places to visit in rome georgia

Keith Beauchamp

The South is home to dozens of beautiful college campuses , but few measure up to the grandeur and scale of Berry College in Rome, Georgia. Set on 27,000 acres, Berry College claims the title of having the world’s largest campus. While the campus, partially modeled after Oxford University’s Christ Church in England, should definitely be at the top of your list of things to do in Rome, there are plenty of other reasons to visit the small town. Shop and dine your way through the charming downtown, see the state’s largest Victorian era district, and discover the history behind this quintessential Georgia town that’s just an hour’s drive from Atlanta. Here are the 15 best things to do in Rome, Georgia.

Visit Oak Hill & Martha Berry Museum

Courtesy of Georgia’s Rome Office of Tourism

Get a glimpse into Berry College’s history at the Greek Revival home of its founder Martha Berry. Tour the historic home that tells the story of the Berry family and how they came to create a four-year liberal arts college. Make sure you allow time to visit the Oak Hill Colonial Revival garden that was designed and constructed in the late 1920s and is a great example of 20 th century landscaping trends.

Tour Berry College

Founded in 1902, there’s more than a century of history holding up the hallowed walls on Berry College’s campus . Two major places to make sure you see are the Ford Complex, named for Henry Ford who donated the funds to construct the legendary buildings, and the Mountain Campus. The Ford Complex brings British grandeur to a pastoral Georgia scene thanks to Neo-Gothic architecture inspired by Oxford University’s Christ Church College. The Mountain Campus features pastures, hills, lakes, log cabins, an old mill, and hiking trails leading to the House O’ Dreams, a large stone and board-and-batten cottage on top of Lavender Mountain.

Learn About Native American History at the Chieftains Museum

Enter the former home of Major Ridge, a Cherokee leader who played a major role in Native American history by signing the Treaty of New Echota, which resulted in the relocation of the Cherokee people. Called the Chieftains Museum , his home is designated as a National Historic Landmark, is a site on the National Parks Service’s Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, and is dedicated to preserving and sharing Cherokee history and culture.

See the Capitoline Wolf and Rome Clocktower

Courtesy of Georgia's Rome Office of Tourism

You wouldn’t travel to New York City and not see the Empire State Building. So, you can’t travel to Rome without seeing the Capitoline Wolf and the Rome Clocktower . Both major landmarks are located in historic downtown Rome. The Capitoline Wolf, a bronze sculpture depicting the legend of the founding of Rome, presides over town from its perch in front of City Hall. A few blocks away, the Clocktower offers one of the best views of downtown if you’re willing to climb the 107 steps to the top.

Ride or Walk on the ECO Greenway

This 16-mile paved multipurpose trail runs through historic downtown Rome and along the Coosa River. Spend as much or as little time as you please, biking, walking, or jogging on the trail that connects several public parks, attractions, and landmarks.

See a Live Performance at a Historic Theater

Courtesy of Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation

If you’re looking for live entertainment while in Rome, head to the Desoto Theatre, a historic cinema that’s been reimagined as the Rome Little Theatre . In addition to staging several plays each year, it’s also one of the venues for the annual Rome International Film Festival.

Go Shopping in Downtown Rome

Frank Cardamone Photography

Support local businesses by shopping the many boutiques and retailers in Downtown Rome . There’s a little something for everyone at places like Cecil T’s Mercantile and Do Good Boutique , which sell everything from home goods and apparel to gifts and art. Music lovers should check out the vinyl and Capitoline Records , and treasure hunters wil delight in the antiques and art at Yellow Door Antiques .

Grab a Meal at Blossom Hill BBQ & Burgers

Located in Downtown Rome’s River District, this restaurant, bar, and gathering place is a hit among locals thanks to its delicious food and expansive indoor-outdoor dining and play spaces. Blossom Hill’s lunch and dinner menu features everything from smoked meats to chicken tenders and salmon burgers. Complete your meal with a seasonal fried pie or milkshake, then head outside to chow down and maybe get in a round of ping pong or cornhole.

Enjoy a Wine Tasting

Head to the downtown tasting room for Newby Farm + Vineyard to sample the local winery’s available vintages, sip on a glass, or purchase a bottle to take home. The vineyard isn’t currently open to the public, so this is your best chance to try their seasonal varieties, as well as more traditional rosés, whites, and reds. If you’re traveling with a large party, reserve the barrel room table for a more private experience.

Stay the Night at Hawthorne Suites

Located just off bustling Broad Street, book a room in Hawthorne Suites for a comfortable stay that’s within walking distance of some of Rome’s most popular shops and restaurants. The renovated 1890s warehouse has maintained its original wood floors, brick walls, and sky-lit atrium for an old-meets-new feel.

Escape to Kingston Downs

Step away from city center and onto 5,000 acres of natural beauty at Kingston Downs . The property offers several lodging options, from idyllic cottages overlooking wildflower meadows to safari-style glamping tents to a clubhouse complete with an outdoor kitchen and firepit. Guests have access to all kinds of outdoor activities including hiking on seven miles of trails, mountain biking, swimming in the Etowah river, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and even guided quail and turkey hunts or pheasant and dove shoots.

Dine with Locals at Harvest Moon Café

Courtesy of Harvest Moon Cafe

This farm-to-table restaurant is a beloved spot for everything from brunch to late-night drink and everything in between. Create your own meat-and-three plate starting with entrees like smothered grilled chicken, fried catfish, and meatloaf with Creole Bourbon ketchup and finishing up with sides like collards, grits, and sweet potato souffle. In addition to the restaurant , the building is also home to top-floor hangout Moon Roof Bar and cozy downstairs bar and music venue Dark Side of the Moon.

Go Paddling on the Etowah River Trail

For those who love to get out on the water, spend an afternoon kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boarding on the Etowah River between Grizzard Park and Heritage Park. The easy six-mile route takes about 2.5 hours to complete and is easily accessible from Dixon Landing at Grizzard Park. Rentals can be found at River Ratz or The Canoe House .

Spend the Night in a Treehouse

Courtesy of Treeline Vacations

For a one-of-a-kind overnight adventure, book the Black Bear Treehouse by Treeline Vacations. Built near the highest point in Rome, atop Lavender Mountain, this private oasis offer stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding area and beautifully designed interior living space. You’ll feel like you’ve left reality and stepped straight into a fairytale after just a few minutes lounging on the treehouse’s back porch.

Hike the Historic Jackson Hill Trail System

There’s so much to see on the Jackson Hill Trail System , a public recreation area that includes winding trails; historic exhibits, landmarks, and interpretive markers; and a unique attraction called the Labyrinth of Rome . Before being redeveloped by the Works Progress Administration, this area was the location of Fort Norton, which was used during the Civil War. Today, the public is invited to learn about the area’s history, enjoy the natural beauty, and maybe even find some time for meditation as they wander along the labyrinth’s singular path.

13 Incredible Things To Do In Beautiful Rome, Georgia

places to visit in rome georgia

  • Destinations
  • United States

The story is told that five names of European cities were placed in a bag, and a designated person drew Rome out of that bag. From that point forward, the town has carried that name. When you visit, you will see some significant similarities to its Italian counterpart. The most noticeable geographical factor is the presence of seven hills, and if you pass the historic City Hall, you will see a statue of the Capitoline Wolf with Romulus and Remus from Roman mythology. The statue was a gift from the Roman governor sent to the Georgian city in 1929.

Founded in 1834 and incorporated as a city in 1847, Rome, Georgia, has developed into a city with a strong identity built on education and the contributions of outstanding people. It is a wonderful place to spend several days, and here are my recommendations for incredible things to do while you are there.

Note: My visit was sponsored in part by RomeGeorgia.org, but all opinions are my own.

1. Broad Street

Broad Street is the hub of Rome’s downtown and is indeed “broad.” To be exact, it is the second broadest street in Georgia . Both sides are lined with interesting shops and eateries. Harvest Moon, John Henry’s, Honeymoon Bakery, Schroeder’s New Deli, and Ana’s by the River are just a few of the casual, locally owned restaurants, and La Scala Mediterranean is an upscale choice. The newest is a coffee and tea shop called The Sharp Sickle. Their gluten-free pastries are delicious.

Pro Tips: On-street parking allows 3 hours with no charge. Well-placed garages allow for long-term parking. The Roman Chariot is a free downtown shuttle that runs on Fridays and Saturdays.

American Flag Bridge where couples place love locks.

2. The American Flag Bridge

The American Flag Bridge is a stunning sight with its lights reflecting on the river at night, but romantic couples visit during all hours of the day and night. The idea is to buy a padlock, engrave or somehow mark your name or initials on it, then attach it to the bridge, and throw the key into the river, symbolizing everlasting love. Even more special is the fact that the bridge crosses the place where the Etowah and Oostanaula Rivers meet to form the Coosa River.

Pro Tip: The best place to park to visit the bridge safely is behind Moe’s BBQ on West 1st Street.

Water wheel on the campus of Berry College.

3. Berry College: The World’s Largest College Campus

Berry College has the world’s largest campus with its expansive 27,000+ acres. Since there are slightly more than 2,000 students, that means they have the privilege of enjoying 188 miles of trails, abundant wildlife, small class sizes, and helpful access to their professors. Three things you will want to find when you visit are the Old Mill (a 42-foot-tall overshot water wheel), the Possum Trot Church, and the nest of bald eagles.

Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Rome.

4. Myrtle Hill Cemetery

Myrtle Hill Cemetery is a beautiful place to visit the graves of significant people in Rome’s history. Near the entrance, you will find the grave of Charles W. Graves, selected as American’s “Known Soldier” from World War I. He died and was buried in France in 1918, brought home and buried in Antioch Church cemetery in 1922, then buried for the final time at Mrytle Hill when a memorial garden was created.

Former First Lady Ellen Axson Wilson, wife of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, is buried at Myrtle Hill, as well as Dr. Robert Battey — who performed the world’s first oophorectomy — and the Gammon Family. Rosalind Gammon is credited with saving college football in the state of Georgia.

Turtle at the ECO Center.

5. Rome-Floyd E.C.O. Center

Located on the grounds of Ridge Ferry Park, the E.C.O. Center is an educational facility visited by thousands of students each year. In addition to a 2,700-gallon aquarium holding fish that are native to the area, there are also snakes, turtles, and alligators housed inside the former pumping station built in 1893. A wetlands demonstration area has been incorporated outdoors within a short walk of the center. Admission is free.

Portrait of Martha Berry inside Oak Hill.

6. Martha Berry Museum And Oak Hill

Martha McChesney Berry was born in 1865 and died in 1942. She was barely 5 feet tall, never married, and never had children of her own. However, she left an indelible mark on Rome, Georgia, and the lives of countless students through her commitment to education and her ability to convince benefactors such as Henry Ford to make her ideas and dreams come true. A tour of Oak Hill, the former family home, and the Martha Berry Museum will inform and inspire you.

Pro Tip: Many scenes in the popular movie Sweet Home Alabama were filmed at Oak Hill. Your tour guide will describe them for you. Imagine Reece Witherspoon in that setting.

Exterior of Rome Area History Center.

7. Rome Area History Center

The Rome Area History Center has an excellent location in a very visible corner of Broad Street. The display presents a timeline of Rome’s growth from its beginnings to the present, and Director Selena Tilly is a wealth of information who is happy to answer questions and share insider information. The gift shop has beautiful items representing Rome, such as artwork, jewelry, ornaments, clothing items, and home décor.

8. Best Restaurants In Rome

Rome has numerous chain restaurants, but if you like supporting local businesses, you can find some delicious options. I had a chance to try Provino’s Italian Restaurant with its many pasta dishes, signature salad, and garlic rolls. Blue Fin has great sushi, and Blossom Hill BBQ & Burgers serves beef grown at Berry College. I also heard great reviews for Las Palmas Mexican, Aventine Rome, and Pick O Deli Cafeteria, but there are dozens more that assure a wide variety to suit all preferences.

Pro Tip: A convenient and comfortable place to stay while you are in Rome is Hampton Inn & Suites on West 1st Street. It is only a few blocks from Broad Street.

Clocktower on Neely Hill in Rome.

9. Clocktower

Events are planned throughout 2022 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Clocktower. People of Rome have been synchronizing their watches to match this clock for a long time. It stands on Neely Hill, one of Rome’s seven hills, and there are 107 steps to the top for the best view in town. Be sure to stop by the Rome Area History Center for a list of the year’s events. Otherwise, it is open for public tours on the first Saturday of every month in the summer. Once inside, you will find a mural museum.

10. Play Tennis Or Pickleball

Rome Tennis Center at Berry College has 51 courts and plays host to numerous tournaments and matches throughout the year. In addition, the Downtown Tennis & Pickleball Center has an additional 14 lighted tennis courts and 6 courts dedicated to pickleball, a sport that is rapidly gaining popularity. Bring your racquet and reserve a time at one of these beautiful facilities.

11. Chieftains Museum

To fully grasp the history of the Rome region, a visit to Chieftains Museum on Riverside Parkway is a must. The museum’s director, Heather Shores, is passionate about the story of Major Ridge and the way cultures impact one another. Major Ridge was a Cherokee chief who fought alongside General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He was awarded the rank of major for his bravery and success in the battle, and from that point forward, Ridge claimed it as his first name.

Ridge came to the site in 1819 and started farming 200 acres with the help of 30 slaves, some of whom were Choctaw Indians. He became wealthy by adding two businesses: a ferry (which explains the name of Ridge Ferry Park) and a trading post. The original house on the site was a two-story log cabin that was expanded as his wealth grew. You will want to hear about his contributions to the Cherokee people and his connection to the Trail of Tears.

Pro Tip: The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.

12. Trails And Parks Of Rome

Trails are everywhere around Rome. The Heritage Riverways Trail System offers 16.5 miles of paved paths along the three rivers. Garrard Park has 5.1 miles of trails, and Mount Berry Trail adds another 1.8 miles. Campers will want to check out Cedar Creek Park, Lock and Dam Park, Pocket & Chattahoochee National Forest, Brushy Branch RV Park, and Rocky Mountain Recreation Area. Be sure to pack your walking shoes or bring your bike and camping gear if you want to explore the great outdoors of Rome.

13. Town Of Cave Spring

A short drive from Rome, but still in Floyd County, you will find the town of Cave Spring, which was incorporated 2 years before Rome was founded in 1832. The town loves gathering for events downtown or at Rolater Park throughout the year, but any time you can browse the stores and eat in the restaurants, you should. Southern Flavor is a meat-and-three place for lunch. Linde Marie’s Steakhouse serves dinner, and Local Joe’s serves up good barbecue, to name a few.

Pro Tip: The Mexican cornbread at Southern Flavor is wonderful, and Christa’s Etc. is filled to the brim with antiques, collectibles, and jewelry.

15 Best Things to Do in Rome (GA)

Rome is the largest city in Floyd County, which sits on the state border with Alabama, and also the largest in the whole of northwest Georgia.

Located in the foothills of the famed Appalachian Mountains, its abundance of waterways first attracted Creek and Cherokee peoples.

European settlers arrived in the 1830s, forcing native Americans from their land, and Rome developed over seven hills just like its Italian namesake.

A trading hub since its earliest days, the city has adapted to modern industries, making it a thriving community blending past, present, and future.

Here are the 15 best things to do in and around Rome Georgia.

1. Chieftains Museum

Chieftains Museum

Officially known as Chieftains Museum / Major Ridge Home, this attractive clapboard building was the home of Major Ridge, a Cherokee leader who negotiated the ceding of ancestral land to the United States.

He did this because he believed it was the better of two evils – the other being the land forcefully taken from his people.

However, he eventually paid for this decision with his life, being assassinated by other members of the Cherokee nation.

This history is detailed in the museum, which has its origins in a smaller log house dating right back to 1792, just a few years after the American declaration of independence.

It forms a stop on the Cherokee Trail of Tears, which links sites associated with the removal of this people from their ancestral lands.

2. Historic Clock Tower

Historic Clock Tower, Rome

Located on Neely (also known as Tower) Hill, Rome Clock Tower was built in 1871 as a water tower, which explains its slightly unusual appearance.

Its water tank was almost 20 metres tall by eight metres wide, and capable of holding close to one million litres.

Its four-faced clock was added only a year later, with each face more than two metres in diameter.

Visitors are welcome to climb the 107 steps that spiral around the inside of the tower to a viewing platform offering stunning views across the city.

The former water tanks are used to display the works of local artists.

3. Myrtle Hill Cemetery

Myrtle Hill Cemetery

Located on another of Rome’s seven hills is Myrtle Hill Cemetery, a burial place that is significantly linked with major points in the city’s history.

Containing the remains of more than 20,000 people, the cemetery was used to bury soldiers that died during the American Civil War. this includes several hundred who fought on the Confederate side.

Its Veterans Plaza also contains the Tomb of the Known Soldier, one of few US troops who fought during the First World War to be buried in home soil. The plot of Private Charles Graves is marked out by three Maxim guns from the period.

Myrtle Hill Cemetery also contains the grave of Ellen Axson, the first wife of President Woodrow Wilson. She grew up in the city and is the only First Lady buried in Georgia to date.

4. Rome Area History Museum

Rome, Georgia

The Rome Area History Museum occupies a magnificent red brick building on the banks of the Oostanaula River immediately before it joins the Etowah to form the Coosa River.

It’s displays and artifacts lead visitors through the history of the city and the surrounding county, with exhibition spaces dedicated to the most important times in the area’s past.

Its collection of historic documents, photographs, maps and personal items concentrates on European settlement of the area, since the Chieftains Museum describes the region’s native American heritage.

It has important spaces dedicated to the Civil War period, and the agricultural way of life that lasted well into the twentieth century.

5. Rome Braves

Rome Braves

Rome is home to a minor league baseball team known as the Rome Braves.

Though a step below the major league teams that have become household names throughout the world, such as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, a baseball game at the Braves’ home ground is still an amazing insight.

Probably the biggest sport in the nation, tickets to a game will reveal the modern traditions and culture of the United States in all their glory, and the pride people have in their home states and cities too.

6. Between the Rivers Historic District

Robert Redden Foot Bridge

Centered around Broad Street, the Between the Rivers Historic District has a cluster of surviving structures from Rome’s Victorian era. Both private residences and commercial premises are represented.

While just a few blocks long and a similar number wide, together they form the largest area of Victorian properties anywhere in Georgia.

Among them, you’ll find a whole range of boutiques and antiques shops, as well as restaurants that make the perfect stopping point for either lunch or dinner.

On the Oostanaula River side of the district there’s also the Lock Bridge (or the Robert Redden Foot Bridge) to look out for.

Once a swing bridge that was an integral part of the Central Georgia Railway, cross it and you can join the riverside walks up and down the river that form the Heritage Trail System.

7. Appalachian Mountains

Blue Ridge Mountains

Stretching all the way from Alabama to New York State, the Appalachian Mountains are one of the world’s greatest mountain ranges.

And with Rome located amid their foothills, it would be a terrible shame not to explore some of what they have to offer while in the Georgia city.

The nearest sites to Rome are the Coosa Valley, and northern Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains.

Here, on Springer Mountain, lies the southern trail head of the famous Appalachian Trail, which runs for about 2150 miles and takes around six months to complete.

If that sort of time is unavailable to you, the summit of Springer Mountain can be reached in 8.6 miles from the visitor center at Amicalola Falls State Park.

This is approximately 1.5 hours from Rome by road.

8. Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum

Oak Hill & The Martha Berry Museum

While the name of educator Martha Berry might not be known outside of the Rome area, that shouldn’t stop you exploring the museum bearing her name and the surrounding grounds and farmhouse.

Altogether the site covers almost 70 hectares around a Greek Revival style mansion. The original farmhouse from 1847 was used as a barracks by Union soldiers during the Civil War’s Atlanta Campaign. It was then rebuilt in its current form, when it became a school.

The extensive gardens include an All-American Selections Display of plants, as well as various historic structures that formed the first school rooms on the site.

9. Etowah Indian Mounds

Etowah Indian Mounds

Lining the north bank of the Etowah River, Etowah Indian Mounds is an archaeological site which was inhabited by the Mississippi Culture of native Americans between 1000 and 1500 AD.

Considered one of the most intact sites in this part of the United States, it has three main grass-covered platform mounds and a further three smaller mounds.

The tallest is almost 20 metres high, making it equivalent to a six-story building, and was once believed to have been topped with a series of ceremonial structures.

In addition, the site contains a museum displaying the most important discoveries made here. These include stone statues, jeweler, and pottery.

Etowah Indian Mounds is just 30 minutes south of Rome following Highway 411.

10. Rome Axe Throwing

Axe Throwing

For something a little different, how about a little axe throwing? A great way to let off some steam and learn a new skill at the same time, axe throwing is becoming increasingly popular.

At Rome Axe Throwing, coaches are always on hand to demonstrate the technique required to get your axes to lodge into the hardwood targets, so what are you waiting for?

11. Statue of Romulus and Remus

Downtown Rome, Georgia, is a fantastic place and one of the best parts of Rome. Downtown consists of Broad Street and the surrounding area, where visitors will find shopping, restaurants, museums, live entertainment, and special events held year-round. There is always something to do and see in the downtown area of Rome, Georgia.

Historical Homes

The “Between the Rivers” historic district is located all around the hill on which the Clock Tower sits. It is directly behind Broad Street. It gets its name because it is situated between the Etowah and Oostanaula Rivers: two of the three rivers that run through Rome. This area features some of the most stunning Victorian houses around. Due to their unique beauty and historical significance, many homes have been featured in movies, magazines, and news articles. You can take a self-guided tour by picking up a map at Georgia’s Rome Welcome Center behind the Rome Area History Museum or the Last Stop Gift Shop.

Myrtle Hill Cemetary

Myrtle Hill Cemetary is one of the most visited spots in Rome. It is a fantastic place that radiates Rome’s rich history. Established in 1857, it is the second oldest cemetery in Rome. The cemetery sits at the end of Broad Street, overlooking the spot where the Etowah and Oostanala Rivers meet to form the Coosa River. It is one of the seven hills that make up the Rome area. From the top of Myrtle Hill, you can see the downtown area. I have seen some fantastic pictures taken from atop the hill. There is also a lot of history to be learned at Myrtle Hill. You can stop by the Rome-Floyd Visitor Center or the Downtown Welcome Center behind the Rome Area History Museum and pick up a map for a self-guided tour.

Another popular activity to do downtown is a bar tour. During a bar tour, you visit several bars and try a variety of craft beers. It is not a drinking game, and the goal is not to get drunk; it is more of a refined appreciation of craft-made beer. You can find Craft Beer at many locations in the downtown area.

If you ever get a chance to ride the downtown trolley, please do so. One evening, we hopped on the trolley and rode down Broad Street. It was so neat! The driver was friendly and talked to us about things going on that weekend. Now I know I live in Rome and travel up and down Broad Street almost daily, but this was a great experience and a completely different point of view.

When planning a trip to Rome, first-time visitors usually want to check the Colosseum and the Vatican off their lists, throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, and indulge in heaping plates of pasta, pizza, and gelato. And while those things are all worth doing, there’s so much more to do in the Eternal City.

Just consider that aside from the Vatican, Rome is home to more than 900 churches — and many of them contain precious works of art. And the Colosseum is just one of many archeological sites where you can learn more about the Roman Empire. But Rome is far from stuck in the past, and some of the best things to do include seeing modern and contemporary art exhibitions, admiring 1930s architecture, spotting street art, and checking out the city’s swanky new hotels.

Of course, Romans are passionate about food and wine, and everyone has their favorite places for pizza, pasta, gelato, coffee, wine, and cocktails. In fact, it would be easy to plan a whole trip to Rome around meals and aperitivos. You could start your day with a cappuccino at an old-school café, twirl spaghetti carbonara, sip an Aperol spritz at a rooftop bar, eat award-winning pizza, and sample some of the city’s most unusual gelato flavors all in a day.

Having lived in Rome for nearly five years and having visited many times before that, I’ve tried to take advantage of every chance I can get to visit the best museums and archeological sites, explore under-the-radar neighborhoods, peek inside aristocratic palaces, see masterpieces inside churches, and eat my way across the city. But don’t take it from me — I’ve also tapped a couple of in-the-know locals who run some of Rome’s best tour companies for their recommendations. Read on for the 20 best things to do in Rome.

Visit archeological sites beyond the Colosseum.

Tomás Guardia Bencomo/Getty Images

As an archeologist and CEO of the luxury tour company Roma Experience , Elisa Valeria Bove knows all the best archeological sites in and around Rome. Her personal favorite? The Appia Antica and Quintili’s Villa , which is found along the ancient Roman road. “Once called the 'road of fire', for me it is the road of wonders,” she says, calling it “the most romantic and imposing archeological site of Rome.” About a half-hour drive outside the center of Rome, these sites draw only a tiny fraction of the amount of people that crowd the Colosseum, so visiting them is a much more relaxed experience.

Embrace the coffee culture.

piola666/Getty Images

“Every Italian has their neighborhood bar, and Retrobottega is mine,” says Annie Ojile, who runs the Vespa tour company Scooteroma and has been living in Rome for more than 15 years. “I like to have a cold coffee, especially in the summer months, so I’ve fallen in love with espresso tonic, which is espresso on ice with tonic water. It’s fabulous and refreshing.”

For an old-school Italian coffee bar, Bove recommends La Tazza d’Oro near the Pantheon, which opened in 1944 and still roasts its own beans. “In the summer you can have an amazing coffee granita with whipped cream — exactly what’s needed during a tour,” she says.

See artistic treasures at the world’s oldest museum.

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

While the Vatican Museums may be more famous, the Capitoline Museums atop the Capitoline Hill are actually the oldest museum in the world. “Crossing each room, you have a clear idea of the grandiosity of the Roman civilization, from the monarchy, passing through the republic and imperial eras,” says Bove, calling it “the evolution of Rome in one museum — a trip within a trip.” Don’t miss the incredible panoramas of the Roman Forum.

Try the quartet of Roman pastas.

The most classic Roman pastas are essentially variations of the same recipe. Cacio e pepe is made with just pecorino and pepper. Add guanciale (pork cheek) and you’ve got la gricia . Add an egg to la gricia and you’ve got carbonara . Substitute tomato sauce for the egg and you’ve got amatriciana . Try them all at a quintessentially Roman restaurant like Da Enzo al 29 , Checco Er Carettiere , or Salumeria Roscioli and decide which one is your favorite.

Picnic in the shadow of ancient aqueducts.

TFILM/Getty Images

On sunny days — especially weekends and public holidays — locals love to pack a picnic or pop into a deli to grab a sandwich and head out to one of the city’s green, leafy parks. While the most famous and centrally located park is the Villa Borghese, the Parco degli Acquedotti is a local favorite — and you can reach it on the metro. “A stroll here is stepping into the past, a perfect place for a picnic, to run or cycle,” says Bove. “The owners of this spot are the aqueducts: six of the 11 of the ancient city of Rome can be admired in this charming location.”

Shop for local souvenirs.

Courtesy of Booktique

Skip the ubiquitous shops selling cheap souvenirs made elsewhere and support small local businesses instead. “What I love about Booktique is that the owners’ history is with books and museum shops and they have a way to present all their treasures in a very interesting, cheeky, chic way,” says Ojile. “I buy every single gift there, and I’m not exaggerating at all. I also buy myself many gifts there — candles, hand soap, art for my house, canvas bags.” Booktique has two locations near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona.

Find all the Caravaggios in Rome.

Michelangelo Merisi (better known as Caravaggio) was one of the masters of Baroque painting. He was particularly known for using a technique called chiaroscuro , which is essentially the dramatic contrast between light and dark. There are about 25 of his works in Rome, many of which can be seen in museums such as Galleria Borghese , Palazzo Barberini , and the aforementioned Capitoline Museums, as well as churches like San Luigi dei Francesi, Santa Maria del Popolo, and Sant’Agostino. You could go on a treasure hunt looking for them all.

Stroll down Via Margutta, the artists’ street.

adisa/Getty Images

Tucked away between the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo, the charming, cobblestoned Via Margutta is known as the artists’ street because historically, it was a hub for artists, including Picasso, and there are still many art galleries there today. Bove calls it, “A peaceful place in the heart of Rome, just a few minutes from the crowded Spanish Steps, to get lost in the magnificent art galleries and discover the painters of Via Margutta.”

Via Margutta also has some fascinating cinematic history. Famed filmmaker Federico Fellini lived on this street (there’s a plaque on his building) and part of "Roman Holiday" starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck was filmed in the same apartment complex where Picasso lived. For a unique souvenir, stop by La Bottega del Marmoraro , where artisan Sandro Fiorentino still carves marble plaques by hand — many with witty phrases.

Visit a winery on the outskirts of the city.

Courtesy of Tenuta di Fiorano

Did you know there are vineyards and wineries on the edges of Rome? Bove’s favorite, Tenuta di Fiorano , is owned by Prince Alessandrojacopo Boncompagni Ludovisi. “It doesn’t happen every day that a prince welcomes you in his estate like an old friend,” she remarks. “I always admired the will he has to respect the history of his family and the territory where he decided to plant his vineyard, creating one of the excellences of Italy.”

Try unusual gelato flavors.

krblokhin/Getty Images

There are plenty of excellent gelaterias all over the city, but to taste some unusual flavors, you have to go to Torcè . “They have these unusual flavors like black sesame. I tried their tomato gelato, which is excellent with mozzarella. Torcè has done phenomenal things,” says Bove. In addition to their award-winning Majani chocolate gelato, they make savory flavors like gorgonzola, carbonara, and cacio e pepe.

Go street art hunting.

Marilla Sicilia/Archivio Marilla Sicilia/Mondadori Portfolio via Getty Images

“Street art has an expiration date — you never know how long the piece is going to last — so it’s always fun to go find new pieces,” says Ojile. “I just love gliding over the cobblestones on my cherry red wheels and making random stops when I find new or revisit old pieces of street art.” Ojile recommends exploring neighborhoods like Testaccio, Ostiense, and Garbatella, where there’s a proliferation of murals and paste art. You can also see some cool street art in San Lorenzo and Pigneto, which are two of the city’s most up-and-coming neighborhoods.

See an ancient monument and modern art at the Ara Pacis.

Photo Beto/Getty Images

“The year after I moved to Rome, they started building the Ara Pacis and I will always remember that there was this big scandal because it was the first new piece of architecture to be built in the historic center since Mussolini’s era,” Ojile recalls. The sleek, white building was designed by Richard Meier to house the ancient Altar of Peace built for Emperor Augustus. Upstairs you can see the ancient altar, while the lower level shows rotating exhibitions dedicated to modern art, design, cinema, or photography. “Now I live five minutes from it and they have really stellar photography shows and exhibitions and I absolutely love it. I go to every show,” Ojile says.

Peek inside aristocratic palaces.

sndr/Getty Images

Want to see how Roman nobility lived? A handful of aristocratic palaces have been opened up as museums, allowing visitors to glimpse at their incredible art collections and opulent décor. Palazzo Colonna , which was a filming location for "Roman Holiday," is open on Friday and Saturday mornings. Palazzo Doria Pamphilj , meanwhile, has a gorgeous hall of mirrors inspired by the one at Versailles. Villa Farnesina in Trastevere contains breathtaking frescoes by Raphael.

Have an aperitivo at a rooftop bar.

At the end of the day, there are few experiences as magical as sipping a drink while watching the sunset over the city’s terracotta rooftops. Luckily Rome has plenty of rooftop bars to choose from. Bove’s pick is Otivm Roof Bar overlooking the Capitoline Hill, while Ojile raves about Terrazza Flores above El Porteño, a chic Argentinian restaurant. “This is where you’ll find me this summer soaking in the gorgeous views and sipping on my Porteño cocktail,” she says.

Try one of the city’s new wave of pizzerias.

Courtesy of Seu Pizza Illuminati

Pizza never went out of style, but lately there are more and more pizzerias upping the ante with creative offerings and top-notch quality. Rome has 10 pizzerias ranked among the best in Italy by the judges at Top 50 Pizza. Among the top are Seu Pizza Illuminati in Trastevere, which serves gourmet Neapolitan-style pizza by Pier Daniele Seu; 180 Grammi in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Centocelle, where pizzaiolo Jacopo Mercuro makes thin-crust Roman pizza with all kinds of creative toppings; and Sbanco , where the dough is somewhere in between Neapolitan and Roman style and the fritti (fried appetizers) are divine.

Sip cutting-edge cocktails at Drink Kong.

Courtesy of Drink Kong

For Ojile, a perfect night out starts with dinner in Monti at a restaurant like Rocco or La Taverna dei Fori Imperiali and ends at Drink Kong , which is ranked as one of the world’s 50 best bars. “It’s like an ‘80s dreamland with amazing cocktails,” she notes. The aesthetic is inspired by Japanese film noir and the wildly creative drinks are dreamt up by Irish-Italian bartender Patrick Pistolesi, who has been a fixture on the city’s nightlife scene for decades.

Book a stay at a luxury hotel.

Courtesy of Bulgari Hotel Roma

Rome is having a hospitality renaissance , with one luxe five-star hotel opening after the next. Some of the buzziest recent openings include It List hotel the Six Senses Rome , a sleek, modern hotel for wellness and sustainability-minded travelers; the Bulgari Hotel Rome , known for its gorgeous design and restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Niko Romito; the Rome Edition , which occupies a Rationalist building near Via Veneto and has a restaurant by the team behind cult-favorite spot Pianostrada (also on the It List); and Anantara Palazzo Naiadi , which has a cool rooftop restaurant and a gourmet restaurant on the ground floor.

Venture out to EUR.

Pino Pacifico/REDA&CO/Universal Images Group via Getty Images

The neighborhood known as EUR on the southern edge of Rome is a must-see destination for fans of 1930s and ‘40s Rationalist architecture. Mussolini built the neighborhood for the Esposizione Universale Romana of 1942, which never took place because of the Second World War. The most alluring building, architecturally speaking, is the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana (better known as the Colosseo Quadrato, or Square Colosseum), which now houses Fendi’s headquarters. EUR is also home to an amusement park called Luneur Park , the Nuvola Convention Center , and a location of Torcè.

See the Cinecittà Film Studios.

Gianmarco Dettori/Getty Images

Rome was once known as “Hollywood on the Tiber” because so many movies were filmed here. While some were filmed on location, many were shot at Cinecittà Studios , which is still an active filming studio. Part of it is open to visitors, including several exhibitions dedicated to film history (there’s one all about Fellini). You can visit the exhibitions on your own or sign up for a guided tour to learn more about the studio’s history and see the set of HBO’s Rome .

Sample wine at an enoteca.

Cavan Images/Getty Images

An enoteca is essentially just a wine bar, but they can range from simple and spartan to classy, elegant affairs. They usually have a wide selection of bottles and often a good variety of wines by the glass. Some just have small bites like meat and cheese boards, while others have full menus. For the best enoteca in Rome, Bove recommends Achilli al Parlamento , saying they have “an incredible selection of wine labels at cost price. If you are a lover of great wines, you can’t skip this place.”

Wander down Main Street, browse Huck’s General Store, which sells a little bit of everything, or pick up some fishing gear at Oyster Bamboo, where Jimmy Carter liked to shop. For dinner, reserve a table at Harvest on Main for locally sourced ingredients, seasonal veggies, and craft beer.

The beautiful town of Helen, Georgia.

Georgia may seem a long way away from the country of Germany , but not for visitors to Helen. With only about 622 full-time residents and 2.1 square miles, and modeled after a Bavarian alpine village, Helen is nestled in the North Georgia mountains. Visitors can explore cobblestone streets with half-timbered buildings, colorful facades, and flower-filled window boxes reminiscent of a German fairy tale (minus the ghastly ending). Main Street offers a variety of shops where visitors can find unique gifts like German cuckoo clocks and beer steins at Bavarian Clockworks, as well as locally crafted Christmas ornaments, nesting dolls, and snow globes at The Christmas Shoppe.

Helen is also home to vibrant events and festivals, including the famous Oktoberfest, which runs from September 5 through October 27, 2024, and is the longest-running Oktoberfest celebration in the U.S. But visitors don’t have to wait until October to enjoy authentic Bavarian cuisine. The Heidelberg, a three-story German restaurant, pub, and newly-renovated music hall, was the first German restaurant to open in Helen, and today still serves its famous pretzels, bratwurst, schnitzel, and beer.

Overlooking downtown Madison, Georgia.

Madison is a picturesque town in Georgia's historic heartland, renowned for its well-preserved antebellum homes and manicured gardens. The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center is housed in a restored 1895 Romanesque Revival building in Madison, which, along with several other cities, including Milledgeville, Athens , and Washington , make up Georgia's “Historic Heartland.” The Madison History Museum displays a rich array of exhibits and artifacts that showcase the town's historical and cultural heritage and strategic importance during the Civil War. Examples of well-preserved Greek Revival-style mansions include the Joshua Hill House and Rogers House. Heritage tourism is a big industry in Madison, so be sure to look into guided walking tours, historic home tours, and carriage rides to learn more about the town's Civil War history and its prominent residents.

Visit Madison's town square, surrounded by quaint shops, boutiques, cafés, and restaurants housed in historic storefronts. Stroll along brick-paved streets, browse antique shops like Madison Antiques Market & Interiors and J&K Fleas An’Tiques, and stop at local eateries like Oconee Coffee Roasters.

Each of these eight inviting towns is a tribute to Georgia’s distinctive charm, well-preserved architecture, and rich history. With a mix of Southern hospitality, cultural attractions, and outdoor activities, each town is ideal for visitors seeking picturesque settings and engaging experiences. From historic landmarks and scenic landscapes to vibrant downtowns and annual festivals, these towns extend Georgia’s open invitation to visit.

How to Get Around Rome

Getting around the cobbled-stoned streets of Rome is not hard. I’ve walked, biked, and bused throughout Rome and loved it! All are great ways to get around and the method you choose depends on how much time you have and your personal preference.

I recommend the  Big Bus Tour  or a Golf Cart Tour in Rome if you are short on time or if you booked your travel in the dead heat of summer (which can be intensely hot).

With these tours, you’ll see all the top Rome attractions with audio commentary in your language of choice. If you choose an open top tour bus, the added benefit is free wi-fi and for 3 extra euros, you can use your ticket for two days (it is worth it).

When it comes to seeing Rome, walking can not be avoided especially when getting to an attraction that require climbing hilly pathways or navigating ancient streets. In my opinion, being on foot is one of the best ways to travel in Rome.

Exploring the narrow streets can lead you to the most marvelous pasta, the creamiest gelato, or the most perfect pasta! I highly recommend visiting the Trastevere neighborhood for  Italian street food .

Public Transportation

This is the best option for getting to a part of town that is more than 20 minutes on foot, especially if visiting a museum or park. Save your energy and use public transportation for less than 2 euros. You can purchase them at the tobacconist store.

You will need to validate your ticket upon boarding the bus (it’s an honor system). Getting caught with an un-validated ticket can result in a fine. You should also use a really good map of Rome.

Bike or Vespa

Peddling around the city on your own time feels so liberating. Bike rental is very affordable and is an enjoyable way to experience the outdoors, get some exercise to make up for all the  Italian breakfasts  that you eat, and explore Rome.

You can find rentals for as little as 13 euros for 24 hours, complete with lock, for a standard bike. The price for e-bikes is higher.

Getting around on a two-passenger scooter is loads of fun!  Rent a Vespa to skirt traffic or explore outside the city. They can be rented by the hour or day. This will make your trip to Rome memorable as you travel in true Italian style!

How to Get to Central Rome from FCO Airport

There are several options to get from Leonardo da Vinci International Airport to the center of the city. I found the train to be the quickest and most affordable especially if you’ve had a long day of travel and want to get to Termini station.

The most economical way to get from the airport to the city center is via a shuttle bus service from the airport. You can travel conveniently between Rome’s city center and the airport and take pleasure in a stress-free arrival or departure from the city.

The ride takes about 50 minutes and departures run from the airport every 30 to 40 minutes so you have time to collect your luggage. Shuttles stop in Terminal 3’s arrivals section. Look for the respective service at the arrival platform.

Terravision offers a shuttle service for less than 8 euros it’s quite popular. The buses are air-conditioned and there is no cost to bring your luggage aboard. It goes directly to Termini station with no extra stops.

Another option is the public transportation system, which costs about 6 euros. The bus stops multiple times in the city center, including one close to the Vatican and one at Termini Station, throughout the 45- to 1-hour one-way trip.

Buses halt in Terminal 3’s arrivals section, at number 14. You can purchase tickets at the airport desk or online.

A taxi is quite expensive. It will set you back almost 50 euros and the ride takes just as long as a shuttle service (about 50 minutes). You can find the taxis at the arrival level of Terminal 1 and Terminal 3.

The Leonardo Express train is less than 20 euros and runs every 15 minutes during peak periods. It is operated by Trenitalia and the ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

If you wait to collect your luggage, and then make your way to the window or kiosk to purchase your ticket, note that many others will be doing the same. Hate long lines? You can purchase tickets in advance and be ready for validation after boarding the train.

I can’t recommend a car rental unless you plan a day trip and need a set of wheels. Rome is completely walkable. Not to mention, even Italians know that finding a parking space can be a hassle.

Tips for Visiting Rome

I adore visiting Italy. And no trip would be complete without seeing some of the most iconic and historic spots in the Eternal City.

Don’t make the mistake (that I made on my first trip) and skip these incredible spots! Fortunately, I was able to see them on return visits!

Whether you are visiting the Vatican for the first time or returning because you tossed a coin into the Trevi fountain, these Rome travel tips will come in handy to make your stay enjoyable.

  • Be prepared! Read these tips on the essentials for an international flight .
