Acadia National Park

Sweeping mountain views, rugged ocean scenery and abundant wildlife all contribute to the splendor that is Acadia National Park .  The heart and soul of Acadia is Mount Desert Island , a short drive from the airport.  The island is a place with scenic pink-granite mountains, deep glacial ponds, cobblestone beaches and ocean side cliffs. Bald eagles, ospreys and peregrine falcons patrol the skies while seals, porpoises and seabirds fish the cold waters of Frenchman Bay . Added to the hiking is a morning of sea kayaking, and of course, a lobster dinner!  We are going to experience Acadia in its entirety on our Acadia National Park hiking tour.

See our detailed itinerary here, or contact us for more information! Timberline Adventures offers guided hike and bike tours across the U.S. and Canada, and our experts across the country are ready to guide you in your outdoor experience.

Happiness Promise

There are hundreds of thousands of guides and tour operators around the world. Figuring out who to trust is stressful and hard.

That’s why we started 10Adventures Tours, we’re here to make it easy to find a great guide or tour operator. We handpick the best local guides and tour operators for 10Adventures, working to ensure you have great guides and a great trip.

We know it sucks to show up in a different country and find out the tents are junk, the guide incompetent or the route different from what we thought we were getting.

We want to give our users peace of mind that you’ll have a great trip and offer a guarantee that we will work with you to make it right.

How does this work? Well, if you feel that something about your trip didn’t’ meet your expectations, let us know. We will then work to gather the details and figure out where things went wrong. If something indeed wasn’t as described, or went wrong with your trip, and the problem was within the control of either oursleves, the guide or the tour company, we will then work out a refund with you that’s proportional to the scale of the problem.

Obviously the best way to make a great trip is to tell your local guide or tour operator and give them the chance to fix the solution while you are on your trip. Most things can be solved by telling your guide when the issue develops. If that doesn’t solve it, then email us right away. Please don’t wait to voice your concerns until the trip is over, as it’s much harder to solve issues after the fact.

We work hard to make sure you have a great trip. If something isn’t right, please email  [email protected]  and we will get to work right away.

Acadia National Park Hiking Tour Details

Overview for acadia national park hiking tour.

Spend six days exploring New England’s beautiful Acadia National Park on this guided hiking tour. Your expert guides will take you on the best trails the park has to offer, from challenging mountain trails to scenic beaches along the coastline.

You’ll be amazed by the difference between the charming coastal town of Bar Harbor and the scenic granite mountains of Acadia. During this tour, you’ll be climbing Dorr, Cadillac, Penobscot, and Gorham Mountains. Then, take to the water for a sea kayaking where you’ll explore remote bays in protected coastal waters. After your daily adventures, you’ll be returning to Bar Harbor to enjoy the famous New England hospitality (and lobster rolls!). The Hiking Tour in Acadia National Park is unforgettable each step of the way.

Itinerary for Acadia National Park Hiking Tour

Arrive in acadia national park.

Meet the group early at the Bangor airport. You’ll have breakfast and then make the hour drive to Acadia National Park.

You’ll start your hike along a carriage road to Witch Hole Pond. In the afternoon you’ll be hiking the Sieur de Monts Springs area where you’ll discover mountain springs, plank bridges, and beautiful views. After the hike, you’ll check-in at the hotel in Bar Harbor.

Hike up Dorr Mountain

Start your day with a stroll through the harbor and a short walk along the Bar Harbor shore path. Then you’ll head back to the park and start your strenuous hike up Dorr Mountain. The scenery will be spectacular from the top, as well as on your descent as you walk through the gorge between Dorr and Cadillac.

Cadillac Mountain Hike

Your hike today will be up Cadillac Mountain. As you climb, the odds are good that you’ll see wildlife, especially the birds of prey that frequent Eagles Crag.

On the way back you’ll take a lunch break at Featherbed pond before returning to Bar Harbor.

Sea Kayaking Adventure

This may be a hiking tour of the mountains, but no trip to New England is complete without getting out on the water! Today you’ll go on a sea kayaking excursion. There is no experience required as you’ll receive instruction and will be kayaking on the protected western side of Acadia.

The areas of Blue Hill Bay or Western Bay are less busy and offer a great chance to paddle in a remote area that is away from the open ocean. In the afternoon you can explore charming Bar Harbor, relax at the hotel, or wander a trail on your own.

Penobscot Mountain Hiking

Your hike today will begin from Jordon Pond House where you’ll pick up the trail to climb Penobscot Mountain. The climb is steep and offers beautiful views of the Cranberry Isles, a smattering of islands in the deep blue sea.

Reward yourself with a snack at Jordon Pond House on your way back into town.

Climb the Beehive and Gorham Mountain

Your last day already! Take the trail from Sand Beach and start the challenging hike up the Beehive. The track gets so steep that certain points have iron rungs to help your ascent. The views from the top are fantastic, especially in the fall when the trees are deep red and golden.

After this thrilling climb, you’ll walk over Gorham Mountain, and then loop back to Sand Beach. You’ll have time for a final lunch by the sea before returning to Bangor.

Introduce Yourself To Maine With a Hike

To hike in Maine is to introduce yourself to our state, one step at a time. You breathe in the salt as you round a corner in Acadia National Park, or hoist yourself up a steep pitch on a mountain in western Maine. Everything is slow, deliberate and linked with the land.

In State & National Parks

There are great hikes throughout Maine, on federal lands like Acadia, in state parks such as Mt. Blue and along the East Coast’s longest walk, the Appalachian Trail.

Baxter State Park

With 215 miles of hiking trails and Maine’s tallest mountain (Katahdin), there is stunning foliage to witness in this wild wonderland. A choose-your-adventure-type place, there are options for easy day hikes in addition to the more adventurous route of summiting Katahdin. A short day hike option to consider is Horse Mountain. From the park's north gate, the Horse Mountain trailhead is 0.6 mile from the gatehouse. The trail is steep but within 1.2 miles, you will see a sign for a spur trail to the viewpoint where you will have a birds-eye view of Grand Lake Matagamon.

Camden Hills State Park

Sweeping views at this park atop Mt. Battie are made even more spectacular with the rich colors of fall foliage. A popular trail to enjoy the summit and see Camden Harbor is the Nature Trail and then left onto the Tablelands Trail to the top of Mt. Battie.

Acadia National Park

Numerous summits, easy day hikes and craggy coastlines make Maine’s “crown jewel of the North Atlantic coast” a gorgeous place to witness foliage on a hike. There are many hikes, ranging from easy walks to the very challenging Beehive – where at certain points, you climb the mountain using iron rungs.

Kids love hiking , and Maine has plenty of paths perfect for them. Some are strolls, and others are as tough and demanding as anything their parents might enjoy.

In the Mountains

Hiking Maine mountains adds an extra dimension. Katahdin is Maine’s tallest peak — and one of the hardest. But the state has plenty of others that are fun and easier on the feet and nerves. For an even greater challenge, try Maine’s many rock-climbing routes , which range from granite walls over the Atlantic to hidden granite stashes elsewhere in the state.

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument provides over 87,000 acres of mountain and forestland for the serious hiker. There are many trails to enjoy like these in the south section of the monument, like Deasey Mountain – a challenging 10-mile hike where you get to ford a stream. Or head to the north section where there are reservable campsites and huts.

Maine Trail Finder provides a detailed list of Maine Hikes and hiking trails.

United States Hiking Trips

Maine's mountains and coast.

After over 30 years of guiding hiking and walking trips in some of Europe’s most beautiful areas, we are turning to our own backyard of Maine to explore its most charming landscapes and unspoiled stretches of wilderness. The western mountains and coastal regions offer two distinctly different, yet uniquely Maine, experiences.   Maine's Western Mountain region is five million acres of amazingly rich, diverse, and essential ecosystems. A region of old-growth forests, high Appalachian peaks, glimmering secluded lakes, and ancient Native American waterways, western Maine’s unique variety of habitats supports a phenomenal array of wildlife, including the state’s iconic moose, marten, loon, and the elusive lynx.    With over 5,000 miles of bold granite coastline, much of Maine’s identity is inextricably connected to the sea and seafaring. Windjammers, lighthouses, and quiet harborside villages remain timeless coastal fixtures. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, coastal towns with vibrant cultures of arts, craft breweries, and creative cuisine have only added to the allure.    The best way to experience Maine is to get out, walk its trails, sail its waters, breathe its mountain air, feel its salt breezes, and end the day in the welcoming comfort of a coastal inn or mountain lodge.

The top 10 hiking trails in Maine

Katelyn Michaud

May 6, 2023 • 7 min read

A woman hikes along the cliff edge in Maines Acadia National Park, Maine

From strenuous routes for experienced trekkers to moderate clambers through national parks, here are Maine's best hiking trails © Chris Bennett / Getty Images

There’s more to Maine  than lobsters and Stephen King novels. It’s also home to some of the best hiking in the northeast US, with thousands of miles of trails.

But choosing the best hiking routes in Maine is no easy feat. For the adventurous explorer, there are plenty of backcountry multi-day hikes and for the beginners who just want to see the beautiful coastline, the Pine Tree State has you covered.

From coastal treks with epic views of lighthouses perched over rocky saltwater-drenched ledges to strenuous bucket list hikes in the state's legendary wilderness, lace up your hiking boots and discover why Maine is called Vacationland.

1. Beehive Trail, Acadia National Park

Best for a unique hiking experience  1.5 miles, 2–3 hours, strenuous

Acadia National Park offers no shortage of incredible mountain peaks to climb for breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and Maine’s rocky coastline. The  Beehive Trail is one of the most unique trails in Acadia National Park and much of the trail requires climbing up iron rung ladders bolted to the granite.

The trailhead begins on a gradual path through the forest until you come to a trail marker. You’ll begin to climb some granite stairs, over iron bridges and finally up a series of iron rung ladders over boulders. Once you reach the summit at 520ft, you’re rewarded with stunning views of Sand Beach . You’ll descend the Bowl Trail where you can cool down in the Bowl, an alpine pond between Beehive and Gorham Mountain.

2. Mount Katahdin, Baxter State Park

Best for experienced hikers    5.2 miles, 8–12 hours, very strenuous

Named the “Greatest Mountain” by the Penobscot, Mt Katahdin is located in the heart of  Baxter State Park . Standing at 5269ft, this is both Maine’s tallest peak and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. Hiking Mt Katahdin takes approximately 8 to 12 hours and is a very strenuous hike.

The 5.2-mile Hunt Trail is one of the most popular trails to reach Baxter Peak as it offers picturesque views of Maine’s foothills and Katahdin Stream Falls. For well-prepared, experienced hikers, the famous 1.1-mile transverse of Knife Edge will test your fear of heights, but you’ll earn bragging rights with the locals.

Woman smiling as she jumps into water with a waterfall thundering in the background and a man laughing as he watches her plunge

3. Gulf Hagas, Brownville

Best hike for going for a swim 8.2 miles, 5–6 hours, moderate

Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the East,”  Gulf Hagas on the West Branch of the Pleasant River is a three-mile-long rock canyon that towers 500ft above the bubbling river. Gulf Hagas can be accessed through the Katahdin Iron Works Road in Brownville as part of the Appalachian Trail corridor in central Maine.

Shortly after the parking area, you’ll need to ford the river. The water levels vary widely depending on the season and rainfall. From here, you’ll walk along the Appalachian Trail through 150-year-old white pines in the Hermitage before connecting to the Gulf Hagas loop. At the next trail intersection, choose the Rim Trail, so you’re facing the numerous waterfalls as you ascend the loop trail. On a hot summer's day there are plenty of opportunities to go for a swim in the cool water.

4. Mt Battie, Camden Hills State Park

Best for the family   1.1 miles, 1–2 hours, moderate

Mt Battie, in  Camden Hills State Park , is one of Maine’s most iconic hikes. The 1.1-mile trail is short and steep and requires some scrambling but is doable for people of all ages. Standing at 780ft, the summit of Mt Battie features stunning views of the town of Camden and Penobscot Bay. Climb the stone tower for even better views and selfies.

5. Fairy Head Loop, Cutler Coast Public Reserved Land

Best for nature enthusiasts   10.4 miles, 7–8 hours, difficult

Overlooking the Bay of Fundy, Cutler Coast Public Reserved Land comprises over 12,334 acres of wilderness in Downeast Maine. Known as the  Bold Coast , the nature preserve is a unique place to experience a variety of Maine’s coastal ecosystems. Bring your camera as you don’t want to miss the sunrise over the rocky coastline.

The Fairy Head Loop is a 10.4-mile loop trail that provides almost four miles of shorefront hiking before running inland through meadows, forests and grass marshes. Wildlife is abundant, and there are a few camping spots available on a first-come, first-served basis.

A man stands with his small dog at the summit of a mountain looking out at the view of a distant lake

6. Tumbledown Mountain, Weld

Best hike for joining the crowd    3.7 miles, 3–4 hours, moderate

Nestled among the forested peaks in the western mountains of Maine,  Tumbledown Mountain in Weld is one of Maine’s most popular day hikes. This isn't the highest peak in the area or the peak with the best views, but it does have a couple of real showstoppers – the alpine pond situated at 2800ft and the 700ft granite cliffs on the south face overlooking the pond.

The easiest and most direct trail to the pond is the Brook Trail, which features a 1600ft elevation gain. Tumbledown Ridge Trail transverses towards the East Peak and descends a saddle until it climbs to the summit of West Peak.

The Loop Trail is the most difficult and recommended for experienced hikers as it's very steep in sections, and you’ll need to climb up metal rungs through boulders to reach the summit. Bring your swimsuit and a picnic, and enjoy the peace from the granite summit.

7. 100-Mile Wilderness, Central Maine

Best for experienced multi-day hikers  100 miles, 5–10 days, strenuous

Spanning 100 miles from the small central Maine town of Monson to the southern border of Baxter State Park, the 100-Mile Wilderness is often called the “wildest section” of the Appalachian Trail as it’s both challenging to navigate and to traverse. Best to hike late June through July, the 100-Mile Wilderness is a true bucket-list hike for experienced and adventurous hikers.

You’ll need to pack everything you need and you should expect to be trekking for 8 to 12 hours a day. Throughout the 100 miles, you’ll climb almost 15,000ft. While the hike can be grueling, it is an incredible opportunity to experience Maine’s wilderness and wildlife. Keep your eyes open for moose.

Sunset from the Appalachian Trail, Bigelow Mountain, Maine

8. Bigelow Mountain, Bigelow Preserve

Best for elite hikers  16.3 miles, 8–10 hours, strenuous

Head off the beaten path and experience one of Backpacker Magazine’s hardest day hikes in America with the  Bigelow Mountain Traverse . The 16.3-mile traverse of the Bigelow Mountain Range via the Appalachian Trail offers some of the most incredible views of Maine’s western mountains and nearby Flagstaff Lake.

The quad-burning hike is a point-to-point hike, so you’ll need to plan accordingly with cars at two points. The ascent of Little Bigelow begins gradually before turning steeper until you reach the summit of Little Bigelow. From here, the next 6.4 miles are grueling ascends and descends along Bigelow Mountain to Avery Peak at 4088ft. There are more ups and downs until the end. If you’d like to turn the day hike into a weekend hike, there are plenty of tent platforms just below Avery Peak in Bigelow Col.

9. Southwest Ridge Trail, Pleasant Mountain

Best for stunning views  5.8 miles, 3–4 hours, moderate

Just an hour’s drive from Portland , Pleasant Mountain is southern Maine’s tallest mountain standing at 2006ft. Managed by  Loon Echo Land Trust , Pleasant Mountain is home to six trails covering over 10 miles. The views of the open summit are abundant, and if you’re lucky, you may be able to spot Mt Washington in New Hampshire.

The 3.6-mile Ledges Trail is the most popular and direct trail to the summit, but on a beautiful summer's day, it will be packed with fellow hikers. If you prefer the solitude of nature, the 5.8-mile roundtrip Southwest Ridge Trail is a great choice. Pack a picnic lunch and relax on the granite ledges of the summit.

10. Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park

Best for watching the sunrise  2.2 miles, 2–4 hours, moderate

Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is one of the first points in the US to see the sunrise. While most people drive to the summit,  the hike is relatively easy compared to other hikes on Mount Desert Island. The open granite peak of Cadillac Mountain offers almost panoramic views of Bar Harbor, Mount Desert Island and the Atlantic Ocean.

The best time to hike here is in the middle of the night so that you are at the summit and ready to see the sunrise over America. Grab a headlamp and head out along the 2.2-mile Cadillac Mountain North Ridge Trail to the 1528-ft summit under the stars. Don’t forget your flask of coffee!

15 Best Hikes in Maine For Beautiful Views

Whether you're a novice or an experienced trekker, there's a hiking trail in Maine for you.

Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.

maine hiking tour

It doesn't get much wilder than Maine — a state that's home to rocky shores, roaming moose, and the most difficult (and remote) segment of the Appalachian Trail. Here in the northeasternmost U.S. state, it's easy to find a hiking trail that gets you out into the woods and away from the flocks of tourists who tend to head to Maine's quaint coastal towns in search of picturesque lighthouses and the state's best lobster shacks.

Of course, it's Maine, so there are also plenty of beautiful hikes along the coastline — let's just say those flocks of tourists are coming here for a reason. It doesn't matter if you're a total newbie or a seasoned hiker, the Pine Tree State has a little dose of adventure that's suitable for everyone. Here's a look at some of the best hikes in Maine.

100-Mile Wilderness

Douglas Rissing / Getty Images

Long known as the most arduous section of the Appalachian Trail, the 100-Mile Wilderness gets its name from the approximate distance between the towns on either side of the segment. You'll want to prepare for an eight- to 10-day backpacking trip if you tackle this expedition, so think of this hike as something to work toward — not your first trek of the year. Those who take on the challenge are rewarded with access to some of Maine's most remote landscapes. The trail follows the slopes of wooded mountains and lake-speckled valleys, providing hikers with an authentic taste of the Maine Northwoods, complete with moose, lynxes, and loons.

Table Rock Trail

From Andover, Maine, you can hop on the scenic Table Rock Trail in Grafton Notch State Park , easily one of the best hikes in Maine. While the 2.1-mile loop is rated as hard due to some steep spots, you can customize your experience by picking trails that suit your level of experience. The trick is to travel counterclockwise and take the orange-marked trail up and the blue and white trails down. Along the way, you'll pass natural caves you can duck into.

Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail

Sure, you can drive up Cadillac Mountain, but why do that when you can take this moderately challenging 6.7-mile path to the top and back? The trail weaves through the woods, then ascends to open rocky ledges leading to the summit. Start your journey at the Blackwoods Campground , or pitch your tent there and have s'mores supplies waiting for your triumphant return.

Mount Kineo

Mount Kineo rises prominently out of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in Maine. The mountain is connected to the mainland by a narrow road, but you'll start your hiking journey at the Rockwood boat launch for a boat trip to the trailhead. From land, brave the Indian Trail to the top and make your final ascent up the converted fire tower for outstanding views of the sprawling lake below.

Knife Edge Trail

Jerry Monkman / Aurora Photos / Getty Images

If you're a confident hiker, an excursion up Mount Katahdin , the tallest peak and one of the best hikes in Maine, is a must. To climb the 5,269-foot peak from Katahdin's western face, take the short but steep Knife Edge Trail from Pamola to Baxter Peak, the mountain's highest point. Note that the 1.1-mile scramble is only for the sure-footed, as the trail has steep drop-offs and plenty of loose rocks.

Angel Falls Trail

These ribbony, 90-foot falls are perhaps Maine's tallest, depending on who you ask — but it's hard to see how the braided silver cords could be anything but the most photogenic. The trailhead is located about 18 miles south of Oquossoc on an old railroad grade called Bemis Road. The hike is short — just a mile — but a bit steep, and requires a few stream crossings. The payoff, however, is sublime.

Fire Warden’s Trail

The nearly five-mile Fire Warden's Trail climbs (sometimes steeply) up Bigelow Mountain, a 4,000-footer with six separate peaks. Bigelow Preserve , where the trail is found, gets less attention (and less traffic) than larger spots like Baxter State Park and Acadia National Park , and as such, you shouldn't have too much company while passing through cool hardwood forests and rocky ridges on the way up.

Mount Battie Trail

This moderate 1.1-mile hike is located just outside Camden, Maine, making it the perfect addition to a morning spent on the waters of Penobscot Bay. The trail can see a lot of daily traffic, but the bird-watching is superb and you'll be able to see the Atlantic Ocean and Maine's offshore islands from the top.

Ocean Path Trail

Cynthia Farr-Weinfeld / Getty Images

Stretching 2.2 miles one-way from Sand Beach to the Otter Point Overlook, with a possible detour to Thunder Hole, the family-friendly and relatively flat Ocean Path Trail in Acadia National Park offers beautiful views of the eastern coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. Take your time on this popular hike, which takes about 1.5 hours round-trip and is a favorite among trail runners, walkers, and birding enthusiasts.

Great Head Trail

This hike, also located in Acadia National Park (and not far from the Ocean Path Trail mentioned above) traverses the Atlantic coast while staying within the park's boundaries. The 1.4-mile Great Head Trail leads hikers over granite rock, near hidden coves, and into lush forests with a start and end at Sand Beach. The loop is rated as moderate and makes a great addition to a day at the beach or an afternoon spent exploring the wonders of Acadia.

Gulf Hagas Rim Trail and Pleasant River Tote

Chris Bennett / Getty Images

For a longer hike, head to Beaver Cove and take on the Gulf Hagas Rim Trail, an 8.6-mile loop offering views of “The Grand Canyon of Maine.” If the water is high — it usually is in the spring — leave your car at the Head of the Gulf Parking Area. From this side, there's a bridge over the river, which can't be said of the trail's other starting point, Gulf Hagas Parking Area. From that end, you'll have to cross the river by foot, with water that’s often up to your knees. Along the way, you’ll pass several waterfalls as you hike through remote forests (there's no cell service, so bring a good map and trusty compass, just in case) and take in views of the mountain vistas around you.

Burnt Meadow Mountain and Twin Brook Trails

This challenging 3.4-mile loop just outside Brownfield is one of the best hikes in Maine, with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a trail that meanders through both ancient forests and stark Alpine landscapes. Start by taking the trail designated with blue markers up to the summit, then complete the loop by taking the Twin Brooks Trail, marked with yellow markers, back to your car. Doing it this way can take up to four hours, but the impressive views and pleasant walk through the woods are well worth the effort.

Borestone Mountain Trail

Cavan Images / Getty Images

The Borestone Mountain Trail , located about 90 minutes north of Bangor in Guilford, gives you two options: you can stick to the original loop, which sends you on a scenic hike through the woods and then returns you to the parking area via a road, or you can make it more challenging by going back the way you came. Either way, you’ll encounter forest views, steep sections near the summit, and a memorable adventure on this bird-filled 3.5-mile hike through the Borestone Mountain Audubon Sanctuary , located in scenic Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness region (mentioned above).

Moxie Falls Trail

With a drop of roughly 90 feet, Moxie Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in Maine. This moderate two-mile out-and-back hike starts by taking you on a flat walk through the woods before leading you up a slightly steeper section to a series of wooden boardwalks and steps that allow you to reach various overlook points. Take your time checking out the views of the impressive falls from each of the lookout areas before retracing your steps.

Tumbledown Mountain

Tennyson Tappan / Getty Images

This 5.3-mile loop trail just outside Byron is more challenging thank you’d think — it starts off with a vigorous 1.5-mile climb up the Loop Trail, where you’re rewarded with stunning views of the western mountains, before leading you downhill a bit to scenic Tumbledown Pond for yet more Insta-worthy views. As you follow the two connecting routes (Tumbledown Ridge Trail and Brook Trail) back to Byron Road, keep an eye out for local wildlife such as red squirrels or endangered peregrine falcons, which have nesting sites here, as well as flora like spruce, red maple, and yellow birch trees.

Choosing the Right Hiking Trip

Choosing the right trip is a key ingredient for enjoying your hiking vacation. We offer backpacking trips, horse/llama/porter supported hikes, inn-based hiking tours, basecamp hiking tours and day hike tours. For guests looking to challenge themselves and travel deep into the backcountry, a backpacking trip is the best choice. Some people want to explore the backcountry but without heavy backpacks, and for those folks we recommend horse/llama/porter supported trips. Inn-based and basecamp tours are multi-day hiking vacations that showcase the best hikes and highlights of an area and are either inn-based or camping-based, and are great for families, couples, and solo travelers. And, finally, day hikes with an award winning hiking tour company like Wildland are an exceptional way to maximize a short amount of time at one of America’s amazing national parks.

maine hiking tour

When and Where to Hike

For desert hiking destinations like Joshua Tree and Death Valley, the best seasons are spring, fall and winter. In mountain destinations like Yellowstone, Iceland, the Pacific Northwest, the Alps and others, the best seasons to hike are late spring, summer and early fall. Some destinations are great year round, regardless of whether they are in the desert or mountains; examples are Grand Canyon, Sedona, the Smoky Mountains, Yosemite, Yellowstone (ski and snowshoe tours), Peru, and Ecuador. Winter is, generally, the most underrated season for hiking and backpacking tours in many areas, as it’s a spectacular time of year to hike but largely skipped over by many people.

When choosing your next destination, it’s important to consider more than just the time of year. You can call us 7 days a week at 800-715-HIKE (4453) to speak with our Adventure Consultant Team.

maine hiking tour

This story was originally published in July 2017.

Hiking doesn’t have to be this big daylong undertaking, especially in Maine, where there are hundreds of easy to moderately challenging trails to enjoy. Some of these trails explore small mountains and hills that offer great views.

A couple of years ago, I wrote up a list of 11 easy mountain hikes in Maine that I thought would be great spring adventures. I’ve found 11 more “easy” mountain hikes for you to try.

(By easy, I mean easy to moderately difficult. You won’t see Katahdin on this list, but you will find a smaller mountain that offers an amazing view of Katahdin!)

So let’s get right into it, and in no particular order…

Great Pond Mountain in Orland

With open ledges near its summit that offer great views, Great Pond Mountain is a popular hiking location in the 4,300-acre Great Pond Mountain Wildlands. Topping off at 1,020 feet above sea level, it’s the tallest mountain in the area, but compared a lot of other Maine mountains, it’s modest in size and fairly easy to climb. Hiking to the summit and back is about 2.5 miles. The trail is well built, marked and maintained. Expect gradual but steady climbing, first through the forest, then over more open terrain with bare bedrock and clumps of lichen and low-lying plants. The trail forms a loop at the top of the mountain, and a side trail travels out to some ledges.

Mount Pisgah in Winthrop

A popular hiking spot for people of the Augusta area, Mount Pisgah Conservation Area is about 800 acres of conserved forestland that features two blue-blazed hiking trails, as well as an old gravel road. All three lead to the top of Mount Pisgah, which stands approximately 980 feet above sea level and is one of the highest points for miles around. Standing atop the mountain is the greatest attraction on the property, a historic but sturdy fire lookout tower, which the public is welcome to climb the sturdy tower on a zigzagging staircase with 79 stairs. From the top of the tower, you’re rewarded with an unobstructed 360-degree view of the region. The two trails on the mountain connect to form a 2-mile loop that travels over unimproved forest floor, narrow bog bridges and rock steps. The climb to the summit of the mountain on these trails is gradual.

Bluff Head in Sedgwick

maine hiking tour

The 58-acre Bluff Hill Preserve, owned and maintained by the Blue Hill Heritage Trust, opened to the public in 2016 and features four connecting trails that together total just over 1 mile. The trails are marked with blue blazes and travel over fairly smooth forest floor to the top of a bluff, where you can sit and enjoy a stunning view of the Bagaduce River.

Eagle Bluff in Clifton

One of the finest rock climbing locations in the state, Eagle Bluff in Clifton is also a great place for a short but rewarding day hike. The bluff rises 700 feet above sea level, and from the top of its granite cliffs, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the area, including Cedar Swamp Pond and the distinctive humps of Little Peaked and Peaked mountains. The steep hike to the top of the bluff and back down is about 1 mile total, and you can lengthen it by taking a side trail to the base of the cliffs. Expect slippery leaf litter and plenty of exposed tree roots and rocks to make footing tricky in some areas. Exercise caution while exploring along the top of the cliffs.

Young Tunk Mountain in Cherryfield

maine hiking tour

A bald-topped hill in Cherryfield known locally as Young Tunk Mountain has long been a place for area residents to hike and pick wild blueberries. Local children who have climbed the hill call its granite summit the “Top of the World” because it provides wide open views of their towns below. A public trail on the mountain officially opened in 2016. Out and back, the hike is about 1.4 miles. The hill is just over 550 feet above sea level but has a bald summit that offers views of the hill’s namesake, Tunk Mountain, which rises 1,157 feet above sea level in the northwest, as well as Humpback (Lead) Mountain. And on a clear day, a line of wind turbines are faintly visible along the horizon.

Backwoods Mountain in Brooksville

maine hiking tour

Located in Holbrook Island Sanctuary State Park, Backwoods Mountain (also known as Bakeman Mountain) features a few of the many hiking trails located in the park. The Summit Trail, which leads from the trail to the top of the mountain, is 0.7 mile and includes a few steep, rocky sections, and the connecting Mountain Loop Trail circles the base of the mountain and is 1.7 miles long. Though only about 300 feet above sea level, the mountain does provide a partially open view of the area, and a bench has been located at that outlook. But the truly wonderful feature of this mountain is the abundance of moss growing pretty much everywhere throughout the forest. The park is home to several additional hiking trails, including trails that feature the remains old homesteads, old family cemeteries, rocky beaches on the coast, an interpretive nature trail and a waterfall.

Fernald’s Neck cliffs in Lincolnville

maine hiking tour

The 328-acre Fernald’s Neck Preserve occupies much of a peninsula that juts out into Megunticook Lake, a beautiful body of water in Lincolnville and Camden. While this isn’t technically a mountain, some of the trails (the Blue Trail and the Orange Trail) travel over rocky, mountain-like terrain to open views on cliffs along the shore. The terrain of the preserve is hilly, rising to over 200 feet above sea level near the shore. Altogether, the trails total 3.5 miles.

Kebo Mountain in Acadia National Park

Rising 407 feet above sea level, Kebo Mountain is one of the shortest named peaks in Acadia National Park that can be explored by public hiking trail. Located just outside downtown Bar Harbor, the small mountain is easy to find and offers a relatively quiet hike compared to other, more popular mountains in the park. The 0.9-mile Kebo Mountain Trail travels along the ridge of Kebo Mountain, north to south, over rocky terrain. For the most part, the slope of the ridge is gradual, with just a few steep steps along the way. Though this mountain only offers partial views of the region, it’s a nice little introduction into hiking in Acadia National Park.

Barnard Mountain near Millinocket

Located in the new Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, Barnard Mountain rises 1,621 feet above sea level and features a short hike with a big reward. The hike is 4 miles, out and back, with about half it along an old logging road, and the rest on a traditional hiking path that gradually climbs the mountain, switchbacking through a young forest to a beautiful outlook near the summit. From the open granite ledge at the end of the trail, hikers are greeted with a view of the mountainous Baxter State Park, with Katahdin front and center.

Morse Mountain in Phippsburg

The hike to the summit of Morse Mountain and Seawall Beach runs through the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area, a 600-acre property that lies on the coast between the banks of Sprague River and Morse River, and extends to the ocean. The walk is about 4 miles, out and back, and travels to the summit of Morse Mountain — just under 180 feet above sea level — then down to Seawall Beach. The entire walk is on an old road that is closed off to public traffic (barred by a locked gate) but used by property owners on Morse Mountain. Some of the road is pavement, while other portions are gravel. From the rocky summit of the mountain, you’ll be able to see the from the  winding Sprague River and surrounding wetlands, all the way to the ocean. And at Seawall Beach, you won’t be disappointed. It’s one of the largest, sandiest beaches in Maine.

Bar Island summit in Acadia National Park

Hiking across the sandbar to Bar Island is a popular adventure for summer visitors to Mount Desert Island. However, this little hike has gotten a few people in trouble over the years. The sandbar is only exposed for three hours each day, 1.5 hours before and after low tide. It then disappears under the ocean, leaving anyone remaining on the island trapped (or swimming). This hike is exactly two miles, out and back, and this includes the sandbar and beach walking. The trail dead-ends at the highest point on Bar Island, which is 173 feet above sea level and provides a unique perspective of the bustling town of Bar Harbor.

Snap a Selfie at Stephen King’s House

Known by many as the “King of Horror”, Stephen King is not only an acclaimed author, but is also a Maine resident! Over the years having your picture taken outside the home has become a popular thing to do.

Tyler was great. knowledgeable and personable. it felt like you were walking around with a friend. Portland has a deep history.

Photo of Keri M.

My boyfriend and I had a blast on the Maine History Tour in Portland with Tyler. Tyler has an incredible talent for bringing history to life. The way he used old photos and maps on the tour to draw comparisons between then and now was a really cool touch, highlighting his genuine passion for Portland's history. I was especially impressed by Tyler's friendliness and attention to safety. He consistently looked out for our group, ensuring we didn't create chaos in traffic or inconvenience pedestrians. Following the tour, my boyfriend and I wandered through the city, actively spotting architectural details that Tyler had pointed out -- things we likely would have overlooked otherwise. I'm giving a big thumbs up to Maine Day Ventures. Already eyeing their Foodie Tours for our next adventure. Thank you, Tyler!

Got some history on the bridge and learned about what separates Kennebunk and Kennebunkport, with insights provided by Cynthia and Marlene. 3. Lunch at Allison's with a generous lobster roll (Allison's Restaurant, 11 Dock Square, Kennebunkport, ME). 4. Stopped at KBC Shipyard Store for two local beer tastings and a cup of clam chowder (KBC Shipyard Store, 8 Western Ave., Kennebunk, ME). 5. Finished at Mornings in Paris (21 Western Ave., Kennebunk, ME) for coffee. Cynthia, along with her guide in training, Marlene, provided a comprehensive and enjoyable tour, combining local culinary delights with historical insights about the area.

The food on our tour was great and it was fun to try the local beers. Our guide, Timothy, was very informative and clearly passionate about his city. The information he provided about the food, history, and residents of the city of Portland were interesting and realistic. He also gave us information for the rest of our stay in Maine and convinced us we need to return to Portland for a much longer visit next time.

We had a FABULOUS historic tour of Portland with Marsha! It was horrible weather, but Marsha didn't flinch, and she proceeded to walk us and teach us for two full hours - SO much cool stuff in Portland, and we really feel we know the city now - can't wait to go back. FIVE stars for amazing tour guide, Marsha!!

We didn't do a foodie tour per se but there were mentions of restaurants and a little background about some of them. It was a history tour largely and a lot of rich details about the passing of time from the founding of Portland to the present. Our tour guide Mike did a terrific job. He mentioned that his regular job was that of a teacher and it showed. It was cool to walk all around town learning the significance of a lot of the buildings and little 'did you know?' facts about them. So much was covered including the lobster trade, numerous fires and rebuilding around town, Portland's role in U.S. wars, relations with Canada, the efforts of abolitionists, oldest buildings and restaurants, famous poets and artists who lived there, approximate areas of where historical events happened, and much more. It was a great way to move about town with a guided tour and get context on everything around you. If you're a history buff and like to walk and the weather is decent then you can definitely enjoy this. If you check the website assume there is a difference between this tour and one offered where it focuses solely on food and restaurants. Choose the one that suits you, but I can definitely recommend the history tour.

My girlfriend and I recently went on the Seafood Lover's Lunch in Portland with Maine Day Ventures with Kate as our tour guide. We had a nice time and the food was good, but there were several issues with this experience that would prevent me from providing a positive review. If you are considering booking a tour with this company, I encourage you to read my brief review and make an informed decision. 1. Tour Guide: Although Kate is a nice person and was clearly trying hard, her lack of experience and local knowledge was evident. We have gone on several food tours in cities around the country. Each tour guide had a unique local perspective and added an element beyond the food. While Kate was able to answer our questions to some extent, she was not able to go above and beyond and really give us a feel of Portland. Often times she would walk ahead of the group, look at her phone, and not engage with the group. I would recommend asking for a different tour guide if you decide to book with this company. 2. Food: To be fair, the food provided on the tour was good. Probably a solid 4/5 stars. However, when you compare this to the average food in Portland, it does not stand out. We went to several restaurants prior to the food tour and enjoyed the food at those establishments more (Sopo Seafood, Crispy Gai, Standard Baking Co.). Further, the portion sizes were quite small. After a good food tour, I am typically stuffed. My girlfriend, who is a very small eater, was able to eat everything and was still hungry at the end. When I booked the tour, we were promised to indulge in oysters, scallops, and other seafood specialities. However, we made no such stops to enjoy these delicacies. The only food we ate was one fish taco, a small seafood chowder, and a lobster roll, plus a few desserts. This may sound like a decent amount of food, but when you pay $150 plus tip, it no longer is. You could easily buy this food for less than $100. If the tour guide added value, this would be acceptable. However, this was not the case for us. Finally, the drinks were very small as well. You get 2 small portions of beer, each of which are about 4 oz. The total amount of beer is less than one bottle. Thus, the price for this tour is not justified in terms of the food/drinks provided, nor the service of the tour guide. If you come to Portland, skip this food tour. You can easily find food just as good, if not better food and pay half the price.

Tour was informative and entertaining. Our guide, Kate, was great, very knowledgeable and comfortable with the group. Choice of restaurant stops was superb, food was delicious everywhere! We would highly recommend this experience!!!

Recently participated in the Old Port Culinary walking tour. In hindsight, it was such a great way to start our Maine adventure. Our guide, Timothy, really imparted a lot of great information that helped us to enjoy the rest of our vacation even more. Plus, the food was awesome, but the stories were better!

Our tour guide Ross was absolutely amazing. He was very knowledgable and entertaining. We had a great time and learned much about Portland and it's rich history. I would definitely recommend taking this tour the first day you are in town.

If you’ve never seen a tribute act perform the songs of artists that are either too big to play in Maine or who have passed away, there’s a way to do a whole bunch of that this week in Portland.

There are also tribute shows happening in venues around the state all summer long.

A Strange Day is the Portland-based tribute to The Cure. Photo by Seth D. Warner

Let’s start with Portland-based A Strange Day, a tribute to British alternative act The Cure, fronted by singer and guitarist Seth Warner.

The band will perform The Cure’s second album, “Seventeen Seconds,” in its entirety, along with some hits and other cuts at Portland House of Music on Thursday.

The album was released on April 18, 1980. Lead singer and guitarist Robert Smith turned 21 three days later. The single  “A Forest” marked the band’s debut on the U.K. Singles Chart, where it reached the No. 31 spot. The song remains a setlist staple at The Cure’s live performances.

Warner said he put himself in the shoes of Cure fans when deciding what album to cover. “What I would like to hear from a Cure band is a dive into the specific eras that surrounded each record, and ‘Seventeen Seconds’ set the tone for the more introspective and gloomy textures and themes.” Advertisement

As for Warner’s favorite “Seventeen Seconds” tracks, he said, “I really like ‘At Night’ for its dynamic potential, and the edgy and angsty ‘M.'”

The band took its name from the track “A Strange Day” from The Cure’s 1982 album “Pornography.”

Along with Warner, the band is Pete Dugas (keys), Andrew Hodgkins (drums), Matt Kennedy (synth/sax), Kevin O’Reilly (bass), Casey Urich (trumpet) and Corey Urich.

Angel Butts, a copy editor living in Westbrook, has seen The Cure more than 100 times on three continents and at least 10 countries, including Latvia and Colombia. “They’re like breathing to me. They have this massive catalog and it spans every possible mood, I don’t know of another band with a palette like that. “Seventeen Seconds” is among her favorite of the band’s 13 studio albums.

Butts has seen The Cure play the “Seventeen Seconds” album all the way through three times. “One of those shows stands as the best show I’ve ever seen in my life. The Cure: Reflections, Nov. 27, 2011 at the  Beacon Theatre in New York City.”

Butts said she and her 13-year-old daughter will be attending the A Strange Day show. “I think she’s more excited than I am.” Advertisement

A Strange Day  8:30 p.m. Thursday. Portland House of Music, 25 Temple St., Portland, $12 in advance, $15 day of show, 21-plus. portlandhouseofmusic.com

Another British act that will likely never perform in Maine is The Rolling Stones. With more than 30 albums, the band achieved legendary status decades ago. Singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards are both 80, and the band is currently on tour and will be at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts, on Thursday.

There are still tickets left for that show, but you can save yourself hours of traffic jams and a lot of more by instead heading to Aura on Saturday to see Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones tribute show. Or maybe you’ll see the real deal and then keep the party going here in Maine.

Satisfaction has been slinging Stones hits for over two decades and has played more than 4,000 shows. Chris LeGrand’s take on Mick Jagger is pretty convincing, and he and the band will surely be pleased to meet you.

Satisfaction: The International Rolling Stones Tribute Show 9 p.m. Saturday. Aura, 121 Center St., Portland, $15, $25.50, 18-plus. auramaine.com

David Bowie and Prince died within five months of each other in 2016, at the ages of 69 and 57, respectively, and their losses were felt by millions of fans around the world. Advertisement

With contributions that are impossible to quantify, both artists left behind a legacy of music that lives on through radio play, home listening and tribute shows.

Boston-based musician Eric Gould loves both artists and is the bandleader of a Prince/Bowie tribute coming to Portland on Saturday. The band is a revolving lineup of players from all over the country.

Gould plays bass and designs the setlists. For this show, the musicians are Cal Kehoe (guitar, vocals), Adrian Tramontano (drums), Sammi Garrett (percussion, vocals), Josh Schwartz (baritone sax, vocals), Rob Somerville (tenor saxophone), Rob Volo (trombone) and Kiran Edwards (keys).

Gould said that, to him, Prince embodies soul, creative arrangement and precision. “His music has the best energy and makes you feel on top of the universe.”

He described Bowie as having a voice and character that is completely unique.

“It is powerful and epic and decadent,” said Gould, who has made a career out of finding unique connections through the songbooks of artists. “It is such a treat to present music people know and love in a way that is fresh to the ears. This combination brings so much joy to everyone on and off stage.” Advertisement
