Throughout the round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, guests visit 11 countries throughout both the eastern and western corners of the Caribbean.

After setting sail from Florida, Eurodam first turns westward toward the Bahamas, Jamaica, Honduras, Belize, and Mexico. Ports include Half Moon Bay Falmouth, Roatán, Belize City, and Cozumel. In the last weeks of 2017 and early 2018, there were reports about a surge in violent crime in the area of Montego Bay. The Jamaican Government has ordered military surveillance of the city and advised visitors to only use authorized tourist services.

IQCruising strongly advises cruise passengers to be cautious . But also to not panic. Sheer sensationalism may be twisting news. Until further updated reports, exploring Montego Bay on your own may not be the best option. Cruise passengers should check for safety updates with the U.S. Department of State and the Tourist Office in the Port Terminal.

Where cruise ships dock in Montego Bay

Montego Bay is a popular port of call for cruise lines like Carnival, MSC, and NCL but also Viking or Cunard. Cruise ships dock in what is known as Montego Bay Freeport which is around 3 miles (5 km) to the west of the second largest city in Jamaica. With 6 berths, the Port receives as many as 4 cruise ships per day - although this rare.

There is only one large Terminal building (a bit run down) that doesn't compare in modernity and amenities to the recently redeveloped port of Falmouth but that has all basic services.

Besides a number of typical duty-free and souvenir shops, restrooms, and beverage stand, there is also a Tourist Office booth at the terminal that can be of help to guide the cruise traveler wishing to explore Montego Bay on your own - also the right place to ask about what are official taxi fares.

Because the Cruise Port is not close to Montego Bay's attractions or any of the island's highlights, a 3-mile walk is not really an option - no shade, very hot and humid.

The way to town is along a busy road - the main exit to the south of Jamaica - and, unless the weather is cool and you have been in Mo'Bay before, the walk is not advisable even if you are planning to just go Downtown (the closest attraction to the Port) or a bit farther to the Doctor's Cave Beach.

Licensed taxis at the terminal

The good news is that right outside the Terminal the cruise traveler will find licensed taxi drivers with 'official' rates to all major attractions - a ride to Montego Bay shouldn't cost more than $5.00 and a taxi ride to Negril - 1 Hour and 15 Minutes - costs around $24.00 per person.

The days when haggling was mandatory to avoid a serious rip-off are long gone. Almost all destinations have standard fares and these only depend on how many passengers will be in the cab - check caribya.com or juta.com for Taxi Fares. However, be aware that to return to the ship, taxi drivers in town (or wherever you heading) may try to increase the return fare.

Cruise travelers planning to visit exclusively the historical center of Montego Bay will be better off by getting on the Hop-On Hop-Off bus aka Hot Spot Shuttle - $15.00 per person. Some cruise lines (Carnival) sell the Hot Spot Shuttle onboard for a couple of dollars more than the regular rate. The shuttle has stops close to all main attractions in Mo'Bay - Hip-Strip, Margaritaville, Doctors Cave and Downtown.

Things to do on a cruise to Monetgo Bay

There are a few interesting attractions in Mo'Bay or relatively close by. In the heart of the city, on Sam Sharpe Square , you will find the Cage (a monument evoking the days of slavery) and the Montego Bay Cultural Centre - an extension of the National Gallery of Jamaica.

On a more active note, Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville is, together with Doctor's Cave Beach, one of the main attractions in town. For all other top attractions near by you should either book a tour onboard your cruise ship, with independent tour operators online or a licensed taxi driver.

Just a few miles away, there are plantation houses that are a delight to visit for those interested in the rich history of Jamaica such as Bellefield Great House with its tropical gardens, views, and antique furnishings; the immaculately preserved Greenwood Great House that once belonged to the family of Elizabeth Barrett-Browning, the famous English poet

The Rose Hall Great House is another must see, where besides eerie stories of ghosts and witches, there are two championship golf courses - Cinnamon Hill and White Witch .

If your cruise calls at Montego Bay on a Tuesday or a Friday, you should consider an unusual tour to a working plantation - coffee and pineapples - in Croydon by the Catadupa Mountain.

If Golf is your thing, the Tryall Club is a famous luxury must in Jamaica, whilst at the more affordable Half Moon Golf Club there are also other activities on the property such as the Equestrian Centre and an area with duty-free shopping.

Further along the north coast, Braco Stables offer a unique Ride n' Swim experience; the Hampden Estate offers a journey into the heart of a working rum distillery established in 1750. At the Rasta Village , visitors can learn about the ways of Rastafari, participate in organic farming and learn to make traditional crafts.

Around twenty miles from Montego Bay, rafting on a 30 ft bamboo raft in Martha Brae is one of the top highlights of Jamaica and an opportunity for the cruise traveler to experience a truly unique tour. Rafting is also possible in the Mountain Valley.

All cruise lines offer excellent shore excursions (aka Shorex) and tours of Montego Bay. Besides the sightseeing options mentioned above, the cruise traveler should consider independent tour operators such as Jamaica Tour | Viator | Tours by Locals | Shore Trips | Shore Excursions .

If you’re visiting Falmouth on a cruise, you’re likely wondering what to do for the day. Located on the north coast of Jamaica, this Western Caribbean cruise port is a popular destination with a beautiful landscape and vibrant local culture.

Falmouth, Jamaica is located about mid-way between the more well known cruise ports in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.

The Falmouth cruise port is still developing and does get some mixed reviews from cruise passengers. However, there’s no need to stay on the cruise ship!

Falmouth, Jamaica Cruise Port 

The port in Falmouth is unique in that it was designed as a joint venture between the Port Authority of Jamaica and the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. This design makes the port an entertaining destination in and of itself. 

The Historic Falmouth Cruise Port area is gated, and houses many stores, restaurants and bars that are popular with cruise passengers! Outside of the gates, you’ll find Old Town, where you can walk and visit some of the local landmarks.

With only two berths, this port is less busy than the nearby Montego Bay and Ocho Rios ports of call. 

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About the Falmouth Cruise Port

The country of Jamaica has its own currency, the Jamaican Dollar (abbreviated J$). However, like most Caribbean islands, in the Falmouth port, vendors will accept U.S. dollars as well. 

The official language spoken in Jamaica is English, a result of the country’s many years under British rule. However, while English is the official language, don’t be surprised if you hear Jamaican Patois, a local creole language, spoken in informal settings.

Getting Around Falmouth, Jamaica

As cruise ship passengers exit the cruise ship into the Falmouth cruise port you’ll enter a gated retail complex. Passengers concerned about safety can feel comfortable within this gated area. 

Just outside the gates is the historical town of Falmouth. It’s easy to walk around “Old Town” Falmouth. However, cruise passengers will want to use the usual caution when walking down the streets or alleyways.

To visit beyond the port of Falmouth, it’s best to book shore excursions through your cruise line or a reputable third party tour provider.  

The gated retail complex in Falmouth is easy to get around on foot and is also wheelchair accessible. 

Public Transit

Just before you exit the main terminal for both piers, you’ll find an information booth and a large lot where you can meet tour buses and vans for shore excursions. 

Nearby you will find a fixed-rate taxi stand, with non-haggling rates posted to nearby sites. 

You can also catch a bus from Falmouth to Montego Bay on the Montego Bay Metro. The trip will take about an hour, but public transportation should be used cautiously since there are not many buses and departure times available.

You can experience Jamaica’s unique culture through music, food, and activities in Falmouth. Here are some of the best Falmouth Shore Excursions.

1. Hike the Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios

The incredible terraced waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and makes for epic photos. The falls at this natural phenomenon are 180 feet high and 600 feet long and takes about an hour and a half to climb to the top. 

Tour guides are available to help you climb and document your adventure with photos and videos available for purchase. Be sure to wear a swimsuit and leave your phone/camera in the provided lockers because you are certain to get wet.

Transportation to Dunns River from Falmouth port will take about an hour in each direction, which will be included in your excursion.

2. Bamboo Rafting on Martha Brae River

Although the legend of the Martha Brae River includes treasure hunters and a witch, this excursion is more about relaxation than adventure. 

A guide with a long pole will direct your bamboo raft in the calm waters of Martha Brae River as you relax on a comfortable seat. Not only will you get to see the lush Jamaican countryside, but you’ll also get to hear entertaining stories, historical information, and possibly a song or two from your guide. 

The Martha Brae River is only 6 miles south of Falmouth and is a great place to spend time in Jamaica. 

3. Swing into the Blue Hole

This natural wonder is the best place for an adventurous excursion. You’ll hike up to a waterfall that ends in a gorgeous blue pool or “hole.” There are rope swings and cliff diving spots available. 

The rocks can be slippery so good closed-toed shoes are a must. The waters are rough so only strong swimmers should attempt to jump in. 

Blue Hole is about an hour and a half drive from the Falmouth port. 

4. Snorkel at Doctors Cave Beach

Doctor’s Cave Beach is the most popular beach day excursion for cruise travelers! This beautiful beach is about a 45-minute drive from the Falmouth port. If you’re going on a family cruise, this is a great excursion option.

You’ll find calm areas as well as optional beach activities, like water trampolines and kayaks. If you go with an organized day tour, the entry cost is typically included.

However, if you go on your own or with a guide, the entry to Doctors Cave Beach costs $7. There are loungers and umbrellas available to rent as well as snorkeling equipment. 

Food service is offered on the beach, however, be advised that it is often slow. It’s a good idea to order before you are hungry.

5. Relax at the Hilton Rose Hall Resort

You can spend your Jamaican port day relaxing at one of the island’s top all inclusive resorts at Hilton Rose Hall. This excursion includes round-trip transfers from the cruise port of Falmouth, and full access to Hilton’s private beach, pools, and waterpark. 

You can relax beach or poolside with unlimited lunch, snacks, and beverages. Depending on your ship’s timeline, you might only be able to spend between 3-5 hours at the resort. 

6. Explore the Green Grotto Caves

Nature enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the Green Grotto caves, an excursion about 35 minutes from the Falmouth port. 

Visitors to the Green Grotto might see 9 of the 21 species of Jamaican bats that live here. The walking tour cost includes hard hats and knowledgable guides that teach about the storied history of the caves. 

At various times these caves have been known as the Runaway Bay Caves, Rum Caves, and Dairy Caves. They are currently named for the green algae that grow on their walls. 

7. Grab a Jamaican Patty at Juici Patties

This local favorite is a must-visit for Jamaican cuisine while you are docked in Falmouth. Ground beef, chicken, shrimp, or vegetables are mixed with spices and cooked inside a flaky pastry shell (like a hand pie). 

There are tasty Jamaican patties available within the gated port area, but if you want to go to #1-rated Juici Patties, it is about a five-minute walk from the port. 

We can attest to trying these out, and they are good!

8. Try Traditional Jamaican Food at Pepper’s Jerk Center

Kill two Jamaican flavors with one stone at Pepper’s Jerk Center, a short 8-minute walk or 3-minute taxi ride from the Falmouth Port. 

The customer service at this restaurant is great and the jerk chicken and rum punch will make you wish you had a longer port stay. 

9. Good Hope Plantation/Eco Adventure Outpost

Situated on a 2000-acre former sugar plantation, the Chukka Eco Adventure Outpost at Good Hope will give you a glimpse into Falmouth’s 18th century history and the opportunity to have some adventures. 

You can explore the immaculate grounds, tour the Good Hope Great House or participate in zip lining, bamboo rafting, river tubing, waterslides, and rum tasting. 

Good Hope is a 25-minute drive from the Falmouth port and is a wonderful place to see the natural beauty of Jamaica.  

10. Shop and Sample at the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port 

This port was designed to be a destination itself, with a wide open area between brick buildings in the British Georgian architecture style commonly found in Jamaica. 

Within the gated area you’ll find live music, food stands, restaurants, bars, arts and crafts vendors, and plenty of souvenirs. Try some famous Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee and Jamaican rum. There are enough stores to keep you busy for several hours in this clean and well-maintained port. 

One important thing to note, Margaritaville used to be a popular port attraction in Falmouth. Unfortunately, this location closed permanently in January 2023.

Taxis are a fantastic way to get around the island. They’re quite affordable and are driven by knowledgeable locals who know the roads well. 

Just be sure that you only hire licensed taxis. These are recognizable by their red license plates, which all have ‘PP’ on them.

If you’d prefer to drive yourself, you can easily rent a car on the island. Just be warned that driving in Jamaica can be tricky, as locals drive quite aggressively, and they often speed. Worse, the roads are not well-marked and some are poorly maintained.

ⓘ TIP: If you plan to enjoy a sunset cocktail or two, you should know that the legal alcohol limit is extremely low. If you want to avoid any hassle, be sure to call a taxi or have a designated driver.

Here’s a suggested one-week itinerary for your time on the island. We left it loose, so you have plenty of time to see what you want at each place. Keeping to a strict schedule goes against our idea of a vacation!

To save time and hassle, you’ll stay in Montego Bay for the week and see the rest of Jamaica on day trips. There’s no reason to change hotels if you don’t have to, right?

Day 1: Montego Bay

It make sense to explore what’s around your home base before heading too far out. Here are some things to do in Montego Bay:

Tour the city

You might visit Montego Bay Cultural Center, which has unique old slavery items, go shopping, try the local cuisine, or just check out area viewpoints and attractions like Rose Hall Great House. If you’re in the market for souvenirs, you can get great deals on Jamaican coffee, rum, and other novelty items here as well.

Head to the beach

There are some great beaches in the city. Top options include Doctor’s Cave Beach , Tropical Bliss, and One Man Beach. 

Do some snorkeling

Montego Bay is the best place to go diving or snorkeling . Marvel at the blue lagoons and the world of natural wonders beneath the surface. 

Enjoy the nightlife

This is what Montego Bay is best known for. Go out, have a drink or two, and mingle with the locals. 

Day 2: Negril

A scenic 1.5-hour drive from Montego Bay will see you in Negril, a coastal town best known for its stunning ocean waters. It’s the perfect place to head out to sea on a boat tour and enjoy the ocean air. 

Walk down Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach offers miles and miles of beautiful views, pristine sand and clear, turquoise waters. You can grab a Jamaican patty or ice cream from one of the local vendors and enjoy a slow stroll along the water. 

Take a glass-bottom boat tour

Take advantage of Negril’s clear and calm waters and head out on a transparent glass-bottom boat. You’ll catch sights of the fish and coral beneath the surface, which really is a sight to behold. 

Head to Rick’s Cafe

Located atop a 35-foot cliffon the far west end of Jamaica, Rick’s Cafe is one of Negril’s best-loved spots. This longtime bar/eatery serves Caribbean grub and cocktails, plus a pool and live band music to accompany your meal.

Rick’s Cafe has some of the most breathtaking views of the Caribbean, especially at sunset. But if you’re there earlier in the day and you’re brave enough, you can join the hordes of adventure-seekers as they jump off the restaurant’s cliff face into the warm waters. 

Day 3: Nine Mile

The birthplace of Bob Marley, Nine Mile is around 2 hours from Montego Bay. It’s a small town, though, so you can easily explore it in a few hours.

Bob Marley Museum

The Bob Marley Museum is the main attraction in the tiny village, and it welcomes thousands of tourists each year. This is one of the most important historical places to see in Jamaica, and the tour guide inside the museum will share all of their knowledge about Marley and his legacy. 

For the rest of your trip, simply enjoy the town and its sights. The drive is picturesque and the village offers a quaint look into Jamaican history.

Day 4: Kingston 

Jamaica’s capital city is about 2.5 hours from Montego Bay, and it’s a must on any Jamaica itinerary. 

See the museums and galleries

There are quite a few galleries and museums in the city, so make a list and explore Kingston’s highlights. The Bob Marley Museum, Devon House , and the National Gallery of Jamaica are some unmissable options. 

Rockfort Mineral Bath

The mineral baths on the outskirts of Kingston offer a revitalizing visit. Spend up to 40 minutes in one of the several pools and see for yourself if the rumors of healing powers are true. 

Learn about pirates at Port Royal

An hour from Kingston, you can visit this tiny port. There’s a museum and other landmarks that show why this town was once known as ‘ the wickedest city in the world ’. As well as Jamaican naval history. See cannons, fort remains, and many items recovered from the sea. 

Day 5: Ocho Rios & Dunn’s River Falls

Ocho Rios (“eight rivers”) is arguably the most beautiful place in Jamaica. There’s a ton to do here, so it’s a good thing the drive will only take about 1.5 hours. 

Walk the town

Once you’ve arrived, spend an hour or two seeing what the town has to offer. There’s an art gallery, a craft market, and many other local gems. You can also visit one of the city’s beaches for some sea air. 

Lunch at Scotchie’s

This spot is famous for its jerk chicken, making it the obvious choice for a lunch break while exploring Ocho Rios. 

Turtle River Falls

This 15-acre tropical garden offers a welcome spot to catch your breath and take in the serenity around you. Enjoy the waterfalls, tropical swimming pool, and variety of tropical bird species found in this area. 

Dunn’s River Falls

On your way back to Montego Bay, we’d highly recommend a stop off at Dunn’s River Falls to enjoy the view and natural beauty. There is an entrance fee, but it’s worth it.

Day 6: Discovery Bay

Believed by some to be the place that Christopher Columbus first landed, Discovery Bay is just an hour’s drive from Montego Bay. 

Columbus Park

This open-air museum is a must-see, especially for history and archaeological enthusiasts. Spend some time wandering through the historic items, such as a cannon, an old water wheel, and a corn-husker. 

Puerto Seco beach park

Take some time out of sightseeing to enjoy this fun beach park. This is great if you have kids, or if you’re a big kid yourself. There’s an inflatable water park, clean pools, and ample space to laze in the sun. 

Green Grotto Caves

Located between Discovery Bay and Runaway Bay, this underground site offers a geological and historical lesson. The caves were used by the Spaniards to hide from the invading English, but today they’re a popular site for tourists. 

Day 7: Falmouth

Drive about 40 minutes from your accommodation, and you’ll reach Falmouth, a picturesque port town located between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. 

Heritage Walk

The best way to get a feel for the town is to go on a heritage walk. Book a local for a guided walk, or head out on your own with Google Maps as your guide. Find historic landmarks and points of interest, and learn more about the town. 

Lunch and shopping at the port

One of the cleanest ports in Jamaica, the historic port of Falmouth deserves a couple of hours’ worth of exploring. Browse the shops, find souvenirs to take home, and then take your pick of restaurants to sit down and enjoy a traditional meal. 

Optional: Martha’s Brae Bamboo Raft Trip

Before heading back, take a 10-minute trip to Martha Brae Rafting Village . Here, you’ll be taken on a bamboo raft down a calm river. The ride is about 1 hour long, and you’ll hear the story of The Legend of the Martha Brae as you go.

Boat to Booby Island

Just a short boat trip from Negril, this is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. Come here to enjoy the waters, go snorkeling, or have a lobster barbeque. This is probably best done with a group of locals who can show you around. 

Black River & YS Falls

Travel along the south coast of Jamaica to Black River, one of the country’s longest rivers. Visit YS Falls, swim in the natural pools, and take a river safari to see some of the natural splendor along the riverbanks. 

Take a river cruise to see some of the fascinating bird species and alligators that live in and around the water.

This may be strange for some tastes, but this dish is actually served at breakfast. It’s made up of salted codfish and the ackee fruit . They’re sauteed with onions, tomatoes, peppers, and spices to make an interesting flavor. 

3. Jamaican patty

Much like a turnover, this snack consists of a flaky crust and a mouthwatering filling. The traditional filling is beef, but nowadays you can choose to have chicken and fish, among others. 

3 phrases you’ll hear on the streets

English is Jamaica’s official language , but the locals definitely have a different way of saying things at times. Here are some sayings that you may not understand – even if they are being spoken in English. 

1. ‘Small Up Yuhself’

This is likely to be heard in the buses or other cramped spaces. It simply means that the person is trying to move past you and is asking you to ‘small up yourself’ and give them space. 

2. ‘Weh Yuh Ah Seh’

Loosely translated, this means ‘what you saying’, but it’s used more as ‘how you doing?’ So if you hear this from a local, they’re not asking you to repeat yourself, they’re just asking how you’re doing. 

3. ‘Ya Mon’

This is one of the best phrases to learn for your 7-day trip to Jamaica. It’s the equivalent of ‘no problem’ in English and often used as an agreement.
