More about Tattoo You… In the wake of the release of Emotional Rescue in 1980, the future of the Rolling Stones seemed in the balance. Sure, they’d survived the wild 1960s and even wilder ’70s, but as the new decade dawned, they were in uncharted territory. No rock and roll band had lasted nearly 20 years. Still, plans were afoot. With preparations proceeding for a massive tour of the United States at the end of 1981 and another the following year in Europe, a new album was urgently required. But the band’s future was anything but certain. Reflecting on the relationships between the various Stones during the Tattoo You period, Mick says, ‘The difficulty in growing up in a rock and roll band, I think, is that you start with this gang of people and, as anyone knows that’s been in a gang, that gang simply can’t last forever.’ The Stones, however, were determined to carry on. With everyone on a much-needed break after the completion of Emotional Rescue, but with an album owed to the powers that be, the band hit on a novel approach to make it. Chris Kimsey – a veteran of Stones sessions – relates how he knew that some of the band’s outtakes from the 1970s had the potential to be powerful masters. He was tasked with uncovering the best of whatever might be buried in the band’s rich archive. ‘For Tattoo You,’ recalls Ron Wood, ‘we realised that there was a lot of great music that we had recorded in the past that had never been released, particularly from all the material we had amassed during the Some Girls and Emotional Rescue sessions’. ‘The music had to age like good wine,’ Keith adds with a chuckle. Diligently, Kimsey set about his work. For three months he toiled, listening to every reel of tape he could lay his hands on that had rolled during a Stones session in the 1970s. Every step of the way, the band were involved. Not surprisingly, it was the Paris session material for Emotional Rescue and, especially, Some Girls – when Keith Richards was living under the threat of spending time in jail after his February 1977 drug bust in Toronto, Canada – that turned out to be a boon for the team. Describing his drive and focus at that time, Keith says, ‘When I returned to the fold after “closing down the laboratory”, I came back into the studio with Mick and the band to say, “Thanks, man, for shouldering the burden.”’ Eventually, Kimsey had found enough great songs for an album. He sent another set of cassettes of rough mixes to Mick and Keith and waited for their responses. They loved what they heard and were convinced an extraordinarily strong and, considering its disparate sources, remarkably cohesive album was within their grasp. In the autumn of 1980, Mick met up with Kimsey in a suburb of Paris. In a damp, cavernous warehouse, with the Rolling Stones Mobile truck parked inside, they began working in earnest on what would eventually become Tattoo You. After several months of recording, Mick then convened with Keith in New York to add the finishing touches to the album. Finally, to put the project to bed, the masterful mix by Bob Clearmountain and Gary Lyons made tracks taken from so many unrelated sources sound unified.

The Rolling Stones Perform First “Emotional Rescue” in 10 Years

The Rolling Stones Perform First “Emotional Rescue” in 10 Years

The Rolling Stones continued their Hackney Diamonds tour last night, Thursday, May 30, taking the run to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. A follow-up to the band’s MetLife performances, the referred rockers dusted off fan-voted “Emotional Rescue,” last performed on May 26, 2014. This made for a 10-year performance gap for the title track off the band’s 15th studio LP, initially released in 1980.

Prior to the bust out, The Rolling Stones started the show in expected fashion, with “Start Me Up” followed by “Get Off of My Cloud.” The ensemble pulled in “Bitch” off their Sticky Fingers collection before fueling the emotive theme on “Angry.” Landing in the next slot was “Emotional Rescue,” the fan-voted song elicited excitement from the audience, especially from those familiar with the rarity of this particular run-through. They traded their bust out for “Tumbling Dice” and proceeded with the latest “Wild Horses” performance.

Tapping into the tour’s namesake album, The Stones played “Mess It Up,” followed by fan favorite “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” Keith Richards took the lead on ensuing tunes “Tell Me Straight” and “Little T&A,” giving Jagger a moment to catch his breath before retaking center on “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Honky Tonk Women” and a fun “Midnight Ramble” played with a “Hellhound on My Train” interlude.

A trio of fan favorites, such as “Gimme Shelter,” “Paint It Black,” and “Jumpin Jack Flash,” served as the final tune of the 17-song main frame. For the encore, the band returned, cutting into Hackney Diamonds’ favorite “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” before the classic “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” After last night’s performance, the band will play in Orlando, Fla., next Monday, June 3.

Tickets remain on sale. View the band’s setlist on setlist.FM . Watch a fan-shot video of “Emotional Rescue” below.

3 Songs for People Who Say They Don’t Like The Rolling Stones

by Jacob Uitti May 31, 2024, 7:27 am

Formed in 1962 in London, the blues-rock band The Rolling Stones have been preening, performing, and playing music ever since. The group, which is fronted by Mick Jagger and bolstered by his songwriting partner and master guitar player Keith Richards, continues to tour and release music—their most recent album being the 2023 offering Hackney Diamonds .

Videos by American Songwriter

But despite their longevity and knack for connecting with giant crowds, the British-born band has critics and detractors. Some may not like Jagger’s rooster-like stage presence. Some may think they’ve been around too long. But whatever the criticism, we wanted to create this list of songs to retort. Here below are a trio of Stones tracks that are too good to deny.

[RELATED: 3 Eternal Classic Rock Songs by The Rolling Stones]

“Start Me Up” from Tattoo You (1981)

When it comes to The Rolling Stones, truer words were never spoken. Indeed, once they got started, they simply never stopped. Released on the band’s 1981 LP Tattoo You , this track also features a well-known music video in which a purple-shirted Jagger dances and moves as only he (and a peacock) can. Musically, the track is fun and buzzy and it’s a mainstay these days on classic rock radio. On the track, Jagger sings,

If you start me up If you start me up, I’ll never stop If you start me up If you start me up, I’ll never stop

I’ve been running hot You got me ticking, now don’t blow my top If you start me up If you start me up, I’ll never stop Never stop, never stop, never stop

“Paint It, Black” from Aftermath (1966)

Originally released as a single, this track was later added to the U.S. release of the group’s 1966 LP Aftermath . As far as its composition, the song began from a sitar improvisation from former band member (and founder) Brian Jones. Musically, it is one of the more unique and interesting songs from The Rolling Stones. It has depth and surprise and a darkness to it that has made it a fan favorite over the decades. With lyrics about loss, the song has also been used in myriad movies and television shows. On it, Jagger sings,

I see a red door And I want it painted black No colors anymore I want them to turn black

I see the girls walk by Dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head Until my darkness goes

“Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” from Sticky Fingers (1971)

Featuring one of the most well known guitar openings in classic rock history, this song comes from the band’s iconic 1971 LP Sticky Fingers . This song, which features excellent growling vocals from Jagger, originally was supposed to be a sub-three-minute track but, not knowing the tape machines were still on, the band improvised a jam that lasted another four-plus minutes that the group decided to keep. To quote painter Bob Ross, it’s one of those “happy accidents.” In the end, the jam may even be better than the song! Either way, on the offering, Jagger sings,

Yeah, you got satin shoes Yeah, you got plastic boots Y’all got cocaine eyes Yeah, you got speed freak jive, now Can’t you hear me knockin’ On your window? Can’t you hear me knockin’ On your door? Can’t you hear me knockin’ Down your dirty street? Yeah

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

rolling stones tattoo you tour shirt

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

rolling stones tattoo you tour shirt

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

rolling stones tattoo you tour shirt

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

rolling stones tattoo you tour shirt

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

rolling stones tattoo you tour shirt

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA
