Free travel in Ireland
What is the free travel scheme, how to use free travel, where can i use free travel, how to qualify for free travel, how to apply for free travel, where to apply for free travel, senior smartpass for travelling in northern ireland.
The Free Travel Scheme allows you to travel, free of charge, on public transport and some private bus and ferry services.
Everyone aged 66 and over, living permanently in Ireland, can get the Free Travel Scheme.
People with disabilities and carers aged under 66 may also qualify for Free Travel.
If you qualify for Free Travel and you are married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting, your partner may travel with you for free if you meet certain criteria (see ‘Spouses, civil partners and cohabitants’ below).
If you can’t travel alone for medical reasons, you may get Free Travel for a companion. This allows a person aged over 16 to travel with you for free.
Changes to the Free Travel Scheme in 2024
From 29 July 2024, you will qualify for the Free Travel Scheme if you are aged over 17 and under 66, and:
- Have never been able to drive due to a disability
- Have a driving licence and are medically certified as ‘not fit to drive’ for at least 12 months.
While the change won’t take effect until July, you can download and fill in an application form for Free Travel for people medically certified unfit to drive (FTM) (pdf) now.
In this case, your spouse, civil partner, or cohabitant cannot accompany you free of charge when travelling.
If you qualify for Free Travel, your Public Services Card (PSC) will have FT (for Free Travel) in the top left-hand corner. The letter following it shows who can travel for free with you:
- FT-P - you can travel for free
- FT+S - your spouse, partner or cohabitant can travel with you for free
- FT+C - you can have a person (over 16) travel with you for free
You must show or scan your Public Services Card to the travel operator when you are travelling on public transport. Find out more about 'How to use your public services card for free travel' .
Paper travel passes are no longer being issued but you can still use your paper pass, if it is valid.
You can use your Free Travel on most Iarnród Éireann , Bus Éireann , Dublin Bus , DART and Luas Services and on certain private bus and ferry services (pdf) .
Free travel is also available on Dublin Bus Nitelink , Go-Ahead Ireland and TFI (Transport for Ireland) Local Link services .
Free travel does not include some special services such as Dublin Bus AIRLINK services .
You can find a full list of services where you can use Free Travel (pdf) on gov.ie.
There are no restrictions on the times you can use your Free Travel.
Living on the Aran Islands or Tory Island
If you are permanently living on any of the Aran Islands, you may get up to 12 single (or 6 return) air trips each year between the islands and Galway City.
People who live permanently on Tory Island (Co. Donegal) are entitled to 8 (or 4 return) free journeys on the seasonal helicopter service operating between the island and Falcarragh on the mainland.
If your public services card includes free travel for a companion, spouse, partner or cohabitant, they can also travel with you for free on the above services.

Go whale watching, spot moose and rare birds in Vesterålen , hike straight across all of Norway at Hellemobotn, explore caves in Helgeland , stay in traditional fishing villages and visit vibrant island communities all along the coast.
Nordland is like a real-life storybook, with rich stories, epic tales and spectacular illustrations!

Artist Eva Harr
It is no coincidence that the new travel pass is adorned with a painting by Nordland artist Eva Harr. She has painted a classic Nordland motif—a jagged mountain profile with the characteristic Nordland house in front. Eva Harr explains that the Nordland houses have been part of her illustrations and artwork ever since she first saw one on Røst in Lofoten. The same applies to the mountain, which of course had to be included. “I’ve had encounters with mountains on all of my travels in Nordland,” she explains. “The painting and its title Letter home is a metaphor and summarizes the old world, which is about to be lost.” Fortunately, these old Nordland houses have had something of a revival and they are once again a common sight from the fairway all along the coast.
Eva was born up north and has a strong attachment to Reine, which is her second home. “That’s why Letter home is a tribute to the old world that is now getting a new lease on life,” she explains. Eva Harr does not work with photorealism in her art, but she tries to express the essence of experiences in the landscape. Perhaps that’s why so many say they find her motifs so familiar.

Welcome home to Nordland!
We hope you’ll come to Nordland and feel what Eva Harr describes—a sense of familiarity and belonging, even if the places you visit are new to you. The feeling of coming home is universal and has more to do with moods and good encounters with nature and people than with a particular geographic location.
That’s why we say welcome home to Nordland, no matter where you’re from!

Global Entry
-->trusted traveler program enrollment -->.
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States by accessing the Global Entry processing technology at selected airports .
At airports, program members proceed to the Global Entry lanes where processing technology will be used to expedite the members by capturing a photo to verify their membership. Once the photo has been captured, the member will receive on-screen instructions and proceed to a CBP officer who will confirm that you have successfully completed the process.
Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interview before enrollment. If a traveler was unable to schedule an interview at an Enrollment Center prior to their international travel, they have an option to complete their interview via Enrollment on Arrival upon their arrival to the United States.
Another upcoming processing technology option for travelers will be the Global Entry Mobile App. This app will enable members to validate their arrival to the U.S. on their iOS or Android device prior to entering the Federal Inspection Services area.
While Global Entry’s goal is to speed travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. Any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.

Half Fare SmartPass - Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
To be eligible to apply for this half fare concessionary travel pass you must be getting the standard or enhanced mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP). If you get the daily living component only, you do not qualify for a SmartPass under this eligibility category.
Age and residence
To be eligible, you must also:
- be aged between 16 and 59
- have been permanently resident in Northern Ireland for a minimum of three months
How to apply
You can get an application form by:
- calling in person from any manned Translink bus or rail station
- by phoning 028 9066 6630 (applicants who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus can use the textphone number 18001 028 9066 6630) and asking for a form to be sent to you
- by emailing [email protected] and asking for a form to be sent to you (provide name and full address with postcode)
Guidance notes are available at this link:
- Half Fare Smartpass application guidance note
You will never be contacted asking for any bank account details when you're applying for or renewing a SmartPass.
Renewing your Half Fare SmartPass
SmartPasses are only valid for five years. Check the expiry date on the front of your SmartPass to see when it will run out, as it cannot be used to get free travel after this date.
Around three months before each SmartPass expires, pass holders should get a letter explaining how to get a new pass.
If you want further information about renewing your SmartPass, contact Translink:
- phone: 028 9066 6630 (applicants who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus can use the textphone number 18001 028 9066 6630)
If your PIP entitlement ends
If you are no longer getting the mobility component of PIP then you are no longer entitled to half fare concessionary travel.
You must contact Department for Infrastructure (DfI) Concessionary Fares .
Once DfI is aware that you no longer qualify for concessionary travel, your SmartPass will be cancelled.
Lost or stolen SmartPass
If your SmartPass is lost or stolen, you should report it to Translink as soon as possible to make sure the card is cancelled and avoid the likelihood of fraudulent use.
If anyone else tries to use a stolen pass, Translink staff will be alerted.
Unauthorised use of a SmartPass may result in prosecution.
To get your replacement SmartPass, you should either go to your local Translink bus or rail station, or:
- phone: 028 9066 6630
- email: [email protected]
Faulty or damaged SmartPass
If your SmartPass is faulty or damaged, you can get a free replacement.
Go to a Translink bus or rail station and exchange your SmartPass at the ticket office for a ‘Faulty SmartPass Receipt’ ticket. This will provide you with free travel on buses and trains for a seven-day period, during which time a new free replacement pass will be issued.
Or you can also get a free replacement pass by contacting Translink:
The ‘Faulty SmartPass Receipt’ ticket is only available at a Translink train or bus station when exchanged for the faulty or damaged pass.
Using a SmartPass
You should note that:
- Half Fare SmartPasses are issued for the sole purpose of proving eligibility for concessionary travel on eligible scheduled services operated by Translink and other participating operators
- a valid working SmartPass must be shown on every journey to get discounted travel or else the full adult fare will be charged for the journey
- Half Fare SmartPasses are valid only on scheduled bus and rail journeys made in Northern Ireland - they are not valid on cross-border journeys, or on journeys within the Republic of Ireland
- Half Fare SmartPasses are not transferable, nor are any tickets issued with them
- use of the Half Fare SmartPass is subject to the full conditions of carriage of the transport operator
- the SmartPass remains the property of the Department for Infrastructure and may be withdrawn at any time
- after you have boarded the vehicle and asked for your ticket, you should check the ticket to make sure that the details of your journey are right - if the details are not right, you should tell the driver/ conductor immediately
- it is the responsibility of Half Fare SmartPass holders to keep their SmartPass in good working condition
The Concessionary Fares Scheme privacy notice is available on the DfI website .
You can find further information about how to use your Half Fare SmartPass at this link:
- Half Fare SmartPass user guide
Glider services
You can use your Half Fare SmartPass on all Glider services.
Some changes have been made to make it easier for Half Fare SmartPass users to travel on Glider:
- Half Fare SmartPass users are able to travel free of charge on the new service
- SmartPass users do not need to use Glider ticket vending machines but must tap their card on a validator at the Glider halts before boarding the Glider
The free concession for Half Fare SmartPass users is a temporary reasonable adjustment until an accessible solution is available. It applies only to Glider services.
For all other Translink services, including Metro and Glider feeder services, Ulsterbus, and Northern Ireland Railways, Half Fare SmartPass users will continue to get a half fare concession on the price of a single ticket.

I have a Northern Complimentary Travel Pass for a return ticket. I have to complete the From and To boxes and the outward date and return date. I assume from having separate boxes for the dates, that I can travel outward on one date and return on another? Can I break my journey on both outward and return journeys?
RailUK Forums
Yes and yes. There have been occasional issues with gateline staff on the outward journey demanding the date for the return leg to be filled in, which is nonsense And you can take different routes out and back - I did Keighley to St Bees out via the S&C and back round the coast
You can also use a circuitous route as it specifies "northern only". And so whilst Darlington - York is usually only valid direct via ECML, it would be perfectly permissable to do Darlington - Newcastle - Carlisle - Leeds - York

Wigan to Scarborough is taking about 10 hours at present (only a slight exaggeration) and I'm planning something like that.
Staff have always been very happy to accept these if you’re on some form of sensible route (including the above much long, not usually permitted routes). I’ve only known the 1 case of staff wanting return date filled in at the same time and that was posted here.

I had a bit of a job getting let through a Northern ticket barrier using one of these tickets yesterday on my return leg. Barrier man kept insisting that these tickets were only valid for one day, despite there clearly being two date boxes to fill in: one for the outward and another for return journey. Eventually he backed down and let me through.

Thank you for all the advice. One more thing occurred to me. They are valid in the peak period, aren't they?
