Halloween ghostly tour explores University of Toronto campuses

Campus secrets and spectres one of four toronto haunted walks.

Tour guide for Haunted Walks

By Brittany Whittingham October 12, 2021

Every Thursday to Saturday, plus Sunday, Oct. 31, the Haunted Walk group will be giving ghost story tours around the University of Toronto downtown campuses.

Campus Secrets and Spectres is one of four tours they offer in Toronto. For $25 per adult and $20 per child, families can participate in a 75-minute tour of the campus grounds, learning about secret tunnels and deadly love stories.

One story you will likely hear if you attend is that of Ivan Reznikoff, one of the most famous ghosts at the University of Toronto.

Ahhh a Toronto ghost story! Former U of T students may know the story of Ivan Reznikoff, but you’ve never heard it like this! — ephemera (@ephemeraseries) August 18, 2021

“We cover the story about Ivan Reznikoff learning about what happened to him and how he was mad that someone was trying to steal his finance and how it lead to his death,” tour guide Tori Barrett said.

The walk will be done outside, with a limit of 15 people per group. People must still wear masks and keep two feet apart from those outside their households, if you get sick you can get your tour rescheduled. The company doesn’t currently need proof of vaccination but that rule can change at any moment, so they advise to have it on hand just in case.

Founded for fun by Glen Shackleton in 1995 in Kingston before spreading to other cities, Haunted Walks are now advertised by on Yelp and the Toronto attractions website and have amassed thousands of followers among their multiple social media accounts.

“I would say this is a better experience for those who don’t want the jump scare, to jump and then leave,” Barrett said. “It’s a great way to learn about different places among the city and hidden gems about these places. It’s for people who want to get a little spook and learn more about the city and the things that go untold.”

The company has a little something for everyone for those who want to be scared or learn more about their city. In addition to the walks, they host virtual campfires for people to relax at home and enjoy some scary stories same thing goes for their podcast, they have at home Séance’s.

These tours are one of the many ways Toronto residents can have safe spooky fun during the pandemic. Whether you go with friends or a family, this is something to look forward to this October.

Join us in exploring the city of toronto.

  • The Ghosts of the University of Toronto

A little education can be a ghastly business! The downtown campus of the University of Toronto has more than its own share of urban legends. The grand architecture and tree lined paths of the University certainly lend themselves to some ghostly storytelling. You’ll hear the famous Toronto story about two stonemasons, partners in their craft, but bloodthirsty competitors in love. There’s also the little heard tale of the little girl who is eternally lost in the locked up planetarium, and of the biscuit maker who kept his mistress sealed inside a secret chamber. Hear these and many other stories as you explore the Ghosts of the University of Toronto.

A great way to learn some history, get some exercise and hear spooky stories. Last night was atmospheric for a walk around the old buildings at Black Creek Pioneer Village, with a bright beautiful moon and chill in the air. I haven’t experienced anything on any of the prior walks, but odd things started in the very first building we entered when a chain that blocks off entrance to a bedroom started swinging back and forth on its own while the guide was talking. Nobody was near it at the time. Then in the “Minister’s house” I was the last person to enter and had to close the door. I paused to look around while doing so. There were only 4 of us in the group plus our guide and everyone had already moved on into the house to the right when I heard a loud bang in the room to my left, which is blocked off. It sounded like someone banging their fist on a desk or table and I thought someone had gone around to prank me. However, no one had, and there wasn’t another way into the room. I tried to re-create the sound, looked for a fallen item etc but couldn’t figure out what made the noise. The third odd thing is a photo I took in front of a house. All the photos I took turned out fine, except for one that came out a bit blurry despite taking in in the same way as the others. This photo shows a blue streak of light and what looks like a horse galloping out of the front door. All in all, an entertaining evening! Read more Written 26 November 2023

  • 548shenisec 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing! My boyfriend and I came here for the 6:15 PM Ghost tour! Our tour guide, Mia, was incredible and very nice. She would always state facts in response to the comments that some of the guests made. For instance, in the Burwick house, as you reach the top floor, it gets very hot. Some guests were curious about this, and Mia explained that pioneers built their homes in a way to insulate heat. I appreciated Mia “debunking” certain feelings/situations as to show that not everything experienced should be passed off as paranormal. However, when we were in the Manse house, Mia’s lantern began to randomly flicker, dimming and then shining bright. She said that it must be dying batteries, but her lantern was fine everywhere else outside the Manse house. I kept thinking about that throughout the tour. Because I have never myself experienced any sort of ghostly activity, I tried to keep an open-mind and anticipated that if I were to witness anything, that I would attempt to debunk it. While touring the church, Mia explained that people have witnessed orbs floating in the cemetery. I was not nervous, or panicking when she said this as I know that can affect how people begin to perceive/see things thereafter. I just absorbed her information and we moved along. When we toured the cemetery from the front gate, I was shining my flashlight that was given to us for the tour, towards the tombstones, and I had randomly seen a random ball of whitish/blue light float down from a tree near the front of the cemetery all the way down to the front gate. Now, I tried to keep mouth shut about it because I didn’t want people to think that I was reacting just to “react.” But, I could not stay quiet, because the natural human response to seeing something unexplainable is to say “What the f-!” Lol. I promise you guys that this was not dust, a bug, a leaf, or car lights. I also thought about it possibly being someone else’s flashlight, but I debunked this. A flashlight being shone out does not form a perfectly round circle mid-air, unless it has something to reflect off of in the background. In which this case, the cemetery was open field. Everyone’s flashlights just casted a wave of light, not small round circles. This orb was perfectly spherical and moving on its own accord, despite the wind (the wind would affect the direction that a bug or leaf would move, and the car lights would have had nothing to reflect off of, this was floating in mid air) as it had randomly appeared from the tree and had floated down to the front gate and disappeared. When I had seen it, I froze and said “Oh my God! I just seen something float down!” Mia turned to me and asked what was it, and I explained as above. She assured me that she believed me and encouraged me to continue to keep an open mind. I continued shining my light, but it did not reappear and I can affirm that I had definitely seen a spirit orb. I did not feel afraid or nervous, it just felt surreal and I took that experience home with me. Thank you Mia for such an amazing tour! 5 stars! 😊 Read more Written 29 October 2023

Are there ghosts at U of T? Maybe...

University College at night

Published: October 31, 2016

It's Halloween, and ghosts, ghouls, zombies and other supernatural creatures will be roaming through the streets of Toronto – and, legend has it – some of the buildings at the University of Toronto.

Are there ghosts at U of T? Read on and judge for yourself.

And, if you're really brave, you can take a walking tour of haunted places at U of T through Muddy York walking tours.

The Ghost of UC Quad

Legend has it that two of the stonemasons that worked on the construction of University College – Ivan Reznikoff and Paul Diablos – got into a murderous fight over a woman, which ended with Diablos stabbing Reznikoff and then hiding his body somewhere on site. Two years later, much of University College burned in the Great Fire, but workers digging through the rubble discovered something strange: inside a ventilation shaft a skeleton wearing a belt with a buckle stamped with the stonemason’s emblem. It’s said the ghost of Reznikoff still roams the UC quad at night.

The spirit that saved a life at Hart House

Working late one winter night, Hart House Theatre manager Paul Templin decided to sleep in his office and asked the security guards not to wake him. Sometime during the night, the door swung open and hit his cot. The door was glass-paned, so he could see there was someone standing behind it. The room was filling with smoke – the result of an electrical fire – so Templin quickly left and gathered with Hart House’s overnight staff on the sidewalk outside. He asked if anyone had been to his office; no one had. Templin credits the ghostly apparition for saving his life.

The mad woman of Christie Mansion

The large house at the northeast corner of Wellesley Street and Queen’s Park Circle that belongs to Regis College is said to have been home to a man who trapped a woman in a windowless room there. Eventually the woman went mad from the solitude and hanged herself. Decades later, rumours persist that a woman entering the room alone late at night will find that the door suddenly swings shut behind her and refuses to open. To escape, she must pound on the heavy door until her rescuer is able to easily open it from the other side.

Things that go bump in the night at Massey College

For the 18 years he was master at Massey College, Robertson Davies captivated the crowd at the annual Christmas party with spectral stories of his own invention. He sometimes told his fellow faculty members that, given his druthers, he’d haunt the college himself one day. Davies may have gotten his wish. Students past and present whisper of inexplicable phenomena within Massey’s walls that began the day that Davies did (or didn’t) leave us – wraithlike figures that disappear into thin air, objects that mysteriously move or show up in unlikely locations, and thuds and crashes coming from empty rooms.

The mysterious electrical engineer

As a first-year engineering student, Leo Comitale  was working with a peer on an electronics assignment in an old lab in the Wallberg Building. They were stumped when they noticed a man standing nearby they didn’t recognize. “He asked us what was wrong, and we told him we didn’t know. We had built the circuit exactly as described but it was not behaving as expected,” says Comitale. The mysterious man told the students to double-check their wires. When they did, they found one was broken. They replaced it and completed the assignment. When they turned to thank the man, he was no longer there. “No one else could remember seeing anyone who matched his description. Neither of us saw this man again during our time at the university,” says Comitale.

Eerie lights at Laidlaw Library

In the 1980s, students held a regular pub night on Saturdays in the basement of Laidlaw Library. One evening at about 1:30 a.m., the overnight watchman, Barry Breen , noticed that the library was in complete darkness; the pub night had ended. At 4 a.m., he looked up from a book, and was alarmed to see that all three floors of the library were lit-up. He called U of T police and advised them that a break-in was in progress. Two officers arrived within minutes and searched the library for half an hour. Neither of the library’s two entrances showed any signs of forced entry. Breen wondered if the librarian had set the light-timer incorrectly. The officers agreed that it was a plausible theory, except that the library was not equipped with a light-timer.

What Ghosts Hide Beyond the Beautiful Facade of Trinity College?

Members of the University of Toronto History Society ready for their Haunted Campus Ghost Tours

By Trinity Student Hannah Lank, on behalf of the U of T History Society

Trinity College is one of the oldest colleges at U of T, and so it follows that in addition to its formal history, it also has a spooky past, rife with the supernatural. Trinity College is one of the stops on the University of Toronto History Society’s annual Haunted Campus Ghost Tours, and we are excited to share a few of the stories that comprise the haunted history of Trinity College!

Trinity College was founded by Bishop Johannes Strachan in 1851, and was originally located on Toronto’s Queen Street West. Although Bishop Strachan died in 1867, he still returns to the College he founded. There have been many sightings of his ghost roaming the halls of Trinity to this day. It is said that he comes back each year to “check-in” around the anniversary of his death, which was on November 1, 1867.

The Trinity College Chapel is arguably one of the most beautiful parts of Trinity College, but it is also one of the most haunted. The most unnerving supernatural sightings have occurred here. Legend goes that one night, a student was playing the organ that is located at the top of the Chapel, but was distracted by some movement occurring at the front of the Chapel. Ignoring it and continuing to play, they again saw someone – or something – crawling on the floor up by the altar. They could also make out of a figure peeking up at them from behind a pew, then ducking back when the organ player turned to look. The student was disturbed enough to call campus police, who came to investigate but found no sign of any living person in or around the Chapel.

Within the Chapel, the Lady Chapel sees the most paranormal activity. The mysterious, infamous Gray Lady has appeared to many people in this spot. She has a greyish complexion and is said to sit in the pews or even wait outside the Chapel doors, as if waiting for service. She tends to vanish randomly. She is sometimes seen walking from the pew to the Lady Chapel and then she disappears.

We don’t want to paint too scary of a picture of Trinity College, but here’s one final spooky story. The steam tunnels were built to connect the main Trinity building to St. Hilda’s College on Devonshire so that students don’t have to walk outside in the rain or snow. The tunnels are now out of use, but they have frightened students for many years. Legend tells of a man that lives behind a mismatched section of brick in the tunnel. He escapes long enough to snatch up students walking down the path. For each soul he captures, a brick is said to be loosened, one at a time. Soon he will have enough to be freed from his confinement and at liberty to haunt the rest of the College.

Trinity is certainly beautiful, but its history makes it a ghostly haven for those supernatural elements that are at their most active at night and near Halloween-time. If you’re around the College this time of year, keep your eyes open – you never know what you may see!

The stories really made you think about the histories of the buildings. As a paranormal enthusiast, I had such a great time and I can’t thank Clarice enough. I will definitely be going back! 5 stars! 😊 Read more Written October 29, 2023

  • michellec534 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Inexplicable happenings and spooky fun at Black Creek Pioneer Village I’ve done most of the haunted walks in Toronto, Kingston and Ottawa and enjoyed them all. Read more Written November 26, 2023

  • Relax30753081955 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A spooky and enjoyable tour! My spouse and I have done 3 haunted walks over the years and this one was by far the best. Our guide Kate was very knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and a great storyteller. Since this tour involves going into the buildings and exploring, the probability that you will experience something unexplained goes up by orders of magnitude. Everyone in our group heard a loud bang when there was absolutely no one upstairs, which was something that even the most die hard skeptic would be hard pressed to explain. I would definitely revisit this tour again next year, and would like to make it an annual tradition. Two thumbs up! Read more Written October 13, 2023

We did the 8pm tour, the area really shuts down between 7-8 so if you are hanging for the 9pm your waiting options will be very limited. As tourists we really weren’t aware of that. But it also means you aren’t fighting w crowds to go along your route or hear your guide. Read more Written August 3, 2023

Lauren is a phenomenal guide, enlightening us with chilling tales of the past while guiding us through the present. Lauren is a brilliant story teller, captivating in their approach, adding humour and gravitas to the stories. They had us on tender hooks as we walked throughout all of the old buildings! This was an amazing experience that myself and 19 other adults did for my birthday. Definitely a unique, active experiences I won't soon forget! Honestly, it was so wonderful and the best way to spend a night, being educated AND scared with friends! Thanks Lauren! Read more Written July 31, 2023
  • globalwanderer2 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A walk into the past... with atmosphere cranked to the max setting My wife and I along with our 11-year old twin girls recently took part in the Toronto distillery district haunted walk as part of a birthday present for me from my wife. That said, here was our takeaway. ARRIVAL/LOCATION: For those who’ve never been to the distillery district in Toronto, it’s an area of the city dripping with atmosphere, and the perfect place to take in a ghost walk. With a history dating back well over 150 years into the past, paranormal occurrences are reported to be not all that uncommon here (a couple security guards I once spoke with said they’ve seen/heard many things they can’t fully explain). On this particularly night, being a warm summer Saturday, the district was abuzz with activity, restaurants and bars in full swing, and lots of people just looking to take in an evening stroll. Our tour group met outside the main gates, and was very easy to find. You simply can’t beat the distillery for atmosphere, five stars here. TOUR LEADER/GUIDE: Kit was an absolutely all-star and phenomenal guide. Donning the iconic black cloak and lantern in hand, they met us at the gate right on time and began the tour as soon as the head count was made. Our group that night was in and around 15 of us, so intimate enough not to feel overcrowded. Kit then lead us through the streets, down back alleys and past store fronts, enthusiastically regaling us with stories from the past, while painting a vivid picture of life back in the distillery’s heyday, and animating many of its many characters… some of which were purported to still walk the streets… All in all, Kit is an epic storyteller, and considered ourselves lucky to have had them. Five full stars, they made the haunted walk what is was, and can tell Kit truly loves what they do. THE EXPERIENCE/WALK: There were many instances of ominous foreboding, interspersed with wide eyed fascination from our girls and an around general creepiness permeating the air throughout the walk. Kit took us to many interesting locations and stops, navigating the nooks and crannies of the distillery with a familiarity that was very apparent. Lots of chilling stories, and on this particular night, we experienced a first. Now my wife and I have been on several haunted walks, including an overnight stay at a haunted hotel in Arizona that was once a hospital, but never really came across anything that made us question what exactly we were experiencing. Without making this review twice the length that it is, all I will say is there is a store called ‘The Ordinary’ that we stopped at during the tour. And when several of us noticed one of the hanging lights moving from side to side among the dozens of lights around it remaining perfectly motionless, it made quite a few of us question our eyes and sense of what exactly we were witnessing. As one tour guest exclaimed as he walked off, ‘well I’m a believer now!’… After the tour, my wife and I along with our girls went back to that very storefront window, and there it was, still moving on its own (we took video this time). We stood there with mouths wide open, until security walked by and shuffled us on. And this is just one instance, with the security guards telling us of other bizarre instances they’d encountered over the years. THE BOTTOM LINE: After taking in a previous Haunted Walk in Kingston, Ontario, we thought it might be fun to try another closer to home. The distillery being an attraction unto itself, the walk is truly the cherry topper, especially as an after dinner stroll. A truly unique experience that will get you up close and personal with the area’s intriguing and sometimes sordid past, the walk’s guides (like Kit) are what make the walk what it is. Five stars, loved it, well done Haunted Walks, we’ll be doing Black Creek next! Read more Written July 30, 2023

The stories and walk are fascinating, and I truly believe there are spirits there too. Clarisse was an amazing guide and very insightful and knew what she was doing and very respectful. She answered questions and told us about her personal experiences as well which was very interesting. I’m glad I had her doing my tour, she made the experience better.
