PS Murray Princess Review

Review of ps murray princess.

The 1988-built PS Murray Princess cruise ship is a stern paddlewheel riverboat owned by aaa and operated under long-term charter by Captain Cook Cruises Australia.

Murray Princess is homeported in Mannum (South Australia) for roundtrip voyages exclusively on the Murray River. The boat's regular cruise schedule includes a 3-night itinerary (departing each Friday), a 4-night itinerary (departing each Monday) as well as a 7-night B2B /combined itinerary (departing either on Fridays or Mondays).

There are also "special" Murray Princess cruises, like the 7-night one-way itineraries from Mannum to either Renmark or Loxton.

The boat has 5 decks , of which 3 are with cabins (passenger and crew staterooms).

The vessel is Australia- flagged (MMSI tba) and registered in Mannum.

Murray Princess has 60 cabins which include inside, outside and limited mobility/wheelchair-accessible staterooms.

Probably the most popular venue onboard is the 2-deck PaddleWheel Lounge, with floor-ceiling windows that look out on the large stern paddlewheel.

The 4th Deck/Sturt Deck houses the Sturt Deck Bar and the Sturt Dining Room Restaurant.

During the sunny days, tourists can venture up to the Sun Deck and enjoy the passing scenery views.

The boat also has a small wellness facility grouping a Gym and a Spa (Sauna Room and Massage Room).

The Murray Princess paddle-wheeler is the latest of such ships that date back to the late 19th century. At a little more than 67 m (220 ft) in length and weighing just more than 1500 tonnes, PS Murray Princess is the biggest paddle-wheeler ever to operate on River Murray, as well as the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere.

For similarly designed (but way larger) paddlewheel riverboats in the USA, you can check the fleets of American Cruise Lines and the American Queen Voyages/Steamboat Company (AQSC) .

Never skip this 11am ritual in Europe

The cruises unlocking Europe’s best secrets

The cruises unlocking Europe’s best secrets

6 words you never want to hear before a cruise

6 words you never want to hear before a cruise

The ever-changing face of the Murray River has captivated visitors for many years and holds a special place in the hearts of regular travellers.

Terry Salmond, captain of the Murray Princess , says every one of the countless trips he’s had on the paddlewheeler over 25 years has been different. “You never come through twice and see the same things … there are always small changes,” he says.

“And as the seasons change the whole feel of the river changes.”

One of the world’s longest navigable rivers, the Murray stretches more than 2500km across South Australia, Victoria and NSW.

From the 1880s to the early 1900s it was a major trading route for boats carrying supplies into the country and wool from the region. Today, activity is mostly recreational.

The captain, a marine engineer from Adelaide, says the Murray is “like one very long country town”.

“It is a totally different feeling being involved with the river … it’s something you can’t see from the road,” he says.

“And it’s wonderful to be able to show this to people.”

Murray Princess Captain Terry Salmond

Terry’s vessel is an authentic working stern paddlewheeler built more than 30 years ago to re-create the golden age of Australia’s paddle steamers.

Captain Cook Cruises’ new seven-night Upper Murraylands cruise covers 408km with over 10 stops along the way.

Among those stops are:

The cruise starts and finishes in Mannum, 90 minutes drive from Adelaide. At the beginning of the cruise it seems like a small picturesque river town with a main street of quaint shops, and a population of 2000. After a week visiting a number of tiny river settlements and villages, it takes on almost urban qualities.

The historic town also marks the start of the 84km pipeline to Adelaide that carries water from the river to be used for agriculture.

BANROCK STATION

Conservation and viticulture come together at the Wine and Wetland Centre where, since 1994, Banrock Station has been restoring the wetlands that exist alongside its vineyards.

A haven for native wildlife has been created with the planting of thousands of trees and shrubs and reintroducing natural wetting and drying cycles. There are three self-guided walking trails through the wetland area – a great way to build an appetite for wine tasting and sampling from the restaurant menu that features local produce.

PS Murray Princess. Picture: Captain Cook Cruises

In its heyday, Morgan was one of the busiest ports on the river. The Murray Princess ties up alongside the remnants of the town’s massive wharf that towered 9m above the normal level of the river. It was 168m long and, after its completion in 1912, had gangs of up to 50 men working 24-hour shifts.

Displays in the town’s lovingly collated museum show how young our history really is. Many cruise passengers remembered growing up using the same items that now make up the exhibits. The more sinister side of the town is explored during an after-dark ghost walk with the captain – ending at Morgan’s first morgue, a 1886 sandstone building complete with a “corpse”.

SUNNYDALE AT BIG BEND

With the ship secured to a couple of big gum trees, the passengers disembark and head bush on a variety of carts and carriages.

The destination is a farm where the multi-generational family is redirecting most of its working efforts to tourism – with an engaging woolshed show, a native wildlife shelter and other experiences.

These include (at an additional cost for cruise passengers) a nocturnal tour, where, rugged up in an open-air cart, we see kangaroos, emus, wombats and, most memorably, an albino kangaroo; and a tasty bush tucker breakfast served in a rustic riverside setting.

NGAUT NGAUT

The Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Conservation Park is one of the most significant Aboriginal archeological digs in Australia. Tribal elders have returned to the area to protect it and share its mysteries with visitors who must be accompanied by an indigenous guide.

Ancient rock carvings are the history books to the area and the lively commentary brings that history to life – with our guide pointing out some beehives half way up the steep sandstone cliffs.

“It used to be the job of the Aboriginal women to climb the cliffs to get the honey,” she says. “We don’t do that any more. We just go to Woolies.”

There are two tours from which to choose – an easy boardwalk circuit, alongside the ancient rock carvings, or a 200-plus step climb to the top of the cliffs that features remnants of early habitation and tools. Both finish at stalls selling jewellery and Aboriginal art.

The Murray Princess has 60 cabins of varying configurations, mostly twin share, and all with ensuites.

While not luxurious they are comfortable and functional.

Within a day or so of boarding the Murray Princess, the busyness of life takes a back seat to the gentle rhythms of the river.

PS Murray Princess. Picture: SATC

There are plenty of places inside and outside to settle down with a book, enjoy the ever-changing scenery and activity or just contemplate what new deliciousness is being created in the kitchen.

Throughout the journey information about passing places of interest and local stories is shared by the captain. Every day there are activities on board and ashore.

Appealing largely to the retired community, the cruise is also an enjoyable and accessible way for many Australians and international visitors to explore the mighty Murray.

From the 97-year-old from Western Australia enjoying his first excursion on the Murray Princess to the repeat traveller who has cruised the river nearly 30 times, the Murray has a certain magnetic power over all the passengers.

So, the last word should go to an expert. After his 28 cruises on the Murray Princess , Dave says it is the tranquillity that keeps him coming back.

“You can’t get better than this … a floating restaurant passing all this fantastic scenery … and always meeting new people,” he says.

The writer was a guest of Captain Cook Cruises and the South Australian Tourism Commission.

Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess

When we started planning our great Australian road trip, we made a list of some of the things we absolutely had to see and do as we travelled around. Quite near the top of that list was taking a Murray River cruise.

Recently, we got the chance to do just that, thanks to Captain Cook Cruises and their luxurious paddlewheeler, the PS Murray Princess . Our four night cruise was incredibly relaxing and enjoyable. And we can’t wait to tell you about it, so let’s get started!

About the PS Murray Princess

30 years old this year, the PS Murray Princess is the largest inland paddlewheeler in the southern hemisphere and is propelled through the river by a massive wheel at the stern (back) of the vessel. Four of its five decks are named after some of the Murray Rivers greatest pioneers; Charles Sturt ; William Randell ; Francis Cadell ; and the Chaffey brothers, George and William.

The paddlewheel of the vessel - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

The vessels interior is tastefully decorated with mahogany style furnishings and decoration. On-board is a two-story lounge at the back of the vessel which offers the best view of the paddlewheel; a spacious dining room with dance floor and buffet; adjacent bar which offers views out the front of the vessel from both inside and the outside balcony; a sundeck on the roof; and below deck facilities like gym, spa, sauna and laundry.

Cruises can fit up to 120 people in the 60 rooms on-board. However, the crew told us most cruises have less than 100 people on-board making it a more intimate experience which allows guests more of a chance to get to meet their fellow passengers.

In the wheelhouse with Captain Keith - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

While visiting the wheelhouse, we were told by Captain Keith Halloran, our cruises Captain, that the vessel moves at an average speed of just 10 km per hour. It a very smooth, calm and relaxing ride.

Practical and Comfortable Accommodation

For a relatively small vessel, Captain Cook Cruises have made good use of the little space they have to create practical and comfortable accommodation for guests.

Randell Deck outside cabins - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

Now, we’re not going to go ahead and tell you the rooms are spacious, but they are arranged to be functional and serve their purpose, a place to sleep, store your belongings and freshen up. On-board, there are many other areas perfect for relaxing and socialising, so you’ll spend very little time in your room itself.

There are three different room types on-board, staterooms; outside cabins; and inside cabins, each with its own small private bathroom that includes toilet, shower and basin and a wardrobe for your clothes. We got to take a peek inside each of the room types.

The interior of a typical inside or outside cabin - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

Inside cabins are located below deck and have a small porthole to let in some natural light. They come in either twin or double.

Outside cabins are much the same in size as the inside cabins, with the difference being their location on the upper decks and that they also come in triple configuration. A door opens directly onto the outside deck and the cabin has picture windows letting in plenty of light.

Our comfortable Stateroom - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

Staterooms , of which there are only six on-board, are the most spacious. They are similar to the outside cabins with the addition of a fridge and tea/coffee-making facilities and come in either a double only or double and single configuration.

We were fortunate enough to spend our four nights in a stateroom which we found quite comfortable. There was plenty of room to store our belongings, the bed was reasonably comfortable with plenty of blankets and pillows and everything was exceptionally clean on arrival, and after each mornings service.

All in all, accommodation on-board the Murray Princess is comfortable and on-par size-wise with larger cruise ships we’ve been on in the past.

Exceptional Service

One of the highlights of our cruise was the staff. Every single staff member we met during our cruise was incredibly helpful and friendly. Straight away you can tell that each of them love their jobs and know what good customer service is.

Our fabulous crew - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

There are a multitude of staff on-board that each play their part in ensuring the smooth running of the cruise as well as making the guests feel welcome and comfortable. And because we were cruising during the quieter part of the year, with only 45 passengers on-board, the staff were taking the chance to do some training, so we had an extra few people around helping out.

Entertainment by the crew around the campfire - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

Stand outs for us were our Cruise Director Kevin and his trainee Kelly. They were both a constant source of information about our cruise and kept everything running smoothly, even when we had a minor mechanical hiccup. They also took the time to get to know us and the other passengers on-board.

The other standout was our Bar Manager Gary. Gary has worked on the Murray Princess for 16 years so he knows a thing or two about the vessel and the Murray River. He’s got many stories to tell about past cruises and he does an excellent job of remembering your name and what you drink!

While all staff are immaculately presented and professional, they are relaxed enough to make the atmosphere feel unpretentious, which made us and our fellow passengers relaxed also.

So Much Delicious Food

The only thing better than the staff was of course the food. And boy was there plenty of it!

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included each day during the cruise, as well as tea, coffee and biscuits which are available in the lounge 24 hours a day and a basket of fruit in the dinner room.

The immaculately presented dining room - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

Meals change each day with lots of variety in both the ingredients and style of meal. One day its a three course meal, the next a BBQ or a buffet. There are lots to choose from and they also do their best to cater for people with dietary requirements too.

Breakfast each day was a buffet that included hot and cold items like eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, mushroom, beans, cereals, fruit, yogurt, toast and a daily special. Everything we ate was delicious especially the special muffin on the last day!

Smoked trout and salmon mornay - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

Lunch was different each day and served in the dining room. Our first lunch was a delicious two course meal with a choice between a steak burger or a smoked trout and salmon mornay both served with salad. And for dessert a pavlova which was the best thing we ate on the whole cruise.

Pavlova - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

The following day was a lunch buffet which included a lamb curry, roast chicken pieces and salad with fruit for dessert.

Fish & Chips - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

And for our last lunch we had a choice between chicken and chips and fish and chips, both served with salad and a trifle for dessert.

Dinner was just as varied as lunch starting with a five-star three course meal on the first night. Entrée was a parsnip and cauliflower soup, then a choice of mains, either pork or duck served with sweet potato mash and greens and a delicious banoffee tart to finish.

Grilled lamb with veg and saute potatoes - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

On day two we were served hot and cold canapes in the bar before enjoying a two course dinner in the dining room with a choice between barramundi or lamb served with vegetables and sauté potatoes. Dessert was a vanilla panna cotta with figs and chocolate.

The third night was lots of fun with a BBQ onshore at Sunnydale which included lots of BBQ’ed meats, salads, billy tea and picklets with jam for dessert.

Seafood at the Captains Buffet - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

And finally on the last night we enjoyed the Captains Buffet which was full of seafood, a hot and fresh-cut ham and turkey and lots of salad accompaniments. After petit four and cheese platters were served at our table.

Lots to choose from on the Captains Buffet - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

Everything we ate during the cruise was of such a high standard. We left every meal feeling satisfied and the only complaints we heard from other guests was that they were too full because they couldn’t resist eating everything on their plates!

Fun & Interesting Experiences

One of the great things about cruising the Murray River on the PS Murray Princess is that the pace is slow which gives you time to relax but also allows you to take in every inch of the spectacular scenery along the river.

Enjoying the views from the Sundeck aboard the PS Murray Princess - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

Like the food, each day on-board is different. One day you might spend most of the day cruising, the next could be packed with shore excursions, or another day could be a bit of both. Everything is optional, so if you don’t feel like heading onshore to explore, you’re welcome to stay on-board.

The stillness of sunrise is breaktaking - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

And for those times when the boat is cruising, you have the option to just sit and enjoy the view, or join in on one of the organised activities to break up the day a bit.

Here are some of our highlights from the cruise:

  • Visiting Burk Salter Winery  – while the wines weren’t exactly to our taste, we loved meeting the passionate wine makers and hearing about how they produce their wine.

The vines at Burk Salter Winery - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

  • Sunrise and sunset – this is the most magical time of day on the Murray River, especially if the weather is fine. Despite it being cold, we made the most of these moment on the outside deck.

Sunset is a highlight of any Murray River Cruise - Our Luxury Murray River Cruise Aboard the PS Murray Princess - The Trusted Traveller

  • The massive cliffs – something we didn’t realise was that parts of the Murray River are lined with giant cliffs that tower well above the vessel. We just loved sitting up on the top deck in the sun watching them slip by and seeing the range of birds that nest in them.

  • A Woolshed Tour – our shore excursion to a working sheep farm included lots of interesting information on sheep and shearing as well as a bit of fun participating in a sheep auction and race.

  • BBQ Dinner – not only was the food great at the included onshore dinner but the atmosphere around the campfire, games and entertainment made this the highlight of the trip for us. It really gave everyone a chance to mingle, have fun and be entertained in a relaxed setting.

  • Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Conservation Park tour – an informative and interesting tour where you get to hear stories from the local Aboriginal tribe and see carvings that are thousands of years old. We took the full tour to the top of the cliffs, which rewarded us with spectacular views of the Murray River and its surrounding landscape.

  • Pelicans – the Murray River is full of pelicans and you’ll see them everywhere both during the day and at night. They are such elegant creatures.
  • Daily on-board entertainment – the crew put on lots of fun on-board activities for guests that choose to join in. We played trivia, bingo and even placed bets at Murray River Cup.

Some longer cruises allow you the opportunity to get off the boat and experience Aboriginal culture, shearing exhibitions and other tours to learn, engage and explore the local region.

That’s exactly what we did Wilton!

I know it is not a good time at the moment but we (2 older ladies ) are going to do a 7 day cruise on the Murray, we do not need to go in the high season .What price would it be for a stateroom in low season ,one person has a walker ,I guess it will be 2021 before anyone can travel, thank you Margaret Hassett

SAMPLE ITINERARY: 7 Night Murraylands & Wildlife Cruise – Departing Friday

Mid-afternoon the Murray Princess departs historic Mannum, the birthplace of the Murray River trade and communication, and heads upriver while you enjoy a Welcome Dinner. As we cruise under floodlight to our overnight mooring at Caurnamont you may see nocturnal wildlife on the riverbank. Watch for kangaroos, hairy-nosed wombats, tortoises, egrets, and many other species. Our onboard entertainer provides music for the night owls.

In 1879 the first bridge to span the Murray River was built at Edwards Crossing, which quickly became the bustling township of Murray Bridge. After a hearty breakfast, choose to explore the town’s historic landmarks and local attractions, such as the Roundhouse, or go on a wildlife tour at Monarto Safari Park*.

Those who choose to experience Monarto Safari Park will arrive back on board the Murray Princess in time for lunch then join us in the Sturt Dining Room for a special presentation on the bounty of food and wine produced in the Riverland. This afternoon, we continue our journey upriver and tonight we moor at Salt Bush Flat. After dinner, enjoy being entertained by our talented crew. *Optional tour: Monarto Safari Park Wildlife Tour. Pre-bookings are essential, additional cost.

All ashore for the guided nature walk where your guide will share the secrets of the local flora and fauna. It’s a great way to get in a little exercise before the Murray Princess departs and cruises a little further upriver.

Near From Landing, we turn and head downriver to River View Lodge (near Piggy Flat / Coolcha) where your discovery vessel awaits for a wildlife tour. Travelling in small, personalised groups, we explore the maze of the river and the birdlife is amazing. Watch for darters, herons, and egrets feeding along the river’s muddy edges.

The afternoon offers a choice of bocce or fishing challenges before a delicious dinner in the Sturt Dining Room followed by an evening of entertainment.

We head back to Mannum and after breakfast, you may choose to discover Australia’srichest and best-known wine-making region – the Barossa. Depart Mannum by coach to the famous Barossa, the beautiful ‘valley of the vine’ and the source of about a quarter of Australia’s world-renowned wines.

You will visit Jacob’s Creek Visitor Centre for morning tea and wine tasting and enjoy a two-course lunch at Lambert Estate where you’ll have time to take in the views of this popular vineyard. In the afternoon, visit Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop and drive through the picturesque regions of Seppeltsfield and Marananga which is full of history before returning to Mannum. Those not wishing to join the Barossa tour have free time in the township in Mannum before a mid-afternoon departure for our overnight mooring at Caurnamont. Our on-board entertainer provides music for the night owls.

Daybreak and it’s time for the keen photographers to be out to capture the special light and the morning movement of wildlife. Prolific birdlife includes pelicans, wrens, and swans. Enjoy a leisurely morning and lunch cruising upriver to Blanchetown through one of 13 locks which maintain the flow and levels of water.

This afternoon we moor opposite the township of Blanchetown for our overnight anchorage. As the last rays of the sun fade, we visit Burk Salter Boutique Winery and enjoy wine tasting at the cellar door which is fitted out with beautiful red gum bars. After dinner, join us for all the fun and excitement, and participate in our “Murray River Cup”.

After breakfast cruise down river to picturesque Swan Reach. The town was first settled in the 1850s and was originally the largest of five sheep and cattle stations in the area and is now home to native flower and fruit growers. The original Swan Reach homestead is now the Swan Reach Hotel where you can enjoy an ale or cappuccino overlooking the Murray River (own expense). Join a walking tour and visit the Swan Reach Museum (gold coin donation at entry).

Cruise downriver after lunch and take in the tranquillity as the landscape slides by. Catch up with friends over a coffee or drink whilst enjoying the magnificent scenery. When we arrive at Sunnydale, it’s all ashore for the Woolshed Show as we recreate typical Australian woolshed history.

Later we visit the Native Wildlife Shelter where some of South Australia’s most interesting native animals are cared for. And then of course, there is the great Aussie Barbecue – cooked and served in a bush setting on the banks of the mighty Murray River.

An optional Nocturnal Tour (additional cost) in a comfortable purpose-built cart is available after dinner where you may see kangaroos, wombats, foxes, bats, and owls by powerful spotlights. Special stops along the way are included to view the spectacular night sky which is part of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve.

After an optional Bush Tucker Breakfast (additional cost) or a bush walk with the Captain, we slowly cruise downriver past magnificent cliffs scoured by the river over millions of years. We reach Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve, one of Australia’s most significant archaeological sites, for a step back in time – tens of thousands of years – for a guided boardwalk tour to view ancient rock carvings and to learn about aboriginal history in the area.

We return to the vessel to cruise downriver to Younghusband. Along the way, adventure seekers can also take a scenic tender boat ride. Tonight, join your fellow passengers for a delicious final night dinner and enjoy the evening entertainment.

We leave Younghusband and head back to Mannum. After breakfast, we reluctantly say farewell as we arrive at the Mannum Wharf.

This amazing river cruise boat is a true inland paddle-wheeler, purpose-built for the Murray River. This classic riverboat was designed as a modern romantic representative of a riverboat similar to hundreds of such vessels that used to trade up and down the Murray River. Even better than expected. My best friend and I chose the 3 night river cruise as a way to spend time together while living in separate states. We expected it to be a quiet relaxing few days with lots of “oldies”. In fact we very active 70 year olds were by no means the youngest on board and , with all the activities on offer, we were kept very busy and met such a lot of interesting, fun people over the few days. The crew were friendly and professional, food was good if not adventurous, the scenery absolutely stunning and so varied, all viewed from our gorgeous home vessel the Murray Princess. Yes, the cabins are very basic and tiny but served the purpose. You do need to be tidy! We ladies had such a good time we are planning to take our husbands back for the 4 night trip. It is such an Aussie adventure. Ruth

We did the 4 day Murray Princess cruise . The cruise is very relaxing with delicious food and very friendly staff. A great experience. The river is so beautiful. I hadn’t expected such gorgeous scenery. The boat was great, just big enough with several lounges. There wasn’t any over crowding in any part of the boat. The excursions were good too. The cabins although small were well set out and we didn’t have any problems with space. Beds were comfy. Only thing I can recommend is that the coffee shop be opened at 7am for us coffee lovers who love a good cappuccino first thing in the mornings. There was a coffee/tea station available 24 hours a day with biscuits and a big fruit basket which was appreciated. All in all a fabulous experience and I recommend everyone take a trip down the Murray River. Colleen

Starting from Mannum for a Murray River Cruise on the Murray Princess. We had a great 4 night cruise on the Murray Princess last week. We especially liked the time we spent at the Sunnydale property checking out the sheep shearing display and going for a spotlighting tour around the property that night. The Murray Princess crew also put on a great BBQ and show as well. The crew were great in all areas of making sure of our comfort, entertain and food requirements. Judith C

First cruise ship sets sail from Port of Baltimore since Key Bridge collapse: ‘It’s a good day’

“Cruising is back in Baltimore,” declared Jonathan Daniels, executive director of the Maryland Port Administration, as passengers began arriving Saturday at the Cruise Maryland Terminal.

The festive occasion marked the first cruise ship to arrive and depart the Port of Baltimore since the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26.

Less than a week prior, the terminal was the headquarters for the Key Bridge Response Unified Command to coordinate recovery operations, Daniels said. They began condensing their workspace down last weekend, started packing up Monday night after the Dali was refloated that morning and were out by Tuesday afternoon.

“While there is still work that needs to be done to be able to complete the salvage operation, this is a wonderful sign that the next milestone is pointing to the fact that business is truly returning to the port,” Daniels said.

Just after 10 a.m., the sound of steel drums echoed in the terminal as it began to fill with passengers eager to board Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas cruise ship for a five-night trip to Bermuda.

Tom Sitzler said he and his group had planned the trip since August to celebrate his partner’s 60th birthday. They live in Washington, D.C., but had a very specific reason to sail out of the Port of Baltimore.

“The whole purpose of the cruise though was to actually cruise out of Baltimore out past Annapolis, because Allen grew up there, the birthday boy, and he wants to see Annapolis from the bay,” Sitzler said.

“I’ve always wanted to cruise down the bay and see all the spots where I grew up,” said Allen Steven, the birthday boy.

Cruises that were already underway or were scheduled in the past two months have been rerouted to the Norfolk Cruise Terminal . Steven said if their trip had been moved to leave from Norfolk, they would have rebooked.

A group of five friends from Harford County also were heading on a cruise to celebrate, donning matching pink hats that said “Friends on the Loose 2024 Friends Trip.”

“We are celebrating a milestone birthday,” said Kathy Schlehr. “We have all attained the age of 70 or beyond.”

“Not yet!” someone chimed in.

The group said they were ecstatic when they found out about a week and a half ago they would be sailing out of the Port of Baltimore. The departure location was one of the reasons they went on the cruise.

The return of cruises benefits the tourism industry in Baltimore and the rest of the state, Daniels said.

More than 440,000 passengers went through the Cruise Maryland Terminal in 2023, he said, and they may also stay in hotels, eat at restaurants and even come back to enjoy the city afterward.

“Many of them are experiencing what Baltimore has to offer for the very first time,” Daniels said.

The 915-foot long vessel with a 25-foot draft got underway after 4 p.m. and used the 400-foot-wide, 50-foot-deep channel that opened Tuesday in the Patapsco River. In addition to a pilot, it was accompanied by two tugboats.

Even though the Unified Command vacated the cruise terminal, operations are still ongoing, just back in their own spaces, said David O’Connell, the Coast Guard’s captain of the port. They coordinate daily on ongoing operations, including salvage work in the main and outside channels as well as coordinating with the Army Corps of Engineers on vessel traffic in the temporary channels.

Saturday, the Army Corps announced a delayed goal of June 8-10 to restore full access to the federal channel. Officials had previously said this would be achieved by the end of May.

“It was great allbeing together and coordinating operations, but it’s great to be here and see this place in a different light,” O’Connell said. “You see it lively with people that are going on vacation, going through security, the ship is out back. It’s a good day.”
