Hikers prepare for up to 100-mile challenges on in Allegheny National Forest

allegheny sport travel and outdoor show

Hikers from several states will soon be navigating up to 100 miles of trail in northwestern Pennsylvania, mainly in the Allegheny National Forest as part of a unique personal quest.

The Allegheny 100 Challenge , a noncompetitive event, will take place June 7 to 9 on the North Country Trail.

The challenge is organized by the Allegheny National Forest Chapter of the North Country Trail Association . Alisha Glasgow, co-chair of the event with Tina Toole, said, "It is the longest scenic trail in the U.S., it’s like 4,800 miles.”

The local chapter manages close to 100 miles of the pathway.

The fundraiser started about 14 years ago and is capped at 200 participants.

“We wanted to get more people hiking on this trail and we came up with this challenge,” she said. “It’s grown into something big now and it raises money for us to maintain the trail; we build bridges, we buy equipment. Everything we make goes back into the trail."

The event has sold out, but some walk-in registrations are taken the first day of the event. The hikers have several distance options to consider.

“Usually about half attempt the 100 mile. So about 100, maybe a little less than that and usually about 20 finish,” Glasgow said.

Of the remaining 100 hikers, the next most popular challenge is 50 miles, and then they have about 20 people sign up for each of the 25 and 75 mile jaunts.

In 2023, 29 hikers completed 25 miles; 88 completed 50 miles; 14 completed 75 miles; and 24 completed 100 miles.

“People park their cars where they are going to finish, and we have a bus that picks them up and takes them to the start, everyone starts at the same place and they walk to their cars,” Glasgow said.

The starting area alternates between the north and south ends of the chapter’s territory. This year it starts at Willow Bay on the northern end of the trail.

Hikers will start out at 6 p.m. June 7 and have 50 hours to finish their distance by 8 p.m. June 9.

With a 50-hour time limit, it can be a challenge for people to complete all 100 miles.

“People think, ‘Well it’s 2 mph, but it’s way more than that, because you’re hiking at night and I think that’s one of the biggest challenges and then people can’t rest very well,” she said. “A lot of people fail before they get it.”

The hike reconnects people with nature.

“You get views of the reservoir. I personally believe as you go further south, the scenery changes a lot. It’s more kind of deep woods up north. It’s very hilly, rooty and rocky,” she said.  “What’s really nice about our section of trail is that there’s very few road crossings. There are forest road crossings for oil and gas, but it’s really all trail. The rest of the North Country Trail in Pennsylvania, you go in and out of woods and you have to do some road walks. We’re really lucky that we have so much trail.

“Most (hikers) come from Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio, but we have people who come from Michigan, we’ve had some people come from Colorado. Usually there are one or two who come from long distances."

Kim Gustafson, 50, of Erie, grew up hiking and has been enjoying this challenge for more than a decade. “My parents started us backpacking when I was just a little kid, so I’ve been doing it all my life,” she said.

Gustafson started participating in the A-100 in the event’s third year. “I’ve done it every year that they had it, except for the first two,” she said. The challenge was canceled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I worked my way up to the 100 miles. I did the 25, and then I did the 50, then 75 and then I did the 100,” she said.

She’s completed the 100-mile challenge twice, once in each direction.

More: What should I do if I find a young animal in the wild? Advice is simple

“It felt like quite the accomplishment. I didn’t know if I was going to able to do it, but I did it and was proud that I was able to do that,” she said.

She normally goes solo, but sometimes ends up finding someone who walks a similar pace to enjoy the adventure together. Both times she took on the 100-mile course, her father, Bob Bailey, met her halfway through.

“He hiked the second 50 with me so I had someone to hike with,” she said.

This year’s she doing the 50-mile course because she also wants to volunteer on Sunday, the last day of the event. She’s also volunteering before the race helping to coordinate the busing.

Gustafson likes the course as the event starts early evening from Willow Bay and heads along the Allegheny Reservoir toward Sugar Bay.

“It’s not competitive at all. Everyone is just out there to challenge themselves and get out in nature," she said. "There are people from all over. We’ve met people from Florida, Michigan, Connecticut, New Hampshire; there are people from all over the country."

For those getting into hiking challenges, she said, “Hike your own hike. Don’t try to keep up with somebody else because that’s sometimes when you get into problems and just be prepared for any situation."

The weather can change.

“It can rain; it can be warm,” she said.

Glasgow said the fundraiser is a good way to reconnect with people who enjoy hiking.

“It’s kind of like a family. People who do this usually come back and it’s just a special event, it’s like a reunion almost every year,” she said about the participants and volunteer helpers. “We just love it.”

In the event itself, she said about 30 people volunteer, but volunteers work throughout the year to keep their section of trail open to everyone.

“It’s a labor of love for sure,” Glasgow said. "We do work so hard, I don’t know why, we just do it and we love it."
