A guided tour of the Copenhagen Opera House
The tour is indoors and can be made all year round. Our writer was lucky enough that her tour fell on a sunny day. Do not miss out on seeing the Copenhagen Opera House while you live in Denmark, with or without a performance.
The article continues below.
By Lisa White Pictures: Bente D. Knudsen, Lisa White
On a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Copenhagen Opera House, located on the island of Holmen, it’s just as bright indoors as outdoors.
It appears as you enter the architectural masterpiece that it sparkles, literally sparkles. First impressions are everything and this place exceeds expectations of any Opera House.
The three identical steel spiral chandeliers, overlaid in colour filtered glass arranged in faceted diamond patterns, immediately catch your attention as you enter. Designed by Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, the chandeliers offer an upward view of a luminous star light skyline with balconies and catwalks visible from all angles. The space is airy as well as inviting.
In the open air 42-meter-high foyer a group of approximately 30 of us wait for the hour and half tour to begin. Those of us who speak English are led by our tour guide Anders Skisbsted, a musician working at the opera. Anders begins the tour by telling us about what inspired the making of the Opera House back in the late 1990s.
The $442 million building, 41,000 square metered space was at the time (of its building) marked by an important controversy between the architect, renowned Henning Larsen, and the owner of the conglomerate business company A.P. Møller, Mr. Mærsk McKinney Møller; they disagreed immensely over the outer design of the building.
As it was the shipping mogul’s foundation, the A.P. Møller foundation, which funded the project and presented it as a gift to the citizens of Denmark, the foundation (and its owner) ultimately had the final say as to how the finished Opera House would be designed.
So much so, that on the highly anticipated red-carpet debut on a cold winter day in January 2005, the opening did not, unfortunately, come with the blessings of Architect Henning Larsen.
Equally impressive as the chandeliers, is the Danish maple wood shelling which encases the upper part of the House; polished and shined to look like a wooded string instrument. Underneath the green wall mimics the colour of the harbour water.
Experiencing all this creativity in the foyer alone is most delightful.
Inside the theatre, the 1,468 blue velour seats, the colour of water, are not your typical opera house red but match well with the water surrounding the building outside.
With five interchangeable stages and a beautiful orchestra pit, the house is built for momentous performances. The ceiling is made of 24 gold leaf which was meticulously glued on by hand.
The tour included also backstage access where stage technical and creative professionals were busy preparing for the upcoming performance. The behind the scenes structure also houses a 200-seat black box room, a theatre room, an education room, and an orchestral rehearsal rubber insulated room on the first floor of the underground locations.
A tour of the Copenhagen Opera House made a delightful afternoon learning about not only the building itself but the history of the oldest royal orchestra in Europe.
A recommended adventure for anyone doing the Danish Life experience.
Tours in English take place only during the weekend, Danish tours also on weekdays. Price: DKK 120. Find the tour calendar here:

The Royal Danish Opera House
The Opera House in Copenhagen is a very new and modern opera house, and one of the best-equipped in the world
The opera is from 2005, and the size of the house is a total of 41,000 square meters, and five of the fourteen storeys are subterranean. The main stage of the opera seats an audience of 1400.
The Opera House is clad with southern German Jura Gelb limestone, and the foyer features Sicilian Perlatino marble. The wall of the auditorium facing the foyer is clad with maple wood, and the ceiling in the main auditorium is adorned with 105,000 sheets of 24-carat gold leaf, equivalent to 1.5 kilos of gold. Danish architect Henning Larsen designed the Royal Opera House, and several Danish artists have contributed to the decor just her to mention Per Kirkeby, who created four bronze reliefs, and Olafur Eliasson has contributed the three light sculptures for the foyer.
A donation from A.P. Møller
The new Danish Royal Opera House was a donation from the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kenney Møller Foundation to the Danish state in August 2000.
The Opera House is one of the most expensive opera houses ever built. In the year 2000, it cost 2,3 billion kroner til built, and it is beautifully situated at the harbour just across from the royal residence, Amalienborg Palace, and nearby the headquarter of the Mærsk company, which the donator was the co-founder.

Copenhagen Opera Festival's popular Showboat is setting sail once again with high spirits and vocal performances—this time with a veritable treasure trove of charming rarities and famous hits from the seven seas of theatre, film, and popular music.
Showboat 2024: Ahoy, Pirates, On to the Seas!
Hop aboard if you dare. The same rocking rhythm and contagious atmosphere with a new musical course: Showboat 2024 will be hijacked by two pirates singing their lungs out alongside their splendid pianist. Soprano Anna Vaupel and tenor Jonathan von Schwanenflügel walk the plank with grand emotions and cheerful tones, from sentimental Italian opera to works by Gilbert & Sullivan, Bellini, Kurt Weill, and Cole Porter, while Tony Tuan-Anh Nguyen keeps spirits high on the keys.
The classic feature of the festival is created by the opera singer and director Simon Duus, and on top of enjoying the entertainment on board, new and returning passengers alike can look forward to wind in their hair, foam spray, and an enchanting view of the unruly waves on the canals. Who knows, maybe the Showboat will set sail for the South Sea Islands... and perhaps it'll all get a little out of hand?
The show will be in Danish and the tour is sailed in an open boat no matter the weather.
It is possible to buy beverages on the quay before the tour.

The The Announce Tour and First Album in 24 Years, Share Song: Listen
The The are back with Ensoulment , their first album since 2000. The Matt Johnson–led band will hit the road, too, traversing North America in the autumn, between dates in Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. Below, find the dates and listen to “ Cognitive Dissident ,” from the LP. The album arrives September 6 (via Cinéola/ EarMusic ).
Back in 2017, Johnson reformed the The to release the Johnny Marr –featuring “You Can’t Stop What’s Coming,” which was then their first new music in 15 years. A box set and tour followed that year, including new recordings of old songs, though Ensoulment is the band’s formal follow-up to NakedSelf . Johnson primarily worked with his old bandmates James Eller, DC Collard, Earl Harvin, and Barrie Cadogan, alongside co-producer and engineer Warne Livesey.
