(formerly the Filipinas Foundation, Inc.), Ayala Museum has taken center stage among private museums in the country. In 1974, the Ayala Museum building located along Makati Avenue opened its doors to the public. At present, the Ayala Museum building sits on the corner of Makati Avenue and De la Rosa Street, just next to Greenbelt.

Massive as it is, the building’s quite easy to navigate due to the various signs and staff waiting to guide you. As recommended by the museum staff, the best way to explore the museum is to start at the fourth floor and make your way down. Each floor features a different focus, from historical , archeological , ethnographic , fine arts , numismatics , to ecclesiastical exhibits. The museum houses permanent exhibitions in their collection as well as temporary exhibits that run for weeks to months at a time.

Among the permanent exhibitions are Gold of the Ancestors: Precolonial Treasures in the Philippines , Skeins of Knowledge , Threads of Wisdom , and Ceramics and Cultural Currency: Exchanges of Pottery and Prestige which are all part of the museum’s Crossroads of Civilizations feature. For the visual learners out there, you’ll enjoy the The Diorama Experience of Philippine History , a permanent exhibition which has been a part of the Ayala Museum since 1974. Through a series of 63 tableaus, you’ll get a play-by-play of Philippine history, courtesy of woodcarvers from Paete, Laguna.

Perhaps what has drawn visitors to Ayala Museum the most in the past months is the presence of Juan Luna’s Hymen, oh Hyménée! . Considered a holy grail among art aficionados in the Philippines, this 132-year-old painting was believed to be lost. Today, it sits at the 2nd Floor of the Ayala Museum, honored with its own special exhibit.

Right by the Greenbelt entrance of the museum is Museya Café . This al fresco café takes its lead from Margarita Forés, Asia’s Best Female Chef in 2016, as dubbed by Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. It’s a great spot to grab a snack like sandwiches, pastries, and desserts along with locally-sourced coffee after going around the museum.

Yuchengco Museum

Located within the RCBC Building along Ayala Avenue, Yuchengco Museum was built to house the art collection of Alfonso T. Yuchengco, who was a diplomat, businessman, and patron of the arts. At the same time, the museum also highlights Yuchengco’s career, especially as an Ambassador. Three collections are on permanent display here: Masters Gallery , Rizal Collection , and the Yuchengco Group of Companies Collection .

The Masters Gallery features the works of recognized Filipino painters and highlights three artists: Juan Luna , Fernando Amorsolo , and Carlos “Botong” Francisco . Meanwhile, the Rizal Collection is dedicated to the national hero, Jose Rizal. It showcases photographs, letters written by the Rizal family, and furniture and other memorabilia that belonged to Leonor Rivera, who is said to be Rizal’s first love. On display as part of the Yuchengco Group of Companies Collection (YGC) are memorabilia from Alfonso Yuchengco’s diplomatic career, his Chinese heritage, and the history of the YGC.

Yuchengco Museum also hosts temporary exhibits. During our most recent visit, a section of the museum showed pieces from the Philippine Art Awards, an open art competition for Filipino Artists.

Salcedo Weekend Market

The Salcedo Weekend Market has been a consistent go-to in Makati since 2004. On Saturday mornings, visitors lug around their baskets and stroll the vicinity of the Jaime Velasquez Park occupied by the market. Salcedo Village comes alive as community members sell their wares or eat their way through half the world via the various stalls offering food in paper boxes and microwaveable containers. Even before you reach the actual area, you’ll know you’re in the right place: the line of white tents on the streets are a dead giveaway!

A myriad of food choices, fresh produce, and other local products are available at the weekend market. Aside from being a neat Saturday activity, you’re also welcome to grab your market needs here. They even have baskets and push carts available if you’re in for some serious shopping!

However, consider yourself warned: the food options available here can be a bit overwhelming. There are snacks, drinks, and full meals from local to international cuisines. Among the things we tried are vegetable curry samosas from Saffron Plates PH, which we got at P100 for three pieces. We also bought a strawberry lassi (P130) and beef kebab biryani (P230) from Azaan Halal Cuisine. But the highlight of our morning was the Pad Thai from Chang Thai. For P280, you’ll get a big serving of pad thai with either shrimp or chicken toppings. Honestly, the long line to order spoke for itself.

Kids can be hard to entertain when traveling, so it’s a good idea to have an activity just for them in your itinerary. Dream Lab is a simulation playground that was opened in 2022 at Ayala Malls Circuit in Makati. Here, both kids and kids-at-heart can get hands-on experience on entrepreneurship.

Dream Lab fashions itself as an immersive play city called Dreamville. Here, kids have access to kid-friendly establishments like a market, a pharmacy, a hardware store, Dream Farm, Dream Hotel, Dream Bank, Creative Lab, and more. This is where kids will learn and experience mixing household products, using a POS machine, and other interactive activities. Multiple photo spots are also available around Dream Lab.

Rolyo Sk8 House

Why walk when you can skate?

If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, put on some roller skates at Rolyo Sk8 House , a mini rink and dance skate studio located in Ayala Malls Circuit Makati. The rink is open to beginners so you don’t have to worry if you don’t have any experience with skating. Skates can be expensive, but this skate house let’s you rent a pair. Pro tip: make sure to wear thick socks to avoid callouses!

Rolyo Sk8 House offers a Learn to Skate Class (P450) if you’re intent on learning this new skill. However, if you just want to try it for fun, they also have a General Session which will allow you to skate on your own for 2 hours for P150 (or P250 if you’re renting skates too). And if that sounds too short, you can also avail a General Session for 4 hours which costs P300 (or P400 including skate rentals).

Since the rink is small, they allow a limited number of people per session. It’s best to book your session or skate class in advance. You can checkout their Facebook page for their updated schedule and for bookings.

Poblacion is a barangay (a small administrative district) in Makati City. Historically, it was the first settlement in the city and the center of the local government. To this day, the city hall of Makati is still situated in Poblacion. But over the years, its administrative duties have taken the backseat as this tiny powerhouse evolved into a night life and food hub .

After a day of exploring the city, Poblacion is the perfect place for a night cap. Whether you’re just looking to have some good food, have drinks with friends, or are in the mood to party, you’ll find a spot here. Restaurants, bars, and coffee shops are scattered around the neighborhood. There’s a wide range of options here with countless restaurants offering different cuisines. Whether you’re looking for Korean, Japanese, Mexican, or Filipino food, you can find a place to dine and have a few drinks here.

Among the popular spots in Poblacion is Commune , a café and bar serving local coffee, Filipino food, and other light meals perfect for brunch or afternoon snacks. If you’re looking to try local drinks along with some Pinoy dishes, try Alamat Filipino Cuisine or Agimat Foraging Bar and Kitchen . For some Japanese food with a twist, head over to Japonesa , a fairly new restaurant in Poblacion serving Japanese-Peruvian cuisine.

Legazpi Active Park

Located in Legazpi Village, Legazpi Active Park is a pocket park within the Makati Central Business District. It’s a privately owned public space just a short walk away from Greenbelt. In the past, it was known as the venue for the Legazpi Sunday Market, a weekend market very similar to Salcedo Weekend Market. However, it was transferred to another location when the parking lot beside the park began construction in 2019.

As its name suggests, the park is the place to go to for some active fun. It has a playground for kids, a jogging path, and an amphitheater. It’s not uncommon to see people enjoying a bit of sun, jogging, playing frisbee, or having a picnic, especially with its close proximity to residential areas. The park is pet-friendly, so there are also people walking their dogs. When you visit the park, take note of the park rules, such as avoiding loud noise and music so as not to disturb other guests. If you decide to have a picnic, make sure to dispose your trash properly.

Washington Sycip Park

Washington Sycip Park is another privately owned public park just across Legazpi Active Park. Despite being a stone’s throw away from each other, these two have a very different atmosphere. Compared to Legazpi Active Park, Washington Sycip has a more chill and relaxing feel brought about by the many ornamental plants and trees surrounding the park.

Named after Washington Sycip, a Filipino accountant and banker, the park opened in 2006. It was presented to Sycip on his 85th birthday in recognition of his contributions to the country’s economy. Inside the park, you will find gazebos, benches, and a pond with a bridge over it. Surrounding these are plants and trees endemic to the Philippines.

While there are quite a few pocket parks in Makati, Washington Sycip Park makes its mark with the rainbow eucalyptus trees towering over multiple areas in the park. Its bark itself a work of art, this natural marvel will have your eyes roaming the park just to catch a glimpse of its colors. Apart from the greenery, there are also sculptures here by Filipino sculptor Impy Pilapil . One that stands out in the park is the Mangrove Nature’s Embrace, an artwork made of steel pipes inspired by mangroves.

Guadalupe Ruins

Widely known as the only Christian nation in Southeast Asia, the Philippines has no shortage of churches. In truth, Manila, the country’s capital, lays claim to quite a few, so much so that its already jam-packed streets become even more populated during Visita Iglesia (Seven Churches Visitation).

While it may escape the notice of many, a quaint Baroque Roman Catholic church sits within the streets of Makati City. The Guadalupe Church or Guadalupe Ruins is one of the oldest churches you’ll find in the metro, quietly tucked away in the neighborhood of Barangay Guadalupe Viejo.

Formally called Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church , this Roman Catholic parish has been around since 1629. A massive earthquake made a significant damage to the church in 1880, with the masonry of its roof collapsing unexpectedly. It was later rebuilt in 1882 by Rev. Jose Corujedo and repaired again, post-World War II.

Today, the parish church is under the Archdiocese of Manila, with a monastery at its side. With its rich history and beautiful facade, it’s no wonder that couples in Metro Manila trust it to witness their weddings.

Art Galleries

While Makati is known for the value it brings to the business world, it also has a lot to offer in terms of art and culture. Scattered across (and even within!) its towering skyscrapers are multiple museums and art galleries. Chino Roces Avenue Extension is particularly famous for its string of modern art galleries showcasing the work of emerging Filipino artists. Make good use of your afternoon and do a gallery-hop! It’s possible to do 4-6 of these in one afternoon (We know because we tried! Haha)

A lot of these galleries exhibit contemporary art and do not have entrance fees. If you’re lucky, you might even come across some of the artist while you’re viewing their works. Ayala Triangle Gardens

In the middle of the Makati Central Business District’s urban chaos is the Ayala Triangle Gardens . This triangular public garden is owned by Ayala Land. It covers a 2-hectare expanse that was once part of the Nielson Field, an airport in Manila pre-World War II. Ayala Triangle Gardens straddles Paseo de Roxas, Makati Avenue, and Ayala Avenue.

While this park is a popular events venue in Makati, it is most known for its annual Festival of Lights, which illuminates the area from November to January. Its day-to-day, however, is a bit more mundane: joggers make use of its well-maintained cement paths and groups hang out at the available tables and benches. A lane of restaurants with al fresco dining is also found here.

Shopping Malls

Shopping malls are truly a Makati staple at this point. The Makati Central Business District alone is home to quite a few. Some are just small malls situated below residential buildings. Others are shopping centers big enough to spend the whole day in.

If you take the MRT 3 or EDSA Carousel bus and get off at Ayala, you can walk through all these malls. Starting from SM Makati to Glorietta to Landmark , and finally, to Greenbelt . Despite being right next to each other, these malls all have different vibes and sometimes widely different stores. But one thing is for sure: you’ll find everything you need in these malls, with their wide array of shops, restaurants, and activities.

If you’re looking to get groceries, you can head over to SM, Landmark, or Rustan’s Supermarket. Glorietta and Greenbelt both have a lot of restaurant options and movie theaters. Greenbelt is also the mall you should visit if you plan to do some luxury shopping. If you’re in need need of some pampering, you’ll also find nail salons, massage places, and hair salons in these malls. Even health and dental clinics are located here!

How to Get To Makati

There are multiple transportation options that can take you to Makati depending on where you’re coming from. It’s also best to consider your specific destination in Makati. However, a good starting point would be One Ayala, since a few of the attractions in this list are just within Ayala Center. From here, you can easily make your way to other parts of Makati.

By Edsa Carousel

The EDSA Carousel Bus makes a stop at One Ayala. The are two stations in Cubao: Nepa Q. Mart and Main Avenue. Go to the Southbound loading area. The buses will have a sign board that says “PITX or MOA.”

Right by Farmers Plaza in Cubao is MRT Araneta Center Cubao station. You can board the southbound train here and get off at Ayala Station.

Makati is a great destination all-year-round because unlike island destinations in the Philippines, you can still do activities here during the rainy season.

But if you want to explore Makati including its outdoor attractions fully, take note of the months with the sunniest days. Read on to find when are the best seasons to go to Makati, what's the climate and weather like, and what to wear: 

Holiday Season  | September to December

However, traffic can get worse than usual during the Christmas season. It is also during this time when a lot of people flock the malls for their holiday shopping.

Dry Season | January to May 

During the dry season, the temperature in Makati is warm. Take note that the hottest months in Metro Manila, in general, are from March to mid-May. During these months, the temperature could go up to 34°C during the day and dip to 26°C at night.

During the rainy season (June to October), rainy days are about 15 days every month with the lowest temperature at 25°C at night. Make sure to check for weather updates as well for the forecast on the days of your trip.

What to Wear 

Most people in Makati wear corporate or office attires, but as a tourist, you can dress casual breathable clothes, especially during the dry months. You only need to wear formal clothes and closed shoes if you're entering the office buildings since the majority of them have strict dress codes. 

If you're in the malls or outdoors at night, especially during the holiday season or rainy season, it's best to bring a light jacket with you to keep you warm.

Makati is located in the central part of Metro Manila and is accessible from neighboring cities and airports. If it's your first time to go here, it might be confusing as to which transportation option is best for you because of the many choices available. In this section, we'll break down for you the different ways to go to Makati:  

Regular buses are coming from North and South of Metro Manila that passes by Makati. Look out for the signage that says Ayala LRT if you want a bus that will travel through Ayala Avenue or one of the significant roads inside Makati. 

These days, the Premium P2P bus service, an initiative by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has given commuters and even tourists the ease and peace of mind of traveling around Metro Manila.

One-way fare starts at PHP100. You can check the schedules and routes of P2P buses here that go to/from Makati. Pick-up and drop-off terminals in Makati for P2P buses are usually in malls like Greenbelt and Glorietta. 

By Train 

If you don’t mind roughing it, take the Metro Rail Transit (MRT). Taking the train is, by far, the cheapest way to go to Makati from other major cities of Metro Manila like Quezon City , Pasig, Mandaluyong, and Pasay.

The MRT line travels along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue or EDSA, and you can get off at Ayala Station (near Makati CBD) if you're heading to Makati. One-way fare starts at PHP13.00.

Regular taxi or cabs ply the major thoroughfares of Metro Manila, including Makati. All metered taxis and cabs in the city have a standard flag-down rate of PHP40.00. 

If you're coming from the airport, you will have the option of a regular metered white taxi/cab or the premium yellow taxi/cab.

Useful Apps 

Flagging down taxi or cabs can be difficult, especially during rush hour in Makati. Foreign travelers might also find riding public transportation challenging when going to Makati so we highly suggest using these apps when traveling to Makati.

This way, you can sit back, relax, and let someone else navigate the Metro Manila and Makati traffic.

Taxi/Cab, Car, and Carpool Booking Apps 

For a more comfortable ride, you can hail a cab or use transportation apps like Grab or Owto that offer accredited taxi/cabs, private cars, and carpool. You can also book this if you're coming from the airports. Do take note that the fares vary on the time of day you make a booking. 

Motorcycle Booking App

If you're only carrying a compact backpack or small bag and don't mind riding a motorcycle, you can download the app Angkas . If it's raining, it's best not to ride this, so you don't get drenched and for your safety as well since roads can be slippery.

Jeepney 

The classic Philippine jeepneys travel around the major routes of Makati that go through different paths within the city. Fare starts at PHP9.00. Make sure to check first which jeepney route you have to ride to get to your destination. You might also need to ride more than one jeepney depending on your goal. 

The regular buses mentioned above that come from neighboring cities can also be an option when traveling in the town if you're going to places that are near major roads in Makati.

You have the opportunity to ride the northbound or southbound buses depending on your destination. Northbound buses have signages that say “Fairview,” while southbound buses have signages that say, LRT Buendia.

Similar to the taxi and cabs mentioned above, you can also flag these down when going around Makati. Locals even opt to ride these when in Makati since they want the convenience of not transferring to multiple jeepneys or buses anymore. For easier booking, you can also use apps like Grab or Owto . 

Motorcycle Service

Since destinations within Makati are only minutes away but the build-up of traffic adds up significant time to travel. That's why some commuters opt to ride motorcycles instead through the Angkas app.

By Foot 

Makati CBD has an elevated passageway called Dela Rosa Walkway, along Dela Rosa St., parallel to Ayala Avenue (one of the main roads in the city). This walkway connects you to some of the tourist spots and landmarks in the town.

From the malls connected to Ayala MRT Station to Makati Medical Center (at the end of Ayala Avenue). Again, make sure to check your Makati map and pay close attention to the street signs in the walkway, so you don't get lost.

This other half of Makati CBD is where you can find the big green space of Ayala Triangle Gardens. This area is just a walk away from the watering hole of Poblacion. 

Poblacion  

A few minutes of walk or drive from Poblacion will take you to Rockwell Center most known for being the location of Powerplant Mall.

Makati City is found at the heart of Metro Manila , bounded by the cities of Mandaluyong, Pasig, Taguig , Pasay , and Manila and the municipality of Pateros.

Being one of the business districts of the country, Makati is a bustling city where a number of financial, commercial, and economic centers are found.  Major banks, corporations, and multinational companies are based in Makati.  The city is also home to luxury hotels, restaurants, and malls carrying both local and international brands.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Makati City summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Makati City in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. However, you may want to avoid traveling to the city in December as it definitely gets crowded during Christmas season.

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while in Makati City.

1 | Spend a day at Greenbelt

The eight largest shopping mall in the Philippines, Greenbelt comprises five buildings: three are enclosed areas and two with open-air shopping areas.  The mall is the top destination for high end retail and international luxury brands such as Kiehl’s, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, DKNY, Kenneth Cole, Escada, and many more.  There is also an array of restaurants that appeal to various types of palates.  In total, the mall houses more than 300 stalls for the ultimate shopping, entertainment, and leisure experience.

Found at the center of the complex is the Greenbelt Park where people can enjoy the landscape and the relaxing sight of flowers, plants, and fish ponds.  You can also visit and pray at the Santo Niño de Paz Greenbelt Chapel, an open-air structure where masses are held everyday.

2 |  Explore Glorietta Mall Complex

Like Greenbelt, Glorietta is also located in Ayala Center and is divided into five sections housing a variety of shops and restaurants as well as residential areas and office spaces.  Be it local brands or international retailers, fast food chains or high end dining, truly there are lots to explore in Glorietta Mall Complex.

3 | Visit the museums

There are several museums to visit in Makati, the most notable is the Ayala Museum found in the heart of Makati Central Business District.  It is a great place to know everything there is to learn about the Philippine history, culture, art, and heritage starting from the ancient times up to the present.  Another to visit is the Yuchengco Museum.  Built in 2005, the museum features the artworks of Ambassador Alfonso Yuchengco as well as works of Filipino artists Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo, and Carlos Botong Francisco.

4 | See the art galleries

Art enthusiasts will surely love wandering around the city as there are several art galleries around.  First is the Finale Art File, one of the oldest art galleries in the country.  It’s been open since 1980’s showcasing various artworks such as paintings, sculptures, and installations of artists both established and new.  ArtistSpace Gallery and Prism Gallery house works of new artists.  Other galleries located in the city are the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Michael Yves Art Gallery, and The Drawing Room.

5 | Relax at the parks

Makati may be surrounded with high rise buildings but it is not devoid of green spaces to relax and appreciate the beauty of nature.  Aside from Greenbelt Park, people can go to Ayala Triangle Gardens to enjoy the greenery or break a sweat by running or working out.  Not too far away is the Washington Sycip park in Legazpi Village.  The park has a koi pond and a gazebo where you can relax.  Also found in the park are several sculptures by Filipino artist Impy Pilapil.  Other options for outdoor areas are Salcedo Park and Legazpi Active Park.

6 | Shop at the Power Plant Mall

Can’t get enough shopping? The four-level shopping mall may just be what you need to indulge.  It houses international brands such as Michael Kors, DKNY, Rolex, Salvatore Ferragamo, and more.  Of course, there are several dining options, cinema theaters, and an events place.

7 | See the pretty churches in the city

Some of the prettiest churches in the country are found in Makati.  Located in Magallanes Village is the St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori known for its interesting architecture which consists of curved lines.  The one-of-a-kind St. Andrew the Apostle Church in Bel-air II features a butterfly-shaped floor plan while Don Bosco Church in San Lorenzo Village is unique for its geometric silhouette and a roof that resembles a leaf.

Santuario de San Antonio Parish, National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ, and the historical Nuestra Señora de Gracia Church (formerly known as Nuestra Señora De Guadalupe) are other churches to see in Makati City.

With several branches in Makati and all over Metro Manila, Wildflour Cafe and Bakery offers an assortment of Western baked goodies such as cakes, donuts, cronuts, pies, and cookies as well as vegan options including salads, smoothies, and shakes.  Don’t miss their Wildflour breakfast, fried chicken and waffles, chewy chocolate chip cookies, creme brulee scones, and Nutella danish.

2 | Hummus Elijah

Hummus Elijah is a joint offering Middle Eastern favorites such as hummus, falafel sandwiches, and shakshuka.  They take pride in using the freshest ingredients to offer customers the best-tasting and authentic dishes.  The joint opens early and closes late therefore a good option for sudden night cravings.  Mediterranean herbs and spices are also being sold inside.

3 | Blackbird

Standing at the site of the country’s first commercial airport which is the Nielson Tower, Blackbird is a stylish dining destination unique for its aviation theme.  It has a lovely and elegant ambience with warm and friendly service.  The restaurant has an extensive menu and some of the must-try dishes include branzino filet, crab cakes, and steaks.  The price range is a bit high but the quality of food makes up for its price.

4 | Benjarong Thai Restaurant

Benjarong is a fine dining restaurant located at Dusit Thani Manila.  It’s the best place in the city to enjoy authentic traditional Thai cuisine fused with modern cooking techniques.  Aside from the dining areas, Benjarong has a bar and live cooking section for that exciting dining experience.  Try the spicy tom yang soup, tiger prawns fried rice, kluy gung, and 72-hours beef curry.  

5 | UMU Japanese Restaurant

Like Benjarong, UMU Japanese Restaurant is also found in Dusit Thani Manila.  The authentic Japanese dishes the restaurant serves is complemented by its oriental setup that resembles a warm and homey Japanese house.  Some of the best dishes to try are sashimi, dragon maki, and wafu steak.

6 | People’s Palace

Can’t get enough of Thai cuisine?  Another dining hotspot for you to try is the People’s Palace in Greenbelt 3.  Best to try their Pork Satay, prawn pomelo salad, prawn spring rolls, tom yum goong, and chicken pandan.

7 | The Wild Poppy

With a garden ambience on the rooftop, The Wild Poppy is a lovely dining destination with high quality and tasty food perfect for hanging out with your friends.  The restaurant serves modern Filipino and Asian favorites like Kim and Reuben (Reuben sandwich), yaki tomorokoshi, and chicken ren damn.

8 | Tapenade

Found in Discovery Primea, Tapenade is the melting pot of Mediterranean cuisine in the city.  Be it Italian favorites, tasty Spanish paella, or sweet and savory Moroccan dishes, you will surely get to try these at Tapenade.  Don’t miss their Salad Room where you can enjoy the all-you-can-eat salad.  It is one of the most popular attractions of the restaurant.  From the main lunch menu, try their stone baked feta cheese, bacon wrapped dates, and of course their pizzas.

9 | El Chupacabra

Craving for tacos?  Head to El Chupacabra for that authentic Mexican street taco as well as barbecue and affordable beers.  They take pride in their street taco which is made of soft corn tortilla and comes in various fillings such as carne asada, camaron, carnitas, chorizo, lengua, and many others.  

10 | Gaja Korean Kitchen

With so many Koreans all over the Philippines, this list wouldn’t be complete without a Korean restaurant.  Gaja Korean Kitchen is an upscale restaurant with a friendly vibe.  While the restaurant serves traditional Korean dishes, their take on cooking technique is more modern to stand out among the other Korean restaurants in the city.  Try their Galbi Jjim but make sure to come early as they only serve 80 plates per day.  Customers sing praises for this restaurant for their exceptionally tasty foods.

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB . 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!  

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

• Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
• Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
• Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
• Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
• Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
• Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
• It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
• Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
• Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
• Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Makati City or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

1. Legazpi Sunday Market – sample artisan food and vintage items

Back in full force in 2023, Legazpi Sunday Market offers you a wide range of gourmet and artisan food, fresh produce, and unique, artsy and vintage items in Makati City.

You’ll see leather goods created by disabled craftspeople that’ll make thoughtful souvenirs, coffee jelly and iced coffee drinks made from beans you can buy for your home pantry, and mini-performances and celebratory decor whenever a festival is rolling around.

The market is even pet-friendly, and you may spot pet products such as drinking bowls and treats on sale.

You can easily indulge in a hearty meal, drink, or dessert here for under P500 per person – we’ve spotted shawarmas, lechon and rice, fishballs, fruit drinks, and more – or purchase cute accessories, handmade products, and vintage finds. Or if you’d like to learn from scratch, Rolyo welcomes all beginners or experienced skaters to its mini-skating rink and skate dance studio. And there is nothing much you can do about it except for doing what gravity does simply enjoy. Yes! Or maybe no! It’s just an illusion and has nothing to do with the gravity! This place is called “The Upside Down Museum”. Here nothing seems normal and rules of gravity completely shattered. This is because of the design of this museum. This is basically an illusion museum where things seem to be floating here and there, leaning in uneven way and everything is simply upside down. This is really a fun place to be at!

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said the inauguration of Belo Medical Group Philippines’ newest facility at One Ayala Mall in Makati City will help promote medical tourism in the Philippines.

“We are very happy with the launch of Belo NEXA, which provides next generation and truly, the future of medical tourism and wellness in the Philippines, which well aligns with the Marcos administration’s prioritization of medical health and wellness,” Frasco said.

The DOT and Belo Medical Group signed a memorandum of agreement in early February this year to enhance the quality of tourism services through medical and wellness tourism.

The agreement solidifies the partnership between the government and Belo Medical Group, supporting efforts to promote Filipino hospitality and expand the country’s medical tourism offerings.

Frasco was joined by founder and chief executive Dr. Vicki Belo, managing director Dr. Hayden Kho Jr., Ayala Land Hospitality creative director Paloma Zobel de Ayala, Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines chief operating officer Marga Nograles, Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach-Jauncey and Piolo Pascual during the opening ceremony.

Tthe DOT, through its National Capital Region (NCR) office, recently awarded Belo Medical Group as the first DOT-accredited wellness clinic, cementing its commitment to meeting the standards for promoting medical tourism through high-quality aesthetic and wellness services.

Belo NEXA also received its certificate of registration from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) during the event, becoming the first medical aesthetic clinic registered under the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises Law or the CREATE Law, as a tourism enterprise.

Frasco said that the certification reflects “Belo’s leadership in the medical tourism and aesthetics industry”.

Belo NEXA is the biggest clinic of Belo Medical Group to date, which provides a comprehensive range of both surgical and non-surgical services.

PHL tourism takes home 13 honors at World Travel Awards Asia edition

THE Department of Tourism’s (DOT) controversial “Love the Philippines” (LVP) campaign was recognized Asia’s Leading Marketing Campaign at the World Travel Awards (WTA) for Asia & Oceania 2024.

The agency edged out Air India’s Window of Possibilities, AirAsia’s Let’s Fly and Go, the Singapore Tourism Board’s Made in Singapore, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) Meaningful Relationship. TAT was last year’s winner in the category, which the DOT did not join, having just launched LVP. The Hong Kong Tourism Board was recognized as Asia’s Leading Tourist Board’ a category also joined by the DOT and 11 other tourism boards in the region.

The Philippines won 13 awards of the 27 categories it joined, which included  Asia’s Leading Island Destination, Asia’s Leading Luxury Island Destination (Boracay), and Asia’s Leading Wedding Destination (Cebu). The country was also hailed as Asia’s Leading Beach Destination for the seventh year and Asia’s Leading Dive Destination for the sixth consecutive year, while Intramuros is Asia’s leading Tourist Attraction for the fourth time.

The awarding ceremony was held for the first time in Manila, and made in partnership with the DOT and its marketing arm, the Tourism Promotions Board, and City of Dreams Manila. The latter was awarded Asia’s Leading Casino Resort.

The LVP campaign launched in June 2023, replaced the highly successful and multiawarded “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” campaign. Conceptualized by advertising agency DDB Philippines Inc., the launch of the LVP was rocky after a mood video publicly used and posted on the DOT’s social media pages, was found to have included foreign scenes.  (See “Stakeholders, TPB shut out of new tourism drive decision,” in the BusinessMirror, July 3, 2023.)

In her opening remarks at the WTA event, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco credited President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. with leading the way in “embarking on a path of dynamic tourism development, investing heavily in infrastructure, improving connectivity across our beautiful archipelago, enhancing the overall tourism experience, and most importantly, investing in our greatest asset our people.”

Several hotels and resorts,  along with travel agencies and tour operators—known as the real workhorses of the Philippine tourism industry—also racked up numerous accolades in the Asian and Philippines’ categories.

Vivere Azure in Batangas City won Asia’s Leading Beach Destination; Discovery Primea in Makati, Asia’s Leading Business Hotel; Admiral Hotel Manila-MG Gallery, Asia’s Leading Design Hotel; Atmosphere Resorts in Negros Oriental, Asia’s Leading Dive Resort; Amanpulo in Palawan, Asia’s Leading Private Resort; Ascott Makati, Asia’s Leading Serviced Apartments; and El Nido Resorts-Apulit Island in Palawan, Asia’s Leading Sustainable Resort.

Meanwhile, Megaworld Hotels & Resorts (MHR) was acknowledged as the Philippines’ Leading Hotel Group, marking a significant milestone for the rapidly growing homegrown hotel chain. It boasts a portfolio of 13 hotels across seven brands, with more than 8,500 room keys, making it the nation’s largest hotel operator.

In a news statement, MHR Managing Director Cleofe Albiso said, “We share this award with the 3,000 hoteliers across [our] properties who found a home, a sense of belongingness, and a pride in serving as a Filipino brand. This award will further strengthen our brands as we continue to contribute as an industry to the economy and enable MHR to give back to its stakeholders. Our hotels are more than just structures, they are homes where guests experience genuine Filipino hospitality.”

MHR’s Savoy Hotel Manila also won its fourth consecutive award as the Philippines’Leading Airport Hotel. Discovery Shores, Boracay was awarded the country’s Leading Beach Resort; Anya Resort Tagaytay, Leading Boutique Resort; bai Hotel Cebu, Leading Business Hotel; Seda Hotels, Leading Business Hotel Group; and Conrad Manila, Leading Conference Hotel.

Other winners in the Philippines’ categories include: Swissôtel Clark (Leading Lifestyle Hotel), Ascott the Residence (Leading Serviced Apartment Brand), Ascott Bonifacio Global City (Leading Serviced Apartments), and a host of tourism stakeholders.
