Top 10 Best Uganda Luxury Safari Camps & Lodges
Philip is a renowned Africa expert and author of the Bradt guidebook to Uganda.
Uganda is one of Africa’s most underrated safari destinations. It is best known for its mountain gorillas, which can be tracked in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks. Rather less publicized is the fact that Uganda’s biodiverse network of parks also offers excellent chimpanzee trekking and a decent chance of spotting all the Big Five. Other attractions include some of Africa’s most scenic mountains and lakes, and a checklist of more than 1,000 bird species.
As for where to stay in Uganda, the country is served by a diverse network of accommodation, ranging from campsites and backpacker lodges to five-star hotels and world-class safari lodges. Below we introduce you to 10 of our favorite luxury Uganda safari lodges and Uganda safari camps.
The accommodations below are not ranked in a specific quality order.
1,316 Uganda Safaris
1. Mihingo Lodge, Lake Mburo NP
Situated in a private wilderness area bordering Lake Mburo National Park , Mihingo is an exclusive family owned lodge that stands out for possessing that elusive ‘wow’ factor. A dozen luxury tented chalets are scattered across a forested hill whose rocky summit offers wonderful views in all directions. There’s also a beautifully appointed open-sided dining area and a swimming pool set between the boulders. This is unquestionably the most luxurious Uganda safari lodge servicing Lake Mburo National Park. It has the added value of offering horseback and walking safaris, as well as night drives that come with a decent chance of spotting leopards. 21 Mihingo Lodge Tours
2. Mweya Safari Lodge, Queen Elizabeth NP
One of the most famous places to stay in Uganda, Mweya Safari Lodge boasts a commanding cliff-top position on the Mweya Peninsula in Queen Elizabeth National Park . Overlooking a stretch of the Kazinga Channel that’s favored by thirsty buffalo and elephant herds, it offers perhaps the most reliable in-house wildlife viewing of any Uganda safari lodge. There’s also plentiful birdlife in the gardens, and on a clear day you can see the snowcapped peaks of the Rwenzori. With 54 rooms, it is not as intimate or exclusive as smaller Uganda safari camps, but the prime location and on-the-ball management ensure it remains a very popular choice on upmarket safaris. 16 Mweya Safari Lodge Tours
3. Primate Lodge Kibale, Kibale NP
One of my very favorite Uganda safari lodges, Primate Lodge accommodates guests in luxurious stone and thatch cottages set in Kibale National Park , Uganda’s top chimpanzee trekking destination. The lodge is only five minutes’ walk from the main chimp trekking trailhead. Guest cottages are spaced out widely in an area of rainforest where you’re likely to see red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus and a wide variety of birds. Primate Lodge Tours
4. Paraa Safari Lodge, Murchison Falls NP
Among the oldest and largest of Uganda’s safari lodges, Paraa was constructed in 1959 on a slope overlooking the north bank of the Nile as it flows through Murchison Falls , the country’s largest national park. The 54-room lodge has undergone many face-lifts since then, but it still enjoys a wonderful location, best appreciated from the large and inviting swimming pool. It has comfortable, well-equipped rooms and a restaurant decorated in colonial style. Logistically, Paraa is perfectly sited for boat trips to the base of Murchison Falls and game drives on the productive Delta Circuit. 11 Paraa Safari Lodge Tours
5. Sipi River Lodge, Mt Elgon NP
Quality accommodation is thin on the ground in eastern Uganda, but Sipi River Lodge is a welcome exception. It stands in lushly wooded grounds on the slopes of Mt Elgon, an extinct volcano that ranks as Africa’s eighth-tallest massif at 4,321m/14,177ft. This is a great base for hiking in the fertile Elgon foothills and visiting a trio of pretty waterfalls that adorn the Sipi River. The main Sipi Falls is only a few minutes’ walk away, and the middle cascade actually stands in the grounds, within view of some of the cottages. With a cozy rustic feel that might be transplanted from the English countryside, this isn’t your average safari lodge, and the relatively high altitude ensures it enjoys a pleasant temperate climate. Sipi River Lodge Tours
6. Apoka Safari Lodge, Kidepo NP
Unquestionably the top safari lodge in northeast Uganda, Apoka stands on a rocky ridge overlooking a waterhole in Kidepo Valley National Park . Accommodation is in super-spacious chalets with canvas walls and private terraces, and there’s a wonderful natural rock swimming pool, as well as a shady thatched dining area with a view over the plains. Best of all, Apoka is the perfect base for exploring a remote and relatively little-known park where lions, elephants and buffalo are all likely to be seen on a daily basis. Apoka Safari Lodge Tours
7. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, Bwindi NP
Combining the feel of an exclusive safari camp with a gorgeous rainforest setting in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park , Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is without doubt one of the best places to stay in Uganda. Accommodation is in eight large and stylish standing tents, each fitted with two queen-size beds and a private balcony set deep in the forest. There’s no more luxurious base from which to visit Uganda’s mountain gorillas, especially as it lies practically opposite the main tracking assembly point at Buhoma, Bwindi’s park headquarters. Wildlife viewing doesn’t stop when you get back to camp: forest birds include the dazzling great blue turaco, plenty of monkeys pass through on a daily basis, and it’s not unheard of for gorillas to wander across the lawn! Gorilla Forest Camp Tours
8. Kyaninga Lodge, Kibale NP
This luxury owner-managed property on the outskirts of Fort Portal boasts the most impressive architecture of any Uganda safari lodge. Built almost entirely from wood and thatch, it consists of eight spacious cottages spaced widely along a stilted wooden walkway on the forested rim of Kyaninga Crater Lake. The view across the lake toward the Rwenzori Mountains is sensational, there’s some great walking and canoeing on the property, and it’s one of the best places to stay in Uganda prior to chimpanzee trekking in nearby Kibale National Park . Kyaninga Lodge Tours
9. Mount Gahinga Lodge, Mgahinga NP
The standout luxury base for exploring Mgahinga Gorilla National Park , Mount Gahinga Lodge has a peerless setting below a trio of tall volcanic peaks belonging to the Virunga range bordering Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Under the same dynamic management since it first opened in 2002, the lodge comprises seven massive cottages that combine local Bafumbira stone architecture with modern comforts and excellent amenities. Being only five minutes’ walk from the main park entrance, Mount Gahinga Lodge is ideally positioned for gorilla tracking in Mgahinga, as well as other activities such as golden monkey trekking and day hikes to the Virunga peaks. Mount Gahinga Lodge Tours
10. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Bwindi NP
Resembling an Africanized version of a palatial Alpine ski chalet, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is the highest lodge in Uganda, perched at an altitude of around 2,100m/6,889ft on a forested ridge close to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park ’s Nkuringo Gate. Eight cozy 80m 2 /860ft 2 guest cottages each include a king-size bed, a spacious lounge complete with plump sofas and roaring log fire, and a stylish modern bathroom. There’s no finer base than Clouds for gorilla tracking in Bwindi’s remote southwest, and the views towards the volcanic Virungas, with active Nyiragongo glowing orange after dark, are truly stunning. Luxurious touches include a personal butler, a pampering foot massage after your gorilla trek, and superb cuisine complemented by a selection of imported wines. Mountain Gorilla Lodge Tours

11 Beautiful Places to Stay in Uganda
If you’ve read our blog about the 12 Best Reasons to Visit Uganda , chances are you’re already be daydreaming about lakes and waterfalls, chimpanzees and mountain gorillas. Uganda has some outstanding accommodation options that mirror the diversity, beauty, and friendliness of ‘the pearl of Africa’. Here’s our guide to the very best lodges in Uganda.
Best Lodges in Bwindi
Gorilla Forest Camp
Gorilla Forest Camp is designed to have a light ecological footprint – but it will still make a big impact on you! The perfect starting point for encounters with the mountain gorillas of Bwindi, this small lodge offers authentic luxury within the boundaries of the world-famous national park. In fact, gorilla families often visit the lodge and its surroundings , so you may well get to enjoy your first great ape sighting without any trekking at all. Additional activities include cultural visits to a local Batwa village , while special sedan chairs offer differently-abled guests the chance to participate in gorilla treks.
Bwindi Lodge
Your gorilla adventure starts here! This responsible luxury lodge overlooks the dense, ancient forests of Bwindi . Situated in the northwestern Buhoma area, Bwindi Lodge is close to the home ranges of three habituated families of mountain gorillas – which makes for wonderful viewing opportunities. The ‘impenetrable’ forests of Bwindi are also home to chimpanzees and many bird species – you may well see or hear them from your stone and tile banda (carefully designed to keep you snug on those cool mountain nights).
Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge
Can you experience sophisticated luxury in a rainforest ? Yes, at this lodge you certainly can – as well as enjoying views of the Virunga Volcanoes and the Great Rift Valley, two of Africa’s most spectacular natural landmarks. From your stone cottage, you can venture into the forest on a guided walk, searching for birds, butterflies and giant, centuries-old trees, or visit a local village to learn about the amazing relationship the people have with their forest home. You can also of course trek up into the mountains to see the famous mountain gorillas – an experience you will never forget.
Best Lodges in Murchison Falls
Nile Safari Lodge
Nile Safari Lodge takes its time from the mighty river that flows through Murchison Falls National Park, where this family-owned ecolodge is located. Built entirely of organic materials, it blends in beautifully with its surroundings – and yet still offers exceptional river views from every room . You can even indulge in a bubble bath in your room while you gaze out over the Nile. From the lodge, you can explore the area, including visiting the famous (and dramatic) falls, and ticking off a great many species of African wildlife from your must-see list. You can even walk in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway ; the famous author once survived a plane crash nearby.
Bakers Lodge
Also in Murchison Falls National Park, Bakers Lodge is named for Samuel Baker, the first European explorer to view the remarkable sight of the Nile River being forced between a narrow gap in the rocks and tumbling over a precipice. Stylish and charming, this lodge sits right on the riverbank, which guarantees wonderful views, plus the chance to view the wildlife and birds which are drawn to the water. Activity options include boat excursions on the Nile as well savannah game drives and tracking wild chimpanzees in the nearby Budongo Forest. This is your chance to become a modern-day explorer!
Best Lodges in Entebbe
Hotel No.5 is one of Uganda’s top boutique hotels. Featuring a spa and wellness center, as well as a restaurant and bar, its location in Entebbe (near Uganda’s main airport) makes it the perfect place to begin or end your Uganda safari. This chic boutique hotel effortlessly blends a warm Ugandan welcome with style and luxury and offers a tranquil, leafy sanctuary in which to rejuvenate after your international flight or prepare yourself for a return home after your adventures. Our favorite feature is the swimming pool – very refreshing indeed on a tropical afternoon!
Best Lodges in Kibale
Ndali Lodge
If your Ugandan itinerary includes the Crater Lakes region (and it really should), then you might want to check out this charming country house. Ideally situated for excursions to Kibale Forest (chimp trekking, anyone?) or Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary (for birding without equal), Ndali Lodge also offers closer-to-home delights. These include the chance to stroll around the working farm and revel in the heady fragrance of the vanilla processing plant, or take a guided walk to the lovely Muhoma Falls. You can also explore local banana plantations, and wander through misty valleys in search of birds and butterflies.
Kyaninga Lodge
It’s hard to imagine a more awesome setting for a luxury lodge: Kyaninga Lodge sits between a crater lake and the towering Rwenzori Mountains . This is a breathtakingly beautiful part of Uganda, with mist-shrouded mountains, lush forests and deep, mysterious lakes. Add in a very luxurious lodge, and you have all the ingredients for romance. On cooler evenings, you can snuggle up closer to the fireplace, or enjoy a soak in your claw-footed bath. Oh, and needless to say, the morning coffee is outstanding!
Best Lodges in Jinja
Wildwaters Lodge
A unique opportunity to spend time on an island in the midst of the mighty Nile… Kalagala Island is about 15 miles downstream from the source of the Nile at Jinja. As the name of the lodge suggests, the waters surrounding the island are anything but tranquil! From your luxury suite, elevated above the river on huge granite boulders , you can remarkable views of the foaming rapids, with the sound of rushing water always audible. Stroll along the raised wooden walkways to the restaurant or bar, or get to know the Nile a whole lot better on a white-water rafting expedition.
Best Lodges in Kidepo Valley
Apopka Safari Lodge
A wonderful place to stay in the remote and achingly beautiful wilderness that is the Kidepo Valley. This small, intimate lodge was hand built by local artisans, with the guest rooms situated between the boulders of a kopje (or rocky outcrop). From this elevated position, you can enjoy sweeping views of classic African landscapes – wide, open, golden plains dotted with wildlife. The lodge itself offers more than enough in the way of diversions, including a rock-hewn pool, but you’ll want to descend to the savannah to walk or game drive amongst the awesome wildlife.
Best Lodges in Queen Elizabeth National Park
Kyambura Gorge
Kyambura Gorge Safari Lodge takes its name from a spectacular nearby feature and is also ideally situated for visiting ‘QEP’ (Queen Elizabeth National Park). Stay in a luxurious modern interpretation of a traditional ‘banda’ and enjoy activities including boat excursions on the hippo-thronged Kazinga Channel . A short walk leads from the lodge to the start of the chimpanzee trekking trail – and you can even book a soothing foot massage for when you return to the lodge! At Kyambura Gorge, you’re also within easy game drive reach of the famous tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha Sector .

WONDERFUL LODGE
This is an amazing lodge in a wonderful location. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the food was amazing. They even set up a dining table outside, next to a roaring fire. Unfortunately we were the only guests so the ambience was missing. Also they didn't have white wine in the bar which I found a bit strange for a luxury lodge. We saw and heard the hippos in the grounds when we were escorted back to our room.

Best of Hospitality
I have been a guest at many highly rated facilities, but Kigambira Safari Lodge is outstanding and has been my ideal in many ways: the food, the room, the friendly staff, the location and attention to the environment and nature, the security and all that goes with good hospitality. I experienced all in full measure. The abundance and proximity of the life in the wild, the green and water around were an extra gift for me. I rate Kigambira as an excellent place for hospitality in general.

Exceeded expectations!
Our birding group was double-booked at another lodge and blessfully was booked into this lodge. Service was impecable, the rooms were stellar, and the chef pulled off a multi-course meal for us with a few hours notice. Most impressive was we checked in at 4 pm and had laundry completed by 9 pm! Be warned that hippos wander their grounds after dark so you need to be escorted by security if you are out when its dark.
5 star Lodge
Had a very enjoyable and comfortable stay at Kigambira Safari Lodge. Staff extremely helpful, food delicious and room very comfortable. Loved the hippos in the garden in the evening, especially the one who came and drank out of the edge of the swimming pool.
Experience the untamed beauty of Africa like never before at Kigambira Safari Lodge. Journey through Uganda's breathtaking landscapes.

Elephant Plains Lodge
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Elephant Plains is a brand new luxury lodge located on the most spectacular view point in the whole of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Perched 941 metres above sea level, high upon the western escarpment of the Albertine rift in the north east of the park, the lodge offers panoramic views stretching for miles over the huge open grasslands to lake George.
Set in 80 acres of pristine wilderness, a short drive to the park gate, nowhere else here can you sleep closer to the equator. Nestled next to beautiful lake Kikorongo this is where the open plains merge into the crystal waters and seeing large numbers of Elephants coming to drink from the water, hence the lodges name.
A short drive to the Kasenyi plains offers open savannah filled with various wild animals. This area has fantastic game viewing, a huge number of grassland birds and is a major breeding ground for the Ugandan Kob which readily attract lions and other big cats to the area. The open plains and large number of wildlife mean photographic safaris are extremely rewarding.
Video tour Elephant Plains Lodge – Queen Elizabeth National Park
The northern sector of the national park is called Kasenyi, or better known as the “Kobs Mating Ground”. In this open savannah area you will find hundreds of Uganda kobs. The kob is an elegant antelope, similar to the impala, which lives in harems up to twenty females, leaded by one dominant male. Consequently, it is not exceptional to encounter a hungry lion in this area, waiting for his chance to pounce on one of the unsuspecting animals. Big herds of buffaloes, giant forest hog, warthogs, monitor lizards and sometimes a lonely elephant can be seen during a game drive in Kasenyi as well.
The Mweya Peninsula is one of the best places to startNyamunuka Crater Lake your game drive from. The forested area offers a great variety of game tracks and at the same time it hides many narrow natural trails, created by the inhabitants. A game drive in this area will give you a fair chance of finding the elusive leopard and watching herds of elephant. Also waterbucks, warthogs, hyenas and the giant forest hog are regularly seen around the Mweya Peninsula. As it is located closely to the shores of the Kazinga Channel do not be surprised when you encounter a hippo grazing peacefully between the bushes, in the early morning or evening. Many bird species like the Black Bee-eater, Verreaux’s Eagle-Owl and Malachite Kingfisher inhabit this isolated peninsula as well.
This famous 32 kilometers long channel is a natural link between Lake Edward and Lake George and is said to contain the world’s largest concentration of hippos. A boat trip will offer you the opportunity to view hundreds of hippos laying lazy in the water or plunge timidly when you pass. Crocodiles will be found motionless at the shores and also buffaloes and waterbucks come to the water to cool off. Occasionally you may see an elephant coming to quench his thirst. Moreover, the Kazinga Channel is a true birders paradise as it is home to hundreds of (water) bird species. You may spot Pelicans, Fish Eagles, Kingfishers, Cormorants and the bright coloured Saddle-billed Stork.
One of the most scenic parts is the impressive crater area in the northwest region of the park. Formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago, you can now explore a series of dramatic craters and dry calderas in the hilly landscape, offering stunning views of the park and its surroundings. The birdlife is spectacular, with large flocks of flamingos, but also buffaloes and other wild animals come to drink here
A real Tarzan territory can be found in the northeast of the national park. This is where the savannah grassland suddenly ends into an impressive gorge of 100 meters deep and 16 kilometers long. The steep slopes are formed by the water of the Kyambura River and make a beautiful contrast with the valley that is covered by lush riverine forest. A walking safari takes you along the river, deep down into the heart of the gorge. Follow the sounds of the chTree climbing lion in Ishashaattering chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys and other primates. Or try to catch a glimpse of the colourful forest birds, while you find your way through the thick bushes, with a blanked of dense forest canopy raising high above you.
A part of Queen Elizabeth National Park consists of tropical rain forest including the legendary Maramagambo Forest. It is one of the largest forests in Uganda, with different walking trails traced out. A guided nature walk will lead you through the lush primary forest, home to a large number of primates, butterflies and bird species. Baboons, vervet monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys and even chimpanzees can be hiding in the trees or down in the bushes. Deeper into the forest you will find the Bat Cave, a large cave which serves as a shelter for thousands on Egyptian Fruit Bats and several pythons that prey on these bats. Nearby is also the tranquil, picturesque Blue Lake. As the name implicates, it is famous for the intense blue colour of the water.
Follow the road to the southwest of Queen Elizabeth National Park and you will enter the remote plains of Ishasha. The landscape slowly changes as you pass large herds of Uganda kobs, topis and buffaloes, grazing peacefully in the savannah highlands. In the far end, the winding Ishasha River forms the natural border between Uganda and DR Congo. Here you will find hippos at the shores, lazy drifting with the stream. The birdlife enriches the trees along the river, while curious colobus monkeys and baboons often come to take a look at the visitors. The highlight of this area, however, is the tree climbing lion, who likes to take a nap in the upper branches of huge fig trees. So keep your eyes open when your guide takes you for a search along one of the circuits in the southern sector!
A popular photo stop is the Equator. The spot where this imaginary line crosses the national park is marked by two large circles. Not far from the Equator is the Queen’s Pavilion. This was a temporary shelter to host Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh during their visit in 1954. Five years later a permanent pavilion was built for the visit by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. A new information centre on the site includes internet facilities and a coffee shop.
