Germantown Update: Openings, Closings, and Coming Soon
Below is a list of restaurants and businesses that are new or coming soon to Germantown, as well as several that have recently closed: Now Open: TOUS les JOURS TOUS les JOURS is now open inside of New Grand Mart (13069 Wisteria Dr) in Germantown. The French-Asian Bakery features a variety of breads, pastries, and cakes that are baked in-store daily, as well as a wide selection of coffee/espresso based drinks and teas. Other vendors inside of the New Grand Mart food court include Noodles & Friends, Gogi Friends Korean BBQ, and Fortune Cha Bubble Tea.
Coming Soon: Authentic African Restaurant The owners of African International Market in Germantown (13011 Wisteria Dr) and Gaithersburg are opening a new restaurant in Germantown that will be called ‘Authentic African Restaurant.’ It will be located in Germantown Plaza, in the same shopping center as the first African International Market. An opening date is not yet available, but the restaurant plans to hold its Grand Opening this year (2023). The restaurant will serve authentic African cuisine. We’ll have an update as soon as it’s available.
Closed: Kung Fu Tea Kung Fu Tea has closed its Germantown location after approximately five years at the location. A sign has been placed in the door that states, “Location has closed, sorry for the inconvenience” . We are told the location may have plans to reopen under its original owner with more information to come. The Germantown store was the fifth Kung Fu Tea location to open in Montgomery County, back in 2018, and it’s closure comes just a couple months after MoCo’s first Kung Fu Tea closed its doors at the end of August.
Now Open: Margarita Bar & Grill Margarita Bar & Grill is now open at 19201 Frederick Rd in Germantown. The restaurant’s menu features a variety of tacos, burritos, chimichangas, pupusas, fajitas, steaks, salad, and seafood. Margarita options include Cadillac, Skinny, Flavored, Diablo, and Crazy. A video of the space and a few menu items is available in the video below.
Margarita Bar & Grill has taken over the space that was previously occupied by the Fraternal Order of Eagle #3509 and Captain Mori’s Seafood House. Seafood in the Buff, a mobile steamed crab business, operates out of the parking lot next to this location in the summer months.

Closed: Massage Envy Massage Envy at 20950 Frederick Rd in the Neelsville Village Center in Germantown permanently closed in September. The store is redirecting its members to the Gaithersburg Massage Envy location at 127 Crown Park Ave in Downtown Crown. According to signage posted on the front door, the store never fully recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic. Massage Envy offers massages, stretch therapy, and facials, and has additional Montgomery County locations in Rockville and Silver Spring.
Just outside of Germantown, The Clarks Lodge Bar & Grill is coming to 12011 Snowden Farm Pkwy, the former site of GrillMarx in Clarksburg. The Clarks Lodge is owned by the same restaurant group behind The Creek Lodge, which opened at 5566 Norbeck Rd in October 2022, as well as Brews & Barrels in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands. The menu is expected to be similar to that of The Creek Lodge and feature a selection of steaks, seafood, pasta, and a full bar. The restaurant is hoping to open in early February.
Scenthound is also coming to the Clarksburg Village Center, taking the location next to Orangetheory. Scenthound is a national grooming salon with over 30 locations either open or coming soon across various states. Scenthound offers a basic hygiene package that includes a bath, ear cleaning, nail trimming and teeth brushing with add-on options that include a blow dry and brush out, or haircut for dogs with longer fur. An opening date is not available, but construction has either already started or is expected to start soon.

Well-Paid Maids Celebrates 7 Years of Paying Living Wages
Aaron Seyedian launched the home cleaning company Well-Paid Maids in June 2017 and, that August, began offering cleaning services around the D.C. area with his staff of three -- including himself.
At the time, he paid cleaners a living wage of $16 an hour, plus benefits.
Here's what he told The Washington Post in September 2017: "It's just immoral for people to have to panic every time the rent is due, to wonder how they're going to pay for their groceries, or whether they can buy their kid a pair of shoes."
Today, Well-Paid Maids has grown into a team of around 35 employees. Cleaners now get paid a starting wage of $24 an hour. Plus, they get benefits, like health, vision, dental and life insurance; 24 paid days off per year; 100% employer-paid commuting costs; and more.
Aaron and other Well-Paid Maids team members have also advocated for paid family and medical leave, higher minimum wages, and more.
This summer, help Well-Paid Maids celebrate seven years of creating change in a notoriously dirty industry.

A Message from the Strategist
As the Principal Strategist for the Sexual and Gender Minority Employment Portfolio, I am elated to introduce the NIH theme for our 2024 Pride Month commemoration, "Pride in Belonging."
I hope this month’s activities will inspire you to take pride in your individuality and help foster the sense of belonging many of us find within our communities. We will highlight how various aspects of identity intersect and explain the importance of this intersection in addressing systemic inequalities here at NIH and for the communities we serve.
Belonging is experiencing happiness and comfort as a valued member of a group where acceptance and support from others are evident. By focusing on belonging, NIH recognizes the multifaceted nature of identity in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual community and the challenges faced by individuals who navigate intersecting identities. This powerful message highlights the strength and beauty in coming together, embracing differences, and fostering a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and accepted.
By working together, both within the organization and with external allies, NIH can continue to make strides toward creating a more equitable and welcoming environment for all staff.

About the artwork, a message from leadership.
Dear Colleagues,
NIH proudly celebrates Pride Month under the banner of “Pride in Belonging.” This theme embodies the ongoing journey of recognizing, embracing, and uplifting LGBTQIA+ people across NIH and beyond. This year’s Pride Month centers on belonging to highlight the importance of embracing diversity and cultivating an inclusive atmosphere where all individuals are esteemed and empowered to flourish. Here at NIH, we know that diversity of thought and backgrounds within the NIH workforce is vital to advancing the mission of our agency.
NIH is committed to building belonging for LGBTQIA+ communities not only this month but throughout the year. We are proud of the work that is being done across the agency toward cultivating diversity in clinical trials and broader health research representative of sexual and gender diverse communities. We have also taken steps toward fostering a more supportive, respectful, and inclusive workplace for LGBTQIA+ people within the biomedical and health science research enterprise.
We hope that you will join us in celebrating Pride Month at our events throughout June. To kick off the month, we invite you to attend the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion’s (EDI) Sexual & Gender Minority Employment Portfolio Pride Flag Raising tomorrow, June 4, at 11:30 a.m. in front of Building 1. Raising the Pride flag signifies that LGBTQIA+ people are welcomed and celebrated at NIH, while also demonstrating our agency’s commitment to elevating these communities’ voices and perspectives in the work we do. Other Pride events this month include weekly SafeZone training from EDI along with a celebration and scientific webinar hosted by the NIH Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office .
Together, let us continue to build a culture of respect, dignity, and belonging for all members of the NIH community. This month and throughout the year we encourage you to visit EDI’s website, explore the blog posts , follow the office on LinkedIn and X , and watch EDI’s YouTube channel to stay informed.

Why sleep remains a nationwide challenge amplified for post-9/11 vets
In the United States, insufficient sleep is a widespread issue affecting approximately one in three adults , according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This statistic is even more alarming for post-9/11 veterans.
The latest Warrior Survey from Wounded Warrior Project found that sleep was the top reported health issue among veterans registered with the organization, with 80% reporting sleep problems. Many post-9/11 veterans are having trouble sleeping and staying asleep, and this significantly impacts their quality of life.
Evidence suggests that veterans’ duration of sleep and sleep quality are directly correlated with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and other mental and physical health challenges.
The prevalence of these conditions within this generation of veterans highlights the critical role sleep plays in overall wellness. Improving sleep quality is pivotal for enhancing quality of life, given the complex connection between sleep, physical health, and mental wellbeing.
A veteran’s journey through sleep problems
Air Force veteran and nurse Melissa McMahon is no stranger to sleepless nights.
Her sleep problems started when she lifted a fellow service member from a chair and heard a loud pop in her lower back and hips. She worked through the pain and her condition worsened over time.
Melissa experienced partial mobility loss on her left side, persistent backaches, and shifts between fatigue and a longing for sleep. She reached a breaking point when she started experiencing tremors that impacted her ability to provide medicine to patients.
Melissa then received a diagnosis of fibromyalgia — a disorder she learned is trauma-based and characterized by chronic muscle pain, tenderness, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. Her condition forced her to transition to administrative work within the Air Force, which made her feel increasingly isolated.
Coping with her new diagnosis, new role in the military, and physical limitations contributed to feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety.
These challenges, combined with poor diet and lack of physical activity and energy, led to extremes in Melissa’s sleep patterns. She either slept too long due to intense fatigue, averaging about 10 to 12 hours per day, or she would not sleep enough, with only a couple hours each night, hampered further by nightmares.
Melissa’s journey mirrors the story of many veterans grappling with the lasting effects of military service. The impact of poor sleep on quality of life has been well documented — affecting mental health and cognitive function and leading to an increase in unhealthy decisions around risky behaviors, diet, and exercise.
Research shows that common comorbid conditions among veterans diagnosed with sleep disorders include obesity, diabetes, congestive heart failure, depression, PTSD, and TBI.
How to support veterans’ sleep challenges
When Melissa realized she was having more bad days than good, she sought help. Through a personalized, multi-week coaching program with WWP’s Physical Health and Wellness team, Melissa identified the factors that hindered quality sleep and the factors that contributed to good sleep.
She recognized the impact of isolation on her mental health, and she addressed her severe depression and anxiety. Melissa adjusted her lifestyle by transforming her nutrition, adopting a well-balanced diet, and significantly increasing her exercise routine from one to two times per week to four to five times per week.
Over the years, her dedication paid off. Melissa gained mental strength, reconnected with peers, and reignited old hobbies, such as swimming and car racing. Most notably, she rediscovered the gift of restful sleep.
Sleep disorders and chronic pain are prevalent in veterans and have historically been viewed as secondary issues. Melissa’s story shows that sleep is complex and often should be viewed as the primary issue.
Sleep is not a singular challenge, nor is there one quick fix. The root causes for poor sleep are often a combination of physical and mental health. Understanding this connection and recognizing the profound impact of sleep on veterans is key to supporting their recovery.
Individualized programs extend a helping hand, guiding veterans like Melissa toward greater overall wellness. By considering the big picture — mental, physical, and social — we can empower warriors to reclaim their well-being, enhance their sleep, and improve their quality of life.
James Herrera is the vice president of Physical Health and Wellness for Wounded Warrior Project. He is an exercise physiologist and former Olympic coach who helps lead the organization’s Soldier Ride, adaptive sports, and health and wellness programs.
