Israel Trips for Seniors

Thinking about making a trip to Israel , if you’re a senior traveller, is always an exciting prospect but it can be a bit daunting. This is especially true if you haven’t visited the Holy Land before - and it’s understandable that you’ll have a fair few questions before you make the decision to book a tour of Israel for seniors.

The good news is that it’s a fantastic country to visit if you’re a little older than the average visitor - it has wonderful, clement weather for many months of the year, a health care system that’s the envy of the world and well-developed infrastructure, including excellent, reliable and cheap public transport.  Even better, English is widely spoken throughout the country (and quite a bit of French and Russian too!) which is very reassuring for those who worry about language barriers.  All signs on the road are written in Hebrew, Arabic and English and almost every street vendor, restaurant waitress or taxi driver will be able to chat to you - not to mention younger people (who’ve often travelled abroad after their compulsory military service, and speak English fluently). All this aside, as a travel company that’s been in business since the 1990s, we understand that people can sometimes be a little nervous about travelling to this part of the world - and not just regarding the political situation but also because it’s the ‘Middle East’. Here, we’re going to look at some of the questions older travellers sometimes want answers to before they decide to take the plunge and head in our direction. We’ve also thrown in a few helpful tips and general information that we hope will help in your decision-making. Here we go:

What Should I Pack For My Trip to Israel?

1. Start off with an electric adaptor and voltage converter. Israel runs on 230 volts at 50 hertz, and the US runs on 120v. You can easily pick these up online, in a local hardware store in your own country or, of course, when you arrive in Israel (they are widely available in malls, pharmacies and local convenience stores). If you’re coming from Europe, it might be that you can use the sockets available - note, however, that the power prongs in Israel are rather unique - sometimes they will fit, and sometimes not. Ask your guide or a hotel staff member and, if in doubt, pick up an adaptor for a few shekels. 2. Comfortable shoes - there will be plenty of walking in places like Jerusalem’s Old City , as well as exploring ancient sites like Masada , the Galilee and Caesarea , so bring footwear you can count on. Don’t try breaking in a new pair on holiday either - you’ll end up with blisters. We suggest comfortable trainers/walking shoes or sturdy sandals, as well as some flip flops for the beach/a trip to the Dead Sea . 3. Appropriate clothing - in hot months (of which Israel has many) you really need a wide-brimmed hat and cotton or linen shirts, dresses and shorts. In Jerusalem and the Golan Heights , even in the summer, it can be breezy at night so bring a light sweater. You also need to remember that, when visiting holy sites in Israel (churches, mosques, synagogues) you need to dress modestly - women will need to cover their shoulders and should pack a scarf to use as a head covering.

Should I change money before I arrive in Israel?

It’s not essential but often worthwhile to have a small amount of shekels on you when you touch down and changing money at Ben Gurion Airport is very costly!

Can I pay for purchases in Israel in dollars?

Israel’s national currency is the shekel and you’ll be paying for most things with it, but in some places (e.g. Jerusalem’s Old City bazaar and some restaurants and hotels) dollars can be used.  The greenback is also welcome if you want to tip!

Is it easy to use credit cards in Israel?

There are ATMs everywhere in Israel if you want to withdraw cash, and the other good news is that almost everywhere now you can pay with a credit card. You’ll still need a bit of cash though, for local markets and buying ice cream from the guy on the beach!  Israel is high-tech so it’s also becoming easier to use apps like ‘Apple Pay.’

Israel’s History and Culture

Israel has a rich cultural, religious and historical tradition that stretches back thousands of years.  Jerusalem is sacred to 3 major world religions and when you throw the politics of the region into the mix, you have a topic that you can talk about for days.  Israel welcomes Christian pilgrims from across the globe, is home to a sizeable Muslim community and is also an epicentre of Jewish culture. Many of which you’ll encounter on a trip to Israel . Folklore, literature, art, music, not to mention the revival of the Hebrew language and the fact that the country absorbed millions of immigrants from across the world since 1948 all make Israel very special.

Holidays in Israel. Can I travel on Shabbat and religious holidays?

Shabbat - the Jewish day of rest - starts on Friday evening and runs for 25 hours - and most stores are closed during this time. Jerusalem comes to a standstill on Shabbat although in Tel Aviv many cafes and restaurants are open. There is no public transport in Israel on Shabbat - you can, however, take taxis. Shabbat is taken seriously in Israel - religious people do not use electricity or work in any fashion and even secular people use it as a time to relax, catch up with friends and family or just spend some quality time with themselves. In a world where we’re so used to 24/7 conveniences, this can be strange at first - but, trust us, you’ll enjoy it after you’ve had a taste of it. Religious Jewish holidays in Israel are also strictly observed - especially Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) when the country grinds to a halt (even Ben Gurion airport is closed).  No one drives (the highways are deserted) and it is impossible to buy even a cup of coffee. Pick up a book in advance and enjoy some downtime!

Tipping. Should I tip and how much?

Tipping is not mandatory in Israel but definitely expected.  Of course, it’s up to you but in general, give restaurant staff a 10-15% tip and if you’re travelling as part of a tour package, your guide will be thrilled with you tipping them.  On day trips, you can tip according to how satisfied you are with the individual.

Public Transport. Is it safe to use buses and trains?

Buses and trains are cheap, comfortable and efficient and whether you’re travelling independently, or taking a group tour in Israel , don’t be afraid to use them. Pick up a green Rav Kav card (widely available), charge it up with prepaid credit - especially if you have  48 hours free in Tel Aviv or a couple of days in Jerusalem , the buses or light rail are a great way to get around.

Please note, that you’ll probably see soldiers with guns in the street when you’re travelling. Don’t be afraid - everyone does military service in Israel and some entrances to train stations (and other public places) have guards and soldiers there for your security.

Tips for the Road. Any tips or hacks to make my trip go more smoothly?

1. Respect the local culture - remember that you are in the Middle East. Excessive drinking is frowned upon, whilst smoking is still widespread! In conservative Jerusalem, modest dress is expected whereas in Tel Aviv, anything goes. Learn a few Hebrew phrases beforehand - they aren’t obligatory but every local (and your guides) will love you for it.  2. Group travel - remember that pick-ups from other hotels (on day trips especially) might take 15-30 minutes. Nevertheless, we really recommend taking a tour package in Israel if you’re a senior - it’s more comfortable and convenient and you’ll be going at a reasonable group pace!  It’s also safer - since you’ll have a group leader who knows the country well - and this gives you added peace of mind.

Israel Tours For Seniors

Israel is a unique and culturally rich destination that offers a wealth of history, culture, and natural beauty. For seniors, a tour of Israel can be a rewarding and memorable experience, providing an opportunity to explore new places, learn about different cultures, and connect with fellow travelers. However, planning a tour for seniors requires careful consideration of their specific needs and preferences. In this guide, we will provide tips and advice for planning Israel tours for seniors, including how to choose the right pace, consider mobility needs, plan for comfort, choose experienced tour guides, and more. By following these tips and taking the needs of seniors into account, you can create a tour of Israel that is enjoyable, comfortable, and memorable for everyone in the group.

Choose the Right Pace

Seniors may not have the same energy levels as younger travelers, so it’s important to plan a tour that takes this into account. Consider choosing destinations and activities that are not too physically demanding, and avoid scheduling too many activities in one day. Allow for plenty of rest stops and breaks to avoid fatigue.

Consider Mobility Needs

Seniors may have mobility issues that can impact their ability to enjoy certain destinations or activities. When planning your tour, consider whether destinations are wheelchair-friendly or have other accommodations for mobility aids. Make sure transportation options are accessible and can accommodate any necessary equipment, such as walkers or scooters.

Plan for Comfort

Seniors may appreciate extra comfort features such as air-conditioned vehicles, comfortable seating, and accessible restrooms. When choosing hotels, look for options that offer amenities such as elevators, grab bars in the bathroom, and easy access to dining and entertainment options. Consider providing water bottles and snacks throughout the day to keep everyone hydrated and energized.

Choose Experienced Tour Guides

A knowledgeable and experienced tour guide can enhance the experience for seniors by providing context and background information about the destinations being visited. Look for guides who have experience working with seniors and who can provide engaging and informative tours. It may also be helpful to choose guides who speak the language of the group, if necessary.

Be Flexible

Seniors may have different needs and preferences than younger travelers, so it’s important to be flexible and adaptable when planning a tour. Consider offering optional activities or free time for seniors to explore on their own. Be open to making changes to the itinerary if needed, such as allowing for more time at a particular destination or adjusting the pace of the tour based on the needs of the group.

Consider Medical Needs

Seniors may have medical needs that require special attention. When planning your tour, consider whether any members of the group require specific medications or medical equipment, and make sure you have a plan in place to manage these needs. It’s also a good idea to have contact information for local medical facilities in case of an emergency.

Allow for Cultural Experiences

Israel is a diverse and culturally rich destination, and seniors may enjoy experiencing different aspects of Israeli culture. Consider including visits to museums, art galleries, or cultural festivals as part of your itinerary.

Plan for Comfortable Shoes

Seniors may need comfortable and supportive shoes for walking tours and other activities. It’s important to make sure everyone has appropriate footwear to avoid discomfort or injury.

Consider Dietary Needs

some seniors may have dietary restrictions or preferences that need to be taken into account. When planning your tour, make sure you have options available for those who require special diets or have food allergies.

Communicate Clearly

It’s important to communicate clearly with seniors throughout the tour to ensure they understand the itinerary, schedule, and any other important information. Consider providing written materials or using a tour guide with good communication skills to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Road to Jerusalem - 11 days Tour

Road to Jerusalem - 11 days

Awesome tour from start to finish. Our Jordan guide Ghadain was well organised and informative. Tour bus was comfy and accom met or exceeded expectations. Visiting Petra was the highlight. We had difficulties with a truck strike on at the time so our itinerary had some alterations to times and we missed out seeing a couple of things which was unfortunate. The only part of the tour which definitely required better organisation was Wadi Rum. Though a spectacular place, we spent four hours without a toilet and were not fully prepared for how cold it would get as the sun went down. Would have made sense to check into the accommodation first. Our tour guide for Israel, Maher, was awesome. He didn't overfeed us information and had a funny sense of humour. We did feel the last day was unnecessarily rushed though. Some additional time seeing more of Haifa and Old Jaffa Port would have been good. Overall though, I would highly recommend this tour and would not hesitate to book another On The Go tour.

Beautiful itinerary, good accommodation and good meals. Competent tour guides. Perhaps lunches stops in Israel could have been planned better.

Best of Israel & Jordan Tour

Best of Israel & Jordan

the tour is organized well, all the customer service is excellent. Only thing I wish the tour should offer is the hotel upgrade option. The hotels during the trip are mediocre, I don't mind to pay extra for the upgrade. But the option is not offered. This could be a major concern to book future trip.

What people love about Israel and Jordan Tours for Seniors

We explored parts of Israel and Jordan in early October 2023. The trip was coordinated by Tour Radar and Abraham Tours. We stayed at two Abraham Hostels on this tour ( one Tel Aviv and one in Jerusalem) as well as a Bedouin Camp in Jordan. The tours in Israel included Old CIty of Jaffa, Old Jerusalem, Masada and the Dead Sea. All amazing sites to see. We travelled into Jordan on the three day tour and saw/explored Mount Nebo, Petra and Wadi Rum. I can honestly say that all of the tours we did were some of the best i have ever done. The history and the scenery was spectacular. The food that was included/served was a little repetitive at the various places, however was pretty good (nobody got sick) and it would appear that Abraham Tours had sourced some of the cleanest/nicer places to eat. I would certainly condsider booking with Tour Radar/Abraham Tours in the future.
What a great trip every thing went brilliant, thank you
Awesome tour from start to finish. Overall though, I would highly recommend this tour and would not hesitate to book another On The Go tour.

Tour of Jerusalem for Seniors

Private tour of jerusalem for seniors.

jeruslaem golf cart

However, a few years ago a golf cart service was established and since then has greatly improved the experience of the tour. At $100 per hour, the cart can take up to 5 passengers through most of the Old City attractions. This service is not limited only to disabled people. It is also very appreciated by our senior tourists.

My Grandparents Have Been Traveling for 60 Years — Here Are the 11 Comfy Items They Always Pack As Retirees

Keep reading for travel advice from my grandparents who say they’re in the “golden age” of their life.

israel tours for senior citizens

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

Being a travel writer, it only makes sense that my passion for exploration runs in the family — after all, where else could I have inherited from? Both sets of my grandparents are avid travelers, taking on a number of international trips per year to destinations like Thailand , Italy , France , and so much more.

My travel-loving grandparents have entered the “golden age” of their life, as my grandpa refers to it, enjoying retired life by exploring the world . But of course, that ability to travel with ease — and joy — comes with a fool-proof list of travel accessories to make the journey as smooth as humanly possible. With so much experience under their belts, I’ve tapped my grandparents to curate a list of their travel must-haves, including everything from their favorite slip-on sneakers to a portable walking cane in case of emergencies. Keep reading for their go-tos starting at just $5.

Zomake Portable Metal Shoe Horn

“I don’t go anywhere without my pocket shoe horn,” my grandpa told me on our phone call the other night. I should’ve known it was going to be his first bit of advice to share with other retiree travelers, because for my entire life he’s had shoe horns littered all over his house (and in his bags) to assist him in putting on his loafers, sneakers, and other shoes everywhere from the front door to the rental cabin to the doctor’s office. He sent me the link to this handy $5 portable one, and even though I’m just 24 I’m considering adding it to my cart to make my life a bit easier, too.

Kizik Madrid Slip-on Sneakers

My other grandpa doesn’t keep a shoe horn on him anymore because he has replaced nearly all of his shoes with these slip-on sneakers that he calls “the best invention since sliced bread,” and says that he “wishes he’d had a pair his entire life.” His devout love for these sneakers has also turned my grandma into a convert, and now the two happily sport their Kiziks all over Thailand walking from food stall to food stall.

Samsonite Freeform 21-inch Carry-on Suitcase

My grandparents don’t have patience for heavy, squeaky luggage, and that’s why they swear by this Samsonite carry-on that comes equipped with four smooth-gliding wheels and a spacious-yet-compact build to keep all of their belongings conveniently packed. This suitcase weighs in at just over 6 pounds, which means that they don’t have to worry about lugging around a heavy bag and risk hurting themselves. They each have one of their own — and they’ll probably never travel with any other bag.

Vera Bradley Triple Zip Hipster Crossbody Bag

Vera Bradley

As much as my grandmother loves her fancy shoulder bags, she says they’re “too heavy for long trips now.” That’s why she now travels with a lightweight crossbody bag that’s still spacious enough to hold onto her phone, passport, and other personal belongings but won’t weigh her down. She loves this Vera Bradley one for its “fashionable look and ability to keep [her] things close.”

Auvon Travel Pills Organizer

When you’re traveling, it’s important to keep all of your pills in one convenient spot. My grandparents have one of these boxes that not only organizes all of their medications by the day of the week, but also by the time of day (morning and night) to streamline taking — and remembering — your medications. My grandma also advised me to tell other travelers to “pack an extra few days worth of medication just in case your trip gets delayed or extended.” Oh, and this set just so happens to be on sale for $8 for Prime Members.

Ostrich Pillow Compression Socks

My grandparents have found that compression socks help relieve some of the discomfort and swelling that comes from prolonged restricted movement by stimulating circulation in your legs. And while they’ve tried a variety of pairs (including this Charmking Compression Sock Set of Eight ) their current favorite is this one from Ostrich Pillow that I introduced them to. They absolutely love these socks for their “impressive comfortable compression,” so much so that they feel confident enough in them to brave our upcoming 24+-hour travel day to Thailand.

Vaunn Portable Folding Cane

My grandpa sometimes needs extra assistance walking, especially during long travel days, and that’s why he always keeps this convenient portable folding cane on him. We got it for him last year, and since then he keeps it on him if his knee acts up or needs some help with balance. He finds that it's better than traveling with his typical cane because he doesn’t have to worry about “a larger one taking up too much space in the airplane cabin or through TSA.”

Techshare Magnifying Glass and Light Keychain

On a recent visit with my grandpa, he pulled out this handy dandy two-in-one magnifying glass and light at the dimly lit restaurant we were at and used it to read the menu and order his meal. I asked him when he started carrying it around, and he said his friend recommended it a year ago for reading handouts and other information while on-the-go. I found it utterly genius, and even better that it hooks onto his keys — all for a mere $8. It’s now a must-have for him that he can’t recommend enough to make travel smooth for other retirees.

Cabeau Evolution S3 Neck Pillow

I gave my grandma this neck pillow last Christmas to replace her old one, and when I asked her how it held up, she said it’s so comfortable that as soon as she sits down on a flight, she immediately falls asleep and stays asleep the entire time. She’s also a fan of its convenient carrying bag that she said allows her “to keep it in her purse to rest in the car” as well.

Loft Drop Shoulder Cardigan

Both sets of my grandparents live in South Florida, and between the humid heat and blasting indoor AC, a good cardigan is an everyday and travel staple for them both. They both love styles like this lightweight one from Loft (and both happen to absolutely love everything from Loft) to add a bit of cozy warmth no matter where they are. Even better, this stylish one is on sale for $33 right now.

Quince Women’s Linen Pants

Toward the end of my call with my grandma, I asked her if there was any other advice that she’d  like to share, and she said that travelers “shouldn’t waste their time with jeans or uncomfortable pants,” and instead should opt for a pair of pull-on pants that go on easy while remaining comfortable and breathable. She actually found this specific $40 pair from Quince in an advertisement online and has been obsessed ever since. I mean really, she has three pairs and counting.
