San Diego Zoo Safari Park: Insider Tips from a Local

M y husband and I absolutely love the San Diego Zoo and its sister property, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (previously known as the San Diego Wild Animal Park). So much so, that we’ve been members for years.

We appreciate the impressive number and species of animals housed here, the lush gardens, and the picturesque settings of these two parks. But more importantly, the Zoo and Safari Park are a renowned conservation organization. They have several programs committed to preserving endangered wildlife species worldwide.

The San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park while the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is situated 35 miles northwest of San Diego in the rolling hills of the San Pasqual Valley near Escondido.

With a massive 1,800 acres of land, 300 species and more than 3,600 animals on site, the Safari Park can feel overwhelming for a first-time visitor. However, with some advanced planning and tips we’re providing, you’ve got the tools to ensure your remarkable experience.

Timing Your Visit

Of no surprise, weekends and holidays are always the busiest times to be at the Safari Park, as are the summer months when many families vacation in San Diego. Getting to the park as early as possible to park opening is wise for many reasons.

The animals are more active in the morning, you’ll navigate fewer crowds, it’s the ideal time to watch shows and keeper talks, and if you’re visiting in the summer, this park can get quite warm as it’s more inland. Temperatures can easily reach the high 80s and, on some days, well into the 90s.

Other months of the year tend to be much more comfortable and here’s an insider tip you’ll appreciate: more animals give birth in the spring, so if you’re visiting at this time, you’re likely to see more of these adorable babies.

Pre-Planning Your Visit- Pre-Purchase Tickets and Download the App

Plan to spend no less than a full day here if you want to get the most out of your Safari Park experience. I highly recommend downloading the San Diego Zoo Safari Park app. This GPS-enabled map will allow visitors to view the daily schedule, discover dining and activities, import their tickets or memberships to the digital wallet and add their must-see wildlife to the day planner. Though paper maps are available after passing through the Safari Park entrance, guests can download a PDF map to familiarize themselves with the layout of the Park. Download it here for Android or Apple devices.

In addition, if you want to avoid the lines at the ticket booths at the Park entrance, you can purchase your tickets and tours in advance (more about tours a bit later).

Tickets can be purchased online here or used in combination with a San Diego Go Explorer Pass , or San Diego CityPASS . If, however, you are using the veterans’ or AAA membership discounts on admission, these tickets must be purchased at the park entrance.

Money Saving Tip: If you plan to visit the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Safari Park, you can also by a combo-ticket that saves you a little bit of money.

What to Wear for the Safari Park

Depending upon the time of year, it’s always good to check the weather forecast. Just be sure to check the weather conditions in Escondido versus San Diego as these areas can vary quite a bit. My best advice is to layer your clothing. You may want that jacket or sweater for your early morning arrival and then not need it once the sun comes out. Or need it again, once the sun goes down. Also, I’m a big fan of wearing cotton clothing that’s cool and comfortable. And if you want to dress in safari-type attire, go for it. It’s all part of the experience, and you won’t be alone.

Since you’ll be doing a lot of walking in the Park, be sure to wear good tennis shoes or hiking shoes. DO NOT wear flip-flops. You are not at the beach and you’ll regret this decision by the end of the day.

What to Pack for Your Visit

Make sure to come prepared for your Safari Park visit, especially if you’re bringing little ones with you. Even if you don’t, you’ll be glad to have these items during your exploration time. To ensure we don’t forget the necessities, we make a list and then check those items off as they’re packed to go.

Use a Light Backpack

Don’t forget your backpack! This is the best way to carry your most-needed items, but do keep your backpack a lightweight type so it doesn’t become too heavy as the day unfolds.

Take a Re-useable Water Bottle

We make sure to include a re-usable water bottle for each family member and we keep it in the freezer overnight, then fill it with ice water in the morning before leaving for the Park. There are places to get refills throughout the Park including complimentary ice water from vendors you can use to refill your bottle.

Bring Your Own Snacks and Meals

I do not pack meals when visiting the Safari Park, but you certainly can. Because the non-profit organization consisting of the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Safari Park are unable to customize food items to meet all dietary restrictions, they allow outside food to be brought into the park. This can be a big cost-saver for families and I’ve seen many of them take advantage of this option.

When our family visits, however, we do bring snacks. You’d be surprised at how hungry you will be with all the walking you’ll be doing. Our favorites? Granola bars, fruit snacks, and trail mix.

Be aware that you can’t bring glass bottles, straws, and large coolers.

Don’t Forget Your Hat, Sunglasses, Sunscreen, Wipes and Hand Sanitizer

This might seem like an unnecessary reminder, but when you’re getting ready to head to the Park in the morning, these are items that can be easily missed. Again, the park can get quite warm, especially during the summer and early fall months, so you’ll want to make sure to protect your skin with a good hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

And speaking of protection, I always keep a small pack of hand wipes and hand sanitizer with me, especially when I’m sharing public spaces (and germs) with others (and animals!).

Take Binoculars

If you have binoculars, make sure to bring them along. You’ll be glad you did when they provide some unbelievable close-ups of the animals. The lighter the better so they’re not too heavy to lug or carry. If you don’t, here are some lightweight ones that even connect to your phone for some cool photos!

Now that we’ve established your planning and packing strategies, let’s talk about the tips you’ll need once you’re in the Safari Park to make your visit even better.

Start Your Visit with the Africa Tram

The difference between the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park is the number of animals that run practically free-range in the Safari Park. This is mainly due to the park’s initial designation as a breeding facility for rare and endangered species. Hence, animals here have a lot more space to roam.

We always begin our Safari Park experience with an expedition on the Africa Tram. Not only is this a relaxing adventure on a path that takes visitors around some of the savanna habitats, but the 25-minute guided tram tour offers a myriad of information about the Park and the opportunity to see more wildlife in what’s designed to be close to their original habitat.

Tour tip: The Africa Tram is located in the African Outpost. You don’t need reservations, so it’s a first-come, first-serve experience. Try to get seats on the left side of the tram as this will give you the best opportunity for sightings and photos.

Must-See Animals and Exhibits

While there’s so much to see and explore animal-wise at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, we have our favorite areas and exhibits that shouldn’t be overlooked as these stand out as absolute winners in our book.

Walkabout Australia

When the Safari Park opened Walkabout Australia, we were so excited! Imagine walking a picturesque path without barriers between you and the Australian wildlife, where wallabies and kangaroos cross your paths and meander the grounds at leisure. Walkabout also includes a platypus exhibit, the only facility with these beautiful creatures seen outside of Australia.

Tiger Trail

Sumatran tigers call Tull Tiger Trail their home, representing one of the best-designed tiger enclosures in the world. Guests will find great photo spots and amazing viewing windows as these beautiful cats pace back and forth in front of the viewing windows, lounge by the water, cool off in the stream and stretch out on rock outcroppings overlooking the waterfalls.

Sadly, fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers exist in the wild and thanks to dedicated conservation efforts, over 25 tiger cubs have been born at the Safari Park. This is also one of the exhibits that you can visit on one of your last stops in the Park since tigers are mostly nocturnal and are more active at twilight.

World Gardens and Condor Ridge

Just a short distance stroll from Walkabout Australia and Tiger Trail leads to the highest vistas in the Safari Park featuring desert cacti and Native American fauna frequently seen in the Southwest. Here you’ll find the black-footed ferret, desert big-horned sheep, bald eagles, and the endangered California condor among others. And the area provides an expansive and impressive view of the Park and the surrounding San Pasqual Valley.

African Outpost

This meandering loop takes guests past a variety of African birds and mammals including waterfowl and includes the Lion Camp and Cheetah Run. You’ll find okapi, rhinos, nyalas, red river hogs, vultures and more.

Dining at the Safari Park

Visitors have 17 different dining experiences to select from in the Park with a variety of menus ranging from burgers and hot dogs to Mexican-inspired entrees, soups, salads, pizza and paninis.

Our favorite place to dine, however, is the open-air Watering Hole at Kijamii Overlook offering incredible views of the African Plains as you enjoy tasty sandwiches, fresh salads and an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage of choice. You’ll get a much-needed break, will love the surroundings and savor the moment. Reservations are highly suggested.

Take a Safari Tour- Add-On Experiences

This will take some advance planning and reservations, but these up-close-and-personal add-on experiences are so worth it, even if you just choose one.

The San Diego Safari Park offers nine different safari experiences with 27 variations. They range from open-air caravan safaris, behind-the-scenes safaris, the fascinating cheetah run, and more to roar and snore safaris, which are overnight sleepover adventures in nature.

Our favorites and ones we recommend to locals and visitors are the Caravan Safari (the most popular tour at the Park) and the Roar and Snore, where you don’t have to get an expensive ticket to South Africa to hear the sounds of the elephants, lions and more nearby.

This is an ideal park to venture into these unique experiences and one of the main reasons visitors come to the Safari Park or return for a future visit.

There are a host of other activities in the Safari Park that can more than help fill in your entire day’s visit which include animal encounters, a Lorikeet Feeding Experience, a petting zoo, and so many charming shops in each of the areas of the Park.

Whenever you choose to visit and whatever activities or tours you decide to schedule in the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, we hope your experience becomes a magnificent experience you’ll long remember.

For a couple of summers, I did work for the San Diego Zoo . I worked in the exit gift shop and one of the restaurants in the park. Before you visit, here are a few San Diego Zoo tips and tricks essential for a great day.

Best Time To Go

I worked at the San Diego Zoo during the summer of 2017 from June to August. I noticed quite a few things. Yes, the summertime is crazy for the zoo but there’s a small period of time when it really isn’t that bad.

Try to go before the 4th of July because some kids are still in school or haven’t started vacation time yet. The zoo is open every single day, so go on a gloomier day or a colder day, you’ll likely have more of the park to yourself.

Just like going to Disneyland or Disney World, the offseason is the best time to go. I guarantee the employees will be more lenient with things and you can get summer merchandise for a sales price. Plus, the animals will still behave as they usually do.

Important: If you have kids under 12, plan your visit for October, as kids are free during that time.

Try to go during the week in spring, fall, and winter. Everyone is either working or in school. Earlier in the morning or later in the day is ideal because most people are there in the late morning, early afternoon.

If you’re visiting in the summertime, go later in the day. After 1 pm is ideal during the middle of the week. Beware though, most days in the summer, the zoo is packed.

On A Budget? No Problem! Here Are Cheap Ticket Tricks

While the zoo is a non-profit organization, its prices can be steep. Day passes can be $72 without tax for adults and $53 for children between 3-11, if you go on less popular days. There are a few discounts you can get to make the visit worth it.

You can get the San Diego Go Pass which allows you admission to both San Diego Zoo, San Diego Safari Park , LEGOLAND , SeaWorld , and 55 other SoCal attractions for a set price. Get Your San Diego Go Passes Here.

The Zoo also offers plenty of discounts. Members of the military and their families get 10% off with valid ID. AAA members also get 10% for up to 6 people. Airline and cruise line employees and travel agents also have access to discounts. But if you aren’t any of those, you can get a big group discount for groups of 15 or more.

Seniors and students get a whopping 15% off. But these discounts are only available for tickets. The good news is that they are available on the major holidays too. And remember, in October kids (under 12) are free!

What To Bring To The San Diego Zoo

There are a few things the San Diego Zoo allows that other amusement parks and attractions don’t. If you are going to the zoo, especially in the summer, please make sure to have these items.

A Light Weight Backpack

The zoo allows its visitors to bring backpacks and other bags. Take advantage of this. Bring the backpack you usually use as an airplane carry-on as they will be durable. This is an item that’ll set the tone for your visit since you need room for a few things. A hiking or biking bag is also great.

A BIG Water Bottle

Yes, you are allowed to bring in a water bottle. Even though they are a global corporation, they don’t want their guests dropping dead from dehydration. Please, please, PLEASE bring a big water bottle or a couple of smaller water bottles. Don’t buy any water bottles in the park because they are grossly overpriced and definitely not worth it.

Get a reusable water bottle and fill it halfway to freeze overnight. Then fill the rest of the way before leaving, it’ll keep your water cold. Additionally, you can ask any concession to fill your water bottle with water. If you ask nicely, they will gladly help.

Healthy Snacks

You are allowed to bring food to the park. I recommend going to Walmart or the Dollar Store and getting some protein bars, granola bars, and other snacks to keep you going.

Not only will this keep your energy up but it will prevent you from overspending at shops. Most of the snacks there are not worth the price.

A huge animal with the snoot of a moose and the horns of a sheep is drinking water from his water trough

If traveling with children, be sure to pack enough snacks for at least two every two hours depending on how many kids you have.

Small Lunch Packs and Ice Packs

This is especially useful if you’re planning to visit for a whole day or you have kids. It allows you to store cheese sticks, fruits, veggies, and sandwiches.

This is also a way around having to buy food. If you put your lunch pack in your backpack then you can bring in picnic foods without getting in trouble. It’ll also make it safer to bring breastmilk or formula for infants.

Hand Sanitizer and Wipes

I’m going to hit you with some grade-A honesty. The zoo is gross. Millions of people touch every single surface and there are animal interactions. Hand sanitizer will prevent diseases of any kind.

Now, the janitorial crew is awesome but they can’t always keep up with everything, so please be cautious about what you touch. This is also helpful if you have kids. Keep those noses clean.

Sunscreen, Hat, and Lip Balm

You are going to be exposed to the sun for a long period of time, so please bring sunscreen and hat. You will regret it if you don’t. Be sure to also bring lip balm to fight dry lips. You will thank yourself later.

Cellphone and Charger

If you’re going in a group, make sure everyone has their cellphones and bring one charger for every kind of phone in the group. There are outlets around the zoo you can use and it’ll prevent wandering out lost.

Another great investment is one of those large portable batteries. That way, you can charge on the go, and don’t have to wait at an outlet.

What To Wear

You can wear pretty much whatever you want to as long as you’re comfortable. However, keep in mind that the zoo is built inside a valley. There is a steep walk no matter which direction you choose to take.

So, I recommend wearing something comfortable and breathable. I’ve walked around the zoo plenty of times and jeans are NOT something you should wear. The chaffing is incredible.

Wear something cute if you want but make sure it’s something you can comfortably workout in. Wear running shoes, something that won’t hurt your feet. You will be walking a lot.

Best Exhibits Around The Zoo

Not only have I worked at the zoo, I’ve taken many school trips to the zoo so I know which exhibits are totally worth seeing and which are kind of boring, like the koalas. The koalas are super cute, don’t get me wrong, but there is only a small window of opportunity to see them awake and moving. They sleep about 23 hours a day. These are only a couple, but most exhibits are worth going to because of the botanics around the zoo.

Penguins: Africa Rocks

If you want an exhibit that’s always full of activity then visit the African penguins. They’re always up to something goofy so it’s cute to see them. It may be a touch crowded but it’s very worth how funny they are.

Serval Cats: Africa Rocks

Serval cats are my favorite type of felines. They look like domestic cats but they’re kind of like dogs in wild cat bodies. It’s a real treat if you get to see them fooling around with each other. They can jump up to nine feet to catch things and are quite long.

Serval cat properly standing at the base of a tree in the forest

Takin: Asian Passage

Takin are super cool animals. You can find them in the Asian Passage section of the zoo.

Basically, takin has the nose of a moose, horns of a wildebeest, and a bison body. They’re related to sheep and goats. As with most of the animals, it’s a hit or miss as to whether or not you see them.

Red Panda: Asian Passage

Since the San Diego Zoo doesn’t have the Giant Pandas anymore , the next best thing is those cutie Red Pandas. They have red fur to camouflage into the red moss of their natural habitat.

Where To Get A Bite To Eat In and Around The Zoo

I will not lie, the zoo is expensive. Sometimes the food is not worth the price. I don’t recommend visiting the concession stands unless you just want some fries. Those fries are to die for.

Here are a couple of restaurants among the plethora of options.

Albert’s Restaurant: In the Zoo

I have personally worked at Albert’s so I can attest to the quality of food. It’s the only sit-down restaurant in the zoo and it can get super busy. I recommend not going for brunch or lunch because it is next to impossible to get a seat even with a reservation. They tend to overbook themselves. Make a reservation no matter what. It’s a popular restaurant so be prepared.

Reserve Your Table Here

The Prado: Balboa Park

The Prado is a really nice Spanish restaurant near the zoo. It’s great for a nice quiet dinner for every kind of diet. There are vegan and vegetarian options.

Make Your Reservation Here!

Sabertooth Grill: In the Zoo

Sabertooth is near the elephant exhibit so it’s a nice stop while you’re near the bottom of the zoo valley. You will need a break so you should take it. It has a nice fresh California vibe that is complete with the fresh food they serve. It’s perfect to re-energize yourself. No reservations are needed.

Best Route Around The Zoo

No matter how you start your route around the zoo, you are going to hike. There is no way around it. I recommend just going right for it and pick a random direction.

There’s no wrong route because it’s all going to take the same amount of time. Just make sure you have good shoes on and walk!

Hidden Gems Around the San Diego Zoo

There are regular exhibits out in the open that are pretty obvious, but there are little things that most people don’t even think about.

  • Beyond the Reptile House : There’s a section behind the reptile house filled with more scaly friends and more!
  • Orchid Greenhouse : On the third Friday of the month, at no extra charge, you can view some amazing orchids from 10 am to 2 pm.
  • Hummingbird Hut: Near the reptile house, beyond some foliage is a beautiful collection of bromeliads. Hummingbirds will buzz right by your head.

Essential Things To Know Before Visiting

  • Stay hydrated.
  • If you ask politely, you can get almost anything.
  • Avoid the flamingoes, your nostrils will burn.
  • Don’t get too close to the big cats, they’ll spray you.
  • Pick up after yourself.
  • YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO WANT SERVICE.
  • Practice patience and the employees will help you faster.
  • The keepers love telling you about the animals so just ask them.
  • Watch out for the tour busses!!!!
  • Check if there is a fun musical number happening near closing (they happen in the summer and holiday times).

The San Diego Zoo has been around for over 50 years now and it has not lost its genuine love for animals. Being a former employee, I can say with confidence that the keepers love and care for all the animals they look after. But like with any attraction, there are traps. Hopefully, these San Diego Zoo tips will help you have a pleasant visit!

AAA is a loosely associated group of clubs that each cover a small geographical area, usually a single state or portion of a state. Different clubs have different offers, so it’s worth checking both your own AAA state club and the Southern California AAA club websites. To check your own state club, just go to AAA.com and you will be redirected (usually) to your local club. If you haven’t yet set up your online access, you’ll sometimes need to do that to see your local club’s discounts.

To check the Southern California site, use this link and enter zip code 92112. Once you get to the club home page, select the “Discounts & Rewards” tab and then select “Theme parks & attractions.” If a particular discount on the Southern California site involves booking online through the club site, you will usually need to be a Southern California member. Discounts that involve showing your card at the gate are available to any AAA member. If you can get to a Southern California AAA club office, you can usually take advantage of offers that must be bought in person, even if you’re a member of a different AAA club.

AAA members get 10% off a 1-Day Pass, and sometimes discounts on other things such as food or merchandise.

Costco.com sometimes offers a very good discount on San Diego Zoo tickets and you don’t have to be a Costco member to buy through their site. (Non-members pay a 5% surcharge, however.) There is a shipping charge when ordering from Costco.com.

Seniors (65 and older) get 15% off a 1-Day Pass. Available at the ticket booth only (not in advance).

Airline / Cruise Line Employee Ticket Discounts

Airline and cruise line employees presenting a company-picture identification badge or CLIA at the ticket windows receive a 10% discount off the 1-Day Pass.

Active duty military personnel with valid military ID card receive FREE regular admission. Spouses and dependents receive 10% discount on 1-Day Pass only. Valid military ID required. Available at the ticket booth only (not in advance).

Children ages 3-11 receive FREE regular admission to the Zoo during the entire month of October (must be accompanied by a paying adult). The Zoo’s Guided Bus Tour is not included with Kids’ Free entrance and must be purchased separately at the Zoo.

Looking for a place to stay near the San Diego Zoo ? Choices are plentiful in the San Diego area near the San Diego Zoo, and getting around San Diego is fairly easy by car. If you don’t have a place in mind, we suggest checking out the hotels below. Our recommendations are not the cheapest places you can find– there are plenty of those out there– but we feel they offer a very good value for your dollar. As with our Preferred Hotels for Walt Disney World (Florida) , we suggest accommodations that will enhance your stay while not breaking the bank. That said, if you are used to Orlando area pricing, you will be in for some sticker shock. Low rates for decent but average hotels start at around $80-$120/night, mid-range hotels start at around $120 and can run upwards to $275/night or higher in peak seasons.

The San Diego Zoo is located at 2920 Zoo Drive in Balboa Park, just north of downtown San Diego. Zip code is 92101.

If you don’t know where to start, we suggest checking out:

  • Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown – 1.2 miles from the Zoo, 15 minute walk to USS Midway Museum; historic hotel with contemporary amenities.
  • Hilton Garden Inn Downtown – easy walking distance to the Zoo and one block from the bay, new property with interior courtyards and heated rooftop pool. Note: self parking is not available – valet only.
  • Best Western Cabrillo Garden Inn – Good value option if you are on a tight budget. Great location, exterior corridor style hotel, includes free continental breakfast.

Hotel Websites

Sometimes the best offers are directly through the hotels’ own websites, and if you are a member of a specific loyalty program, you probably want to search across all of that hotel company’s brands. For example, Hilton owns DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Waldorf Astoria, etc. Here are links to the overall parent company websites where you can search their whole portfolio– use Balboa Park, San Diego, California to find hotels closest to the San Diego Zoo:

  • Hilton Hotels (DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Hampton, Homewood Suites)
  • Marriott Hotels (Westin, Sheraton, Four Points by Sheraton, Courtyard, Fairfield, Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites, TownePlace Suites)
  • Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG)  (Candlewood Suites, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Staybridge Suites)

While officials have remained relatively quiet regarding the imminent arrival of San Diego's black-and-white visitors from China, an application submitted to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has revealed details ahead of the pandas long-term visit to the zoo.

In the San Diego Zoo's official request with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the park said it expected to have the renovated panda habitat ready for use by June, which could mean the pandas would arrive soon after that time.

The old exhibit, which was split into two sections, will be combined into a single habitat to give the bears more room to roam. An adjacent enclosure will also be retrofitted to allow for the expansion and more viewing space for guests. Though only two are planned for now, the enlarged exhibit has the capacity for four bears.

Although the duration might be different, this was the same practice in place the zoo had in the past, since the animals are the property of China and are on loan to San Diego.

The request also offers a look behind the curtain at the proposed habitat, breeding plans -- which could start in the next two to three years -- the Chinese zoos where the pandas are coming from and more.

A period of public comment is open until Tuesday regarding the zoo's plan. Of the 5 comments so far, all but one were supportive, including an endorsement from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Click here to be a part of the dialogue.

MEET SAN DIEGO'S PANDAS

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said its caretakers visited China in April to meet the giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, ahead of their planned trip to Southern California. An exact date for the handoff hasn't been set.

Yun Chuan, a mild-mannered male who's nearly 5 years old, has “deep connections” to California, the wildlife alliance said. His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao.

Xin Bao is a nearly 4-year-old female described as “a gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears.”

“Our conservation partners in China shared photographs and personality traits of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, but meeting them in person was so special," said Dr. Megan Owen, the alliance's vice president of conservation science. “It’s inspiring as people from around the world come together to conserve, protect, and care for these special bears, and we can’t wait to welcome them to San Diego.”

Smoke plumes from a fire pit at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park today provided a sobering reminder of the slaughter of rhinos taking place in Africa to feed a voracious demand for rhino horn. In a ceremony that signaled to the world the United States is committed to ending the scourge of wildlife trafficking, confiscated rhino horn items with an estimated black market value of  $1 million -- including whole horns, ornate objects and items falsely marketed as medicinals -- were reduced to ashes. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service partnered with the San Diego Zoo Global and California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to stage the symbolic event, the first of its kind in the nation.

“The poaching of rhinos in Africa is an international tragedy that is pushing these magnificent creatures to the brink of extinction,” said Service Director Dan Ashe. “The transience of the smoke we see today from the burning rhino horn reminds us of the fragility of the planet’s most imperiled species. Their survival hangs in the balance and will continue to do so as long as people are buying and selling illegal wildlife products. Only a rhino needs a rhino horn, and it’s time we all understood that.”

“With passage of a new state law prohibiting the sale or purchase of rhino horn and ivory products, CDFW’s wildlife officers stand ready to do their part to combat wildlife trafficking in California and abroad,” said David Bess, CDFW deputy director and chief of the Law Enforcement Division.

“San Diego Zoo Global has been working for decades, along with other accredited zoos, to keep a sustainable population of rhinos safe under human care while also working to protect them in their native habitats,” said Douglas G. Myers, president and chief executive officer, San Diego Zoo Global. “We felt this loss firsthand with the loss of the northern white rhino, Nola, last year.  Because of Nola, because the northern white rhino is now effectively extinct due to poaching, and for all rhino species, we will continue to work diligently to ensure the survival of these incredible animals.”

Rhinos already have disappeared from most of Africa. There are now only 20,000 white rhinos and 5,000 black rhinos left in the wild. Currently, a rhino is poached every eight hours in Africa. At this rate, rhinos could become extinct in the wild in 15 years.

Despite erroneous claims of its medicinal value, rhino horn – which is made of keratin, the same material that forms human fingernails – has no unique or particularly effective medicinal properties that can be scientifically attributed to the substance. Yet supposed remedies, which range from cancer treatments to hangover cures, are driving unprecedented poaching. In addition, objects made of rhino horn have more recently become status symbols to display success and wealth.

As the black market value of rhino horn has skyrocketed, poaching has reached unprecedented levels in Africa. In 2015, 1,175 rhinos were killed in South Africa alone (home to the largest remaining populations of the species).

The battle against rhino horn trafficking is being fought around the globe, including the United States where the Service since 2012 has led Operation Crash, appropriately named after the term for a group of rhinos. So far, the ongoing international criminal investigation has led to 41 arrests and 30 convictions, with stiff sentences demonstrating that the nation will not tolerate wildlife traffickers. The investigations, involving agents from multiple regions and agencies, also have seized substantial amounts of rhino horn, some of which was destroyed at today’s event.

Countries around the world are sending a clear signal that illegal wildlife products cannot be traded. For example, in April, 120 tons of elephant ivory and 1.3 tons of rhino horn were destroyed in Kenya, and many other countries are publicly destroying confiscated wildlife products. In the United States, the Service and its partners have held two events to crush more than seven tons of elephant ivory. In addition to capturing the public eye, these events create greater awareness urging consumers to be informed about wildlife products, especially those that may contribute to the poaching crisis.

The rhinoceros is an herbivore of prehistoric origin. All species of rhinoceros are protected under United States and international law. Since 1976, trade in rhinoceros horn has been regulated under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), a treaty signed by more than 180 countries around the world to protect fish, wildlife and plants that are or may become imperiled due to commercial trade.
