1. Visit the Chocolate Hills

Chocolate Hills in Bohol, Philippines

No trip to Bohol is complete without seeing this iconic landmark, which is even featured in the local Philippine Peso currency . Bohol's claim to fame is the unique geological formation of over 1000 cone-shaped hills that change in color depending on the season – the  Chocolate Hills . You can view the hills from the Chocolate Hills Complex when you book Chocolate Hills tours . There’s a viewing deck with a stunning 360° view of the cone-shaped hills.

These giant mounds of chocolate-colored earth in the dry season turn green during the wet season. The hills are spread out on a 50-square kilometer land and vary in size.

  • Book  Chocolate Hills ATV tours
  • Brush up on Chocolate hills facts

According to local legends, the hills were created by two giants who got into a fight and threw boulders and rocks at each other. The mess they left after their battle is said to eventually lead to the formation of the hills that we know today. Another story says that the hills are tears of a heartbroken giant who fell in love with a mortal.

The third story, quite a funny one, is about a giant carabao that plagued the town and ate all the crops. The townspeople then fed it their spoiled food. When the carabao defecated, they dried up to become the hills.

In reality, the Chocolate Hills are conical karst hills that were formed by the uplift of coral deposits combined with rainwater and erosion. It's considered to be an extraordinary example of karst topography and is the main highlight of most Bohol excursions .

3. explore hinagdanan cave         .

Hinagdanan Cave features a pool of clear water at the bottom

The Hinagdanan Cave, one of the most beautiful caves in the Philippines , features a pool of clear water at the bottom. You can swim here under the mesmerizing sight of stalactites and stalagmites.

The word "hinagdanan" means laddered in Cebuano. This now-famous Bohol tourist destination is said to have been accidentally discovered by a farmer who built a ladder to access the cave, thus the name. The cave also holds historical significance as it was once used by locals to hide during World War II.

Only one person at a time can enter the 100-meter-long cave during a trip to Panglao Island. Be careful when traversing the trails, as they can get slippery because of the moisture inside the cave. Once you get inside, you will be treated to the breathtaking site of a freshwater lagoon that's about 10-12 meters deep.

The light filters through the nearby cave entrance, filling the whole area with a relaxing and otherworldly glow. It is not like any swim you've had before! Once you're done taking a dip, you can also check out the souvenir shops right outside the cave.

This beautiful river is a wonder of nature that has been preserved through the combined efforts of the local authorities and the residents. The scenic river that runs through multiple towns in Bohol is framed with lush tropical trees, perfect for winding down in the afternoon after your countryside tour.

The most popular activity here is the  Loboc River Cruise tour , where tourists board a floating restaurant. The boat cruise will drift along the serene 1.5km long river while you feast on a Filipino lunch buffet.

Tarsiers are nocturnal and considered the smallest primates in the world

Like the Chocolate Hills, the tarsiers and their big eyes are synonymous with Bohol as well. These nocturnal creatures are considered to be one of the smallest primates in the world.

They grow to be just 15 centimeters long at most, and they're just so cute! Tarsiers can also be found in other Philippine destinations like Samar, Leyte, and parts of Mindanao. But Bohol is known for its tarsier sanctuary tours that help preserve and raise awareness about these species.

If it's your first time in Bohol, don't miss a visit to the Tarsier Conservation Area in Loboc or the Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella. These tarsier sanctuaries allow tourists not just to see these small creatures up close, but also to learn more about them. When visiting the tarsiers, remember that they are nocturnal and are asleep during the day. You'll find them perched on branches around the sanctuaries. Make sure to keep the noise down because they're sensitive to sound.

Taking their photos is fine, but keep the flash turned off not to wake them up. Touching them is also a no-no because it will stress them out.

Another enchanting natural cave pool not to be missed in Anda, Bohol. It has a more shallow pool with just 4-5 feet deep water. The rock formations of the cave look like a chandelier that's why it's named after the word "kumbento" or convent.

Facade of the Baclayon Church in Bohol, Philippines

Go on an excursion and see some of the heritage churches in Bohol. You'll be able to catch a glimpse of how the locals devote their time during prayer. And learn about the remnants of the historical past through its architecture. Here are some of the must-see Bohol churches:

This is the oldest church in all of Asia and is a part of a Bohol countryside tour . It's impossible to proceed in the vein of historical churches without visiting this. The devastating earthquake of recent years damaged the original church, but through momentous efforts, the entire church has been rebuilt.

Officially called the Church of the Immaculate Concepcion, the church also has a museum with some religious artifacts. It's also pretty accessible since it's an easy drive from the Blood Compact site.

Officially named the Church of San Pedro, this church is the second oldest in the province. If you're looking for something like the Sistine Chapel, this is it — the church has excellent exteriors, complete with a heavenly scene painted on its ceiling! It's often included in a day trip in Bohol.

Also known as Our Lady of the Assumption, this church was built in 1697 and is dubbed by The National Historical Commission as a National Historic Landmark. Its neoclassical exteriors perfectly complement its stunning interiors, making it a must-visit church included in a Panglao tour.

The locals know this church as Panglao Church.  It's well-known for its ceiling paintings and marble floors. It's a church included in a sightseeing activity in Panglao.

One of the largest and most-frequented churches in Bohol, the Cathedral is made of ancient coral stone. It has undergone some facelifts, but you’ll still see the original pieces that are touchstones to the country’s religious history.

If you want to see more of Bohol’s colonial past, make sure to drop by this next tourist attraction. The Sandugo or Blood Compact Shrine monument found in Bo-ol district of Tagbilaran City is a landmark at the site of the first international treaty of friendship between Spaniards and Filipinos. It's a popular attraction included in a Bohol day trip.

This place represents a junction in our history that pretty much led to us being who we are now. The Blood Compact Shrine depicts Sikatuna and Legazpi at the famed "Sandugo" moment, as the former pledged allegiance to the latter. The National Artist makes it for Sculpture, Napoleon Abueva.

It is also an easy trip since it's just along the main roads you'll pass as you go around the city. You can hail a tricycle from the town proper and ride a bus from the Dao terminal. Ride the bus that goes through Barangay Bo-ol.

Tigbao Hanging Bridge is made of woven bamboo straps and stretches over a gently flowing river

You’ve crossed hanging bridges, but have you crossed one made entirely out of bamboo? This well-known hanging bridge often included in a sightseeing trip in Bohol is made of woven bamboo straps and stretches over a gently flowing river.

The locals know it as Tigbao Hanging Bridge. There's an entrance fee, but you get free access to the tourist spot if you join a sightseeing tour in Bohol as it's mostly included in the itinerary.

The Tigbao Hanging Bridge is located in Sevilla, Bohol. It's suspended 83 feet above the Loboc River and is the primary connection between two barangays in the town.

Crossing it might scare you at first, especially if you have a fear of heights. But fear not! It's safe and a unique way to get a whole perspective of the Loboc River.

To ease your mind about its structural integrity, the bridge has a set of cables that ensure its stability. Your reward for braving the heights and the wobbling? A souvenir shop at the other end.

It's pretty touristy, but hey, at least there's something! Whether you're a local finding new things to do, or you're a tourist wanting to experience everything extraordinary in Bohol, this is a must-add in your to-do list

13. Take photos at Bilar Man-Made Forest

Guy passing through the Bilar Man-Made Forest in a motorcycle

It was a successful project, as many laborers, government employees, locals, and even students helped each other plant the seedlings. The project covers 20,000 hectares in the towns of Loboc, Batuan, Carmen, Valencia, Jagna, Sierra Bullones, and more.

The Bilar Man-Made Forest often included in Bohol countryside tours  is great for a slow walk down a natural tunnel formed by the canopies of well-spaced trees. It's a tranquil place, so it's great if you're looking for a short pit stop before your next Bohol adventure, the forest is just north of it.

Relax and unwind at Bohol’s famous waterfalls. Take a dip in these gorgeous waterfalls accessible by public transportation or by joining a Bohol waterfalls escapade.

20 kilometers from Tagbilaran and found in the forest of Barangay Can-omay are hidden waterfalls called Mag-Aso Falls, named after ‘aso’ or smoke due to the drizzles resembling smoke that is formed from the strong drop of water.

Out of 20 waterfalls in Bohol, this waterfall is the most accessible from the capital Tagbilaran City and is also less crowded, as it is still not yet commercialized. It’s a must-try half-day tour in Bohol.

Just around an hour’s drive from Alona Beach is one of the most enchanting spots of nature anywhere in the region. The falls themselves are sparkling clean! Take a dip in its turquoise waters and admire the scenic view it offers. The place is quite popular, so expect some company while you’re here.

This waterfall is located at Balilihan, Bohol. It’s one of the highly-recommended waterfalls in the province because of its amphitheater-like cascading of waters. You can swim and laze around the waters for as long as you like!

There's also a Kawasan Falls in Bohol and not just the popular one in Cebu . This gorgeous waterfall has a high drop of 20 meters and is blessed with clean and aquamarine waters. The good news is it's included in most waterfalls tours in Bohol.

You can also reach Chocolate hills as a part of the Countryside Tour at an affordable price. These trips are quite popular in Bohol, and they’re an excellent way to learn about the island while staying safe. For more information and availability, click the button below:

2. Ride an ATV near the Chocolate Hills

Ride an ATV near the Chocolate Hills

This is probably the highlight of our trip. We highly recommend that you try this! You can ride an ATV around the Chocolate Hills. It’s a great way to see the hills up close and personal.

There are several ATV rentals around the area. The only difference is the trails. We decided to try Graham ATV Rental which was recommended by one of the locals we talked to.

The trails were a bit challenging but that’s what made it more fun! We highly recommend this activity if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush. Bring a change of clothes. There are muddy parts and expect that you’ll get splattered.

3. Spot Tarsiers at the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary

Tarsiers

Another popular tourist spot in Bohol is the Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary . This is where you can find the world’s smallest primates, the tarsiers.

These nocturnal animals are very sensitive to light so make sure to keep your voice down and avoid using flash photography. You wouldn’t want to startle them and cause them any stress.

The best time to see them is early in the morning or in the late afternoon. We went there early in the morning and saw three cute tarsiers. Super worth it!

They only charge P150 per person and the tour takes around 15 to 30 minutes depending on how many tarsiers you see.

Hinagdanan Cave

The Hinagdanan Cave is a must-see if you’re in Bohol. It’s a huge cavern with a hole in the ceiling that lets natural light in. There’s a lagoon inside and you can go for a swim.

It’s near the famous Mithi Resort so it’s easily accessible. Expect lots of tourists though as it’s a popular spot so make sure to visit early.

5. Cruise the Loboc River

Loboc River

Paddle boarding is the best way to cruise along the river. Head over to Stand Up Paddleboard Sports Center along Loboc River and choose from their available tours. This is a great way to see Bohol’s nature up close.

The Loboc River Cruise may be the most popular way to do it but I wouldn’t recommend it. We tried the river cruise with a buffet but the food was meh for the price. We paid P850 per person.

On the cruise, you’ll be serenaded by a live band playing local music. It’s a nice touch but we ended up having a headache because of how loud the speakers were. It’s hard to even hold a conversation with your companions. And since it’s a buffet, you can’t really enjoy the view with all the people walking around.

Reach it by tour

You can also reach the Loboc river as a part of the Countryside Tour at an affordable price. These trips are quite popular in Bohol, and they’re an excellent way to learn about the island while staying safe. For more information and availability, click the button below:

Island hopping is one of the best things to do in Bohol. You’ll get to see several beautiful islands and go snorkeling or swimming in their crystal clear waters.

There are a lot of tour companies that offer island hopping tours. We booked ours from one of the locals walking around Alona Beach. You can try haggling if the price is too high.

The joiner tours usually start at around 6:30 AM if you plan on going dolphin watching. If not, you can book a private boat so you can start at any time.

Pamilacan Island

Pamilacan Island

Pamilacan Island is known for its whale and dolphin-watching tours. It’s not usually added in island hopping tours but you can book a separate tour for it.

Alona Beach

Panglao Island is Bohol’s most popular beach destination. It’s famous for its white sand beaches and clear waters.

Alona Beach is the most popular beach on the island. It’s perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling. Dumaluan Beach is also a great spot for swimming and relaxing. This is my favorite beach on the island. Compared to Alona Beach, this place is less commercialized.

There are a lot of other great beaches in Panglao . You can find a complete list of Bohol’s beaches here.

10. Visit the Historic Churches

Baclayon Church

Bohol is known for its beautiful churches. They’re spread out all over the island so you’ll have to do some driving to visit them all. But it’s worth it!

Each church has its own unique features. The most popular ones are the Baclayon Church, the Loboc Church, and the Dauis Church. Here’s a list of 10 historic heritage churches in Bohol that you should visit.

Man-Made Forest

The Man-Made Forest is one of Bohol’s most popular attractions. It’s a stretch of road lined with mahogany trees.

The best time to visit is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun isn’t too hot.

Make sure to bring your camera so you can take photos of the beautiful scenery. You’ll often find a line of tourists wanting to take a photo with the forest as a backdrop.

If you’re planning to stop here for a photo op, get ready to run. Vehicles passing by are quite fast. It was a challenge to even take a decent photo when we went there.

Reach Man-Made Forest by tour

You can also reach Man-Made Forest as a part of the Countryside Tour at an affordable price. These trips are quite popular in Bohol, and they’re an excellent way to learn about the island while staying safe. For more information and availability, click the button below:

  • Busay Falls

14. Snorkel

Snorkeling in Balicasag

Bohol is surrounded by beautiful reefs and clear waters. This makes it a great place for snorkeling. There are several spots around the island where you can go snorkeling.

The most popular spot is the Balicasag Island Marine Sanctuary. It’s a 30-minute boat ride away from Panglao Island. The sanctuary is home to a lot of marine life. You’re sure to see plenty of colorful fish and corals when you go snorkeling here.

Napaling is another great spot for snorkeling. Here you’ll find a sardine run. This is where a large school of sardines swims by. It’s an amazing sight to see!

15. See the Cambuhat Oyster Farm

Cambuhat Oyster Farm

Cambuhat Oyster Farm is located in Buenavista. Here you get to see how oysters are grown. You can even eat the fresh oysters right from the farm! The tour is short but it’s interesting to see how oysters are grown.

16. Visit Nova Shell Museum

Nova Shell Museum

Nova Shell Museum is located in Panglao. It’s a small museum but it has a large collection of shells from all over the country. What amazed me the most were the big oyster shells that were apparently found in the mountains of Bohol.

17. Go on a Road Trip

Bohol has a lot of scenic routes that are perfect for a road trip. The most popular one is the Chocolate Hills Road Trip. This takes you to the Chocolate Hills, the Man-Made Forest, and the Tarsiers Sanctuary.

If you have more time, go drive around Sierra Bullones down to Jagna and enjoy the coastal view. Our Airbnb host was a big bike owner and loved going on road trips around the island suggested the route and it was one of the highlights of our trip!

Ryk and I started the trip in the morning from Panglao and headed to Loboc, Man-Made Forest, Chocolate Hills, then Sierra Bullones, and back to Panglao via the Jagna route. Don’t forget to stop in Dimiao for a burger at Woody’s Bar and Grill. It’s a must-try! They even have craft beers.

Here’s a short video of our Bohol trip featuring the road trip.

21. Go on a Food Trip

Bohol has a lot of delicious food to offer. Here are some we’d recommend you try.

  • Bohol Bee Farm – Homemade ice cream! Need I say more?
  • Footridge Food Park – Best to visit for dinner. You get live music and lots of food choices from several food stalls.
  • Giuseppe Pizzeria & Sicilian Roast – Pizza here is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Also, try their truffle pasta (I’m craving this one every now and then – super delicious!) and their lava cake (must-try)!
  • Myst – An insta-worthy restaurant but service can take a bit long. Avoid going during dinner. You’ll find yourself waiting in line for more than an hour.
  • Woody’s Bar and Grill – Yummy burgers especially when paired with their craft beers.

And if you pass by the Panglao public market, be on the lookout for the local puto.

Where We Stayed

During our 6-day trip to Bohol, we stayed at Bil-isan Tower Residences. We booked Bungalow 2 on Airbnb . I highly recommend this place if you love staying away from the crowds and with a sea view. It’s only 17 minutes away from Alona Beach but so worth it.

The place has 4 friendly dogs and every now and then, they’ll dip in the pool with you or ask to play fetch. Honestly, the dogs were what pushed us to book.

Bil-isan Tower Residences

If you love snorkeling, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a great snorkeling spot just a few meters away from the Airbnb. The hosts, Rowena and Peter, were also very accommodating. We loved every second of our stay.

1. Chocolate Hills

Tourist Spots in Bohol

The Chocolate Hills are the most well-known attraction on the island of Bohol. The majority of people think of them as Hershey’s Kisses, but there are really more than a thousand symmetrical mounds that are conical and dome-shaped. It is not because the terrain is composed of chocolate that it is referred to as the Chocolate Hills, rather, the name comes from the terrain’s brownish hue.

During the wet season, the hills take on the impression of being cushioned and lush due to the grass that covers them. They acquire their name from the browning of the flora that occurs throughout the summer months, when it dies off and takes on a chocolaty colour.

Chocolate Hills is one of the top Bohol tourist spot since it is so well-known that it is even depicted on the currency.

2. Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary

Philippine Tarsier and Wild Sanctuary. Popular Tourist Attractions in Bohol Philippines

The Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary is also one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island of Bohol. There are tarsiers, a small primate species on the verge of extinction, in this massive forest. Small, nocturnal primates with large, rounded eyes, these animals have been around for 45 million years. They are easily stressed due to their frail nature and high levels of emotional sensitivity. In times of extreme stress, tarsiers have been known to kill themselves by slamming their skulls against tree trunks, thus tourists are asked to keep noise levels down. Photos by guests are welcome, however, flash photography is prohibited. Also, tarsiers are off-limits for human interaction.

3. Bilar Man-Made Forest

Bilar Man-Made Forest. Popular Tourist Attractions in Bohol Philippines

Bohol’s Bilar Man-Made Forest is one of the most magical Bohol tourist spot. It was Governor Conrado Marapao in 1953 that initiated the reforestation program that had been planned since 1947. Deforestation in the Loboc watershed was the reason for this.

The Bilar Man-Made Forest is a popular stop on tours of Bohol, and with good reason. The forest’s well-spaced tree canopies create a natural tunnel, perfect for a leisurely stroll. It’s peaceful, so it’s perfect for a little break before continuing on to the forest to the north, where you may continue your exploration of Bohol.

Built from white and red mahogany trees, it stretches for a total of two kilometers. Tours to the Chocolate Hills and other Bohol attractions are often combined with visits to this site.

This sightseeing trip also includes a Loboc River Cruise, so you can enjoy the sites without having to go far from the dock.

4. Pahangog Falls

Pahangog Twin Falls Dimiao Bohol Philippines – Photos from Adventure Bohol. Popular Tourist Attractions in Bohol Philippines

Located in southern Bohol’s Dimiao Region is the breathtaking Pahangog Falls. It will take around an hour and twenty minutes if you stay in Panglao, which is where most tourists do.

Panglao is where the vast majority of visitors choose to spend their time. Because it is the island’s most popular tourist destination, complete with a wide variety of hotels, resorts, and hostels, as well as both Western and native cuisine.

Pahangog Falls is a stunning waterfall in Bohol, Philippines, and also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bohol, thanks in part to the striking contrast between the green of the surrounding tropical trees and the blue of the pool below. Considering it’s a twin cascade surrounded by natural beauty, it’s certain to pique anyone’s interest.

5. Loboc River

7. Pangas Falls

Pangas-Falls-Carmen-Bohol. Popular Tourist Attractions in Bohol Philippines

Some people like to develop a tan by spending time at the beach or in the pool. People may mistake it for a glass of milky tea or a steaming mug of piping hot joe. But for the residents of Carmen, Bohol, a dip in the refreshingly cool waters of Pangas Falls is a relief.

In the province of Bohol, one of the few remaining natural wonders is Pangas Falls. Located in the chill town of Carmen, Bohol, the Guadalupe barangay is a great place to unwind. This area is still relatively undiscovered since it doesn’t have many visitors and hasn’t been highlighted on many websites.

The lush greenery and towering trees at Pangas Falls provide a wonderful backdrop for your vacation photographs and add to the relaxing atmosphere of the region.

Being undeveloped means there are no benches, booths, or entry fees to speak of, just the untamed beauty of nature. Bring ample food and drink if you want to spend time here. And, of course, keep waste in mind. Keep tidy as you go along, as usual.

Stairway Down to the Hinagdanan Cave - Cush Travel Blog. Popular Tourist Attractions in Bohol Philippines

The Hinagdanan Cave on the island of Bohol is widely considered to be among the world’s most stunning natural wonders and also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bohol. It provides a pool of clean water in which one may swim while admiring the stalactites and stalagmites that decorate the ceiling of the cavern.

However, almost everyone would agree that the rice terraces in Candijay are the ones that all visitors should see. The people who live there say that it is the tallest waterfall not just in that part of Bohol, but in all of Bohol.

The main cascade of the falls is 60 feet tall. It has three layers, each with structures made of boulders that give a different view of how the water flows down. The waterfall basin is very shallow, so you don’t have to worry if you don’t know how to swim. (But it is very rocky, so you should wear shoes that can handle that.) You would see the next cascade, which is smaller than the first one, a little farther down the falls. And its water falls into a small green pool that is clean. Most visitors come here to take it easy and enjoy the view. The water from the falls is clean, fresh, and cool, making it a great place to cool off from the intense heat.

Around Bohol

Bohol’s Best Mountains, Trails and National Parks for Hiking Enthusiasts and Nature-Lovers

sierra bullones bohol tourist spot

Around Bohol

Traversing through mountains and hills is a strenuous and sometimes dangerous endeavor. And while trekking up a mountain poses its set of risks, the reward at the end is always worth it.

Most people may not know it, but Bohol is actually a hidden gem when it comes to easily-hiked and traversed hills and mountains. While Bohol is mostly known for its beautiful beaches , it is also home to a good number of trails and peaks that are sure to satisfy the wanderlust of hikers and nature-lovers alike.

So without further adieu, if you fancy spending a few hours of your visit to Bohol for the magnificent views, then this list is a definite addition to your bucket list.

Alicia Panoramic Park/Binabaje Hills

sierra bullones bohol tourist spot

Photo by Jackson Groves via Journey Era

Located in the town of Alicia, Binabaje Hills also known as Alicia Panoramic Park , offers a beautiful sight to behold. Located an hour from the town of Anda, hikers must get a guide from the Municipal Hall, who will drive them to the foothills of Binabaje. It is not advisable that you drive to the foothills on your own as the trail can be muddy, winding, and quite tricky. From there, the hike to the peak will only take about an hour.

The views from Binabaje are best seen at sunrise which means you will have to leave the town of Alicia at dawn, at about 3 or 4 am. The hill is very steep so the drive can be a little dangerous as you will be traveling in the dark, which is why a guide is necessary if you want to get to the peak in one piece.

Bohol Tarsier Trail

As the name has it, this trail will allow you to explore the natural habitat of the Philippine tarsier, the smallest primate in the world. It is a much-traversed trail in the town of Corella, with a pathway that’s filled with forested terrain, wildlife, and of course, the sanctuary of the tarsiers.

A 15-km trail, it has been set up by the Philippine Tarsier Foundation Inc., to enable interested parties to observe these primates in their natural habitat, as well as for educational purposes. The rich flora and fauna that surrounds this trail is filled with many species of trees and animals. Trees and plants along the trail have signages denoting their scientific names and other pertinent information.

The trail ends in Loboc, where hikers can have the option of swimming in Busay Falls or Loboc River.

Can-umantad Trail

sierra bullones bohol tourist spot

The trail is basically the trek going to the popular Can-umantad Falls . Located in the town of Candijay, which is on the eastern part of the island, the trail boasts of rolling grasslands, steep hills, and of course, the beautiful sight of the Can-umantad Falls in the end of the journey.

Candijay town is about 92.2km from Bohol’s capital city of Tagbilaran, so if you’re planning on doing this trek, you can either rent your own private vehicle or ride a bus going to town, then head to Canawa Spring in Barangay Can-umantad, which is the ideal starting point of the trek. The 10-km trail is strenuous and challenging so having a guide is definitely recommended.

Cambia Route

An extension of the Can-umantad Trail, the Cambia Route is 15 km long and a more challenging trek than the previous. It leads to the village of Biabas in Guindulman, which is home to the Eskaya tribe. Hiring a guide is highly advisable.

The trail also starts at the Canawa Spring, and the first 15 minutes of the trek covers rolling grasslands, then proceeds to a 45-degree angle climb all the way to the top, where views are particularly beautiful.

The entirety of this trek can last up to 7 hours so it takes quite a while. Beginner hikers may take this trek as a bit challenging, and definitely not for the weak-hearted.

Mayana Peak, Mount Matunog

sierra bullones bohol tourist spot

Considered to be Bohol’s highest peak, Mayana Peak is located in the barangay of Mayana, in the town of Jagna. Mayana is also known as the “Little Baguio of Bohol,” due to its pertinent cooler weather. It also sits at 820km above sea level, making it a haven for beautiful flora and fauna.

You can take a bus from Tagbilaran to the town of Jagna, and from the Jagna public market, ride a jeep to the barangay of Mayana, or hire a habal-habal (motorcycle with driver) to take you to the area.

The trail is a bit tricky with no signs and marked trails, so be sure to have a guide with you. The ascent is also 45 minutes long, with slippery grounds and having only the branches and trunks of trees to hold on to.

Along the way, you will be treated to rice terraces, a centennial Narra tree, and plenty of beautiful scenery. Once you reach the top, the mountain ranges of 3 towns can be seen, offering a majestic view of Garcia, Duero, and the town of Candijay.

Rajah Sikatuna National Park

sierra bullones bohol tourist spot

A birdwatcher’s paradise, the Rajah Sikatuna National Park is the widest remaining forest in Bohol. It was declared a National Park in 1987 and covers several towns in Bohol, which are Bilar, Valencia, Carmen, Batuan, Dimiao, Garcia Hernandez, and Sierra Bullones.

You can start the trail at Logarita in the town of Bilar, which is about 42km northeast of Tagbilaran City.

If you intend to do birdwatching, it is highly recommended that you bring a birdcall tape as the sound of the tapered bird will lure even the shyest of birds. Among other wildlife you can witness at the park include monkeys, tarsiers, bats, and it even has a butterfly sanctuary: talk about a trek for nature-lovers.

Bohol Sea of Clouds (Mt. Puntaas)

sierra bullones bohol tourist spot

Hilltops jutting out of thick cloud cover as seen from Mt. Puntaas. Photo: eazytraveler.net

Known as the Bohol Sea of Clouds, Mt. Puntaas is a sight to behold. A curtain of clouds envelopes the valleys beneath, creating a surreal and ethereal view that can only be viewed early in the morning.

There are two towns in Bohol that serves as the starting point of the hike to the peak. You can go to the town of Danao, which is a 2 to 3-hour bus ride from Tagbilaran City, or you can also head to the town of Dagohoy. Whichever starting point you choose, you can head to the peak by hiring a habal-habal to take you to the starting point trail to Laguna Hills, where you will be asked to pay an entrance fee. From the foothills, Laguna Hills will only take about 10 minutes and after that, the Sea of Clouds is reachable within minutes.

The best time to witness the clouds is between the hours of 4:30 am to 6 am. Note that even if clouds can be seen all year-round, the weather still plays a big factor in their formation so advanced planning and some luck is still involved.

Bohol’s beauty doesn’t start and end with its pristine blue waters, or the majestic Chocolate Hills. With plenty of beauty even from the top, Bohol’s natural wonders are full of awe-inspiring sites and moments.

Good day Sir. Willy!

I am Roda C. Nuera an Environmental Science student from BISU. I am currently doing investigation and I needed the average number of tourist (local & foreign) in the Loboc River hence I made this comment in a hope that you have this data I needed for my paper work. Thank you.

Hi Ms. Roda, we don’t have disaggregated data for the municipalities. You might want to refer your query to the municipal tourism officer of the concerned municipality. Thank you.

Treasures of Candijay (Bohol): Cadapdapan Rice Terraces and Can-Umantad Falls

Candijay

Go beyond the usual Bohol itinerary and be mesmerized with other surprises that are hidden in the suburbs of Tagbilaran City. Because there’s more in Bohol than the Chocolate Hills, centuries old churches, man-made forest or the iconic Tarsiers.

Candijay

Two hours away from Tagbilaran, approximately 92 kilometer east, is the laid back town of Candijay , an emerging tourism hot spot for its manifold of attractions – caves, springs and mangrove forest. But what makes the town popular these days are the rice terraces and waterfalls particularly in Barangay Cadapdapan.

Cadapdapan Rice Terraces

Rice terraces are not unusual in the province of Bohol. In the hinterlands of the island are these carved hills and mountains, perhaps not as grandiose as those in Cordilleras, but uniquely beautiful just the same. There are rice terraces in the towns of Lila, Dimiao, Sierra Bullones and Jagna, but many locals say that the most beautiful in the province are located in the town of Candijay.

Cadapdapan Rice Terraces

Being among the top rice-producing towns of Bohol, it is not surprising that Candijay harbors the most captivating of all the rice terraces of the province. These terraces are found in the highlands of the villages of Panadtaran, Canawa, Cambane, Abihilan, Lungsoda-an, Tambongan, Luan, Anoling and Cadapdapan. The last is considered as one of, if not, the most captivating of all.

No one really knows the exact story of how these rice terraces were formed but locals say that these are made by their ancestors, hundreds or even thousands of years ago. If there is one thing certain, it is the fact that these rice terraces is comparably beautiful to the rice terraces of Banaue specially when the rice paddies are in vivid green.

Cadapdapan Rice Terraces

Cadapdapan Rice Terraces covers few hectares of the mountain slopes of Barangay Cadapdapan and being irrigated by the waters from Cadapdapan River, the same river system that flows down to Can-Umantad Falls.

Can-Umantad Falls

Just below Cadapdapan Rice Terraces, at least 15 minutes trek down, is Can-Umantad Falls , the most iconic attraction of Candijay.

Can-Umantad Falls is regarded as the tallest waterfalls in the entire province of Bohol. The cascade lies along Cadapdapan River that supplies irrigation to the rice terraces nested above it before flowing downstream.

Can-Umantad Falls

The main cascade towers at the height of 60 feet and layered into three. The water flow freely to a very shallow and rocky basin. Few meters downstream is a lower cascade which is quite smaller at 10 feet high yet dropping to a deep green circular pool, a favorite spot for those who love to take a quick dip.

Can-Umantad Falls

Can-Umantad Falls and the nearby spring pools are owned and managed by Eleuterio’s Can-Umantad Falls and Rice Terraces Resort Inc. It is open to public everyday from 7AM to 5PM. Entrance fee is P20 per person, parking fee is P10 for motorbike and P20 for private cars.

Can-Umantad Falls

Other Attractions of Candijay

Aside from Cadapdapan Rice Terraces and Can-Umantad Falls, Candijay has several other attractions that will surely delight its guests including Canawa Cold Spring, Candijay Mangrove Forest, Kawasihan Islet Sandbar, Danicop Jorge Brook, Kantaligsok Peak and the man-made lake called Boongon Swip, among others.

How to Get to Candijay, Bohol

From Tagbilaran City

Going to Candijay from Tagbilaran City, catch a van (P130 one-way) at city center or bus (P60 one-way) at Dao Terminal in Tagbilaran City to Ubay and get off at the public market of Lungsoda-an in Candijay. From there, take a twenty-minute motorbike or  habal-habal ride going to Cadapdapan (P160 per person, round trip and waiting). The trek to the waterfalls takes at least 15 minutes on a quite steep stone stairs.

Chocolate Hills: Grassfire Hits Bohol’s Famous Tourist Spot

Grassfire affected 2 hills of chocolate hills.

CHOCOLATE HILLS – The extreme heat started a grass fire that razed 2 of the famous Chocolate Hills in Carmen, Bohol.

The intense heat was blamed for the grassfire that struck two mounds of the renowned Chocolate Hills in Carmen, Bohol, on Tuesday night. FO3 Ian Blair Reyes, leading a team from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Carmen, stated that the fire broke out after 7 p.m. and rapidly spread due to the dry grass covering the hills, a result of the hot weather.

Based on a report from Inquirer, the blaze impacted at least two hills overlooking the Chocolate Hills Complex in Barangay Buenos Aires. With darkness hindering the entry of a BFP-Carmen firetruck into the area, responders opted to wait for the fire to diminish while keeping watch over other hills to prevent further damage.

Chocolate-Hills

It was nearly three hours until the fire was officially extinguished. According to BFP records, this incident marks a recurrence of grassfires affecting the iconic Chocolate Hills, a highlight of Bohol’s tourism.

These clusters of cone-shaped mounds are spread across Sagbayan, Carmen, and Sierra Bullones municipalities.

During the wet season, the over 1,700 hills are lush green, but in the summer heat, the grass coating them turns brown, resembling chocolate drops and giving rise to their name, Chocolate Hills.

Watch the video below:

In a previous article, Senator Cynthia Villar said the Captain’s Peak Resort at hills in Bohol should be demolished. The politician expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of constructing a resort in the area, suggesting that agricultural development could have been a more viable option.

Stressing the significance of preserving environmental balance, she called for the barangay and environmental officials responsible for approving the resort’s construction to compensate its owner.
