Ohio's Underrated State Park Offers A Unique DIY Tour Of Its Vibrant Fall-Hued Hills

Mohican State Park Vista Point

In recent years, Ohio has become the butt of quite a few jokes with people taking to social media to lovingly bash this Midwestern state. However, what you may not know about Ohio is that despite the memes, it actually has a lot to offer especially when it comes to travel. In fact, the Buckeye State contains many underrated destinations like Deer Creek State Park — which is a slice of outdoor paradise  – and Cuyahoga National Park which is a great location to check out stunning Midwestern waterfalls and is one of the best national parks in America for viewing fall foliage . But, when it comes to seeing the changing leaves, if you are looking for a unique way to experience autumn in the rolling hills of Ohio, then we recommend heading over to Mohican State Park for a fall foliage tour you can do in your own car.

Located about an hour and 10 minutes north of Columbus, Mohican State Park contains 25 miles of hiking trails and over 1,000 acres of wilderness making it the perfect day trip for nature lovers. Because the forests of Mohican State Park are filled with not only pines but also trees like maples, beech, and sycamores in autumn, the entire forest becomes a stunning array of colorful foliage. While you can hike the trails to take in the crisp autumn air and brilliant fall landscape of Mohican State Park, another way to make sure you see everything the park has to offer is to stop at all the major overlooks and viewing points in the park on your own DIY driving tour.

When and how to drive through Mohican State Park for the fall foliage

Mohican State Park wooden bridge

Mohican State Park has multiple entrances, is easily accessible from both Route 71 and Route 62, and has multiple park roads connecting overlooks and scenic viewpoints making it a great candidate for a DIY driving tour. As one reviewer on TripAdvisor noted, driving through Mohican State Park is a good way to experience it because, "Within less than 10 miles of each other, you can visit the Mohican Lodge & Restaurant, Pleasant Hill & Charles Mill Dams, [and] the historic Mohican covered bridge." If you have time, there are also more beautiful locations in the park that you can add to the list including the Mohican Fire Tower. This fire tower is the second tallest in Ohio standing at an elevation of around 1,360 feet and gets you above the treeline, so you can take in the surrounding views of rolling hills covered in red, yellow, and orange leaves. You can also add in other gorgeous viewing spots like the Clear Fork Gorge, the North Shelterhouse, Discovery Forest, and the Wolf Creek Grist Mill.

Of course, if you want to get the best views of the colorful autumn trees, you need to hit the state park at the correct time. Typically, Mohican State Park sees its best and brightest fall colors in October, with the colors usually peaking around the second week of the month.

What else to see and do in Mohican State Park

Mohican State Park in autumn

Another great reason to take a day trip to Mohican State Park is that there is plenty to do in the park itself and in the surrounding area. For one, on your DIY driving tour, you could always stop and get out for a quick hike through the beautiful Mohican-Memorial State Forest. The most popular hikes in the park according to AllTrails are the Covered Bridge, Lyons Falls Loop, and the Gorge Overlook Loop. You can also explore the park on horseback, mountain bike, or via boat by renting a canoe and floating down the Mohican River.

If you want to make your visit to Mohican State Park more than a day trip, then consider booking a six-person lakeside cabin, or you can reserve a campsite in the park. If you'd like to stay in a hotel, you can stay at the onsite Mohican Lodge or head to the nearby town of Loudonville where you can book a room at a reliable chain hotel or go for something more interesting like Landoll's Mohican Castle or a whimsical cottage on a pond at Spruce Hill Inn.

If you are in a Halloween mood, head to the nearby town of Perrysville to check out the Mohican Haunted Schoolhouse. Mohican State Park is also located on the border of Holmes County which contains a large Amish community that offers plenty of interesting things to do from shopping for handmade furniture to arts and crafts.

16-year-old ohio native gianna clemente is living the lpga dream with dad as caddie at kroger, share this article.

When Gianna Clemente was first introduced to golf as a toddler, the stakes were not quite as high as the LPGA.

Range sessions with her father, Patrick, included friendly wagers over a bag of M&Ms or a Snickers.

“She grew up on the golf course. It’s in the family to be at the club all the time,” said Patrick, who played college golf at Youngstown State. “We tried to keep it fun.”

Patrick had no idea his daughter would show the strive and passion to become a rising star in the sport. He’s been able to see every step of the journey pulling double duty as dad and caddie.

“Golf started as something that I just wanted to be around my dad,” Clemente said. “Deep down, he loves caddying. He wants to be out here just as much as I do.”

‘There was this drive and fire’

Clemente, 16, is the top-ranked amateur in the Rolex AJGA Rankings. She won the American Junior Golf Association’s Mizuho Americas Open in May and helped lead Team USA to the U.S. Ping Junior Solheim Cup title Sept. 10. She received a sponsor invite to the Kroger Queen City Championship this week at TPC River’s Bend in Maineville, her sixth career LPGA Tour event.

In 2022, Clemente played in the inaugural Kroger Queen City Championship at Kenwood Country Club at 14 years old, becoming just the second player ever (Hee-Won Han) to Monday qualify for three consecutive LPGA events.

This time around, there’s no early-week pressure as she’s secured a spot in the field amongst the game’s best.

“Just to be on tour, week to week like this, this has been my dream since I was a little kid,” Clemente said in her pre-tournament press conference Tuesday.

It’s a dream that began with countless hours with dad between Squaw Creek and Avalon Lakes Golf Course in Trumbull County. Other sports like gymnastics and softball didn’t stick the way golf did. By the age of 10, she had won two major junior championships. At 11, she qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur and wasn’t fazed by the slew of cameras and media attention that came along with it.

“There was just this drive and fire. It was almost like she liked that attention. I thought that was a little unique,” Patrick said. “Everybody is nervous, but I thought the way she handled being put on that stage at a really young stage was different.”

‘I try not to be dad at all’

The journey has been a process for Patrick, too. Trying to juggle the roles of dad and caddie was a hard hurdle to clear early on. He started as Clemente’s swing coach, but knew she had to pave her own way eventually.

“As a family and a support system, we’re smart enough to know that she needs to make her own path,” he said.

The secret? Patrick doesn’t let the dad role come out at all inside the ropes. In addition to a full-time swing coach, Clemente is coached by Jorge Parade from Liberty National. Patrick has backed out of anything swing-related and is focused on a game management role from the bag.

“Somehow, we’ve found a way to compartmentalize a little bit,” Patrick said. “On the course, if dad comes out, it doesn’t work. It’s knowing when to let her be or walk 50 yards ahead to let her work with a coach while I stay out of the way. That’s a healthy thing. Somehow, we still get along.”

‘This is his dream, too’

2023 U.S. Women's Amateur

When she first qualified for the Canadian Women’s Open in 2022, Clemente stepped on the putting green for the first time and was somewhat star-struck.

“I had no idea what I was doing,” she laughed.

Clemente has pictures with the likes of Morgan Pressel, Paula Reto and Lexi Thompson from her days with dad at the Dana Open in Toledo. When she found herself playing against her idols, nerves were initially at an all-time high.

“It takes time for those (nerves) to wear off,” Clemente said.

It’s all part of the gig now for both Clemente and Patrick. She dreamed of teeing it up with the best women’s golfers on the planet. He never thought he’d caddie at places like Augusta National.

“It’s amazing for me but I know it’s even cooler for him,” Clemente said. “This is his dream, too.”

Local News | Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Peter Church hosting Hidden Treasures tours

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, 418 W 15th St. in Lorain, will host a 'Hidden Treasures' guided tour along with Lorain's St. Peter's Church on Sept. 24. (Martin McConnell -- The Morning Journal)

Still, Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish historian Philip Bak believes both are hidden gems of the city.

Bak, along with other members of both congregations, will host a Hidden Treasures tour of both churches on Sept. 24.

The free event will be a guided tour of both churches, he said, meant to showcase what makes each of the buildings special.

“We’re going to have a tour of important and interesting artifacts, and artistic items of the two churches,” Bak said. “It’s a chance for people to see them, because maybe some people have stopped going to church or haven’t been in our churches ever.”

The tour also showcase the numerous religious artifacts and relics of the churches, Bak said.

Each building has a rich history that even some within the city of Lorain are not aware of, he said.

“It’s interesting to me,” Bak said. “Both of these churches have been in Lorain for a long time.

“But, you can talk to people in suburbs of Lorain that don’t even know these churches exist, they haven’t been in them, they haven’t heard of them.”

“We want to have people see them. There’s a lot of great artwork in both buildings, and they want to share that with the community.”

Bak said he especially is looking forward to seeing the interior of St. Peter’s Church.

As a historian for the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, he said he wants to learn about other parishes in the area.

“I don’t know much about their artwork,” Bak said of St. Peter’s. “I’ve seen it, but I don’t know the history behind (the artwork).”

The appeal of the churches and their artwork can even reach those who are not particularly religious, he said.

Bak encourages any member of the community with an interest in artwork or architecture, to attend the free event as well.

“I would think that people like to see beautiful things no matter what,” he said. “Even if they (don’t) have a religious background, the stained glass windows, they are fabulous.

“The altars are magnificent pieces of woodwork that can’t be created today. St. Peter’s has more modern artwork (as well).”

The Hidden Treasures tour will begin at 6 p.m. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.

The event is free, and all are welcome to join.

Trump describes potential assassination attempt on X live event

Ronald L. Rowe Jr., acting director of the Secret Service, said the “paradigm shift” put in place after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump in July worked on Sunday when agents noticed what they thought was a man pointing a rifle toward the Trump-owned golf course where the former president was playing. But he also said that the agency is spread thin and needs Congress to give them funds to add personnel. Separately, Ryan Wesley Routh, the man arrested on suspicion of possibly trying to assassinate Trump , was charged Monday with two gun-related crimes during an appearance at a federal courthouse in West Palm Beach, Fla.
