On their new album  SPIRITS ,  NOTHING MORE  combine unapologetically massive anthems, catchy hooks, and progressive music with introspective, philosophical lyrics and thought-provoking emotionalism. The album documents the tumultuous time the world experienced over the past two years, capturing the desperation and isolation of lockdown, the spiral of substance abuse, the pain of broken relationships, and survival in self-reliance. These concepts were further explored with the development of their very own meta-personality test,  SPIRITS TEST , designed by frontman  Jonny Hawkins —similar to tests such as   Myers-Briggs, Big 5 and the Zodiac—which results in finding out one’s “ Spirit Type,”  one of seven personality characters based on the test’s results. The “ Spirit Types ” and their origin story are further detailed in the band’s first-ever graphic novel “ SPIRITS VOL.1 ” out now via  Z2 Comics .

NOTHING MORE  recently shared a new version of  SPIRITS  heartfelt single “ Best Times ” featuring  Lacey Sturm (Flyleaf) . Watch the music video  HERE

To coincide with the tour announcement,  NOTHING MORE  will drop a limited-edition reverse artwork translucent smoke variant vinyl version of  SPIRITS  along with a new “ Fuse ” SPIRIT TYPE t-shirt. These will be offered individually or bundled together with the “ SPIRITS VOL.1 ” graphic novel, in addition to a limited number of hand-signed bundles being offered. NOTHING MORE Announces 'Spirits 2023' North American Tour With CROWN THE EMPIRE And THOUSAND BELOW

Lauded as one of mainstream rock's most powerful and distinctive acts, three-times- Grammy -nominated active rock group NOTHING MORE kicks off the new year by announcing the "Spirits 2023" North American headlining tour.

The "Spirits 2023" tour will be presented by the mental health non-profit organization To Write Love On Her Arms ( TWLOHA ). It will launch March 31 in Richmond, Virginia with special guests CROWN THE EMPIRE and THOUSAND BELOW before NOTHING MORE split off for two solo headlining shows (May 6 in Phoenix, Arizona and May 26 in Bloomington, Illinois),followed by a stop at Sonic Temple Festival in Columbus, Ohio on May 28.

A special BLABBERMOUTH.NET presale will begin on Wednesday, January 11 at 10:00 a.m. EST and end on Thursday, January 12 at 10:00 p.m. local time. When prompted, type in the presale code "BESTTIMES" to access tickets before the general public. General on-sale will be Friday, January 13 at 10 a.m. local time.

"For the last 17 years, To Write Love On Her Arms has been finding ways to use live music as a means to connect people to local and affordable options for mental health care," relays TWLOHA 's director of outreach Chad Moses . "In that time, we've been fortunate enough to see some of the very best examples where conversations of mental health have been expressed and received from the stage and in the crowds. We've not done this work alone — rather these conversations have been cultivated through active relationships with countless fans, music industry professionals, and artists. Within those ranks, NOTHING MORE has proven to be among the most consistent and loyal friends to the organization, and that friendship grew in large part due to how they craft their art. When the band performs a song about mental health — or about hope, or about pain — they aren't treating the stage as a pulpit but instead as an invitation. What they have to say or sing finds its true value in how it is received by the listeners and how those fans choose to live out the next chapters. Simply put, NOTHING MORE is what it looks and sounds like to feel a little less alone, and is proof that our deepest questions and challenges can be fertile ground for building community."

NOTHING MORE 's 2022 album "Spirits" via Better Noise Music was inspired by the philosophy of Alan Watts and Carl Jung and an introspective look at the results on one's psyche after being isolated due to the pandemic. The album was accompanied by a meta-personality "Spirits Test" designed by frontman Jonny Hawkins — similar to tests such as Myers-Briggs, Big 5 and the Zodiac — which results in finding out one's "Spirit Type", one of seven personality characters based on the test's results. Each "Spirit Type" is paired to a track on "Spirits" which the band have further highlighted with lyric video visualizers showcasing the artwork for the associated "Spirit Type." Last week NOTHING MORE unveiled the visualizer for "Dream With Me" and they will next reveal the visualizer for "Valhalla" with a YouTube video premiere and Instagram live question-and-answer session this Thursday, January 12.

NOTHING MORE will further develop the story of these "Spirit Types" in their upcoming graphic novel "Spirits Vol. 1" due this spring via Z2 Comics .

Nothing More was AWESOME! They really love what they do and it comes across in their energetic performance. In addition to having a phenomenal voice, Johnny is such a great percussionist and I love the fact he encorporates so much into the show! Love the set, the entrance on the “jungle gym” and Johnny’s performance on the mechanical “scorpion”!

It is rare that you find a lineup that has this much talent from every single one of the acts. Palasades came on first and gave it their all and showed that they are very deserving to be a go to opener for any bigger band. I see Palasades making it big in the future. Badflower came next, and it is easy to say that these guys are going places; big big places. Their energy and performance was phenomenal. Of Mice and Men threw the house down with their heavy hitting, high energy and stellar performance. Not one person was sitting still during their entire set. Nothing More is solidifying their place in the rock and roll world as being one of the best acts there is. There is truly Nothing More that needs to be said other than that.

I heard this would be the best show Id ever seen and IT WAS! Nothing More played the show like it was their last, giving ALL they had and then some! They performed all of their crowd pleasing songs and encouraged us to sing along. Every minute, each member was THERE, with us, rather than above or separate! IT'S A PHENOMENON UNLIKE ANY IVE EXPERIENCED IN THE MIRIAD OF SHOWS IVE SEEN IN MY LIFE AND I CAN'T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN! Nothing More is: Mark Vollelunga on guitar, Daniel Oliver on bass, Ben Anderson is drums and Jonny Hawkins is vocals. Don't wait! If Nothing More is performing anywhere near you, GO! You won't be disappointed.

NOTHING MORE Announce 'SPIRITS 2023' Fall Headlining U.S. Tour Dates

Tickets go on sale this Friday, June 16 at 10:00 A.M. local time.

pixeltracker

After pulverizing stages across North America on the first leg of their headlining “SPIRITS 2023” tour earlier this spring, including sold-out shows in NYC, Philadelphia, Sacramento and Toronto, 3x Grammy-nominated rockers NOTHING MORE will continue to bring their potent live experience to audiences throughout 2023.

LATEST NEWS

Following their return from headlining shows and festival appearances across Europe, NOTHING MORE will join fellow Top 10 rock acts Godsmack and Staind on their North American co-headlining trek from July 23 to August 31.

Next, they’ll launch the second U.S. leg of their “SPIRITS 2023” headlining tour this fall with support from DEAD POET SOCIETY, HYRO THE HERO (rap-rocker and Better Noise Music labelmate), and POST PROFIT. Starting July 23 in Albany, NY at Empire Live, the produced by Live Nation tour will stretch across the South before making its final stop at The Fillmore Charlotte in Charlotte, NC on September 25.

Tickets go on sale this Friday, June 16 at 10:00 A.M. local time here . See below for a list of all upcoming shows.

On their new album SPIRITS, NOTHING MORE combine unapologetically massive anthems, catchy hooks, and progressive music with introspective, philosophical lyrics and thought-provoking emotionalism.

The album documents the tumultuous time the world experienced over the past two years, capturing the desperation and isolation of lockdown, the spiral of substance abuse, the pain of broken relationships, and survival in self-reliance.

These concepts were further explored with the development of their very own meta-personality test, SPIRITS TEST, designed by frontman Jonny Hawkins—similar to tests such as Myers-Briggs, Big 5 and the Zodiac—which results in finding out one’s “Spirit Type,” one of seven personality characters based on the test’s results.

The “Spirit Types” and their origin story are further detailed in the band’s first-ever graphic novel “SPIRITS VOL.1” out now via Z2 Comics.

NOTHING MORE recently shared a new version of SPIRITS' heartfelt single “Best Times” featuring Lacey Sturm (Flyleaf).

To coincide with the tour announcement, NOTHING MORE will drop a limited-edition reverse artwork translucent smoke variant vinyl version of SPIRITS along with a new “Fuse” SPIRIT TYPE t-shirt. These will be offered individually or bundled together with the “SPIRITS VOL.1” graphic novel, in addition to a limited number of hand-signed bundles being offered. See all the new merch options available at  https://store.nothingmore.net/ .

Nothing More + Asking Alexandria Announce 2022 Co-Headline Tour

The spring tour season just got another rock infusion with Nothing More and Asking Alexandria pairing up for what should be one of the top rock tours of May and June. And it doesn't stop there, as they've added Atreyu and rising upstarts Eva Under Fire to fill out the bill.

The tour gets underway May 13 in Kansas City, Mo. and will carry over to the June 19 finale in Houston, Texas. You can see all the dates, cities and venues listed toward the bottom of this post.

For Nothing More, this offers a chance to return to the stage after their critically-hailed and Grammy-nominated 2017 Stories We Tell Ourselves. The band has been working on new music and their next studio album is expected later this year via Better Noise Music.

Asking Alexandria, meanwhile, have a more recent album to support with last year's See What's On the Inside platter as well as the Never Gonna Learn EP follow-up. The title track of the EP has already climbed into the Top 15 at radio.

Asking Alexandria's Ben Bruce says, "This spring and summer we are finally getting back to doing what we love. We are finally hitting the road again and we will be bringing our biggest stage show yet with us. Asking Alexandria and our friends in Nothing More will be teaming up and co-headlining across North America alongside Atreyu and Eva Under Fire. We have missed playing for you all so much and we can’t wait to get back out there and see you all. We will be playing songs from the very beginning of our career all the way through to our latest album See What’s On the Inside. See you all soon.”

Nothing More issued a statement as well, offering, “We have been in a dark cocoon of our inner most thoughts and feelings for 2 damned years … shifting, shaping and transforming into a creature filled with terrible power and an unregulated lust for energy. This is going to be our greatest album yet… and this tour with Asking Alexandria is just the beginning. Be ready America.”

Jack Nicklaus wants nothing to do with PGA Tour, LIV Golf negotiations

Jack Nicklaus, the most decorated major champion of all-time, does not want to get involved with golf’s ongoing divide.

Jack Nicklaus, PGA Tour, the Memorial Tournament

Jack Nicklaus has been a voice of reason for professional golf for decades. He has provided his opinion and perspective on numerous topics, from course design to equipment advances to rolling back the golf ball.

But he wants nothing to do with the current saga surrounding the PGA Tour and LIV Golf’s beneficiary, the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) .

“I live in Florida now. I’m not part of the problems of professional golf,” Nicklaus said Tuesday with a laugh.

“I’ve tried to stay out of what’s going with the Tour and LIV.”

When the Memorial Tournament begins on Thursday, play will start on the first anniversary of the framework agreement set forth by the PGA Tour and the PIF.

On Jun. 6, 2023, these two sides agreed to drop their lawsuits and work towards uniting the professional game once again. They also established a deadline of Dec. 31, 2023, to strike a deal, but that date has come and gone with little progress.

“I think they’re working on it. But I think [the PGA Tour is] in pretty good hands,” Nicklaus said.

Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson

“A couple of months ago, I called [PGA Tour Commissioner] Jay [Monahan] to talk about it. I said, ‘Jay, I’m worried a little bit about what’s going on.’ I said, ‘Are you doing all right, or are you not?’ And he said, ‘We’re doing fine.’ I said, ‘That’s all I need to know. So, as far as I know, the Tour’s doing fine, and their problems are going to get worked out. How it is, I don’t know.”

Nicklaus does not want to get involved any further. All he needed was a wellness check, and considering he helped create the modern PGA Tour in 1968, he still feels invested in it. His Memorial Tournament is one of the most prominent non-majors annually—an event available only to PGA Tour members.

But he also believes his protégé, Tiger Woods , will help guide things to smoother waters. Woods, of course, joined the PGA Tour Policy Board last August.

“Tiger has a lot of experience, he’s been around long enough, he’s not going to play a whole lot more. He can still contribute,” Nicklaus said.

“I think it’s great that he wants to contribute and be part of it. I think it’s great that the guys want him to contribute. So I’m delighted to see him on the board. He’ll make a great contribution.”

Nevertheless, Nicklaus, at 84 years old, also revealed that he does not pay attention to the PGA Tour's day-to-day minutiae.

He has five children, 24 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, all of whom rank way higher on his priority list than the Tour.

He still runs the Memorial Tournament in his native Columbus, Ohio, but he does not do much outside of that as it relates to pro golf. He barely even watched last year’s U.S. Open , too.

“I’m trying to be in the middle of the Memorial Tournament and be involved in that,” Nicklaus said.

“I think that there are a lot smarter people and a lot better people who are better versed on what’s going on than I am as it relates to the problems of the game of golf. I think that it’s in good hands and I trust them to solve those problems because I love the game of golf, I love to see the game of golf flourish and grow as we’ve all seen it grow for a long time.”

Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis (L) dunks, Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving takes a breather.

From 2017-19, Dallas Mavericks star (and perennial, controversial NBA main character) Kyrie Irving was a major force on a competitive Boston Celtics team.

Likewise, Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis added a lot of value to the playoff-bound Dallas Mavericks from 2019-22.

Now, in a simple twist of fate, these two stars — who also happen to be career journeymen — will be meeting in the 2024 NBA Finals .

The series, which tips off at Boston’s TD Garden on Thursday, June 6, pits Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum’s number one-seeded Celtics against Luka Doncic and Irving’s underdog Dallas Mavericks who upset the Clippers, Thunder and Timberwolves to advance to the big dance.

As for Boston, they breezed through the postseason handily defeating the Heat, Cavaliers and Pacers, only losing two games in the process.

Who will come out on top?

Will it be the heavily-favored Celtics looking to score their first Larry O’Brien Trophy since the Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen “Big Three” 2008 squad?

Or is Dallas going to collect rings for the first time since 2011 during the Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Tyson Chandler, Jason Terry era?

All we know is the best way to find out is live — and last-minute tickets are still available.

At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on tickets for home games at Boston’s TD Garden was $600 before fees on Vivid Seats.

For those planning on attending at Dallas’ American Airlines Center, prices start at $747 before fees .

While that may sound expensive, it’s hard to put a price on witnessing hoops history IRL.

Want to see Jaylen, Jayson and Kristaps (who’s coming off the IL) duke it out against Luka and Kyrie?

You’re in the right place, hoops heads.

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about the 2024 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

Dallas Mavericks NBA Finals home game tickets

Hoping to catch the Mavs on their home hardwood?

We have a breakdown of all the best prices on tickets for Games 3, 4 and 6 at American Airlines Center below.

About the Celtics vs. Mavericks

In the 2023-24 regular season, the Celtics and Mavericks met twice; Boston won both games.

Taytum and Brown led the way in their fist matchup on Jan. 22; the pair scored 39 and 34 points respectively on their way to a 119-110 victory. On the Mavericks side, Doncic dropped 33.

Their second game took place March 1. The Celts routed the Mavs 138-110 in that contest thanks to high-scoring efforts from Tatum, Brown and Porzingis. Once again, Luka played exceptionally well and scored 37.

At 70, Cyndi Lauper Has Nothing Left to Prove

She’s plotting a farewell tour. She’s starring in a documentary about her life. And she could only ever be herself.

One Friday afternoon in May, Cyndi Lauper stepped out of her Upper West Side apartment building and into the streets of New York City. She wore glitter-encrusted glasses, sneakers with rainbow soles and a stack of beaded bracelets on each arm. A rice-paper parasol swung in her hand. As she walked, she examined the crowds and remarked when glints of interest caught her eye.

“Of course, up here it’s fashion hell,” she allowed of her tony neighborhood. And yet, every few blocks she rubbernecked at another woman’s look, her famous New Yawk accent lifting and tumbling in pleasure at what she saw:

“Look at these dames, how cute are they?”

“Did you love those pants? I kind of loved those pants.”

“Look at this lady,” she said, stepping off the curb and clocking a passerby. The woman moved nimbly, tomato-red streak in her silver hair, body draped in shades of fuchsia and cherry as she pushed the gleaming metal frame of a walker. “Fabulous,” Lauper exclaimed. “Come on!”

At 70, the pop icon and social justice activist isn’t just charging back into the streets. On Monday, Lauper announced her final tour, the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour, which will have her headlining arenas across North America from late October to early December. And “Let the Canary Sing,” a documentary about her life and career that premiered at the Tribeca Festival last year, is streaming on Paramount+.

Lauper has not staged a major tour — “a proper tour, that’s mine” — in over a decade. But now her window of opportunity is closing, so she’s leaping through it. “I don’t think I can perform the way I want to in a couple of years,” she said. “I want to be strong.”

A blond woman in red lipstick rests her chin on the mirrored top of a table.

And until recently, when she finally agreed to sit for the director Alison Ellwood, she could not envision committing her life story to film. “I wasn’t going to do a documentary because I’m not dead,” she said. More to the point, she did not feel particularly misunderstood. From the moment she danced across the city in the 1983 video for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” she felt that she had articulated precisely what she wanted to say.

“Everything I wanted them to understand was in that video,” she said of her fans. She has a lot of people who get her: The clip has been viewed on YouTube more than one billion times. Forty years later, she holds it up as a thesis, the key to decoding her artistic perspective and understanding everything that followed. After all, “You never have to wonder where a New Yorker stands,” she said. “They’ll tell you, straight up.”

CYNDI LAUPER, BORN in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, bopped around the house to the Beatles’ songs, her older sister, Elen, singing McCartney’s parts and Lauper taking Lennon’s. It was her earliest lesson in harmony and song structure. But when she left home at 17, it was with a copy of Yoko Ono’s feminist conceptual art book “Grapefruit” in her hands.

Ono taught her that “you can create art in your head, and then you can view things differently,” Lauper told me. This attitude served her well as she tried (and often failed) to work as a painter, a shoe saleswoman, a racetrack hot walker, an IHOP waitress, a gal Friday at Simon & Schuster and the singer in a cover band.

Singing other people’s music in Long Island clubs and dive bars, Lauper struggled to find her place. She tried to channel Janis Joplin, but “I was stuck inside her body, and she didn’t like it, and I didn’t like it,” she said. She tried to sound like Gene Pitney, and “it came out sounding like Ethel Merman.” After a while, “You start to feel that you’re just not good enough.”

But really, she was just no good at being anyone other than Cyndi Lauper. When she started writing and arranging songs for herself, “I told the stories that I knew about the women that I knew,” she said. “About my mom, my aunt, my grandmother.” They guided her back to the rhythms of her own life, even if, in the beginning, few were interested in listening. “My first concert was to 14 people,” she said, “and I did the encore, OK?”

The documentary’s title is a line ripped from a real-life courtroom drama: Early on, Lauper’s career got entangled in the ambitions of an ex-manager, who sued her to retain control of her music. She sank into bankruptcy trying to escape him. When the judge sided with Lauper, he banged the gavel and said: “Let the canary sing.”

Once freed, Lauper connected with Robert Hazard, who had written a track called “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” He’d arranged it as a rock song from a man’s perspective — the girls were the ones he imagined sleeping with — and Lauper had some edits. She recast it as a gleeful public announcement, calling out a sexist double standard (“Oh mama dear, we’re not the fortunate ones”) while claiming liberation from the workplace, the home and the patriarchy. And she rearranged the notes, pitching her voice so high that it could not be ignored. “I sang that high because I was trumpeting an idea,” she said.

And then there was the video. “That video was what you call ‘inclusive’ nowadays, and that was the most important thing,” Lauper said. In addition to the Italian American pro wrestler Lou Albano, Lauper featured her mother, her lawyer, her manager, a crop of record-company secretaries, and a racially diverse group of singers and dancers. “I was sick of the segregation” of the music industry, she said. “It’s people together that create a style.”

MTV was still in its infancy in 1983, and it was fortuitous that Lauper’s debut album, “She’s So Unusual,” came out just as the network was ascending. She saw her public image as a visual art form. Her makeup artist was a painter, and her stylist was a vintage buyer.

“People sometimes get the wrong idea that it was very thrown together,” Laura Wills, the founder of the vintage shop Screaming Mimi’s, said of the singer’s style. “People just didn’t look like that.” In the early ’80s, Lauper worked for Wills, often bartering her labor for clothes. When her career took off, Wills started styling her, and the pair often constructed Lauper’s outfits as if sliding chips across a poker table, as in, “I’ll see your polka-dot socks and striped capris, and I’ll raise you a plaid top,” Wills said. “I’ll see your polka-dot socks, striped capris and plaid top, and I’ll raise you a paisley hat.”

Lauper seemed to shoot to fame as a fully formed feminist icon. She refused to tell interviewers her age (“I’m not a car,” she said), and she insisted that they recognize the politics behind her aesthetic choices. “I wore the corset to undo the power of the binding of women,” she told the press. She graced the cover of Ms. Magazine and recorded the 1986 song “True Colors,” which resonated with her in the wake of a friend’s death from AIDS.

“I know that I probably lost business because I talked about AIDS a lot,” she said, but figured “I ought to stand up like any good Italian and stick up for my family, you know?” In 2008, she founded True Colors United to help combat homelessness among L.G.B.T.Q. youth. And in 2022, she created the Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights fund to support abortion access and other reproductive justice movements.

In 1985, Lauper won the best new artist Grammy after the release of “She’s So Unusual.” The album — and songs like “Time After Time” and “All Through the Night” — broke records. But something odd was happening. She looked around and saw versions of herself everywhere. “When I first became famous, I felt like the whole world just kind of went” — here Lauper made a sharp slurping noise — “and sucked everything up. The jewelry, the color, the corsets on the outside, the whole thing. And then used it. Spit it out. Next!”

Lauper was accused of being a manufactured package. “No, it was me. That’s how I dressed. That’s how I looked. That was my community,” she said. “I have a brain.”

When Lauper got a call that a movie studio was adapting her big hit into a movie, she balked at its fluffy premise. “I guess it was about a couple of girls … trying to have fun,” she said. (Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt starred.) Lauper refused permission to use her song, so it featured Hazard’s version with other vocalists instead. “For me, it sucked,” she said. “You took my style. And it had nothing to do with me at all.”

In the ’80s, Lauper was compared so closely to other female musicians that it was implied there was not space for all of them. She was pitted against other women — mainly Madonna, who released her debut album the same year. On chat shows and in schoolyards (and even on the charity single “We Are the World” ), celebrities and fans were asked to choose one. “It was like apples and oranges,” Lauper told me. Or as she put it in Newsweek in 1985: “She’s just doing her thing. My thing happens to be different.” It was a shame, Lauper said: “I would have liked to have a friend.”

Though she fought her battles mainly alone, Lauper has inspired generations of women. Among her acolytes are Nicki Minaj, who in April brought her onstage in Brooklyn to duet on the song that samples her, “Pink Friday Girls.” When an interviewer asked the 26-year-old singer-songwriter Chappell Roan, “How does it feel to be called the Gen-Z Cyndi Lauper?” she replied, “I think Cyndi Lauper is the Gen-Z Cyndi Lauper.”

Lauper made 11 more albums after her debut — among them a blues record, a country record and a dance record. In the early 2000s, she walked over to Broadway, starring in “The Threepenny Opera” and writing the music and lyrics to the musical “Kinky Boots” after Harvey Fierstein, who wrote the book, tapped her for the gig. “There’s a small group of people I consider my children; she’s one of my daughters,” the actor and writer, who turns 72 this week, said. Fierstein told me that he had suspected Lauper’s talents were underused in rock, and he wanted to see what it was like for her to write a song that she would never sing herself.

“My favorite was a recording she made on her phone, in the beauty parlor, with her head in the dryer,” he said. (Lauper was often multitasking.) Her autoharp competed with the salon noise. “It’s really hard to sell a $10 million production on a recording of an autoharp song with a dryer background,” he said. “But that’s what we did.” Lauper won the Tony for best score, the first woman to win alone.

In an industry that requires the rapacious pursuit of the new and the cynical extraction of identity, Lauper was never willing to abandon herself. She had forged the revolutionary style, sang the totemic song. She inspired millions, billions, of fans to be themselves. Why should she have to change who she was?

AS LAUPER AND I traversed the Upper West Side, we ducked into an exhibition about the abstract artist Sonia Delaunay, passed the original Screaming Mimi’s location (now a dry cleaners), and wound back to her apartment, where she invited me up.

Past the doorman, past a cheetah-print doormat and a cheetah-print curtain, two little pugs named Lulu and Ping awaited Lauper’s return. She disappeared to arrange a plate of ginger cookies, the same kind Jackson Browne always sent her on Christmas, while her husband, the actor David Thornton, told me about their meet-cute on the set of the 1991 film “Off and Running.” She played a fake mermaid, he played a murderer. Off the set, he was struck instantly by her winning sense of humor.

“She’s the Rodney Dangerfield of rock ’n’ roll,” he said. As in, she is so funny that she does not always receive the respect she deserves. “I don’t think anybody has any idea how hard she works,” he said.

To prepare for the tour, she blasts the stereo in her apartment and dances and sings, vexing the pugs. She works with a vocal coach four days a week. And she trains like it’s a sport. Her weekly exercise routine includes physical therapy, weights, stretching, physical therapy, weights, yoga, more weights, yoga, aerobics, physical therapy, weights again. She’s been chomping on enormous salads that make her feel like a horse.

“But when you’re a singer, you have to be an athlete,” she said. “You can’t [expletive] around. When you’re 20, yeah. But when you get older? No.”

As the tour approaches, she’s been daydreaming about “all the crazy stuff I tried that didn’t work” in the long arc of her career. The butterfly-winged black dress that she was meant to reveal as she stepped out of a cocoon. The bit where she was supposed to change behind a backlit screen like an old cartoon character. A kind of mechanical skirt that resembled a globe, slowly spinning her around as she sang.

She’s not exactly sure what she’ll pull off this time. Whatever changes, one thing remains the same: “Who the hell I am is who the hell I am.”
