The Maldives vs Mauritius: The Cost

The beauty of the Maldives can come with a hefty price tag. Those picturesque overwater bungalows are $500 a night on the very low end but easily go to $1000-$2000 a night at the resorts.  If you stay at resorts know you will be paying resort prices for everything. You can, however, find a standard hotel for less than $200 a night.

If saving money is your goal, you do have some choices that can help keep you within budget. You can choose to stay on a local-inhabited island (instead of one owned by a mega-resort). Make use of the public ferry if you aren’t in a rush (if you are in a hurry we recommend taking a speedboat since the ferry is not super reliable).

Food will be more affordable on a local-inhabited island as well.  You can even book day trips to certain resort islands in order to get a taste of the resort luxury without spending so much money.

When booking your trip, be very clear on whether the price includes tax, service charges, credit card fees, and airport transfers. Many online prices exclude these, which combined could add around 23%+ to your cost!

Compared to the Maldives, you will find that Mauritius can be surprisingly affordable. Many of the luxury hotels in Mauritius were built before the Maldives became a huge hotspot for travel, so you will find that some of the facilities are somewhat older and most hotels don’t feature stand-alone villas and private pools.

You can also try to find an all-inclusive package deal that includes meals and non-motorized water sports to get the most bang for your buck! If you travel out of season you are sure to save even more money. A standard hotel in the Maldives will run $100 or less. You can find some amazing accommodations on the island for under $300 a night.

• The Maldives have a remarkably easy visa policy – Everybody gets a free 30-day visa on arrival, provided that they have a valid travel document, a ticket out and proof of sufficient funds, defined as either a confirmed reservation in any resort or USD100 + USD50/day in cash.
• No vaccinations are required to visit although a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers over 1 year of age who are traveling from areas where yellow fever cases are reported.
• Credit cards are normally accepted by banks, hotels, restaurants, and tourist shops.
• Legally, if you’re 18 and not a Muslim, you can buy and drink alcohol. However since the Maldives is an Islamic nation, alcohol is effectively banned for the local population.
• The official language of the Maldives is Dhivehi, but English is widely spoken.
• Tap water in resorts may or may not be drinkable — check with management.
• The Maldives is an Islamic religious country. For this reason, nudism is forbidden whether on the beaches and in the sea. However, in some islands topless is allowed. It is better to always have a bathing suit with you just in case. Be sure to ask the resort staff about proper clothing.
• Tipping is not compulsory in the Maldives as a 10% service charge is added to everything, but of course , is always appreciated.

Mauritius – Need To Know Info

• With humidity and moderately high temperature throughout the year, Mauritius has a tropical climate.  The wettest months are January-April.
• Best time to visit: September to December and April to June.
• Visitors must be in possession of a valid passport and a return ticket. A visitors visa is normally granted for a period of 2 weeks to 1 month. It is recommended that you contact the Passport and Immigration Office in Mauritius or the nearest Mauritian Embassy or Consulate to make sure you have everything in order.
• No vaccinations are required to visit Mauritius, although a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers over 1 year of age who are traveling from areas where yellow fever cases are reported.
• 400;”>Mauritius is a blend of diverse cultures and religions, the populations consists of Hindus, Creole, Chinese, Muslims, and Europeans.
• Most people in Mauritius are bilingual and are equally fluent in English and French.
• Free public medical facilities are widely available.

• A VAT (value added tax) of 15% is payable on goods and services including hotel and restaurant bills

Being closer to the equator, temperatures in the Maldives consistently average between 25°C to 30°C. Even though there is little comparison between the two, people still find themselves at odds when it comes to choosing between them for a holiday destination.

The Maldives have a more closed economy which means there are fewer tourist attractions than what is offered in Mauritius, however, the Maldives more than compensates for this by offering an abundance of natural beauty. Mauritius on the other hand, offers a good balance of touristy attractions along with its raw natural beauty. Underwater attractions and Marine Wildlife.

There are many different natural wonders to explore in both Mauritius and the Maldives, knowing what to expect in each of these tropical paradises will help you make the daunting decision of picking between the two, first we take a look at the amazing marine life that each destination has to offer.

Mauritius is well known for the 18 th century shipwrecks that litter the coastal  floor around the island, these and recent shipwrecks have created beautiful man-made reefs that are home to a number of underwater species such as sponges, sea anemones, Damselfis, Trumpet, Boxfish and Mauritian scorpions.

Some of the underwater attractions found in Mauritius are:

The underwater Waterfall – This spectacle is located in the southwest of the island off the coast of Le Morne, it is a most fascinating optical illusion that consists of sand and silt which run off in a way that makes it look like they are pouring down a waterfall. The only way to see this dramatic image would be to take one of the helicopter tours and have a look at it from above.

Shipwreck L’Orient – This artificial reef was once a fishing boat that sunk on the 28 th October 1992, the vessel was originally sitting at 30 meters deep, however thanks to two cyclones the wreck was moved further down and now lays on its side at 45m deep. A favourite among divers thanks to its abundance of sea life.

Shipwreck Kei Sei – This former fishing boat was purchased by a restaurant in La Reunion, their plan was to turn it into a floating restaurant, but after changing its structure by adding concrete and an unfortunate cyclone, the vessel sunk in the harbour. The restaurant attempted to salvage the boat twice but ultimately gave up and decided to make a shipwreck out of it, earning its nickname; the restaurant wreck. It was finally sunk at 36m on October 11 th 1987.

Tug II – This shipwreck was a tug boat which used to guide enormous sugar cane cargos into the harbour of Port Louis. Tug II worked for over 100 years in the port before it officially went into retire, the sinking of the boat was brought forward to the 14 th November 1981 due to a cyclone warning and the site had to be changed from Mahebourg to Flic en Flac. The vessel sits at 20m deep.

Shipwreck Saint Gabriel – This fishing boat was destroyed by a huge fire in 1986 and was officially sunk on the 10 th May 1987, it was originally planned to be placed at 28m but because of a strong current, the vessel ended up at 38m deep.

Shipwreck Tian Xiang – the largest and most recent shipwreck, the Tian Xiang was a fishing vessel that was sunk on the 14 th June 2014 and like the L’Orient the ship lays at 45m deep.

Marine Wildlife – Mauritius offers some of the most unique and exciting marine wildlife sightings, there are over 200 dive sites, about 430 different marine creatures including the large pelagic fish and 200 different species of coral and turtles. Some of the less common marine life you may spot while diving here include tuna, wahoo and marlin.

This group of islands are best known for their spectacular diving and snorkelling sites, there are huge coral walls, underwater caves and the most amazing schools of tropical fish, there are even manta rays, turtles and the magnificent whale shark that can be seen just off the Maldivian coastlines.

The ithaa undersea restaurant:.

Ithaa meaning mother of pearl is an amazing underwater restaurant located 5 metres below sea level at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island resort in Alif Dhaal Atoll. Enjoy an evening meal while  the fishes swim above you.

The Victory Shipwreck:

This was an 80m long cargo ship that sank in 1981, it was on its way from Singapore carrying various goods for the resorts on the islands. The shipwreck is located in in North Malé Atoll.

Kuda Giri Shipwreck:

Another spectacular man-made reef, this wreck can be found in South Malé Atoll and is perfect for beginner divers as it sits only about 15m deep.

Marine Wildlife:

Being an ocean locked country, the Maldives is surrounded by an abundance of majestic marine wildlife, there are over 2,000 species of fish, ranging from tiny, colourful reef fish, moray eels, turtles, and rays, to giant pelagic fish, such as tuna, sharks, dolphins and whale sharks, common sights when diving also include octopus, squid, giant clams, various kinds of anemones and jellyfish.

Activities and Local Attractions

When it comes to adventure Mauritius is a busier and more bustling island, where the Maldives take a slower more relaxed approach to your holiday. Since the Maldivian islands are spread out, island hopping can become time consuming and so most people decide to stick to their resorts and relax in a hammock under a swaying palm tree.

Water Sports – Mauritius offers quite a variety of exciting water sport activities, there is kitesurfing, parasailing, water skiing, scuba diving and of course snorkelling, perfect for anyone who loves being in the ocean.

Hiking – If a good nature trail is more your thing, Mauritius offers various trekking and hiking trails in its National Parks, Black River Gorges and its dormant crater volcano Trou aux Cerfs which is surrounded by lush vegetation and is around 80m deep.

Dhoni Cruise – a dhoni is a traditional multi-purpose sail vessel with a motor or lateen sail, they vary in size and shape and are traditionally used as a fishing vessel, ferry, trading or cargo ship. In the Maldives you can actually take one of these on a sunset cruise to witness the island from a better point of view and have a few sundowners while you’re at it.

Snorkelling – The Maldives offer some of the best snorkelling sites in the world, take the chance to get up close and personal with the most incredible marine wildlife this planet has to offer.

Submarine Tours – If snorkelling isn’t your thing there is an amazing 45-minute tour that lest you ride in an air-conditioned, German-built passenger submarine that descends to about 100 feet (30 meters) below the surface, allowing you to see colourful fish and coral reef.

Whale Shark Tours – The world’s largest fish is the Whale Shark; these docile creatures are mostly found around the Maldivian islands and there are plenty of tours available that take you out to sea and show you these magnificent fish in their natural habitat.

White Sandy Beaches, but which one?

Weather it’s about taking a leisurely stroll, catching some sun or splashing in the ocean water, these beaches do not disappoint. Take a look at the minor differences between the beaches of the Maldives and Mauritius.

Mauritius has beautiful beaches which are all open to the public, there is ample parking space and numerous ablutions, as is the case with most commercial beach destinations. The hotels have claimed the best beaches on the island, the north has a number of small coves and the east has the most celebrated stretches of coastline.

Belle Mare Beach – This is the longest and most beautiful beach in Mauritius, it starts at Belle Mare village and stretches all the way south until the village of Trou dÈau Douce. The waters are calm and there is a great deep lagoon that runs between the shoreline and the beach, the sand here is extremely white and pristine. The length of the beach is perfect for jogging and after dinner walks.

Pereybere Beach – Popular among tourists and locals alike, the beach has a very deep lagoon with crystal clear waters which is perfect for snorkelling, it is located 2 kilometers east of Grand Baie and is easily accessible when driving from Grand Baie along the main coastal road heading east direction of Cap Malheureux.

Blue Bay Beach – Situated in the South East of Mauritius not far from the port city of Mahebourg, lies this breathtakingly stunning beach which gets its name from the crystalline waters which shine a different tone of blue from different angles and in different seasons. This beach can get crowded with locals over the weekends so its recommended that you enjoy this particular strip of coastline during the week.

Le Morne Beach – The Le Morne peninsula is situated on the south west tip of Mauritius. The beaches of Le Morne are positioned on the west part of the Le Morne peninsula on the base of the Le Morne Brabant. The beach features iconic white coral sand and clear blue waters, the attraction though is that this beach is perfect for wind and kite surfers. The ideal wind conditions continue throughout the entire year so you will have to be careful of surfers if you’d like to swim in its waters.

Mauritius has a blend of Chinese, European and Indian influences when it comes to their food, most of the dishes and practices into the culinary traditions are inspired by former slaves, Indian workers and Chinese migrants who arrived here during the 19th century.

Some of the more recognisable foods in Mauritius include vegetable, meat and seafood curries, fried squid, dim sum, coconut cakes, bread puddings, flan and Neapolitan ice cream, the more traditional foods include:

Farata – The Mauritian equivalent of Indian paratha (and similar to Cape Malay rotis), is a flat bread typically eaten with curry

Alouda – A traditional beverage that is typically prepared with a combination of basil seeds, agar jelly, milk, and vanilla, usually served cold.

Biryani – Originally from India, Biryani is a banquet dish served on special occasions like weddings, festivals, anniversaries and birthdays. The Mauritian Biryani is a combination of Indian and Pakistani Biryani with its own distinct flavour. Biryani can be prepared using either meat, chicken or fish but all follow the same principle; meat and rice cooked together in the same with certain spices for flavour.

Dholl Puri – It is similar to a tortilla but made using yellow split peas. This is then wrapped around any variety of curries and pickled vegetables.

Palm Heart Salad – A tasty Mauritian delicacy created using the very centre of the palm tree—the palm heart. This unique ingredient is then delicately sliced and served raw and is often accompanied by smoked marlin and enhanced with a light, yet sensational, dressing.

Poudine Mais – Corn meal is cooked on low heat with water, milk, sugar, raisins and vanilla and garnished with grated coconut to make this popular yet simple Mauritian treat.

Macatia Coco – These are sweet buns or rolls with a coconut filling in the centre.

The Maldives is almost 99% sea, so it is not surprising that fish (mainly tuna) is the most important staple of the Maldivian diet. The cuisine found in the island nation is a mix of Arabic, Indian, Sri Lankan and Oriental influences.

Garudhiya – A clear fish broth. It is one of the basic and traditional food items of Maldivian cuisine. The broth is based on tuna species found in the nation’s ocean waters such as skipjack, yellowfin tuna, little tunny or frigate tuna.

Mas Huni – This is a typical Maldivian breakfast, composed of tuna, onion, coconut, and chili. All ingredients are finely chopped and mixed with the grated meat of the coconut. This dish is usually eaten with freshly baked roshi flatbread and sweetened hot tea

Masroshi – A traditional Maldivian snack consisting of stuffed and fried dough. The dough is made with flour, oil, warm water, and salt, while the filling includes smoked tuna, grated coconut, hot peppers, onions, garlic, ginger, minced curry leaves, and lime

Bis Keemiya – Imagine a curry puff had ménage trois with a samosa and a spring roll, and you’re halfway to what a bis keemiya is.

Gabulhi Boakiba – This is a local dessert that is quite popular among Maldivians. It is made from grated tender coconut husk (gabulhi) and sweetened with both granulated sugar and coconut nectarine (locally known as dhiyahakuru)

Dhonkeyo Kajuru – Is a fried banana cake, a popular dessert in the Maldives. The dish is made using ripe bananas, sugar, flour, dried coconut, eggs and baking powder.

• Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, as mentioned before, this restaurant is a real treat as it is located five meters under the Indian ocean and built mostly out of glass, Ithaa certainly is a pricey restaurant, so for those with a tight budget, enjoy a mid-morning cocktail or a four-course lunch instead of the extravagant dinner option.
• Iberry Café – one of the most popular local cafes in Hulhumale, they serve a huge variety of dishes typical of the area, both the fish curry and the shrimp fried rice are great choices.
• Muraka – A fabulous alternative to the undersea restaurant, Muraka sits above the sea at the end of a jetty. An open-floor section provides a window into the sea world below, as waves lap around the rustic, wooden restaurant, creating the most relaxing and luxurious setting.

Parc François Leguat:

A most popular attraction for the island of Rodrigues. The reserve covers around 20 hectares of land. It was named after the French explorer and naturalist François Leguat who settled on the uninhabited island of Rodrigues in the western Indian Ocean in the year 1691. Massive rocks encircle a park where over 200 tortoises roam about, it is the nearest to being in a Jurassic Park. Next door are lighted calcite caves where the splendour of the stalagmites and the stalactites can be appreciated.

Mauritius Botanical Garden:

Also known as Pamplemousses Garden and SSR Botanical Garden, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mauritius, and is located near Port Louis. It is the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere, the botanical garden was built by Pierre Poivre in 1767, and covers an area of around 37 hectares. It is most famous for its giant water lilies, spice garden and unique collection of 85 varieties of palms from Central America, Asia, Africa and the islands found around the Indian Ocean.

Port Louis:

The capital city and main port of Mauritius, Port Louis was constructed in the year 1735 by the noted French governor, Mahe de Labourdonnais. Today Port Louis is the largest city in Mauritius and full of vibrant Mauritian culture, old colonial buildings and bustling street vendors. The blue Penny museum is a must see when visiting the port, it is situated at Caudan Waterfront and is dedicated to preserving the rich history and art of Mauritius.

Quatre Bornes Market:

A typical bustling market, it is divided into two parts with shops on either side of the street and narrow alleys which are packed with customers and merchants shouting at the top of their voices to grab their attention with various offers. This market specialises in textiles and clothing but you can also find kitchenware, carpets, makeup, sunglasses, jewellery and electronics along with fresh fruits, vegetables and tasty traditional Mauritian street foods.

Le Craft Market:

Just as the name suggests, Le Craft Market offers the best of artistic Mauritian arts and crafts, this 36-stall clustered market has a comfortable and spacious atmosphere with an aromatic ambience of teak and mahogany. Here you will find everything from exquisite woodwork to intricately detailed baskets and beautiful glass souvenirs.

Commercial Shopping Malls:

For a taste of home, Mauritius offers a number of shopping malls that offer everything from local retailers to international brands and food outlets. The different malls to choose from are:

Majeedhee Magu:

This local market can be found in the heart of the city, it is a sprawling street market selling everything from garments, accessories, local cosmetics, jewellery, dried fish chips, canned smoked fish and even electronics. Bargaining is the traditional way of buying items in these street markets so remember to never settle on the original price.

Island Bazaar:

This is an elegant European style boutique that offers a classy and posh shopping experience, the boutique not only sells stylish lifestyle products but also promotes the intricate handicrafts of local artisans. Be it a cushion, a shoulder bag, or a handmade fridge magnet, the designs are gorgeous and inimitable.

Oevaali Art Shop:

This stunning art gallery and souvenir shop was founded by sisters Raniya and Raya Mansoor in 2015 and is dedicated to making people familiar with the culture and heritage of the Maldives through art and design. Here you will find paintings and sculptures that make use of the islands sea shells and coconut husks along with a wide variety of Maldivian souvenirs.

You may be surprised to learn that you can still buy your favourite internationally known brands on these cluster of islands, while they aren’t malls per se, the Maldives do offer a few commercialized shops to choose from:

When the sun has set and it’s time to put your party hat on, Mauritius offers a number of exciting clubs and bars for both the young and young at heart. Another big surprise from the Maldives is that they offer some pretty spectacular night clubs, these include club Kurumba, Subsix, 15 Below and the Babuna Bar. There are also two amazing outdoor cinemas, the Jungle Cinema and the Cinema Paradiso as well as other night time activities like crab racing, karaoke nights and night time fishing.

Visa Information

Mauritius offers most nationals visa free entry with just a stamp in your passport that allows a stay of up to 60 consecutive days. Your passport must be valid for another six months and you will have to show your onward or return travel ticket to prove that you are just visiting and that you do intent do leave, also if you are traveling from a high-risk country, you will have to show your international yellow fever certificate.

The Maldives grant almost all nationals a visa on arrival without pre approval, as long as you meet the certain required criteria:

• You must have a passport valid for at least six more months
•  A pre-paid hotel booking/accommodation.
• Sufficient funds in your banking account to last the duration of your holiday.
• A confirmed onward of return ticket
• If it is an onward destination you must show your visa for the next destination
• A Traveller Health Declaration (THD) must be filled in and submitted by all travellers travelling to and from Maldives, within 24 hours prior to their travel. You may submit the form electronically via http://imuga.immigration.gov.mv
• Lastly a yellow fever certificate if you are traveling from a high-risk country.

Maldives, Mauritius or Seychelles: which country has the best beaches? Where to go diving? What if you're not a water person?  Which is the least expensive and delivers most value for time and money? Here's a handy guide to planning your next holiday in the Indian Ocean:

None of these islands require a prior visa. Just a valid passport, proof of stay/onward travel, and sufficient money while in the country!

Maldives: Maldives is warm and sunny all year round. Nov-April has the best weather (April is ideal for diving as waters are clear). Dec-March is high season.

Mauritius: April-June and Sep-Dec are best. Jan-Feb are cyclonic months best avoided by divers. July to December is sugarcane harvest season when distilleries are busy with production.

Seychelles: May-August is high season. Best period for diving, snorkeling and birdwatching is April-May; Sep-Nov is good for whale shark sighting. Jan-March is lean season, so you may find discounted airfare and rooms.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND

Maldives: It is the closest of the three (2 hrs, ~Rs16k return) but its geographical spread requires air transfers, adding to travel cost. Resorts too are premium (Rs25,000-Rs2 lakh per night), perfect for luxury travelers and romantics looking for a do-nothing holiday. Fly direct on Air India, IndiGo, GoAir, SpiceJet or Air Maldives from Bengaluru, Mumbai or Delhi (approximately 2 hrs) to the capital Malé. From the airport, take a boat transfer to nearby resorts or head to the Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) lounge for seaplane flights to private island resorts (20 min to 1 hr).

Mauritius: National carriers Air Mauritius and Air India fly direct from Delhi and Mumbai (7hrs) to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) International Airport, south of the main island of Mauritius at Plaine Magnien.

Seychelles: Air Seychelles flies direct from Mumbai to Mahé (4 hr 10 min) thrice a week with more flights via Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Colombo. For inter-island travel, hop on to Cat Cocos or local ferries to Praslin and La Digue.

Get a history lesson at L'Aventure du Sucre, a Sugar Factory and museum tour that ends with tasting 12 types of sugar and 9 rums or go rum tasting at rhumeries (rum factories) like Chamarel, St Aubin House and Chateau Labourdonnais. Chamarel's attractions include Seven-Coloured Earth, Curious Corner and the island's highest waterfall. The winding coastal drive along Bai du Cap with a pit stop at Macondé viewpoint is among the 10 most beautiful roads in the world. Seychelles: In Mahé, Beau Vallon is the main adventure hub for sailing, parasailing, fishing, snorkelling and diving with dive sites varying from 8-30m. Big Blue Divers offers diving sessions around Willy's Rock while St. Pierre Islet (15-min boat ride from Curiese Island), is another haven for snorkelling and diving. Go on a spice trail across the ‘Vanilla Islands' to Le Jardin du Roi at Anse Royale in Mahé, a nature reserve, botanical garden and heritage museum. Explore La Digue on bicycles or quaint hooded oxcarts adorned with coconut leaves and flowers, emblematic of the island. At L'Union Estate heritage bungalow and copra kiln, discover old oil extraction techniques at an ox-drawn mill and the process of cultivating vanilla. WHAT TO EAT

Maldives: Most resorts come with a choice of restaurants, including Japanese and, in some cases, Indian. The magic ingredient is a tuna-based thick brown paste called rihaakuru. Maldivian cuisine is seafood heavy with culinary influences from India and Sri Lanka. Roshi or chapati (unleavened flatbread) is a popular staple besides sweet potato, cassava, taro and breadfruit, eaten with curries. Bajiya (fritters) are stuffed with fish, coconut and onions coupled with sai (tea). Mas (fish) is consumed in many ways with tuna being a favourite. Mas huni (fish salad) is a traditional Maldivian breakfast item made with dry tuna, coconut, onions and chili. There's Kulhimas (chili tuna), Bis Keemiyaa (tuna-egg pastries), Kulhi Boakibaa (fish cakes), Garudhiya (fish soup), Dhon Riha (tuna curry) and Fihunu mas (grilled fish).

Mauritius: Mauritian cuisine is a mix of French, Creole, Caribbean, Chinese and Indian flavours. The national dish dholl puri is borrowed from the Bihari staple dalpuri, often rolled up with white bean curry, pickle and chutney. The French gave bouillon, tuna salad and coq au vin and the Chinese spicy noodles, fried rice and seafood dimsums. Mauritian favourites include calamari salad, daube (octopus stew), fish vindaye (vindaloo) and rougaille – fish or meat with tomatoes, onion and garlic. Creole classics like Mauritian fish and aubergine curry and chicken curry are eaten with rice and mazavaroo (chili paste). In Port Louis, a visit to the food market is a must. At Le Courtyard, relish French wines paired with seafood, mahi mahi and gueule pavé (Goldlined sea bream). Le Crocodile Affamé (The Hungry Crocodile) at La Vanille serves an interesting crocodile degustation platter. L'Alchimiste restaurant at Chamarel liberally uses rum for espressos, braised pork and baba au rhum.

Seychelles: Seychellois cuisine blends French, African, Indian and Chinese flavours. Popular dishes include chicken curry, dhal (lentils), seafood and curries with rice. Fish is steamed, grilled, baked, salted, smoked or wrapped in banana leaves. Pizzerias like La Fontaine offer salade de pieuvre (octopus salad), Assiette de fruit de mer (ocean platters), cigalle grille (grilled slipper lobster) and crispy calamari. The iconic Le Grand Trianon-Marie Antoinette Restaurant at St Louis Hill has been serving Creole cuisine since 1972 with dishes like kari zouri (octopus curry) and sosouri (fruit bat). Try grilled octopus or octopus salad at Bravo! at Eden Island Marina.

CURRENCY AND SHOPPING

Maldives: 1 Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is about 4.61 INR. The airport has a few shops though TMA's terminal has a decent souvenir store—miniature dhonis (boats), ship models, shell ornaments, stone statues and lacquerware.

Mauritius: One Mauritian Rupee (MUR) is about 2 INR (INR). Caudan Waterfront and Le Craft Market in Port Louis are perfect for picking up colourful bags, pareo (sarongs), baskets and handicrafts. The extinct dodo lives on through souvenirs like fridge magnets, t-shirts, mugs and accessories. Take home test-tubes of seven-coloured earth or ship models in a bottle. Pick up Muscovado brown sugar, mazavaroo, Bois Cheri tea, exotic flavours of rum like vanilla, mandarin and coffee at Chamarel and the prized Fleur de sel (‘Flower of Salt'), a delicate crust that forms on seawater.

Seychelles: One Seychellois Rupee (SCR) equals 5.23 INR. The vibrant Sir Selwyn Clarke Market at Mahé (Sunday closed) sells spices and souvenirs like corals, shells, coconut artefacts, batik jewellery made of beads and seashells, bracelets, necklaces and earrings. Buy vanilla pods from The Union Estate Park, black pearls at Pearl Farm de Praslin, SeyBrew beer, shark chutney, flavoured rum from Takamaka Bay besides classic and blended varieties of SeyTe at Seychelles Tea Factory.

Maldives: This is an Islamic country, dress moderately in public spaces. Religious idols are prohibited. Drinking is restricted only to private resorts. If you are carrying any liquor, it is confiscated temporarily at the airport and returned on your way out.

Mauritius: Look out for the paille-en-queue, the white long-tailed Tropicbird, named after its distinctive ‘straw-tail.' It is the symbol of the national airline Air Mauritius and it is considered auspicious to spot one.

Seychelles: Catch the weekly night market Bazar Labrin at Beau Vallon beach in Mahé (Wednesdays and last Saturday of each month) that stirs up Creole specialties and live music, offering a peek into Seychellois life.

Today: Maldives, Seychelles or Mauritius: which island to choose?

Are you dreaming of a tropical island hideaway with dazzling beaches, turquoise waters, and exceptional accommodations offering an air of exclusivity and romance? Then the Maldives , Seychelles and Mauritius are thé destinations that you should put on your bucket list. Located in the Indian Ocean, these island aren’t as similar as you might first think, with each nation having its own charm and offering travelers a very different experience. Asking yourself which island to choose for a holiday of a lifetime? Let me guide you so that you may find out which one suits you the best by comparing the following characteristics:

• The Maldives  enjoy a tropical, generally humid climate throughout the year with almost no fluctuations in temperature, due to their location on the Equator. The winter monsoon – named ‘Iruvai’ in Dhivehi (Maldivian language) – is the best time to visit the Maldives with blue, clear skies on most days and less frequent rain (although showery days still occur). The winter monsoon generally starts in November and lasts through April. The summer monsoon – named ‘Halhangu’ in Dhivehi – runs from May to October, peaking in June, and brings heavy rains, thunderstorms, winds and rough seas (sometimes for days in a row). It is worth paying higher prices and sticking to the dry season in the Maldives, as there is not much to do on a rainy day. It has to be noted that Maldivian weather became less predictable since the 2004 tsunami. Especially November and December, which are often labelled as dry season months, have been very unsettled in recent years. Also keep in mind that the Southern Atolls – located south of the Equator – see more clouds, rain and storms due the presence of the nearby intertropical convergence zone.
• The Seychelles also enjoy a tropical, humid climate with constant high temperatures throughout the year. The weather is similar to the Maldives, although it features an opposite pattern. From May to October (wet season in the Maldives) the south-east trade winds (Southeast Monsoon) bring a relatively dry period to the Seychelles with mostly clear skies and very little precipitation although seas can be choppy at this time of year (with seaweed on the beaches). From December to March (dry seasons in the Maldives), the Northwest Monsoon brings very wet weather to the Seychelles, especially in December and January, though the seas are calmer during this period. The transition months April and October are interspersed between the Southeast and Northwest Monsoon and are often considered the best months for a visit to the archipelago: the winds die down as they change direction and sunny days are the norm (with a few passing showers).
• Mauritius enjoys a subtropical climate with a similar pattern to that of the Seychelles: the dry seasons runs from May to October (Mauritian winter) while the wet seasons occurs from November to April (Mauritian summer). There are some differences though with the weather of the Maldives and the Seychelles. There is more fluctuation in the temperature since Mauritius is located further away from the Equator: the wet summer brings very hot and humid days, while the temperature is more comfortable and balmy during the dry winter season (you may even need a light jacket at night). Also, contrary to the Seychelles and the Maldives, Mauritius is located in the so-called cyclone belt with a risk of tropical hurricanes in the hot summer months (chances are very low though). So in general, the best time to visit Mauritius for cooler, drier weather is from May to December. That said, if you’re planning to stay on Mauritius’ east coast, I recommend avoiding the months of July and August as this is when the wind is at its strongest on this side of the island.

Winner: The Seychelles (from May to October) and the Maldives (from November to April)

2. LANDSCAPE

• The Maldives consists of 1192 tiny coral islands and sandbanks – of which around 200 are inhabited and a further 150 are managed as tourist resorts. These islands are grouped in 26 breathtakingly beautiful atolls and encircled by white sands and incredibly beautiful lagoons blessed with crystal clear waters and protected by reef structures. The Maldivian archipelago is completely flat, with an average ground-level elevation of 1.5 meters (4 ft 11 in) above sea level and the highest natural point being the lowest in the world, at 2.4 meters (7 ft 10 in).
• The Seychelles consists of 115 coral and granite islands which are the peaks of a massive underwater plateau. The 3 main islands – Mahe, Praslin and La Digue – are quite large, while the other islands are medium-sized to tiny. The island nation is a place of awe-inspiring scenery, with granitic mountain ranges clad in virgin jungle cascading down to hauntingly beautiful, palm fringed, with sand beaches. Some of the islands – such as La Digue – feature huge granite boulders on their beaches, sculptured by the elements and time itself. A real treat for the eye, the Seychelles – with their prehistoric, otherworldly landscapes – are the most beautiful islands of the Indian Ocean.
• Mauritius is a single island – about 21 times smaller than Denmark – ringed by reefs and beaches. Its interior consists of rugged hills and mountains, that are covered in lush tropical foliage, while the vegetation becomes more sparse with endless sugar cane plains towards the shores (except for the imported palm trees at the resorts where you’ll spend your holiday). In all honesty, and having traveled to Mauritius a couple of times, I have never been impressed by Mauritius’ landscape which does not feel very tropical (due to the fact this is located further away from the Equator). The only exception is the spectacular, UNESCO protected ‘Le Morne’ area in the southwest corner of the island, where the iconic Le Mont Brabant mountain (with a height of 556 meters or 1824 feet) overlooks a deep blue lagoon fringed by a white sand, creating a truly tropical idyll that comes close to absolute paradise.

Winner: The Seychelles

• The  Maldives are billed as a slice of heaven and one of the world’s greatest beach destinations and it’s hard to find any reason to argue with that. The more than 1000 islands are graced with the whitest sandy beaches and surrounded by the bluest and clearest of water. The only things you hear on the beach are the palm trees swaying in the wind and the warm Indian Ocean waters lapping the powder soft sands. While all beaches in the Maldives are marvelous, the quality of the beaches does differ from island to island, since – unfortunately – some resorts make use of sandbags, sea walls and coarses sand to preserve the state of their idyllic beaches.
• The Seychelles  have the finest and most spectacular beaches in the world. Their beauty is beyond words and also the main reason that more and more people visit this Indian Ocean island nation (and keep returning). The beaches at the Seychelles are so consistently amazing that it’s hard not to become blasé about them. Exquisite ribbons of powdery-soft white sand are lapped by turquoise waters and backed by jungle clad hills and huge granite boulders. It is not difficult to see why photographers and film makers love to come here. The Seychelles’ most beautiful beaches are Anse Intendance (on Mahe Island), Anse Lazio (Praslin Island) and Anse Source d’Argent (La Digue Island).
• Mauritius ‘ blindingly white beaches are excellent according to all international standards and most people will absolutely love them. However, they are in a different league as compared to the magnificent, pristine beaches of Mauritius’ Indian Ocean siblings described above. Not only do Mauritius’ beaches feature rougher sand granules (these aren’t the powder soft beaches you may have been dreaming about), they are also backed by a so-so background that lacks the naturally tropical, lush and jungle-like vegetation you’ll find in the Seychelles and the Maldives.

4. LUXURY RESORTS

• The Maldives have become the globe’s ultimate luxury holiday playground. Synonymous with unrivaled luxury, the Maldives have the most luxurious hotel resorts anywhere on earth with room rates that matches the archipelago’s reputation. Those looking to pay top dollar – often more than $5,000 USD per night – for some of the world’s most decadent luxury resort experiences will be spoilt for choice here. Every resort is constructed on its own unpopulated and pristine tropical island, ensuring exclusivity, serenity and total privacy. Guests can choose between villas built on the shore’s  blinding white sand or accommodations perched on stilts above the shimmering blue lagoons. Top-drawer spas, Michelin star dining, unrivaled butler service, and impressive wine cellars are the norm. Besides the 5- and 6-star resorts, the Maldives also feature some more affordable hotels catering to families, divers and those on a (relative) budget. I have published here a top 10 list with the most fabulous luxury resorts in the Maldives, with Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani being my favorite resorts in the island nation.
• The Seychelles have recently upped their game when it comes to pleasing the discerning traveler, and are on their way to equal both the Maldives and Mauritius in terms of astonishingly decadent resorts . The nation’s most exclusive resorts are all located on their own insanely beautiful granite islands, featuring palatial beachfront villas that offer the ultimate in tropical holidays and private living on the globe. North Island (where Kate and William spent their honeymoon) and Fregate Island rank among the most exclusive – as well as most expensive – hotel real estate in the world. Something to keep in mind is that the Seychelles’ resorts are either ultra luxurious hotels or charming guests houses with very little in between, although newly opened, more modest resorts are trying to lure the more budget minded traveler.
• Mauritius has always been knows as a luxury destination, with many leading and world-class resorts  dotted around the island shore’s. The luxury hotels in Mauritius were built long before the Seychelles and the Maldives became the planet’s hotspots for luxury travel, hence explaining why the facilities in Mauritius are somewhat older and why most hotels don’t feature stand-alone villas with private plunge pools (which is now the norm in the Maldives and the Seychelles). The good news is that the luxury resorts in Mauritius are surprisingly affordable, at least when compared to the sometimes insane room rates charged in the Maldives and the Seychelles. Mauritius’ five star hotels have indeed some of the best value deals to be found in the Indian Ocean basin. The island also features a diverse range of accommodations appealing to all travelers and budgets, raging from modest establishments to high-end glamorous hotels.

Winner: The Maldives

• The Maldives have a reputation as the world’s most sought after honeymoon destinations and for good reason. What’s not to like about its iconic sunsets, sugar white beaches, ocean-edge dinners, pampering spa facilities, endless vistas over clear lagoons, and stunning overwater villas. It’s no wonder honeymooners flock here in droves, including the rich and famous.
• The Seychelles offer a more discrete and understated type of romance as compared to the Maldives over-the-top and opulent venues. While the Maldives are favored by newly weds because of the decadent luxury and overwater sanctuaries, the Seychelles’ diverse natural beauty and exclusivity are hard to beat. A holiday here is much more of an adventure, which will appeal to more active honeymooners and couples who are interested in ecology and/or island hopping between some of its 115 islands.
• Mauritius is also a magnet for honeymooners and couples, although – IMHO – it cannot compete with romantic X-factor of the dazzling Maldivian resorts nor with the breathtaking natural splendor of the Seychelles. Having said that, Mauritius is perfect for couples that want to explore some of the world outside their resort (not possible at the Maldives) without the hassles of venturing too far away from their hotel base (not possible at the Seychelles). And let’s not forget that Mauritius offers more affordable luxury for honeymooners as compared to the Maldives and the Seychelles.

6. FAMILY HOLIDAYS

• The Maldives mainly attract adult travelers, with a mix of honeymooners, surfers, divers, spa enthusiasts, sunbathers and the occasional celebrity. Families with young children may feel a little out-of-place here, and resorts rarely cater for young children, with water activities limited to snorkeling and diving. In addition, overwater villas are often prohibited to families with children under the age of 12. There are a few resorts though that are great for families, such as Soneva Fushi , which features the largest kids’ club of the Indian Ocean.
• The Seychelles are mainly a destination for couples, with a focus on refined tranquility. With a few exceptions, there are no kids’ clubs to keep the young VIP guests entertained and water skiing, tube rides and jet-skis are not allowed because of conservation reasons. Having said that, eco-conscious families with older children (teenagers) will adore the island nation. And Praslin and La Digue are also suitable for a family trip with younger children, since some protected lagoons there allow bathing in peace.
• Mauritius is the Indian Ocean’s greatest destination for family travel and one of the most child-friendly destinations on the globe. Most hotels and resorts offer professional kids’ clubs to take care of and entertain children of all ages so their parents can have a holiday too. Water sports, light entertainment, and a wide range of excursions also keep the older children and teenagers entertained.

Winner: Mauritius

7. WOW FACTOR

• The Maldives have an enormous WOW factor, due to its exceptional geography, the idyllic and tiny tropical islands, the incredible underwater world beneath the crystal-clear waters, and the over-the-top hotels with the world’s most amazing overwater villas.
• The Seychelles ‘ might just be the ultimate Indian Ocean beach destination, although its wow factor is less obvious at first sight when compared to the Maldives. While the Maldives immediately impress their visitors upon arrival, the Seychelles’ exceptional natural beauty will leave an overwhelming impression on condition that you include some sightseeing and island-hopping in your itinerary.
• Mauritius is a very beautiful island but – IMHO – lacks a wow factor.

8. RELIGION & CULTURE

• The Maldives – a predominant Muslim nation – offers so much more than sand, sun and sea as the islands are blessed with a rich culture and heritage. A holiday in the Maldives is a chance to gain an insight into this unique country, by exploring island villages, sourcing local handicrafts, visiting heritage sites and the National Museum in the capital Male, tasting local cuisine, and watching cultural performances. However, most tourists will pass on that since they prefer to spend all their time on their private island resorts.
• The Seychelles  is a colorful and cosmopolitan blend of people of different races and cultures. The population is 82% Roman Catholic and 6% Anglican. At different times in its history, people of African, European and Asian origin have come to Seychelles, bringing with them their distinct traditions and customs and contributing to the way of life and to the vibrant Seychellois culture. Though there is no culture indigenous to the Seychelles, many influences from African origins have remained for centuries now. You can partake of the wonderful Seychellois culture simply by visiting the islands, dining, dancing, and having a great time.
• Mauritius ‘ culture involves the blending of several cultures from its history, as well as individual culture arising indigenously. The country is a religiously diverse nation with Hinduism being the religion of about half the population. Going to its discovery can be a journey into some of the most fascinating and refined thousands year old ancestral traditions. This rich diversity is found in every aspect of the Mauritian life. Churches can be found next to a mosque, Indian temples next to Chinese pagodas. Various religious festivals are celebrated with much fervour and devotion all year round by the different communities. Some of these celebrations can be quite spectacular like the fire-walking ceremony that is performed on the Cavadee day.

9. GETTING AROUND, ACTIVITIES & SIGHTSEEING

• The Maldives are spread out and getting around the islands (always by boat or seaplane) is expensive and time-consuming (most of the times, you have to backtrack via Male). That’s why most people prefer to stay on their private island resort while visiting the archipelago. Activities are limited to what is offered by the resort and these are largely focused on exploring the ocean. Days are filled with sunbathing, swimming, fine dining, snorkeling, diving, visits to the spa, and some excursions (e.g. visit to a local island, dolphin cruise, picnic on a deserted island, etc …). One island, one resort – that’s the main appeal.
• The Seychelles consists of 115 island that are covered by magical landscapes waiting be explored.   Getting around and do some island hopping is a must and easily done, with a regular network of high-speed ferries, small aircraft and helicopters operating out of the principal island of Mahé and catering for most itineraries. As long as you stick to the public ferries and limit your itinerary to the 3 main islands (Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue), it’s also quite cheap to go from one island to another. The Seychelles offer world-class sightseeing.  Mahé is home to the small capital and the beautiful Morne Seychellois National Park (which offers exceptional hiking). On Praslin Island, visitors can explore the UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai, while sleepy La Digue shelters some of the world’s most breathtaking beaches. The outer islands are mainly uninhabited low-lying sand cays and small coralline islands and atolls. The resorts themselves offer plenty of activities, but keep in mind that all motorised sports are banned for conservation reasons (which is great news for snorkelers and divers).
• Mauritius  is 45 km (28 mi) in width and 65 km (40 mi) in length. Getting around and exploring the island is very easy with a rental car or by taxis. Mauritius offers a myriad of activities and attractions, such as world-class golf courses, exciting water sports (e.g. jetski, windsurfing, waterski), parasailing, mountain trekking, hunting, birdwatching, exploring the old colonial capital, one of the world’s best botanical gardens, a couple of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, driving an underwater scooter to be eye-to-eye with the local marine life, and walking with some of Africa’s big cats. If you are looking for a fun and action-packed holiday, then Mauritius is the place to go.

10. SNORKELING & DIVING

• The  Maldives stand head and shoulders above any other destination on earth when it comes to diving and snorkeling. Deep channels concentrate nutrient-rich ocean currents into and out of the atolls, which supports an abundance of marine life, including giant whale sharks and manta rays. Most resorts feature their own certified dive center, and have access to a diverse range of dive sites suitable for divers of all experience levels. All resorts also feature a so-called ‘house reef’ close to their shores, where snorkeling can bring you face to face with everything from surgeon fish, tuna, and parrot fish, to eagle rays, turtles and even hammerhead sharks. I have published here a top 10 list with the best resorts for snorkeling in the Maldives, with Soneva Fushi being my favorite.
• The Seychelles ‘ stunning topography of expansive reefs, walls, pinnacles, drop offs, wrecks and canyons make for one of the world’s most diverse marine environments around, teeming with both fish and coral life. The destination is rated world-class by divers and also snorkelers will enjoy the waters, although the reefs are not as impressive as those in the Maldives. The Inner Islands rest on an easy-to-access shallow plateau and the pristine Outer Islands offer experienced divers barely explored reefs where you may even be able to spot the occasional hammerhead shark if you’re lucky! Contrary to the Maldives, the Seychelles’ top resorts often offer complimentary diving excursions.
• Mauritius is almost entirely encircled by a coral reef, making it an excellent destination for lovers of marine life, although the snorkeling and diving is a far cry from the experience you get in the Maldives or Seychelles. However, unlike its Indian Ocean siblings where the rise in the sea temperature caused by global warming leads to slow destruction and whitening of the coral reefs, the marine fauna and flora of Mauritius is still well-preserved.

11. KEY POINTS

• The Maldives is all about luxurious escapism. It mainly attract wealthy tourists, honeymooners, celebrities, divers, and  snorkeling enthusiasts, who are in search of the tranquility, decadent luxury and amazing oceanic wildlife offered by the nation’s small, super-de-luxe and mind-blowing island resorts.
• The Seychelles are the only Indian Ocean island that have escaped mass tourism so far, although its off-the-beaten-track reputation may change in the near future as more and more airlines are opening routes to the fabulous archipelago. At the moment, the islands mainly attract eco-conscious guests and affluent couples who fancy wild beaches, love to be surrounded by unspoilt and rough nature, put some island-hopping on their itinerary, and enjoy the exclusivity offered by the Seychelles’ string of uberluxurious resorts.
• Mauritius is the most popular island in the Indian Ocean. Tourists flock to the island because of its affordable luxury resorts, exotic live entertainment, world-class golf courses, and family friendly image.

Thank you for the information regarding these 3 destinations …much to absorb

Seems like an additional category that readers would be interested in is how to get there and the ease or difficulty in doing so?

Thank u for the article Im planing to either Maldives or Mauritius, it help a lot..

Luckily, I have visited both , and I would have to say that my favourite has to be the Seychelles. There was something about it that just calming, tranquil and utterly stunning. I’m planning my next trip there for next summer, I can’t wait!

My husband and I have stayed in Mauritius four times and would never consider the other destinations… Mauritius is one of our favourite places in the world ❤️ Plus everyone we’ve spoken to who has visited these destinations says that Mauritius wins hands down!!

There are so many reasons to love Mauritius! In my opinion it would score very highly in each of your categories…. Each of our visits were deliberately planned outside the school holidays and so we found that there were minimal children to interrupt the tranquility! So the high ‘family holiday’ score should not necessarily put anyone off!!

I think that resort authenticity should also be considered in your list of categories! The vast majority of hotel staff at Mauritius are native Mauritian people who have true pride and passion about their country! This counts for a lot and helps to enhance the overall experience through people who genuinely seem to care about their country and our visit.. I am advised that those of the other two destinations are mainly shipped-in expats, this would put me off a bit if I was ever to consider them as destinations, as I would feel that there could easily be a certain detachment and lack of passion – their hearts could not possibly be filled with the same enthusiasm and passion as those of the wonderful Mauritian people ❤️

Thanks for the blog, I have been to Mauritius last year and was thinking between Maldives, Seychelles and Phi Phi. I chose Phi Phi, this time. But if would have read this earlier I would have chosen Maldives. Hope to go there next year now. Nice one, keep writing and sharing!

Seychelles and Mauritius. June is the rainy season in the Maldives.

i am planning to visit by end of Jan’20. I am quiet confused between Maldives and Seychelles

i have been to all of the 3 islands, frankly speaking, Mauritius is perfect in all of these categories, but regarding problems, the little island has a war on drugs, with 1/3 of the youngsters are falling prey to hard drugs, even it has become a major international drug hub in the indian ocean between india, south africa, and australia, even the island compete for the drug tourism, by hosting rave parties 🙂

Mauritius has always been on my list, but thanks to this post I am going to reconsider and add these other two places to the mix. Appreciated.

Excellent article. A must read for those who are looking to venture into the Indian Ocean for a little R and R. For me the hands down winner is Maldives! It’s literally heaven on earth.

We visited all three of them. 10 times Maldives (next time in sommer), twice Mauritius (and comming), once Seychelles. That says it all. Cuisine on Maldives and Mauritius is superbe. Not so on the Seychelles. The hotels on the Seychelles don’t have the standard of M&M. 5 Stars on S are 4 Stars on M&M. Seychelloise don’t have the warmth and cordiality of M&M people. Apart from that we agree with the Expert.

Maldives will ban Israelis from entering the country over the war in Gaza

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — The Maldives government will ban Israelis from the Indian Ocean archipelago, known for luxury resorts, as public anger in the predominantly Muslim nation rises over the war in Gaza.

The president’s office said Sunday that the Cabinet decided to change laws to prevent Israeli passport holders from entering the country and to establish a subcommittee to oversee the process.

It said President Mohamed Muizu will appoint a special envoy to assess the Palestinian needs and to launch a fundraising campaign.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oren Marmorstein said in response that the Foreign Ministry recommends Israelis avoid any travel to the Maldives, including those with foreign passports, and those currently there to consider leaving.

Nearly 11,000 Israelis visited Maldives last year, which was 0.6% of the total tourist arrivals.
