A unique cruise choice on the Nile, the Steamship Sudan is the most peaceful way to travel on the river. Please note that the majority of guests and crew will be French-speaking, although an English-speaking guide will be provided.

Built in 1885, for King Fouad, this steamship has had many eminent guests over the years. Agatha Christie was inspired to write Death on the Nile after travelling on the boat and decades later, the S/S Sudan provided the set for many of the film’s scenes.

With just 23 cabins, five of which are suites, there is a cosy intimate air on board. Each cabin contains period furniture (including wall-mounted telephones and brass bedsteads) and is accessed via the promenade deck.

Although there is no pool on board, there is a sun deck where you can relax. To add to the calm atmosphere, the Sudan is propelled by a hybrid diesel/steam engine, resulting in a quieter and more energy-efficient journey.

For those interested, the original workings, such as the pistons and paddle wheels, can still be seen, and the staff may allow you to visit the engine room.

Breakfasts and lunches are open buffet meals, whilst dinner is usually a set, four-course meal.

Agatha Christie Nile Cruise Tour – All Aboard the Steam Ship Sudan Used in Death on the Nile!

Did you know that you can follow in Agatha Christie’s footsteps by stepping aboard the Steam Ship Sudan in Egypt?

The oldest steamboat still running on the Nile today. You really can take your very own Agatha Christie Nile Cruise!

The queen of crime herself stepped aboard the Steam Ship Sudan to sail down the Nile. She travelled throughout Egypt in 1937. This cruise, and the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan , inspired her to write her famous novel ‘Death on the Nile’ .

Decades later, it has been the star attraction and filming location for scenes in modern film and TV adaptations. Most famously,  Death on the Nile  in 2004 starring David Suchet

During my Nile cruise aboard the MS Mayfair from Aswan to Luxor , I spotted the SS Sudan pulling into Kom Ombo port. I instantly recognised it and was dying to take a look around. My tour guide, Eid, used to work on board the ship and knew it well.

He also knew the manager of the Steam Ship Sudan and managed to score me a free tour! A.K.A I got to snoop around the ship for a few hours. I was over the moon with excitement!

It felt surreal to wander around the filming location of a movie I have been watching for years. Here’s a tour of Agatha Christie’s Nile Cruise, the boat used in Death on the Nile.

Agatha Christie Nile Cruise: The history of Steam Ship Sudan

The Steam Ship Sudan, or SS Sudan, is an old steamer Nile cruise ship that was built for King Fouad in 1885.

A few years before this, the legendary entrepreneur Thomas Cook acquires a permit for tourist Nile sailing. He then accepts eager tourists aboard his first Nile Cruise for Egyptian tourism in 1876. As well as Nile cruises, Cook also built the Old Winter Palace in Luxor and the Old Cataract in Aswan.

In 1911, he acquires the Steam Ship Sudan and Arabia  to advertise faster cruise ships. These boats cut down the tour from Cairo to just 20 days and so more tourists were eager to step aboard.

By 1935, the Steam Ship had reached a golden age of tourism and in 1937, Agatha Christie steps onboard.

No one ever knows whether Agatha Christie intended to stay so long in Egypt. But, what we do know is that she remained here for most of that year. The SS Sudan and the Old Cataract were her muses for writing Death on the Nile.

In World War II, Egyptian tourism came to a halt. This also meant that the Steam Ship Sudan was abandoned and locked away for over 50 years.

In 2000, directors of  Voyageurs du Monde   bought the steamer and revived the SS Sudan to its former glory. It set sail once more in 2006 and has welcomed tourists on board ever since.

What films and shows have been filmed onboard the Steam Ship Sudan?

The famous ‘Karnak’ steamer which Agatha Christie wrote about in her novel, was based on the Steam Ship Sudan after her own cruise.

I always thought that the 1978 version of Death on the Nile was filmed onboard the Steam Ship Sudan. But, I later found out that four weeks of filming took place aboard the SS Memnon. This ship is still running as part of Seti Cruises, but only for private functions.

The SS Sudan at the time was still locked away. But, I’m sure if it was available they would have used it for the movie.

The 2004 version of Death on the Nile , starring David Suchet, was filmed on board this very ship.

There is also a new adaptation with Sir Kenneth Branagh due to be released soon and I wonder if the SS Sudan will be a filming location too!

Welcome aboard the Steam Ship Sudan

As soon as I waited on the dock at Luxor and saw the SS Sudan pull in, I felt butterflies. Seeing this ship in person and knowing I was going to come aboard was a strange feeling.

The fact that Agatha Christie would have been on this boat made me have a serious fan girl moment!

I walked down the steps and the gangplank was lifted, allowing me to come aboard and I was shown to the bar. It was a hot day in Luxor, so I was thankful for the cooling temperature of the drawing-room.

No sooner had I sat down, a kind waiter in full livery and tarboush, served me a refreshing glass of hibiscus tea.

I could see the residents reading from the ship library,  which had copious copies of Death on the Nile to choose. Some of the patrons were playing board games. It was very relaxing.

The lounge and sun deck onboard the SS Sudan

Unfortunately, when I came on board the boat was at full occupancy. So, I couldn’t check out any of the cabins for myself.

But, from seeing the Death on the Nile movie and the Steam Ship Sudan website; they all look vintage boutique!

Some of the rooms have brass and antique gold wicker bed frames, and luxe deco bedding and interiors.

There are 5 suites and 18 cabins onboard the Sudan. You can even stay in the Agatha Christie Suite and a cabin dedicated to her famous detective, Hercule Poirot.

agatha christie suite steam ship sudan

Steam Ship Sudan cabins

As we wound our way up the winding wooden staircase and over the wooden floorboards, it felt surreal. To walk along this steamer which I had seen on TV was just spectacular.

We made our way up to the lounge deck on top of the boat and found a beautiful place to pass the time and watch the world go by.

There were lounge chairs, sunbeds, tables to play chess. It really looked like the ideal place to relax with a drink and see the sights of the Nile.

I could only imagine what it would be like to catch the sunset from here. Ah, I can only dream!

A look inside the SS Sudan engine room

I always love poking my nose in to see the captain’s quarters of a ship. There’s something so interesting about modern sailing.

There’s a chair, navigation equipment and lots of shiny buttons which I didn’t understand (but so tempting to push)! Also, a phone to make calls.

You won’t find the stereotypical ships wheel like in the olden days now, although you can find it outside for show.

agatha christie nile cruise steam ship sudan death on the nile

The engine room was also fascinating. Unlike modern cruise ships, steamships work with an engine that makes a chugging sound. You can watch it spin in the engine room.

My guide told me that it’s quite loud at night, so you can hear it while you sleep. I’m quite a light sleeper myself. But, if I was on this ship I think it would be worth it!

How much is the Agatha Christie Nile Cruise?

The Steam Ship Sudan runs two types of cruises. What’s great about these is they stop at more sites than most of the regular Nile Cruises including Dendera and Abydos (which usually cost extra);

  • The Dynastic – a 6 days, 5 night river cruise that runs from Luxor down to Aswan.
  • Eternal River – a 6 days, 5 night cruise from Aswan to Luxor.

Steam Ship Sudan cruise prices

Both cruises have the same rates;

  • From Oct – Apr – 2400 -2700 Euros depending on your cabin.
  • From May – Sept – 1900 – 2200 Euros depending on your cabin.

Special occasions and holidays may cost more.

You can also rent this boat out for special occasions. The captain told me about a murder mystery evening that was held onboard. I think I would die of excitement if I got to attend!

Do you love Agatha Christie?

If you’re gaga about Agatha Christie too and wanted to read more about her travels in Egypt. I have a few posts that I think you might love all about the hotels that she stayed in here on her travels.

You can read about the Old Winter Palace in Luxor and discover all the Agatha Christie secrets you can find within the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan.

All aboard the Steam Ship Sudan

If you’re a fan of the novel or movie  Death on the Nile and the queen of crime herself, then a trip on the Steam Ship Sudan is the perfect choice for you.

Don’t miss out on travelling back in time with the Agatha Christie Nile Cruise and come aboard the Steam Ship Sudan; the oldest ship still actively running on the Nile.

Wonderful blog again. The real question though is which would you recommend - the SS Sudan or MS Mayfair?

Sophie Pearce

Hi Adrian, it really depends on your budget! I found the MS Mayfair perfect and it's a fraction of the cost. But, if money is no object the SS Sudan would be a bucket list splurge! Sophie x

Wednesday 4th of May 2022

Wow what an amazing review! I’m really looking forward to do this! Could you tell me how much would it cost me to do the cruise in the Agatha Christie cabin??

Hi Dan, it will probably depend on the season you go but the Agatha Christie Suite will most likely cost you around 4,000 Euro for the week! It is not cheap! I would contact the SS Sudan team at Original Travel to ask for specific rates. https://www.originaltravel.co.uk/place/steam-ship-sudan-holidays Hope this helps, Sophie x

1984 i motored down to Aswan on a then 100 odd year gaff rig schooner Boston storm built in Boston UK as a pilot cutter....at Luxor we tied up alongside the paddle steamer for a few weeks before making our way down to komombo and Aswan .

Hi Thomas! Wow, that sounds like such an adventure. I bet travelling to Egypt must have been so different back then! I would have loved to have seen it before all the attractions were overloaded with security checks haha :) Sounds like you made some memories of a lifetime! Thanks for sharing, Sophie x

Tuesday 15th of June 2021

Hey Sophie, thank you very much indeed, that helps! By the way, I just want to say thank you for keeping this blog. I really love the way you write about each place you visit, especially how you cover the small details that other bloggers tend to overlook. I also share your passion for visiting places where authors have left their mark and hotels with history and character. Egypt is on my bucketlist and given that Covid 19 has put a stop to travelling for now, your blog is very much a way for me to live vicariously as well as build up my research for a seamless trip.

Sunday 27th of June 2021

Hi there, ah thank you! I do try to write in detail as I like to plan trips and find those were the questions I Was asking! So I put them in the post as I thought it could be useful :) Oh I hope you can visit Egypt, it really is the most magical place! Fingers crossed for you! Sophie x

Cruise the Nile in Elegance Aboard the Steam Ship Sudan

To celebrate the launch of the new  Original Travel website , a portfolio of original tailor-made itineraries, we have picked one of their most iconic luxury experiences – a trip down the Nile aboard the Steam Ship Sudan.

In 1933 Agatha Christie took a trip onboard the Steam Ship Sudan while travelling through Egypt with her archaeologist husband. So taken was she by her experience on the vessel, built in 1885, that it inspired her to pen the iconic suspense novel: Death on the Nile. Consequently, some scenes from the 1978 film adaptation of the book, were filmed aboard this very ship. She may have become a – literal – vehicle for a whodunnit saga, but this steamer has many more tales to tell.

sudan river cruise

Regal elegance meets comfort

The first glimpse of this paddle steamer, evocative of the Belle Époque era, takes your breath away. Over a century-old, she exudes turn of the century North African charm with her wood panelling, gilt and copper ornate bed frames parquet floors and period features. Yet the antique elements are balanced with plenty of plush and modern grand hotel comforts. There are five suites to choose from – including the Agatha Christie Suite and Queen Victoria Suite. Or there are the 18 comfortable and airy cabins, all of which are named after significant contributors to the ship’s history and have direct access to the promenade area.

sudan river cruise

Spread across two sumptuous decks, the private and public areas have air conditioning providing a welcome respite after warm days exploring the wonders ashore in upper Egypt. It’s an intimate setting with a maximum of 67 passengers on board at any one time and 18 crew. And as this is steam powered travel, not only is it a more environmentally friendly option than a cruise liner, it offers a quiet serenity away from rumbling engines.

A ship fit for a king

The decor is soothing and light, with accents of bright colours and a nod to times past. With panoramic river views from the cabins and suites, the constantly changing, stunning and fascinating vistas bring endless variety and intrigue. It’s easy to imagine yourself transported back in time as you take a stroll on the teak, or sip on punch under a parasol enjoying the breeze that’s created as the ship steams gently toward your next port of call. To help you feel enveloped in this sense of history, the walls are adorned with historic photographs of previous passengers, including King Farouk.

sudan river cruise

And let’s not forget the food, the highlight of any a voyage. While you may be dining on water you’ll still get to savour the favours of local cuisine, with fine Egyptian fare created in the galley. Daily stops ensure the freshest ingredients can be collected and prepared to make up sophisticated dishes. Depending on the day’s travel arrangements, some meals are taken buffet-style (usually breakfast and lunch), while others are more formal silver service four-course banquets. Tables are laid with crisp white tablecloths and candelabras, while the warm and welcoming staff provide first-class attentive service. Mealtime onboard the  Steam Ship Sudan is always a refined affair, often followed by a classic tipple in the bar over a game of cards.

sudan river cruise

Ancient history without the hassle

A huge benefit of cruising on a steamship with little draft is that unlike larger cruise liners and ferries, she can access relatively shallow waters. This opens up the less-travelled stretches of the Nile, adding to the exoticism of the journey. The ship operates five-night adventures from Luxor to Assouan, with two itineraries: The Dynastic and Eternal River. Each takes in major archaeological sites such as the Temple of Luxor, the holy city of Abydos, the Theban Necropolis, Valley of the Queens and the Temple of Edfu. At every port of call, expert guides are on hand to lead groups with their wealth of knowledge and passion for ancient Egyptian history.

sudan river cruise

Sunset is arguably the most magical time of day on here and often incurs a much-needed rest after a day of exploring in vehicles, on foot – and even occasionally by camel. Some parts of the itineraries allow for time ashore in the evenings, but as evening falls, nothing beats relaxing with a sundowner on the deck as this ancient-meets-modern world, passes by before your eyes.

A view from the bridge

Sightseeing on the water at a leisurely few knots gives a particularly unique vantage point – you pass sights and gain perspective that would be impossible from the land. It is the best of both worlds though. Never far from the next stop, you don’t need sea legs or sickness tablets for this kind of a watery journey. It’s easy, laid back, yet utterly refined. And as the ship is your transport, as well as a fine floating hotel, the time spent on the road is minimal in comparison to the endless dusty miles and multiple hotel rooms you’d need to see so much overland. But even if you didn’t put a toe on land, a trip on the  Steam Ship Sudan would still be a truly unforgettable journey.

Egypt has year-round sun, and almost no rain. Daytime temperatures range from pleasantly warm in the winter to very hot in the summer. Northerly cities such as Cairo and Alexandria are generally about 5ºC cooler than southerly areas such as Aswan and Abu Simbel.

Departures are from Luxor or Aswan. To reach the docks, we recommend flying from Cairo to either destination. To Luxor it's an hour, and to Aswan it's 90 minutes. There are several daily flights, so there's no need to stay overnight in Cairo unless you wish to.

Everything You Need To Know Before Embarking On A Nile River Cruise

A Nile cruise is on nearly every international traveler’s wish list. The wonders of ancient Egypt go way beyond the pyramids and the sphinx, with countless treasures lying further south, a stretch away from Cairo, lying either within reach of Luxor or Aswan, which is why most people opt for a cruise between the two cities, stopping off at the most important sites along the way.

Having visited Cairo before, a Nile cruise had been on my wish list for years until I finally found the right ship, which I knew I would enjoy, together with the right duration of cruise and itinerary to suit me. It took a lot of research and some luck to chance upon the cruise that was right for me: very small, few people, historic connections, a touch of the glamor of 1920s- and 1930s-style travel, and plenty of class. I found my ideal cruise on the SS Sudan , the last true paddle steamer on the Nile, the one Agatha Christie sailed on and where she wrote Death on the Nile — and where the subsequent movies were filmed. Small enough to allow for privacy, large enough for comfort, with a five-night, six-day itinerary between Luxor and Aswan.

But what is perfect for me isn’t necessarily perfect for everybody else. Some might want a pool, a shop, more people to socialize with, or maybe more modern cabins, and probably going from Aswan to Luxor, or even cruising the whole way from Cairo to Aswan. Timing is crucial as well, as is deciding what to do at either end. There are many things to consider before embarking on a Nile cruise, so, here I have listed a few points to mull over and research before you book yourself that trip of a lifetime.

Up Or Down River?

Let’s start with some nomenclature you will need to go along the right route: Cruising up the Nile means you are going south, toward the source of the Nile, which, by the way, I recently discovered in Uganda. Cruising down the Nile is sailing toward the estuary in the Mediterranean. But, just to confuse things, Upper Egypt is in fact southern Egypt, while Lower Egypt is in the north, by the coast.

Most Nile Cruises, except for the ones setting off from Cairo and cruising all the way up the Nile, actually sail only in Upper Egypt, between Luxor and Aswan.

I am unsure about what the statistics are when it comes to preferences, but all the cruise ships in Upper Egypt either cruise from Luxor to Aswan or from Aswan to Luxor. Both Luxor and Aswan have airports you can fly into from Cairo, the main international airport in Egypt, so the choice really is yours. That said, personally, I felt that going from Luxor to Aswan was my preferred option simply because — in my mind — Aswan is so much prettier than Luxor. And from Aswan, you can travel to the temples in Abu Simbel, leaving you with the best bit at the end of your journey. But many people would argue the opposite and there really is no right or wrong.

Hotels At Either End

While many travelers, mostly those who are time poor, head straight from the airport to the cruise ship and, once docked after the cruise, fly straight back out again, I would like to plead for a night or two at either end. Not only does it give you the option of overcoming any jet lag or travel fatigue, but also there are some lovely historic hotels that are worth spending a night in. In Luxor, the famous Winter Palace is a historic hotel, a little frayed around the edges, but with a fabulous garden and a pedigree of former guests that is hard to beat. The only place that can beat the guest list of the Winter Palace is the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan where Agatha Christie stayed at the end of her cruise, and you can take a tour through numerous suites named after illustrious guests who stayed there over the last century. And the hotel offers rooms with some of my favorite views in the world .

What Kind Of Boat

There are essentially four types of boats on the Nile that can take you from A to B. There are modern cruise ships, relatively small when compared to ocean-going cruise ships with around 50 cabins, but many with swimming pools, cabins with balconies, and shops and restaurants on board. There is the SS Sudan , alone in its class, without amenities such as pools or shops, but with only five suites and 18 cabins, plus a superb sundeck, a bar, and a restaurant. Then there are the dahabiyas, beautiful boats with a sail at either end — and even more private with many only catering to around 12 passengers. The dahabiyas come without engines, but often have a tugboat for added speed, and offer the most tranquil and secluded cruises. Lastly, there are the feluccas, small sailboats, where in some cases you can spend one night on board, but generally, these lovely and traditional sailboats are only used for day trips.

Where Are The Stops?

Between the most popular cruise harbors of Luxor and Aswan lie the most amazing sights, most of which are taken in by all the various cruises, because, after all, that is why everybody is there. The main stops are Qena, a little downriver from Luxor, with the Dendera and Abydos temples; Luxor , with the various valleys of tombs; Edfu with the fabulous Kom Ombo temple; and lastly Aswan, with a visit to Philae. On a five-night cruise upriver (so going south), you will stay overnight in Qena, Luxor, Edfu, and two nights in Aswan.

Length Of Cruise

Most cruises between Luxor and Aswan take between three and seven days, the shorter ones skipping Qena and only staying one night in Aswan, the longer ones adding extra nights, usually in Luxor.

If you are lucky enough to have the time to sail from Cairo to Aswan , the itinerary takes a minimum of 11 nights, but more often than not 14 nights, with sightseeing in Cairo included, usually reaching Luxor on Day 11. Despite the current of the Nile, which is evident but quite slow, the cruises up or down the river take the same amount of time.

When Best To Travel

The best time to visit Upper (southern) Egypt is between October and April. That said, I went at the end of October, and the temperatures were still in the 90s Fahrenheit, making sightseeing a bit of an exhausting undertaking. In the summer, these temperatures are much, much worse, so travel then is best avoided. In December and January, the coldest months, the temperatures hover around the mid-70s Fahrenheit. As for rain, the rainy season is between October and April, with a negligible spike at less than an inch of rain in October.

What You Must Pack

Even if yours is a fancy cruise, pack light, pack layers, and pack sensible shoes. It will be hot and sandy whenever you go exploring. In the Valley of the Kings, for example, there is much sand, no shade, and plenty of stairs and steps to conquer, so light clothing but good shoes that keep you firmly on the ground are useful. Bring a light cover for the evening and something nice for the boat. A clothes brush to get the sand and dust off you at the end of the outing and a handheld fan to bring you some air when it gets warm are essential. And, if you like a tipple or two, know that in Egypt imported wine and champagne are extortionately expensive, so, get your full allowance in the duty-free shop and enjoy along the way.

What To Do Before (Or After)

Chances are that you will fly into Cairo, and unless you are embarking in Cairo, some sightseeing is a must. Allow at least two extra days to see the main sights before heading south. And once you are in the south, note that all cruise ships stop at Aswan because of the dams. If you want to see Abu Simbel, you can either fly from Aswan to Abu Simbel or take a tour either by bus or private car , but you will need to book the car in advance. This is because the tourist road caravan sets off first thing in the morning and is escorted by police all the way between Aswan and Abu Simbel because of potential bandits, and all travelers need to be registered and accounted for by the day before at the latest.

What To Read And Watch About The Nile

To get you in the mood and keep you going while you’re there, here are some books and films set in exactly the places you will be visiting, so you can go, “Oh, I know that place!” as you read or watch.

  • Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
  • The films Death on the Nile from 1978 with Peter Ustinov , 2004 with David Suchet , and 2022 with Kenneth Branagh
  • Some very light but fun mysteries by Elizabeth Peters , with lots of places to be recognized
  • The superb old travel book by Amelia B. Edwards A Thousand Miles up the Nile , first published in 1877

One fantastic historical TV series presented by Bettany Hughes is entitled The Nile and is full of information, making for perfect viewing before and after your trip.

Pro Tip: In many places, you will either have to pay for a photography permit, or, at times, won’t be able to take photographs. But don’t let that stop you from carrying your camera everywhere with you!

Nile cruising on the ship that inspired Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile

Author: Ulrike Lemmin-Woolfrey

Published on: 17 February 2022

Updated on: 11 May 2022

Nile cruise holidays have long been a popular option for those keen to explore multiple Egypt hotspots. With the new Death on the Nile film now out, what's a Nile river cruise like?

For years I had been wanting to cruise down the Nile. Not with hundreds of other passengers on a glass-encased, modern ship, but in style and with as few fellow passengers as possible.

It was reading an interview with celebrity interior designer Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen, who cruised down the Nile with his wife for their 30th wedding anniversary, that showed me the way. I finally had the name of a ship that might just tick all the right boxes: the SS Sudan.

Researching the SS Sudan further revived memories of the book Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie, the subsequent 1978 film version with Peter Ustinov as detective Hercule Poirot, and the 2004 TV version with David Suchet, all of which I loved.

A new film version of Death on the Nile has hit the cinema screens this month starring Kenneth Branagh as Poirot, catering to a hungry audience who love a bit of sleuthing with a setting that is exotic as well as stylish.

The books and three films have one thing in common: the Steamship Sudan. This is the ship on which Agatha Christie sailed in 1933 and started on her book, while the three movies were filmed onboard the SS Sudan, called SS Karnak in the book, and even if the films took a few directorial liberties, it is easily recognisable.

Saga announces new river cruise ship for 2025

American cruise lines to sail out of washington dc, riverside luxury cruises to launch third ship in march, tui river cruises announces first new-build ship, riviera travel ‘determined to deliver’ on new sustainability plan, edwina lonsdale on why river cruises rock, uniworld announces new ‘bucket-list’ itineraries, how to choose your excursions on an avalon waterways' river cruise, a-rosa becomes first river cruise line to offer swimming lessons, amawaterways to operate two ships on magdalena river.

Today, the ship still encompasses the glamour of travel in the 1930s, with wood-panelled cabins opening onto a wide teak veranda, fluttering white canvas shades, gleaming brass instruments, comfortable wicker chairs, and a ratio of 63 crew to roughly 45 passengers.

The SS Sudan is one of two steamships that Thomas Cook used to ferry rich travellers between Luxor and Aswan in the early 1900s, when archaeologists making spectacular discoveries of ancient Egyptian treasures along the Nile, drew wealthy tourists to Egypt on the so-called Grand Tour, which was en vogue then.

With the Old Winter Palace Hotel in Luxor and the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan and the SS Sudan in between, luxury could be assured at every step, forgoing most of the climatic and logistic hardships that tourists potentially faced in Egypt in those days.

After a few gentle restorations and modernisations over the years, the SS Sudan remains the only true and original paddle steamer on the Nile and keeps up the old-world glamour of travel along its trips up and down the Nile.

Embarking on the SS Sudan, now owned by a French travel company, I caught a first glimpse of my fellow passengers. I was joined by passengers from France, Switzerland, the UK and Spain.

There were few enough guests to allow the feeling of exclusivity, but enough to make the journey interesting. A six-day, five-night trip lay ahead, with scheduled excursions, meals on board, even a screening of the Death on the Nile movie on the itinerary, in the very bar used as a murder scene in the film.

The five suites and 18 cabins on the ship are all on one level, above the restaurant and bar, and below the sundeck, with the superior suites at the bow and stern. The cabins are comfortable, with either double or twin beds, armchairs, a minibar, wardrobes, and ensuite bathrooms.

Outside of each cabin there are a table and wicker chairs, but the best views are had from the sundeck, where wide armchairs and sun loungers invite you to relax and just watch the life on the banks of the Nile go by.

Each day offers an excursion, ranging from Qena, a little downriver from Luxor and home to the temples of Abydos and Dendera, to a return to Luxor for the night and a visit to the Valley of the Kings, Queens, Nobles, and Artisans the next morning.

Further stops upriver are Edfu and the temple of Kom Ombo, and Aswan, with a visit to the fantastic island temple of Philae. And while each day offers an excursion, so does each day bring a few hours of daylight sailing, allowing passengers to not only enjoy time on the ship and the views along the river but also see the spectacular sunsets on the west bank of the Nile.

The excursions to the ancient Egyptian temples are simply awesome, in the literal sense: Stunning, historic, larger-than-life reminders of a mighty civilisation. And, with a guide catering to each of the small groups brought together by their preferred language staying on board throughout the journey and leading all the visits with your group, you learn an incredible amount.

But, despite the wonders of ancient Egypt’s being the reason for all of us being onboard, at times I felt quite ‘templed out’, to coin a phrase. Those peaceful hours of sailing offered a much-needed respite from an onslaught of mind-boggling information and breath-taking sights every day.

It was the SS Sudan itself with its working steam chimney and the ever-turning paddle wheel, the attention of the staff, the wonderful meals on board, and the afternoon tea with freshly baked sweet delights that made sitting on the decks during sailing such a treat.

The books I had brought along, which I had envisaged myself reading sitting on the wicker chair outside my cabin, remained unopened, instead, I drank in the sights along the Nile and the life going on alongside it.

I lost count how many children I waved to, how many donkeys and water buffalos I saw, how many egrets floated past standing on tiny swimming grass islands, and how many times I simply did not bother taking the camera down, but just kept on clicking.

We passed other cruise ships, with people splashing in the onboard pool, or even dancing in the onboard club. The SS Sudan did not have any of these amenities, and yet, dare I say it? I felt sorry for those passengers on the glass-encased, character-less ships.

Being on the SS Sudan was a little like being in a time-warp, having been transported back to the grand old days of travel, with comfort, style and an unobtrusive luxury that made me prefer sitting on the sundeck with a gin and tonic in hand, watching the green banks dotted with fishermen and playing children, houses with women hanging the washing on the line, small farms and some larger communities go by, and feeling utterly at ease.

The Wi-Fi onboard was too patchy to be of any use, keeping me in a cocoon away from the world outside. Which, after a twitchy few hours initially, eventually added to the appeal.

- READ MORE: How to pick a river cruise cabin -

One night, we all were invited into the bar and watched David Suchet’s Poirot solve the devilish murders that Agatha Christie had conceived on this very ship, probably on this very stretch of the Nile.

The ship’s manager proudly told us he had been given a cameo role in the new 2022 Kenneth Branagh version when they filmed on board, and I simply cannot wait to see the film and relive my cruise on the Nile.

They say time travel is not possible, but sailing on the last steamship on the Nile, surrounded by history that is quite overwhelming at times, watching a day-to-day life barely changed for hundreds of years taking place alongside an ancient river, I dare say it is absolutely possible. Even if just for six days.

In the Footsteps of Poirot on a SS Sudan Nile Cruise

As ultimate travel experiences go, a voyage to Egypt ranks right up there with the best, but as Mark Bibby Jackson writes, a Nile Cruise on the SS Sudan ship is no Death on the Nile.

When I was twenty one my mother sold off the bottom of our garden to pay for a once in a lifetime holiday in Egypt. This might say more about her long-term financial planning than anything else. But the trip is one that will live with me until my dying day.

Nile Cruise on SS Sudan

It was while visiting some of the most amazing treasures of the Ancient World from the Pyramids of Giza to the Valley of the Kings in Luxor that I fell in love with travelling. Then we took flights – and occasional long-distance buses – between the sites, but now you can travel in luxury on a Nile cruise aboard the Steam Ship Sudan.

Origins of the Egypt Nile River Cruise

A Nile cruise takes you back to the sumptuous era of the Belle Epoque.

The construction of the Suez Canal in 1869 opened up the lands of Egypt to adventurous European travellers. The following year Thomas Cook was awarded the franchise to run the steamer First Cataract along the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. In 1880 he received the rights for all tourism-related sailing on the Nile.

It proved an instant success with more than 1,300 tourists taking a Nile cruise in the winter of 1889-90 .

History of the SS Sudan Ship

SS Sudan

Speed, however, was a drawback. So, between 1911 and 1921 Cook launched a fleet of faster steamers – the SS Egypt, the SS Arabia, and the SS Sudan. This reduced the Cairo to Aswan Nile cruise travel time to some 20 days.

Travellers, from diplomats to heiresses, and businesspeople to archaeologists seized advantage of the golden age of Nile river cruises.

One of the most famous of these was Agatha Christie who sailed aboard the SS Sudan in 1933 with her archaeologist husband who was there on a dig.

Death on the Nile

Steam Ship Sudan - Egypt

It was during this cruise that the famous crime novelist was to conceive Death on the Nile , with Hercule Poirot destined to unravel the mystery of who had murdered heiress Linnet Doyle. Coincidentally, a remake of the film is due for release in 2020 with Kenneth Brannagh playing the role of the moustachioed Belgian detective. Although whether he can live up to the wonderful performance of Peter Ustinov in the 1978 version is a moot point.

Unfortunately, the Second World War sounded the death knell of tourism in Egypt, and the SS Sudan lay abandoned until the 1990s when its Egyptian owner unsuccessfully relaunched it with a German tour operator.

Recreating the Belle Epoque on an SS Sudan Nile Cruise

It was not until the new millennium that the directors of Voyageurs du Monde restored the vessel, re-starting Nile river cruises. In 2011, the SS Sudan had a complete overall, renovating the motors to improve energy consumption and adding soundproofing. An organic vegetable garden was also laid out on the banks of the Nile to supply the ship’s restaurant.

Valley of the Kings, Luxor

Now you can sail aboard the SS Sudan on a Nile Cruise for six days and five nights from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa. Choose from one of the five suites, such as the Agatha Christie suite, where the author lay in bed at night conceiving the intricate plot surrounding Linnet Doyle’s death. Like the adjoining Lady Duff Gordon suite, named after the ethnologist, it has spectacular views of the Nile. There are also 18 cabins.

A sense of the golden era of Nile cruises is created by the warm wooden panelled interiors, gilded and copper bedframes, period furniture and parquet flooring in the cabins. All are named after people who will be forever linked with the history of this great country, including King Farouk, the last monarch of Egypt; Ferdinand de Lesseps, the architect of the Suez Canal; and Howard Carter, the discoverer of the tomb of Tutankhanum , in the Valley of the Kings (or Pharaohs).

Ancient Treasures along a Nile Cruise Egypt

See the wonderful temple of Edfu on your Nile River cruise.

The latter is one of the many delights lying in wait for you on a Nile cruise, and which so entranced me in my early twenties.

The cruise takes in the sites of Abydos, the centre of the cult of Osiris; the spectacular temples of Karnak; the temple of Luxor and the valleys of the Kings, Queens and Nobles; Edfu, one of the best preserved of Egypt’s temples; Kom Ombo, dedicated to the Falcon God, Horus, and Sobek, the Crocodile God; and the flooded temple of Philae where you can see a son et lumiere show.

Truly, an unforgettable experience, a Nile cruise is like no other, and fortunately, now you do not have to sell off the bottom of your garden to discover the treasures of Egypt.

SS Sudan Holiday Egypt Cruise

An eight-day cruise on the Nile on the SS Sudan with Original Travel starts from £3,700. This includes international flights, and overnight stays in the Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor, and the Sofitel Legend Cataract Aswan. All trips are tailored to your requirements, including optional hieroglyphic and Egyptian cookery classes, as well as a side trip to the quite amazing temple of Abu Simbel. Further details of a SS Sudan holiday can be found here .

15 Best Things to Do in Tuscany

By Chris Allsop

Last updated: May 29th, 2024

Volterra, one of the best things to do in Tuscany

  • Find a Cruise

Discover the best things to do in Tuscany, a hilly region of central Italy with remarkable breadth as a destination.

Visits to Tuscany are often entirely concerned with the Renaissance, the beguiling city of Florence, and the cultural legacy of the powerful Medici family. But Tuscany is also a landscape of vineyards, the verdant Apuan Alps, and the long, sandy beaches of protected wildernesses such as Maremma on Italy’s west coast.

If you’re wondering what to do in Tuscany, you’ll never run out of ideas, from exploring medieval villages to learning the art of pasta cookery, and admiring world-famous art.

Explore Florence’s Historic District

Florence Historic District, one of the best things to do in Tuscany

Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore, Florence

Florence was the cradle of the Renaissance, and visiting its historic center ( centro storico ) is one of the best things to do in Tuscany.

Designated by the remains of its 14th-century town walls, the centro storico offers an unimaginable trove of artistic and cultural treasures, both in the city’s museums and outside in its squares.

Begin beside the impressive dimensions of Florence’s cathedral. One of the most beautiful buildings in Tuscany, if not all of Italy, the Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore is also a technical marvel featuring Brunelleschi’s innovative self-supporting dome.

Piazza Della Signoria, Florence

Somehow tear yourself away from the Duomo’s marble neo-gothic facade and find Piazza Della Signoria. Vying with the Duomo as the centro storico ’s main event, the piazza is an open-air sculpture park.

Besides the artistic masterpieces on display, you’ll also see the Palazzo Vecchio, the medieval political palace that wields influence even today.

See David in the Accademia Gallery

David inside the Accademia Gallery

David in Accademia Gallery, Florence

One of the world’s most famous sculptures, Michelangelo’s David , is found in Florence’s Accademia Gallery. Coming face-to-face with it is one of the best things to do in Tuscany.

Find the Accademia on via Ricasoli. Tap into one of the museum’s suggested visitor trails to get to grips with its large collection of sculptures, panel paintings, and antique musical instruments.

Among the treasures within is a model of Giambologna’s Abduction of the Sabine Women . Stop by Piazza della Signora to see the original.

Curiously, the reverse is the case with David . A copy can be seen in the square, but you’ll find the original within a well-lit alcove in the Accademia. Take your time as you marvel at the skill that breathed life into that marble form.

Marvel at Pisa’s Square of Miracles

View of the Square of Miracles, Pisa

Square of Miracles, Pisa

Located just inland from the coast, Pisa was once a powerful maritime republic. Testimony to its medieval importance is its UNESCO-protected Square of Miracles (Piazza Dei Miracoli), a visit to which is one of the best things to do in Tuscany.

The grand structures here are gathered together in an almost overwhelming show of wealth and importance. These include the Old Cemetery, the Baptistery, the cathedral, and the instantly recognizable Leaning Tower.

Pisa, one of the best things to do in Tuscany

Baptistery, Pisa

All are built from the same snowy white marble. And while the tower is uniquely striking, probably the Piazza Dei Miracoli’s most significant building is the Baptistery. The largest structure of its kind in the world, it contains Pisano’s Pulpit, the sculptural spark that helped ignite the creative leap known as the Renaissance.

Revel in the Uffizi Gallery’s Art Collection

Beautiful facade of Uffizi Gallery

Uffizi Gallery, Florence

Florence is known for its galleries and museums, and Uffizi Gallery is world class. Situated close to the Arno River, its collection is housed within what was essentially a stately 16th-century office block ( uffizi in Italian translates as “offices”).

Naturally, offices had more panache in the days of the Medici, and this Vasari-designed edifice is more a place of frescoes than workers’ cubicles. Inside, you’ll find an extensive collection of artworks that span over 500 years.

Renaissance giants such as Giotto, Raffaello, Caravaggio, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo are all represented within. You’ll also find the instantly recognizable Birth of Venus by Botticelli in the Uffizi. Try booking an entry time after 4 p.m. to help you beat the crush of other art lovers.

Explore the Sculpture-Filled Boboli Gardens

Beautiful scenery of the Boboli Gardens

Boboli Gardens, Florence

Offering over 100 acres of art and botanical beauty, the Boboli Gardens of Florence is one of Italy’s most significant heritage gardens.

You’ll find it behind the Pitti Palace, the former Grand Ducal residence that’s since been transformed into the city’s largest museum complex. Commissioned by Cosimo Medici I in the 16th century, the Italian gardens are an artistic collaboration by some of the most recognizable names from the Renaissance.

The Boboli was also the first-ever garden designed in what came to be recognized as the “Italian Style”. Wandering amid its precisely pruned hedges and eye-catching follies, you’ll encounter the dramatic Fountain of Neptune by Lorenzi, and the Buontalenti-designed grotto with its centerpiece of Giambologna’s Bathing Venus .

Discover Lari Village

Scenic view of Lari Village

Lari Village

Once known as “the capital of the Pisan Hills”, Lari is an exquisitely constructed hilltop town. With a history dating back to the Etruscan era, it’s a repository of centuries of regional history.

Because of its strategic importance, Lari contains the imposing Renaissance fortress Castello dei Vicari. Today, this Italian castle has been transformed into a museum exhibiting objects from Etruscan times up to the Renaissance. Descend the stairs to the prison to explore the subterranean level once simply referred to as “hell”.

While Lari’s political importance ebbed over the centuries, its significance for cherry lovers has never diminished. An important production center for the fruit up until the mid-20th century, today the village’s cherry harvest (featuring 14 native varieties) is celebrated in a two-week festival at the start of summer with cherry wine, cherry torta , and dancing.

Make Authentic Tuscan Pasta

Pici on a plate

The world of Italian pasta can be bafflingly wide, and in Tuscany you’ll come across unusual regional pasta married with rich and delicious sauces. A classic is pici , a rustic, sausage-like spaghetti, once hand-rolled by the Etruscans and maintained by the Sienese in their fragrant all’aglione garlic sauce.

If you’re in the village of Lari and wondering what to do in Tuscany next, pay a visit to the Martelli pasta company. Situated close to the castle in the historic village of Lari, the Martelli family continues to make traditional, handmade pasta in their boutique pasta factory. Join them inside for a deep dive into the production of this artisanal product.

Explore Volterra

Volterra, one of the best things to do in Tuscany

A beautifully preserved medieval village, Volterra has a history that stretches back to the pre-Roman Etruscan civilization.

The history is tangible within the town’s impressive Etruscan-era walls, as well as among its other archaeological treasures. See the beautifully situated Roman theater, the Etruscan Acropolis (dating back to the 8th century BC), and Volterra’s handsome Piazza dei Priori with its weathered flagstones and countless arched windows and doorways.

Alabaster artisan in Volterra

Perched on a hilltop southwest of Florence, Volterra has long been known for its production of alabaster. The “alabastrai” artisans of Volterra created all manner of objects from alabaster, the most significant being Etruscan funerary urns. Head to Volterra’s Guarnacci Museum to see them, one of the world’s leading museums about the Etruscan civilization.

Wander Livorno’s Canals

View of the canal in Livorno

One of the best things to do in Tuscany is to go slightly off the beaten track and discover a slice of authentic Tuscany. Livorno is one of the best places to achieve this.

Once a powerful medieval port controlled by the Florentine Medici family, Livorno (a name that translates to the ungainly “leghorn” in English) has a rich past. Today it’s the third largest city of this Italian region and, while it’s expanded, the historic seafront has remained intact.

Livorno’s most handsome quarter is the Venezia Nuova, a 17th-century area of canals, bars housed in the storerooms of former merchants’ mansions, and seafood-focused trattorias. Leading off from the port, you’ll find Venezia Nuova full of life at aperitivo hour.

Cycle Lucca’s Defensive Walls

Couple biking in Lucca

Close to the coast is Lucca, a beautiful Italian city with a sizable historic center ensconced within its original medieval walls.

Formerly one of the richest cities in Tuscany, Lucca is a glorious spot for a day trip or weekend escape. Wander across its pretty boutique-lined piazzi , climb to the leafy heights of its Guinigi Tower, and take a cycle ride around the broad walls.

Essentially, the walls form a circular park where you’ll pass locals playing games of chess and basking in the sun. Beyond the walls, the rolling Tuscan countryside vies with Lucca for your interest.

Wander the Lanes of Siena

Quaint town of Siena

Siena is a brooding firecracker of a town. Much lies below the surface, such as the neighborhood rivalries that erupt during the famous Palio horse race. In its tightly wound

medieval center, the tidy herb gardens of the Sienese homes fragrance the lanes.

The idea that this is Florence’s tough twin comes into focus as you arrive at the Gothic architecture of its 13th-century cathedral. Whereas the Florentine duomo is light and airy, the Sienese equivalent is clad in bewitching Gothic stripes. The famous Piccolomini Library inside draws a luminous contrast with the Duomo’s moody exterior.

Get Fashionable at Tuscany’s Museums

Italy isn’t just a land of incredible cuisine and immortal sculpture; it’s also a nation of fashion and design. Florence is one of the country’s epicenters for snappy loafers and sharp-suited Italians, so checking out the fashion museums there is one of the best things to do in Tuscany.

A headlining homegrown fashion brand is Gucci. Head to the Palazzo della Mercanzia to find its HQ’s engrossing, three-floor museum featuring Oscars awards dresses and more. One of the city’s best restaurants, Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura, is on the ground floor.

Find more fabulous Florentine fashion at the headquarters of Ferragamo, located in the luxury shopping district of Via de Tornabuoni.

The Ferragamo brand does everything from ties to hotels these days, and the focus of its compact museum is equally eclectic. Its exhibits swerve from focusing on the 13th-century bankers who built the building to Marilyn Monroe’s custom-made stilettos.

Beyond Florence, several other fashion museums are nestled in those Tuscan hills. If you’re near Arezzo, find your way to the Gori & Zucchi museum. It’s the first in the country dedicated to jewelry with a collection of over 2,000 glittering pieces.

Experience Tuscany’s Wild Side in Maremma

Golden sands of Marina di Alberese, Maremma National Park

Marina di Alberese, Maremma National Park

In Tuscany’s southwest, you’ll find Maremma, a vast swathe of untouched coastline that spills over into neighboring Lazio.

This is a protected wildlife area and Maremma’s boar, foxes, and snowy plovers range across the watchtower-dotted Uccellina Mountains and the area’s 15 miles of sandy coastline. If you enjoy nature, you’ll love it here. If you’re a beach lover as well, you’re in heaven.

Walk through the low-growing sage bushes and wildflowers to reach the famously pristine beaches in Tuscany , such as Marina di Alberese. You’ll find no entry fee-demanding beach clubs here as you do in much of Italy. Grass feathers the dunes, bleached logs stand in for picnic benches, and the water is glassy and clean.

Scale the Heights in San Gimignano

San Gimignano, one of the best things to do in Tuscany

San Gimignano

A kind of proto-Manhattan, San Gimignano is a UNESCO-protected medieval town with a very modern skyline.

As you approach the village through the beautiful Val d’Elsa countryside, you immediately notice the tower houses rising above the puzzle of terracotta rooftops. These ostentatious domiciles were a sign of San Gimignano’s medieval wealth in the days when the town acted as a stopover for pilgrims en route to Rome.

In its pomp—which you can see reproduced in ceramic miniature in the town’s San Gimignano 1300 museum—there would have been about five times as many stocky skyscrapers. Each would have housed ambitious, well-to-do local families.

You can look inside Torre Grossa, the tallest remaining tower in the town, to get an idea of what Keeping up with the Joneses felt like in medieval Italy.

Have a Tuscan Farmhouse Experience

Wine tasting in Tenuta Torciano Winery

Tenuta Torciano Winery

Between Tuscany’s beautiful cities are its green and gold fields, its fertile red earth, and its iconic lines of cypress leading the eye to vineyards and the hilltop silhouettes of grand farmhouses.

In the stunning Val d’Elsa, your eye might alight on the vine-striped property of the Tenuta Torciano winery. Close to the historic towers of San Gimignano, this well-established winery produces delicious Sangiovese-based wines and more.

Tenuta Torciano winery, one of the best things to do in Tuscany

Among its many tours, Tenuta can help you learn what lies behind the intriguing oak doors of those picturesque Tuscan farmhouses. Arriving at the winery, you’ll step into a horse-drawn carriage for an exploration of the estate as you learn about life in this glorious pocket of the world.

Afterward, it’s time to taste in the dining room. Tear apart still-warm focaccia, taste local antipasti such as San Gimignano’s famous ham, and try the vineyard’s excellent range of Italian wines .
