Nasugbu, Batangas

Batangas emerges as one of the closest getaways from Metro Manila, celebrated for its captivating beaches and invigorating breeze. Within Batangas, Nasugbu, especially, is a sought-after destination, particularly for those who fancy coastal living and engaging in activities like diving and fishing in a serene environment. A mere 77 kilometers (48 mi) from Batangas City and 95 kilometers (59 mi) from Manila , Nasugbu beckons as an ideal retreat.

As the largest town and the second-largest municipality in Western Batangas, Nasugbu sprawls across a total land area of 27,851 hectares. Nasugbu is surrounded by neighboring municipalities, bordered by Maragondon , Magallanes , and Alfonso in Cavite to the north, Laurel , Calaca , and Balayan in Batangas to the east, and Lian and Tuy in Batangas to the south. Its western boundary meets the South China Sea , completing the scenic panorama of this delightful destination.

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Upon entering the town via the national highway, visitors are greeted by vast fields of sugar cane, corn, and rice, accompanied by picturesque hills and mountains. Central Azucarera Don Pedro , one of the country’s largest sugar producers, is situated here, contributing to the local economy. The terrain gently descends towards the South China Sea, adding to the town’s scenic beauty.

Nasugbu’s main industries revolve around agriculture, encompassing sugarcane, rice, corn, vegetables, coconut, and fruits, thanks to its rolling terrain and coastal location. Additionally, the town thrives in aquaculture.

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Being the home of a major sugar milling company, Nasugbu plays a vital role in sweet production, shaping a significant part of the local economy. The Nasugbu public market proudly showcases at least 10 unique rice cake varieties exclusive to the area, along with common varieties found elsewhere in the country. Even those less inclined toward culinary pursuits in Nasugbu take pride in crafting various sweets, including delicacies like sweetened yam, sweetened coconut, and similar treats.

Nasugbu’s origin lacks historical documentation, with the earliest written records dating back to the establishment of the Parish of St. Francis Xavier by the Jesuits in 1852.

Fast forward to August 3, 2007, when President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo issued Executive Order 647, designating Nasugbu, renowned for its white sand beach resorts, as a special tourism zone. This zone encompasses popular spots like Punta Fuego and Mounts Palay-Palay , home to Mount Pico de Loro .

Discover a multitude of destinations ideal for hikers and divers. A journey up Mt. Batulao in Nasugbu, provides an opportunity to connect with nature along a beginner-friendly trail. The two to three-hour hike culminates in breathtaking views of Batangas from the summit, with the warm breeze adding to the experience.

For a more laid-back trek, one can opt for Mt. Talamitan , the “younger sibling” of Mt. Batulao, also located in Nasugbu. Tailored for hiking beginners, the trail features open grasslands where observers may catch a glimpse of farm animals. Starting the hike early in the morning is advisable to avoid the intense afternoon sun.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the Grecian atmosphere at Fortune Island , situated on the coast of Nasugbu, Batangas. The picturesque setting against Greek-inspired ruins and the vibrant blue sea makes it a perfect backdrop for photos. Fortune Island offers opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and cliff diving, attracting sun worshippers and campers alike. Formerly a private island hosting a luxury resort, operational challenges, particularly the lack of a reliable freshwater source, led to its closure in 2006. The island’s limestone cliff still showcases remnants of its grandeur in the form of Grecian pillars and statues.

Although now a popular destination among campers and sun enthusiasts, Fortune Island was once a well-kept secret among divers. Its rocky terrain, a limited stretch of sand, and the presence of shipwreck diving sites, including the Dutch warship Mauritius that sank in 1600, make it an intriguing choice for those seeking both adventure and serenity.

For those seeking an untouched beach camping spot in Nasugbu, Batangas, Bituin Cove is worth considering. This beach features coarse beige sands and a vibrant marine life, offering the option to rent tents or open cottages for a night under the stars.

Punta Fuego , another captivating Nasugbu beach, boasts white sands and clear waters. With historical significance as the site of the Battle of San Diego in the 1600s, it is now managed by upscale companies like Club Punta Fuego . The area offers various activities, including snorkeling, wakeboarding, banana boating, golf, and a spa for relaxation.

For a less explored Nasugbu gem, travelers can head to Calayo Beach . They can experience the simple charm of rural life while lounging on its light brown sands, surrounded by lush greenery. Calayo Beach, a public beach with budget to mid-range resorts, serves as a gateway to even better beaches like Pulo Island , Kayraang Cove , and Bituin Cove .

Known locally as Pulo-pulo , Pulo Island or Loren Island is just 20 minutes from Calayo Beach . This piece of paradise offers a fantastic island escape with beige, pebbly sands, two beaches, and what appears to be a sandbar connecting to another rocky islet.

Tali Beach , a well-known summer destination in Nasugbu, Batangas, has been a favorite among travelers, especially those seeking the thrill of cliff-jumping. The beach, nestled within a private subdivision, limits access to residents and their guests, emphasizing the importance of knowing someone on the inside.

Fortune Island and Fantasy Land Castle in Batangas

The province of Batangas is located in the CALABARZON region of the Philippines. A huge section of the province sits on the southwestern coast of Luzon island.

Batangas is one of the most popular holiday destinations for domestic travelers mainly because of its proximity to Manila , the Philippines' capital. If you want a quick weekend getaway or vacation, Batangas is perfect as it is only about 108 km away, around a 2 - 2.5 hours drive from Manila.

To get here, you can rent a car, book Batangas tours , or take one of the buses that regularly connect to the province. Batangas’ accessibility from Manila is not the only reason to visit it. The province is such a great holiday destination for families and big groups because it offers a wide range of experiences and attractions.

Batangas tourist spots include historical sites, distinct architecture, and outdoor attractions. The province is home to several gorgeous beaches near Manila , ranging from black to powdery white. Milea Bee Farm is located on Kurba Road, Lipa Batangas, about 21 km away from Batangas City. The farm attracts many visitors due to its authenticity and serene environment and is one of the top farm destinations in the Philippines . The farm does not feel like a tourist trap as it advocates bee propagation, beekeeping education, and agricultural sustainability.    The main tourist activity in Milea is a guided farm tour called “Beesita sa Bukid Tour.” This tour starts with a short educational talk on bees and their habitat. Afterward, you can walk around the property and learn about different flowers, plants, and fruits growing here. The tour also includes seeing the bees up close and honey tasting.

Visitors attend mass near the Monte Maria Shrine in Batangas

Monte Maria is not just a shrine but an international pilgrimage and conference center built in honor of the Virgin Mary. Formally known as Montemaria International Pilgrimage and Conference Center, the complex spans 8 hectares and is situated 20 kilometers outside of Batangas City.

Monte Maria is one of the top Batangas tourist spots because of its uniqueness. It is meant to be both a religious and tourism site. Although devotees and pilgrims are attracted to it, Monte Maria caters to regular tourists as well.

The main landmark of the center is the Virgin Mary Shrine, officially named Mother of All Asia-Tower of Peace. At over 98 meters, this tower is considered one of the tallest Virgin Mary statues in the world. It sits on the top of a plateau, about 148 meters above sea level. The tower overlooks Verde Island Passage, Batangas Bay, and parts of Oriental Mindoro.

Monte Maria houses two chapels, a restaurant, a souvenir shop, and impressive architectural designs. It is also a retreat and retirement center that has rooms and spaces for workshops and conferences. Monte Maria is about 20 kilometers away from Batangas City.

Facade of Calaruega Church in Batangas

Caleruega Church is one of the most famous churches in Batangas. This property is perched on the highest hill of Nasugbu Town. Caleruega is named after a Spanish municipality.

Caleruega Church has beautiful architecture and a tranquil natural environment that makes it ideal for religious activities and spiritual retreats. In fact, it has become a well-known wedding venue.

Caleruega is not just a church but a retreat center surrounded by lush scenery. Its main building is called the Transfiguration Chapel. This chapel has a nice colonial design and a peaceful ambiance. This is the most photographed part of the property and where most couples choose to wed.

  • Book a Caleruega Church tour and explore other Tagaytay and Batangas attractions

Aside from the main building, you can visit the other interesting sections of the complex during your visit. Some of these are the Fountain Compass, the Tent Chapel of Transfiguration, St. Dominic’s Point, Kampo Terraces and Amphitheater, and the Dominicum’s grand stairway. Caleruega’s outdoor area also features a koi pond, a Japanese garden, plant nursery, a worm farm, a hanging bridge, and various walkways.

You can visit Caleruega Church on a day trip and spend a couple of hours exploring the property. However, since it’s also a retreat center, Caleruega is equipped with cottages, large halls, and a campsite to accommodate guests who wish to stay overnight.

One of the buildings in Fantasy World, Batangas

Fantasy World was meant to be the Philippine version of Disneyland. It’s supposed to be the largest and grandest theme park in the country. However, this ambitious project has remained unfinished. Fantasy World has never opened as a theme park. According to local stories and rumors, the Japanese owner had financial problems and, therefore, stopped the construction years ago.

Despite being a failed project, Fantasy World is still a favorite Batangas tourist spot and a frequent filming location. Its large fairytale castle, medieval-themed structures, and sad story have managed to attract many tourists.

  • Book a Fantasy World tour to explore this Disneyland-like attraction

You can still access Fantasy World if you pay the minimal entrance fee. But it’s not a functional theme park, so there are no rides or shows. With its intact medieval architecture and lush surroundings, Fantasy World is still very scenic.

While here, you can walk around, enter the fairytale-like buildings and take photos. One popular spot in the abandoned park is the hanging bridge connected to two treehouses. You can climb to the top of the treehouses and enjoy the views of Batangas, including the Taal Volcano.

Fantasy World is located along Diokno Highway in Lemery, Batangas. A local homeowners association is managing and operating the property.

Facade of the Taal Basilica in Batangas

Taal Basilica’s official name is Basilica of St. Martin de Tours. It stands on top of a hill at the center of Taal Town. This basilica is huge; it is 96 meters high and 45 meters wide. It is often referred to as the largest Catholic Church in Asia.

Taal Basilica was reconstructed several times in the 19th century. Its Baroque appearance today is attributed to architect Luciano Oliver, who redesigned the church in 1856.

The church’s main draws are its silver tabernacle and facade, which is comparable to the one at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Taal Basilica’s 26 classical columns at the entrance are indeed an impressive sight!

Taal Basilica is a popular wedding site and a favorite destination of devotees during the Catholic Lenten season.

When you enter, the basilica’s altar size will immediately impress you. This altar is 10 meters wide, 24 meters high, and lined with Doric columns with a Jesus Christ statue at the center.

Taal Basilica is the main building in Taal Park, which has other notable landmarks like the Rizal College and the Escuela Pia: Taal Heritage Center.

The island is one of the best spots to snorkel in Batangas. It also has a beach composed of white sand and crushed shells.

Sombrero Island is located off the coast of Anilao. Visitors usually take a boat tour to reach the island from Anilao’s shoreline. The boat ride from the mainland takes about 15 to 20 minutes. However, travel time may vary depending on sea conditions.

  • Book a  Batangas island-hopping tour to Sombrero Island, Portales Beach, & Sepoc Beach

You need to pay a fee to enter Sombrero Island. Aside from snorkeling, you can swim and have a picnic on the beach. You can also walk around the island. It is small enough that it will only take less than an hour to explore it.

Woman enjoys the view from Mt. Maculot in Batangas

Mt. Maculot is one of the most well-known hiking spots in the Philippines . This mountain stands at 930 meters above sea level. The hike to the summit is rated 4/9 in difficulty level. Even though some parts of the mountain trail are slippery, steep, and muddy, a reasonably physically fit person can do the trek.

Trekking to the top of Mt. Maculot usually takes about 5 to 6 hours. Some hikers start the climb before dawn to maximize sunrise views.

Mt. Maculot is situated in Barangay Cuenca, Batangas. Before trekking, you will need to pay a fee and register with the local authorities. You also need to hire a trained guide to ensure a safe journey.

People hike to Mt. Maculot’s summit to enjoy some of the best views of Taal Volcano and Taal Lake. The Mt. Maculot trail features 14 resting camps or stations. These stations symbolize Jesus Christ’s crucifixion journey on Mount Calvary.

The climb has three main destinations, which are “the Grotto,” “the Rockies,” and “The Summit.” “The Grotto” is the site for the Lady of Lourdes shrine and a popular vantage point for Mt. Maculot’s summit. “The Summit” offers views of the Taal Volcano Island, the Labangan Bay, and Mount Makiling, a dormant volcano. “The Rockies” is the third vantage point that has views of the picturesque rocky cliffs along the southernmost part of Lake Taal.

View of the ridges of Mt. Batulao, Batangas

Situated in Nasugbu, Batangas, Mt. Batulao is one of the most accessible mountains near Manila and is another top hiking destination in the Philippines. Mountain climbing enthusiasts come to Mt. Batulao because of its many peaks, boulder formation, grass ridges, and scenic views.

Mt. Batulao is one of the easiest Batangas mountains to trek, making it a perfect location for training climbs.

The journey to the summit is composed of open trails and rolling slopes. The mountain summit is about 811 meters above sea level. Mt. Batulao has 12 peaks that offer panoramas of Taal Lake, Cavite, Nasugbu coastline, Maragondon mountains, Tagaytay highlands, Balayan Bay and Mt. Maculot.

The mountain offers two main trails, called “Old Trail” and “New Trail''. The Old Trail is located in the mountain's eastern section and has 10 campsites/stations. The New Trail is on the west side of the mountain, and it features only one large campsite.

The Evercrest Golf Course in Nasugbu is the jumpoff point to Mt. Batulao. From the golf course's entrance, you can walk or use the tricycle (local three-wheeler) to reach the start of the trails. Local guides, some of which are kids, would usually offer their services at the entrance.

The Greek structures on Fortune Island, Batangas

Fortune Island lies just an hour off the coast of Nasugbu, Batangas. It features a white sandy beach, a cliff diving point, and clear turquoise water.

The island’s history is quite interesting as it used to be the site of a luxurious resort. Unfortunately, the resort closed down because of the huge maintenance cost and the absence of freshwater sources. The Grecian Acropolis, which sits on top of a limestone cliff, is a reminder of Fortune Island's luxury resort days.

  • Book a Fortune Island tour in Batangas

The jumping point to Fortune Island is the Fortune Island Resort on the mainland. You must pay an entrance fee at the resort to enter the island. You will also need to ride a boat for 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the island.

Taal Volcano is the most recognizable landmark of Batangas. Standing at only 3 meters above sea level, it is one of the smallest volcanoes in the world. Aside from its size, Taal stands out because of its unique physical features.

Inside the Taal Volcano’s caldera lies the beautiful Taal Lake, which surrounds more than 40 craters and cones. In the middle of this lake sits Volcano Island. At the center of Volcano Island is another lake referred to as the Main Crater Lake.

However, you can still enjoy Taal Volcano panoramas from vantage points in the lakeshore towns of Talisay and San Nicolas or when you book Tagaytay hotels . WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

Due to its popularity, Anilao has become the poster image of the municipality of Mabini . It has become synonymous with the town it represents. In reality, however, Anilao is just a barangay and many of the resorts that are often tagged “Anilao” are located in other nearby villages.

Tucked in the northern coast of the Calumpang Peninsula, it is one of the areas in Batangas that underwent development ahead of others. Regarded as the birthplace of scuba diving in the Philippines, Anilao’s rich and colorful underwater scenery attracts visitors more than its shores.

Anilao is also a setting-off point to other attractions including Sombrero Island and Masasa Beach in Tingloy, the only island municipality of Batangas. It is also the jump-off point to Mt. Gulugod Baboy , a relatively easy hike, perfect for trekking beginners. Some hikers head to the beaches to take a refreshing swim after the climb.

The municipality of Tingloy occupies Maricaban Island, making it the only municipality outside mainland Batangas. It’s situated off the tip of the peninsula and sandwiched between Balayan Bay and Batangas Bay.

For a long time, the isolated town has been off the radar until beachgoers heard the news about Masasa Beach , a pristine stretch of fine sand and clear waters. Today, Masasa Beach is one of the most popular attractions in the province, attracting thousands of tourists from Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon.

The well-known Sombrero Island, which is often associated with Anilao, is actually part of Tingloy too. Another beach destination in Tingloy is Oscar Beach, sometimes called by the locals as Oscar Island. All these pieces of tropical paradise make Tingloy one of the fastest-rising tourist destinations in the country.

3. Laiya, San Juan

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Laiya Aplaya , or simply Laiya, is another seaside barangay that pretty much represents the whole town of San Juan in terms of tourism. In fact, many beach resorts in other parts of the municipality — like those in nearby Barangay Hugom — are also being marketed with the term Laiya in tow to catch more attention or spark interest.

The long and wide stretch of fine light-colored sand harbors numerous resorts and hotels, ranging from budget to high-end. It has become one of the go-to weekend destinations and a venue for events such as company outings and even weddings.

6. Verde Island

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Verde Island , also called Isla Verde , is nestled in the middle of Verde Island Passage, hailed as the center of the world’s marine biodiversity by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study.

Just 45 minutes off the Batangas mainland, this sleepy fishing island in Batangas City remains undisturbed by tourism as of today. Most tourist amenities and activities are concentrated in Mahabang Buhangin and Cueva Sitio. With very few resorts, homestays, and restaurants, its rugged shores are almost devoid of tourists. But that’s not to say that this breathtaking island has nothing to offer. In fact, it offers something that not many Luzon destinations can provide — some peace and quiet.

Verde Island is perfect for those who are looking for a serene, back-to-basics kind of beach escape.

If you are looking for a unique beach destination n Batangas, the municipality of Lobo is notable for its pebble beaches. Instead of shores covered with fine sands, most of the beaches in Lobo, especially in Malabrigo, are carpeted by smooth pebbles and stones.

This has been my family’s secret summer getaway because we like the less crowded beaches. A few years ago, it was quite challenging to travel to Lobo because some parts of the winding road were not yet cemented. But today, it’s easier to reach either from Batangas City or from San Juan.

Despite the development, it’s still tamer and quieter compared to other more developed coastal towns in Batangas. Most of its patrons seek serenity more than anything. As for me, I like that I don’t have to worry about the sand sticking to my hair or my swimwear. Haha!

My family likes walking to the lighthouse in the morning when we visit for an overnight stay. The Malabrigo Point Lighthouse (Faro de Punta Malabrigo) is a National Historical Landmark. In the past, we can freely explore inside and around the lighthouse, but during our recent visit, we can only admire the lighthouse from the outside. We don’t mind because it also serves as a viewpoint, overlooking the sea and the surrounding areas.

8. Taal Heritage Town

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Taal was originally located in what is now the town of San Nicolas near Taal Lake. The former provincial capital was forced to relocate to its present location when the Taal Volcano violently erupted in the mid-18th century.

Although commercialization is apparent, the town center still elicits that strong old town vibe with the well-preserved town hall building and ancestral houses flanking the streets. But the town’s highlight is the Basilica de San Martin de Tours (or simply Taal Basilica ), said to be the biggest Catholic church in Asia. Sitting atop a hill, it definitely commands attention and is an iconic landmark.

If you get hungry, you can try some of Batangas’ signature dishes like the tapang Taal and Taal longganisa . You can order these at Don Juan BBQ near Taal Market, where you can also go food tripping or pasalubong shopping.

If you have more time, you can also check out the Taal-made Barong Tagalong, balisong-making, and Taal embroidery products.

9. Fantasy World, Lemery

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Most tourists assume that Fantasy World is located in Tagaytay because of the close proximity, higher elevation and the backdrop of the rolling hills, but it is, in fact, in the fringes of the municipality of Lemery in Batangas.

It was supposed to be a magnificent theme park poised to rival Disneyland, but the construction was halted. Today, it remains unfinished but not abandoned. It is operational as a photo spot destination, perfect for those whose flights of fancy are filled with either fairy tales or grim (or Grimm) aesthetics. It is also a popular prenuptial shoot location.

The park and some of the rides, which are not operational, will make you yearn for something that is almost within your grasp but is unattainable. Despite the lack of action, the whole place is still Instagram-worthy. It was also the filming location for movies ( Fantastica , Got 2 Believe ) and TV shows ( Majika ).

The highlight of the park is the towering castle, which was the centerpiece of the plan. If you are not afraid of heights, you can climb to the top of the main tower and admire the view of the park and the surrounding areas.

Opening Hours: As of writing, the management doesn’t allow tourists inside the premises anymore. Some visitors just take photos in front of the gate or from a viewpoint along the road. But in the past, the opening schedule was 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entrance Fee: Presently, it is CLOSED to the public until further notice. The entrance fee used to be P100 per person. Getting There: Ride a jeepney or bus from Olivarez/Rotonda to Boundary (Cavite-Batangas boundary). The fare for the jeepney is P25 and for the bus, P39. From the boundary, ride a jeepney bound for Lemery but tell the driver to drop you off at the side of the road leading to the Fantasy World entrance. The fare is P18. You can also charter a tricycle for a special trip, but the rate is steep — P200 per ride.

✅ MORE INFO: FANTASY WORLD TRAVEL GUIDE!

Lemery also has beach resorts but don’t expect to see white sand. The municipality’s coast is strewn primarily with black volcanic ash. These beach resorts are also a bit far from Fantasy World, which is perched up in the mountains.

10. Views of Taal Volcano

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

As the centerpiece of Taal Lake, it is also described as an island (Volcano Island) within a lake (Taal Lake) within an island (Luzon main island). It is certainly scenic and just watching it from afar can be calming, but don’t underestimate its power. It’s very, very active and has the nastiest fiery mouth.

Before the 2020 eruption, the Volcano Island is accessible to tourists who wish to get to the edge of the crater and marvel at this small but mighty nature’s wonder. While you can admire it from Tagaytay, you can go to Talisay to get closer to Taal Lake.

You don’t need to check in to a ridge-perched hotel to have a good look at the lake and volcano. Several establishments like restaurants and shopping centers offer a magnificent view, including the Twin Lakes complex, which is actually located in Laurel, Batangas, even though it is often touted as a Tagaytay attraction.

11. Lipa Heritage Sites and Cuisine

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Lipa might be a highly urbanized city with many modern establishments and infrastructures, but the Batangan identity is never lost. The city boasts historical sites, churches, and signature Batangas cuisine.

Casa de Segunda is a well-preserved ancestral house that echoes the architectural style during the Spanish colonial period. The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian or simply Lipa Cathedral is one of oldest in Batangas and the most visited.

And while you are there, order the Batangas staple merienda — lomi and Lipa-style goto . Coffee lover? Have a sip of Kapeng Barako after a meal.

12. Nasugbu Beaches and Coves

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

One of the areas in Batangas that had an early taste of development is Nasugbu. Its seaside villages have flourished into resort villages, which are lined with long-established resorts. Some of its beaches and sand pockets are nestled within exclusive villages and resorts that require membership, connection, or prior booking to access them. These are Tali Beach Subdivision, Punta Fuego, Hamilo Coast, and Canyon Cove among others.

But don’t fret, most beaches, coves, and islands remain accessible even without prior reservation. These are Calayo Beach, Bituin Cove, Pulo Island, and Fortune Island, just to name a few.

13. Fortune Island

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Known for its ruins of Grecian pillars and statues, which remind visitors of its glorious past, Fortune Island was once a luxurious exclusive resort that closed its doors in 2006.

Today, Fortune Island is open to the public. Despite its luxurious past, what draws tourists to the island is its rugged charm. Go cliff jumping, trek to the lighthouse, take lots of photos, do snorkeling, and even go scuba diving. Have fun under the sun while exploring the whole island. If you are swimming, there are two areas where you can swim — the shallow but rough waters (beach) and the calm but deep waters (cliff-diving area).

If you are into diving, some nearby diving sites are the Blue Holes, the Wreck, and Fortune NW. If a day trip is not enough, you may camp overnight on the island. If so, you can do stargazing and astrophotography!

To get to the island, you must register, pay the entrance fee, and charter a boat at Fortune Island Resort on the mainland. Bring your own food and water. Bring your trash with you when you go back to the mainland.

Entrance Fee: P350/pax (Day Trip), P500/pax (Overnight) Jump-Off Point: Fortune Island Resort, Apacible Boulevard, Barangay Wawa, Nasugbu, Batangas Boat Rate: Day Trip P4000 (1-4 pax), P4500 (5-8 pax), P5000 (9-12pax), P5500 (13-15 pax), P6500 (16-20 pax); Overnight P4500 (1-4 pax), P5000 (5-8 pax), P5500 (9-12pax), P6000 (13-15 pax), P7000 (16-20 pax)

14. Calatagan Beach Resorts

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Calatagan is most popular for its beaches and dive sites. This peninsular municipality is best known for its shores, which are strewn with cream-colored sand, lapped up by shallow waters.

The beaches of Calatagan is lined with resorts that cater to different types of travelers and tourists. Most of the resorts are concentrated in these areas: Barangay Bagong Silang, Barangay Santa Ana, Barangay Uno, Barangay Balibago, and Balibago Quilitisan.

The Stilts Calatagan Beach Resort is on the high-end side and is a popular events venue, particularly weddings. Aquaria Water Park attracts those who not only love aqua parks with slides but also beach front experience. Manuel Uy Beach and Ivory Beach are rising beach camping destinations.

It also has sandbars that can be reached by renting a boat from one of the many resorts running along its shoreline.

Aside from the beaches, Calatagan is also famous for its Spanish-era lighthouse, the Cape Santiago Lighthouse , located at the southern tip of the peninsula.

15. Matabungkay, Lian

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Matabungkay may sound “old school” now, but it became well-known for a reason. This strip along the coast of Lian has attracted tourists since the 1950s. In its heyday, it was one of the prettiest, most easily accessible beaches from Manila.

Today, of course, a lot has changed. Other beaches have been “discovered” over the years, pushing Matabungkay to the back seat. But although Matabungkay isn’t as popular as the other Batangan beaches, it remains a go-to place for family outings and group excursions among local tourists.

The long stretch of ash-colored sand is lined with resorts, stores, and houses. But its most striking feature is the dozens of iconic floating bamboo raft cottages.

16. Mt. Maculot

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Maculot in Cuenca is another favorite hiking destination near Manila. Rising over 900 meters asl, Maculot will test your endurance with its steep assaults and rocky features. Aside from the spacious campsite, the other major draws are the summit and the “Rockies”, which both present a picturesque view of Taal Lake, the surrounding towns, and the lush forest.

Take extra precaution when going to the Rockies for photo ops because the wind can get too strong. Crouch or scramble low if you must. Always prioritize safety more than anything else.

If you don’t have a car, Klook is offering a private Maculot day hike tour which covers round-trip transfers from McDonald’s El Pueblo, Ortigas to Mount Maculot, a guide, snacks, and registration fee.

17. Mt. Batulao & Mt. Talamitam

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Mount Batulao is another famous peak, thanks to its proximity to Manila. This is one of the most scenic hiking destinations that are easily accessible, just a bus ride away, from the capital. The jump-off point, KC Hillcrest (Evercrest), is located close to the border of Batangas and Cavite.

Much of the trail has easy slopes and the assaults are not too steep, save for the ridgeline near the summit, so Batulao is generally recommended for beginners.

What makes the hike challenging is its bareness, with grasslands covering much of the surface. During the summer months, the hike might be difficult because of the lack of shade. But the trail is punctuated by several rest spots.

You and your companions can book a private day hike tour through Klook if no one in your group knows how to drive. The package is inclusive of the private hike, round trip transportation between McDonald’s El Pueblo and Mount Batulao, registration fee, snacks, and a guide.

Neighboring Mount Talamitam might be shorter than Batulao but the hike involves more assault and steeper climb, especially near the summit. You can forgo taking the almost vertical climb to the summit by opting to go for the winding but longer trail, which is usually taken when descending the mountain. The new jump-off point is at Barangay Kayrilaw. Some hikers do a twin hike of Mount Batulao and Mount Talamitam.

18. Taal Lake Yacht Club

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

The Taal Lake Yacht Club sounds fancy and intimidating but it welcomes day tour visitors. Docked on the northern shore of Taal Lake, it can be conveniently reached from Tagaytay via Tagaytay-Calamba road and Ligaya Drive. Prior to the 2020 Taal Volcano eruption, the resort was best known for its volcano trek tour packages.

If such tours are no longer available, you can still enjoy water-related activities like sailing and kayaking. They also rent out Hobie catamaran units. It also allows day trip camping and offers tent rental. But if you have your own tent, you can bring it and just pay for the camping site or tent-pitching fee. It also permits photoshoots — non-commercial and commercial.

Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily). The schedule may change without prior notice. Please check the official website or FB page for schedule updates. Entrance Fee (Non-Members): P300/head Rates: P100/day (Camp Site); P500/day (4-Man Tent Rental + P1000 Deposit Fee); P400/day (hut rental, good for 10 pax); P300-350/head (Non-Commercial Shoot); P5000 Royalty Fee + P300-350/head (Commercial Shoot) Contact Details: For corporate events, photoshoots, and other queries, you may contact the management at 0917 838 3726, 0917 123 1403, the official website, and the official Facebook page. Getting There: The most recommended, convenient, and fastest way is via private car. Just take the Tagaytay-Calamba Road and then turn right to Ligaya Drive. Use Google Maps or Waze. The travel time from Tagaytay to TLYC is about 15 minutes.

19. Montemaria Shrine, Batangas City

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

Overlooking Batangas Bay, the Montemaria International Pilgrimage and Conference Center (or simply Montemaria Shrine ) is an extensive religious sanctuary, serving not only as a pilgrimage site and a retreat venue but also as a city landmark and a tourist attraction.

Towering over the whole complex is the colossal Statue of Mary, Mother of All Asia , considered the world’s tallest statue of the Virgin Mary as of this writing.

You can climb to the observation deck to get a breathtaking view of the bay and the surrounding areas including Verde Island, Tingloy, and some parts of Oriental Mindoro.

20. Santo Tomas

nasugbu batangas tourist spot

It’s easy to dismiss Santo Tomas as simply a collection of industrial parks, subdivisions, and farmlands, but it also has a lot to offer to curious visitors.

Santo Tomas takes pride in gifting our motherland with one of its most prominent historical figures — Miguel Malvar , known as the last Filipino general to surrender to the Americans during the Philippine-American War. The Municipal Hall is fronted by the commanding Miguel Malvar Shrine and Monument , which pays tribute to the homegrown hero. Housed in an adjacent building is the Malvar Library and Museum , which offers a glimpse into the life and legacy of the revolutionary general.

Another key attraction in Santo Tomas is the National Shrine of Saint Padre Pio, which draws in thousands of visitors — mostly pilgrims and devotees. The shrine complex is also composed of a circular main church, the bell tower, and the Sanctuary of the Relics of St. Padre Pio, just to mention a few.

Sky Ranch Tagaytay

Sky Ranch is a favorite here in Tagaytay especially for families who are traveling with kids or kids-at-heart. Although to be honest, Sky Ranch isn’t unique to Tagaytay because there’s also a Sky Ranch in Baguio and Pampanga.

But what makes this different is the spectacular view, especially if you ride the 63-meter tall Ferris wheel called Sky Eye . Sky Ranch is perched on the ridge so it really has a breathtaking view of the Taal Lake and volcano.

Sky Ranch Tagaytay

Aside from the view, tourists are also attracted by the rides here like the Double Decker Carousel , Drop Tower , Super Viking , and Log Coaster . There are also carnival games that you can play like hook a duck, basketball shooting, lobster pot, and ring toss. They’re all fun to play, but unfortunately, none of our team won anything. But that’s okay, everyone still enjoyed the games!

A ride-all-you-can day pass is also available if you want to experience all of Sky Ranch Tagaytay’s attractions. You can book this in advance online! And we actually recommend doing so, because this day pass is only available online and must be availed a day before you plan to visit.

People’s Park in the Sky

People’s Park in the Sky is another popular spot known for its gorgeous view of the Taal Lake and volcano. It was previously known as Palace in the Sky , which was commissioned to host US President Ronald Reagan during his supposed visit in 1983. However, the then-US President’s visit was canceled and the construction of the mansion halted.

People's Park in the Sky

While its original purpose was never met, it has been turned into an urban park and view deck . There’s also a garden, a small chapel, souvenir shops, and food stalls. However, there are many areas of the park that need major upkeep and improvement. But if all you need is a stunning view, you surely won’t get disappointed.

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM Entrance Fee: P50/head Location: Tagaytay – Calamba Road, Barangay Dapdap West, Tagaytay City, Cavite Getting There: From Olivarez/Rotonda, ride a jeepney with the signage “People’s Park”. That jeepney terminates at the jumping-off point to the park. From the entrance gate, it’s an uphill climb to the mansion.

Local Sweet Delicacies

If you’re getting tired going around and you need some sweets to boost your energy, don’t worry because there are A LOT of delicacies to try here in Tagaytay. One could argue that you cannot make your trip home without trying the most popular delicacy, which is buko pie ! You’ll find numerous pasalubong shops around the city where you can get this coconut pastry. Here are some of them:

Cecilia's Buco Pie

  • Cecilia’s Buco Pie and Pasalubong
  • Carmela’s Banana Cakes
  • Rowena’s Pasalubong and Restaurant
  • Amira’s Buco Tart Haus
  • Colette’s Buko Pie and Pasalubong

For us, our number one favorite is the Ube Buko Pie from Cecilia’s. The sweetness of the ube complements the mild taste of the coconut very well.

And speaking of ube, the popular Good Shepherd Ube Halaya jam that is a popular pasalubong item from Baguio is also available here in Tagaytay! You can get it from Bahay Pastulan , which is also operated by the Good Shepherd’s sisters. It’s located along Santa Rosa – Tagaytay Road in Barangay Francisco, Tagaytay City.

And if you need something to drink, try the signature carabao milk from Mr. Moo , also sitting along Tagaytay-Sta. Rosa Road. They also have cow’s milk with different varieties and flavors. Our team likes the melon flavor the most.

Note: The pasalubong shops mentioned above have many branches dotting the map of Tagaytay EXCEPT FOR Good Shepherd’s Bahay Pastulan and Mr. Moo. Here’s how to get there: Getting to Bahay Pastulan/Mr. Moo: Ride a jeepney bound for People’s Park and get off at Tagaytay Econo Hotel at the junction of Tagaytay-Sta. Rosa Road and Tagaytay-Calamba Road. Charter a tricycle to either Bahay Pastulan Store/Good Shepherd or Mr. Moo.

Of course, when it comes to food you should try in Tagaytay, bulalo is on top of the list. And when we talk about bulalo, you can’t go wrong with Mahogany Market . Yes, it’s an actual public market. On the ground floor, you will be welcomed by stalls selling raw meat like pork and beef. There are also seafood and other proteins available.

Bulalo - Mahogany Market

But when you go up to the second floor, you’ll find the food court. Here, you’ll find various food stalls serving similar menus. They have lechon kawali , chicharon bulaklak , crablets, and of course, bulalo ! It’s honestly hard to choose which stall to order from since their prices are comparable. And compared to other restaurants, you can get bulalo for much cheaper here, but the taste would not disappoint either.

Opening Hours: Daily, 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM Location: 10 Mahogany Avenue, Barangay Kaybagal South (Poblacion), Tagaytay City, Cavite Parking Fee: P20-40 (depending on the location) Getting There: If you’re coming from Manila, board a bus bound for Tagaytay or Nasugbu at Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX). Get off at Tagaytay Hall of Justice along Mahogany Avenue. Then, walk towards Mahogany Market behind the Tagaytay Hall of Justice building.

Fantasy World

Fantasy World is another destination outside Tagaytay that’s often added to Tagaytay itineraries. There’s a huge chance you’ve come across pictures of Fantasy World online especially its giant medieval castle which was supposed to be the centerpiece of a huge theme park that was planned to be like Disneyland. Unfortunately, the project didn’t push through.

Fantasy World

We’re not exactly sure if the term for it is “abandoned” because for a while, management actually allowed tourists into the park for photoshoots. As of December 2021, visitors can now onl drop by the front gate or view the park from a viewpoint along the road instead.

TIP! Whether you’re coming to or from Fantasy World, you’ll pass by GOLDEN VIEW Grill Café & Restaurant . It doesn’t look much from the outside, but it also has a good view and great food. They serve mostly Batangan dishes including Batangas goto and tableya chocolate which is served with suman.

Location: Diokno Highway/Payapa Road, Barangay Masayang, Lemery, Batangas Getting There: From Olivarez/Rotonda, ride a bus or jeepney to Boundary (Cavite-Batangas boundary). From there, ride another jeepney bound for Lemery and ask the driver to drop you off at the road leading to the Fantasy World entrance. You can also charter a tricycle to take you there.

While we’re still in Batangas, why not go to the Caleruega Chapel as well? Although located in Nasugbu, it is also often included in Tagaytay itineraries because it is easily accessible from Tagaytay.

Caleruega

The church complex was originally built as a venue for retreat and contemplation, but it has evolved into one of the choice destinations for wedding and prenup photoshoots . Caleruega is surrounded by relaxing gardens and hills and has a nice view of Mt. Batulao.

Aside from being a wedding venue, mass is also regularly held in the chapel. It’s also a usual Visita Iglesia stop in Batangas.

Opening Hours: Daily, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM Public Sunday Mass Schedule: 10:30 AM Entrance Fee: P30/head Location: Calleruega Road, Barangay Kaylaway, Nasugbu, Batangas Getting There: Ride a jeepney bound for Nasugbu at Olivarez/Rotonda and tell the driver to drop you off at Hillcrest/Evercrest. From there, take a tricycle and tell the driver to take you to Caleruega.

Tierra de Maria (Our Lady of Manaoag)

Tierra de Maria

Tierra de Maria , also known as Our Lady of Manaoag , is a chapel in Tagaytay. It occupies a small area, but it is known for its 50-foot statue of Virgin Mary. When you enter the chapel, there are sections where you can write a note or prayer requests or even a prayer of thanks. You can post it on the wall or put it in drop boxes. If you want to take home souvenirs, you can check out the store by the entrance.

Opening Hours: Daily, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Location: Tagaytay – Calamba Road, Barangay Sungay East, Tagaytay City, Cavite Getting There: From Olivarez/Rotonda, ride a jeepney bound for Calamba or the one with the signage “People’s Park” or just ask the driver to drop you off at Tierra de Maria/Our Lady of Manaoag. The chapel is located near Tagaytay Picnic Grove.

Puzzle Mansion

Puzzle Mansion

Puzzle Mansion is a private museum of the family of the collector Georgina Gil-Lacuna. It was opened in 2012 with over 1,000 puzzles and has been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle collection from 2012 to 2017 . At present, there are about 2,000 puzzles housed in the museum with the oldest dating back to the ‘80s.

Opening Hours : Wednesday to Sunday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Monday to Wednesday, CLOSED Entrance Fee : P100/head Location: Cuadra Street, Barangay Asisan, Tagaytay City, Cavite Parking Fee: FREE Getting There : From Olivarez/Rotonda, take a jeepney bound for Nasugbu or Alfonso, then tell the driver to drop you off at the spot in Barangay Asisan, where you can hail a tricycle to the Puzzle Mansion.

Museo Orlina

If you like museums, you can check out Museo Orlina , named after the artist and founder Ramon Orlina, who is known for his iconic glass sculptures.

Museo Orlina

This museum opened in 2014 and showcases Orlina’s masterpieces as well as works of other artists, especially sculptors. The main highlight here is the “ARCANIUM XIX, Paradise Gained” , which is a replica of one of his masterpieces. The original piece is displayed in the Atrium of the National Museum of Natural History.

Opening Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM; Monday, CLOSED Entrance Fee: Regular, P150; Students, Seniors, and PWDs with valid I.D., P120 Location: Hollywood Street, Hollywood Subdivision, Barangay Tolentino East, Tagaytay City, Cavite Getting There: If coming from Olivarez/Rotonda, ride a jeepney bound for Calamba or the one with the signage “People’s Park”. Ask the driver to drop you off at the intersection or at Tagaytay Econo Hotel. From there, walk to Museo Orlina.

Visit the Nasugbu, Batangas page for all information on Nasugbu.

Nasugbu is one of the most frequented destinations for beach bums. Aside from the typical swim-all-day and bask-under-the-sun-for-a-golden-tan weekend, there is an assortment of things one can do to enjoy the fine-looking coastline of Nasugbu.

You can have a short trek on the Twin Islands , go diving and snorkelling on Fortune Island or simply get pleasure from the shores of Natipuan and Tali Beach .

Want to try something that’s both challenging and exciting? Go skimboarding.

Wiki says “skimboarding (or skimming) is a boardsport in which a skimboard (a smaller counterpart to a surfboard without fins) is used to glide across the water’s surface. Unlike surfing, skimboarding begins on the beach by dropping the board onto the thin wash of previous waves. Skimboarders use their momentum to skim out to breaking waves, which they then catch back into shore in a manner similar to surfing” .

Skimboarding became a popular activity on the shores of Nasugbu where the waves are considered perfect for the boardsport. If you’ve been wanting to learn how to surf but scared of being engulfed by big waves, then you can try skimming instead. Oops, don’t belittle the adrenaline rush you can benefit from skimboarding. This may appear too easy to do. Well, akala mo lang yun.

It was the eve of my birthday. My friends and I were in Boracay to celebrate that special day and I was so determined to learn the sport since I know that it is quite popular in the island (which by the World’s Best Island for 2012 of international magazine, Travel + Leisure). Earlier that day, I saw a young native who was walking by the beach carrying a skimboard. I ask if he can teach me but he said I have to pay him. Okay, fine.

But we were off to do helmet diving that morning so I asked if I can meet him on that same area again later in the afternoon. He agreed and I was so giddy for the afternoon to come. It was around 5pm when I saw Junior again (I forgot how old he is but I know he’s still a grader at that time) carrying a makeshift skimboard (just completely flat wooden board without the grip).

Usual rate for renting a skimboard is P150 per hour and that includes basic tutorial. Because I was a novice, Junior thought me the “run, drop, slide” method also known as the “sideslipping” method . I had to learn to skim first on the thinnest part of the receding water pero hello, akala ko madali lang! Akala ko simpleng pag-slide lang pero hindi lang basta ganun.

Because what we used was a makeshift skimboard, hindi ko naisip na ang bigat nya at nakakangalay kada tapon! Junior was the one dropping the skimboard while I run then ride onto the board to make it slide just in time for the waves to totally break out. Eh isang oras kong nirentahan yung board and most of the time, yung bata yung taga tapon ng board.

Kaya lang parang medyo na-restrict ang skimboarding for a time sa Boracay. Not sure of whatever reason pero hindi naman kami hinuli ng Boracay rangers. Haha.

I was even more elated when I learned that I don’t need to fly to Boracay when I can actually do skimboarding here in Batangas . Parang sa Lemery nga din may mga dumadayong skimboarders. But I have to invest first on a good skimboard para hindi na ko rerenta palagi. Soon!

During summer, an annual Nasugbu Skimfest Competition is being held in town. The event gathers skimboarders from different parts of Luzon where the winners get to compete for the national level.

The waves of Nasugbu and the welcoming town folks are two reasons why skimboarding enthusiasts always have the best time in the Western tip of Batangas.

Skimboarding? It’s more fun in Nasugbu, Batangas!
