Ochoa and Lozano out of Mexico's young Copa America squad

lozano travel mexico

MEXICO CITY - Mexico regulars goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and forward Hirving Lozano were left out of the Copa America squad as the country aims for a generational change, coach Jaime Lozano said on Friday.

Lozano named 10 players from the under-23 national team in his preliminary 31-man squad, intending to develop players ahead of the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

"We want a dynamic and strong team. It is important to lay the foundations for 2026 and 2030," Lozano told a news conference.

"We have spoken to all those who are not here. It is the ideal tournament to see who are standing out and to have a bigger deck of players for what is to come.

"If we want the national team to be as good as possible for the World Cup at home and give the best performance, we have to make decisions according to the big challenge we are setting ourselves."

It is the first time Lozano, appointed manager last summer, has excluded from Salernitana keeper Ochoa, who has appeared at five World Cups and has 151 caps for Mexico.

Newly-crowned PSV Eindhoven's Lozano said he will return to the national squad later on while he cheered on the newcomers for the June 20-July 14 tournament.

"The young players who start this adventure have in their hands one of the greatest honours as a footballer," the former Napoli player said on his X account.

"Wearing the national team jersey is a privilege and a responsibility. Today the honour is yours. I'm sure we'll see each other again later on, meanwhile, put the Mexican name up high."

Coach Lozano will cut his roster to 23 players for the Copa America in the United States before Mexico kick off their campaign against Jamaica on June 22, followed by Venezuela on June 26 and Ecuador four days later.

Mexico will face Bolivia on May 31, Uruguay on June 5 and Brazil three days later in warm-up matches.

Mexico preliminary squad:

Goalkeepers: Angel Malagon (Club America), Raul Rangel (Guadalajara), Julio Gonzalez (Pumas UNAM)

Defenders: Israel Reyes (Club America), Jorge Sanchez (Porto), Brian Garcia (Toluca), Cesar Montes (Almeria), Victor Guzman (Monterrey) Alexis Pena (Necaxa), Johan Vasquez (Genoa), Jesus Orozco (Guadalajara), Gerardo Arteaga (Monterrey), Bryan Gonzalez (Pachuca)

Midfielders: Edson Alvarez (West Ham United), Luis Romo (Monterrey), Jordan Carrillo (Santos), Erick Sanchez (Pachuca), Orbelin Pineda (AEK Athens), Roberto Alvarado (Guadalajara), Luis Chavez (Dynamo Moscow), Andres Montano (Mazatlan), Fernando Beltran (Guadalajara), Carlos Rodriguez (Cruz Azul)

Forwards: Marcelo Flores (Tigres), Cesar Huerta (Pumas UNAM), Julian Quinones (Club America), Santiago Gimenez (Feyenoord), Alexis Vega (Toluca), Uriel Antuna (Cruz Azul), Guillermo Martinez (Pumas UNAM), Diego Lainez (Tigres). REUTERS

Key absences: Neymar, Casemiro, 'Memo' Ochoa, 'Chucky' Lozano to miss Copa América 2024 in U.S.

S EATTLE - The clock is ticking for countries participating in this Summer's Copa América 2024. With less than two months to go, teams started to reveal the list of players that will travel to the United States to compete for the continental competition.

Brazil and Mexico were the first countries to do so, and just like with every such decision, the absence of some players has been a topic of conversation.

According to the rules of the competition, teams can select a minimum of 35 players on their provisional list but only 23 will make the final squad.

The five-time world champions were the first nation to release their 23-man list. Brazil coach Dorival Júnior had a few surprises on his list, including the absences of Neymar, Casemiro, Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison.

It will be the first time Neymar misses a major tournament with the 'Seleçao' since the Copa América 2019 . The Al-Hilal star has been out since October of 2023 with an ACL injury.

Neymar's absence will be a huge blow for the Brazilian national team. Not only is the 32-year-old the player with the second-most games played for the 'Canarinha' with 128, but he is also Brazil's new all-time goal scorer after breaking Pelé's record of 77 goals last September.

After missing Brazil's friendlies in March, Premier League duo Casemiro and Gabriel Jesus will not be part of Dorival Júnior's plans for the Summer.

Teenage sensation Endrick, who has been on the spotlight at a very young age, did make the cut. The 17-year-old made his senior debut for Brazil last November and scored his first goals for the 'Seleçao' against England and Spain during the March international break, becoming the fourth youngest goal scorer for Brazil all-time and the youngest since Ronaldo in 1994 .

'El Tri' followed Brazil but released a provisional list for Copa América 2024, its 31-man shortlist not including legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. The veteran goalie hasn't missed a major tournament for Mexico since the 2021 Gold Cup , when he was playing with the Olympic team in Tokyo.

'Memo' has been Mexico's first-choice goalkeeper since 2014 and ranks third all-time in games played for 'El Tri' with 151 games, only behind Andrés Guardado (181) and Claudio Suárez (177). Ochoa was Mexico's goalkeeper the last time "El Tri" played in the Copa América, crashing out of the quarterfinals in a historic 7-0 loss to Chile.

Coach Jaime Lozano's 31-man shortlist has an age average of 25 and none have played more than 75 games for Mexico.

Colombian-born Julián Quiñones got the nod ahead of players such as Raúl Jiménez and Henry Martín. Quiñones completed his naturalization process in 2023 and shortly after got his first opportunity with the national team . He has played in three games for Mexico and already scored his first goal in a 3-0 win over Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals.

Besides Ochoa and Jiménez, Hirving 'Chucky' Lozano is another important player that will not be part of Jaime Lozano's plans for the Copa América 2024. Despite not being currently injured, Lozano's omission comes as a surprise.

One of the reasons might be to give Lozano time to resolve his future at the club level. Recent reports indicate that 'Chucky' Lozano is close to completing a move to MLS' new expansion team San Diego FC who are set to enter the league ahead of the 2025 season.

Mexico veterans Ochoa, Jiménez and Lozano are out of Copa America squad

MEXICO CITY (AP) — World Cup veterans Guillermo Ochoa, Raul Jimenez and Hirving Lozano missed out on the Mexico squad for the Copa America on Friday.

Between the three, they were at 10 World Cups.

Ochoa, who will turn 39 in July, was a mainstay in Mexico’s goal in the last three World Cups, but he recently lost the starting position with Salernitana in Serie A, and his club contract was about to expire.

Ochoa was a starter in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups and was a substitute in 2006 and 2010.

“I spoke with ‘Memo,'” Mexico manager Jaime Lozano said on Friday, “to let him know that I took the decision and that does not mean that he’s out of the process (for the 2026 World Cup), and we just that we want to watch other players.”

The 32-year-old Jiménez played in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 World Cups, the last one as a substitute.

The striker has played only 193 minutes in 2024 for Fulham in the English Premier League, and has not scored since Dec. 31.

With the national team, Jiménez has not played since Nov. 18, and was not summoned for the last three squads.

Lozano, 28, has just won the Dutch Eredivisie where he scored six goals in 22 games. “Chucky” Lozano was at the last two World Cups.

“It’s always difficult, I don’t like leaving players out of a roster,” Lozano said. “It was difficult (to announce it) with everyone, but they made it easier than I thought. They showed solidarity and commitment to the team and they understood it.”

Another player who was left out was striker Henry Martin, who was the starter in the Qatar World Cup.

Mexico opens its Copa América campaign in the United States on June 22 against Jamaica. The other group opponents are Venezuela and Ecuador.

Before the tournament, El Tri will play friendlies against Bolivia, Uruguay and Brazil.

Goalkeepers: Luis Malagón (América), Julio González (Pumas), Raúl Rangel (Chivas)

Defenders: Jorge Sánchez (Porto), Israel Reyes (América), Brian García (Toluca), César Montes (Almería), Víctor Guzmán (Monterrey), Alexis Peña (Necaxa), Johan Vázquez (Genoa), Jorge Orozco (Chivas), Gerardo Arteaga (Monterrey), Bryan Gonzalez (Pachuca)

Midfielders: Edson Álvarez (West Ham), Luis Romo (Monterrey), Jordan Carrillo (Santos), Erick Sánchez (Pachuca), Orbelín Pineda (AEK Athens), Roberto Alvarado (Chivas), Luis Chávez (Dynamo Moscow), Andrés Montaño (Mazatlán), Fernando Beltrán (Chivas), Carlos Rodríguez (Cruz Azul).

Forwards: Marcelo Flores (Tigres), César Huerta (Tigres), Julián Quiñones (América), Guillermo Martínez (Pumas), Santiago Giménez (Feyenoord), Alexis Vega (Toluca), Diego Lainez (Tigres), Uriel Antuna (Cruz Azul).

Mexico leave Ochoa, Lozano, Jimenez out of preliminary Copa America squad

ARLINGTON, TEXAS - MARCH 21: Guillermo Ochoa #13 of Mexico looks on as Mexico takes on Panama in the second half during Game 2 of the Semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League Finals at AT&T Stadium on March 21, 2024 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Ron Jenkins/Getty Images)

Mexico stalwarts Guillermo Ochoa , Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano and Raul Jimenez have been left out of the side’s 31-man preliminary squad for the men’s Copa America this summer.

Goalkeeper Ochoa, 38, and forward Lozano, 28, were both included in the March squad for the CONCACAF Nations League and started in the 2-0 defeat by the U.S. in the final. Ochoa, Mexico’s third-highest appearance-maker (150) captained the side and he and Lozano played the full game.

Jimenez’s last call-up came in the previous international break last November and the 33-year-old has struggled with form and injury this season, seeing his minutes reduced at Fulham after the emergence of Rodrigo Muniz .

“We are two years away from our World Cup,” Mexico sporting director Duilo Davino said. “We have our spot secured and we want to take advantage of this great opportunity to not think about the immediacy of the result and project our path to 2026.”

Head coach Jaime Lozano added: “Having a range of players, the most important thing is to get to 2026 with the strongest possible national team.”

Mexico’s youthful squad has an average age of 25, with the midfield trio of West Ham ’s Edson Alvarez , AEK Athen’s Orbelin Pineda and Cruz Azul’s Uriel Antuna the only players with more than 50 caps.

Mexico were disappointing at their last major tournament, exiting the 2022 World Cup at the group stage after finishing behind Argentina and Poland . Gerardo Martino left his role as head coach after the tournament, with his replacement Diego Cocca lasting only seven games before being sacked and Lozano given the job.

PSV winger Lozano, meanwhile, posted a message of support to Mexico’s young squad after his omission was announced.

“Whether I’m on the pitch or supporting from the sidelines, I have my national team jersey tattooed on me like a second skin,” the 70-cap man said in a statement on social media.

“Today, the honour falls to you. I’m sure we’ll see each other later, but in the meantime, tear it up and raise Mexico’s name high.”

Mexico’s preliminary squad for the Copa America in the U.S. must be cut by June 12. Their first group game comes on June 22 against Jamaica , before facing Venezuela on June 26 and Ecuador four days later.
