The 2024 WOW List: 96 Top Local Fixers in Countries Worldwide

wow travel services

The WOW List is a collection of exceptionally knowledgeable and well-connected trip planners around the world. They have been rigorously road-tested, based on my decades of experience as a travel journalist and based on the latest trip reviews from travelers who used my WOW approach to ensure an extraordinary trip. In 2023 they quickly found solutions to the travel complications and disruption that arose: They rerouted travelers away from wildfires and floods, kept them cool and comfy amid extreme heat, helped them bypass unprecedented tourist crowds and lines, restored whole days of sightseeing missed because of flight cancellations, and lessened the impact of hotels’ sky-high prices, understaffing, and skimpflation. We know they did this because of your trip reviews . We continue to monitor trips and update The WOW List in real time.

HOW TO GET A WOW TRIP 1. Find the right local fixer for your needs below. 2. Click their CONTACT button and share the details of your dream trip via my questionnaire. 3. Done! The local expert will reach out to you directly and quickly.

START WITH MY QUESTIONNAIRE • That’s how you get VIP treatment and these WOW benefits . • It’s how the WOW Lister knows that I sent you and that you will be reviewing your trip. Your trip reviews determine who remains on The WOW List. • It’s the only way I can advise you and monitor your trip from the most important moment—the conception and initial design. • It’s the only way your trip will count toward a WOW Moment .

WOW TRIP COSTS AND STYLE What these local fixers do is custom-tailor a private itinerary exactly to your trip goals and travel style, get you special access to iconic sights, and mastermind all the trip logistics so that you don’t have to. Trips start at about $10K to $15K, depending on your destination and timing.

Japan Japanese society relies heavily on personal connections to unlock doors. Japan is also bracingly expensive, with many of the loveliest ryokans and guest houses costing upwards of $1,000 per night (although that does include an extravagant dinner). And because the number of savvy guides with exceptional access is limited, they can command high fees. If you are seeking the right bespoke trip-planning specialist who can deliver the best that Japan has to offer, we can point you toward your smartest options.

Bahamas and Caribbean Yacht Charters Picture sparkling seas, the waves lapping at your boat, a captain who knows every secret snorkeling spot, toes-in-the-sand beach bars where you can stop for a drink, fabulously fresh seafood—prepared by your private chef—to enjoy at night…. All that can be yours when you charter your own vessel. But of the hundreds that are based in the Caribbean and the Bahamas, which to choose? And how do you know that its crew can make the magic happen, and that its water toys are up to snuff? We know yacht-charter experts who spend a good portion of every year inspecting boats and their crews to find the very best. Tell us what you have in mind, and we can match you to the right specialist for your specific needs.

Yes, you can still travel to Cuba. Legally and privately. The Cuba experts we know have worked in the country for years and are well connected to artists, musicians, historians, TV personalities, and the best privately-owned boutique B&Bs, casas particulares , and paladares . They can have you learning the secrets of a perfect mojito from a local bartender, enjoying a night out at a pop-up jazz club, bird-watching on a day trip into the countryside, and strolling Havana with a former architect or journalist (who now earns more as a private guide).

England and the British Isles Travelers bound for the United Kingdom and Ireland seek a broad array of experiences for which there is a broad array of sources. Do you need a castle in the countryside for a 50th birthday party or a manor home for a family reunion near the university where your kid is in college? A week of hiking in the Cotswolds or meeting the most interesting local characters in the hidden pockets of Ireland? The more specific you can be about your trip goals, the better we can direct you to the right fixer for your needs.

Greece Certain Greek islands, especially those visited by cruise ships, can be a mosh pit in high season, and the logistics of getting between islands can be surprisingly complicated. The right expert can steer you to the most reliable ferry operators, ensure there’s a taxi to pick you up at the pier, even arrange for private boat rides to secret islands. There are hundreds of Greek islands to choose from, of course—each with its own unique character—and the right expert can design an itinerary with just the right combo of ancient history, modern culture, near-empty beaches, sleepy villages, pulsating nightlife, or whatever it is that you want most. Tell us via the button below, and we’ll help as best we can.

Iceland Iceland has awesome landscapes and unusual adventure activities, from volcano diving to geothermal-pool hopping. But it is surprisingly expensive, and soaring tourism has caused demand—for accommodations, activities, all-terrain vehicles, glacier adventure guides, etc.—to outpace supply, driving prices even higher. What’s more, the country’s tourism infrastructure is geared to mass-market group tours. For the right local fixer to deliver a private, custom-tailored itinerary with unique experiences, click on the “Ask Wendy” button below.

What if travel could change you.

It can. It did for me. I continue to travel; collecting amazing moments on every continent and in 72 countries over the past 40ish years.

Maybe that’s why you travel, too? Anthony Bourdain said, “It’s never the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre you remember for the rest of your life.” He was right. It’s those moments. Those memories.

I dreamed up WOW! Travel Club to create global travel experiences that might open your eyes and your heart a little wider. You might return home more fulfilled then when you left.  You might become a little more of the you  you always wanted to be. Without having to backpack across Asia for eight months like I did many years ago, chasing a better version of my self .

The WOW! Travel Club in 20 seconds:

The WOW! Travel Club connects us. You join simply by signing up. It’s free. We share what we know about travel; tips, gear,  airlines/airports/airfares, food, destinations … all things travel. Information is shared by email, webinar , Facebook Live events, even over the phone if you want to call us. And we’ll also tell you about our trips. All in the spirit of trust and community. No pressure from us, ever, and no grumps need apply. (Not a grump? Apply at the bottom of this page.)

The WOW! Journeys

Sure, we’ll include the iconic monuments … but we’re after the “wow”  moments . The experiences . The connections .

  • We create opportunities to connect – as authentically as possible – with the people of the place . . . to cheer for the Galway hurling team on a sunny Sunday afternoon in western Ireland.
  • We give you “space” to create your own memorable moments . . . to sit down on a Hanoi park bench next to a kind-hearted Vietnamese lady who will cool you off with her fan; . . . these  are the spontaneous, synchronistic moments you can expect from the WOW! Travel Club.

With WOW!, it’s personal

  • Every communication to our members is designed to add value, to educate, and/or to share a story from our experience. Sure, we’ll tell you about upcoming trips, but we’ll never exploit our relationship with you.
  • Every journey is loosely, but lovingly, scripted. We’re not a conglomerate promoting a calendar of back-to-back-to-back trips. We plan only a handful of carefully-chosen journeys every year. You could call us boutique – or bespoke.
  • You’re a name – never a customer code. WOW! journeys are escorted by one of the company principals: Marilyn Murphy or Gabriel Haigazian. You’re not handed off to a part-time tour leader.

With WOW!, relationships are paramount

  • The CTP Group (our corporate division) has deep roots – it was founded back in 1977. Our employees have lengthy tenure (everyone loves working here!). We enjoy trusted vendor relationships that go back decades. And our customers – once they’ve traveled with WOW! – come back over and over and over again. We call ’em “WOWees.”

WOW! Travel Small Group Travel

We also have plenty of surprises slipped into every trip. Who doesn’t love a thoughtful pillow gift? Or stopping for ice cream on a hot afternoon? It’s often the little things that produce a “WOW!” moment.

A bit more about why we’re different…

Small Group.    Unless we’ve chartered a small ship in Croatia, our average group size is about 16 guests.

Group travel for people who don’t like travel groups.    Our guests tend to be well traveled. They choose WOW! because we often go to less-trampled destinations that might be intimidating (Africa, India, Patagonia, Morocco, etc). They know we’ll avoid the tourist traps and do it a bit different. They trust that we’ll go beneath the surface to uncover a destination’s true treasures.

We curate our travelers as carefully as we curate the itinerary.     No whiners, prima-donnas, or know-it-alls.  We don’t want to travel with them either!  WOWees cross all spectrums: couples, singles, solo travelers, siblings, LGBTQ, extroverts/introverts, bungy jumpers/those who prefer to watch from the sidelines. All are culturally curious, respectful, responsible, welcoming, and fun-loving. Many deep, rich friendships are made on a WOW journey.

In a nutshell: Something magical happens when like-minded people explore the world with an open heart and mind. Please, come along and discover for yourself!

Happy travels,

Marilyn Murphy, CQ (“creative queen”)

Join us for “WOW” experiences like these…

. . . Hordes of tourists flow through the exit gates of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World – just as we’re entering the ancient city of Ephesus. It’s right before closing time, and the UNESCO World Heritage site is practically empty! Without the crowds, our small group can almost hear the footsteps of Marc Antony walking hand-in-hand with Cleopatra. We follow two handsome Roman “centurions” along Curates Street, through Hercules Gate and into the ancient Odeon theater. We’re startled to see ten tuxedoed musicians seated in the orchestra pit. We sit on the marble seats where aristocratic Ephesians sat almost 2,000 years ago to discuss governmental issues and listen to concerts. And, as the shadows lengthen on this balmy summer evening, the chamber orchestra begins to play “A Little Night Music” from Mozart’s famous composition … just for us.

WOW! Travel Small Group Travel

. . . Leaning against a building on the shady side of the street in Havana, I watch four young boys playing baseball. Wielding a stick, each batter takes a mighty swing at a crude cloth ball lobbed by the pitcher. I soak in the surroundings and delight in their unadulterated joy.

Finally, a hit! The ball plops on the street just a few yards in front of me and a skinny, shirtless boy races to retrieve it. Seeing me standing there, he hesitates, pushing his wire-rimmed glasses to the bridge of his nose. They sit crooked on his face.

I smile and practice my limited Spanish, “Hola! Como se llama?”

Shyly, he replies, “Rodolfo.”

I reach into my bag and pull out a brand new tennis ball. He hesitates, but only slightly, grabbing the ball just before his friends rush on the scene. Predictably, there is a scuffle. They freeze at the sound of a stern male voice. From a doorway, a man admonishes the boys in that universal, “mind your manners” tone.

WOW! Travel Small Group Travel

. . . We’re super stoked to have landed at the “adventure capital of the world”: Queenstown, New Zealand. We’re looking forward to getting settled in at the luxurious Millbrook Resort but our bus has pulled over to the side of the road while our driver and tour guide confer in hushed tones. “Ladies and gentlemen, please get off the bus. You can leave all your things here.” Dutifully, we climb down and wait expectantly for an explanation. “I have a surprise for you!” he announces, pointing toward the river. “It’s just over there.”

We scramble down the riverbank and are excited to see a candy-apple red Shotover Jetboat waiting at the sandy beach.

WOW! This is gonna be fun!

We don our matching red safety vests and meet our charming Kiwi driver, Dylan. And then we’re off – racing through the narrow canyons and holding on tight when Dylan does the occasional 360-degree spin. He finally stops at a wide section of river – giving us an opportunity to catch our breath and take in the jaw-dropping scenery all around us.

There’s a gasp from the back of the boat, and we turn around to see Dylan pointing at a dark creature emerging from the depths. A moment later it becomes clear: the “creature” is a scuba diver – holding up a bottle of Cloudy Bay Brut from one of New Zealand’s finest wineries.

We pop the cork and share a toast to this extraordinary moment. We were right – this is gonna be fun!

I am thankful Sasha G

I am thankful Sasha G. for spending with me time and giving me the best options in my complicated trip to Ukraine. Very thoughtful and besides the best prices Sasha carefully searched for the most comfortable flights with minimum layovers. I would recommend this company and particularly, of course, the agent who I dealt with -Sasha Gardner to look for the best air-tickets on a market. My appreciation to the professionalism and friendliness which makes trips and search for tickets painless. Natalia Flaherty, Florida,

Worst holiday experience!!

I had a holiday with Wowcher and Wowtravel in Turkey and it was a huge disappointment!!!! They charged an additional 199 euros for food etc. as a hidden fee, I had to find out about this on the spot! I had no choice on the food whatsoever as we didn't stop anywhere else but restaurants on the motorway with set menus massively overpriced. They took us to all the touristy places and expected us to spend money, the sales assistants were following us around aggressively pushing sales. The hotels were in the middle of nowhere and they dropped us off at 6 pm, leaving us nothing to do but watching TV. My worst holiday ever, don't recommend them at all!! After contacting the company and waiting around I've been sent away with a 'sorry' which is unheard of!

JORDAN is wonderful

JORDAN is wonderful. In this day and age customer service is very rare. Jordan goes above and beyond to help in any way he can. He is very patient, I have hearing problems but he did not let that deter him in helping. I messed up my husbands name on the airline ticket, and Jordan is trying to help me fix it. He doesn't have to do that. He called me yesterday, on Thanksgiving-who does that-answer, NO ONE but Jordan. He is such an asset to WOW, I have already recommended WOW and Jordan to work associates and my neighbor who are planning to travel in the near future. Thank you so much Jordan.

Amtrak service between New York, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia has resumed to normal after downed overhead powerlines between Newark, New Jersey and New York's Penn Station disrupted train services between Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon, an Amtrak spokesperson said.

"Full scheduled service resumed earlier this morning," Jason Abrams, an Amtrak spokesperson said in an email to USA TODAY Thursday afternoon.

Amtrak and NJ Transit services were impacted shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday due to downed wires just outside of Newark near Kearny, the location of the Portal Bridge and the construction of its replacement, NorthJersey.com, part of the USA TODAY Network reported . However, the wire issues had nothing to do with the bridge or the construction, Amtrak said.

"A signal wire came into contact with the catenary, causing a blowout," Abrams told USA TODAY. "The signal line from the catenary wire fell to the ground."

An investigation into how the two wires came into contact is ongoing, Abrams said.

The power issue caused multiple Amtrak trains between New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. to be suspended Wednesday and while services resumed early Thursday, travelers were warned to "expect extensive residual delays due to speed restrictions and rail congestion." Trains were delayed up to two hours Thursday, according to Amtrak alerts.

"Customers with reservations on trains that are being modified will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day," Amtrak had said in its advisory.

Amtrak said it was waiving fees for changing reservations on affected lines and customers should reach out to contact its reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL.

NJ Transit also affected

The wire mishap also affected NJ Transit that connects Manhattan with multiple cities in New Jersey.

The commuter service, in an update shortly after 1:30 p.m. Thursday, alerted passengers to expect up to 30-minute delays on multiple routes due to Amtrak's overhead wire issues .

NJ Transit also requested customers to refer to their travel advisory while making plans.

Start Your Summer Travel Planning With AI: Do's and Don'ts

The summer of AI travel is nearly upon us. You can let artificial intelligence do some of the legwork for you.

wow travel services

Rilee Smith loves a good book.

And so when the travel blogger visits a new city, she typically checks out the local library.

Now, after taking a class on ChatGPT , she's able to personalize trips like never before.

By telling the generative AI tool she wanted a travel guide to Boston to be focused on libraries, museums and bookstores, even the restaurants it suggested — like the Map Room Lounge at the Boston Public Library — had a bookish theme.

"It puts everything through that lens, which allows you to narrow in and get a tip that is so tailor-made to you in a way that you don't get if you just do general research on the internet," Smith said.

AI Atlas tag

For the first time ever, we're approaching a summer in which these bespoke trips could be the norm thanks to widespread availability of generative AI tools like ChatGPT , Claude , Copilot and Gemini . (For more on generative AI tools, along with all the latest AI news, tips and explainers, see CNET's AI Atlas guide.)

While just 6% of us used gen AI to make trip plans in 2023 , nearly 40% are interested in trying it out in 2024, according to data from travel site Expedia .

Since the technology first burst onto the scene in November 2022 in the form of ChatGPT, gen AI tools have helped expand our creative horizons by writing poetry in an instant, bringing the visuals we have inside our heads to life in a matter of seconds and translating languages in real time. As we increasingly ask gen AI to do more for us, it's no wonder travel planning, which often includes at least some dull research, is emerging as another use case.

Gen AI is helpful for coming up with travel ideas, narrowing down destinations, sketching out plans and staying within budget. It can also save a lot of time spent in researching flights, hotels and restaurants. But even though gen AI can be a tremendous digital travel agent, it's best used primarily as a starting point given limitations like its training data — unless it integrates results from the open internet, it only knows so much up to a certain point in time — and its propensity for hallucinations , or to simply make things up.

How do I use AI to plan a trip?

In addition to mainstream gen AI tools, travel platforms like Booking.com, Expedia, Kayak, Tripadvisor and CNET's sister site Guide.com have their own AI-powered bots accessible via apps and/or microsites that pull in data like pricing and reviews from their databases to help you plan your trip.

"It's so early, and these tools … there's a new one every couple of days, and I think one has to be a bit experimental there and see what works for your own use case," said Matthias Keller, chief scientist at Kayak.

If you're curious about using gen AI to make summer travel plans, you've come to the right place. What follows is a list of do's and don'ts when it comes to tapping into the power of gen AI.

You should use AI to…

Quickly gather information.

While traditional search can require multiple queries to source information about an upcoming trip, generative AI allows users to ask for everything all at once.

So, for example, if you're traveling to a city in a country you've never visited before, you can ask all of your questions about transportation, currency and language. You can even do it for multiple places at once.

"It's really great at just getting tons of information for you in one portal," Smith said.

Google's new search experience, AI Overviews , taps into Gemini's multistep reasoning to do more advanced research on your behalf. Google teased a trip-planning component at Google's I/O developer event last week. It's expected to be available later this year.

A screenshot of an exchange with Expedia's AI travel assistant, Romie.

Narrow down options

If you don't have a specific destination in mind, generative AI is useful to help figure out where to go.

By telling a chatbot, "I want to go somewhere warm," and/or, "I want to go sit on a beach," it can provide inspiration and then help you narrow down options based on factors like budget, dates and availability.

"From an inspiration, ideation perspective, I think these trip planners [like Booking.com's AI Trip Planner] are really, really good," said Ben Harrell, managing director of the US at Booking.com.

It's also helpful in narrowing down options if you're having trouble deciding between multiple locations.

A related tip: Perhaps like human interaction itself, the more you put into a conversation with a chatbot, the more you'll get out of it. And when it comes to vacation-related queries, details matter. So once you've chosen a location, you should share details about yourself and your travel companions, as well as what you want to do — and any other preferences like nonstop flights or vegetarian meals.

"The quality of the result is naturally going to be very different if you say, 'I want to go to South America,' versus saying, 'I want to go to Brazil. I want to go into the jungle. I'm really into high-end dining' and all that," Keller noted.

Build itineraries

Make the most of your time away by asking generative AI to build your itinerary. You can ask to include specific sites, as well as for suggestions. Once again, the more detailed you are, the better the results are likely to be. Tools like Tripadvisor's AI Trip Builder ask travelers for their destination, dates, companions and potential activities to generate day-by-day itineraries that can be edited and saved.

Google suggests a query like, "plan me a three-day trip to Philadelphia that's all about history," to provide suggestions for attractions and dining, as well as potential flights and hotels.

Personalize your trip

Arguably one of the best uses for generative AI in travel is personalization. And if there is something you're passionate about, like art or food, or if you're simply looking for family-friendly travel tips, gen AI is a great tool.

Let's say you're planning a trip to Spain and want to see the work of architect Antoni Gaudi.

"You could say, 'I have a day in Barcelona. My priorities are seeing as much as of Gaudi's architecture as possible and eating some delicious tapas. Please design a full-day itinerary based on those two priorities,'" Smith said.

You can also ask gen AI to assume the role of an art historian who specializes in Gaudi when pulling together plans.

"It gives you a different lens than just, 'Here's some things that you should go and do,'" Smith added.

Supplement your own knowledge of a place

Even if you're returning to a familiar destination, gen AI can help you discover new sites and maybe even some hidden gems.

When Harrell returned to Amsterdam with his family, he asked an AI tool for suggestions.

"It proposed really almost all the things that I had planned to do and a couple of others as well," he said. "And I went, 'Oh, that's actually a really good idea. I'd forgotten about that or didn't know about that.'"

If you're traveling on a budget, gen AI tools are useful for combing through listings to find the best deals for your trip.

They can also suggest alternate destinations with better prices or different travel dates if you have your heart set on a particular place.

Figure out the best time to go

If your dates are flexible, gen AI tools can help you figure out the best time to travel. That includes both when it's cheapest to go to a specific destination, as well as simply the optimal time to visit, which can pull in details like weather and special events, like, say, the best time to see cherry blossoms in Japan.

Streamline reading reviews

With gen AI, you don't have to read a bunch of individual reviews. Instead, tools like Tripadvisor's will summarize hotel reviews in terms of location, atmosphere and room quality.

Make custom GPTs

More tech-savvy travelers (and subscribers to ChatGPT Plus) can even make their own custom GPTs . These apps allow anyone to create a tailored version of the chatbot for a specific purpose.

In the ChatGPT app store , you can access GPTs from the likes of Kayak and tap into all of its travel data as you make your plans. (Google recently announced its own version of this personalizable chatbot experience called Gems , which will roll out over the coming months.)

"I started using that from the get-go to really see what it could do and it's really pretty amazing," Smith said.

So, for example, if you wanted to go to Europe on a budget in June, it will suggest options based on your parameters.

You can also plug in your itinerary details to your custom GPT, including flight and hotel confirmations and then use it like "a little travel agent in your pocket," Smith said.

So, for example, you could ask, "Based on the hotel I'm staying at tonight, what are four Italian restaurants nearby that are worth checking out? Or what time do I have to check out of my hotel on Thursday?'" she added.

But gen AI isn't perfect.

You should not use AI as...

Your only source of information.

While gen AI is a great resource for coming up with ideas and saving time, you should never use gen AI alone.

Before you even book your trip, double-check all-important details with verified sources. (Chatbot functionality is typically limited to inspiration and research, so you'll still likely have to book your own flights, hotels and rental cars.)

"I wouldn't have taken the full list of activities that the AI trip planner recommended to me and just said, 'OK, that's exactly what I'm going to do. Great,'" Harrell said.

Instead, you still have to invest some time in research to ensure its suggestions are valid and to avoid any potential disappointments.

In a study of AI-generated itineraries, SEO firm SEO Travel found 24% recommended going to at least one restaurant or attraction that was no longer open. The study found gen AI also recommended fictional places , as well as pricey hotels and restaurants that are generally out of reach for most travelers.

"I think the risk with AI trip planner tools is they are all still very new and growing and progressing sort of like GPS in the very early days," Harrell said. "It behooves us to check and verify and make sure we're comfortable and we're getting the right experience that we expect."

A source of up-to-date information

You must also never rely on gen AI for up-to-date information or information about the future. That's because of those aforementioned knowledge cutoffs, which means models' training data includes information only up to a certain point in time.

OpenAI's latest model, GPT-4o , was trained on data that's relevant up to October 2023 . GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo were trained up to December 2023. Google Gemini's knowledge cutoff is " early 2023 ." Perplexity AI, a gen AI chatbot built on ChatGPT-3.5, connects to the internet to pull and cite information from sites like Reddit and X, which CNET's Imad Kahn says  gives it an advantage over some competitors. (OpenAI recently announced its own partnership with Reddit to pull in real-time data from the platform.)

"I still don't think that ChatGPT is going to know when the next Taylor Swift concert is," Keller said. "All this information is just not there. And so you may get some information back, but it may then be a hallucination."

That's also true for opening hours for restaurants and attractions and holiday closures.

SEO Travel found over half (52%) of AI-generated itineraries suggested visiting an attraction or restaurant outside of its operating hours, such as the Museo del Prado at 9:30 a.m. (it opens at 10 a.m.) and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum at 8:30 p.m. (it closes at 7 p.m.).

"It doesn't have that real-time access to information in the way that Google [search] does," Smith said. "So I will use it to find places, but my tip would always be to check those dates and opening hours against the actual travel time of your trip."

Another weakness: weather and maps. It's best to use alternate sources for these details as well.

Gen AI tools aren't up to date about safety and security either because in part they aren't aware of current events. And so you can ask about overall safety considerations in a given location, but you should double-check with other reliable sources.

Now if only AI could do the actual traveling part for us so we could enjoy our vacations that much sooner — and with even less stress.

Help! Our Cruise Operator Went Bankrupt and We Are Out $17,905.

A couple purchased an Arabian Sea voyage, but Vantage, the cruise company, went under. Their travel insurance was supposed to cover financial default, but the claim was repeatedly denied.

An illustration of a dollar bill folded up to resemble a boat sinking in a whirlpool in a sea of green.

By Seth Kugel

Dear Tripped Up,

In September 2022, I booked a 17-day Arabian Sea cruise through Vantage Travel Services to celebrate my 80th birthday with my wife. The cruise was to set sail in October 2023. I used my credit card to leave a $2,000 deposit and paid the remaining $17,905 shortly afterward by bank transfer. I also bought the Worldwide Trip Protector plan from Travel Insured International (for $1,954), in part because it covered financial default and bankruptcy of cruise lines. Vantage then canceled the cruise and offered me an alternative date I could not make; I also declined their offer of credit and asked for a refund, which they agreed to. But no refund ever came, and they stopped answering the phone. My credit card returned the $2,000, and I filed an insurance claim for $17,905. It was denied, as was my first appeal. Then Vantage filed for bankruptcy, and my second appeal was denied too. The reasons given by the insurer were outrageous. They cited a vague parenthetical phrase in the policy’s bankruptcy clause, claiming I wasn’t covered because I purchased the cruise directly from the cruise line (rather than, say, through a travel adviser). Then they said my policy lapsed when I canceled the trip. But I did not cancel; Vantage did. I also filed a complaint with the New York State Department of Financial Services, which was rejected. Can you help? Michael, Smithtown, N.Y.

Dear Michael,

When Boston-based Vantage filed for bankruptcy last year, it owed thousands of customers a total of $108 million for cruises and other travel products they had paid for but never received. The company’s former owner is facing lawsuits in New York and Pennsylvania. But you had purchased an insurance policy to cover just such a risk, a smart move. Or so you thought until the insurance company, Travel Insured International, denied your claim and then used exasperating logic to fend off your two appeals, first interpreting the policy’s financial default and bankruptcy clause in a maddening way and then twisting the meaning of the word “cancel.”

You made a few mistakes as well — most notably, by making a claim based on a financial default that had not yet happened. But after speaking with law professors, insurance experts and competing insurance companies, I believe Travel Insured International was wrong, at least by the time of your second appeal, and should pay up.

What does it have to say for itself? For nearly five months, Travel Insured International and its parent company, Crum & Forster, did not respond to my detailed inquiries. Days before publication, however, a spokeswoman, Amy Whilldin, sent the following statement:

“The claim was properly considered, and the correct determination was made based on the facts of this claim, which was to the satisfaction of both the New York Department of Financial Services and the New York State attorney general.”

Ms. Whilldin is correct about the state’s financial services department . An examiner with the department, which regulates the insurance industry, rejected your complaint. “After a review of the policy language," he wrote, “we do not find they are acting in an arbitrary or capricious manner,” referring to Travel Insured International. I disagree with that determination, as we are about to get into.

But the attorney general’s office was not satisfied. You had complained to its Department of Consumer Frauds and Protection, and they did not receive a response from the company. “Despite our repeated efforts,” an employee wrote, “they have failed to respond.” The letter goes on to recommend you consider suing the company.

I have a better idea. You should file a formal grievance with Travel Insured International, which under your policy allows you to submit new evidence, and if that fails even argue your case in person. (You told me you are not interested in a third option, to accept travel credits under the conditions offered by the Australian company that bought Vantage’s assets.)

In the meantime, your story provides great lessons on how travelers should choose the appropriate travel insurance policy, and what can go wrong even when they do.

In your initial claim to Travel Insured International, filed in late 2022, you cited Vantage’s “very poor record” in refunding its customers and your “assumption that the company is in default in making payments.”

This was an error: Your policy defines financial default as “the total cessation of operations,” and Vantage at the time was running at least some cruises. Travel Insured International’s response simply said that “your travel supplier canceling your trip is not a covered reason.” True.

When you first appealed in April, Vantage was two months short of declaring bankruptcy outright, and was not yet in financial default as defined by the policy. But it was teetering. (That one of its cruises left at all made headlines in The Boston Globe .) This time, Travel Insured International denied your claim, citing the bankruptcy clause, which protects policy holders in case of “Bankruptcy or default of an airline, cruise line, tour operator or other travel provider (other than the Travel Supplier, tour operator, travel agency, organization or firm from whom you purchased your travel arrangements).”

That parenthetical says you are not covered if the organization that sold you the cruise goes bankrupt. You purchased the cruise directly from Vantage, so you are not covered, according to the claims adjuster’s reasoning. (Why the company even cited this clause, if the cruise line was not yet in default, remains a mystery.)

Similar clauses appear in many travel policies, but that’s not what they’re supposed to mean, said Loretta Worters, vice president for media relations at the Insurance Information Institute , an industry group.

Such provisions, she explained, are intended to exclude coverage for an unscrupulous or financially flailing middleman that goes belly-up after collecting your money but before passing it along to the actual travel provider.

“Some of these are fly-by-night, travel-agencies-in-their-kitchen kinds of things,” Ms. Worters said. ( We encountered one such agency in a previous Tripped Up column .)

Guess who agreed with Ms. Worters: The agent who answered the phone when I called Travel Insured International’s customer care line as a potential customer. I asked about the clause and she agreed it was ambiguous, checking with a supervisor before saying: “If you are booking directly with the company and the company itself goes under default or bankruptcy, you would be able to file a claim for the nonrefundable portion of your trip.”

Ms. Whilldin, the spokeswoman for Travel Insured International, did not specifically answer my question about this apparent conflict. But it seems their claims adjuster made a mistake, aided by the ambiguous language of the underwriter who wrote the policy. (That’s United States Fire Insurance, another Crum & Forster company.)

Now, let’s discuss the second appeal. “Once you cancel your trip, the coverage under the plan ends,” Travel Insured International said. Your argument is that you did not cancel; Vantage did.

I think almost anyone who isn’t a lawyer would agree with you. But Oren Bar-Gill , a professor at Harvard Law School and the author of “Seduction by Contract: Law, Economics and Psychology in Consumer Markets,” explained to me the opposing argument. Vantage was contractually allowed to change the dates or offer credit, and you refused, the equivalent of canceling.

But, he added, when Vantage agreed to refund your cruise, it could be “considered a waiver of their contractual rights,” weakening the argument that you canceled your contract.

In a lawsuit New York State filed against the now-defunct Vantage and its former owner, Henry Lewis, the issue also comes up: The suit says Vantage “deceptively” mislabeled cancellations as “postponements.”

Even Travel Insured International admitted that Vantage had canceled, in its original letter rejecting your claim. “It is our understanding that your travel supplier, Vantage, canceled your cruise,” the claims adjuster wrote. Somehow, however, by the third response you had gone from cancelee to canceler.

You also missed a red flag when you chose your policy. Suzanne Morrow, the chief executive of InsureMyTrip , where you found your plan, told me you called the company within minutes of your purchase and asked an agent to point you to the bankruptcy clause. (You confirmed this to me.)

That means you’re not the typical insurance customer blindsided by small print you never read. If you were so concerned about the cruise line’s solvency, you could have canceled your plan during the insurer’s “free look” period and chosen one with more straightforward language — I found several on the InsureMyTrip website.

What lessons can we take away from your debacle?

To begin with, pay for everything with a credit card when your credit limit allows. Because of an odd quirk in a 1974 law , card issuers are required to reimburse you if the company you interacted with goes bankrupt.

Beyond that, the basic advice for travel insurance remains unchanged: Shop for a plan separately through a provider you trust or an aggregator like InsureMyTrip, rather than adding trip protection by checking a box just before you purchase a big-ticket item. Read the policy summaries fully and click through to the actual policy document to read fine print on issues that concern you most (say, bankruptcy protection or medical coverage for pre-existing conditions).

If you don’t understand anything, call the company. If it cannot answer satisfactorily and follow up in writing, choose another provider.

Family infected with roundworms that can travel to brain after eating undercooked bear kebabs

Three people ended up in hospital suffering from fever, severe muscle soreness and swelling around the eyes.

A group of people were struck down with roundworms after eating undercook bear meat at a family reunion.

In July 2022, the Minnesota Department of Health was notified that a 29-year-old man had been to the hospital multiple times over a two-and-a-half-week period with symptoms including fever, severe muscle soreness, swelling around the eyes, among others.

Following his second visit, the man told doctors that he had attended a family gathering in South Dakota, where they ate black bear meat kebabs which had been "harvested" by one of the family members in Saskatchewan, Canada.

The meat had been in a freezer for a month and a half before being thawed out for the meal.

As the meat was dark in colour, it was accidentally served rare initially, before diners noticed and it was recooked, according to the Centres for Disease Control (CDC).

Nine family members, largely from Minnesota but also from South Dakota and Arizona, ate the meal, though some only ate vegetables, which had been cooked and served with the meat.

Doctors ultimately diagnosed the 29-year-old with trichinellosis, a roundworm which is rare in humans and usually contracted by eating wild game.

Once in a human host, the larvae can then move through the body to muscle tissue and organs, including the brain.

Five other family members were diagnosed with the worms, including a 12-year-old girl and two other family members who had only eaten the vegetables.

A total of three family members ended up in hospital, where they were treated with albendazole.

According to the Mayo Clinic, this medication prevents the worms absorbing sugar so they lose energy and die.

The CDC says the only way to ensure trichinella parasites are dead, is to cook the meat to an internal temperature of at least 74C.

It is thought that up to one-quarter of black bears in Canada and Alaska may be infected.

The City is seeking talent for its new Resident Service Delivery Initiative

wow travel services

On Inauguration Day, Mayor Parker signed Executive Order 2-24 which launched the Resident Service Delivery Initiative (RSDI). RSDI is a long-term initiative to improve resident-focused services with the goal of creating a local government that is visible, responsive, and effective.

We define a service as something that includes one or more interactions between a resident and the City that result in an outcome for the resident. The City provides a huge number of services, but this Executive Order 2-24 does not include social services or public safety. It aims to improve services that the City has sole control over. Those services still vary broadly, in fact, we have identified 266 of them! These services include everything from filing taxes, requesting tree maintenance, becoming a block captain or paying your water bill. These are the services that touch Philadelphia residents daily and improving them is our top priority.

The Office of the Chief Administrative Office (CAO) is working with the Mayor’s Office of Policy Planning and Delivery (OPPD) and the Managing Director’s Office (MDO) to achieve the goals of this Executive Order. In order to accomplish this tall task, the City is eager to fill the following positions with passionate and innovative leaders interested in making a difference in the lives of their fellow Philadelphians.

Open positions for the RSDI team:

  • Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO): Business Process Analyst
  • CAO: Project Delivery Manager
  • CAO: Project Delivery Coordinator
  • Office of Innovation and Technology (OIT): Software Engineer
  • OIT: Content Strategist
  • OIT: UX (User Experience) Strategist
  • PHL Service Design Studio (SDS): Service Design Strategist (Design Research Focus)
  • SDS: Two Service Design Strategist s (Community Co-Design Focus)
  • SDS: Service Design Strategist (Implementation Focus)
  • SDS: Research and Evaluation Specialist

The Office of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) works to modernize city government and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of City services. The CAO oversees seven City departments and offices, innovating and strengthening their administrative functions and supporting their resident-facing operations to evaluate, plan, and continually improve their service delivery.

The Office of Innovation and Technology (OIT) drives the City’s technology strategy. The office creates innovative solutions to make government services more efficient and transparent.

The PHL Service Design Studio (SDS) collaborates with residents and City employees at all levels of government to design accessible, trauma-responsive, and equitable services.
