PwC extends as a ‘Proud Partner’ of Players Championship

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has extended its sponsorship of the Players Championship through 2017.

Under terms of the agreement, financial details of which were not released, PwC will serve as one of the golf tournament's two 'Proud Partners' for the duration of the deal's tenure.

The other 'Proud Partner' of the annual PGA Tour event, each year held at TPC Sawgrass, is Jeld-Wen Windows and Doors.

"It’s just hard to overestimate the importance of it. They do other things, but this is their one big deal for the year. To pick The Players speaks volumes as to the calibre and stature of the event," said Players Championship executive director Matt Rapp.

Jay Henderson, PwC vice chairman, added, "Our clients appreciate the opportunity to have that chance to broaden their own network. Many senior executives have their own networks — they may have a network geographically, or within their own industry sector, but to be able to cut across a variety of different sectors in a pretty focused period of time, that’s what’s really important for them."

The 2012 Players Championship is scheduled to begin on 10th May.

The PGA Tour is north of the border for its annual Canadian visit.

The 2024 RBC Canadian Open is being contested this week at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario.

Two-time winner and world No. 2 Rory McIlroy — who admitted he was “groggy” after his first round — is joined in the field by defending champion and countryman Nick Taylor.

Fellow Canadian Adam Hadwin is there as well. A year ago, he was tackled by a security guard known only as Mr. X, who finally broke silence about the 18th hole takedown but did so without identifying himself.

Among the others in the field: Tommy Fleetwood, Sahith Theegala, Cameron Young, Sam Burns, Shane Lowry and Sean O’Hair, who was the last man to get into the field who had to drive five hours to catch a flight.

The purse at the 2024 RBC Canadian Open is $9.1 million with $1.638 million going to the winner. The champion will also receive 500 FedEx Cup points.

2024 Charles Schwab Challenge final results: Prize money payout, PGA Tour leaderboard and how much each golfer won

The 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge final leaderboard is headed by winner Davis Riley, who earns his second PGA Tour title with a win at Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worh, Texas.

Riley won his first solo PGA Tour title with a dominant five-shot win over Scottie Scheffler and Keegan Bradley on 14-under 266. A final round of even-par 71 was good enough to seal the deal.

Collin Morikawa finished in solo fourth place on 8-under total, a shot behind the runners-up.

Riley won the $1,638,000 winner's share of the $9,100,000 purse.

Charles Schwab Challenge recap notes

Riley earned 52 Official World Golf Ranking points with the win in the 72-hole stroke-play championship, which helps his place in the world ranking.

Riley earned 500 FedEx Cup points, with the PGA Tour points offered at the standard level for this event.

A total of 71 (of 132) players finished the tournament after a 36-hole cut was made in this event.

PGA Tour edges closer to $1.5 billion merger with Saudi PIF - leaving LIV Golf's future in question

A merger between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) - the funders of LIV Golf - feels closer than ever as the parties are thought to have exchanged term sheets.

Last year, the PGA Tour , DP World Tour (also known as the European Tour), and PIF revealed a framework agreement they hoped would help put an end to the internal strife caused by the launch of LIV in 2022.

The agreement is set to give the PGA Tour a hefty cash boost of $1.5 billion and should allow the globe's top golfers to face off more regularly. However, progress has been slow and various deadlines have been missed since the initial announcement, sparking widespread doubts that the deal would actually go through.

Jimmy Dunne and Mark Flaherty, two members of the PGA Tour's policy board, have both resigned, with Dunne expressing frustration over the dynamics on the board as player-directors Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, and Patrick Cantlay took charge of negotiations.

Rory McIlroy, who stepped down from the policy board in November and failed in his bid to rejoin earlier this month, confessed ahead of last week's PGA Championship that his confidence that an agreement with PIF could be reached was at an all-time low.

"Honestly, I think it's a huge loss for the PGA Tour if they are trying to get the deal done with PIF and unify the game," McIlory said.

"Jimmy was basically the relationship - the sort of conduit between the PGA Tour and PIF. It's been really unfortunate that he hasn't been involved for the past few months and part of the reason I think everything is stalling at the minute is because of that. It's really disappointing and I think the tour is in a worse place because of it.

"We'll see where it goes from here, we'll see what happens, but I would say my confidence level on getting something done before last week was as low as it had been, and with this news of Jimmy resigning and knowing the relationship he has with the other side and how much warmth there is from the other side, it's concerning."

But according to the New York Times , negotiations between the PGA Tour and PIF have made progress, with both parties outlining their conditions for a deal in term sheets.

The PGA Tour would retain majority control of its enterprises, while PIF and Strategic Sports Group - a group of billionaires with strong ties to American sports that secured a $1.5 billion investment deal with the tour earlier this year - would hold minority stakes.

However, the deal's future remains uncertain due to doubts surrounding LIV Golf's longevity. Despite making waves with high-profile signings like Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau on lucrative contracts, the league has yet to solidify its status as a mainstream spectacle, with viewing figures falling short of expectations.

Should LIV falter in a merger agreement, it's likely that the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) would probe the situation based on antitrust laws. The DoJ would also scrutinize any merger for potential interlocking directorates, where board members hold positions in multiple companies.

PGA Tour-LIV Golf Timeline: One year has passed and golf fans still are waiting for a deal

It was one of those news drops all golf fans never will forget.

June 6, 2023: The PGA Tour and LIV Golf announce a "framework agreement" to merge business entities after weeks of secret negotiations.

The PGA Tour, whose roots go back more than a century, and LIV Golf, the upstart league launched in June 2021 with tour antagonist Greg Norman as its face and financed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, forming an alliance?

This cannot be happening.

After two years of player poaching, lawsuits, nasty insults from both sides and talk of Saudi Arabia's atrocious human rights violations, the vision of PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan side-by-side on a CNBC set detailing how the rival leagues will combine commercial businesses and rights into a new for-profit company, and drop all lawsuits, truly was surreal.

How has that gone?

At first, we were told that the "merger" — later reframed as an "agreement" — would be finalized by Dec. 31 and the PIF would be writing a very large check (somewhere between $1 billion and $2 billion) to boost PGA Tour Enterprises.  But New Year's Eve came and went without a deal, and now, one year later, we appear no closer than we were six months ago.

And after a brief cease-fire, some members, from both sides, resumed taking shots at each other, and LIV Golf, which has headquarters in West Palm Beach, went back to poaching PGA Tour stars.

"It's messy, and it has been and it seems to get messier every week," Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America, said at the PGA Championship. "I don't think the game is big enough for two tours like that, and I think we are diluting the game in a way that is not healthy.

"I hope there's urgency because I do think it's doing damage to the tour, to the game. … I just don't think it's a healthy situation right now."

Here is a timeline of the ebbs and flows of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf when it comes to a possible merger:

If you can't beat them, join them

While surprised that everything came together so quickly, Rory McIlroy said the PGA Tour’s partnership with the PIF ultimately will be good for the game. Speaking the week the agreement was announced, McIlroy said much of it has been mischaracterized and it should not be viewed as a merger with LIV Golf.

“LIV has nothing to do with this," he said. "It’s the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour and the Public Investment Fund that are basically partnering to create a new company. That’s where I was a little frustrated. All I’ve wanted to do was protect the future of the PGA Tour and protect the aspirational nature of what the PGA Tour stands for. I think this does this.

"If you look at the structure, this new company sits above everything else. Jay on top of that. Technically, anyone involved with LIV would answer to Jay. The PIF was going to keep spending money in golf. At least the PGA Tour controls how that money is spent. You’re dealing with one of the biggest sovereign wealth funds in the world. Would you rather fight against or have them as a partner?"

Greg Norman's message to staff

Although not involved in the negotiations, LIV's chief executive and commissioner Norman, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, had a positive message for the staff. Norman, who was left out of the negotiations and not mentioned in any of the news releases associated with the agreement, told more than 100 people on a 30-minute call that LIV will see no operational changes and that work is already being done on a 2025 schedule.

“The spigot is now wide open for commercial sponsorships, blue-chip companies, TV networks," he said. "LIV is and will continue to be a standalone enterprise. Our business model will not change. We changed history and we’re not going anywhere."

Players losing trust in Monahan

The main topic of conversation at the U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club was the announcement the previous week. Some players were open about expressing their anger and lack of trust in the tour and Monahan.

"I think it gets to a point where you want to have faith in management, and I want to have faith that this is the best thing for all of us, but it's clear that that's not the consensus," Jon Rahm said. "I think the general feeling is that a lot of people feel a bit of betrayal from management."

Those words were prophetic coming from a man who, six months later, became the biggest name to defect from the PGA Tour.

Agreement dissected on Capitol Hill

About a month after the agreement, drama played out on Capitol Hill with tour COO Ron Price and policy board independent director Jimmy Dunne, of North Palm Beach, testifying at a Senate investigations subcommittee hearing.

They were grilled by a bipartisan committee that was concerned about antitrust violations. Aside from politicians attempting to bully Price and Dunne or just looking for air time, one of the more interesting revelations was the PIF proposing Tiger Woods and McIlroy being granted ownership of LIV Golf franchises. This idea was shot down by the PGA Tour.

Tiger getting involved

Before joining the PGA Tour policy board on Aug. 1, Woods led a group of more than 40 players in signing a list of demands of Monahan. The move was made to reestablish control of the PGA Tour after players heard about Monahan's secretive meetings with the PIF.

Woods became the sixth player director on the policy board, giving players more say in any final decisions.

Monahan regrets agreement rollout

Speaking for the first time since taking a medical leave of absence one week after the deal was announced because of anxiety over the deal, Monahan took responsibility for the awkward rollout of the framework agreement, saying there was a lot of misinformation leading to distrust.

"That's on me," he said.

“My biggest regret was not being more patient on the night of June 5, moving to make this announcement the next day."

Norman confident about LIV's future

In October, Norman spoke publicly for the first time since the agreement. He was at LIV's final event of the season at Doral.

Norman was upbeat and confident his league was on the upswing and promised LIV was here to stay. As far as his future … when asked about Price's comment at July's Senate subcommittee hearing that Norman is "out of a job" if a deal is reached, Norman shrugged.

"I knew it wasn't true," he said. "There's so much white noise floating around out there that I actually paid zero attention to.

"Sitting in this seat today, I know every step I've made has been for the right reasons. Right reasons for the game of golf. … So I was never in any fear of anybody saying anything or any animus against me or anything like that. Because the business model works."

LIV releases most of 2024 schedule

Soon after the conclusion of the 2023 season, LIV made it official that it was moving forward without interruption. Despite the ongoing negotiations, it announced most of its 2024 schedule, which included seven domestic and seven international events.

The original schedule did not include sites for the final two events: the individual and team championships. Those later were announced as Chicago and Dallas, respectively.

Rahm proves he has a price

Six months after the framework agreement, Rahm announced on Fox News: "I have officially joined LIV Golf." He was wearing an LIV letterman's jacket.

The Spaniard and No. 3 golfer in the world clearly is LIV's biggest and most important addition since its launch, sending the message, "We are still here, we are not going anywhere." And for LIV, that was worth the reported $550 million Rahm will receive, including bonuses.

The man who once refuted all LIV rumors by saying $400 million would not change his lifestyle proved he had a price after all.

Woods stands firm on deadline

Despite reports negotiations were dragging and Dec. 31 would come and go without a deal, Woods remained optimistic, right to the end.

Speaking in December from the PNC Championship in Orlando where he teamed with his son, Charlie, Tiger insisted nothing has changed when it comes to the deadline.

"As of right now, that is our time frame and our deadline," he said. "That was set forth back in early June. And that hasn't changed."

Nothing drops on New Year's Eve

Like the ball in Times Square, the PGA Tour and PIF were hoping to drop an announcement that would put an end to golf's civil war.

The year came and went and the only announcement was that the sides were prepared to continue negotiating.

PGA Tour finds major investor in SSG

The long-awaited deal between the PGA Tour and Strategic Sports Group was announced in late January. The SSG, a collective of marquee professional sports franchise owners headed by Fenway Sports Group, is pumping $3 billion into the tour. That included an initial investment of $1.5 billion into the launch of a commercial venture, PGA Tour Enterprises.

That makes SSG the tour's major financial partner, which had some, like Woods, now hinting maybe the tour no longer needed PIF's money.

"The monies that they have come to the table with, and what we initially had agreed to in the framework agreement, those are all the same numbers," Woods said about the SSG investment.

Tyrrell Hatton follows Rahm to LIV

LIV's strong offseason continued with the long-awaited signing of England's Tyrrell Hatton . The 16th-ranked golfer in the world joined in February, just before LIV's first event of the year, in Mexico. Hatton joined Rahm's team, confirming LIV would be adding a 13th team.

Hatton's signing came after Germany's Adrian Meronk, No. 39 in the world, joined LIV.

Monahan offers little at Players

Monahan's much-anticipated state of the game address from The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach in March lacked substance. The commissioner offered very little, other than confirming he recently met with Al-Rumayyan and talks are "accelerating."

While McIlroy continued to believe in Monahan's leadership and a deal being finalized — that later eroded, as we will see — Xander Schauffele was not so sure. "I would say in my book he's got a long way to go to gain the trust of the membership," Schauffele said.

And world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler placed the blame for golf's fractured state squarely on those who joined LIV.

"If the fans are upset, then look at the guys that left," Scheffler said. "We had a tour, we were all together, and the people that left are no longer here. At the end of the day, that's where the splintering comes from."

More false hope after Bahamas meeting

Members of the PGA Tour Enterprises board, including Monahan and all six player directors — Woods, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati — met with Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas soon after the Players Championship.

Monahan called the meeting "constructive." Woods said. "We're headed in the right direction."

LIV players: Deal needed to save sport

LIV golfers weighed in on the negotiations from the event at Doral with Bryson DeChambeau saying there needs to be more of a sense of urgency.

"The only answer is for us to somehow come together in some sort of terms where it makes sense and for us to be playing all again in somewhat of the same boat," DeChambeau said. "And it needs to happen fast. It's not a two-year thing. Like it needs to happen quicker rather than later just for the good of the sport. Too many people are losing interest."

LIV looking to buy golf courses

Norman revealed in May that LIV Golf has thought about owning all its golf courses with each team having a home venue on which to host an event.

"And now you can build out around that," Norman told Bloomberg News. "It’s not just a golf course. You bring in education, hospitality, real estate, merchandise, management, and all these other different opportunities that the game of golf has to deliver to a community or to a region. We are going to be doing that.”

Jimmy Dunne resigns from PGA Tour policy board

Dunne, one of the architects of the framework agreement, resigned from the tour’s policy board the week of the PGA Championship. The North Palm Beach resident and president of Seminole Golf Club said since helping negotiate the agreement, "no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with the PIF, I feel like my role is utterly superfluous."

Woods said the amount of work and dedication Dunne put into the board and into the PGA Tour has been "incredible."

McIlroy offered a grim outlook on the negotiations with Dunne no longer involved.

"I would say my confidence level on something getting done before last week was, you know, as low as it had been," McIlroy said. "And then with this news of Jimmy resigning and knowing the relationship he has with the other side, and how much warmth there is from the other side, it's concerning."

One year later and still no deal

A year has passed since that stunning announcement of a framework agreement and about six months since the deadline to turn that into a final deal.

And still, nothing.

But are we getting closer? According to The New York Times, possibly. Maybe?

But it also added a deal is far from certain with the future of LIV Golf still to be decided.

Grayson Murray, a 2-time PGA Tour winner, dies by suicide

Grayson Murray, a 30-year-old professional golfer and two-time PGA Tour winner, died on Saturday.

He died by suicide, his family said.

"We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone," his parents Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement on Sunday shared by the PGA Tour. "It’s a nightmare."

Murray had spoken publicly about his struggles with depression and unhealthy alcohol use and how those issues fueled some of his lowest points in his professional career.

"Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now," his parents said in the statement.

His death came a day after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge, citing an unspecified illness. Playing in Fort Worth, Texas, on Friday he was 5 over par when he pulled out during the second round of the tournament with two holes remaining.

The PGA Tour announced his death in a statement on Saturday: "We were devastated to learn — and are heartbroken to share — that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in the statement . “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones. “

At age 23, the Raleigh, N.C., native won his first PGA Tour title with the Barbasol Championship in 2017 — his rookie year. But his game struggled in the seasons that followed, according to the PGA Tour press release.

At the Sony Open, he recalled that first year on the PGA Tour. “I was young and thought I was invincible — wasn’t doing the correct stuff off the course to really give myself the best chance to succeed out here,” he told reporters.

Last year, he found success again on the Korn Ferry Tour, placing fourth and earning back his spot on the PGA Tour.

He appeared to be on a career comeback after winning the Sony Open in Hawaii in January — his first PGA Tour victory in seven years.

At the time, he credited sobriety and his supportive family for helping him feel “more at peace inside the ropes.”

“I’m over eight months sober now. I have a beautiful fiancée that I love so much and who is so supportive of me, and my parents are so supportive of me,” he said . “They’re right there with me when I do have those hard days.”

In addition to his parents, Murray is survived by his brother Cameron and sister Erica.

His parents thanked the golfing community for its support in the wake of their son's death.

They also issued a plea — to "honor Grayson by being kind to one another."

"If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else," their statement read.

Grayson Murray’s parents say the two-time PGA Tour winner died of suicide

Grayson Murray’s parents said Sunday their 30-year-old son took his own life, just one day after he withdrew from a PGA Tour event. The family asked for privacy and that people honor Murray by being kind to one another.

“If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else,” Eric and Terry Murray said in a statement released by the PGA Tour.

Murray, a two-time PGA Tour winner, spoke in January after winning the Sony Open in Honolulu about turning the corner in his life, his golf and battles with alcoholism and mental health. He died Saturday morning.

Murray had to go through the Korn Ferry Tour to get his PGA Tour card back. And then he birdied the last hole at the Sony Open to get into a playoff, and made a 40-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole for an emotional win.

“It’s not easy,” Murray said immediately after winning. “I wanted to give up a lot of times. Give up on myself. Give up on the game of golf. Give up on life, at times.”

Murray tied for 43rd last week in the PGA Championship, which enabled him to hold his position among the top 60 to earn a spot in the U.S. Open next month at Pinehurst No. 2 in his native North Carolina.

He shot 68 in the opening round at Colonial. The next round, he was 5 over and coming off three straight bogeys when he withdrew citing an illness.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said he spoke with Murray’s parents about halting play at Colonial and they insisted the golf tournament continue.

Monahan flew to Fort Worth, Texas, to be with players. Many of them wore black-and-red pins on their caps Sunday in honor of Murray. Those are the colors of the Carolina Hurricanes, his favorite NHL team.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone. It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare,” his parents shared in their statement.

“We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and — it seems — by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.

“Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now.”

Grayson was a raw talent after taking up golf at age 8. He won his age division three straight years at the prestigious Junior World Championship in San Diego. But he struggled to fit in at college, going to Wake Forest, East Carolina and then Arizona State.

His first coach was Ted Kiegel in North Carolina, who like so many others was devastated.

“Words cannot express the tragedy of this moment,” Kiegel said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. “Grayson came from something that was ordinary and made it EXTRAORDINARY. ... He burned bright for the 30 years he gave us.”

Murray won as a 22-year-old rookie at the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky, and frustration began to set in as he didn’t improve as quickly as others whom he routinely beat as amateurs.

He was always open about depression and anxiety, and his bouts with alcohol. One of his darker moments was at the Sony Open in 2021 when he was suspended for an incident in a Hawaii bar. Murray took to social media to say, “Why was I drunk? Because I’m a (expletive) alcoholic that hates everything to do with the PGA Tour life and that’s my scapegoat.”

He also accused the tour of not giving him proper help, which the tour denied.

Monahan said Saturday at Colonial that he called Murray right after that posting and subsequently spent a lot of time with him.

“I think one of the elements of his legacy is his resiliency,” Monahan said. “So you think of going back to 2017, winning the Barbasol Championship, going back and forth between the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour. ... self-assessing, coming back, becoming in his own eyes a stronger human being, and then winning three times in the past year.

“To me, that’s a level of resiliency that is extraordinary.”

When he won on the Korn Ferry Tour last year, Murray talked about his parents having “been through hell and back basically for the last six years for me fighting some mental stuff.”

“Everyone has their battles,” Murray said a year ago. “Sometimes people are able to hide them and function, and sometimes you’re not. I think our society now is getting better about accepting that it’s OK to not be OK. I’ve embraced that mentality. I’m not ashamed that I go through depression and anxiety.”

He also used social media to reach out to others dealing with similar issues in a sport where losing takes place far more than winning.

Murray said in January after he won the Sony Open that he often felt like a failure who had wasted his talent.

“It was a bad place, but like I said, you have to have courage,” he said. “You have to have the willingness to keep going. Lo and behold, that’s what I did, and I’m here, and I’m so blessed and I’m thankful.”

He saw that Sony Open victory — which got him into the Masters for the first time — as the start of a new chapter. He said he had become a Christian and was engaged to Christiana Ritchie. He said in January the wedding had been planned for late April.

“My story is not finished. I think it’s just beginning,” Murray said in Hawaii. “I hope I can inspire a lot of people going forward that have their own issues.”

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan confirmed Murray’s death in a statement Saturday. On Sunday, Murray’s family said in a statement that he had killed himself.

“The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same,” Monahan said in the statement. “We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

On Friday, Murray withdrew from the second round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness. He had finished all but the final two holes in the round. He had bogeyed the final three holes and was 5-over-par, which ended up being the cut line.

Monahan said he spoke with Murray’s parents, who requested the tournament to continue.

“They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so,” Monahan said. “As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Bubba Watson, a 12-time PGA Tour winner, paid tribute to Murray on X and recalled seeing Murray at this year’s Masters.

“Very sad to hear the news of Grayson Murray’s passing today. Life is so fragile,” Watson tweeted. “I was just hugging you at the Masters, telling you how proud of you I am. Thankful to have known you. My deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. He will be missed.”

Murray had publicly battled alcoholism and mental health issues, but he returned to form and earned his PGA Tour card back this fall and won the Sony Open in Hawaii in January . He made the cut at both the Masters and the PGA Championship the last two months and finished T10 at the signature event Wells Fargo Championship just two weeks ago. He was ranked as the No. 58 player in the world by the Official World Golf Ranking.

Peter Malnati spoke on the CBS broadcast about Murray, who he played with the first two days of the Charles Schwab Challenge.

“We all want to beat each other. And then something like this happens and you realize we’re all just humans,” Malnati said, fighting back tears. “It’s a really hard day.

“You look at Grayson and you see him. Someone who has visibly outwardly struggled in the past. And he’s been open about it. You see him kind of get his life back to a place where he’s feeling good about things. It’s just so sad.”

A North Carolina native who attended Wake Forest, East Carolina and Arizona State during his collegiate career, Murray became the second youngest player to make the cut at a Korn Ferry Tour event at 16, and he played as an amateur in the U.S. Open at 19. He quickly earned a PGA Tour card as a professional in 2017 and won the Barbasol Championship that year for his first win on tour.

Over time, Murray became known for his angry outbursts on the course and the PGA Tour putting him on probation three years ago for an incident at a hotel bar, also in Hawaii. He tweeted after the incident, “Why was I drunk? Because I’m a f—ing alcoholic that hates everything to do with the PGA Tour life and that’s my scapegoat.” He then accused the tour of not giving him proper help, which the tour denied.

After struggles on and off the course, Murray said he received treatment for addiction and won twice on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2023.

“There are days where I didn’t want to get out of bed,” Murray said after his win in January. “I just thought I was a failure. I always looked at myself as a failure. I thought I had a lot of talent that was just a waste of talent. It was a bad place, but like I said, you have to have courage. You have to have the willingness to keep going. Lo and behold, that’s what I did, and I’m here, and I’m so blessed and I’m thankful.”

US PGA Championship 2024: Fantasy DP World Tour ones to watch

All eyes are on Valhalla this week for the US PGA Championship. But who are you picking in your team on the DP World Tour's official Fantasy game for the second men's Major of the year?

The 106th  US PGA Championship  returns to Valhalla Golf Club this week for the second men’s Major Championship of the season, marking the fourth time Valhalla has played host, tied for second most in the history of the event.

Last year, it was Brooks Koepka who claimed his third US PGA Championship title with a two-shot victory over Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler at Oak Hill Country Club. In doing so, he became the sixth player to win the championship on three or more occasions - joining Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus (five), Tiger Woods (four), Gene Sarazen and Sam Snead (three).

He returns in form and with a recent victory under his belt, but he'll have stiff competition in his title defence, going up against an in form Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, who both have back-to-back wins heading into this week.

The last time the tournament was played at Valhalla it was McIlroy who took home the trophy, and ten years on from that triumph he'll be hoping to replicate that as he goes in search of a fifth Major title. Meanwhile, World Number One Scottie Scheffler will be looking to continue his dominance after winning The Masters last month.

Elsewhere, Jordan Spieth has a chance to complete the Grand Slam with victory this week, while several DP World Tour stars head across the pond looking to impress - including Asian Swing winner Sebastian Soderberg. Fantasy Insight: As it stands, World Number One Scottie Scheffler is the favourite for players of our _ Fantasy Game this week , featuring in 84.52% of teams. _Only two other players have been picked by more than 50% of users, with Ludvig Aberg in 69% of teams and four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy in 65.35%.

Favourite - Scottie Scheffler

The World Number One is unquestionably the favourite to earn a second leg of the Grand Slam this week, and arrives to the Louisville venue having just become a new dad to son Bennett with his wife Meredith.

Scheffler, who is a four-time winner already this year, comes to the second Major of the year with back-to-back victories to his name. Having earned his second Green Jacket with a second Major win at The Masters in April, Scheffler followed up with another immediately triumph at the RBC Heritage.

The American hasn't finished worse than T17 in 2024, and leads the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained Total, Tee To Green, Approach the Green and Around the Green. The only question mark around Scottie is his consistency on the greens - currently ranked 97th on Tour in that category - but with multiple wins already under his belt, that hasn't been a detrimental factor!

Form horse - Rory McIlroy

The Northern Irishman returns to the scene of his 2014 PGA Championship triumph at Valhalla this week as he goes in search of his first Major since he claimed that title here ten years ago.

He arrives in Kentucky in exceptional form with two consecutive wins to his name, having claimed both the Zurich Class with Shane Lowry two weeks ago and last week's Wells Fargo Championship.

With top tens in seven of his last nine Major championships - including his last two PGA Championships - McIlroy himself said it feels like the stars are somewhat aligning when it comes to his chances this week. And it helps that this is a venue where he's had success.

“Going to a venue next week where I have won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit," he said.

"But I have a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat. I am going into the next Major of the year feeling really good about myself.”

Wildcard - Sebastian Soderberg

Sebastian Söderberg may have seen victory slip away at the Volvo China Open but a third successive top-five finish meant he topped the Asian Swing Rankings to earn a spot in his first Major since the 2022 U.S. Open Championship.

The Swede is on a hot streak, and while this might be his first Major in two years and his US PGA Championship debut, there's no doubt that his form is one of the best leading into this event. In his last three starts on the DP World Tour, Soderberg had back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Hero Indian Open and ISPS HANDA-Championship, before his recent tie for third at the Volvo China Open.

Having not missed a cut since July last year, Soderberg also ranks first on the DP World Tour for Stroke Average, Total Strokes Gained, Birdies and Par three scoring, second for Strokes Gained Putting, and fourth for both Strokes Gained Approach and Strokes Gained Tee to Green.

And while he hasn't been in the winner's circle since the 2019 Omega European Masters, he's certainly got the form to do something special this week.
