Pilgrims & The Mayflower Cut & Paste Activity Sheet is a great activity for early learners who are needing practice working their little hand muscles. First, your student will cut the 1 st sheet in half down the gray line. Next, overlap and tape the bottom of the left side to the top of the right side (cover the instructions). This will give you a thinner and longer paper to deal with. Next, have your student cut out all 5 of the Mayflower boats. Then, instruct your student to place the ships in order from biggest to smallest. Glue the boats on. Happy learning!

Pilgrims and the Mayflower Read a louds...

This fiction and nonfiction duo is the perfect combination to use for a group read aloud. We started with the Pilgrims nonfiction book, which explained historically what was taking place during that time period. It answered most of those questions you and yours have about the Pilgrims and the Mayflower. Once we finished the Pilgrims , we started the fiction version from Magic Tree House called, Thanksgiving on Thursday.

I gave each of my boys 3 different sized Draw & Write sheets and told them to draw and write about the Mayflower. As you can see, the activity was appropriate for three different grade levels. In this activity, I did not correct their mistakes. I let them write as they saw fit. However, I did make suggestions if I saw a word not capitalized and such. Even in this single activity, you can see each of their strengths and weaknesses. Appropriate assignment for many different types of students.

Map of the Mayflower Voyage Activity

The Mayflower Voyage Map is the perfect geography activity for students 3rd grade through Middle School. In this geography activity, your student will use an atlas or the short video shown to label key continents and locations featured on the map. Not only will your student label, but he will also draw the Mayflower and identify its route. To extend the learning, ask your students questions pertaining to directions. We read Squanto: Friend of  the Pilgrims last year during the fall season. Great read. I remember the discussions we would have about how Squanto must have felt during his years of adventure and heartache. I love our read aloud time because if I am honest, I learn a lot. Squanto was a friend to the Pilgrims, but he was also a slave, captive, and translator depending on the time period. His quest for adventure went awry, for once he finally was able to make it back home, it was no more. His story is touching and memorable. He is an American hero.

To be honest, if you had seen this film, you would not be questioning my choice. This is truly an educational film. The Mayflower Voyage is one of the films in the DVD, This is America, Charlie Brown.

Live Worksheets: Parts of the Mayflower Ship

Live Worksheets are new to me. I did appreciate the interactive ability of the activity. Personally, if your child is not thoroughly into the parts of the boat, this may not be for you. Only one of mine found this live worksheet intriguing. He was interested in the parts of the boat and appreciated knowing what the parts were for. Consequently, he spent time looking those specific terms up. Happy learning!

My eldest read all of the books in the series firsthand, but then I wanted to read them. So, to switch things up a bit, we listened to them in the car via audio. Hi story.com does an excellent job at providing details that are commonly left out of the mainstream story. It makes sure to include the Pilgrims, or Separatists, venture to Holland before their voyage to the New World. My eldest son read about this in his 4th grade Abeka history book last year. So, this was a great review. The articles include details about the Mayflower Compact as well. Great resource. 

The Pilgrims and The Mayflower Craft

I wish I had pictures of all the different crafts we have done over the years, but I don’t. Even though I want to tell you all about them, I know it doesn’t matter in your world! Smile. There are tons of creative Mayflower crafts you could do. This craft was just enough for my student to feel artsy and not too much to overwhelm me at the moment! Even though it is based on a fictional script, this mystery does includes pertinent information to the study of the Mayflower and its passengers. My kids, ranging in age from 3, 5, 7, 8, and 11 all sat in on the read aloud. Worth reading…

Mayflower Compact

In July, 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England. The 102 men, women and children, called the Pilgrims, planned to sail to the New World for a better life. They were called Pilgrims because of their journey to practice their religion free from government control. The Mayflower was accompanied by another ship called the Speedwell . In a short time, the two ships turned back for repairs to the leaky Speedwell. Finally, on September 6, 1620, the Mayflower left England again, this time without the Speedwell .

Ship travel across the ocean was very dangerous in the 1600's. Passengers had to remain in the cargo holds which were damp and wet. People fell overboard or died from sickness. Storms could damage or sink a ship. The Pilgrims did run into a huge storm in the middle of their journey. A huge beam which supported the frame of the ship cracked. However, they were able to use a large screw to get the beam secured and travel on. Many of the passengers were sick, but only one died. A baby was born on the trip, and he was named Oceanus.

Although the ship was originally bound for the colony of Virginia, the passengers knew they didn't have enough food to go that far south. They arrived on Cape Cod , a long-curved peninsula sticking out from present-day Massachusetts on November 11, 1620. They moved on from there to establish a colony named Plymouth . They lived on the ship for several months until shelter could be built. Because the Pilgrims had left England about two months later than they had planned due to the problems with the Speedwell, they were not prepared to have to build in the wet, cold winter. During that first winter over half the colonists died. They finally did build shelters for those still alive. The Mayflower left in April to go back to England.

Some of the people were called Separatists because they had chosen to separate themselves from the official Church of England. Others remained true to the Church of England. When the colonists had left England, they had received permission from the King of England to settle on land farther south near the mouth of the Hudson River in modern-day New York. This was part of the Virginia colony. Because they settled farther north, they had to get a new patent, or permission agreement, to remain where they had landed.

On the day they landed on Cape Cod, on the ship, all of the adult men signed a document to establish the rules for an orderly way of living in the new settlement. This was called the Mayflower Compact . A compact is an agreement. It is thought by later Americans to have had an influence on the writing of the Declaration of Independence. The original document is not in existence, but a copy was found in a brochure written soon after. In 1669, Nathaniel Morton included the text in his book, New England's Memorial . There was a list of possible signers although no list had appeared before that time. The area where the Pilgrims landed was part of what was later named New England. Today it includes 6 states: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

In the Mayflower Compact, the writers indicated that they were loyal subjects of King James of England. They said that they had traveled to the northern parts of Virginia to found a colony to give glory to God and the king. They agreed to join together in one body to make laws for the good of the colony and pledged to obey whatever laws they decided to write.

The Mayflower Compact is important because it was the first establishment of a democratic form of government in the colonies.

Mayflower Compact

With our Mayflower Compact lesson plan, students learn about the Mayflower Compact, including what it was and why it was significant. Students also learn about the Pilgrims and their trip on the Mayflower to provide context for this lesson.

Included with this lesson are some adjustments or additions that you can make if you’d like, found in the “Options for Lesson” section of the Classroom Procedure page. One of the optional additions to this lesson is to form the class into two groups, Saints and Strangers, and have them discuss, debate, and write a new Mayflower Compact.

Lesson Objectives and Overview: Mayflower Compact introduces students to the Mayflower Compact, which many historians believe is the precursor to the Declaration of Independence and the first document establishing democracy in the world. The lesson includes a summary of the Pilgrims trip on the Mayflower from Europe to the New World as well. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to define the Mayflower Compact, explain its purpose and its future impact on democracy in the United States. This lesson is for students in 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade.

Classroom Procedure

Every lesson plan provides you with a classroom procedure page that outlines a step-by-step guide to follow. You do not have to follow the guide exactly. The guide helps you organize the lesson and details when to hand out worksheets. It also lists information in the orange box that you might find useful. You will find the lesson objectives, state standards, and number of class sessions the lesson should take to complete in this area. In addition, it describes the supplies you will need as well as what and how you need to prepare beforehand.

Options for Lesson

Included with this lesson is an “Options for Lesson” section that lists a number of suggestions for activities to add to the lesson or substitutions for the ones already in the lesson. One optional addition to this lesson is to have your s tudents compare the compact to the U.S. Constitution. You can also have them  memorize the Mayflower Compact. To add additional context to the lesson, you can discuss the impact religion may have had on settlements in America, including the original colonies. You could plan a Mayflower Compact Day on November 9th. You could also have your students list the advantages and disadvantages of the Compact for the “saints” and for the “strangers”. Finally, you could form the class into two groups, Saints and Strangers, and have them discuss, debate, and write a new Mayflower Compact.

MAYFLOWER COMPACT LESSON PLAN CONTENT PAGES

Voyage to america.

The Mayflower Compact lesson plan includes three content pages. The lesson begins by asking students why they might want to leave their homes and start a new life. There are many possible reasons why someone would want to do this. Today, you could get on an airplane and arrive at your new destination very quickly. You could get on a ship and be there in a few weeks. However, in England in the 1600s, some people decided to leave Europe for North America. Today, we call these people the Pilgrims.

102 people traveled on a ship called the Mayflower. Two groups traveled on this ship, known as the Saints and the Strangers. The Saints, who we call the Pilgrims today, were a religious group often called the Separatists. They wanted to separate from the Church of England. King James, the leader of England at this time, threatened the Puritans and they first traveled to Holland to practice their religion.

They spent 11 years in Holland before deciding to travel to North America to have religious freedom. There were 41 Saints. Joining them were 51 Strangers, who did not seek religious freedom. Instead, they wanted to make money. They included skilled workers, like tradesmen, craftsmen, laborers, indentured servants, and orphans. There were children on the ship, including eleven girls and nine boys. In addition to these two groups, there were about 25 crewmembers and live animals like dogs, sheep, goats, and poultry.

These two groups differed in many ways. They had different levels of education, religious beliefs, social structures, political views, and more. But they did have the 66 day trip on the Mayflower in common.

Originally, the Pilgrims were planning to make the journey on a ship called the Speedwell, but the ship needed repairs so the two groups ended up on the same ship. The trip was 3,000 miles and took 66 days and the two groups experienced a lot of tension during the journey.

The Strangers thought that the Saints were sanctimonious, or overly holy and self-righteous. The crew also found the Saints annoying. The Strangers provoked the Saints because they did not want to follow their beliefs. The Saints, on the other hand, wanted all of the passengers to follow their religious practices. Tensions remained high between the two groups throughout the journey.

The living conditions on the ship were also not great. There was little space and little privacy. The first half of the journey went well, but there were many storms and rough seas during the second half. This nearly caused the Mayflower to shipwreck.

Two people died on the journey, and one was born. People suffered from diseases and seasickness. It was not a pleasant journey for anyone. However, they did realize that they needed to come together before they arrived in North America to avoid conflict once they were there. They decided to create an agreement about their future life together.

Coming Together

These people didn’t know anything about the new and unexplored land they were traveling to. They didn’t know what natural resources they would have, what the climate would be like, who could already be there, and how safe they would be once they got there. There was no law, government, or shelter waiting for them. Based on these facts, they decided to come together to form a temporary government.

Some of the Strangers wanted a life without rules or laws, but realized that working together with the Saints was a smarter plan. The two groups decided to create a covenant, or agreement, before arriving.

They had no king, president, or leader, so they decided to use the pact as a binding agreement between the groups. This meant that no one could break it. It was a formal, signed document that would help the settlers govern themselves. They called this document the Mayflower Compact.

The Mayflower arrived in Cape Cod, in a town now called Provincetown, on November 9, 1620. Before they left the ship, however, 41 men signed the Mayflower Compact on November 11th. This established their temporary government.

The lesson then includes the text of the Mayflower Compact, which is three paragraphs long. A man named William Braford, who had a university education, likely wrote the document. It was short and few people had any issues with it. By signing the document, they established a self-government, created order, and helped the Pilgrims survive the start of their time in North America. This was the first example of a New World constitution, and we still view it as the cornerstone of democracy, the American government, and the U.S. Constitution.

The Pilgrims wrote the document by and for themselves. This foreshadows the principle that government should be by, of, and for the people. This is one of the main ideas of democracy today.

MAYFLOWER COMPACT LESSON PLAN WORKSHEETS

The Mayflower Compact lesson plan includes three worksheets: an activity worksheet, a practice worksheet, and a homework assignment. You can refer to the guide on the classroom procedure page to determine when to hand out each worksheet.

MAYFLOWER COMPACT ACTIVITY WORKSHEET

Students will work with a partner to complete the activity worksheet. Each pair will review and discuss eight questions related to the text of the Mayflower Compact, writing out their answers on the worksheet. They will also share some of their responses with the class.

MATCHING PRACTICE WORKSHEET

The practice worksheet asks students to first match terms with their definitions. They will then answer ten questions about the lesson material.

REWRITING HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT

For the homework assignment, students will first read the text of the Mayflower Compact and rewrite it in “regular” English. They will then review the text again and will determine what was odd about where the Pilgrims actually landed and where they wanted to land in America. Finally, students will imagine that they and their classmates need to leave the country and establish a new colony on an uninhabited island. They will list 10 basic rights that they would use to protect the citizens of the colony.

Worksheet Answer Keys

This lesson plan includes answer keys for the activity worksheet, the practice worksheet, and the homework assignment. If you choose to administer the lesson pages to your students via PDF, you will need to save a new file that omits these pages. Otherwise, you can simply print out the applicable pages and keep these as reference for yourself when grading assignments.

Mayflower Activities

What do you know about the Mayflower? All I learned growing up was that it is the ship which brought the pilgrims over from England in 1620. We read a few books about the ship that delivered the Pilgrims to America. I don’t remember really learning of the importance of it.

The Mayflower was the transportation that began the change in our country. It delivered the Pilgrims to find religious freedom. One of the first government documents was created aboard this ship.

What is National Mayflower Day?

Mayflower Day celebrates the day the ship set sail from Plymouth, England on its voyage to America in 1620. It wasn’t until 66 days later that the ship landed on the shore of Massachusetts. On November 21st of the same year,  it unloaded 102 passengers on a new land.

However, before anyone went ashore, Pilgrim leaders Bradford and William Brewster created the Mayflower Compact, a document that was the beginning framework of the United States government.

If you’re studying the history of the United States this year, don’t forget about Mayflower Day. Use this opportunity to teach your children about this special ship before Thanksgiving time.
