History of Dandeli, Karnataka

Dandeli has a rich history of attracting settlers, with people from various states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Jammu, and Kashmir finding employment and making Dandeli their home. This diverse mix of people has earned Dandeli the nickname “Mini India.”

In this Mini India, you’ll encounter friendly, helpful, loyal, and trustworthy individuals who are more than willing to assist you during your visit. If you’re someone who loves to travel, create memories, explore jungles, witness wildlife, and experience the serenity of early mornings in nature, then Dandeli is the perfect destination for your next vacation.

The Love Story Behind Dandeli’s Name

The history of Dandeli is a captivating tale, much like classic love stories such as Romeo and Juliet or Heer and Ranjha. This town owes its name to an intriguing love story involving a man named Dandelappa.

Dandelappa, a loyal and humble servant of the Mirashi landlords, found himself in a unique love story. He fell in love with the lady of the Mirashi family, and she reciprocated his feelings by proposing marriage. However, due to his unwavering loyalty to the landlords, Dandelappa declined the proposal.

In an unfortunate turn of events, the lady falsely accused Dandelappa of inappropriate behavior to her brothers. Believing her, they tragically killed Dandelappa, separating his head and body. The present-day existence of two temples dedicated to him marks the locations where his head and body were laid to rest.

And so, the town was named ‘Dandeli,’ forever memorializing the tragic love story of Dandelappa.

How Dandeli Started to Develop:

Dandeli, a town with a current population of over 71,000 people, is a harmonious place where individuals of various religions like Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jains, and Sikhs live together peacefully and happily. However, in the 1930s, the scenario was quite different. At that time, Dandeli’s population was only 515, and most of its residents were employed in the forestry department and government sawmill.

During this period, the inhabitants comprised diverse communities such as Konkanis, Devali, Marathas, Kuruba, Lambani, Africans, and Muslims. The settlement was situated on the banks of the Kali river and transformed into an industrial town with the establishment of several companies.

The Indian Plywood Manufacturing Company, which is now closed, was one of the early enterprises. Subsequently, the Lalbhai Ferro-manganese Factory and the renowned West Coast Paper Mill, initiated by the Indian businessman S.K. Bangur Group in 1955, contributed to the town’s industrial development.

Other notable establishments included the Indian Saw Mill and various small industries. The Karnataka Power Corporation also played a significant role in constructing power-generating dams along the Kali river. This period marked the development of Old-Dandeli.\

West Coast PaperMill, Dandeli – Contribution to develop this place:

The recognition of Dandeli by people across India can be attributed to the presence of the West Coast Paper Mill. As news of employment opportunities spread, individuals from various places began migrating to Dandeli. Over the years, Dandeli earned the reputation of being the primary employment hub, especially due to the West Coast Paper Mill. With time, the mill expanded, eventually becoming the largest paper mill in Karnataka.

As more people settled in Dandeli, a ripple effect occurred. Some individuals, inspired by the town’s growth, ventured into starting their own businesses. This gradual development process has led to Dandeli emerging as the adventure capital of South India. The town’s journey from being recognized for the West Coast Paper Mill to becoming a thriving hub of employment and entrepreneurship showcases its remarkable transformation over the years.

Perfect Dandeli Itinerary for 2 Days

Dandeli itinerary:  There are many spots clustered tight together to visit in Dandeli. 2 days is sufficient for a sweet vacation in Dandeli. Or at least to visit all the must-see places.

With most places to experience by the Kali river Dandeli, it’s best to stay in one resort and enjoy all the activities nearby. Visiting Dandeli with my friends was one of my best short trips of 2 days.

Thus, I daresay two days is enough for visiting Dandeli. However, it’s great to stay longer to stay away from the hustle-and-bustle of the world. After all, Dandeli is very  peaceful.

Before we get into the trip, let’s get into the most important part of travel – packing your bags!  Here’s how to plan out your Dandeli itinerary .

Table of Contents

Dandeli itinerary: What to Pack

For two days, here are some items you’ll need:

  • 2-3 sets of clothes – I recommend light summer clothes. Heavy wet clothes (like jackets) are difficult to return with.
  • Plastic bags  – for those wet clothes.
  • First-aid kit/Bandaids  – these come in handy for treks.
  • Flip-flops/espadrilles/sandals – or something you can take on and off quickly.
  • Sun-screen lotion

A backpack with these items is a minimum requirement.

Dandeli Itinerary for 2 Days

Since I live 50 kilometers away from Dandeli, it isn’t troublesome to travel. However, most tourists come from Bangalore and Goa. So book your stay much earlier. Dandeli is a popular tourist spot – it’s difficult to get a homestay on spot.

I’ve visited Dandeli once and I get why it happens; Dandeli is the perfect getaway (and budget-friendly) spot for most under the serene dense forests.

Those who carry valuable items on travel, also consider purchasing travel insurance as it helps cover expenses when you’re visiting a dangerous or theft-prone spot.

Dandeli is safe, but you’ll be around the Kali river a lot and you’re sure to get soaked while rafting. Make sure to keep extra pair of clothing.

1. Check-in Resort in Dandeli

Arrive early in the morning and check in at your resort, homestay, or wherever you’re residing at. It’s best to check in before you visit any place. Leave your bags behind and carry a smaller pack.

Rafting or any of the other activities, be sure to carry a change of clothes while stepping out. Sunscreen lotion also comes in handy – it’s optional.

Dandeli is a jungle-ish area alright. But a pair of flips-flops would do better than shoes. With water activities, you’ll be taking off your footwear often. And you’ll mostly be out here for water activities, so the sandals or flip-flops (even better) are suggestible.

Dandeli travel blog

Transport:  Plan out your transport firsthand or request your accommodation for transportation facilities. For your own transport arrangements, a four-wheeler is recommended. Most dandeli trips are available as package trips more or less the same as its only 2 days. The reliable part of package trip is the transport itself.

The last time I visited Dandeli from Bangalore via a package, transport wasn’t a problem throughout.

It gets difficult if your bike breaks down, and services are not available for kilometers. The best option (and the one we chose) is to hire a chauffeured car. The drivers in Dandeli know their roads and help out better in case of emergencies.

2. Start with Water Activities

Dandeli itinerary . After unpacking at your stay, go straight for water activities (this doesn’t include rafting). This differs in situations. Sometimes, your resort can suggest you start with rafting right away. You can go with that and then come back to water activities later.

I’ll elaborate on why rafting timings change later. Anyway, here are the other water activities:

  • Jacuzzi bath
  • Coracle ride
  • River crossing

kayaking, dandeli itinerary

Kayaking was the first one we went for. Brace up your arms as you’ll need a lot of strength to push (kayak) yourself through the water. Zorbing seemed fun too, except we were already tired with kayaking, so we hit the jacuzzi bath . A reminder: It’s best to apply sun-lotion before you go in at noon.

The sun made sure we burnt down to medium brown when we came back.

coracle

All these activities come together in the same place. It shouldn’t be a long drive from your resort. In fact, some great riverside resorts like the Whistling Woods are right next to the river.

We paid for all the water activities beforehand, so we just had to wait for our turns. Speaking of waiting, whichever opportunity you get first in these activities, go for it!

We decided to go kayaking first and we had to wait for 20 minutes! Anyway, all these fun wet activities will end by half of the day.

You’ll be exhausted (and contented) by then too :)

Check out my other Dandeli Itinerary on Travelista Club !

3. Visit Dandeli Backwaters and Tribal Shop

We visited the backwaters on our way back to the resort from the river. Either way, it’s a lovely spot. When we visited it, we couldn’t drive through it. So we decided to walk through the path while the car drove around the backwater walls.

dandeli travel blog

There isn’t much to see here, but with the huge stones on either side of the road, you can great pictures.

Towards the end of the backwaters road, you’ll find a Tribal shop with local products made in Dandeli. Check that out for souvenirs as well. Later, we got back into the car which was already waiting for us.

Another post for you to check out:  Shirley Falls Guide

4. Campfire and Dinner

Enquire about your bookings prior to your travel. We had our dinner and breakfast for the following morning included in our package. Additionally, we had hired the car only for one day (to take us to the river, backwaters, and back to the stay).

What they provide for dinner differs from one homestay to another. To pick your perfect homestay, here are my favorite budget homestays in Dandeli to pick from. By the time we settled down to eat, we were too hungry to mind the food. But we had an amazing time.

Then we had a campfire. This is the activity you’ll see on most websites offering Dandeli adventure services. But it isn’t. At least it wasn’t for us. The campfire was already set before we arrived and we sat around it and talked. That was it!

good places to visit in dandeli

5. Gear up For Rafting

As mentioned earlier, go rafting as early as possible – before you head to Dandeli, ask your resort or guide about its availability.

Rafting is possible when there is a strong current . Sometimes, it isn’t available. Dandeli is known for rafting so don’t miss it out. Make sure to ask your booked resort/homestay if rafting is available about a week before your visit.

Furthermore, there are two options for rafting. One is short-range rafting and the other is long. The time you spend here differs. The short-range rafting (usually 1 kilometer) doesn’t last long while the long 9-kilometer range can fill in your whole day.

You’ll need another change of clothes here.

6. Trekking and Cycling

Trekking and cycling are optional here. They aren’t the specialties to experience in Dandeli. But more into bicycles myself, I’m looking forward to cycling there soon!

For trekking, there are some popular spots to check out like the Syntheri Rocks and Sykes point. For a family trip, however, camping is a better option :)

Accommodations in Dandeli

Dandeli Itinerary: There are many stays to choose from here. Some lush village resorts are great for family trips and others are perfect for solo travelers and people seeking budget accommodations.

I visited Dandeli with a group of friends a few years ago, after our 12th graduation. And now we’re on our different streams, all physically distant from one another. Dandeli is our number one go-to spot to catch up on old times.

Anyway, we stayed at the Dandeli Jungle Camp where it cost less than 3k including all activities. It was a budget stay cozy for our needs. There are many similar stays as such:

More things to do in Dandeli for Travelers

This is something I dream of doing one day in Dandeli. Did you know that the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Karnataka’s largest sanctuaries?

So it’s a dream to step in and photograph the wildlife species and of course, the vast scenic falls, hills, rivers, and forests. This isn’t part of the 2 day Dandeli itinerary. This is only a suggestion for travel enthusiasts.

One great way to check out this sanctuary is by booking a Dandeli jungle safari ride where they take you deep into the thick forests. You can expect to catch glimpses of a tiger or a black panther!

white water rafting dandeli experience

Dandeli Itinerary: Conclusion

That would sum up your Dandeli itinerary. So two days and one night’s stay is perfect for a vacation in Dandeli. You’ll miss out on either the water activities or the rafting for anything less.

That being said, it brings us to the end of this Dandeli itinerary .

Life Stories by Veena Patil

‘Exchange a coin and you make no difference but exchange a thought and you can change the world.’ Hi! I’m Veena Patil... Fortunate enough to have answered my calling some 35 years ago and content enough to be in this business of delivering happiness almost all my life. Tourism indeed moulds you into a minimalist... Memories are probably our only possession. And memories are all about sharing experiences, ideas and thoughts. Life is simple, but it becomes easy when we share. Places and people are two things that interest me the most. While places have taken care of themselves, here’s my podcast, which I consider to be a great platform, through which I can share some interesting stories I live and love on a daily basis with all you wonderful people out there. I hope you enjoy the journey... Let’s go, celebrate life!

The Top 10 National Bike Road Trips to Explore

A s an avid biker who lives for the open road, I've had the privilege of traversing some of the most stunning routes across India. And let me tell you - this country has landscapes that will take your breath away! From rugged mountain passes blanketed in snow to sun-kissed coastal drives, India offers a biker's paradise.

Over the years, I've explored famous circuits like -

  • Manali to Leh stretch
  • Chamba to Sach Pass and many more.

I've battled challenging terrain, pitched tents under starry skies, and discovered quaint towns lost in time.

Now, I want to share my top 10 favorite national bike road trips that should be on every rider's bucket list.

These routes promise gorgeous vistas, adrenaline-pumping adventures, interactions with friendly locals, delectable food discoveries, and so much more!

I've covered

  • Best time to visit
  • Road conditions, duration
  • What to see and do on the way

All the insider tips to ensure your ride is smooth, safe and filled with memories for a lifetime.

So, let's start the engines and ride into the heart of incredible India!

1. Manali – Leh – Srinagar Motorcycle Tour

  • Best Touring Season : June to September
  • Estimated Duration: 12-14 Days
  • Route : Manali- Keylong – Sarchu – Leh – Pangong Lake- Nubra valley – Leh – Kargil - Srinagar
  • Scenic Beauty : Navigate Nature's grandeur, featuring towering mountains, serene lakes, and captivating valleys.

I recently embarked on the ultimate adventure - the Manali – Leh – Srinagar Motorcycle Tour. As a long-time motorcycle enthusiast, it was a dream journey for me through the majestic landscapes of Ladakh. Nestled in the Northern part of India, Ladakh is a true haven for bikers, surrounded by awe-inspiring Trans Himalayan mountain ranges.

I prepared myself for an adventure of a lifetime as I navigated through high-altitude mountain passes that took my breath away. I traversed broken bridges that got my adrenaline pumping. And I conquered off-road challenges that tested my grit and determination, but filled me with immense satisfaction.

Roughly 50% of the roads were smooth tarmac, while the rest offered thrilling off-road experiences. This was not just a bike trip for me - it was a test of will and courage amidst Ladakh's unparalleled beauty. The vistas of mountain peaks and valleys are forever etched in my memory.

  • Estimated Duration : 7-10 Days
  • Route : Manali – Kaza – Tabo – Nako – Sangla – Chitkul – Sarahan – Shimla (and optionally, Delhi or Chandigarh)
  • Scenic Beauty : Explore the rugged beauty of Spiti Valley, surrounded by towering mountains, ancient monasteries, and enchanting landscapes.

Riding through Spiti Valley on my motorcycle was an epic adventure I'll never forget. I kicked off my tour from Shimla and rode onto Manali, where the real thrill began. The route takes you through some incredible destinations - remote villages like Kaza and Tabo, the serene Nako lake, trekker havens like Sangla and Chitkul, and the quaint little town of Sarahan.

I'd say about 70% of the route from Manali to Kaza was actually rideable for me. There were definitely some tough stretches too along that picturesque but bone-rattling mountainous terrain.

The whole tour took me around 7 days but I was taking plenty of breaks for the gorgeous views and to meet the friendly locals. An experienced biker could do it in maybe 10 days.

3. Chamba – Sach Pass – Pangi Valley motorcycle tour

  • Estimated Duration : 10-12 Days
  • Route : Dharamshala – Doda – Kishtwar – Killar – Sach Pass – Chamba – Manali (and then optionally to Chandigarh or New Delhi)
  • Scenic Beauty : Experience the rugged beauty of Pangi Valley, encountering the treacherous Sach Pass on the journey from Killar to Chamba.

I'm always up for adventure on my motorcycle and my ride through Chamba, Sach Pass and Pangi Valley was one of my craziest exploits yet! This circuit is no walk in the park - bikers call the rugged Pangi terrain the "mother of all difficult roads".

Parts of it boast the title of being the world's most dangerous road. Suffice to say the Himalayas dished out undoubtedly the toughest challenge for us riders!

The expedition starts from the scenic hill station of Chamba, leading me through exotic spots like Dharamshala, Kishtwar, quaint little Killar village and finally the breathtaking Sach Pass. The highlight was undoubtedly conquering Sach Pass - at 4400+ meters, crossing this high mountain pass tested every bit of my riding skill and determination!

From there I rode downhill to the Parvati Valley and concluded my tour in the adventure biker haven, Manali. You can opt to end your tour at Chandigarh or Delhi too via different routes.

  • Best Touring Season : November to February
  • Estimated Duration: 7-10 Days
  • Route : Jaipur – Udaipur – Jaisalmer – Pushkar – Jodhpur – Ajmer
  • Scenic Beauty : Immerse yourself in the rich cultural tapestry, vibrant festivals, royal charm, and heritage richness of Rajasthan.

Rajasthan has been high up on my wishlist as a motorcycling destination. On my bike, I got the chance to dive deep into the best of Rajasthan's rich cultural experiences across regal cities like Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur and beyond.

Cruising through Jaipur was a riot of colors - the vibrant markets with their glittering trinkets and fabrics were reminiscent of the grandeur of Rajasthan's royalty. In Udaipur, I lost myself witnessing gorgeous sunsets against the backdrop of the Pichola Lake.

Jaisalmer truly overwhelmed me with its golden desert landscape and intricately carved havelis. I found solace among the spiritual vibes in Pushkar and liberation watching the sunset from the Savitri temple.

The regal architecture in Jodhpur took me back to the era of mighty Rajput warriors. And finally, paying respects at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah was a sublime experience.

Rajasthan unfolded itself as a rich sensory experience blending heritage with scenic vistas. Being on my motorcycle, steered gently along twisting roads surrounded by Aravallis on one side and golden sand dunes on the other, felt nothing short of liberating.

Around each corner was a new visual delicacy - from bustling local bazaars to quaint hamlets to ornate palaces.

  • Best Touring Season : Throughout the year
  • Estimated Duration : Short-duration ride
  • Route : Mumbai – Coastal Highway – Alibaug – Murud – Dapoli – Anjarle – Guhagar – Ganpatipule – Tarkarli – Goa
  • Scenic Beauty : Experience the raw beauty of the Konkan Coast, with its small fishing villages, narrow roads, authentic cuisine, and pristine beaches.

You know which bike ride has stuck with me as one of my all-time favourites in India? Riding the Konkan coastal route from Mumbai down to Goa. Now I've done a fair bit of touring across India, but that stretch along the Arabian sea was just something else!

Instead of taking one of the main highways, I decided to take the scenic coastal road. And I'll tell you, that was one of the best decisions on two wheels! I simply took my time meandering through twisty palm-fringed roads overlooking endless white sand beaches on one side and the bluest sea on the other.

It was such a rejuvenating experience, just riding breezily from one fishing village to the next - exploring little seaside temples, grabbing freshly caught fish at local markets, stopping for cutting chai with villagers under shady trees. No busy tourist crowds anywhere, can you imagine! Each place more picture-perfect than the next, makes you feel like you're starring in a dang music video or something.

And with the forests, beaches, seafood, the Konkan has got its own special coastal culture. The locals dishes out such warm hospitality too. The 10 days I spent riding through rural coastal Maharashtra and northern Goa gave me memories and stories that'll last a lifetime!

  • Estimated Duration : 14 Days
  • Route : Chennai – Mahabalipuram – Pondicherry – Kolli Hills – Ooty – Madhumalai & Bandipur Tiger Reserves – Coorg – Chikkamagalur – Hampi – Goa
  • Scenic Beauty : Explore diverse landscapes, including ancient temples, tea gardens, wildlife reserves, coffee plantations, and enchanting beaches.

Riding through South India has been a dream trip on my motorcycle bucket list for as long as I can remember. The chance of experiencing the region's diversity - from ancient history to beaches, lush jungles, hill station vistas and more - makes this an epic cross-country adventure ride in my books.

And when I finally got to go from Chennai down to Goa, it did not disappoint! Whether I was negotiating the 70 breathtaking hairpin bends up Kolli Hills or stopping for coffee at a plantation in Coorg - the route was chock full of magic around every corner.

Temple hopping through magnificent Hampi ruins, crossing the Western Ghats multiple times and even hoping to glimpse tigers in Bandipur - talk about non-stop highlights!

Now I'll admit the two week journey wasn't all smooth sailing in terms of roads or terrain. But a bit of adventure is part of the package deal when exploring areas off the beaten tourist track! For every bumpy patch, I was rewarded with stunning scenery and warm local hospitality.

  • Best Touring Season : April to June, September to November
  • Estimated Duration : 7-8 Days
  • Route : Gangtok – Lachen – Gurudongmar Lake – Nathula Pass – Zuluk – Gangtok
  • Scenic Beauty : Explore steep and narrow roads, ancient Silk Routes, and captivating destinations such as Gurudongmar Lake, Nathula Pass, Thangu Valley, and Zuluk.

The North East India motorcycle tour from Gangtok to Zuluk is one epic ride every biking enthusiast should have on their bucket list. Starting in the hill station of Gangtok, you get to soak in sights like the colorful Rumtek monastery before the real adventure begins.

As you start the ascent towards Lachen, get ready for adrenaline rushing through steep and narrow roads with breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks. Reaching the sacred Gurudongmar Lake at 17,800 feet is the most spiritual highlight of this trip. However, caution is advised as the road has very tricky terrain.

Crossing historic mountain passes like Nathula la, once part of the ancient Silk Route, fills one with a sense of wonder. Imagine traversing the same high mountain pathways that traders once took between Tibet and India!

The former Silk Route settlement of Zuluk at around 10,000 feet offers a glimpse into the past too. As you ride through mountain hamlets like Aritar and Dzuluk, it is not difficult to envision caravans making their way through the same valleys.

  • Best Touring Season : October to March
  • Route : Goa – Dandeli – Hampi – Badami – Aihole – Pattadakal – Goa
  • Scenic Beauty : Experience the diverse landscapes, from Goa's beaches to the historical treasures of Hampi, Badami, Aihole, and Pattadakal.

For any motorcycle enthusiast who also loves history, the Heritage Tour from Goa to Pattadakal is a dream ride through some of India's most significant archaeological wonders.

Start by soaking in the tropical vibes of Goa's world-famous beaches, before gearing up for the journey of a lifetime. The next stop is the emerald jungles of Dandeli, where a tiger sighting will get your adrenaline pumping!

But it's Hampi that will truly captivate you - the ancient capital of the Vijayanagara empire with over 500 stunning monuments. Wandering through temple ruins that date back to the 14th century fills one with awe!

The magical ride continues to Badami, Chalukya capital known for its iconic red sandstone cave temples. Just down the road is Aihole, home to over 70 structures including the incredible 5th century Durga Temple.

Last stop is the architectural treasure trove of Pattadakal - with a complex of 8th century temples that made UNESCO's World Heritage list.

As you ride past these magnificent testaments to Indian temple architecture spanning different eras - the 4-5 day journey becomes a vivid dive into the past! For any motorcycle lover who enjoys history and architecture, this is an unforgettable trip that is equal parts recreational and educational.

  • Best Touring Season : September to March
  • Estimated Duration : 12 Days
  • Route : Kochi – Wayanad – Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary – Idukki – Munnar – Periyar National Park – Eravikulam National Park – Alleppey – Varkala Beach – Kochi
  • Scenic Beauty : Traverse through coffee plantations in Wayanad, the tropical forests of Western Ghats, tea plantations in Munnar, and the tranquil backwaters of Alleppey.

Kerala is every motorcyclist's paradise, offering diverse landscapes, vibrant culture and abundant wildlife. The ultimate ride through God's Own Country begins in Kochi, an ancient port town with a rich colonial past.

As you make your way inland, the route takes you through captivating terrain - from the lush rainforests of Wayanad to the stark natural beauty of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. The gushing waterfalls around Idukki make for a picturesque pitstop.

Adding to the magic is Kerala's living heritage, best experienced through dance forms like Kathakali or the ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu. Wildlife enthusiasts can look forward to spotting elephants, tigers, lions and exotic birds in sanctuaries like Periyar and Eravikulam.

After days filled with history, adventure and natural splendour, Alleppey's serene backwaters provide the perfect retreat. Conclude the epic 2 week tour soaking in the tropical vibes of Varkala beach, with its clifftop cafes and red laterite cliffs.

Riding through God's Own Country is no ordinary motorcycle journey, but an odyssey where culture, landscapes and wildlife cast an enchanting spell at every mile.

When it comes to epic motorcycle touring, the one ride that never lets me down is my trusted Bajaj Dominar 400. I've taken my hardy Dominar on countless expeditions - from the serene beaches of the Konkan coast to the towering mountains of Ladakh and many routes in between.

While planning these trips across various terrains, I consciously chose the Dominar 400 for its perfect blend of features suited to long distance touring. Its powerful 373cc engine makes light work of even steep uphill climbs to places like the Kolli Hills while maintaining stability on hairpin bends or broken village trails.

The comfortable upright riding position and reasonable weight makes many hours in the saddle effortless, without compromising maneuverability or balance. Even with pillion riders and luggage loaded up for weeks on the road, my Dominar 400 takes on any challenge the road throws our way.

Add the Dominar's respectable fuel efficiency figures while even having a top speed of up to 155 kmph where permissible. For me, it really is the ideal motorcycle for exploring the diverse landscapes India has to offer - dependable, practical and pumped up for adventure!
