Golf in Tunisia

Tunisia has a variety of golfing experiences to be enjoyed and there are three that get the Golf Escapes seal of approval.

The Sindbad Hotel & Citrus Golf

This is a brilliant place to start. The Sindbad hotel is located in Hammamet which is a lively town split into two parts – the “Old Town” and the “New Town”. Both areas have plenty of shops, restaurants, cafe’s and bars if you decide to venture out in your free time. The hotel itself is very charming and perfect for golf groups, with its own private beach along with some wonderful restaurants and bars onsite including a sports bar. The hotel is a shareholder in the Citrus Golf & Country Club and therefore the two have an excellent working relationship. The golf club is a 10 minute car journey from the Sindbad Hotel and there is a free shuttle that runs every 30 minutes between the venues. Citrus is a 45 hole golf complex with two excellent 18 holes courses, a 9 hole academy course, a large driving range and a beautiful clubhouse to relax in before and after your round.

The Residence Tunis

The Residence Tunis is a stunning 5 star hotel located 30 minutes from downtown Tunis in the tranquil region of Carthage. This a luxury beach resort on the Mediterranean sea complete with a Thalasso spa and a variety of dining choices. The hotel also owns a Robert Trent Jones Jr designed golf course which is just a few minutes by shuttle from the hotel reception. This is a very well designed desert style course that has views of Tunis and the mountains beyond. With great staff and food you might not want to leave this luxurious place but if you do venture out, there is the wonderfully idyllic village of Sidi Bou Said which we highly recommend visiting during your stay.

La Cigale Tarbarka

Situated in the northwest of Tunisia is the jewel in the crown of Tunisia golf tourism. La Cigale Tarbarka is owned by the Qatari royal family and is one of the most beautiful hotels you will find anywhere on the Mediterranean Sea. From the moment you arrive you know it is a special place with a grand entrance offering immediate views of the sea. The service and food here are first class and the hotel has been designed to maximise the views over the beach. To accompany this magnificent hotel there is a world class golf course. The front nine is draped over the cliffs above the beach with some very dramatic holes that will have perilous consequences for poor golf shots. The back nine then meanders its way back to the club house through the pines, finishing with a great par 4 that requires a very good approach shot over a large body of water. The clubhouse is a very pleasant place to relax and reflect on what will definitely have been an enjoyable round even if the scores might suggest otherwise.

Tunisia is the Northern-most country in Africa and is under 3.5 hours from all the major UK airports. There is a lovely climate for golf from March to June and September to December. It can get a little hot in the summer months but don’t let that put you off as the gentle breeze that blows off the Mediterranean helps cool even the very hottest days in the beach front resorts. Spring and Autumn offer the best temperatures and would be the ideal time for a golf holiday to Tunisia.

Golf in Tunisia is growing steadily with Hammamet being one of the best places to visit. Just 10 minutes outside Hammamet, you will find Citrus Golf, a 45 hole golf complex with two fantastic 18 hole layouts and an academy course which is great for pro groups. Other courses in Tunisia worth visiting would be The Residence in Tunis and La Cigale in Tarbarka, both of which are excellent resorts and are maintained to a very high standard.

If you have exhausted the better-known golf destinations of Spain, Portugal and Turkey then do consider Tunisia, the excellent value for money offered by our golf packages really does make a golf holiday in Tunisia a real bargain.

Golf Guide | Tunisia | Africa’s Golf Coast

The 19th hole is a little different in Tunisia.

Swap a beer or wine for mint tea and a “hookah” (arab smoking pipe) and you have a relaxing end to a day’s golf. This North African country is a great winter golf destination offering year round warm weather and a friendly welcome.

  • Five star luxury at four star prices
  • Golf in sight of camels and flamingo’s
  • Haggling in the Souk

Tunisia? North Africa? Golf?

tunisia golf tour

An unusual combination at first glance, but, dig a little deeper and you’ll find Tunisia has everything you need for a golf break in the sun.

This North African country, sandwiched between Algeria and Libya, is not among the world’s best known golf destinations but it boasts 10 courses and is reachable within a 3 hour flight from mainland Europe.

Tunisia has always been popular for mainstream tourism.

Camel Rides and Souks

The camel-rides, souks, sandy beaches and year-round sunshine have always attracted British, Scandinavians, Germans and Italians for affordable holidays.

In recent times, it’s golf the Tunisian Tourism authorities have been keen to promote.

tunisia golf tour

For golfers living in northern Europe, Tunisia is the ideal place for a winter golf break.

Playing golf amongst the camels and overlooking clear blue ocean provides a break from cold, windy and wet conditions or even courses closed because of snow.

Tunisian Tourism in Recovery

Today, tourism in Tunisia is recovering slowly following a decade of social upheaval and challenges to its international reputation as a safe place for travel.

The popular protests and social uprisings of the 2011 Arab Spring destabilized the country and its lucrative tourism industry suffered as holidaymakers stayed away and governments advised against travel to Tunisia.

In 2015, terror attacks at a Tunis Museum and a beach resort in Port El Kantaoui, near Sousse, claimed the lives of 60 people and many more were injured. The attacks were carried out by members of the self-styled Islamic State group.

These attacks decimated the tourism industry, which accounts for 1/6th of Tunisia’s GDP (gross domestic product).

  • The Foreign Office of the UK government still advises against travel to parts of Tunisia. Latest Travel Advice on Tunisia

The first time I visited Tunisia to play golf was in 2007, then I found teeing up in Tunisia to be as safe as visiting Portugal’s Algarve. The world changes quickly and porous borders with Libya and Algeria pose challenges for this small nation that has traditionally been more progressive and liberal than its larger neighbours.

French is a second language behind Arabic in Tunisia, for reasons colonial and historic, but English is widely spoken.

Among the minarets and Mosques of Tunisia, alcohol flows freely and people live in progressive tolerance, more European democracy than African dictatorship.

There are few differences between our society and theirs, bar the dinar – a closed currency which you can’t remove from the country – and their great penchant for haggling.

North Africa’s Golf Coast

Most of Tunisia’s 10 golf courses are situated by the Mediterranean in the popular Tourist resorts of Port El Kantaoui, Monastir and Hammamet.

You’re likely to fly into Tunis-Carthage Airport, and so if you’re spending a day or two in the Capital Tunis, why not visit the country’s oldest golf course, Golf de Carthage, at La Soukra.

Built in 1927, this is one of Africa’s oldest courses.

Today, it’s a little scruffy but still a charming place to enjoy a morning round.

The fairways wind between 100-year-old eucalyptus tree’s and olive groves and there is plenty of tree trouble.

A surprising feature of the club is that at night, the clubhouse bar doubles as a disco, complete with DJ and turntables playing the European dance music.

Port El Kantaoui – Rolls Royce of  golf in Tunisia

The two courses at Port El Kantaoui are more likely to attract the serious golfer.

Six miles north of Sousse, the country’s third largest city and a favourite of the British, Port El Kantaoui was built in 1979 and soon after saw the development of two 18-hole courses under American architect Ronald Fream.

The Panorama course is regarded as its Championship course while the Sea Course is a gentler alternative.

The European Tour used to make a regular stop in Tunisia with El Kantaoui as the preferred venue.

The club employs a rotation policy, allowing higher and lower handicaps to play a different course each day, speeding up play and sharing the quality holes fairly.

The Panorama is called that for a good reason.

It has the better views, like that from the elevated tee at the 555m 18 th hole, down towards the Meditteranean Sea, which could distract you from the drive over the Olive trees.

At Palm Links at Monastir, some 90-minutes from Hammamet, you’ll find Tunisia’s answer to links golf.

Close to Sousse, this reclaimed marshland is now a likeable quirky course set next to a racetrack.

Golf among wild Flamingos

Among its attractions are wild mounding, humps, bumps and a colony of wild flamingo’s, not to forget its signature hole, the par-four 14 th played alongside the ocean and guarded by waste bunkers.

The best golf though, is to be found at Golf Citrus at Hammamet, around an hour from Tunis.

This 36-hole golf complex was superbly run and its marshals had golfers hitting tee-times the way soldiers about turn on the drill square.

Its two courses, Les Oliviers and La Foret, are tough by any standards.

Next door to Citrus Golf is the Yasmine Golf Course, a gentler proposition with twin lakes and frequently tiered greens.

The Marshal here arrived in a buggy at the 9th and presented my playing partner and I with a flask of English Breakfast tea, and a selection of arab cakes, a demonstration of hospitality not unusual at Tunisia’s golf courses.

The warm welcome and hospitality makes up for the fact that the courses are not as well conditioned as those in Portugal or Spain. As the guests of an Arab host, they are extremely keen to ensure you have a pleasant stay in Tunisia. No matter how you’ve played, there’ll always be mint tea and the “Arab Hooka,” (smoking pipe) to wile away the hours at the 19 th .

Golf Holidays in Port El Kantaoui

Tunis/Carthage

It is difficult to call a capital city with two golf courses a ‘golf resort’ - and yet that can truly be said of Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. Tunis features one very old golf club - Carthage Golf Club which dates to the 1920’s and one very new one, the Robert Trent Jones II Residence Golf Club which opened in 2008. The adjacent Residence Hotel & Spa is truly one of the most luxurious hotels in the world, and a stay here will be remembered for many years to come. During your first visit, we recommend combining golf with a spa day so that you can experience the relaxation for yourself. In Tunis there are also numerous activities to enjoy, such as the ancient ruins of Carthage, and museums which trace the full history of Tunisia back to the days of the Phoenicians. Did you know that the Bible was officially canonized in Carthage? Or that Augustine, the famous church father and historian served as Bishop here? We especially recommend Tunis as a short break destination for those who want to experience The Residence Hotel . For those on a budget, the El Mouradi Gammarth Hotel is an economy friendly hotel that still provides luxurious touches for its guests. The modern capital city makes this a good base for a combined golf and business trip. The golf courses of Hammamet are only one hour away, and preferred tee times and transfers are available.

Port El Kantaoui/Sousse

Port El Kantaoui is a well developed resort and marina, with plenty to do at all hours day and night when you are not on the course. The 36 hole Kantaoui Golf Club has been a frequent host of the European Senior Tour, and is a short walk from our featured hotels. The marina offers a wide variety of excellent restaurants and other activities. Sailing, deep sea fishing, parasailing, jet skiing, and scuba diving to name just a few. British, Irish and German pubs are scattered between the marina and the adjacent town of Sousse. Port El Kantaoui is our first choice for golfers who want to literally walk to everything: Golf, hotel, marina and pubs are all within walking distance. The busiest resort centre for active winter holidays.

Hammamet is Tunisia’s most popular summer beach resort area. Three excellent golf courses are nearby, and four more less than one hour away. Yasmine Hammamet - an extension of the original resort - is Tunisia’s newest resort area, featuring many new 4 and 5 star hotels, a marina, several restaurants and a casino. The beach promenade, Carthage Land theme park, and nearby Afriquia animal and theme park offer plenty of activity when not playing golf. Hammamet is Tunisia’s best known golf resort, with many golfers coming several times per year.

Monastir/Skanes

Monastir-Skanes boasts a long stretch of white sandy beach, with two golf courses near the doorstep of most hotels, and two more a short distance away in Port El Kantaoui. Our featured hotels are directly facing the beach, and are either directly next to a golf course, or provide free transfers. This is the quietest golf resort area in Tunisia, and only a stone’s throw from Monastir International Airport. The towns of Monastir and Sousse are easily accessible by taxi or tourist trams/trains. Monastir features a quiet marina and some excellent Italian and seafood restaurants. Monastir is the preferred choice for those looking for good golf and a good nights rest rather than a late night out.

The First 45 Hole Golf Complex in Tunisia

tunisia golf tour

At the heart of the pine forest and a gently undulating olive grove, you will enjoy a wild and unspoilt nature which stretches over 173 hectares around palm trees, eucalyptus and seven judiciously located lakes.

Only a few minutes from the Bay of Hammamet, the sea breeze will make each round unique.

Created in 1992 and designed by the American architect Ronald Fream, the Citrus Golf Club offers two remarkable18-hole courses: Les Oliviers and La Forêt, whose principal quality is their technically rich course design.

Together, the courses boast 80 grassed hectares perfectly maintained throughout the year. It Also offers beautiful facilities, a driving range that can accommodate up to 120 people, 05 putting-greens, 05 chipping & pitching-greens and practice bunkers.

Hammamet, city with its timeless charm

Hammamet is a small city with an authentic charm. Turquoise waters, the scent of jasmine, white houses and stone walls gilded by the centuries… with its medina fringed by fine sand is particularly poetic.

In its wake, many celebrities will be familiar with the place, will stay or settle (Andre Gide, Giacometti, Bernanos, Paul Klee…) While the forests and lemon groves are a real pleasure for nature lovers, and from where the Golf Citrus Name was inspired..

Our Courses

La Forêt course has been voted Tunisia’s best Golf course in 2017 and 2018 by the World Golf Awards.

This demanding course, through hilly fairways, offers a rare environment with its subtle, complex and windy holes.

For an experienced golfer, it is a great challenge.

Senegal, Tunisia headline Sunday’s WCQ action

tunisia golf tour

Heavyweights Senegal and Tunisia will headline Sunday’s 2026 Fifa World Cup Qualifying action, which will see five fixtures played across the continent to kick-off Matchday 4 of the group stage.

Senegal, who are placed second in Group A, will back themselves to win away to Mauritania in Nouakchott and leapfrog leaders Sudan, who are only in action on Tuesday.

Teranga Lions star Sadio Mane – who missed last week’s 1-1 draw with DR Congo and is also out for the trip to Mauritania – has urged coach Aliou Cisse to get his tactics right.

“To be formidable, we must review our system,” said the former Liverpool forward. “I think we need to see him again because we tried to play several combinations and it didn’t work.”

Elsewhere in Group A, DR Congo and Togo will both be looking to boost their chances when they meet at Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa.

Tunisia will have the chance to take firm control of Group H when they face Namibia in Johannesburg. The Carthage Eagles boast a 100 per cent record thus far and enjoy a two-point lead over the Brave Warriors, who are placed second on the standings after a strong start to their qualification campaign.

Namibia stuttered somewhat this past midweek with a 1-1 draw at home to Liberia, but coach Collin Benjamin is urging patience, as his young team continues to learn on the international stage.

“I think we started off very well. I mean, if we can go into into the lead in the eighth minute, we normally have it under control. We should have it under control. But you could see that the inexperience actually cost us,” Benjamin explained.

“We’re going to give them [players] the time. And the nation just has to be a bit patient with them. They’re going to come to the level where their seniors are now.”

On the challenge of facing Tunisia, Benjamin added: “We’re going to have to prepare properly. We’re going to have to see that the regeneration process now goes as fast as possible, so that we can actually come out with more energy, with more conviction, with more willpower to try and beat the challenge that’s waiting for us on Sunday.”

Group H will also feature a clash between Sao Tome & Principe in Oujda, while Ethiopia will look to climb the Group A log when they tackle Djibouti in El Jadida. A win for the Walia Ibex would push them level with second-placed Guinea-Bissau, ahead of the clash between the Djuruts and log-leaders Egypt on Monday.

CAF World Cup Qualifying fixtures, Sunday 9 June

15:00: Sao Tome & Principe v Liberia

18:00: Djibouti v Ethiopia

18:00: DR Congo v Togo

18:00: Mauritania v Senegal

Analysis: A year after PGA Tour's surprise deal with Saudis, still no clarity on where golf is going

One year after the PGA Tour announced a proposed deal with the backers of LIV Golf, there still aren't many answers about where golf is headed and how to repair the fractured landscape with great players on two tours

DUBLIN, Ohio -- PGA champion Xander Schauffele was on the 10th tee at Muirfield Village for a late Monday afternoon practice round to start the week of the Memorial. Just the sight of him was enough to bring back memories of golf then and now.

So much has changed. So little is known. And there's still no clarity where golf is headed and how to repair such a splintered sport created by Saudi money and a secret deal .

It was a year ago at the Memorial that Schauffele was playing nine holes of the Wednesday pro-am, starting on the 10th tee. Two of his amateur partners that day were PGA Tour board members — Ed Herlihy, the board chairman, and Jimmy Dunne.

Unbeknownst to Schauffele — unbeknownst to every PGA Tour player — was that Dunne and Herlihy, along with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, had been secretly meeting with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia , the financial backers of the rival LIV Golf circuit that already had lured away some of golf's biggest names with guaranteed riches.

The pro-am was on May 31. The famous “framework agreement" for a commercial deal among the PGA Tour, PIF and the European tour had been signed on May 30.

Most curious was when Herlihy saw a familiar face and suggested a phone call in the near future because “we have a lot of good things coming.”

It wasn't until six days later that Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor, appeared on CNBC to announce that former enemies were now in business together . It remains one of the most stunning developments in golf — not just making the deal with the Saudis, but keeping the entire membership (and the majority of the PGA Tour board) in the dark.

That was June 6, 2023. It's rare in golf for anything to be identified by a date.

Monahan flew from New York to the Canadian Open for a player meeting later that day and was blistered by players who wanted answers.

A year later, does anyone have them?

For all the moving parts — and there have been plenty — what often gets overlooked is one important aspect to the framework agreement. While it was never finalized by the end of 2023, the stated deadline, it did away with the antitrust lawsuit by PIF-funded LIV and the countersuit by the PGA Tour. The tour already was said to have spent close to $50 million in legal fees.

The rest of the road forward has trudged uphill (still no commercial deal with PIF).

And it has moved quickly and quirkily.

Tiger Woods was appointed to the board with no term limits. Rory McIlroy resigned from the board and then was put back into play as a non-voting member of a negotiating committee , but only after a failed attempt for him to replace Webb Simpson .

From the business side, Randall Stephenson of AT & T resigned from the board abruptly last summer over the proposed deal with the Saudis. In the last month alone, Dunne and board member Mark Flaherty resigned.

It's a lot easier to keep track of birdies and bogeys.

There were two Senate hearings. The agreement got the attention of the Justice Department, which led to both sides in July doing away with an anti-poaching clause in the agreement. Four months later, Jon Rahm was on his way to LIV .

The new for-profit company known as PGA Tour Enterprises received interest from private equity, and the tour narrowed its list of suitors to Strategic Sports Group by the end of the year. SSG, a group of North American pro sports owners led by Fenway Sports Group, announced a $1.5 billion investment that could be twice that much.

The tour is still negotiating for PIF to become a minority investor, but it took until March before players on the PGA Tour Enterprises board even met with Al-Rumayyan .

Jordan Spieth is on the board. He replaced McIlroy, who resigned in November. Spieth said two weeks ago that any suggestions that negotiations are “in a bad place and are moving slowly” are not true.

“I think ultimately we’ll end up in a place where professional golf is maybe the best that it’s ever been. I think both sides believe that,” he said at Colonial.

Still no details. No clear road map.

It was Spieth who said in late January that with SSG as an investor, he didn't think a deal was needed with PIF except for unification in the sport. That put him at odds with McIlroy, who wants desperately for golf's best players to be brought back together more than four times a year at the majors.

There even is friction inside the PGA Tour — lingering bad feelings toward Monahan for going behind the players’ backs, and even which players were worth how much under a first-of-its-kind program that distributed $930 million in equity shares .

Perhaps the biggest change from a year ago is players now have a majority voice on the board. The argument has always been that while it's their tour, the players are more skilled with a 4-iron than running a business valued to be worth upward of $10 billion.

But the bigger question is what exactly do they want? Where is golf headed, and how does it get put back together?

Schauffele made the biggest putt of his life to win the PGA Championship by one shot over Bryson DeChambeau, who reminded golf fans what they've been missing. He's an entertainer. Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship last year and was put on the Ryder Cup team with 11 players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour.

Koepka, DeChambeau, Rahm, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson are still only available to watch on CW, the app or the network.

They are in Houston this week if anyone was wondering.

PGA Tour reports ‘progress’ in talks with Saudi wealth fund leaders

June 8, 2024 at 7:30 p.m.

by DOUG FERGUSON / The Associated Press

AP photo by Sue Ogrocki / Rory McIlroy gestures after putting on the 17th green during the first round of the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament on Thursday in Dublin, Ohio.

The PGA Tour reported progress without details from a face-to-face meeting between its negotiating committee and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia as it tries to work toward a deal.

"We want to get this right, and we are approaching discussions with careful consideration for our players, our fans, our partners and the game's future," the PGA Tour said in a written statement released Saturday morning.

The meeting in New York on Friday evening involved the "transaction committee" of PGA Tour Enterprises and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund that pays for the rival LIV Golf League.

PGA Tour player Rory McIlroy is on the committee and said he was encouraged by the progress. The four-time major winner from Northern Ireland referred to the three-hour meeting, which took part in via video call, as "very productive, very constructive, very collaborative."

"Definitely things are heading in the right direction," McIlroy said after the third round of the Memorial Tournament on Saturday in Dublin, Ohio. "A lot of progress was made. I can't really say much more than that, but it was really positive."

PGA Tour Enterprises is the commercial group that came out of the framework agreement announced a year ago among the PGA Tour, PIF and the Europe-based DP World Tour.

PGA Tour Enterprises brought on Strategic Sports Group, which invested an initial $1.5 billion earlier this year. Negotiations are ongoing to bring in PIF as a minority investor, and there has been more activity than previously believed.

McIlroy, who joined fellow players Tiger Woods and Adam Scott on the transaction committee, said it has been meeting with PIF representatives every Monday, Wednesday and Friday over the past couple of weeks. The tour referred to negotiations as "accelerated" in recent months.

Friday's meeting was the first in-person discussion since players and board members met with Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas the day after The Players Championship in March.

The tour said the committee and PIF have been meeting "multiple times weekly to work through potential deal terms and come to a shared vision on the future of professional golf." It said only that "more progress was made" in New York.

"We remain committed to these negotiations, which require working through complex considerations to best position golf for global growth," the tour said.

McIlroy said those multiple meetings are more about financials, such as the investment possibilities of PIF and SSG.

"But I think last night was more talking about the future of the game and the vision, and that was where I thought there was a lot of progress that was made," he said.

Woods and Scott are on the full PGA Tour Enterprises board, along with player-directors Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnatii, Webb Simpson and Jordan Spieth.

McIlroy resigned from the PGA Tour board last November, and there was an unsuccessful attempt by Simpson to have McIlroy replace him. McIlroy, the strongest voice who has gone from heavy criticism of LIV to being more willing to compromise, is part of the transaction committee and ultimately does not have a vote.

However, he has relationships with both sides of the table. McIlroy had said he would be more in listen mode when the business leaders — Al-Rumayyan and his team at PIF, a PGA Tour Enterprises committee that includes four SSG investors — sorted through details.

"We're there to maybe give a perspective from player's point of view," McIlroy said Thursday. "But, I mean, this is a negotiation about an investment into PGA Tour Enterprises. This is big boy stuff, and I'll certainly be doing more listening than I will be talking."

He said Saturday he did weigh in on occasion during his video call Friday: "The mute button was turned off a couple of times to chime in."

Analysis: A year after PGA Tour’s surprise deal with Saudis, still no clarity on where golf is going

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — PGA champion Xander Schauffele was on the 10th tee at Muirfield Village for a late Monday afternoon practice round to start the week of the Memorial. Just the sight of him was enough to bring back memories of golf then and now.

So much has changed. So little is known. And there’s still no clarity where golf is headed and how to repair such a splintered sport created by Saudi money and a secret deal .

It was a year ago at the Memorial that Schauffele was playing nine holes of the Wednesday pro-am, starting on the 10th tee. Two of his amateur partners that day were PGA Tour board members — Ed Herlihy, the board chairman, and Jimmy Dunne.

Unbeknownst to Schauffele — unbeknownst to every PGA Tour player — was that Dunne and Herlihy, along with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, had been secretly meeting with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia , the financial backers of the rival LIV Golf circuit that already had lured away some of golf’s biggest names with guaranteed riches.

The pro-am was on May 31. The famous “framework agreement” for a commercial deal among the PGA Tour, PIF and the European tour had been signed on May 30.

FILE - Nick Dunlap reacts after making his putt on the 18th hole of the Pete Dye Stadium Course during the final round to win the American Express golf tournament, Jan. 21, 2024, in La Quinta, Calif. Dunlap had his spot secured at Pinehurst No. 2 for the U.S. Open last summer when he won the U.S. Amateur. But he’s no longer an amateur, left little choice but to turn pro when he won on the PGA Tour in January. It hasn’t been the smoothest ride since that point. (AP Photo/Ryan Sun, file)

Most curious was when Herlihy saw a familiar face and suggested a phone call in the near future because “we have a lot of good things coming.”

It wasn’t until six days later that Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the PIF governor, appeared on CNBC to announce that former enemies were now in business together . It remains one of the most stunning developments in golf — not just making the deal with the Saudis, but keeping the entire membership (and the majority of the PGA Tour board) in the dark.

That was June 6, 2023. It’s rare in golf for anything to be identified by a date.

From the business side, Randall Stephenson of AT&T resigned from the board abruptly last summer over the proposed deal with the Saudis. In the last month alone, Dunne and board member Mark Flaherty resigned.

It’s a lot easier to keep track of birdies and bogeys.

It was Spieth who said in late January that with SSG as an investor, he didn’t think a deal was needed with PIF except for unification in the sport. That put him at odds with McIlroy, who wants desperately for golf’s best players to be brought back together more than four times a year at the majors.
