Nuna Triv Next review: Cleverly compact with compromises

  • Chris Martin

nuna triv next travel system

The Nuna Triv Next is a Goldilocks pushchair that will be a happy medium for many

  • Large rear wheels with suspension
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Stylish and well made
  • Awkward front wheel locks
  • Precarious when folded
  • Tricky to unfold

Nuna is on a roll when it comes to updating its range of pushchairs, and the latest model to get the treatment is the Triv Next.

This is Nuna’s mid-range, lightweight option at 8.72kg (without insert and armbar) and, although it might look very similar to the original, the Next brings with it a range of upgrades, including one of the quickest and easiest fold-downs you’ve ever seen.

The mechanism, while clever, isn’t without its foibles. However, features such as bigger rear wheels, improved suspension, a “one-touch” braking system and more clever innovations make life easier.

Dubbed the “everyday travel companion”, our testing reveals that Nuna’s claim largely rings true, with the brand once again offering good value for money in a product that brings a balance in terms of price, build quality and features.

There are both cheaper and more expensive pushchairs available in Nuna’s range, but the Triv Next will be a just-right Goldilocks purchase for many parents.

Nuna Triv Next review: What you need to know

Thanks to the full-recline seat, the Triv Next is suitable from birth to 22kg, meaning you should get around four years of use out of it. Also making it possible to use for newborns is the removable insert made from Merino wool and “Tencel” lyocell, which will prove soft and comfortable for your baby. The seat has four recline positions, as well as adjustable calf support and a spring suspension.

Furthermore, the Next is compatible with the Triv-series carry cot and Nuna car seats. The included adapter posts make fixing these items simple, and are handily attached to each other via a strap that keeps them together when the pushchair’s clever fold-down mechanism is enabled.

You can face the seat in both directions, with two simple buttons making it easy to make the switch in mere seconds. The pram does fold down with the seat in either orientation, but forward facing makes for a much neater and more compact solution.

Other useful features of the Triv Next include the five-point harness. This attaches effortlessly via two magnetic clips, and undoes with a single button, minimising the amount of faffing around when positioning your baby in and out of the pushchair.

As mentioned, the seat has four recline positions, while the handle offers five positions. There are also zipped storage pockets, air vents and a decent-sized shopping basket, and the adjustable canopy is both water-repellent and UPF 50+ to guard against ultraviolet rays.

The  detachable armbar (which doesn’t need to be removed before folding down the Triv Next) features a stylish leatherette coating that arrives in either tan or black, to match the handle.

The Triv Next is available in the classic Caviar colour (black), as well as four other options: Ocean, Hazelwood, Rose and the more expensive Rainbow. The first two are similar but the other models arrive with contrasting-coloured canopies, inserts or even the shopping basket underneath.

Nuna Triv Next review: Price and competition

The Triv Next costs £600, unless you opt for the Rainbow colour, which comes in at £650. This is only £10 short of the Nuna Mixx Next , should you be considering Nuna’s larger model. However, it’s worth noting that £600 is the same starting price as the previous Triv model.

As you’d expect, the price includes accessories such as a rain cover and adapter to attach the Triv-series carry cot as well as Nuna car seats. Bundles are available from £950 for a travel system.

Nuna Triv Next - angle1

It might not be dramatically cheaper than the Mixx Next, then, but compared to most rivals the Triv Next is excellent value. For example, the Mamas & Papas Ocarro costs £849 , while the Bugaboo Cameleon 3 is priced at £695 .

However, you can spend less on alternatives such as the £370 Joie Chrome DLX and Babyzen’s YoYo² , which comes in at £450, albeit without the large rear wheels.

Nuna Triv Next review: Performance

Pushchairs of this size and weight don’t typically arrive with any standout design features that will see them able to tackle much more than smooth pavement. However, the Triv Next – like the Mixx Next – comes with a set of larger wheels at the rear, although they’re not as big in comparison.

The larger wheels are foam-filled, with all four (quickly removable) benefitting from suspension. Not to the degree of the Mixx Next, but it at least means the Triv Next can handle challenging terrain. Through the woods or along a rough gravel path the Next will be fine,  although uneven ground with long grass proved a bit of a struggle.

As long as the terrain isn’t too rough, however, the performance of the Triv Next is very good. It’s just as smooth as the Mixx Next on tarmac, with no noises from the frame whatsoever.

Nuna Triv Next review: Design and key features

As you might have gathered, the Triv Next’s one-handed collapsible design is one of its headline features. It enables you to quickly fold down the pushchair for storage simply by lifting it off the ground via the strap.

Folding literally takes a second, and is quite a sight to behold – almost like some sort of magic trick. However, while the main action of getting the Triv Next packed away couldn’t be easier, there are a few things you need to do first to ensure it can stand on its own.

Nuna Triv Next - side2

First, the handlebar needs to be in its lowest position. The handle is one part of the pushchair that makes contact with the floor, hence the small plastic section in the middle. If it’s extended at all, the pushchair will be off-balance.

You also need to lock the front wheels in the correct position (as if you’re reversing), but note that the switch to do this is a little awkward to reach. Like the handle bar, if the wheels are loose or facing the wrong way, then the Triv Next won’t stand up properly. In fact, it will fall over. The final element is to move the seat back into a folded position, which is easy using the single button on the back.

Remember to do these things first – which is easier said than done, in our experience – and the Triv Next will be a dream to fold down one-handed, even while holding your child with the other arm. However, even with everything in the right place, the Triv Next feels somewhat precarious, balancing between the two front wheels and the plastic bumper of the handle bar. It’s a little too easy to knock over in a hallway.

Nuna Triv Next - folded

It’s also a little tricky to unfold, needing to be lifted off the ground from the handle in a particular way to allow everything to unfold correctly. This is difficult to master.

Back on the positive side, the “one-touch” brake is super quick and easy to use. Instead of a rocker switch, it’s more like a pedal in a car; you simply push it down to activate or deactivate the brake.

Nuna Triv Next review: Verdict

Nuna has good form when it comes to its pushchairs striking a great balance when it comes to price, performance and features – and the Triv Next is no exception. It’s far more premium than you might expect for the price and arrives with many of the same great features as the bigger and heavier Mixx Next.

It’s cheaper than various rival models, yet offers a lightweight and compact solution that’s suitable for both urban and off-road situations. This is mainly thanks to its larger rear wheels and suspension, which certainly aren’t a given on this type of pushchair.

Build quality is top-notch, there are a range of colour options available, and with compatibility with Nuna’s carrycot and car seat, the Triv Next can become a travel system.

Note that its party trick of folding down with a simple lift of one strap is brilliant, although it comes with some downsides, too: the wheels and handle need to be in the correct position, and the pushchair can still feel precariously balanced once in its folded-down state. Nevertheless, the Nuna Triv Next remains an excellent all-rounder that ticks many boxes at an affordable price.

Nuna Travel System Review: From One Urban Parent (To-Be) to Another, Consider Your Stroller Search Over

Choosing a stroller and a carseat as a parent-to-be is a freaking mission. No joke, I think I could write an entire thesis paper on the options for infants and how to select the right one for your lifestyle. As a mom-to-be via adoption, I have spent a little way too much time researching this stuff. After all, in the waiting period of adoption (and I would imagine pregnancy as well), there’s not much else to do. So about a month ago after extensive research I finally decided to take the plunge with Nuna Baby’s PIPA urbn + TRIV next travel system ($1,100) — and quickly found out why the word on the street was that it was the best in its class.

  • Car seat is extremely lightweight (7 lbs)
  • No base needed, making it easy to install the infant car seat in any car
  • The entire travel system has a minimalistic, modern look
  • The TRIV Next folds up nice and compact for small spaces
  • Safety is always top of mind

We don't like

  • The TRIV Next stroller does not convert into a double for multiple children
  • Price point is unmistakably high
  • The PIPA Urbn car seat must be purchased with a travel system, it's not a standalone product

PIPA urbn + TRIV next Travel System

The nuna kid on the block.

Though the brand has technically been around since 2007, it feels like Nuna has been gaining some serious traction with parents (and parents-to-be) around me lately. Inspired by the “ingenuity of Dutch design,” Nuna believes in excellent craftsmanship, clean lines, and thoughtful solutions in each of their products, which run the entire baby and child gamut. From strollers to car seats to swings, Nuna is a one-stop shop for parents searching for high-performing, safe gear for their kids.

From a safety perspective, Nuna believes in going beyond the world’s minimum standards for safety. To ensure the safety of all of the kiddos and future kiddos that will live in the gear, the brand invests in testing the gear at independent, accredited labs. Beyond this, they use high-quality materials that abide by CPSIA standards (for the US) and EACH and EN71 standards in Europe .

Safety, design, and quality were really important to me in my search for a stroller and car seat, but perhaps one of the things I desired the most was the stamp of approval of parents who have gone before me. Nuna’s gear is designed by parents — meaning they actually get the needs of new parents like me. Beyond this, they try to accommodate different environments and lifestyles with a variety of products, which I really appreciate.

‍ 2-Second, Base-Free Install

In my research of car seats and strollers, I surveyed a few parents and scoured the Internet. I learned that many car seats are compatible with a bunch of different strollers from other brands, meaning you can really mix and match here. Personally, I am so Type A it hurts; for my sanity, I needed my stroller and infant car seat to match. Not only that, I just really had no interest in paying $50+ for an adapter to a car seat I was going to use for only five or six months. All of this led me to looking at Nuna’s travel systems , which are a combination of an infant car seat (for babies anywhere from 4-22 lbs), a “regular” stroller seat (for children up to 50 lbs), and the stroller itself.

I live near downtown Detroit, meaning we take a lot of Ubers and switch around cars a lot. This made Nuna’s baseless car seat (meaning there's no base needed in the vehicle), the PIPA urbn , really appealing to me. How sweet, I thought, that our baby could easily go with us to dinner via Uber and then the next day hop in Grandma’s car without all the fuss of reinstalling or carrying around a base. Sure, I could buy every grandma and grandpa a base, but that gets pricey, and I liked the simplicity the PIPA urbn infant car seat offered. Beyond being easy to get in and out of cars easily, the car seat is just 7 pounds, which in the car seat world, is ultralight.

Our journey to becoming parents is strange, in the sense we could get a call to come get a baby at any point now! No joke, we might only have a few hours' notice that we’re becoming parents. With that in mind, we quickly got to installing the car seat in the car once it arrived. Unpacking was super easy and everything was so nicely pre-assembled. We took the carseat out to the car and, within seconds, installed it using the steel-reinforced rigid latch installation. I thought “2-second install” had to be an exaggeration — until I did it. Sure, I didn’t have a crying baby inside to deal with, but it is actually as simple as pushing it into the metal bars in your car and leveling it.

Getting it out, at first, proved to be a little trickier. It took a second for us to find the latch to remove the seat from the metal bars, but once we did, it was also very simple and quick. Another favorite feature of mine is the magnetic clip holders on the sides of the car seat. With my niece, I have learned that I am so awful at strapping babies into car seats because the straps go everywhere; not with this car seat! It also comes with a “Sky Drape” to shield the baby from the sun and create more privacy, plus it's also built-in so there’s no chance you can lose it.

They See Me Rollin’…

The PIPA Urbn is not sold separately from the TRIV next, which at first worried me. It is a big price tag after all, coming in at $1,100. That being said, it does fall in the luxury stroller category and might make for a great “group gift” on your registry. Paired with the TRIV Next Stroller System , this means you’re purchasing a stroller that’ll support your baby while they’re in the infant car seat (4-22 lbs), as well as up to 50 lbs within a “normal” stroller configuration.

The TRIV next fulfilled all of our criteria, from lasting for multiple children in different stages to looking modern (no '90s baby gear for me, please.) At just 18.4 lbs pounds (without insert, arm bar, or canopy) , the stroller is incredibly lightweight and folds up with just a one-handed pull, no matter which of the 4 configurations you have it in. It stands up on its own when folded (ours is tucked away well in our mudroom) and feels pretty durable to the touch. Beyond that, it is easily adjustable for height, has an easy braking system, and per my husband’s request, all-wheel suspension and large rear wheels that “promise easy maneuverability through varied terrain.” Stay tuned on that one to see what types of terrain my man takes our future babes on *nervous laughter.*

Without a baby in tow yet, we took this puppy around the neighborhood for a test drive. I know that sounds weird, but it was not only to get a good feel for it, but also to help train our puppy dogs to respect the stroller. Overall, it was quite a successful mission – all two humans and two pups approved of our new style of family walks. I think it’ll adapt nicely to our park strolls once our sweet baby is with us!

The Premier Stroller for City ‘Rents

As an urban parent (to be), I’m stoked about our future with this stroller. While we’re excited to soak in baby snuggles, we don’t plan to slow our lives down a whole lot on account of this baby. So iIf you’re looking for a travel system that’s going to keep up with your busy life, consider your search over. The Nuna is it.

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Nuna's most compact full-featured stroller is getting a facelift - the new Nuna TRIV Next  retains everything parents loved about the TRIV, while getting upgraded features from the seat to the frame for the most comfortable, everyday stroller.

Without an increase in price, the $699.95 TRIV Next is lighter weight yet with larger tires and a modernized frame that maneuvers even more smoothly than before.

What exactly is different about the TRIV Next, and how did prior TRIV models compare?

This post compares the TRIV Next with the 2021 TRIV models with magnetic harness buckles.

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Nuna TRIV Next Video

Watch the video below for a detailed review of the TRIV Next , including comparisons with the 2021 TRIV model.

Nuna TRIV Next

The   TRIV Next  is Nuna's most compact stroller to date—weighing less than 20 pounds, or just 14.6 pounds when using only the frame and car seat.

You'll only need one hand to fold the TRIV or to quickly attach a Nuna infant car seat using the included ring adapter (which folds in half, too).

The TRIV offers comfort features like an adjustable footrest and handlebar, a three-position recline, and a breathable merino wool insert that can be removed to reveal a mesh seat back. An extendable, UPF 50+ sun canopy zips off and has built-in mesh ventilation plus a peekaboo window.

Nuna TRIV vs. Nuna TRIV Next Price

No changes have been made to the TRIV stroller's price, continuing at $699.95 for the  Nuna TRIV Next .

  • 2021 Nuna TRIV : $699.95
  • Nuna TRIV Next : $699.95

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Nuna TRIV vs. Nuna TRIV Next Weight and Dimensions

In spite of its larger rear tires and widened frame, the Nuna TRIV Next manages to weigh one pound lighter than its predecessor the TRIV.

Because of the wider wheel base and larger rear tires, the TRIV Next is 2.5" wider than the TRIV. However, once folded the TRIV Next measures a little over 10% smaller than the TRIV, with a slender profile when folded that is easier to stand upright and stow out of the way.

Stroller Weight

Please note Nuna measures the product weights without select components of the stroller, in this case without the seat insert, canopy, or bumper bar:

  • TRIV: 19.4 pounds
  • TRIV Next: 18.5 pounds

Weight Capacity

  • TRIV: 50 pounds
  • TRIV Next: 50 pounds
  • TRIV: 30.5-34.5"L x 20"W x 42-43.5"H
  • TRIV Next: 37"L x 22.5"W x 42-43.5"H

Folded Dimensions

  • TRIV: 25.3"L x 21"W x 17.5"H
  • TRIV Next: 24"L x 22.5"W x 15"H

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Nuna TRIV vs. Nuna TRIV Next Wheels and Maneuverability

One of the most significant changes made to the TRIV Next is its frame design and wheel size to improve maneuverability and handling on and off pavement.

The original TRIV, including updated versions in 2021 with magnetic harness buckles, all had relatively small wheels (around 7" in diameter for all four tires) and a frame that narrowed and curved inwards at the back. Although stable, strollers with a frame that is narrow in back and wide in the front may feel less easy to control or turn on some surfaces.

With the TRIV Next, Nuna widened the rear wheel base for an ultra-stable feel, and made the rear tires around 2" larger at 9" in diameter while keeping the all-wheel suspension and under seat spring suspension of previous models.

The resulting design makes the TRIV Next an all terrain stroller that's ready for the city and some light trails in the park. While it doesn't compare to the extra large tires and responsive suspension seen on the MIXX Next and DEMI Grow , the TRIV Next is a serious contender for parents who prefer a lighter weight stroller but need something that can comfortably handle those every day adventures.

Both strollers are built with durable, foam-filled rubber wheels.

  • TRIV: 7" front wheels, 7.5" rear wheels
  • TRIV Next: 7" front wheels, 9" rear wheels

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Nuna TRIV vs. Nuna TRIV Next Seat Features

Both the TRIV and TRIV Next include removable seat inserts made of a breathable, merino wool blend that's temperature regulating, backed by a mesh back window to provide air flow.

Nuna released an updated TRIV in 2021 with the MagneTech magnetic harness buckle, which has continued into the TRIV Next with a slight modification. The original TRIV MagneTech buckle had a round shape that was relatively easy to use, but the TRIV Next buckle has a more ergonomic shape that fits easily in parents hands to release and clip in place with little effort.

As your child grows, the 5 point harness can be modified to a 3 point harness as needed by slipping the shoulder strap loop off of the magnetic clips.

While the canopy height is not adjustable for either the TRIV or TRIV Next, the TRIV Next canopy is designed to easily zip off from the seat to make space for tall toddlers or to make it easier to clean and maintain the canopy fabrics. Just release the canopy wires at the right and left side of the canopy (release button is highlighted by a circle of stitching) and unzip in one motion to remove the TRIV Next canopy.

Plus, although not technically a part of the seat, a new footrest is built into the front of the TRIV Next frame to provide an extension of the calf support as your child grows.

The overall size and shape of the TRIV and TRIV Next seats are virtually identical.

  • TRIV and TRIV Next: 21" from seat to canopy, 17" from seat to footrest

Seat Height

  • TRIV and TRIV Next: 20" from floor to seat

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Nuna TRIV Next vs. Nuna TRIV Next   Brake

The original Nuna TRIV brake was designed to step on to lock, then flip up from underneath to release. While easy to use, this style of brake is less comfortable for parents wearing open-toe shoes, and might   scuff certain shoe finishes.

A handy update to the TRIV Next is a flip-flop-friendly brake that lets you step on to lock, but also step on to release.

Nuna TRIV Next vs. Nuna TRIV Next  Handlebar

In addition to frame changes like a built-in footrest and wider wheel base, the TRIV Next also sees an update to the handlebar itself.

The original TRIV handlebar is curved in a flattened, oval shape. To improve the handlebar's comfort, Nuna designed the TRIV Next with a rounded, comfortable to grip handle shape that is more ergonomic for all-day outings.

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

How to Fold Nuna TRIV and Nuna TRIV Next

Nuna has made no changes to the TRIV fold with the TRIV Next . Both strollers are easy to fold and stand when folded for easier pickup and lifting into the car.   You can   fold the stroller with just one hand, freeing your other arm to hold your baby or car seat.

How to Fold Nuna TRIV and TRIV Next

To fold the Nuna TRIV   series strollers, first push the small button at the center of the recline lever, then lift the lever to fold the seat into the frame. It will fold about half way for now, then collapse completely in the next step.

Simply pull up on the leatherette strap integrated into the frame, and the stroller instantly collapses. The TRIV ring adapter folds in half within the stroller frame, a feature not seen on any other Nuna strollers.

See   this video   for a look at folding the Nuna TRIV Next.

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Car Seats Compatible with Nuna TRIV and Nuna TRIV Next

Both the  Nuna TRIV and  Nuna TRIV Next  fit all of the Nuna's PIPA series of infant car seats using the folding ring adapter included with purchase:

  • Nuna PIPA Lite
  • Nuna PIPA Lite LX
  • Nuna PIPA RX
  • Nuna PIPA Lite R
  • Nuna PIPA Lite RX

Learn more about the numerous   PIPA models in this   Nuna PIPA Series comparison , which explains differences in price, features, weight, and more.

With both the TRIV and TRIV Next, attaching a car seat to the stroller can be done in one quick, easy step.   Simply snap the car seat down into the ring adapter to secure, and use one hand to release the car seat by pressing a large button on the back of the car seat itself while lifting up on the handle with your other hand.

The ring adapter design is unique to Nuna, and no other adapters are available for the TRIV, so like Nuna's other strollers the TRIV and TRIV Next exclusively fit the Nuna PIPA car seats and no other brands.

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Nuna TRIV vs. Nuna TRIV Next Colors and Fabrics

With material features staying the same from the TRIV to the TRIV Next , the only significant difference is the addition of a new color and more leatherette detailing on the canopy.

Both the TRIV and TRIV Next are made with soft yet easy to clean fabrics, including UPF 50+ sun canopies that are water repellant.

In addition to ventilated seats (see Seats section above), both strollers offer additional ventilation on the sides of the canopy extension and a peek-a-boo window.

The frame color on the TRIV Next is matte black for both fashions, while the prior TRIV paired an aluminum frame with the lighter grey fashion.

Both strollers are available in neutral colors to fit any palette.

The Nuna TRIV was available in these colors:

  • Caviar black
  • Frost grey

The   Nuna TRIV Next  is available in these colors:

  • Hazelwood tan

Nuna TRIV Next vs. Nuna MIXX Next Stroller Comparison

Nuna TRIV vs. Nuna TRIV Next Benefits and Drawbacks

So which is better: the   Nuna TRIV   or the   Nuna TRIV Next ? Only you can decide which stroller is best for your family, but here are the benefits and drawbacks we see.

  • Narrower by 2.5"
  • Roomier storage pocket at the back of the seat
  • Smaller wheels and narrow rear wheel base makes steering on rough surfaces more difficult
  • 1 pound heavier than the TRIV Next
  • Brake is not easy to disengage with open-toed shoes

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Nuna TRIV Next

  • Larger, tougher wheels with all-wheel suspension provide a smoother, easier push over rough terrain
  • Weighs 1 pound less
  • Easy to use brake is sandal-friendly
  • Better for tall toddlers with zip off canopy and built in leg rest on frame
  • Wider wheel base means the stroller's footprint is 2.5" wider

Nuna TRIV vs. TRIV Next Stroller Comparison

Since the TRIV Next replaces all prior models of the TRIV, you may not have the option to choose between purchasing one or the other new.

Thankfully all of the benefits that prior TRIV models had have continued on, or been improved upon in the TRIV Next. Parents looking for a lightweight stroller will find the TRIV Next even lighter, yet with better handling on gravel or grass with the larger rear tires.

For parents looking for a much lighter or compact stroller, the Nuna TRVL is the ideal option for frequent travelers prioritizing convenience and a smaller footprint, while parents looking for a true all-terrain stroller might  compare the TRIV Next with the MIXX Next   - or even the   single-to-double DEMI Grow .

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

  • Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
  • Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
  • How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
  • What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
  • What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
  • What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.
