The city of Reguengos de Monsaraz (Alentejo), Portugal was the seat of the  5th UNWTO Global Conference on Wine Tourism , organised by the UNWTO (World Tourism Organisation) together with VisitPortugal and held on 8th-10th September 2021.

Main Theme and Goals of the Global Wine Tourism Conference

The main theme of the wine tourism conference was ‘Wine Tourism – a driver for rural development’; the whole focus of the wine tourism conference organised by UNWTO was the role that wine tourism plays in the integration between regional social and economic factors. Speeches from several of the guests invited to the wine tourism conference pointed out the ability of wine tourism to develop opportunities and generate potential in remote rural destinations.

UNWTO decided to invite to the wine tourism conference a great number of professionals coming from very diverse wine tourism businesses. The point of having so many experts involved in the conferences was to find concrete and solid solutions to build a strong foundation for future actions related to wine tourism. Moving forward, as it came out of the wine tourism conference, the goal is to achieve a more sustainable, comprehensive and strong network of actors involved in wine tourism in rural areas of the world.

WineTourism.com at the Global Wine Tourism Conference

The speech that opened the 5th UNWTO Global Conference on Wine Tourism was held by Pau Roca, Director-General of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) on 9th September 2021.

On 10th September 2021, our CEO Calle Nilsson took part in Session 3 at the wine tourism conference, titled  Data, data, data… – how to better understand wine tourism . The session was moderated by Paula Sousa, Wine Tourism Director at Quinta da Aveleda and Calle was joined by other two speakers, Giorgio Delgrosso, Chief of Statistics at the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) and Daniel González, Senior Project Manager at Vivential Value (Spain).

Calle was asked by Paula Sousa why global standard data is important from a business point of view and, after giving a brief introduction to WineTourism.com as a company, Calle identified the lack of data behind the number of wine tourists as the main pain point in the wine tourism industry right now. He stated that it is impossible to compare data of wine tourists visiting wine regions because there is no standardised practice related to it.

What is necessary now, from Calle’s perspective, is to start benchmarking and standardising data; wine countries should benchmark their numbers with other wine countries, and wine regions should do the same. This is going to become fundamental especially due to the ongrowing trend related to the wine tourism movement.

Our colleague Ana Flávia Bonatto Damasceno had the opportunity to be at wine tourism conference together with Calle Nilsson, and this is her thought on the experience:

“The 5th UNWTO Conference on Wine Tourism was a great opportunity to discuss the impact and importance of wine tourism regarding rural development. To witness that different organizations and companies are interested in promoting a better, more sustainable, and diverse wine tourism worldwide is great, makes me confident to see a great perspective going forward both for wineries and wine enthusiasts”

Conclusions from the 5th UNWTO Conference on Wine Tourism

As it was pointed out by the UNWTO in their  final powerpoint , conclusions were drawn concerning 7 main areas discussed at the wine tourism conference.

Here is a brief summary of what should come next for wine tourism:

  • There is a need for a national wine tourism policy and strategy to ensure coordination among several actors. Investments have to be done to support SMEs, infrastructures and the creation of new talents.
  • The Covid-19 pandemic is not over yet, so everyone involved in wine tourism should take into account safety measures to ensure a Covid-free and safe environment for visitors and workers.
  • To secure the growth of the wine tourism industry, there is a need for innovation, storytelling, digitalisation and a strong client/visitor relationship.
  • Educate wineries and other businesses involved with wine tourism to practice sustainability. Everyone must keep in mind that all decisions can impact the future of the next generations.
  • Governance is another key point to work on, as public and private actors must come together to cooperate and coordinate their work in the interest of the environment and the wine tourism business.
  • Engage wineries and winemakers in partnerships with gastronomy experts, chefs and local farmers. There needs to be a stress on the value of ‘localhood’.
  • Last but not least, the importance of data. The development of common indicators and a wise use of big data can help the wine tourism industry take a step forward.

UNWTO Global Conference on Wine Tourism in Italy

UNWTO Global Conference on Wine Tourism in Italy

Travel Biz News —

The 6 th edition of UNWTO Global Wine Tourism Conference will take place on 19-21 September 2022, in Alba in the Piemonte region of Italy.

The Conference will focus on the role of innovation in the future of wine tourism, how can wine tourism be more sustainable and what are the opportunities of digital and social to enhance the wine tourism value chain and create local benefits.

“As the sector’s recovery get underway, the conference will represent a unique opportunity to learn from experiences that face up these challenging times to ensure a successful and resilient wine tourism sector in the future”. said UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili .

“Wine tourism is much more than just selling wine, which clearly is important.  When you sell a bottle of wine, you are selling the territory behind that bottle, the culture of that territory, the history of the men who designed these landscapes with the rows of vines,” Massimo Garavaglia , Italian Minister of Tourism said.

“Wine-related tourism has a component in environmental sustainability. It is a component of slow tourism, partly different from traditional tourism. And it is no coincidence that 90 percent of tourists have a food and wine experience during their visit.”

Over the two days of this edition, 300 professionals from the sector, leading experts and institutional representatives will benefit from the live debates, keynote speeches and workshops that experienced speakers will bring to Alba.

Since 2016, the Conference has highlighted the importance of wine tourism to the socio-economic development of destinations and has served as a platform to exchange experiences, identify good practices and promote wine tourism as a tool for sustainable development , according to statement issued by UN World Tourism Organization.

UNWTO becomes “UN Tourism”

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) enters a new era  with a new name and brand: UN Tourism. With this new brand, the Organization reaffirms its status as the United Nations specialized agency for tourism and the global leader of tourism for development, driving social and economic change to ensure that “people and planet” are always center stage.

UN Tourism: Transforming tourism for a better worldTo achieve this goal, UN Tourism engaged the services of Interbrand, the leading global branding agency. Interbrand successfully translated the Organization’s renewed vision for tourism into a new visual identity and brand narrative.

This involved renaming the Organization, transitioning from UNWTO to UN Tourism. At the same time, a new brand narrative was meticulously crafted, one that seamlessly aligns with UN Tourism’s central mission and priorities. This narrative pivots around three main messages: the UN as a global altruistic organization, the notion of connecting humans around the world, and the concept of proactivity and movement.

Enhancing the well-being of individuals, safeguarding the natural environment, stimulating economic advancement, and fostering international harmony are key goals that are the fundamental essence of UN Tourism

By moving away from acronyms, UN Tourism adopts a more approachable stance and capitalizes on its strengths: the “UN”, signifying authority, and tourism, a simple and relatable concept for all. This change has been endorsed by the Organization’s membership, highlighting its united support for the profound transformation and reinvention of UN Tourism in recent years, as it has become more agile, visible, and ever closer to its Member States, partners and the sector as a whole.

With 160 Member States and hundreds of private sector affiliates, UN Tourism has its headquarters in Madrid, Spain, and Regional Offices in Nara (Japan) covering Asia & Pacific, Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) for the Middle East, as well as forthcoming Regional Offices for the Americas (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Africa (Morocco). Its priorities center on promoting tourism for sustainable development in line with the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Global Goals. UN Tourism promotes quality education, supports decent jobs in the sector, identifies talent and drives innovation and accelerates tourism climate action and sustainability . – UN Tourism Jan. 2024

“The Tourism Authority of Thailand launches ‘Thais Always Care’ campaign in collaboration with other organizations to ensure tourists’ safety and enhance positive image.”

The “Thais Always Care” online communication campaign was officially launched by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in collaboration with the Tourist Police Bureau, Grab Taxi (Thailand), and Central Pattana (CPN) to ensure the safety and welcome of tourists from around the world. Partners involved in the campaign have strengthened their safety measures and are utilizing technology to ensure the safety of tourists in Thailand. This includes installing CCTV cameras, implementing strict security checks at department stores, and utilizing technology like the “POLICE I LERT U” application to offer emergency assistance to international visitors. The campaign will also involve working with international KOLs to enhance the positive image of Thailand’s tourism assets and reinforce the country’s reputation as a safe destination. -Tourism Authority of Thailand

Vietnam  to welcome 17-18

million  tourists  this year

Việt Nam’s tourism industry has set a target to welcome 17-18 million foreign visitors in 2024, approaching the pre-pandemic record in 2019 when COVID-19 had yet to disrupt global travel.

In 2023, the figure hit 12.6 million, surpassing the initial target set earlier in the year (before China, which accounted for a third of foreign arrivals to Việt Nam pre-pandemic, announced reopening plans) by 57 per cent and achieving the adjusted goal of 12-13 million.

The number of domestic travellers, meanwhile, stood at 108 million, up 6 per cent compared to the set target. Tourism activities generated about VNĐ678 trillion (US$27.85 billion) in revenue, 4.3 per cent higher than the yearly plan.

Despite substantial recovery in 2023, the Việt Nam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT) said the domestic tourism recovery will still face challenges in the year ahead. This is particularly true in the context of the unpredictable global developments stemming from economic uncertainties, regional conflicts and climate change.

Việt Nam’s socio-economic conditions remain stable; the economy continues to grow and inflation has been kept in check. But the persistent threat of disease and natural disasters are likely to create uncertainty affecting production, business activities and the daily lives of citizens.

According to forecasts from the UN World Tourism Organisation and the World Travel and Tourism Council, international travel activities may fully recover by the end of 2024, reaching the levels achieved in 2019. However, the recovery is expected to be uneven across different regions.

The ever-changing demands of international tourists require higher standards in product quality, diversity and unique experiences. The trends of integrating information technology, artificial intelligence and digital transformation are envisioned to drive the emergence of new forms of tourism.

Based on these analyses and projections, Việt Nam aims to serve 17-18 million foreign and 110 million domestic visitors this year, with an expected total revenue from tourism nearing VNĐ840 trillion.

To achieve the stated objectives, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyễn Văn Hùng has instructed the VNAT to continue focusing on advising and improving the institutional framework, policies, reviewing identified deficiencies for adjustment, and international commitments in the field of tourism. Collaboration with other ministries and sectors is emphasised to formulate policies for developing various types of products such as agricultural tourism and digital transformation in tourism. He also noted the need for attention on strengthening tourism statistics and digital transformation to enhance the effectiveness of data collection, providing reliable figures to efficiently support tourism policy planning.

The ministry also calls for enhanced training for tourism officials and workers to meet requirements of new situations, especially in terms of language proficiency and technology expertise. — VNS

Global Medical Tourism market

USD 136.93 billion in 10 years

Newark, Jan. 01, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Brainy Insights estimates that the USD 20.07 billion in 2022 global Medical Tourism market will reach USD 136.93 billion by 2032. There is a growing trend towards health and wellness tourism, with individuals seeking medical treatments, preventive care, wellness programs, and holistic health experiences. Medical tourism destinations can capitalize on this trend by offering comprehensive health and wellness packages.

Furthermore, integrating digital health technologies, including telemedicine, virtual consultations, and electronic health records, can enhance the accessibility and coordination of medical tourism services. Digital platforms can streamline pre-travel consultations, post-treatment follow-ups, and information exchange between healthcare providers and patients. Introducing new and advanced medical treatments, therapies, and procedures can attract medical tourists seeking cutting-edge healthcare solutions. Countries and healthcare providers that stay at the forefront of medical innovation can position themselves as leaders in the industry.

In addition, customized and personalized medical tourism packages catering to individual patient’s unique needs and preferences present an opportunity for service providers. Tailoring experiences that include cultural activities, recovery retreats, and concierge services can set providers apart in a competitive market.

Besides, wellness tourism, including genetic testing and personalized health assessments, is gaining traction. Medical tourism destinations can offer specialized wellness packages, including genetic evaluations and preventive health screenings, to attract individuals interested in proactive healthcare.

China eases visa application for US tourists

BEIJING: China will simplify visa applications for tourists from the United States from Jan 1, cutting the documents required, according to a notice on Friday (Dec 29) on the website of the Chinese embassy in Washington.

The move is the latest by China to revive tourism and boost the world’s second-largest economy following a slump during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tourist visa applicants in the US will no longer need to submit air ticket bookings, hotel reservations or an invitation letter, the embassy’s notice said.

Beijing earlier cleared the way for passport holders from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia to visit the country without visas from Dec 1.Visa-free treatment will run for 12 months, during which tourists from those six countries can visit China for up to 15 days. China also expanded its visa-free transit policy to 54 countries in November.

The number of inbound tourists to the country plummeted during the pandemic due to the country’s strict COVID-19 control policies.

China’s visa-free policy facilitates

travels from 6 countries

Around 214,000 people from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Malaysia entered China in December 2023, an increase of 28.5 percent compared with November, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA).

China’s unilateral visa-free policy for ordinary passport holders from these countries took effect on December 1, facilitating inbound travels from there.

Of these inbound trips, 118,000 were made by ordinary passport holders without a visa, accounting for 55.1 percent of all inbound trips from the six countries during this period. Around 91,000 visa-free entries were made for travel and business.

Thanks to the visa-free policy, ports in the southern Chinese city of Nanning welcomed many inbound travelers. Data showed that 121 inbound travel groups of nearly 2,800 people entered China through ports in Nanning in December.

Since the inception of the visa-free policy, ports in Beijing had, by December 31, witnessed more than 12,000 visa-free entries from the relevant countries.

The NIA pledged more optimized entry-exit management policies for foreigners to facilitate their business, study, work, and life in China.

International flights to China have picked up since Beijing dropped COVID-19 restrictions a year ago but are still only at 60 per cent of 2019 levels. – Xinhua

Alba and wine tourism: welcome to the "Global Conference on Wine Tourism"

Wine tourism in piedmont and its varied offerings.

Wine tourism in Piedmont

Piedmont has around 45 thousand hectares of vineyards, 49 wines including DOC and DOCG, an export turnover of one billion euro and more than 550 thousand users of wine tourism. These are staggering figures for a sector that involves 18 thousand farms, 280 enterprises and 54 operating wineries.

The wine hills are visited every year by thousands of people, who come from all over the world. With such a huge number of visitors, it is easy to see how the wine tourism sector is constantly growing and how this can not only strengthen gastronomic excellence, from traditional to more sophisticated formulas, but also lead to innovative solutions that link wine with the sphere of wellness .

This has led to the creation of unique combinations that merge the activities of the wine cellars with open-air experiences, true wine resorts or wine relais , structures with spas and hydromassage pools in the midst of the vineyards, which also allow people to find peace surrounded by nature with relaxation-yoga courses in the breathtaking Langhe landscape.

Langhe and Roero

Langhe and Roero

The langhe, green viticulture, and women at the helm.

The Langhe, green viticulture

To give some statistics on the Italian wine tourism sector, suffice it to say that its value is around 2.65 billion Euro. This sector therefore represents an extraordinary asset for our country. It is also for this reason that the Langhe, aiming at the constant growth and ever-increasing development of wine tourism, is moving towards a future aimed at sustainability and inclusiveness in rural production areas.

Thus, green viticulture was born: it is entirely focused on reducing daily carbon dioxide emissions. A true ecotourism , which aims to cut pollution by halving the traffic of heavy vehicles on the UNESCO heritage hills and avoiding the use of plant protection products, herbicides and chemical fertilisers, which are replaced by organic substances and agronomic practices for the wellbeing of the vines. All this is done to protect biodiversity and the natural environment, for the sake of sustainability and respect for the land and the farmers, without whose precious work there would be no wine.

Female leadership in the sector, especially in the area of communication and marketing, is also giving particular impetus and creativity to wine tourism in the Langhe, with proposals that pave the way for new values and styles, increasingly oriented towards open spaces and an all-round experience of winery, wine, environment, landscape, catering and leisure.

Alba and the "Global Conference on Wine Tourism"

global conference on wine tourism

Alba , a city known for its white truffles , its charming historic centre and picture-postcard surroundings, is also (and above all) an undisputed destination for wine tourism.

And here we are at the sixth edition of the 'Global Conference on Wine Tourism' , in 2022 . The city of Alba, which will host the study sessions, has won the amphora that symbolises the event.

It is no coincidence, in fact, that the choice has fallen on the wine-growing landscapes of Piedmont, an area that produces wines that are highly appreciated worldwide. The hills of the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero UNESCO World Heritage Site will, therefore, be the focal point of one of the most important international showcases in the field of  wine tourism . This is a historic opportunity that the city of Alba will be able to harness during the three September days, aiming to achieve a tangible objective: that of  sustainability  and  innovation .

These are the main features of the 2022 edition, which rebounded during the terrible days of the pandemic, when the UNWTO noted that the key to the  sustainable development  of territories around the world is rural tourism.

The event will be attended by delegations from the world's top wine destinations: more than 30 speakers including ministers and political figures, tour operators, technicians and managers, industry experts and media operators.  Three days of meetings , for general and in-depth sessions on the state of the art of wine tourism, in which the practices of the various countries will be discussed. All surrounded by visits to wineries and consortia, including tastings and talks with local producers.

Preserving paradise: USC students learn about sustainable hospitality in the Galápagos

Kevin Ayres and students from HRSM pose aboard a ship in the Galapagos Islands.

The Galápagos Islands: the name alone conjures images of tropical beauty and natural treasures. Spanish Captain Diego de Rivadeneira called them "Las Islas Encantadas" on his first visit in 1546, and that nickname lingers still. Charles Darwin's studies there in 1835 played a big part in the development of his theory of evolution. Now, University of South Carolina students follow in his scholarly footsteps.

Through a partnership with USC's Education Abroad Office and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management students have a variety of opportunities to live and learn in one of the most exclusive tourism and natural heritage destinations in the world. Semester-long experiences are available as well as three-week Maymester excursions.

This May, School of Hospitality and Tourism Management Instructor Kevin Ayres led an Economically Sustainable Hospitality Operations class, exploring the challenges of keeping hospitality and tourism businesses sustainable while remaining profitable.

Kevin Ayres poses with four students outside Ranti Coffee

Ayres and USFQ Professor Paola Torres led the students on visits to three businesses on the trip, beginning with Hotel Indigo, an IHG property on San Cristóbal Island. The class met with the hotel management team and took a full tour of the operation. Each student then wrote a paper with recommendations for possible improvements in hotel operations with a focus on sustainability.

The second visit was to the Metropolitan Cruise Lines expedition ship La Pinta. There too, the students observed and asked questions while touring and meeting with the crew. They also wrote papers with operations suggestions.

"We learned about sustainability and the huge difference between learning about sustainability in Columbia, South Carolina, versus learning about sustainability in the Galápagos," said Ava Jackson, a retailing student who took the class to conclude her freshman year.

Students sit through a presentation from Hotel Indigo in the Galapagos

The last business visit was to Ranti Coffee. "It’s a Galápagos-only company. They have their own tree, roasting room and showroom, all on San Cristóbal," Ayres says. The students took a close look at every part of the operation, again discussing and questioning and offering their suggestions for operational improvements.

The hospitality and tourism industry is by far the largest economic driver in the Galápagos, employing 40 percent of residents. With 97 percent of the islands set aside as a national park, it is an ideal setting for studying sustainable hospitality and tourism, a topic of critical importance in South Carolina. USC’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management has produced many of the current leaders of those industries, and the next generation is learning through experiences like these.

Study abroad experiences are not all work, of course. Students also have a chance to explore new cultures, meet new people, and have a lot of fun.

"My favorite part of the trip was getting to stay with my host family," Jackson says, adding that she joined the family in attending a soccer game while there. "Being able to stay with them gave me the opportunity to see San Cristóbal through the eyes of locals. This is something I wouldn’t have gotten to experience if I wasn’t able to stay with a host family. I appreciate USC setting me up with such a caring family."

Ava Jackson diving in the Galapagos near a sea turtle

As all USC trips do, the most recent Maymester excursion offered many chances for students to explore, including nature hikes, snorkeling at spots including the world-famous Kicker Rock, scuba diving (students can earn certification through USC, and College of HRSM professor and certified instructor Richard Southall teaches a class on sustainability, eco-tourism, and the diving industry in the Galápagos) and of course plenty of time to enjoy some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Asked what will stick with her in the future, Jackson says, "How amazing our world is. We had opportunities to see such a variety of animals (marine iguanas, Galápagos tortoises, blue footed boobies) that only exist in the Galápagos. I also learned from the other classes, it was truly a multidisciplinary program."

For those unsure whether to study abroad, Jackson's advice is simple and emphatic: "Do it, take in every experience you can. It’s something you’ll look back on the rest of your life and be so grateful that you did. You get to meet so many people that you wouldn’t have without studying abroad and seeing the world. Totally immerse yourself, go on all of the excursions. You will have experiences and memories that you will treasure. I learned so much and had a blast!"

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
