Paddling at Rainbow Springs in a Clear Kayak

| clear kayaking at rainbow springs |.

The scenery is breathtaking, and a serene quietness is setting in as you enjoy nature at its prime.

We embark on our Rainbow River adventure at our launch location of KP Hole. Right as we take our first few paddles we are able to see the natural clear blue waters of Rainbow Springs, as well as the surrounding lush landscape. The upcoming paddle will last anywhere from 2 to 2.5 hours depending on the speed of the group, and if we see any wildlife along the way. It’s not only one of the most picturesque spots to paddle in Florida, but also a great way to stay active outdoors. Let’s take a further look…

rainbow springs kayak tour

When we enter the water we will be paddling up stream first, making the return a nice relaxing float back. This way we also get the “hard-work” out of the way first. Our guides will point out a few fun facts about the surrounding area, and any wildlife we may see. It’s always a fun game to see who can spot the wildlife first. Try to beat our guides! There are over 14 types of birds to be seen out there, including Great Blue Herons, Hawks, and Cormorants, as well as some bass and plenty of turtles. We’ve even seen otters catching a breath as they swim right by us! It’s a total adventure!

Every day on the water is different. In fact, you won’t ever see the same water twice. Rainbow Springs pumps out on average 800 million gallons of fresh water daily into the entire length of the Rainbow River. There are springs located at the headwaters, smaller springs leading out from numerous, hidden caves, rock crevices, and sand boils. This is the main reason why the water remains so crystal clear. But it gets better! The farther up river you go, the bluer the water gets. The spring’s clear water is 72 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, always the perfect temperature!

rainbow springs kayak tour

About 30 minutes into the paddle we will reach a very unique stopping point. This side canal is where you will have a chance to get out, snap some pics, and even take a swim if you’d like. You may think you are paddling in a jungle at this point, but we can assure you this spot is a hidden treasure, and definitely worth checking out.

About Ocala Springs

Ocala, Florida, is renowned for its beautiful natural springs, offering recreational and ecological significance. The springs are a unique phenomenon resulting from  the underground aquifer system, which pumps crystal-clear water to the surface, creating picturesque bodies of water that attract locals and tourists alike.

Ocala springs are characterized by their transparency, vibrant blue hues, and constant temperature, making them ideal for various activities such as swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and enjoying the natural surroundings.

There are many natural springs in Ocala, and many offer a chance to get out on a kayak, but only a few offer a chance to experience the springs in a crystal clear kayak.

Rainbow Springs is one of these locations.

Along the Rainbow River in Ocala

About Rainbow Springs

Located in Dunnellon, Florida, within the Rainbow Springs State Park, Rainbow Springs is one of Ocala’s top natural springs destinations.

With its strikingly clear and vibrant blue waters, Rainbow Springs is a favourite playground for locals and visitors alike.

The  main spring,  also referred to as the first magnitude spring, gushes forth  millions of gallons of pristine water each day.  The springs themselves, along with the surrounding park, offer a multitude of activities and opportunities to connect with nature. The translucent waters create a stunning backdrop for activities such as swimming, snorkeling, and tubing.

Beyond the water, Rainbow Springs State Park features  walking trails  that wind through lush landscapes, showcasing the native flora and fauna of the region. It’s a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and a serene escape for those seeking tranquillity amidst the natural beauty of Florida.

The best part about visiting Rainbow Springs is that you can bring your own kayak, tube, or canoe and experience the springs and the Rainbow River in your own time. But if you don’t have your own water toys – we certainly didn’t – some providers offer rentals for Rainbow River Kayaking.

One of them is a popular outfitter,  Get Up and Go Kayaking.

Rainbow Springs, Ocala

About Get Up and Go Kayaking

Get Up And Go Kayaking  is a  kayaking outfitter  renowned for its unique and immersive clear kayak tours.

The company originated in Florida in 2016 (but now has offices and launch points in Florida, Texas, and Tennessee) from the innovative idea of offering visitors the chance to experience natural springs and waterways from the unique   vantage point of transparent kayaks.

Today, their crystal clear kayak tour is considered one of this region’s most popular water activities. So much so that other Ocala springs and operators have also introduced clear kayaks to their roster of rentals. Imitation is the best form of flattery, right?

We’ll admit, we were hooked on the idea of Rainbow River kayaking with clear kayaks – it looked like the perfect vessel to explore the river (and an Insta-worthy one, too!) We couldn’t resist the chance to experience this tour firsthand.

Clear kayak on Rainbow River

Our Crystal Clear Kayak Tour Experience

Our Rainbow River kayaking adventure began at  KP Hole Park, a private park with a launching point for kayaks, tubes, and other water toys along the Rainbow River.

Upon arrival, we checked in at the KP Hole Park administration office and paid our $7/person park fee (it’s not included in the rate of the tour).

Ou clear kayaks awaited us by the water along with our guide and other tour participants. Only 4 of us were on the tour that day, which made for a nice and intimate experience.

It wasn’t long before we loaded the kayaks with our gear (dry bags, life jackets, water bottles, and cameras) and set off on our tour. We opted to ride together, as the kayaks (actually, they were more similar to a canoe) were fully equipped for tandem operation and designed for two paddlers.

Our tour began at 9am – early, by Rainbow River’s standards, so the river was still relatively quiet and calm. It was a hot summer day, and a beautiful fog hovered over the river.

The tour began upriver and called for a bit of a paddle, perfect for our early enthusiasm and energy. Carefully chosen stops punctuated our route, inviting us to take in the surroundings and slow down for wildlife sightings. We spotted a number of birds, a few crocs, and some turtles lazying on the branches of the fallen trees or swimming in the water right under our kayaks.

About 15 minutes into the paddle, we pulled into a tiny canal where we jumped out of our kayaks for a little stroll. The area was lush, overgrown, and felt like a magical hidden gem tucked away from the masses. The palm trees dipped into the water as we waddled in knee-deep water. At the end of the canal was a beautiful leaning palm, a popular photo op on the tour. The mosquitoes were ruthless in that part of the river, but that didn’t stop us from taking a few pretty snaps.

From there, it was another 30-40 minutes of paddling upstream before we turned around and let the gentle current take us back to KP Hole Park.

Our guide elevated the tour from a mere adventure. He shared stories about the Rainbow River and its inhabitants and helped us spot plenty of wildlife along the way.

Our 3 hours kayaking on Rainbow River flew by, and before we knew it, we were back at the launch site. We had a fantastic time on the tour, but in the spirit of transparency, we wanted to take a moment to highlight all the pros and cons of the experience.

On a clear kayak tour with Get up and Go Kayaking

The Pros and Cons of the Experience

Unveiling Aquatic Life:  The crystal clear kayaks offered a fantastic way to admire the wildlife of Rainbow River up close. It was really cool to spot birds, come really close to crocs and see turtles swimming right underneath our kayaks.

Educational Component:  The tour guide shared valuable insights into the local ecosystem, making the experience both adventurous and informative.

Scenic Stops:  Regular stops along the route allowed us to stretch our legs, take a quick dip, and savour the beauty of nature. Not many other kayakers on the river knew about the secret canal passage, and that really felt like a unique experience.

Mosquitoes and Bugs: The serene waters came with a trade-off—mosquitoes and bugs. While they didn’t bother us too much on the main part of the river, we were simply not prepared for the onslaught of mosquitos in the canal. The lush greenery is definitely their favorite environment, and juicy tourists with little or no bug spray – are their prey.

Wildlife Variability: Our guide tried his best to lead us to active wildlife areas, but our sightings were not fantastic. We did spot a few birds and a number of turtles, but we only saw one croc, which scurried away way too quickly for a photo. Sightings on these tours are, of course, not guaranteed, but it’s we did expect a bit more. Perpahs, it was the time of the year (we were there in the summer) or the heat of the day, or maybe we just got a bit unlucky. After all, nature is unpredictable.

Kayaks: We found the clear kayaks to be a bit, well… not so clear. Due to the hot temperatures outside, the inside of the kayak stayed at around 30°C, while the bottom of the kayak, the part submersed into Rainbow River, was closer to 22°C. (Remember that Rainbow River is fed by Rainbow Spring, which remains at 22°C all year around). This temperature difference caused the kayaks to fog up inside, making it hard to see into the water underneath us.

Pricing Considerations:  The clear kayak tour costs $60/person, compared to just $20-30 for a kayak rental without a tour. Those with budget constraints may find the price to be a bit high. Although we thought the experience was well worth it.

FAQs: Tips & Recommendations for Rainbow River Kayaking

What to Bring:  Essential items include swimwear, a reusable water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray (please use a  non-DEET variety ), sunglasses, a hat, water-friendly footwear, and a towel. If you want to bring a camera, phone, or a GoPro, ask the guide for a dry bag to keep your electronics safe while in the kayak.

Child-Friendly:  The tour accommodates children aged 3 and above, with specific guidelines to ensure their safety. So the activity is well suited for the whole family.

Cancellations and Safety:  The company’s cancellation policy reflects its commitment to safety, with full refunds for cancellations made 48 hours before the tour. The tour does take place rain or shine, but trips may be cancelled or postponed in the event of lightning in the area.

Weight Limits:  To ensure safety and comfort for all participants, kayaks have specific weight limits (250 pounds per person and 425 pounds for two).

KP Hole Ocala

The Bottom Line

Rainbow Springs kayaking tour  with  Get Up and Go Kayaking offers a great immersive experience in the heart of Rainbow River. The scenery along the river is beautiful, and mornings offer an ideal time to get on the kayak to explore.

While a few considerations, like bugs and fluctuating wildlife, may sway your decision to join this clear kayak tour, we highly recommend it. It’s lots of fun and a unique experience that has become one of the highlights of our time in Ocala!

Guide To Kayaking At Rainbow Springs, FL

A Rainbow Springs kayaking trip can be an incredible experience, with clear, azure water allowing you the chance to discover an amazing underwater world without diving beneath the surface,

Float through thousands of years of human history, surround yourself with Florida wildlife, and embark on an aquatic adventure that takes you back to nature at a speed anyone can get on board with.

Table of Contents

Why Kayak At Rainbow Springs

Rainbow Springs is one of the largest natural springs in Florida and has one of the world’s largest spring runs: the Rainbow River. The springs produce over 400 million gallons of water every day.

> Best kayaking places in Florida

The park is located almost halfway between the Crystal River and Silver Springs State Park, in southwest Marion County, Florida. It’s less than two hours from Orlando and Tampa , making it a great spot for a day trip.

The Rainbow River, which is an aquatic preserve, stretches just under six miles from the headsprings to where it flows into the Withlacoochee River.

One of the main draws for kayaking at Rainbow Springs is the crystal clear wate r. This turquoise river lets you view the underwater world as you paddle through the beautiful scenery of the lush Florida landscape, alongside moss-covered cypress trees, following thousands of years of cultural history.

The springs maintain a year-round temperature of 72 degrees, making the waters the perfect place to cool off during the summer heat. There’s a designated swimming area at Rainbow Springs State Park.

Rainbow Springs State Park surrounds the headsprings and follows the eastern shores of the river for almost its entire length.

Wildlife To Look Out For While Kayaking At Rainbow Springs

Being Florida, you’re never too far from wildlife and that’s no different at Rainbow Springs.

Alligators are found at Rainbow Springs, in the Rainbow River, and in the Withlacoochee River, just like almost every body of freshwater in the state. So you should always be on your guard while paddling and particularly when swimming in the springs or hiking the trails.

As well as alligators, you’re likely to see lots of turtles , including loggerhead musk turtles, snapping turtles, and various other turtle species. It’s also a fantastic place to spot river otters and you might see the occasional water snake. The water is clear enough to see various fish swimming along below the boat while you’re kayaking.

It’s also a popular spot for bird watching and forms part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. You could spot bald eagles, swallow-tailed kites, and the protected wood stork, tricolored heron, and little blue heron.

Best Times For Kayaking At Rainbow Springs

You can kayak along the Rainbow River all year round. But the best time to paddle is between fall and spring.

The hot summer months can be very busy, as it’s a popular place for tubing. That doesn’t mean you can’t kayak during the summer. It just means you won’t have the river to yourself.

From fall through spring, Rainbow Springs can often be busy on weekends and during holidays. So if you want to avoid the crowds opt for a weekday kayaking trip.

Other Activities In Rainbow Springs

Rainbow river tubing.

Rainbow River tubing trips are extremely popular during the summer as the Rainbow River is a great place to stay cool in the hot Florida weather.

Rainbow River tubing is not allowed in Rainbow Springs Headsprings. To go tubing, you will need to park at the Rainbow River tubing entrance of Rainbow Springs State Park. The tube rental includes a shuttle that will take you two miles upstream so you can casually float back.

You can also bring your own tubes and pay the fee for the shuttle from the Rainbow River tubing entrance to the tubing launch site. The Rainbow Springs tubing entrance is located off of SW 180th Avenue Road, a few miles south of Rainbow Springs State Park headsprings entrance.

Explore Rainbow Springs State Park On Foot

Rainbow Springs State Park has lots to see on foot as well as on the water. Because of the park’s history as a private attraction park, there are three man-made waterfalls and beautiful ornamental gardens to check out, as well as the gift shop.

One of the highlights of the park happens in the early spring, when the azaleas are in full bloom , transforming the gardens with a wash of color.

Walking along the nature trails provides a good opportunity to spot the various species of birds. Take a seat on one of the benches and listen to the birds and the tranquil sound of the waterfalls.

Snorkeling In The Rainbow River

The waters of the Rainbow River are so clear that they provide the perfect opportunity to delve beneath the surface for a closer look.

If you want to snorkel in Rainbow Springs State Park, this is allowed only in the swimming area at the Headsprings entrance.

However, once you’re out of the state park, you can snorkel anywhere along the river, giving you a chance to see the underwater landscape and the many fish swimming beside you.

Some of the kayak rental companies offer shuttles if you want to snorkel or go scuba diving in the river. The Rainbow River Water Taxi offers shuttles on the river but you need to bring your own equipment.

The Rainbow River headsprings range from 10 to 18 feet deep. The deepest spot on the river is the Devil’s Elbow, which is 20 to 25 feet deep and can be an ideal place for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Remember, you need to have a dive flag for snorkeling on the Rainbow River outside the swim zone.

Learn more about kayak safety flags .

As well as the designated swimming area in Rainbow Springs State Park, you can swim at any point along the Rainbow River at all times of the year. However, remember, alligators can be found anywhere in the river at any time.

There is no lifeguard on duty along the river or at the designated swim zone. All children should be supervised for safety reasons, as the water is at least 10 feet deep.

Noodles and life preservers are allowed.

Rules For Kayaking On The Rainbow River

Before you kayak along the Rainbow River, there are a few rules you need to be aware of.

One of the most important rules is that you cannot bring disposable food and beverage containers to the river. This applies along the entire stretch of the Rainbow River as well as in Rainbow Springs State Park. Make sure you have a reusable water bottle, not a disposable one.

I also recommend you bring sunscreen and bug spray with you. Stay hydrated while you’re on the water and wear sun protection, such as a hat and sunglasses.

  • Disposable food and drink containers are prohibited
  • Coolers are prohibited
  • Alcohol is prohibited
  • You must not fish within 1700 feet of headsprings
  • Paper napkins, paper towels, boxes, paper bags, and plastic utensils are not allowed
  • Children 6 years and under must wear life preservers (while tubing or kayaking). PFDs (Personal Flotation Devices) are required for every person on a kayak or canoe.

Best Places To Kayak In Rainbow Springs

Kp hole county park .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alian E. Miranda (@waterworld_dive)

KP Hole County Park can be a better place to launch to paddle the Rainbow River than the Rainbow Springs State Park.

The KP Hole Park launch is located close to the parking lot so you don’t have to haul your kayak a great distance. However, be sure to get to the launch site early, as this parking lot fills up fast.

You’ll find restrooms, a picnic area, concessions, and a swimming area at this county park.

Launching at KP Hole Park, you can paddle upstream to reach Rainbow River Springs. It’s only a mile and a half upstream from here to the headsprings. You can also paddle four miles downstream to Blue Run.

Kayaks, canoes, tubes, and paddleboards can be rented from the park. You can also arrange a shuttle service for the return trip if you want to paddle downstream. The shuttle service is available for privately owned vessels as well as rentals, so it’s easy to bring your own kayak.

Class of Rapids rating:

Class I – easy, slow-moving flatwater

Where to Launch & How to Get There:

KP Hole Park, 9435 SW 190th Avenue Road, Dunnellon, FL 34432

Rainbow Springs State Park

Rainbow Springs State Park is where you’ll find the clear waters of the headsprings of the Rainbow River.

If you’re bringing your own kayak or canoe, this is not the best place to launch, as you will need to carry your kayak around 1800 feet along a trail from the parking lot to the launch area. For convenience, I recommend renting a kayak here rather than bringing your own.

Rainbow Springs State Park has kayak, SUP, and canoe rentals on-site next to the launch.

From the state park, you can paddle downstream, with the slow-moving current, past the multiple vents from underwater caves that create the springs.

It’s a six-mile trip along the entire length of the Rainbow River but you can paddle as short or as long a distance as you want.

As well as kayaking, Rainbow Springs State Park also has other activities, such as swimming, hiking the trails, and exploring the sights of the historic park, including the man-made waterfalls. You’ll also find a snack bar and a gift shop, as well as picnic areas.

19158 SW 81st Pl Road, Dunnellon, FL 34432. Parking is on the north side of the road and it’s around 1800 feet to carry your kayak to the launch point next to the swimming area.

Blue Run Of Dunnellon Park

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Michael Dutily (@michaeldutily)

Blue Run can be a great place to launch if you want easy access to both the Rainbow River and the Withlacoochee River. It’s located close to the end of the Rainbow River, so it’s an easy paddle (around half a mile) to the dark waters of the Withlacoochee.

You can paddle upstream to reach Rainbow Springs and experience the true beauty of the Rainbow River along its entire stretch.

Because the water flows at a very slow speed, it can be easily paddled upstream, even for beginners, making it a great spot for the whole family. There are occasionally motorized vessels on the river but these are only allowed to go at an idle speed since the whole river is a designated no-wake zone.

In recent years, Blue Run has been known for having a lot of big alligators, so I recommend being extra alert when using this launch area.

The launch is a wooden dock on the south side of the bridge opposite Swampy’s Bar.

There are no kayak or canoe rentals available at Blue Run but this is a popular exit for Rainbow Springs tubing trips.

Final Words

The Rainbow River offers some of the best kayaking in Florida, with crystal clear water, easy river access, and plenty of wildlife.

This is a fantastic way to discover some of the real Florida without traveling too far from the big cities.

As with all lakes and rivers in Florida, always be aware of alligators and avoid disturbing them (it’s against Florida law to feed or harass alligators). Remember to stay hydrated (with a reusable bottle), pack your sunscreen and bug spray, and stay safe on the water.

Exploring Rainbow Springs is easy, even for beginner kayakers

  • Mari Faiello Times staff

DUNNELLON — When looking for a day trip slightly outside of the Tampa Bay area — about two or so hours north — the lure of Rainbow Springs State Park is hard to resist.

Tripadvisor tabbed kayaking on Rainbow River one of the top things to do in Central Florida — it was awarded Travelers’ Choice in 2020 — so sports multimedia producer Rachel West and I were up for the adventure. Even if we cheated slightly with a tour guide.

After spending a recent Tuesday morning out on the water it’s clear Rainbow Springs — the fourth largest spring in the state — is a special place.

We explored Rainbow River via a two-hour, glass-bottom kayak tour with the help of our Get Up and Go Kayaking guide, Lisa Cox, and a small group of patrons visiting from out-of-state.

We paddled up and down the river in a tandem, oversized, clear kayak, which allowed us to see the incredible hues of greens and blues below and through the sidewalls of our watercraft. I hadn’t seen water that transparent since a study-abroad trip to Mykonos, Greece, that Rachel and I took in 2017.

Don’t worry about paddling fast. Cox, 50, let us go at our own pace as long as we were in earshot. And you don’t want to miss her tales about local wildlife.

Not exactly an expert at kayaking? A guide will give a brief lesson before the tour begins. If you can steer a grocery cart, you’ll be fine in a kayak.

Cox has specialized in eco tours for the past three years, paddling in the Florida waters for 10. She started working at Get Up and Go Kayaking last summer when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of some restaurants, an industry Cox was working in at the time.

A highlight of this particular tour happens outside of the kayak, with a short trek to the “hot” springs (or creek).

Cox explained that the water that comes up through these pockets travels through layers of soil and rock before traversing through underground caves and eventually up through the spring. When you step on the bubbles, you sink into the ground a little and the water is lukewarm (which in 72-ish degree water feels hotter than it probably is in reality).

Tubing and camping also are offered in the park, but if you’re focused on kayaking, a few tips:

Know before you go

⋅ When purchasing a ticket online , park admission is not included. It’s $5 per person to enter the park, which is paid at the check-in counter near the parking lot.

⋅ If you’re the type who gets hungry after short periods of time, especially when exerting yourself, eat a light snack before departing. Rainbow River does not allow disposables of any kind — including plastic water bottles — while on the eco tour. You can pack your Yeti, Hydro Flask, Ozark Trail Bottle or any other reusable canister with water. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can drink water straight from the river.

⋅ If you’re interested in taking lots of pretty pictures to brag about later on Instagram, it’s not a bad idea to purchase a waterproof phone case (like a LifeProof ) and/or a waterproof lanyard ( which you can find on Amazon ).

⋅ You can pack other belongings in a dry bag or small backpack. There’s room in the rear of the kayak and if you don’t have access to a dry bag, one is offered to guests before the tour begins.

⋅ Bring a change of clothes and use the changing rooms in the attached restrooms so you’re comfortable for the drive home.

Safety first

What should I bring or wear while spending a day on the water kayaking or paddle boarding? Cox recommends sunscreen, long sleeves, a hat and plenty of water.

What should I do if my kayak flips over? These are calm waters and most kayaks are hard to flip, Cox said, because of their design. She recommends swimming to something stable that you can hold onto. From there, someone in your group will help you retrieve your water vessel.

What’s the most common mistake kayak beginners make? Most beginners paddle fast to get around obstacles (like when approaching a tree, grass, etc.) versus braking and turning around. “Your natural reaction is to want to go faster to get out of the situation,” Cox said.

What should I do if I run into wildlife while I’m out? To avoid and protect the wildlife in these parts, use a passive approach. No touching, only looking, and don’t try to nudge the animals with your paddles.

Rainbow Springs State Park: The Complete Guide

Florida's Rainbow Springs State Park is a slice of heaven on Earth.

Even though Florida's Rainbow Springs State Park is located just an hour and a half northwest of Orlando , it feels like an entirely different planet. While the city is alive with theme parks , tourist attractions, and boisterous nightlife, the park is a quiet sanctuary for those looking to connect with nature. The tranquil setting is a hidden gem that falls off the radar of most travelers, but it has a lot to offer to those willing to seek it out.

The park has been a refuge for wildlife , unique fauna, and human visitors for millennia. Its crystal clear waters—fed by one of the largest natural springs in the country—remain at a constant 72 degrees all year long. This makes it a refreshing place to escape the Central Florida heat, just as Native Americans did for hundreds of years.

Surrounded by a lush forest, the 1,000-acre park is scenic and serene. Visitors can wander along nature trails, take a dip in the cool waters, paddle a canoe or kayak, and spot wildlife in and around the river. There is plenty to see and do in Rainbow Springs State Park , making it a fantastic destination for travelers looking to get away from the typical tourist traps that are found in the area.

Here's what you need to know before you go.

Things to Do

Unsurprisingly, many of the popular activities inside Rainbow Springs State Park revolve around its pristine waters. But even if you don't feel like getting wet, there are still plenty of things to see and do there. Here are a few options for visitors.

Go Canoeing or Kayaking

In addition to being incredibly clear, the park's natural springs are also very smooth and calm. This makes it a fantastic place to go for a paddle , even for complete beginners. Visitors can glide along in a canoe or kayak , exploring this unique natural setting and often encountering wildlife along the way. And if you don't have a boat of your own, rentals are available near the headsprings launch area.

Float on an Inner Tube

For those who don't feel like paddling a canoe or kayak, tubing on the natural springs is an alternative option. The park offers onsite tube rentals, allowing visitors to have a more laid-back experience on the water. The Rainbow River's gentle current will push you along at a relaxed pace that is perfect for soaking up the scenery.

Swimming/Snorkeling

Because the natural springs maintain a constant 72-degree temperature all year round, it is a popular place to go swimming and snorkeling . Additionally, the waters are always crystal clear, which enhances the experience nicely. The depth of the water typically ranges between 10-18 feet, so swimmers are encouraged to wear life jackets or use pool noodles for their own safety. Inflatable rafters, tubes, and other equipment are not allowed.

Hike the Nature Trail

The park has a 2.5-mile-long nature trail that allows visitors to stretch their legs before or after taking a plunge in the river. The route is relatively smooth, paved, and well-shaded, offering great views of the Rainbow River, as well as three manmade waterfalls. An offshoot route even takes hikers past an old phosphate pit—a mineral that is found in abundance in the area and was once commercially mined there.

Spot Wildlife

Keen-eyed visitors to Rainbow Springs may spot some unique wildlife during their time in the park. Turtles, otters, and manatees can often be seen enjoying the refreshing waters and soaking up the sun. The park is also home to an array of bird species , including the great egret, green heron, ruby-throated hummingbirds, barn owls, and dozens more. There are even 40 species of butterflies that live in the region, bringing flashes of color to the lush setting.

Best Hikes and Trails

Rainbow Springs State Park only has one hiking trail , although it does offer a few short side routes for visitors to explore. The 2.5-mile-long loop starts at the Visitor Center and is an easy walk, with only a few rolling hills to traverse. The main path is paved as well, making it accessible to all visitors, including those in wheelchairs. Some of the side trails—including the one out to the phosphate pit—are unpaved, however, although they remain highly accessible.

While the route isn't long or strenuous, it is definitely enchanting. The path wanders through a garden where magnolia trees and azalea bushes grow and is often covered by a canopy of oak trees. Hikers will find several scenic locations that overlook the Rainbow River, and birders will love the opportunity to spot new species. The trail even passes by three waterfalls—a rarity in the relatively-flat state of Florida .

Even when stopping to take in the sights, most visitors can walk the entire trail in under an hour. The path is well-marked, easy to follow, and very quiet on weekdays. It can get somewhat crowded on weekends, however, so plan your visit accordingly.

Campgrounds

The Rainbow Springs State Park Campground is located outside the park itself, just a few miles from the main headspring and day-use area. It features 60 individual sites for both tent and RV camping , many of which offer scenic views of the river. Pets are welcomed at the campsites, although they should remain on a leash at all times and are prohibited from buildings and swimming areas.

Each campsite includes water and sewer hookups for RVs, along with electric, including 20, 30, and 50-amp shorepower. Onsite amenities include a store, restrooms, showers, and a laundromat. Canoes and kayaks can be rented there as well, and RVers can access a dump station on the premises.

For security reasons, the campground has a gate that remains closed at all times. Visitors with a campsite reservation can obtain the gate code by calling the campground office at 352-465-8550 between 10:00 am and 5:30 pm daily. The code changes periodically, so it may be necessary to obtain a new one during your stay.

The Rainbow Springs campground can get crowded on weekends and during the busy summer travel season. Those planning to stay there are encouraged to make a reservation well in advance of their visit. Reservations can be made online or by calling 800-326-3521 or TDD 888-433-0287. The cost of camping in the park is $30/night.

There are no hotels or lodges located inside Rainbow Springs State Park. Visitors who don't plan on camping will find an array of accommodations in the nearby town of Dunnellon and the city of Ocala . Both metropolitan areas have a variety of national hotel chains, B&Bs, and homestay rentals , with Ocala having a larger selection to choose from.

Visitors will find accommodation options to fit any budget, with most located within a short drive of the park. Some of the more unique and eclectic places to stay in the area include the Gator Den Motel , the Country Chalet Inn , and The Equestrian .

How to Get There

Rainbow Springs State Park is located just five miles outside of Dunnellon, off US Highway 41 N. along SW 81st Pl Rd. Signs mark the way, making it easy to find the main entrance.

Visitors arriving from Ocala will take FL-40 W to US Highway 41 S, turning onto SW 81st Pl Rd. The drive is about 22 miles in length and takes about a half hour to reach the park.

Gainesville is located roughly an hour's drive from Rainbow Springs. Travelers can take FL-121 south onto US Highway 41 before turning onto SW 81st Pl Rd.

Visitors making their way to the park from Orlando will travel on FL-408 W to Fl-50 W before turning onto the Florida Turnpike toll road. Stay on that highway to Ocala before exiting onto FL-40 W to 41S and eventually SW 81st Pl Rd. The trip covers nearly 100 miles and takes about two hours to complete.

Keep in mind, the park has three entrances. The main entrance is found off 81st Place Rd., but there is another entrance from the campground located on the east side of the river at 181815 SW 94th St. The third entrance is designated for visitors who want to go tubing on the river and is found at 10830 SW 180th Avenue. When navigating to the park, be sure you pick the right option.

The largest airports in the region are the Gainesville Regional Airport and Orland International . There are also several smaller county airports in the area, but renting a car and driving from one of the large access points is likely to be more economical.

Accessibility

Rainbow Springs gets high marks for offering a variety of accessible amenities. The park's facilities, including Visitor Center, restrooms, and parking lot, are wheelchair-accessible and ADA-compliant. The campground also has campsites—along with the camp store, showers, and laundromat— that offer wheelchair access. Additionally, all of the picnic facilities, concession stand, ornamental gardens, amphitheater , and interpretive exhibits are also accessible.

The 2.5-mile nature trail has a smooth paved surface that is well-maintained but was built before ADA guidelines were common. Because of this, the route can be uneven and difficult to maneuver by wheelchair in a few areas. The rolling hills also offer some steep inclines that can be hard to navigate as well. While it is not completely inaccessible to handicapped visitors, it isn't an easy path to follow either. The route does include a number of shaded benches that make good places to take a break when needed.

Some of the side trails are unpaved and can get muddy, which makes them less accessible by wheelchair or powered mobility device. Getting into the water can be a challenge, too, particularly in the designated swimming area, which has a ladder but lacks a pool lift. This limits the options for handicapped visitors looking to take a dip in natural springs .

Tips for Your Visit

  • Rainbow Springs State Park charges a nominal entry fee of $2. Tube, canoe, and kayak rentals cost extra.
  • Because the park is a wildlife preserve, fishing is not allowed in the headsprings day-use area. Registered campers can fish in the campground area, however, provided they have a Florida fishing license .
  • While there are limited drink and snack options at the park's Visitor Center, there are no restaurants on the premises. There is a concession stand near the headsprings entrance that serves sandwiches and snacks.
  • Nearby Dunnellon does have several restaurants to choose from, however, with Swampy's Bar & Grill and the Blue Gator among the local favorites.
  • There are uncovered picnic tables and grills available to visitors inside the park. Bring your own food and drinks to enjoy lunch in a wonderful outdoor setting.
  • The park can get crowded on weekends, particularly in the summer. But during the week, it tends to be relatively quiet. Mondays and Tuesdays can be an especially good time to visit.
  • Some archaeologists believe that humans have been swimming in the natural springs for more than 10,000 years. Keep that in mind as you take the plunge yourself.
  • Snorkeling is allowed in the buoyed swimming area only while at the headsprings. Visitors can also snorkel at the campgrounds or from a boat outside the headsprings. A dive flag is required in those areas.
  • The park has four pavilions available for special events, like family reunions or work retreats. Those locations include picnic tables, grills, electricity, and water. There is also an amphitheater in the campground.
