razorback on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria.

Tourism operators are reporting their busiest Easter weekend in three years as another round of travel vouchers are being offered to senior Victorians.

Key points:

  • Successful seniors have until May 27 to use the $200 travel vouchers
  • It's the second time vouchers have specifically targetted senior travellers
  • Tourism operators say visitor numbers are no longer what is stopping the industry from recovering from the pandemic

A further 10,000 vouchers worth $200 each are being issued to senior travellers who spend at least $400 on accommodation, tours and experiences across the state.

The Victorian government scheme aims to help the entertainment, dining, and travel industries recover from two years of COVID-19 lockdowns and border closures.

The vouchers will be given to senior Victorians who applied for the last round of the scheme.

Regional Development Minister Mary-Anne Thomas said there were more than 35,000 applications under the first round of the Seniors Travel Voucher scheme in March.

"I would recommend that any senior Victorian who made application through our ballot process for a travel voucher check their email today and see if they are indeed a recipient of these additional vouchers that have been made available," Ms Thomas said.

The government said the Victorian and Seniors Travel Voucher Scheme had so far injected $159 million dollars into the state's economy.

"It's a really great time with school holidays upon us to take the opportunity perhaps to get out with grandchildren and spend some time with them and, importantly, take the opportunity to have a couple of nights away," Ms Thomas said.

Four people look at the Yarra River with the CBD skyline in the background.

Victoria Tourism Industry chief executive Felicia Mariani said offering another round of vouchers to seniors would be particularly helpful as the industry entered the quieter, post-Easter period and headed into winter.

"These vouchers at this point in time are incredibly useful because they really do help to encourage visitation when the industry needs it the most," Ms Mariani said.

Bumper Easter weekend but staff shortages continue to plague the tourism industry

While figures are yet to be official collated, Ms Mariani said Victorian tourism operators were reporting their busiest Easter since the pandemic began.

"Many of the regions that I've been talking to, our members have told us that they've had the best season this year that they'd had since 2019 and, in many cases, they are exceeding performance."

She attributed the recovery to Victorians wanting to travel "in their own backyard" and an influx of interstate visitors attracted by the return of major events.

"But everyone is a bit wary that we are heading into winter and we all know that winter is the hardest time when it comes to what we've experienced with COVID."

Ms Mariani said demand was not an issue for the industry now that there was no longer a threat of lockdowns or snap border closures.

She said finding enough staff continued to be the main hurdle to recording a full recovery.

"We've seen that manifested over the last week with the scenes at both Sydney Airport and Melbourne Airport and this is a chronic problem across the whole country. This is not endemic to Victoria," she said.

Ms Mariani called for the formation of an industry body involving operators who could work with state and federal governments on solutions.

"A lot of the issues to resolve this matter are not levers that the state government can pull," she said.

"They are levers relating to federal government ruling over immigration, over skilled migration visas, over international students, over backpackers and the numbers of those cohorts that are able to enter the country."

Victorian government travel vouchers: how to access $200 holiday at home package.

Alex Chapman

Prince William gives health update on Prince Phillip

Victorians will be offered more travel vouchers to “holiday at home” as part of a state government business support package.

A total of 40,000 vouchers worth $200 will be offered for travel and attractions within Greater Melbourne.

A further 10,000 vouchers worth the same amount will be offered to encourage travel to regional Victoria.

It comes after businesses were dealt another blow with the five-day snap lockdown occurring over a usually busy Valentine’s Day weekend.

Industry Support and Recovery Minister Martin Pakula said the latest instalment of the travel voucher program proved how successful earlier iterations had been.

Trips to Victoria’s Great Ocean Road will be on the cards with another round of travel vouchers announced.

“They are the ones most profoundly affected by the lockdown and they are the ones we are targeting with this support,” Pakula said.

“In total there would have been 200,000 vouchers for accommodation in regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne issued as part of the scheme.”

The vouchers will be available for application in the coming weeks while the ins-and-outs are finalised.

They’re one part of a $143 million support package the government has announced in the wake of the snap lockdown.

How the vouchers work

In earlier editions of the voucher rollout - Victorian adults were able to apply for the vouchers provided they spend at least $400 on accommodation, attractions or tours.

The vouchers are limited to one per household and travellers are required to spend at least two nights in paid accommodation in regional Victoria to qualify.

“We’re not handing out $200 up front, there’s got to be some appropriate rigour in this for the state,” Pakula said in December.

What the vouchers don’t cover

  • Alcohol (unless it is included in a wine or beer-type tasting tour)
  • Food and drinks (except when part of an eligible expense like a winery tour)
  • Personal items
  • Transport costs

Industry Support and Recovery Minister Martin Pakula.

In addition to the vouchers, businesses impacted heaviest by the five-day shutdown are being offered cash grants.

Licensed hospitality venues will automatically receive a $3,000 payment in the coming days.

Eligible businesses in the hospitality, food wholesaling, tourism, events and some retail sectors can apply for a $2,000 grant through the Business Costs Assistance Program.

Accommodation providers are able to apply for a grant of either $2,250 or $4,500, depending on how many cancellations they suffered.

Tourism Boost With Second Round Of Travel Vouchers

The latest round of the Regional Travel Voucher Scheme will open today, with 40,000 travel vouchers for $200 helping boost tourism and support jobs across the state.

The first round of the voucher scheme saw 70,000 vouchers obtained by Victorians planning trips over the Christmas/New Year break.

Preliminary data from the first round of the program showed the most popular destinations were the Mornington Peninsula, Bass Coast, East Gippsland, the Surf Coast and High Country.

Most people claiming for vouchers have spent around $1,000 on accommodation, tours or attractions on their trip – that’s on top of petrol, food, supplies and other purchases, underlying the significance of the tourism industry to local economies.

This round of 40,000 vouchers will be redeemable for travel between 27 January and 1 April. The vouchers will be available from 10:00am today, with successful applicants able to redeem their voucher after they have travelled and spent their money – ensuring cash flows immediately to regional businesses.

A further round of 40,000 vouchers will become available on 30 March for travel between 6 April and 31 May.

To be eligible you must be a Victorian resident aged 18 or over and spend a minimum $400 on accommodation, experiences or tours in regional Victoria during one of the specified periods.

Vouchers are limited to one per household and travellers are required to spend at least two nights in paid accommodation in regional Victoria to qualify for the scheme.

The Regional Travel Voucher Scheme is part of the $465 million Victorian Tourism Recovery Package , which also provides almost $300 million to improve infrastructure in iconic locations including Gippsland, the Great Ocean Road, Wilsons Promontory and the Grampians and invest in new tourism projects.

For more information on the voucher scheme and to apply, go to vic.gov.au/regional-travel-voucher-scheme External Link .

Quotes attributable to Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula

“Victorians love exploring their own back yard and these vouchers make it easier for families to get out into our beautiful regions and enjoy a well-earned break.”

“More people travelling in regional Victoria means more money over the counter for businesses that are recovering after a very difficult 2020, and more jobs for local workers.”

Quote attributable to Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas

“These vouchers mean more Victorians have the chance to see more and do more in regional Victoria this summer – helping local businesses and the communities they support, hit hard by the challenges of 2020.”
