Sarawak River Traditional Boat Cruise
It was a beautiful day and I decided to go on the Sarawak River Traditional Boat Cruise. Such cruise is available on Malaysia Holiday packages .
The ride starts at the Kuching Waterfront and is quite popular among tourist. Guest can expect to enjoy a calm ride along the Sarawak river on the boat ride.
I purposely wanted to go on the ride because I felt that as a local, I should know and experience the tourism products available in my home town.
ENHANCING YOUR VIEW OF KUCHING CITY
First of all, compared to the Sarawak River Cruise which utilizes the ship Equator, the Sarawak river traditional boat cruise uses a small traditional boat to bring guest for a ride along the Sarawak river.
The boat used for the traditional cruise is slightly bigger than the ones used for the penambang rides .
These traditional boat have been modified to allow guest to enjoy the scenery when the boats are cruising along the Sarawak river.
The route of the Sarawak River Traditional Boat Cruise is also shorter than the Sarawak River Cruise. The experience itself is significantly different.
This comes despite the person manning the ticketing counter claiming that the differences is only in the beverages offered on the Equator.
Going onto the boat itself gives some sort of excitement to those unfamiliar with boat rides. The boat rocks from left to right when one enters it and balancing the boat is the task of every passenger.
I’m used to boat rides so it didn’t bother me as much. Others I noticed were panicking the moment they realized the boat was shifting sideways. They screamed a bit every time someone new went into the boat.
As the boatman started the engine, the boat cruised up the Sarawak river smoothly.
The view from the boat was indeed spectacular. It was indeed eye-opening. It was one of those moments you realize you don’t really know your city that well.
The soft breeze gazed my face as the boat sailed past the Darul Hana Bridge, the Astana, Brooke Dockyard and many other landmarks I’ve only seen from land. The view from the river was indeed different.
FINDING HIDDEN TERRITORY
Since all the views were rather different to me, I was busy snapping photos of the beautiful scenery. I was so intrigue by he view that I only realized we had reached the end of our cruise up-river when the boat was making a u-turn.
The change of route was greeted by the soft amazing sunset of Kuching. The sunset was simply mesmerizing as it reflected itself on the glittering shine of the Sarawak river.
Heading down-stream revealed the less explored (and less developed) side of Kuching. Here large fishing boats were docked.
Fishermen, back from the days trip to sea can also be seen on these boats as some waved to us with smiles.
Our traditional boat ride passed by some high rise apartments and what seemed to be a forgotten waterfront, before the made a come about to the Malay village which was opposite the grand looking apartments.
It was here that the sounds of the Azan (a Muslim prayer) broke the silence of the boat engine as we continued to venture back to the jetty.
TICKET PRICES AND OTHER TOURS ABOUT THE SARAWAK RIVER TRADITIONAL BOAT CRUISE
A ride on the Sarawak river traditional boat cruise only cost RM19 per adult and RM9 per child (below 12 years of age). All payment are in cash.
There’s three different boats in service for the cruise; the Orang Ulu boat, the Malay boat and the Iban Long boat. I took the Orang Ulu boat. It was by chance. You can wait for your preferred boat.
The ride takes about an hour to complete and it starts at 10AM. The last cruise is at 6:30PM. You can go directly to the Kuching Waterfront to get a ride. Booking is not required unless you come in a huge group. You can also consider an all inclusive holidays to Asia if you intend to plan the cruise ahead.
Anyway, the cruise comes without any frills. This means there’s no refreshments or food provided. You only get the ride on this particular traditional boat cruise.
That said, if you are seeking something relaxing to do in Kuching, a ride on the Sarawak river traditional boat cruise may do just the trick.

Santubong Wildlife Cruise: Everything You Need To Know
Want an easy and enjoyable way to spot wildlife while staying in Kuching? Consider a Santubong Wildlife Cruise!
On these cruises, you sail along the Santubong River to the rivers and mangroves of the Santubong Peninsula, the mouth of the Salek Estuary and the Kuching Wetlands National Park just to the north and northwest of Kuching.
As you cruise along, your guide will look out for Irrawaddy dolphins, proboscis monkeys, silver-leaf monkeys, crocodiles, long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards and a variety of birds. As the day darkens, there are fireflies to spot as well.
So what exactly happens on these tours? Are they worth your precious holiday time? What can you expect?
Below, I share my full Santubong Wildlife Cruise review from my experience on one of these cruises. Keep reading to learn it all!

Santubong Wildlife Cruise Tours
To go on a Santubong Wildlife Cruise, you need to sign up for a tour.
These include pick-up and drop-off at your hotel and may include dinner as well. An English speaking guide is also included.
I recommend you do the same tour as I did. It’s a great price and easy to book. The price starts at RM185.
Click here to see the latest ticket prices and to make your booking.
There are a couple of other tour companies, but we saw them throughout our tour so they all seem to offer the same.
Tours start with a pickup around 4pm and a drop off at your hotel around 9pm depending on your exact tour, what it includes and how many people are dropped off/picked up before you. The cruise itself went for about 2.5 hours.
I recommend you take mosquito repellent. I felt bugs around me as soon as I hopped on the boat but the repellent kept them away after I applied it.
Santubong Wildlife Cruise Review [2023]
I went on my cruise in August. Click here to see it. This is my experience.
Pickups from the central Kuching area started from around 4pm. It took a little while to drive around and then it was a 45 minute drive to the cruise starting point in Kampung Santubong which is by the mouth of the Santubong River.
We drove past some spectacular buildings I hadn’t seen before in Kuching so keep a look out the window on your drive.
At the cruise starting point, there was a toilet and a vending machine. We were soon hopping on our boat. This required climbing over another boat, but it was straightforward.
There were nine of us in our boat and the boat was a great size for this. At about 5:15pm, we headed off, zooming around the mouth of the Salek Estuary and looking for dolphins.
I have one complaint of this tour and it’s that the guide barely spoke. At this point, I didn’t know we were looking for dolphins or what was going on as he hadn’t spoken a word except to get on the boat! It was a shame, but the good news is that it didn’t really matter as we still saw wildlife.
It took maybe ten minutes to spot our first Irrawaddy Dolphins that this area is famous for. They were so awesome! We spent about 30 minutes watching them gliding through the water. Magical!
Our guide said that there is a 50/50 chance of spotting them in the evening with the morning cruises having a closer to 99% success rate. So I felt lucky!
We then headed to the mangrove lined rivers of the Kuching Wetlands National Park for more wildlife spotting. It’s a beautiful area and it’s seems a little weird how many big trees are growing out of the water.
I wouldn’t say we saw many animals, but we did see the one that people most love to see, the proboscis monkey. We found two playing in a tree and it was fantastic! I loved every moment.
We also found macaques (a type of monkey).
Even without the animal spotting, it was a beautiful cruise as the sun set. The whole area was glowing and beautiful. We also went past a floating village which was quite scenic.
As the sun finished setting, we stopped for dinner in the boat. They had our pre-ordered meals which everyone enjoyed. I picked chicken noodles which wasn’t the best choice for me as the chicken was very bony which is not how I like it, but it was still quite delicious.
Even better was that our guide had some local fruit for us to try called crystal. It was delicious! Apparently, they are only available for a short time once a year. Definitely look for it if you are in Sarawak in August.
By now, it was quite a bit darker so we went looking for crocodiles and fireflies. The guide had a big flashlight he roamed over the river and surrounding trees.
We didn’t see crocodiles which actually made me happy as those creatures scare me. But we did see fireflies!
The little fireflies were so cute buzzing around the mangroves. The guide did find his voice here and told us a bit about them. We also saw a sleeping monkey in a tree.
We didn’t get long here before boating back which was good really as it was getting darker and darker which I found a little scary when going fast on a boat. In saying that, they had a big light on the water, and I don’t think it was actually unsafe.
We got back to the cruise starting point about 7:45pm. They brought the boat ashore and then we were back in our van and headed back to our hotels.
It was a superb evening, and I highly recommend taking a Santubong Wildlife Cruise.
You can find it here.
Where Is Santubong Wildlife Cruise Kuching?
These cruises start on the Santubong River (or Sungai Santubong in Malay). Boats depart from different places depending on your company. The map above shows where my tour departed from.
Since Santubong wildlife cruises are ran via tours that include hotel pick-up and drop-off, you don’t need to worry about getting here.
Cruises do no operate in rough seas or heavy rains.
Final Words
A Santubong Wildlife Cruise is a fantastic way to see wildlife easily from Kuching. It’s also a very beautiful cruise with the sun setting.
I was super happy to get to see both Irrawaddy dolphins and proboscis monkeys. It was fantastic.
I wish our guide had spoken more and told us what was happening during the tour, but he was good at finding wildlife for us so that’s the main thing.
I highly recommend you try to fit a Santubong Wildlife Cruise into your Kuching itinerary.

Set sail on Lake Shasta for this North State summer dining favorite
Matthew Doyle had an idea 21 years ago: Offer dinner cruises on Lake Shasta at sunset, serving meals made from locally sourced ingredients.
The former Air Force mechanic worked for Lake Shasta Caverns, fixing and maintaining boats and other equipment, he said.
At that time, the caverns and Lake Shasta touring agency occasionally took business associates and staff out onto the lake on their boats for dinner and to watch the sun go down. But there were no commercial dinner cruises on the lake. “I thought, ‘what a missed opportunity,’” Doyle said.
When he became general manager in 2003, Doyle pitched the idea to Bay Area residents and Lake Shasta Caverns tour owners Patty and John Winther. At the time, they were a bit skeptical, but gave him the go ahead, Doyle said.
2024 marks the 19th season Lake Shasta Dinner Cruises will bring guests out onto the lake for a meal and a chance to watch the sun set over the mountains.
Guests board a patio boat for each two-hour cruise and sit family style, with eight to 10 people to a table. Then a smaller boat with a kitchen pulls up alongside the dining boat to serve guests their meal — an all-you-can-eat buffet with tri-tip, chicken and shrimp entrees. Sides include potato salad, several fresh green salads, desserts and non-alcoholic drinks.
Staff buy as much of the food as possible from local sources, Doyle said. Meat is from R&R Quality Meats & Seafood and most produce comes from the Shasta Lake Farmers Market.
The evening includes a guided tour with information about lake levels, wildlife and the history of Lake Shasta. “It was second nature to us” to add a guided tour to the dinner cruise, Doyle said, because the business already hires guides for the cavern tours.
But unlike the cavern tours, which include tromping up and down approximately 650 stairs, people with mobility issues can attend the dinner cruise. “Our boats are designed for wheelchair access,” Doyle said.
There’s a shuttle to bring people to the boat if they can’t comfortably walk from the parking lot, said Gail Yulich, who took her first Lake Shasta dinner cruise on May 11, the opening weekend of the 2024 season.
“The lake was beautiful; very smooth. The service was fabulous and the staff was friendly,” said Yulich, who attended other dinner cruises while living in Salinas before moving to the North State in October 2023.
Dinner is served about an hour into the cruise, she said.
Her only complaint: “It was too short.” She wishes it lasted three hours instead of two, said Yulich, who booked another Lake Shasta dinner cruise in July for herself and family after she disembarked.
In 2023, about 2,100 people booked their dinner cruises, including private bookings, Doyle said.
Friday and Saturday night dinner cruises serve up to 40 guests per night. Private bookings for weddings, birthdays and other parties accommodate up to 60 people per cruise, according to Doyle.
Bookings fill up fast in summer, usually a month in advance, he said, so people should book a spot as soon as they know their preferred sail date.
Former Shasta Lake vice mayor plans to snowboard into Heaven
During his youth in Los Angeles, Doyle grew up a landlubber ― but not by choice.
“I wanted a boat. My parents wouldn’t put out the dough,” he said, laughing.
It might have been for the better, considering he liked taking engines apart. As a kid, he said was always fascinated with motors and “sticking things into outlets that shouldn’t go in there."
After graduating from Saugus High School in 1994, Doyle said his happy memories of visiting Lake Shasta as a child made him decide to settle in Bella Vista.
Doyle took a job as Lake Shasta Caverns mechanic after a stint in the Air Force. He said: “This was my first civilian job."
The reservist went back into the military nine months later, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. After leaving the miliary in 2003, the Winthers hired him as their general manager, Doyle said.
In addition to managing cruises and cavern tours, Doyle served on the Shasta Lake City Council from 2021 to 2022 and was the city’s vice mayor in 2022.
Serving in politics is a bit like boating, he said: “You have to navigate rough waters and do a lot of preplanning.”
Summer tours and cruises keep Doyle hopping, but in winter ― when not working on cavern tours ― he spends his free time fishing and doing his favorite sport: Snowboarding.
“I plan to slide into Heaven sideways” on a snowboard, he said.

For now, Doyle and cruise chef Jeff Curry are cooking up ideas for possible taco or spaghetti night cruises. They may also resurrect their Luau on the Lake, a dinner cruise with a Hawaiian theme and menu, Doyle said.
May 30 is the 60th anniversary of Lake Shasta Caverns tours, started in 1964. But Doyle said he plans to hold off celebrating until later this summer, when the season gets busier. At that time, Doyle said staff may do special lantern tours in the caverns and offer live music during dinner cruises.

Jersey Shore boat cruise is the hidden gem you've been looking for
New Jersey is known for its beaches and boardwalks, but the Garden State also has lakes and rivers that offer activities for the whole family.
Writers from onlyinyourstate.com , a travel and culture website, say River Lady Cruises is the Best Nighttime Cruise attraction in New Jersey.
The River Lady is a 150 passenger, old-school riverboat that operates with a paddlewheel and is based out of Toms River.
River Lady Cruises has six different types of cruises and offers guest two and half hours of scenic, tranquil views of Toms River and Barnegat Bay while dining. The sunset dinner cruise is offered three days a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Jersey Shore day cruises: Your guide to scenic adventures and delicious meals
Here is why River Lady Cruises is the best nighttime cruise in New Jersey, according to onlyinyourstate.com:
"Soon after setting off, you'll sit down for a delicious dinner. You can have it in the stately dining room or, in good weather, on the beautiful deck with a view of the sunset. The meal includes bread, salad, dessert, and your choice of one of six entrees. Once dinner is over, the sun will be going down and the colors over the Toms River are amazing. You'll get a look at the peaceful night sky before heading back to dock, full of delicious food and amazing memories of NJ's best river cruise."
Cruises are the best vacations for introverted travelers. Here's how I make them work for me.
- As an introvert, cruises are one of my favorite ways to travel and recharge.
- I wake up early and go on walks around the ship and take myself to dinner.
- I book cruises with lines like Princess that I know are more peaceful and relaxed, too.
I've been writing about my family's travels for over a decade and traveling for even longer. I'm also an introvert who gets easily overwhelmed by crowds and finds energy in moments of quiet solitude.
But even as a seeker of alone time, cruising remains among my favorite ways to explore the world.
Although heading onto a ship packed with thousands of guests may seem off-putting for introverts like me, cruising is among the best types of vacations I've taken from a recharging standpoint.
While at sea, there are plenty of moments, spaces, and activities perfect for taking time away from the chaos of the crowds. In fact, I'd even argue that cruising is one of the best vacations for introverted travelers .
I recently sailed aboard Princess Cruises' Caribbean Princess during spring break, when the ship was at its more than 3,000-passenger capacity , and never found myself feeling socially spent or overwhelmed by others.
Here's why cruises are great for introverts — plus, my advice for anyone who wants to recharge and take some "me time" on a cruise vacation.
And with cruise ships projected to be packed as ever this year, even extroverts could use these tips to find some much-needed peace on board.
First of all, some cruise lines are much more peaceful than others.
It's important to choose a cruise line that fits your travel personality .
Since my family knows me and my son are introverts, we choose cruise ships that attract a more calm clientele and offer a more elevated experience.
I've sailed with a few lines, but my family often chooses Princess Cruises because its ships are a bit calmer and more elevated than those packed with water slides and rock-climbing walls.
Plus, the more attractions and activities a ship offers, the more likely the people on it are seeking a louder, wilder time.
Ships often have quiet times in the early mornings and late nights.
I've found the two times when a ship's decks are virtually empty are early in the morning and late in the evening.
For most of the day, the busy main pool decks of the Caribbean Princess were full of revelers enjoying the spring-break sunshine, but in the morning and evening, things were much quieter.
Not having to fight the crowds to get a chair on the pool deck makes for a relaxing time of watching the ocean or reading a book quietly.
There's nothing like a morning walk with ocean views.
Each morning on a cruise, I set an alarm for 7 a.m. and wake up before my family to go for a walk around the ship.
The Caribbean Princess had a jogging track on one of the lower decks, and walking there while taking in sweeping ocean views was a beautiful way to start my days and burn off the stress caused by being around other people.
Although our ship offered a fitness center and group fitness classes, I found the peaceful outdoor track to be the better option for my introverted self.
Coffee and a good book are the perfect way to usher in the day, too.
Morning routines truly are an introvert's key to powering up for long days of cruising, whether those days include time in the pool or adventures in various ports of call.
After my morning walks, I'd grab a coffee and head to one of the ship's upper decks, where I'd read for a bit, getting caffeinated and ready for whatever each day would bring.
When the ship is crowded on sea days, I head to the spa.
My most recent sailing included three days at sea, meaning we did not get off at a port for about 72 hours straight.
On sea days, the ship's main areas are way more crowded, so I always book a spa treatment to escape.
On my recent trip, I booked a seaweed wrap and massage and spent time before and after the 90-minute service relaxing in the spa area, sipping infused water, and reading in my cozy robe.
Most ships have adult-only areas, which are often quite calm.
Another day-at-sea tip for introverts is to take advantage of the ship's adults-only areas.
Even if you're traveling with children , it's perfectly acceptable to send them off to the kids' clubs on board while you relax in a much quieter atmosphere.
The Caribbean Princess had an adults-only pool area available to all guests. Still, we took our seclusion a step further by renting a cabana in The Sanctuary, the cruise line's exclusive deck area just for grown-ups.
There, I recharged in complete silence by reading in a pool lounger overlooking the ocean.
Having a solo dinner on a cruise ship is amazing.
On one night of every cruise, I take myself on a little date, sending my husband and kids off to explore the ship together while I have dinner on my own.
I curl up in my chair with a good book and eat my dinner peacefully while I allow my body to relax and unwind from a full day of activities.
With no one at my table to chat with, I have time to recharge and quiet any stresses I've felt throughout the day.
In fact, cruising makes it easy to be alone and entertained for an entire evening.
On my sailing aboard the Caribbean Princess, I treated myself to dinner and a show.
Since the cruise line offered performances nightly in its onboard theater, I was able to head there after dinner to watch a show in darkness and solitude.
Yes, there were hundreds of other guests in the audience, but since I wasn't with my travel party, I didn't need to make small talk with anyone and was able to soak in the relaxing vibes.
But it's also OK — and easy — to blend into the crowd.
Another way I take some time for myself while cruising is to choose a few activities on the ship's entertainment schedule each day to attend alone.
From a paper-flower-making class to cooking demonstrations, our ship had plenty of interesting activities on offer each day.
Among my favorites? Sitting in on a trivia or game show-style activity all by myself — a team of one, ready to use my brain only for thinking of answers, not for making small talk.
Lastly, there's nothing more recharging than a cruise-ship nap.
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the bliss of a cruise-ship nap, which I took full advantage of most afternoons and reaped the benefits of.
After all, there's nothing quite like being rocked to sleep by the ocean at 3 p.m. after a long day in the sunshine.

The 5 best nyc dinner cruises for food & views.
These dinner cruises provide some of the best views of Manhattan.
The Best NYC Dinner Cruises
Courtesy of La Barca Cantina
When you're strolling the streets of Manhattan, it can be difficult to grasp the magnitude of the city, with its skyscrapers and densely packed landmarks. The solution? A boat ride. A breezy sail in New York Harbor can feature everything from an elegant dinner to a live jazz band to tacos and tequila. Read on to discover the top-rated New York City dinner cruise options as determined by travel expert opinion and recent reviews.
City Cruises New York Bateaux Premier Dinner Cruise
Price: From $144 Duration: 3 hours Standout perk: This all-glass boat delivers panoramic skyline views.
Climbing aboard the Bateaux feels like stepping into a greenhouse, with its glass-enclosed structure and water views in every direction. There are no bad seats on this boat, but as an upgrade you can reserve a window table for the best views of the Hudson River, the East River and the New York Harbor. This cruise is a match for anyone seeking elegance: The tables are covered in crisp white cloths, wine and cocktails are served in sparkling glasses, and a three-course a la carte dinner is served at a relaxed pace (no buffet here).
The Bateaux cruise is an experience to get dressed up for, where the dress code is semi-formal and dinner is accompanied by live music. The sunset can provide the perfect backdrop for pictures, and don't forget to snap a shot of the Statue of Liberty . Children younger than 6 are not permitted on this cruise, so expect a polished, for-adults atmosphere complete with creative cocktails and dancing under the stars. The Bateaux has rightfully earned a reputation for its fresh food; this three-course, plated menu includes several tempting a la carte options from a ravioli starter with crispy pancetta to osso bucco with cauliflower polenta.

City Cruises New York Signature Dinner Cruise
Price: From $109 Duration: 2.5 hours Standout perk: A live DJ gives this dinner cruise an extra dose of atmosphere.
Looking for a casual night of dining and dancing with the addition of a skyline backdrop? This dinner cruise offers just that. Set sail from Chelsea Piers in a climate-controlled boat along the Hudson and East rivers, admiring New York City landmarks like the Empire State Building . For dinner, indulge in a chef-prepared buffet with a wide range of options from Greek salad to oven-roasted salmon with miso to Caribbean jerk braised pork. If you're bringing a sweet tooth on board, be sure to check out the ample dessert station.
After snapping some pictures on the open-air deck, return to the cabin for cocktails from the cash bar, interactive games and upbeat music from the onboard DJ.
Those traveling with young kids will be pleased to know that infants younger than 3 cruise free – so feel free to bring your little ones along to enjoy the experience with you.
La Barca Cantina
Price: Varies Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: You'll find an extensive tequila and mezcal list on board to accompany the Mexican fare.
One criticism of New York dinner cruises is that they don't offer good value for money, but the "taco boat" challenges that critique with ceviche, tacos, churros, cocktails and skyline views for an affordable price. Climb aboard a yacht at Pier 81 to experience a youthful, modern interpretation of a dinner cruise – think: low lighting, couches for lounging and three bars, complete with Latin pop, salsa and dance music playing in the background. Raise a glass while the yacht sails south on the Hudson River to check out world-famous Manhattan skyline views.
La Barca Cantina also offers a bottomless brunch cruise with a DJ, as well as special events.

Price: From $54 Duration: 2 hours Standout perk: This no-fuss, excellent-value cruise option has drinks and snacks available for purchase on board.
When you're craving panoramic views rather than a three-course meal, choose the Circle Line's Harbor Lights cruise departing from Pier 83. This sightseeing sailing delivers an up-close experience of the Manhattan skyline lights coming to life, while cruising past landmarks including the Brooklyn Bridge and the Chrysler Building . A live guide provides narration and historical context for what you're seeing. As the sun sets behind New Jersey, watch the glow of the sinking sun reflect in the windows of skyscrapers.
Food from the onboard cafe – like salads, sandwiches and snacks – as well as beer, wine and cocktails at the bar are available for purchase. This is an ideal situation for groups with varying levels of hunger and thirst. Sit alfresco in the breeze or indoors in the climate-controlled cabin – it's up to you.
Non-English-speaking guests can download the Circle Line app for narration available in several languages; just be sure to bring your own headset.
