This hidden waterfall is located in Lanao del Norte on the outskirts of Iligan City, and the allure of this northern Mindanao tourist spot lies in its partial obscurity. Sapang Blue is not as well known as other natural attractions in the area, which lends to its road-less-traveled appeal that attracts adventurous visitors and outdoorsy tourists.

To reach it, you’ll have to navigate your way through a tropical forest and some steep trails along the way, but once you get there, there is a lovely waterfall flowing down into a 12-foot deep river. It is a pastoral setting surrounded by lush greenery and the sound of water cascading into a shallow basin. The shallow basin is perfect for a quick dip in the water

This hidden waterfall is located in Lanao del Norte on the outskirts Found in Barangay Dalipuga, Iligan city, this natural attraction is the most accessible from the city at just 13KM away from the town proper. It features two waterfalls that intersect in the middle before its descent into a shallow basin beneath it. The water in the natural pool is crystal clear and refreshing, the perfect place to cool down after the 20-minute hike it takes to reach the waterfalls from the nearest jump-off point.

Before reaching the main attraction, a mini version of the falls can be found, locally known as the “Little Pampam”. There is also a cave that you can explore located nearby, a great area to enjoy nature and the forest surrounding it.

This popular local park is in Barangay Dalipuga, and has an area covering about half a kilometer from end to end. At the northern tip is a concrete wharf facing the sea, known to be a great spot to watch the sunset before nightfall. There is also a statue of the national hero Jose Rizal standing on the lawn, gazing at the lush leaves of the surrounding greenery.

It has a rocky beach lined with ‘talisay’ trees, a type of leafy tree that serves as a shelter from the harsh rays of the midday sun. The coastline is littered with corals and sharp stones, with rough waves enveloping the shore every once in a while, so swimming is generally not recommended.

Kalubihon Falls is part of a series of waterfalls sharing the same streamline as that of Pampam Falls. Located in Barangay Dalipuga, reaching it requires agility and endurance. Wear proper hiking shoes and be prepared to not just get wet from the waterfalls but to sweat from the effort of going on an uphill climb to reach this natural attraction.

After walking through large boulders and some slippery rocks, you’ll proceed into the mouth of a cave and wade through the 10-meter length while submerged underwater. At the end is the secret waterfall. The 30-minute trek through the forest is well worth the effort as soon as you reach your final destination: a 20-foot high waterfall hidden inside a shallow catch basin of refreshing clear water, surrounded by a wall of smooth rocks and foliage.

11. NPC Nature's Park

This eco-tourism park can be found inside the Hydroelectric Power Plant Complex of the National Power Corporation and provides a complimentary shuttle service to allow guests to explore the facility. It highlights the importance of how the Maria Cristina Falls has helped generate hydroelectric power to benefit the community and features various tourist attractions throughout the sprawling property.

Some of the attractions include a mini zoo, bat cave, butterfly garden, crocodile farm, koi pond, and a place for the ostrich to roam the grounds. Photography enthusiasts will enjoy the viewing deck along the Agos River, and adrenaline seekers could try the rock climbing facilities nearby. A cafeteria and souvenir shop are also available inside the park.

Dodiongan Falls in Iligan City

Towering 20 meters high in Barangay Bonbonon, this twin drop waterfall is located 14KM away from Iligan City. The water streaming downward falls against a smooth limestone formation that resembles two folded wings similar to angel wings. Classified as a chute waterfall, Dodiongan Falls cuts a striking image against the moss-covered limestones jutting out of the forest clearing, with the turquoise-colored water basin catching the water down below.

To reach the waterfalls, you’ll need to wade through several river crossings and streams that run through its basin. Trekking shoes are highly recommended to avoid accidental slipping, and be prepared to get your feet wet on your way there.

Once you’ve braved the grueling trail, you’ll find a gaping opening where stalactites and stalagmites can are visible. The 8 cluster cave has many chambers of various sizes, some towering overhead, while others feature narrow openings and lovely uneven limestone formations.

8. St. Michael's Cathedral

Aerial view of St. Michael's Cathedral

This Catholic church stands along the busy street corner of Manuel L. Quezon Ave and Obach street, situated right at the center of downtown Iligan City. It’s hard to miss: with this fiery pink building looming over the bustling provincial town proper, St. Michael’s Cathedral’s exterior is a far cry from the usual stone church facades of neighboring townships with deep Catholic roots. This is because unlike other old churches in Iligan, St. Michael’s was built in the 1950s after the original structure was destroyed by a flood in the 1840s.

The current building’s exterior features a graceful steeple on its edifice, a statue of patron saint Senior San Miguel across it, and stained glass windows depicting biblical scenes around the church. Inside, the all-white ceiling, graceful arches, and intricate architecture lend a solemn atmosphere to this major archdiocese in Iligan City.

Aside from Cagayan de Oro whitewater rafting, travelers in Iligan can now also experience this fun water adventure.  Villa Gracia is a resort located in Barangay Digkilaan and is the first resort in Iligan to offer white water rafting services to the public. Just 15KM from the Iligan City town proper, the resort is beside Mandulog River, a body of water known for the 1.7KM esplanade constructed along Barangay Hinaplanon and Barangay Santiago.

This river crossing features a wide area and white water rapids, ideal conditions to enjoy this fun outdoor activity. Thrill-seekers joining the white water rafting adventure will be equipped with safety gear that includes inflatable rafts, helmets, life vests, and paddles, along with guides to assist you throughout the trip.

Philippines sign in Paseo de Santiago

This seaside complex is located near Iligan’s City’s Talipapa or market in Barangay Santiago and features beautiful panoramic ocean views along the Iligan Bay. It is where you will find two iconic signs made of concrete letters that spell “Iligan City” and “Philippines”. Both are reminiscent of the famous Hollywood sign in the United States and are popular tourist spots that attract many visitors to the city.

Aside from the famous signs, this park by the sea also has a live band that plays on the stage every night, along with food stalls, open-air seating, and fresh air. It also has a resort called Casa de Paseo de Santiago that looks like a medieval castle and is a popular venue for weddings, birthdays, and other milestone celebrations.

Situated in Barangay Buru-un, Iligan City, it is easily accessible by public transport, making it the ideal getaway for people living in the town proper. It features an idyllic setting where a spring of clear water flows into a shallow river, with large rocks and smooth boulders forming mini pools and small waterfalls throughout the property.

Surrounded by a lush forest where large tropical trees tower over the horizon, it offers a welcome respite from the bustling city. There are cottages for rent along the periphery and a few karaoke machines.

Mimbalut Falls in Iligan City

This natural attraction is a popular tourist spot where locals gather to relax and enjoy the refreshing body of water in Lawis Spring. Mimbalut Falls is found in Barangay Buru-un, 11KM away from the city proper. Because of its convenient location, it is the most accessible among the 23 waterfalls found throughout Iligan City and is also one of the Iligan tourist spots that possess unique features that continue to attract tourists to this natural attraction.

The waterfall, which is 90 feet tall and 18 feet wide, drops not into a quiet catch basin, but rather crashes into huge boulders and a collection of rocks right beneath it. The water cascades into slippery surfaces further down, creating a stunning downstream view of smaller waterfalls streaming endlessly down the river.

With the lush forest surrounding it and the peaceful sound of the water crashing into rocks, it’s a stunning sight among the northern Mindanao tourist spots.

People floating on raft by the Tinago Falls

This popular waterfall can be found along the 36KM long Agus River in Barangay Ditucalan, and is one of the main attractions in northern Mindanao. The word “tinago” means “hidden”, owing to its concealed location within a deep ravine that can only be reached by descending on a 500-step concrete staircase. Because of this, elderly visitors with heart conditions are advised to proceed with caution.

The 240 ft tall Tinago Falls has an abundant stream of cold water streaming out from Agus River that cascades down into a deep basin of blue water pooling at the bottom. There is a small cave beneath the falls where visitors can enter to experience the gushing water from another vantage point.

This majestic waterfall is the second-highest in the Philippines and boasts an 870-foot drop into the base stream at the bottom. It is located in Barangay Rogongon, about 30KM away from Iligan’s city center, and has a unique two-tiered feature that enhances its pristine beauty.

To reach it, you’ll have to navigate steep trails and narrow pathways in a thickly forested area. You’ll need to be prepared with the proper footwear and a firm resolve to get a closer look. Once you get there, you’ll see the emerald-colored water of the basin, which cascades down into a stream along a basalt cliff with huge boulders, a stunning sight to behold.

Maria Cristina Falls in Iligan City

The iconic Maria Cristina Falls stands on the Agus River. This Iligan landmark is also known as the twin falls because the water flowing downstream has a boulder at the brink, separating the cascading water at that point.

It is a little over 9KM away from the city proper and is known for its impressive height and natural splendor. This 320-foot waterfall inspired a popular legend that claims that the falls represent the tragic story of twin sisters named Maria and Cristina who fell in love with the same man.

Legend aside, this waterfall also serves a practical purpose: it is the primary source of hydroelectric energy in Iligan, powering local industries and businesses in the region.

It’s been a go-to place for both locals and tourists who wanted to have a taste of the creamy shake, said to be made from durian harvested from the owners’ farm, and of course, topped with chunks of fresh durian fruit to make it even more special.

Not to mention, this place also served delicious Rendang, a spicy meat dish cooked in coconut milk, and is available in beef, chicken, and fish variety.

And guess what?! They also have rental videoke rooms in case you wanted to have a good time!

They’re located at Quezon Avenue Extension Corner Seminary Drive, in Pala-o.

Visit the Tinago Falls

Tinago Falls

One of the places you should include in your itinerary is visiting Iligan’s pride – the Tinago Falls . Located at Barangay Purukan, between the town of Linamon and Iligan City, you will be awed with how it looked majestic in real life and how peaceful you’ll feel once you’ve reached this destination.

After walking through the 500-steps winding staircase, you’ll be welcomed with its very 240 feet falls, cold waters, and its calm blue-colored lagoon, making it a picture-worthy tourist attraction.

To go here, take a ride going to Barangay Buru-un. From there, there are habal-habal for hire for only P100, which will take you to the falls. The entrance fee is P10 per person and a maximum of P300 for cottages.

Spend the Afternoon at the Maria Cristina Falls

We’ve probably only read it in textbooks and in blogs, but Maria Cristina Falls is breathtakingly beautiful in real life.

It’s hailed as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Philippines and called the “twin falls” due to a large rock at the waterfall’s brink dividing the water flow. It is situated at the Nature Park at the boundaries of Barangays Maria Cristina, Buru-un, and Dicutalan and generates 70% of Mindanao’s electricity.

Maria Cristina Falls

The 320 feet high waterfall is open on Saturday and Sundays at 11 AM. To go here, take the Buru-un line jeepney from the Iligan City port area to Agus Bridgen, which would only cost you P12. From there, walk the rest of the way for about half an hour. The entrance is P35.

Chill at Mimbalut Falls

Mimbalut Falls in Iligan City photo via FB Page

Another Iligan City tourist spot to check out is the Mimbalut Falls, a part of the Iligan Paradise Resort and Eco Park situated near Brgy Buru-un.

Easy to locate compared to the other 23 must-visit falls in the city. It is surrounded by cottages for a picnic and lunch out! Visitors can either do various outdoor activities from ziplining, horseback riding, and cable car rides.

Enter the Hindang Cave

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try entering the Hindang Cave with a group? But did you know that before arriving at the cave, you need to trek about 2-3 hours uphill, so it’s quite the exercise, eh?

But no worries, while you undergo the tad tiresome trek, you’ll be welcomed with different plants, cascading vines, and light-colored massive limestone, which makes every minute worth it.

The cave is a 6-8 chamber cave complex and is notable for its wide entrance. Its two caves are home to hundreds of fruit bats, so make sure to close your mouth while inside the cave.

Taste their mouthwatering Lechon

Lechon Baboy

You may not know it, but Iligan is also the best place to devour some good ‘ol lechon! Feast or no feast, most of Iliganon swears that their lechon is better than Lechon Cebu. Just make sure to pair it with their signature vinegar called Pinakurat.

Once you get to taste their lechon, you’ll get a hint of tanglad, onion, garlic, and bell pepper.

Buy some Cheding’s Toasted Peanuts

Cheding’s Toasted Peanuts

A staple pasalubong for some, Cheding’s Toasted Peanuts are one of a kind! It even has its own tagline saying, “Nag-iisang pasalubong ng Iligan. ” It has been in the business for almost 50 years now, and tourists usually flock this place located in the city proper.

The packaging comes in different sizes, 1 kilo, ½ kilo, 370 grams, 50 grams, ¼ kilo, and 200 grams foil pack.

Have a bit of the famous Sunburst Chicken

Sunburst Chicken photo via FB Page

Featured by many blogs, wait until you try the Sunburst Chicken and attest to its great-tasting flavor. They’re located at Badelles St. Palao, Iligan City.

Food tip: Try indulging the chicken with banana catsup and cold beer on hand! Definitely, the perfect way to cap off the night. Try the Tuna Steak too!

Visit the Night Market

Here is one of the best things in Iligan’s famous night market – more lechon and street food. If you like trying different food, then this is the best place for you.

Besides the food and drinks, you can also buy some ukay-ukay items, dry goods, a free live musical concert, and interesting activities to amp the night.

Iligan Weekend Night Market photo via FB Page

The Weekend Night Market at the Rizal Freedom Park is open every Friday and Saturday, starting from 5:00 pm. For more updates, you can visit their Facebook page.

Visit the Limunsudan Falls

Limunsudan Falls photo via Sa Kabukiran FB Page

Dubbed as the second highest waterfall in the country, this fall should be included on your Iligan travel bucket list because of its scenic view, and the massive 870-foot two-tier fall is one of a kind in the Philippines. Bur visiting here ain’t easy.

You need to pass through days of the trek from the city proper to Brgy. Rogongon, however, you can also take the habal-habal, which would take 5 hours.

Not to mention, you need to take part in the community’s traditions and before visiting Limunsudan Falls.

Trek at Mt. Agad-Agad

If you’re thirsty for a more thrilling activity, then Mt. Agad-Agad can bring much joy to that. Located at Brgy. Pugaan, the trek would only take about 2-3 hours and has an estimated height of 1600m above sea level. To go here, ride a jeepney from the public market.

It may be a long hike, but nonetheless, the view from up above is certainly worth it.

See the so-called “Angel Wings” of Dodiongan Falls

You would really see the resemblance of an Angel Wings once you get here at Dodiongan falls. Located at Barangay Dingkila-an, this famous twin-waterfall soars about 20meter high and is separated with an oddly shaped rock that separates the flow.

This waterfall is definitely picture-perfect, making it one of the most visited attractions in Iligan..

Take a trip to the Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral House.

If you have more time in the city, you should visit the former president’s Diosdado Macapagal’s located 20-30 minutes away from the city center. It is now declared as a heritage house by the National Historical Institute last August 14, 2002.

Apart from the garden, which is said to be young Gloria Arroyo’s playground, inside are some memorabilia and paintings of the Macapagal family.

Swim at the Pampam Falls

Pampam Falls photo by @ayanamarjerie via Chasing Waterfalls FB Page

One of the things you shouldn’t forget when traveling to Iligan is to bring and wear your most comfortable swimwear – and last, but not the least, places you should visit would be here at the Pampam Falls located at Sitio Kalubihon in Brgy.

Dalipuga. It is one of the easiest treks in the city and is a great place to have a quick dip.

The water basin is also not that deep, so it’s overall safe, especially if you’re traveling soon with your family.

iligan city tourist destinations

This brief guide to Iligan City will let you know how to get there, what to do, eat, and drink, where to stay, and must-see spots.

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

A city with one waterfall is interesting enough already.  What more if it has two… or at least twenty?  It may seem unbelievable but it’s true!  Iligan City is home to about 23 waterfalls thus the moniker City of Majestic Waterfalls .

Some may be doubtful about exploring the city considering that Mindanao is known for clashes between rebels and government forces but Iligan is actually a safe place to go to in Northern Mindanao .  Sure there’s a heavy presence of police and armed forces especially at the city entrance but other than that, it looks like most cities in the country.  So long as you remain within the city and obey the city ordinances and rules, your safety is less likely to be at risk.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Iligan City summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Iligan City in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

SEE & DO

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while in Iligan City.

1 | See the waterfalls

If you can only do one activity in the city, it should be to see all the waterfalls, or at least the most popular ones.  The top on the list to visit is Maria Cristina Falls , one of the most popular not only in Iligan but the whole Philippines.  Apart from being beautiful, this 320 feet high waterfall is also beneficial as it is the primary source of electricity of the city.

Tinago Falls is also a must-visit when in the city.  It has multiple cascades with a natural pool hidden in a lush jungle giving a truly scenic and mesmerizing view.  Another to add to your list is Limunsudan Falls.  The tallest two-tiered waterfall in the country is located in a remote area that requires a 3 to 4 hours ride on dirt roads but you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of this grand waterfall.

Other popular waterfalls to see are Abaga Falls, Dodiongan Falls, and Mimbalot Falls.

2 | Explore Hindang Cave

Waterfalls are not the only natural attractions to see in Iligan.  The city is also home to Hindang Cave, a cave complex with 6 to 8 chambers in which two of the chambers are inhabited by hundreds of fruit bats.  Getting to the cave may require a challenging trek of around 2 to 3 hours but then you will be accompanied by pleasant sights of lush greenery and massive limestones which is rewarding enough already.

3 | Hike Mt. Agad-Agad

Hiking Mt. Agad-Agad is a great activity if you’re in for more challenging adventures.  It is easily accessible since the trail is quite established but it may not be ideal for first-timers with minimum to zero physical activity prior to hiking.  At the peak is a park with huts, chairs and tables, and even a restroom.  One can see a partial view of Iligan City below.

4 | Visit the Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral House

The house, which used to be the residence of former Philippine Presidents Diosdado Macapagal and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Mindanao, features memorabilia and paintings of the Macaraeg-Macapagal family.  The house is recognized as a heritage house by the National Historical Institute.

5 | Walk around Anahaw Open Amphitheater

Located in the city hall premises, Anahaw Amphitheater is probably the biggest open amphitheater in Mindanao.  It is used as a venue for various events, celebrations, and other activities.

6 | Take a refreshing dip at Timoga Springs

If all the waterfalls aren’t enough yet, you may want to take a refreshing dip at Timoga Springs, a group of springs known for the icy-cool and crystal-clear waters flowing towards several swimming pools of varying sizes.  The water, which comes from Lanao Lake, is one of the richest sources of high-pH, alkaline mineral water.

NOTE: The Diyandi Festival occurs annually every 29th of September.

5 | Iliganon Restobar

Iliganon Restobar offers a variety of dining experiences with its cafe area, open bar area, a piano area where you can enjoy a bit of peace, or outdoor seating where live bands occasionally play.  Customers rave about their beef rendang and durian shake so make sure to order them while in the resto.

6 | Lai-lai Yeung Chow

As the name implies, Lai-lai Yeung Chow specializes in Chinese cuisine.  It’s a go-to place for locals craving for Chinese favorites such as pancit canton and lumpiang shanghai.  With generous serving and reasonable prices, the restaurant is worth-trying when in Iligan.

7 | Marianos Home Cooked Specialties

A top restaurant based on reviews, Marianos is a family owned restaurant with a relaxing vibe around.  They serve tastefully-presented dishes made of high quality ingredients.  A go-to place for fancy dining, prices aren’t cheap but with wonderful ambience and good service in addition to high quality foods, Marianos is a place you shouldn’t miss while in the city.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a hostel dorm costs from 400 PHP ($8 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.   AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda , and  Expedia .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The minimum fare starts at P11 ($0.22 USD) for traditional jeepney and P14 ($0.28 USD) for modernized buses.

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  WayAway ,  Kiwi  or  Expedia .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Iligan City.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Iligan City, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Iligan City or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Iligan City Tourist Spots To See in One Day

Iligan City is usually visited as a Day Trip from Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. If you have one day, you can definitely visit some of the famous Iligan City Tourist Spots during your Day Tour !

I’ve never really paid attention when people talk about Iligan City. Especially at work, when we discuss the warehouse when we conduct audits.

Yes, I know that it is the home to the ever famous Maria Cristina Falls . But that is all. It never really piqued my interest.

I’ve also heard countless recounts of visits to Maria Cristina Falls and maybe acknowledge that it was a place I’d like to visit… Well, maybe one day…

That ‘maybe one day’ came true when we visited Cagayan de Oro early this year. It was a short trip but we still managed to visit a couple of provinces around the city.

Our itinerary included visiting some of the Iligan City Tourist Spots .

Disclosure: We use affiliate links on this post. Meaning, if you book any hotel/ resort by clicking on the link, I earn a commission at NO EXTRA COST to you. Thank you for reading the blog!

Table of Contents

Maria Cristina Falls

Tinago falls, mimbalut falls, macaraeg-macapagal ancestral house, chedings’ peanuts, iligan city tour itinerary, maria cristina hotel, go hotels iligan, how to get to iligan city.

Before we cover the spots you need to include in your Iligan City Tour Itinerary, let us discuss the basics in visiting Iligan.

Travelling to Iligan City is easy especially if you are already in Cagayan de Oro City.

Laguindingan Airport is the nearest airport in the city. Flights from Manila, Cebu, Iloilo and Davao are available almost daily.

At the airport, you have two (2) options:

Option 1 is to take a taxi directly to Iligan City. Option 2 is to ride a taxi going to the Laguindingan Terminal (Northern Mindanao). From the terminal, you can get a bus to take you to Iligan. Travel time is about an hour.

If you are in Cebu and Manila, there are boats that can take you to Cagayan de Oro.

Travel time is around 7-8 hours (overnight) from Cebu and around 44 hours if from Manila.

Once in Cagayan de Oro, you can now take a bus going to the city.

In Cagayan de Oro, you can now take a bus from the Bulua Terminal. Travel time is approximately 2 hours.

Please double check the schedule and fare for any of the transport mentioned above as the time and price may vary.

If you ever visit CDO, you can also decide to do a Day Tour to Iligan City. This is how:

Iligan City Tourist Spots

Maria Cristina Falls is definitely one of the must-visit sites when in Iligan City.

If you’re a Filipino, you probably grew up reading about Maria Cristina Falls and how it is an important waterfall in the country.

The falls is about 320 feet tall and is surrounded by lush greenery on all sides. It is an oasis found at the boundaries of Barangays Maria Cristina, Ditucalan, and Buru-un.

Aside from being an Iligan City tourist spot, the falls also play a significant role in Mindanao’s energy supply.

The Maria Cristina Falls is protected by the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR) and is in a Natures Park.

Before including it to your Iligan City Day Tour, make sure that the falls is not under ‘High Alert’. The management temporarily closes it to guests when this happens.

Entrance Fee: 50 Php per head

Another place to see in Iligan City is the Tinago Falls in Robocon, Linamon, Lanao Del Norte.

You need to go down 436 steps to see this beautiful waterfalls. Tinago means ‘hidden’ in English – which makes the name appropriate if not accurate. 😉

The falls is managed by the local government and is formally called the Tinago Falls Park and Resort. Personally, I was impressed by the presence of various CCTV camera in the area for safety and security reasons.

You can easily spend a day or maybe hours here if you want to. Cliff diving, waterfall massage and of course some nice and cool swimming are a few of the things that you can do here.

Entrance Fee: 30 Php

Mimbalut Falls is part of the Iligan Paradise Resort and Eco Park and is located near Brgy Buru-un. It is located just along the road, making it easy for people to spot.

The area surrounding the falls is commercialised with cottages, chairs and tables, a structure and even a pool.

When we arrived, not many people were inside the resort. But you will see locals washing clothes near the base of the falls.

Taking a bath here can be pretty tricky as there are big stones at the bottom. Though the management has seen to it that there are concrete basins that act as a pool of natural water in some areas.

We did not swim here though because we have already dried up and have already changed into dry clothes in Tinago Falls.

Nevertheless, you can also take a dip here if you want. 😉

If you are to spend a day here, please be informed that they do have corkage fees for drinks bought outside.

We saw some tourists (led by their guide) who went around the resort to get near the waterfalls.

If you want to avoid paying the fees to get near the falls for some photo session you can also do this. Though the view wouldn’t be as good as the view we had inside.

Entrance Fee: 50 Php (adult); 40 Php (kids and senior citizens)

The Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral House is a historical spot in Iligan City. It is the ancestral home of the late President Diosdado Macapagal.

This is also where the second Lady President of the Philippines Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (GMA) grew up. Because of this, the house is considered to be the first house in the Philippines where two President’s lived.

The house is now a part of the National Historical Institute. It is being preserved as a tourist spot for people passing through Iligan City.

The house is home to several antiques and memorabilia of the Macaraeg-Macapagal family. There are several photos of GMA during her youth and her early years as a wife too.

We were taken to a complete tour around the house and given some information on when the family still lived here. The house is pretty simple and reflects the mid-range lifestyle of a politically powerful family.

Entrance Fee: None but donations are welcome.

A visit to this 40 plus year old and only ‘Pasalubong Center’ in Iligan is also a must during your visit to the city.

We visited the peanut house on our way back to CDO. It was a quick stop for us and a chance to stretch our legs too. The traffic was heavy by the time we arrived at the centre.

Entrance Fee: None

For a quick view of our itinerary, below is a sample of our Iligan City Day Tour plus costs:

Our friend from  LUDIFY Trips arranged everything for us including the itinerary and van rental. We had six other travellers who were there with us. This helped lessen the expenses, especially for the van rental.

Yet another incredible place to visit in The Philippines!! We are planning on returning next year so we’re on the look out for new places to go. We love waterfalls and nature so this would be an ideal place for us and it makes a change from beaches!!

Thanks for sharing this guide- super helpful for those who are on a time crunch!

I can completely understand why the falls are such a draw, they are spectacular! My husband would be all over Cheding’s peanuts and my daughters would love to try swimming and cliff diving! A great place for everyone.

Tinago Fall is amazing and very appropriately named because it does seem as they are very hidden. 436 steps to go down sounds great until you have to come back up! LOL! Absolutely beautiful!

Absolutely love the falls! How beautiful are these photos. I would love to visit the Philippines one day, and certainly spend a few days in Iligan city! Thanks for sharing these fun sites!

You are welcome, Yara!

lligan city sounds like it is worth a visit simply for the falls — Maria Cristina Falls Tinago Falls and Mimbalut Falls. I am a sucker for waterfalls anywhere. I’m checking out your other story n Maria Cristina Falls as well.

Aww.. Thanks Michael!

I never knew about Iligan City but would love to visit now after reading your post. Mimbalut Falls looks beautiful Thanks for sharing great details about how to reach by road, rail, and boat.

It’s so beautiful! The Maria Cristina Falls are absolutely stunning but I’d also love to see the Tinago Falls. Swimming underneath looks so relaxing.

Sorry to hear it didn’t spark up your interest. Your article got me interested though. I love seeing waterfalls during our trips. And it must be nice to stay at one of those tables with your feet in the water on a hot day.

At first. 😉 But it was definitely interesting when we arrived.. 🙂

Great post! I’m really happy to see that you’re shedding light on a place that is rarely written about in travel writing! I’m a LOVER of waterfalls and this place seems to have an abundance of them. Maria Cristina Falls is not an attraction I’ve ever heard of, but is now definitely on my Bucket List! I always get very overwhelmed trying to find the “right” hotel as well when traveling to new places, so thanks a bunch for including some good ones and taking the stress out of that!

Thank you Stephanie!

This blog is really helpful! We’ll be in Iligan this March and reading your blog just helped us finish our itinerary for the trip. Thanks a lot! 🙂

Great to be of help, Chaste! Enjoy your trip. 🙂

ILIGAN CITY TRAVEL GUIDE | Itinerary + Map

Iligan City Itinerary and Travel Guide

Iligan City is known as the City of Majestic Waterfalls. It’s not a claim based on air. This city south of the Philippines boasts a total of 23 waterfalls in its vicinity, making it one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Mindanao, both for backpackers and tourists alike. Located in the province of Lanao del Norte, it is the industrial center of the south. Its name is derived from the Higaonon word Ilijan. The name of the city originally means fortress of defense, being the site of frequent pirate and Muslim attacks during bygone eras. The area was initially settled by sea dwellers before being invaded by Visayan migrants from the island of Panglao in the 16th century, making Iligan one of the earliest Christian settlements in Mindanao.

UNDERSTAND ILIGAN CITY

Iligan City is located in the province of Lanao Del Sur in Region 10 Northern Mindanao. Politically, it has already separated and is administered independently from the province since 2009. With forty four barangays, it is classified as a highly urbanized city— one of the thirty three such cities in the Philippines. For touring around the city, Barangay Poblacion—its center—is the recommended base of operation. From the flat coastal west, Iligan transforms into hills and mountains—where the waterfalls and cold springs are located—as you go eastward. Iligan has a tropical weather with rains evenly distributed throughout the year.

HOW TO GET TO ILIGAN CITY

ILIGAN VIA OZAMIZ CITY Cebu Pacific and Philippines Airlines has daily flights from Manila and Cebu to Ozamiz (1hour 20mins). From Ozamiz, one can board a two-hour ferry from Cokialong Shipping Lines (₱200.00) that would directly dock in Iligan City. ILIGAN VIA CEBU CITY There are numerous flights to Cebu from around the Philippines and all over the world daily. WHERE TO EAT IN ILIGAN CITY

Besides the usual Jollibees and McDonalds, there are numerous restaurants where tourists can try local dishes and specialties. Don’t forget to try the numerous durian stalls along the road too.

WHAT TO SEE & DO IN ILIGAN CITY

Iligan City is home to, arguably, the country’s most famous waterfall, the Maria Cristina Falls. But besides this giant of a waterfall, it is also home to twenty two other falls that are also not to be missed. The city isn’t dubbed as the City of Majestic Waterfalls for nothing. The city also has a couple of other attractions that tourists and backpackers would find interesting, like its church, the country’s former presidents’ ancestral house, museums, parks, and cold springs. With more time, one can also explore the nearby coastal town of Linamon, if one is inclined to go beaching. For the braver souls, the Islamic City of Marawi is also just an hour ride away via fixed route vans.

FESTIVALS IN ILIGAN CITY

But it would be ideal if one could stay for at least five days to spread one’s waterfalling adventures much more thinly. CAN I HAVE YOUR COMPLETE ITINERARY ?

Hi, it's posted above :)

Very helpful and informative blogs. Thanks to you.

Thank you! Enjoy your trip to Iligan City!

I am a solobackpacker from Manila and I just arrived after exploring Misamis Oriental. I had best experiences at Camiguin and Cagayan de Oro but not in Iligan. Iligan sure has a number of natural resources to boot but seafoods and products are overpriced and people I met made me wonder if I am still in the "old" Manila. The Habal driver I talked with was charging me P1,000 for a 5 hour tour compared to Camiguin's P800 whole day, multiple destination tour. The tour guide assigned to me at Tinago Falls was charging me P300.00 for having taken pictures of me for a 30 minute tour. The boat riders were also asking for money and before I was hurriedly leaving the site, the personnel assigned to manage the Habal Drivers at Tinago Falls was charging me for sourcing my driver at the terminal. Could the local government look at this please? If you are serious about tourists coming in the city, then the people should be educated to look at opportunities in the long than the short term. Tourists avoid places where they feel they are being held up.

A DIY Travel Guide to Maria Christina Falls, Iligan City: Everything You Need to Know

ma christina falls travel guide

The Maria Christina Falls is a stunning waterfall located in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte. Known for its natural beauty and impressive size, it is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers. Not to mention the fact that Iligan City is known as the City of Majestic Falls as it is surrounded by 23 majestic waterfalls. Thus, visiting Iligan City should be part of your bucket list and one of the places to visit in Mindanao.

If you are going backpacking around the Northern Mindanao region, Iligan City must be part of your trip. As mentioned above, you can visit a lot of majestic waterfalls around the city such as Maria Christina Falls (which is the most famous one), Tinago Falls, Mimbalot Falls, etc. With that, here’s a DIY travel guide to help you make the most of your trip to Maria Christina Falls. This travel guide to Maria Christina Falls also includes other places to see in Iligan City.

Table of Contents

How to get to Maria Christina Falls, Iligan City?

diy travel guide to maria christina falls iligan

  • From Manila, take a flight to Cagayan De Oro City. The entry point should be at the Laguindingan Airport, which is approximately 75 kilometers away from Iligan City.
  • From the airport, take a van to head to the Tambo terminal. Travel time from Laguindingan Airport to the terminal is approximately 2 hours.
  • Then from the terminal, take a tricycle to the jeep terminal for Buru-un. Then, ride the jeep going to Buru-un and inform the driver to drop you off at Maria Cristina Falls.

On the other hand, in our case, my friend and I hired a habal habal driver so from the bus/van terminal, we met him and then he took us to Maria Christina Falls.

Essential Travel Tips and Reminders

  • I would highly recommend hiring a habal habal beforehand to avoid being a hassle during your trip to Iligan City.
  • Make sure to have enough cash before going around the city.
  • Be mindful of the time while traveling around the city especially if you are going for a day tour. Buses going back to the city might be limited late at night. Better to book a room within the city, or try to leave the city around 6 PM for your safety purposes as well.
  • Please take note that as of this writing (June 2023), tourists are not allowed yet to visit the Maria Christina Falls since the roads going there are not yet fully developed and it is still dangerous to get there due to unexpected landslides.
  • To get updated on the status of Maria Christina Falls, you may visit NAPOCOR official website before you consider visiting the falls.

To be frank, in our case, we visited the waterfall around November 2022 , and I got a direct contact so we were allowed to enter the inside the premises. Though we could only stay for a short period of time.

Estimated Budget and Expenses

  • Van from the airport to Iligan City: Php 250
  • Habal habal to Maria Christina Falls & Tinago Falls: Php 700
  • Bus from Iligan City to Cagayan De Oro: Php 280

Best Time to Visit the Maria Christina Falls

The best time to visit Maria Christina Falls in Iligan City is during the rainy season (June to December) when the water flow is at its peak. However, the waterfall can be visited all year round, even during the dry season. The waterfall is always captivating to see in any season! (I wanted to cry while writing this. Hahaha!)

Entry Fees and Permits

There is an entrance fee to access the  Maria Christina Falls but the fee is typically minimal and subject to change, so it’s advisable to check the current rates before your visit.

However, as mentioned above, the Maria Christina Falls is still closed (as of this writing) until further notice.

Other Places to Visit in Iligan City

Tinago falls.

a famous waterfall in iligan city

One of the most popular waterfalls and tourist attractions to visit in Iligan City, Tinago Falls is another enchanting waterfall worth visiting. It is known for its crystal-clear water and a hidden cave behind the waterfall.

I heard from our tour guide that Tinago Falls is also popular with local celebrities in the Philippines.

Mimbalot Falls

Situated in a scenic rainforest, Mimbalot Falls offers a serene atmosphere and beautiful cascades.

Timoga Springs

Timoga Springs is a natural spring resort located just outside the city. The resort features several pools filled with cool spring water, surrounded by lush vegetation and picnic areas.

Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral House

Immerse yourself in discovering more about the history of the Philippines. This ancestral house showcases traditional Filipino architecture and offers insights into the city’s history.

However, if you’re traveling within the day, you can just hire a habal-habal driver and try to coordinate with him. For a day tour, it is usually highly recommended to get a package tour where you get to visit the three most popular waterfalls in Iligan City, Ma. Christina Falls (if possible), Tinago Falls, and Mimbalot Falls. In our case, we only spent a half day in Iligan City because we also planned on visiting Marawi City which is located in Lanao del Sur.

My Thoughts on Visiting Maria Christina Falls

chasing waterfalls in iligan city mindanao

Maria Christina Falls is one of the most iconic places that we learn about in elementary school. Ever since I learned about this place, same to the Mayon Volcano in Bicol Region , I told myself that one day, I would want to visit this place. So when I planned our Northern Mindanao trip, I tried my best to really make my childhood dream come true.

My friend and I were so fortunate to have been given a chance to have a glimpse of this majestic waterfall in Iligan City. Learning about the Maria Christina Falls from history textbooks in elementary school was definitely one of my favorite core memories! The inner elementary kid in me must be so happy and fulfilled! Ahhhh! It’s been a dream to get here! (Thank you, Lord!)

For those who are planning to visit Iligan City, don’t lose hope! Maria Christina Falls will soon be open to the public once the roads are finally cleared!

It is located along the borders of Barangay Maria Cristina, Dituculan and Buruan about 9.3 kilometers away from the city.  The name "Maria Cristina" is derived from a legend that tells the death of two sisters named Maria and Cristina that took place at the falls.

  • Tinago Falls

It is one of the famous attractions of the province where it can be reach through trekking down a 300-500-step staircase located in the upper part of Brgy. Buru-un. The city has a lot to offer for adventurers who wish to experience a challenging trek. The 1600-foot-high Mount Agad-Agad is the highest peak in Iligan and is safe for mountain climbing, camping and trekking. It has a hanging bridge which connects the main road and the jump-off point to the foot of this mountain.
