Actually, Nusa Lembongan is one of my favorite places in the world and a must on any Bali itinerary . If you are limited on time, you can easily visit Nusa Lembongan on a day trip from Bali. The journey across the Badung Strait is super easy and takes only 30-45 minutes.

So let’s take a look at how to get to Nusa Lembongan on a day trip, the best time to visit and the top things to do on this paradise island.

If you want to do a day trip from Bali to Nusa Lembongan, you have two options. Book your own fast boat tickets and organize transportation once you get to Lembongan, or book a guided tour. To get the most out of your day I recommend you join a tour, however, I wanted to give you both options below.

Experience all the highlights of Nusa Lembongan in one day as part of this highly-rated all-inclusive tour departing from Bali.

A private driver will pick you up at your hotel in Bali between 7:00 and 8:00 am and take you to Sanur. From there you board a fast boat (only 30 minutes), and when you arrive in Lembongan your driver will be waiting for you.

The two most beautiful beaches on Nusa Lembongan, Dream Beach and Mahagiri Beach, are both included in the tour, in addition to the Devil’s Tear, the Mangrove Forest, the Yellow Bridge and a nice lunch.

Spend 7 incredible hours exploring one of my favorite islands in Indonesia without having to worry about a thing. Everything is taken care of for you.

Keep in mind that pick-up in Seminyak, Central Canggu, Central Ubud, Uluwatu, Jimbaran, and Nusa Dua is included in the tour price. If you are outside of these areas, you can contact the tour company to arrange transport at an additional cost or book your own driver.

Don’t let the name “Instagram tour” deter you, it only means you will see the most picturesque places on the island. I’m normally not an organized tour person, but I loved this one!

As mentioned earlier, the fast boat ride from Sanur in Bali to Nusa Lembongan takes only 30-45 minutes and is super affordable for everything that’s included. You can book your tickets in advance here .

Hotel pick-up and drop-off in certain areas in Bali (Kuta, Seminyak, Legian, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Ubud Center, Denpasar, Sanur) and on Nusa Lembongan are included in your return ticket. So all you have to do is be packed and ready to go in front of your hotel at the agreed-upon time.

There are many fast boat companies to choose from, I like to book through Viator so I get free cancellation and have the option to pay later. Paying online is also so much more convenient than having to bring cash.

Most companies depart Bali early in the morning, between 7:00 and 9:00 am, and return from Lembongan between 4:00 and 5:00 pm.

What to know before you visit Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons – dry and wet. The best time of the year to visit Nusa Lembongan and Indonesia, in general, is February to April (avoid Easter).  That’s when everything is lush and green after the rainy season, while the weather is mostly clear and sunny.

The main rainy season runs from November to February, peaking in January, and the main tourist season runs from July to August and during Christmas. I have been to the island during these times as well and have had a great time, however, I prefer February to April.

The best time to surf Nusa Lembongan is during the dry season, which runs from April to September. This is when the waves are at their best due to consistent Indian Ocean swells and the weather is ideal for surfing with little rainfall and offshore winds.

Keep in mind that the boat ride from Bali to Lembongan, across the Badung Strait, can be bumpy during the wet season, with unpredictable weather and rough seas. But it is nothing compared to how bumpy the fast boat from Bali to Lombok can be.

Nusa Lembongan is a small island, and the best way to explore is on foot or by renting a scooter or bicycle. There are no cars allowed, only the vans transporting visitors from the fast boat to their hotels.

You will most likely be arriving in Jungut Batu, my favorite part of the island. If you want to stay here, you can easily explore on foot or by bicycle. If you want to explore the entire island, I recommend renting a scooter or a buggy if you’re traveling with your family.

Scooter rentals are available at various locations on the island, and the cost is around 75,000 IDR per day. Bicycles can be rented for around 50,000 IDR per day. Read more in my Nusa Lembongan transportation guide .

It is important to note that the roads on Nusa Lembongan can be narrow and bumpy, and there are no traffic lights and few signs. But don’t let that stop you. Driving around, feeling the sun on my skin and the wind in my hair, is my favorite thing to do on Nusa Lembongan.

One day in Nusa Lembongan

Jungut Batu Beach is the main beach on Nusa Lembongan and the perfect place to start your day trip. With its crystal-clear waters and white sand (though a little rough), it’s the ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and beach clubs along the beach where you can grab some breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Make sure to take a walk along the Jungut Batu Boardwalk, the view from there with Bali’s Mt. Agung in the background is just breathtaking. If you go all the way to the end you’ll reach Coconut Beach, a little gem most people miss.

You can easily spend your whole day trip to Nusa Lembongan in Jungut Batu Village, in addition to lounging on the beach and feasting on tasty treats, you can also go stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling and surfing . There are also several boutiques along the main street where you can burn off some cash.

If you don’t feel like renting a scooter or bike, you can walk up to the Mangrove Forest where you can hang out at my “secret spot” in Lembongan, Agung Beach Club .

Nusa Lembongan is known for its incredible underwater world, and there are plenty of tour operators who offer day trips including snorkeling. I recommend this full-day snorkeling & Mangrove Forest tour departing from Bali.

If you go on a day trip to Lembongan on your own, you can easily rent snorkeling gear or maybe a stand-up paddleboard all over the island. Just look out for the many stakes in the water, left over from seagrass farming that was once the island’s main source of income.

As I mentioned above, Jungut Batu is a great place to go paddle boarding because the bay inside the reef is often very calm. Rent a board from one of the many warungs along the beach, they will often have signs outside. If not, just ask. The price for one hour is often 150.000 IDR. For snorkeling, make your way to the Mangrove Forest.

The Mangrove Forest, home to a variety of wildlife, including fish, birds, and crabs, is a must-visit attraction on Nusa Lembongan’s north coast. You can take a guided tour through the forest with a local who will eagerly explain everything there is to know about the mangroves. It’s a great way to support the local economy.

There are many warungs along the beach before you reach the Mangrove Forest, one more Instagrammable than the next. I wrote about my secret spot on Lembongan many years ago, and it looks even better today. Just take a look below.

You can spend your day at the warungs as long as you buy something to eat and drink. You can also rent snorkeling gear, stand-up paddle boards and kayaks.

If you do decide to rent a scooter or buggy, you have to make your way to Dream Beach, the most beautiful beach on Lembongan . With its crystal-clear turquoise waters and powdery white sand, it’s no wonder why it is such a popular spot. Just be careful when you go swimming, as the waves and currents are very powerful here.

If you have the time, stop by Devil’s Tears, a coastal formation named after the powerful waves that crash against the jagged rocks, creating a spectacular display of water sprays and mist. The waves are so strong that they create a thunderous sound that echoes throughout the area.

You can watch the waves from a safe distance on the rocky shore or from the nearby viewing platform. The view is particularly breathtaking during sunset when the sky turns into a vibrant hue of orange and pink, creating a magical atmosphere.

Finish your day trip with a stop at the Yellow Bridge, a unique and iconic landmark that connects Nusa Lembongan to its neighboring island, Nusa Ceningan. The bridge is painted bright yellow, making it a striking feature against the clear blue waters of the channel.

The bridge is a popular spot for tourists to take photos and admire the stunning view of the surrounding islands. The Yellow Bridge is also an important transportation route for locals, who use it to commute between the two islands. You can walk or drive across the bridge to explore the charming island of Nusa Ceningan, which is known for its cliffs, the Secret Beach , vibrant coral reefs and Le Pirate Beach Club .

I absolutely love to drive around the two islands and just see where I end up.

You don’t need to bring much on a day trip to Nusa Lembongan. If you have your swimsuit on, some sunscreen and your camera, you’re all set. Here’s a quick list:

• Sunscreen: With the tropical climate, the sun can be intense. I recommended you bring a water-resistant reef-safe sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect you skin from harmful UV rays.
• Swimwear: Nusa Lembongan is known for its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters. Don’t forget to pack or wear your swimsuit so you’re ready for a refreshing dip in the ocean. I love this one .
• Towels: I always bring this Turkish cotton towel with me. It is perfect for a day at the beach, as a cover-up if I get sunburned and I have even used it as a yoga mat before on Lembongan.
• Water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when spending time in the sun. Bringing a reusable water bottle is an eco-friendly option and will save money on buying bottled water. Many cafés on Lembongan offer free refills.
• Cash: Many places on Nusa Lembongan do not accept credit cards, so it’s important to bring cash for purchases such as food, souvenirs, and activities. Also, there are only a few ATMs on Lembongan and I have experienced them running out of cash.
• Camera: With stunning views and picturesque landscapes, Nusa Lembongan is a photographer’s paradise. Don’t forget to bring a camera to capture memories of the trip. I used both my Olympus om-d em-5 and GoPro throughout the whole say.

For such a small island, Nusa Lembongan offers a variety of dining options that cater to different tastes and budgets. From local warungs to international restaurants, you can find something to satisfy their cravings.

One of my favorite cafés for breakfast is B Fresh on the south side of Jungut Batu. I especially love their wholewheat waffles served with fruit and they also do a mean bacon and egg roll.

For lunch, I always stop by the Eco Deli, one of the OGs on the Lembongan restaurant scene. Here I always go for one of the salads and a piece of banana bread for dessert. If you’d rather take advantage of the stunning view from the Jungut Batu Boardwalk, you can’t go wrong with The Deck , yet another old-timer on Lembongan, and the Thai Pantry.

Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan are small islands. They can be both be explored by motorbike under one hour. However, it offers quite a list of great things to do to fill up two or three days.

1. Discover Nusa Lembongan’s beaches

Not all the great beaches of Bali are located on the Bali mainland. The Nusa Islands have a handful of soft white-sand beaches great for sunbathing. Nusa Ceningan has stunning Mahana Point and Secret Beach. Lembongan beaches are Dream Beach, Mushroom Bay, Coconuts Beach, and Jungutbatu Beach.

2. Cliffs at Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is a stunning viewpoint and cliff jumping point on Nusa Ceningan. The silky blue water is wild and swimming near the coastline isn’t recommended. The viewpoint goes all around the cliff and there is a small blowhole behind when you walk past the bushes. 

3. Beach clubs at Nusa Lembongan

The Nusa Islands have beautiful beaches and the same goes for the beach clubs. Chill the afternoon at one of the many clubs and dip into their pool or the sea in front to cool down. The beach clubs are incredibly picturesque and some offer outstanding meals as well!

On Nusa Lembongan visit Ginger and Jamu, Ohana’s and Sandy Bay beach club with the last two on the more expensive side.  The Sand and Le Pirate Beachclub on Nusa Ceningan are a little more intimate and affordable to hang for the day.

4. Day trip to Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is one of those places that, one day, will be featured in a movie scene. The 200-meter high cliffs (that you are able to hike down!) offer some of the most stunning views of Bali and is one of the things you must do in Bali!

A single boat trip to Nusa Penida only takes 15 minutes and from there you can explore the island by car or motorbike – an easy but absolutely great thing to do from Nusa Lembongan.

5. Cloudland Bar at sunset

Grab a beanbag, order a Bintang or another drink and fully enjoy the sun going down after another incredible day in Bali. The cloudland bar is a great, nothing fancy or posh, bar at the cliffside of Lembongan. It is a little hard to reach as there is no good road, however, Google Maps is right about which path you should follow.

6. Lembongan Mangrove Boat Tour

Take a small boat or stand-up paddleboard through the mangrove forest on the north-east side of Nusa Lembongan. Enjoy the calming river ride, clear waters and serenity. You can also book a day tour to discover the mangrove forest and explore the crystal-clear waters surrounding it.

7. Surfing at Lembongan

Lembongan offers great year-round surfing for the beginner and intermediate surfers. Spend the morning taking surfing lessons at Coconuts Beach or go extreme at Mahana Point in Ceningan. 

8. Devil’s Tear – Dangerous thing to do on Nusa Lembongan

Experience the powerful waves crashing into the cliffsides on Lembongan islands. Devil’s Tear is an impressive, somewhat dangerous, blowhole where the water can easily reach meters-high into the air. Please do not get too close to the edge.

9. Dreampoint viewpoint

A second great sunset point is Dreampoint on Nusa Ceningan located next to the hotel Twilight Huts Lembongan . The old tree and swing offer a good view and during low-tide, you are able to walk down see the fisherman getting their catching of the day.

10. Dive or Snorkel with Manta Rays

In between Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida are well-known diving and snorkeling spots to see Manta Rays, the Mola-Mola sunfish, and dolphins! A 20-minute boat ride from Nusa Lembongan gets you to the Manta Bay. Get ready to dive into the water and be amazed by the size of these gentle giants. Respect their environment and make sure to never touch them.

An icon for these two Nusa Islands is the Yellow suspension bridge connecting them. The bridge is just wide enough for two motorbikes to cross each other. In between the islands, at the location of the bridge it gets extremely low-tide during sunset. Sometimes as low so you could walk from one side to the other.

Getting to Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Ceningan

The Nusa Islands are all very easy to get to from Bali mainland. The main harbor is Sanur, the second option is Kusamba port and from both it a 25-minute trip. There is no actual pier and you have to walk a tiny bit to get onto the boat. Therefore it is best to wear shoes or sandals that are easy to remove. From Ubud or Uluwatu, it both is a 60 to 90-minute drive (without traffic) to Sanur harbor. There is also a possibility to do a day tour leaving from various places in Bali ( see availability for a tour to Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan ).

Boat price to Nusa Lembongan

A return ticket from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan, including hotel transfer, costs 500.000 IDR (~ 35 USD) per person with a minimum of two people. Or you can buy a one-way ticket per person at the harbor (without hotel transfer) for 20.000 IDR (2 USD) per person.

How to get around Nusa Lembongan & Ceningan

The two islands can be seen by motorbike in one hour of driving. The two islands are a bit slower-paced than Bali and easy to discover if you are comfortable with driving a motorbike. Lembongan can also be explored by renting a car + driver but unfortunately for Ceningan, this is not an option as cars can’t cross the bridge.

A visit to Dream Beach should be at the top of your Nusa Lembongan things to do list.

It’s the most popular beach on the island so you can expect to see lots of tourists here. To avoid the crowds, try to visit early morning.

At low tide, you can walk around the rocky headland and into a cave to discover a secluded beach that you will most likely have all to yourself.

For thrill-seekers, the cliffs near Dream Beach can be explored and you will find some awesome cliff-jumping spots.

Devil’s Tear is located just around the corner from Dream Beach. In fact, it’s quite a short distance to walk there from Dream Beach which will take you no more than 5 minutes.

Devil’s Tear draws attraction to visitors to see the forceful flow of water entering the cave and spitting it back out again with a roar.

The water inside Devil’s Tear is crystal clear and you may be lucky enough to spot some green sea turtles cruising around in the cove.

There are also a number of warungs (food and drink vendors) to purchase a refreshing coconut, cold water, and other snacks.

Be sure to combine your visit to Devil’s Tear with the Tidal Pools which are located on the same rugged cliff coastline.

NUSA LEMBONGAN SEAWEED FARMS

At first thought, the seaweed farms don’t seem to be a very interesting attraction, but think again!

Seaweed farming is a very unique attraction to the island which was introduced in the ’80s and it was the main source of income for many locals residing here.

The best place to view the seaweed farms is in the channel between the two islands, Lembongan and Ceningan.

There are a number of small restaurants along the water’s edge where you can perch up and observe the locals farming the seaweed.

If you have a drone, I highly recommend sending it up and capturing some shots from above. The seaweed farms form a pattern much like that of a knitted blanket.

The Manta Point snorkeling tour is a half-day activity and it includes pick-up and drop-off from your hotel on Lembongan Island Bali, and the spots visited on the tour include Manta Point, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, and Mangrove Point.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE TOUR

Our snorkeling tour began at 8:30 am when we met with our boat and tour guide who sorted us all out with some snorkeling gear and fins before jumping on board the boat.

We cruised on the boat for around 30 minutes across crystal-clear waters until we arrived at Manta Point.

Within seconds of arriving, our snorkeling guide started yelling out “manta, manta, manta.”

We spotted a manta ray cruising along the surface of the water and we were quick to jump in for a snorkel.

These majestic creatures are absolutely incredible. They glide effortlessly through the ocean and are really friendly to swim with.

The manta rays can be quite intimidating to begin with due to their body size of up to 5 meters, though you will soon realize they are harmless, humble giants.

YELLOW BRIDGE

The iconic yellow suspension bridge has become an Instafamous spot and it’s by far one of the top things to do in Nusa Lembongan Bali.

The Yellow Bridge is located between Lembongan Island Bali and Ceningan Island.

It’s a pretty awesome experience riding a scooter over the ocean across the Yellow Bridge Lembongan.

It’s also a great spot to take some photos if you time it right with the traffic.

EXPLORE NUSA CENINGAN

While you’re at the Yellow Bridge, be sure to cross the channel and continue the adventures over on Nusa Ceningan Island for a few hours.

With plenty of fun-fuelled activities to do such as blue lagoons, secret beaches, and cliff jumps to name a few, Ceningan Island is not to be missed during your visit to the Nusa Islands.

HANG OUT AT COCONUT HUT

Eat, drink, and play at the Coconut Hut Lembongan!

This groovy spot on the island features an 18-hole mini golf course, a restaurant with an extensive menu, a bar serving up cocktails, craft beers, and imported wines, and an all-around friendly atmosphere.

The Coconut Hut is open 7 days a week from 8 am – 11 pm. Check out their Instagram to see what’s happening during your visit.

SURFING AT SHIPWRECK POINT

This world-class reef break attracts surfers from all over the world, though surfing the right-hand reef break at Shipwreck Point is not for the inexperienced surfer.

On a good swell, Shipwrecks is by far the best spot on the island to surf and can hold waves of up to 10 feet.

Surfboard rental shops can be found throughout the main street of town and you can find a rental board for approximately 50,000 IDR for 2 hours.

If you are not a keen surfer, it’s not a bad spot to spectate from the beach at one of the many shady shacks along the waterfront.

STROLL ALONG THE COASTAL WALK

At the very southern end of Jungutbatu Beach, you’ll find a wooden coastal boardwalk that hugs the edge of the cliffs and offers stunning views across the ocean.

Grab a coffee and take a stroll along the boardwalk in the early hours of the morning, or head here in the afternoon for a sunset cocktail at one of the many cliffside bars.

The easiest way to find this coastal walk is by searching Thai Pantry on Google maps and this will lead you right to it.

SUNDOWNER AT THE DECK

The Deck Lembongan is one of the more popular bars on the island (and my personal favorite) to experience a dramatic sunset, paired with a refreshing cocktail.

They also have a fresh and healthy menu with breakfast, lunch, and dinner options available.

You can find this unique spot along the coastal boardwalk mentioned above and opening hours are Monday to Sunday from 7:30 am – late.

EXPERIENCE THE LAGO PONTOON

A newer attraction and one of the best things to do in Nusa Lembongan is the Lago Pontoon experience.

The Pontoon is a great spot to hang out with your friends in the sun, drink some beers, listen to some tunes, and create memories that will last a lifetime!

A private boat will pick you up from the beach and transport you to the floating pontoon which is located just a few hundred meters from the shoreline.

Every morning at the crack of dawn, an awesome sight to check out is the local food markets that line the street in the main village on the way to Ceningan Island .

LEMBONGAN BANYAN TREE

Right next to the local food markets, you’ll find the largest Banyan tree you’ve probably ever seen!

It’s pretty hard to miss, but hey, I thought I’d include it in this guide anyway.

It is said that Banyan trees bring prosperity to the local Hindu community and they attract the gods and spirits of deceased ancestors.

Grab your widest angle lens and get down low to the ground to try and capture a cool photo of this spot.

All in all, when thinking about what to do at Nusa Lembongan, the Banyan Tree is an absolute must!

SANDY BAY BEACH CLUB

Looking for some downtime with an unbeatable view? Head on over to Sandy Bay Beach Club to get your fix!

This is by far one of the best beach clubs on the island and the perfect spot to put your feet up, grab a feed, and take a dip in the oceanside pool.

With a wide selection of food choices and a long list of cocktails on offer, it’s a recipe for a good time if you ask me!

Sandy Bay Beach Club is one of the more popular restaurants for dinner and sunset, so I recommend booking in advance to secure a table.

MUSHROOM BAY

Mushroom Bay is one of the most well-known locations on the island and for sure not to be missed on your list of things to do on Nusa Lembongan!

The beach itself is absolutely stunning, featuring calm turquoise waters, and golden sands – an ideal spot for beach bumming and cooling off in the ocean.

Keen on an adventure? Many tour operators are based here at Mushroom Bay, offering boat trips and snorkeling tours to the reefs surrounding the island for as little as 200,000 IDR ($13 USD) per person.

But, if you’d prefer to stay on dry land, there are a number of beachside restaurants and resorts that line the strip where you can grab lunch and drinks and enjoy the island life!

It’s safe to say that this is one of the best Nusa Lembongan things to do!

HIDDEN BEACH

Another great beach to check out when exploring the island is Hidden Beach, which is located on the other side of the cliff from Mushroom Bay.

The easiest way to get here is the road access, and then a short stroll from the jump-off point to the beach.

Alternatively, if you’re a strong swimmer, you can swim around the cliff at the north end of Mushroom Bay.

Hidden Beach is a great location to escape the crowds on the more popular beaches.

Use this opportunity to take a refreshing dip in the ocean with no one else around and snorkel the colorful reefs just offshore.

BARONG SHAKTI ACAI BOWL

If you’re a lover of acai bowls, I highly recommend stopping by Barong Shakti on the main street parallel to Jangutbatu Beach.

The owner of this little hole-in-the-wall cafe is super friendly and it’s a cool spot to hang out for breakfast or any time during the day in between all your adventures.

Made from all organic produce, Barong Shakti’s bowls are low-key the best acai and smoothie bowls on the island.

PASIR BEACH (PANTAI PASIR PUTIH)

At the northernmost tip of the island is the stunning Pasir Beach, boasting glistening white sands, and a palm tree paradise.

It’s an unmissable place to include on your list of things to do on Nusa Lembongan.

Also located on Pasir Beach is the famous Mahagiri Resort which features a beach bar, a swimming pool, a volleyball pitch, and watersport activities are also available.

You could easily see away a couple of hours here or just stop in briefly to take some awesome photos under the swaying coconut palm trees!

JUNGUTBATU BEACH

Jungutbatu Beach is the longest beach on the island and the main strip where you’ll find the majority of oceanfront accommodations.

If you like long beach strolls, or simply just want to get sunkissed and salty, this is the perfect place that provides exactly that.

All of the island’s best surf breaks such as Shipwrecks, Lacerations, and Playgrounds are located just offshore from Jungut Batu Beach.

If you’re looking to surf, you can make the long paddle across the reef or ask a local to take you out to the break by boat for a 50,000 IDR return trip.

VISIT THE UNIQUE CEMETERY

This is not one of the most popular things to do on Nusa Lembongan, but I personally found it pretty unique and interesting enough to include in this travel guide.

Located somewhere along the main road to Dream Beach, you’ll come across this very strange but unique cemetery on the roadside.

Each burial site has a colorful umbrella on the tombstone, keeping the deceased shaded from the sun.

I don’t know about you but I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

PUNCAK TEMPLE (PURA PUNCAK SARI)

Puncak Temple is a Hindu temple situated at the top of the hill in Lembongan Village and is frequently used for all types of ceremonies. 

Take a short walk up the set of stairs to see this beautiful stone temple at the top of the hill and enjoy the view of the island while you’re at it.

JENGGALA HILL – SUNRISE IN LEMBONGAN

Last but not least in this guide of things to do on Nusa Lembongan is Jenggala Hill, a hillside location to witness an incredible sunrise during your visit.

Jenggala Hill is in fact a resort, but they do allow outside guests to visit as long as you purchase something from the bar or restaurant.

If your budget allows, you can also book a private room at Jenggala Hill Resort . With a view like this, you’d be silly not to!

This spot is arguably the best view on the island, and on a clear morning, Mount Agung volcano in Bali can be seen looming in the distance!

Be sure to set your alarm for an early rise and experience an unforgettable sunrise!

LEMBONGAN BALI – THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Now that we’ve discussed all the things to do Nusa Lembongan, let’s cover all the other essentials you should know before coming.

The island is pretty self-sufficient and has many convenience stores, pharmacies, and ATMs, so you don’t need to worry about bringing many supplies from Bali.

From my experience having visited all three of the Nusa Islands, here is an overview of how many days I recommend spending on each island:

• Nusa Lembongan – 3 Days
• Ceningan Island  –  1 Day
• Nusa Penida  –  3 Days

This will give you plenty of time to enjoy all the awesome spots that the Nusa Islands have to offer!

Hello, we are first time travelers to Bali and would love your recommendations for accommodation on either Nusa Lembongan or Penida or both. We are planning to do a dive or two, but would love the ability to walk out from our accommodation and snorkel as often as we like. Also happy to join any interning tours. Would be great to be close to really good quality snorkeling spots. Access to eating places would be great, but would prefer away from busiest spots. Any advice is gratefully received.

Hi Amanda, on Lembongan, the accommodations I recommend can be found in this guide, it’s a small island and everything is within 5 to 10 minutes drive so you can base yourself at either of the places mentioned depending on your budget and easily be able to walk to nearby beaches and restaurants. Nusa Lembongan Island: A Complete Travel Guide

A mere 45 minutes by boat from Bali lies a paradise oft overlooked by many visitors to the island. Friends often report back on trips to Ubud and Kuta, but rarely do I hear about Nusa Lembongan.

Why? Well I have absolutely no idea.

Nusa Lembongan is 8 kilometres square and is surrounded by the clearest turquoise water imaginable. Some beaches are populated by boats, others are teeming with coral and marine life. Others still remain deserted. The population of 5000 hardly requires a transport system of any kind so visitors are reliant on either that provided by their accommodation or the restaurant they choose to dine at.

Of course, a scooter if my preferred way, giving ultimate freedom to zip with the locals on the roads where only scooters and pick up trucks with bench seats in the trays. Any other vehicle is virtually never seen.

Nusa Lembongan is slowly being discovered by the world, however. And it isn’t discussions online or IRL that tell me this; it is the amount of construction work going on. A few villas were being built next to mine, and one place was even building a small water park. Yes, this place is absolutely about to explode and for a very good reason.

Nusa Lembongan is one of the best places to visit in Bali , providing a perfect balance between raw natural beauty, relaxation, and adventure. And of course, the price tag is very attractive to your foreign dollar. Even the expensive things are reasonable.

How to get to Nusa Lembongan

Put simply, your best option is to get a fast boat to Nusa Lembongan. I spent a lot of time considering our options. I read a lot of reviews of fast boat services that ranged from poor customer service and pickups not turning up to rough trips at sea with everything getting wet and the driver losing control. So my decision was taken from a “which operator?” as well as a “should we actually go?” perspective.

The boat to Nusa Lembongan is only a 45 minute trip (not half an hour like everything else says) from Sanur, and it was a clear day both ways so we had no issues. I’m so glad we went. On the way back the swell was larger and the boat did bounce a few times over the waves, waking B-Man up from his nap in my arms. Regardless, we never felt unsafe.

There are a number of fast boats that do the trip including Rocky, Scoot, Marlin, Sanur Express, Glory Express and Eka Jaya. There may be others but these were the boats I saw either at the beach in Sanur or around Lembongan Harbour. In the end, we decided to go and went with Rocky because they seemed to have the best reputation and reviews. Rocky was also one that was recommended by our villa.

My tip: choose a ferry service that leaves in the morning as boating conditions are almost always better in the morning.

Orientation

Your fast boat will most likely drop you at Jungut Batu Beach. This is the long beach on the north eastern side dotted with boats. Jungut Batu is one of two main villages on the island and is where most activities will begin, including snorkelling, boat trips, and surfing days.

The other village is Lembongan village. If you’re looking at a map (see below), it is located on the southern side around that small grid. When you are whizzing around, you’ll see a large temple, this is the heart of Lembongan village and on religious festival days like Nyepi, full moon or a wedding, the temple will be abuzz with activity. From Jungut Batu, you’ll pass Nick’s place on the right, turn right and the temple will be on your left. You’ll go straight to go to Mushroom, Dream or Sandy Bay Beach, or turn left after the temple to continue around to the yellow bridge.

You’ll find that you’ll spend most of your time around the beaches on the western side as it is a lot more built up. The north-east is covered in a lot of mangrove and there is a lot less development in those parts. There are a number of accommodation options and restos on the north on the way to the mangrove but there are a lot more on the hill that overlooks Jungut Batu Beach. This hill is where our villa was located and seemed fairly central to everything. I found this to be a great location. (Look for Lembongan Harmony Villas on the map to see where we were located).

Things to do on Nusa Lembongan

Take a lembongan island tour.

If you aren’t keen on hiring scooters, an island tour is a great way to get acquainted. We paid 300k rupiah (~AUD$30) for a 4 hour tour, which took us to Dream Beach, Devil’s Tear, through Jungut Batu village to Mahigiri Beach, the yellow bridge, and the Mangrove forest. Because we didn’t have all day, we didn’t spend a lot of time at each place, but the best part of the tour was honestly, just riding around in the back fo the truck all morning. It was a great way to get a taste of the island life, attempt to get our bearings by following along the map, and seeing a lot of the roads in a short amount of time. It was pretty close to a full lap.

Devil’s Tear

Devil’s Tear is a blowhole around the point from Dream Beach. The ocean crashes into the cliff resulting in a subtle (at times) mist rising from the sea. I was surprised at the number of tourists at the attraction, actually. It’s a decent spot for a photo opp, but I wouldn’t rate it as a must sea (pun intended). There are plenty of blow holes around the islands, this is just the easiest to see from land.

Learn to surf

As you will read many times over, there are three main surf breaks on Nusa Lembongan: Playgrounds, Shipwrecks, and Lacerations. These are all located on the western side of the island and we could actually see all of them from the back of our villa (in the feature photo, you can see Shipwrecks and Lacerations). From the air, they all meld into one, but the distances and style of breaks ensure they have distinct names. There are plenty of surf schools along Jungut Batu beach so just head down the day before you want to have a lesson and book something.

Take a Nusa Lembongan snorkelling day trip

Of all the Nusa Lembongan activities I undertook, this was certainly one of the highlights. Over the course of three hours one morning, Captain Ricky took me to Manta Bay (on Nusa Penida), Crystal Bay, and the underwater Buddha statues. Each was a completely different type of snorkelling experience and I’m so glad this is how I did it, rather than just seeing coral and fish at each spot. Manta Bay was terrifying and intense, yet exhilarating and addictive; Crystal Bay had some beautiful coral and colourful fish that rivalled some spots I’ve been to in the Whitsundays , and the underwater Buddha was something else entirely. All three are worth visiting.

Shop at markets

There actually aren’t many spots to get your haggling fix on Nusa Lembongan. There is the odd stall here and there but we all know markets work best when you can hop between them. The highest concentration of markets with clothes and bags that I found was down south, past Lembongan Village, on the corner as you approach the Cenigan Channel (i.e. the water you see).

They are just before the Mamma Mia Bar and Grill and there’s about 5 or 6 of them all together. As a yardstick, I got a hat and a shirt for 120k. Remember, their opening price is just to test the waters. Little Grey Box has a great guide on how to haggle in Bali (though having experienced it first hand, the lesson is much better in person!)

DIY scooter tour of Nusa Cenigan

You could easily spend your entire stay on Lembongan without giving Cenigan a single thought, but when it’s attached by bridge accessible by scooter, the temptation is too great to pass up. It’s much quieter and I had an absolute ball whizzing along the highway, through the trees and past the many warungs, huts, villas and massage places. I mean, it’s a smaller scale, but it’s still built for tourism.

Eat at Le Pirate Beach Club, and have a drink at Seabreeze. Continue around to Mahana Point and jump from the 10m cliff jump spot (for a 50k rupiah fee). With the adrenaline still pumping ride around to Secret Point and Blue Lagoon where you can find more cliff jumping. You can take a zip line across the gorge at Driftwood bar and further round there are yet more cliffs to jump from.

Nusa Penida tour on scooters

If you aren’t planning to stay on Nusa Penida , it’s still worthwhile to take a day trip from Nusa Lembongan. Your accommodation should be able to assist in setting this up. Our tour was a full day from 10-5 and visited Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach, Kelingking Beach (including the ridiculous hike down and back up), and Crystal Bay, where you can swim, snorkel, and even eat fish grilled on the beach for a few dollars.

Also note that there are loads more places to see on the island and you should be able to choose which ones you want to see, or at least have different tour options.

Read and swim in your villa

I found that relaxing on the beaches did not seem to be common. Because it’s so hot, the beaches don’t offer much shade, and there are no umbrellas, I think visitors prefer to chill out in their villas or hotels where there is shade and a private pool. We certainly felt like this. Some of the beaches are also not that inviting, which I’ll talk about now.

Nusa Lembongan beaches

Dream beach.

Tucked away on the southwest tip of Nusa Lembongan is Dream Beach, in my opinion, the best beach on the island. The beach is small in scale, but the sand is soft and waves are gentle. It’s often too hot to just sit out in the sun for hours on end, but it’s perfect for a swim, and the rocks on the eastern side do actually provide some shade for a few people.

From Dream Beach there’s a lovely walk around the coast along the rocky cliffs to Devil’s Tear and onwards to Sandy Bay. Don’t forget your hat!

Jungut Batu Beach

Jungut Batu Beach is the main beach where most ferries will pick up and drop off passengers from Bali. The water is littered with boats and the beach is covered in their anchor ropes. The anchor ropes actually seem like they act as a bit of a deterrent for sunbakers as the sand doesn’t feel all that inviting. The water is plenty clear though and very calm for swimming.

Mahagiri Beach

Further north along the coast from Jungut Batu is Mahagiri Beach. I don’t think it’s an official beach title, but the name of a very large resort on the corner of the island. The resort itself has a huge restaurant and bar with good cocktails, and the beach is the widest and whitest on the whole island. There are beach chairs and umbrellas galore, and it has been colourfully decorated with flags, palm trees, beached boats, and of course, a large resort pool that you could easily sneak into. I could actually see myself spending time with a book on this beach. In fact, judging by outside appearances, it seems like a reasonable place to stay.

Mushroom Beach

Mushroom beach also sees its fair share of boats coming and going due to the calmness of the water. This calm also makes it a great swimming beach. There are a few resorts along the beach with good food and the village that winds up from the beach has some interesting warungs and local shops. If you’re not staying in the area it’s well worth a wander.

Sandy Bay Beach

Sandy Bay Beach might be more well known for the Beach Club and the sunsets. A confident swimmer would be comfortable swimming at Sandy Bay, just know how to navigate waves, rocks, and dead coral.

Where to Stay on Nusa Lembongan?

Lembongan is not well connected in terms of getting around, and with a population of only 5,000 across 8quare km, why should it be? So if you’re not planning on renting scooters, you might want to be somewhere within walking distance of some of the things to do and eat on Nusa Lembongan. Somewhere in Jungut Batu Village would be nice, because there is loads to do around the beach there, and it’s one of the few places trucks actually cruise to pick people up. There aren’t any taxis per se, but they are closest you’ll find. (We needed a lift back up the hill to our villa so we found a guy in a Scoot truck doing mainies  and we paid him 50,000/$5 to for the ride).

Up on the hill would be my best recommendation though, purely for the views they afford over the island. The villas are scattered over the hill and there are walking paths down to the beach which will only take 5 minutes from the top. It is somewhat harder to arrange transport though if you need to go somewhere on a whim.

It was just indescribable waking up to this every morning.

We stayed at Lembongan Harmony Villas and I could not have been happier there. It is a complex of 3 villas so the management team were very focused on us. They were super helpful in arranging taxis, tours, massages, basically anything we did, it was just a call to the villa manager away. We had two double beds and a single spread across an upstairs and downstairs bedroom. We had our own pool and of course, no villa would be complete without deck chairs and umbrellas. And the view was the icing on the cake! It’s a perfect mid-range price point option for families.

However, like much of Bali, you can find some real value very easily. You can find some really quality bungalows for under $50 a night. I won’t recommend any because I haven’t stayed at any, but use my guidelines above to find something I know you’ll love. Make sure to filter for those rated 9+, there’s loads of them under $50!

Nusa Lembongan, Cenigan, or Penida?

The Nusa Islands are made up of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Cenigan and Nusa Penida. Lembongan is the second largest but the most developed. It is where all the boats from Bali land, it has the most accommodation options, the best roads, and infrastructure.

Nusa Cenigan is the smaller island in between. There are things to do on Nusa Cenigan and ample accommodation options, but it is only connected by a thin bridge that only scooters can cross. Lembongan is where all the boats land so you would need to work out a transfer once you landed, probably by local boat.

This is not impossible, resorts may provide a transfer if you stay on Nusa Cenigan, and if not, you could probably find someone on Jungut Batu beach to take you, but it is one extra step. And besides, you’d probably want to spend time on Lembongan as well. My experience showed that Lembongan was great to stay on, and Cenigan was a perfect day trip from Nusa Lembongan by scooter. I’d recommend Cenigan if you want to spend most time relaxing, away from people, and only venture out occasionally to do something active.

Nusa Penida, on the other hand, is much larger than both islands put together. There is plenty to do on Nusa Penida , probably as much as on Lembongan, but it is much more spread out. The roads are also awful. I mean, really awful. The traffic is light, but it takes a long time to get anywhere because many of the roads are so bumpy with potholes etc. I found that the times on Google Maps, while unbelievable given the distance, are actually pretty accurate because they are just slow going in many places. I spent an incredible day riding around the island but really needed another day to actually see everything. A night or two on Nusa Penida in addition to Lembongan would be a great idea if you can spare it.

How long to stay on Nusa Lembongan?

Or to put it another way, how long is a piece of string?

You could spend a few days, or you could spend a couple of weeks, depending on how you like to spend your days and how much time you have.

We spent 4 days and I feel like that was enough to get a really good taste for life on the island. I wouldn’t want to spend any less time, especially considering the travel time. A week would have been comfortable and would have provided ample time to relax by the pool, as well as find enough time to explore all 3 islands.

Honestly, if you have a good book, like cheap food, cheap accommodation, friendly locals (i.e. the non-hassling type), and beautiful islands to explore, there is no maximum. But 4 days would be my absolute minimum.

How to get around Nusa Lembongan

There are two types of vehicles that frequent the roads of Nusa Lembongan: scooters and trucks with seats in the tray. The trucks largely carry the tourists, and the scooters everyone else (including the game tourists). Both are really easy to come by. In Bali, everyone knows a guy who drives or does tours. Some people are less official than others, but they all want to make some rupiah, so they’ll fulfil a duty and be on time.

For this reason, your accommodation will be able to organise transport really easily and really cheaply. We did a few tours and for everything, I booked through the accommodation. I also hired a scooter and this was a great way to see the island at my own pace, without needing to be reliant on others all the time. The scooter cost 7000 rp (~$7/day) and they didn’t need it to be filled afterwards. If you do need to fill it up though, just drive by the local petrol station:

Lastly, many food places will offer to pick you up and drop you back at your accommodation if you dine there. Since everything is pretty close, but not close enough to walk, they can do this very cheaply. We did this every night and was very convenient. If you don’t hire a scooter and aren’t within walking distance to restaurants, this does limit your options.

My biggest tip is to take advantage of Google Maps’ offline download feature. This means you can have the map saved on your phone and can still use the GPS with the phone in airplane mode. This uses zero data and was incredibly helpful in navigating.

Where to eat and drink on Nusa Lembongan

Food on Nusa Lembongan ranges from open-air warungs run by local families, to the swanky beach clubs owned and run by foreigners. The prices vary accordingly.

This was right around the corner from our villa and we ate there for breakfast twice. I loved their pineapple or banana pancakes and the omelettes. The coffee is good and everything is dirt cheap. We fed 5 people with coffees for around 350k (~AUD$35).

Nick’s Place

As you drive past Nick’s Place along the road between Jungut Batu and Lembongan villages, the sign reads “Coffee and Ribs”. Not the combination you’d expect, but it’s accurate. I live by the phrase “When in Rome”, so by that rule I had to order the ribs. The chef cooked them on the grill to the side of the restaurant and they were absolutely beautiful. Give them a ring and they’ll pick you up and drop you back from anywhere on the island.

The Beach Club @ Sandy Bay

Another of the more swanky options with quality food and a strong western persuasion, although everything here was a little slow. The beach club extends out onto the sand and is one of the best places to watch the sun go down. Sandy Bay will be happy to pick you up and drop off afterwards.

Overlooking the clear waters of Jungut Batu Beach, The Deck serves quality western food for breakfast lunch and dinner, in addition to a long list of cocktails.

Bali Hai Bar and Grill

Located on beautiful Mushroom Beach Bali Hai is a resort restaurant so is a little more pricey, but the food was wonderful. I ordered the Beef Rendang with a generous potato cake and a papaya/mango juice. All this was served under a giant bamboo structure with high ceilings and clever light fittings, giving a distinct timber atmosphere and orange hue to the air. The main draw is the sunsets. Being on the western side, the sunset was magnificent. Bali Hai will also pick up and drop off if you give them a ring.

B’Fresh is a warung in the heart of Jungut Batu village, one street back from the beach. It is currently rated #1 on TripAdvisor. The breakfast food and coffee were both very good, but the best restaurant on Lembongan is probably a stretch.

Panorama Bar and Restaurant

This restaurant is one that pops up on a lot of lists for Lembongan because of the view, but if you’re expecting a world-class meal, well, I think you’re on the wrong island for starters. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed my Mahi Mahi, and my large Bintang really hit the spot. It’s a classic warung with its open walled dining with a simple and cheap, but delicious menu.

If you are considering a trip to Bali, and you don’t want to have to deal with pushy locals, noisy taxis and an excess of western food options, then Nusa Lembongan should be first on your list. We had such a fantastic time on the island and are already planning our next trip.

Absolutely, Lembongan is only a 45 minute boat ride away and you could get away with 4 days on the island, leaving plenty of time to enjoy Bali as well. Of course, there’s so much to see on Bali as it is so you’d probably still need to come back to see it all either way :)

The Devils Tear is a marvelous sight, can’t stress enough how amazing it looks. Also, surfing is a skill I really want to learn and get into – I spend enough time on the water so why not? A-star travel guide.

Comparing islands: Which is more appealing, Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Ceningan?

The Ultimate Guide to Nusa Lembongan – Things to Do, Getting There + More

Nusa Lembongan is like a vacation from a vacation – where mainland Bali is becoming more and more overrun by tourists these days, Nusa Lembongan still holding on to it’s low key island vibes. Ultimately, it’s a very chilled-out place that offers a decent selection of activities to those who make it here.

There are plenty of things to do on Nusa Lembogan from surfing to diving to just hanging out at one of the many beach bars. Most itineraries for Nusa Lembongan include at least one of these. When you’ve finished doing all of these, there’s still plenty more to do.

I’ll also share with you some of my favorite restaurants and bars on the island, which, if we’re being honest, is my favorite part of the place.

Where to Stay in Nusa Lembongan

There are a lot of lodges and hotels on Nusa Lembongan these days and in all sorts of varieties. We’re talking beach bungalows, upscale resorts, local homestays, hostels, whatever; you name it, Nusa Lembongan has it.

When it comes to accommodation price on Nusa Lembongan, I’d say that prices are slightly higher here than on the mainland area of Bali . That being said, most places are not prohibitively expensive. This is still Bali after all – it’s still famous for offering some of the best deals on the most epic villas!

Lembongan Hostel – Best Hostel on Nusa Lembongan

Even though Lembongan Hostel is not located in Jungut Batu, it is still very near to some of the best landmarks and beaches on Nusa Lembongan. Dream Beach, Sandy Bay, and the Devil’s Tear are all very close and can be reached in a matter of minutes. The hostel itself is built in a traditional Balinese manner and the owners are quite welcoming.

Suba Homestay – Best Place to Party on Nusa Lembongan

Full disclaimer: this homestay is not a party hostel per say but it is located near to some decent bars on Nusa Lembongan. For those who like to go out after dark, this hostel is a convenient place to base yourself. Spend the night being merry and then crash at the pool the next day.

Nyuh Gading Homestay – Best Guesthouse on Nusa Lembongan

This homestay is a bit more expensive than some other accommodation on Nusa Lembongan but the extra price is worth it. At Nyuh Gading, you’ll be able to take advantage of a great pool area, private rooms, and a good social scene. It’s not the fanciest hotel on Nusa Lembongan but it’s pretty close.

The Best Places to Stay in Nusa Lembongan

Are you wondering  which is the best part of Nusa Lembongan to stay in?  Well, let me give you a few suggestions.

The island’s main hub, with a wide range of accommodations, water-based activities, restaurants, and active nightlife along the long and gorgeous beach.

Tamarind Beach

Between two main beaches, this area gives a perfect relaxing and calm environment to chill and enjoy a quiet beach. Perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and water activities.

Mushroom Bay

A great area with quiet beaches around and stunning sunsets. Affordable accommodation, and a peaceful and quiet vibe, with some restaurants and cafes around.

Dream Beach

Scenic and secluded shores with crystal-clear turquoise waters. Ideal for those seeking an intimate retreat away from crowded spots on the island.

Nusa Ceningan

The perfect area for tranquillity and out-of-the-grid travellers. Perfect to chill and connect with nature, and fewer tourists around.

How to Get to Nusa Lembongan

Most of the boats that leave from Bali to Nusa Lembongan depart from Sanur . There are lots of companies in Sanur that offer transfers and these usually have multiple departures each day. Between these, there’s a boat leaving about every 60 minutes.

If you’re making a day trip to Nusa Lembongan, know that the first departure usually leaves Sanur shortly after sunrise. The final return is usually shortly before sunset.

The boat from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan takes around 20-30 minutes and will drop you either at Mushroom Beach or Jungut Batu . You should double-check where your lodge is before booking your ticket and then choose the appropriate arrival point in order to avoid an unnecessarily long taxi ride.

Ticket prices range depending on the company and if you get a round trip ticket. The average price is around 200,000-250,000 rupiah for a one-way journey . Some companies will offer free-transfers with tickets and it goes without saying that these ferry tickets are usually more expensive.

On a side note, I was actually told by the owner of a guesthouse in Sanur that it’s a good idea to barter for tickets. Since most of the boats look to have set prices, I can’t imagine actually doing this (let it be known that I love to barter). But give it a shot if you want!

If you have a tight schedule consider booking your boat to Nusa Lembongan ahead of time. Use Direct Ferries to check for prices online and reserve a spot.

How to get around Nusa Lembongan

First off: Nusa Lembongan is a tiny island to visit when compared to traveling Bali . Exploring it shouldn’t be a problem at all, even for day trippers.

The question is: how to get around Nusa Lembongan?

There are a couple of ways:

• By private transport – A lot of people decide to hire a private driver for the day to shuttle them around and avoid stress. A smart idea although cars can’t go everywhere that scooters do. Drivers can be found for around $25/day.
• By taxi – Others opt to just pay as they go but this is only good if you’re going to a couple of attractions on Nusa Lembongan or Ceningan. For the prices they’ll be charging you, just get a private driver.
• By tour – There are a shit ton of locals offering islands tours of Nusa Lembongan; transport is obviously included in these.
• By renting a scooter – Renting scooter gives you the most freedom, costs the least amount of money, and will allow you to go most places. At the same time though, this is arguably the most dangerous way of getting around. You need to be cautious here.

Any way you choose to travel around Nusa Lembongan, you won’t have to worry too much about long distances. Again, Lembo and Nusa Ceningan are both really small and chances are you’ll be able to see both of them in a short amount of time.

Renting a Scooter on Nusa Lembongan

A lot of the natives have unofficial scooter-hire businesses and you can see their signs everywhere. If you see one, just walk up and start talking shop with them.

Most will try to rent a scooter to you starting at 100,000 rupiah per day but you should definitely barter with them. You can often get the price down to at least 70,000 , maybe even more if you’re renting for multiple days. I rented a scooter in Nusa Lembongan for 3 days at 50,000 per day, which was a good deal for all parties involved.

In regards to the roads, most are paved and are good quality. If you’re experienced with a motorbike, then the streets will be manageable for you. If this is your first time, you may want to practice a bit in an open field.

Always, ALWAYS be mindful of oncoming traffic when driving, especially around blind corners. Honk your horn when coming up on these to let people know you’re there. Helmets are also a smart idea though it seems half the people on this island don’t bother.

There are some dirt tracks around, primarily on Nusa Ceningan, and it goes without saying that you should be extra careful on these. Don’t gas it out or hit the breaks whilst turning too sharply on one of these – this is sure way to slide and eat shit.

Riding a scooter can be a great and inexpensive way of traveling around Nusa Lembongan. Although you don’t need a license to rent a scooter, most travel insurance companies will ask for a valid motorbike license to be able to claim if you crash! Always make sure that you have travel insurance with a motorcycle-riding coverage.

No island tour of Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan is complete without visiting these locations!

Jungut Batu

Jungut Batu is the main settlement on Nusa Lembongan and is generally where all the travelers hang out. As such, there is a good selection of lodges, restaurants, bars, yoga studios, surf schools, all those and then some located here.

Most people gravitate towards Jungut Batu Beach . Here, you’ll be able to find just about anything you could want, be it a cold coconut, Bintang, or surf lesson. My favorite stomping grounds ended up being right outside Ginger & Jamu where there were some nice beach chairs, right in front of Santosha Yoga Institute . Good times, folks.

Jungut Batu is just an easy place to be in. There are cafes everywhere, the town itself is tiny, and the beach is never too far away. If you just wanted to relax and do nothing, this is the place for that.

South of Jungut Batu Beach is Coconuts Beach (Resort), which is where a lot of surfers would cast off. North is Pasir Putih Beach – a decent stretch of sand that gets waaaayyy less visitors. The seafood restaurants around here are quite good.

Panorama Point

If you arrive at Mushroom Bay and then taxied to Jungut Batu, then you probably passed Panorama Point once already. It’s located between the two at the top of a hill and is probably the best view on Nusa Lembongan. From here, you can Jungut Batu, the bay, and Mt Agung, which dominates everything else.

The best time to visit Panorama Point is at sunrise before everyone else has woken up. The chances are generally greater too that you’ll get clear skies.

Visiting Panorama Point during the day can be a little frustrating because hawkers will often pester you. It’s more sad than annoying though sometimes, because the hawkers are children who looked forced to do the job.

There are a couple of restaurants at the point but I would worry too much at eating at them. There is a good cafe called Two Towers right around the corner though (LOTR reference FTW).

Mangrove Forest

The Mangrove Forest is on the northern end of Nusa Lembongan and I will admit that I didn’t actually go to it. Reasons being:

• You have to have a guide to go there.
• You can explore it only by boat.
• Once you’ve seen one mangrove forest in your life, the rest kinda look the same.

So I didn’t really feel an enormous desire to explore this particular patch of mangrove. Don’t get me wrong: it could be an amazing mangrove forest that’s hiding all kinds of cool and unique shit. I just didn’t feel like finding out at the time.

I did get a chance to look around the village at the mouth of the forest though and can say that it by itself is worth visiting. The village was essentially a collection of swampy bars and warungs and had a weird, almost Cajun-esque vibe to it. It just seemed weird and interesting and I would be very curious to hear if anyone felt the same way.

Mushroom Bay is where most people will arrive after they take the boat from Bali to Nusa Lembongan. It’s essentially just a port with a beach but there are enough bars and restaurants here to keep you entertained.

Near to Mushroom Bay is the oft-visited and hidden-away Tamarind Beach . This was formerly a private beach for a now defunct resort but is now open to the public. It’s small (really small) and there isn’t much room to explore. That being said, some of the best snorkeling on Nusa Lembongan is around Tamarind.

Staying in Mushroom Bay would be a quieter alternative to staying in Jungut Batu. There are plenty of chalets around Mushroom Bay, tucked away into little, quiet corners of the island.

Sandy Bay Beach Club

If you’re looking for somewhere to just lounge and have a drink, Sandy Bay Beach Club will probably appeal to you. Drop by here to grab a quick drink, eat some snacks, and laze a bit but don’t expect much more than that.

There is an actual beach here but the tides can be quite rough so people generally stick to the infinity pool. At sunset, said pool is usually full of loungers but the crowd is still nothing compared to some mega beach clubs back on Bali.

When you think about it, it’s actually kind of endearing how Sandy Bay Beach Club is able to exist without being over the top. I really like how humble this place is compared to some of the other places for nightlife in Bali , and that’s honestly why I keep going back.

Devil’s Tear

The Devil’s Tear : a place on Nusa Lembongan that is both loved and feared. People travel from all over Bali to see the mighty waves that break upon these rocks, and a lot of them are tragically swept out to sea.

The Devil’s Tear is essentially a portion of the coast that gets hit with a lot of big waves. During swells, the waves barrel into the rocks here, shooting up water and spray on impact. The sound alone from the crashing of them is deafening sometimes and can sound like thunderclaps.

Now, you’d think that with a name like “The Devil’s Tear,” most people would be a little cautious when they visit. Unfortunately, there are a lot of ding-bats who come here; Instagram fiends, daredevils, drunken holidayers, people who generally don’t exhibit a lot of awareness. They go to the edge of the rocks to strike a post and then get knocked on their ass (or worse) by a surprise wave.

Now I’m not saying you need to be a complete wet towel at the Devil’s Tear but just be really careful. Wear sturdy shoes , go with someone who can keep an eye on you and, as the expression goes, “never turn your back on the ocean.” Do these and you will get that epic photo without ending up like this girl.

Thanks to it’s perfect western-facing direction, Devil’s Tear is also a great place to watch the sunset. If the Devil’s Tear is just swarming with tourists, then consider heading up a bit to Sunset Point – it’s much more quiet and offers views that are just as good.

Dream Beach is on the other side of the Devil’s Tear and is a much more relaxing place to visit. There are no dramatic waves or jagged rocks here – just some cute chalets and a nice strip of sand to lounge on.

From both the parking lot and some parts of the Devil’s Tear, you get a pretty good view of the beach. There’s a swing (everyone’s favorite photo prop in Bali) here though I think it was broken when I visited.

The beach itself is intimate and not too hectic. In the morning, you may see some couples going for runs here or doing yoga. All-in-all, it’s one of the more peaceful beaches on Nusa Lembongan.

Yellow Bridge

The Yellow Bridge is a famous landmark on Nusa Lembongan that connects the island to Nusa Ceningan. The bridge itself is nothing special – it’s literally just a bridge that’s yellow – but is good for a photo op or two.

The water around the bridge is actually gorgeous and is an absolutely brilliant shade of blue. There are a couple of seaweed farms in the shallows here as well and you should spot the occasional farmer or two working.

On both sides of the bridge are some excellent restaurants. Nusa Ceningan actually has some of my favorite bars in the region and I would rather spend my time at these than at the ones in Jungut Batu. Definitely hit up local legend Sea Breeze while you’re here.

Blue Lagoon

For me, the Blue Lagoon is a bittersweet place to visit on Nusa Lembongan. Whilst the water here is undoubtedly some of the most beautiful I have ever seen, the overall scene is kinda tarnished by recent development.

When I visited the Blue Lagoon (May 2019), there was a big resort being built on top of the cliff and it was kind of an eye sore. Granted, the lagoon itself was untouched but it was still unfortunate.

If you’d like to get away from the construction site, you can walk around and the edges of the cliff to some more secluded spots. If you walk to the left, you’ll actually find one of the best cliff jumps on Nusa Ceningan! Just be mindful of the path and if the ocean is too rough to actually jump in.

Mahana Point

Going to Mahana Point is actually one of my favorite things to do on Nusa Ceningan for a couple of reasons:

• The beach here is never too crowded.
• The bar offers awesome views of big-wave surfers.
• More cliff jumping!

The beach itself is accessed via a small pathway to right (if you’re coming from the Blue Lagoon). You’ll know it immediately from all of the parked motorbikes.

If you wanted to get an alternative look at the beach and Mahana Point though, then there’s an abandoned bar/villa with some excellent views. Just go down the road next to Warung Nyoman and try to end up here.

The bar at Mahana Point is a great place to end the day. Here, you’ll have an awesome vantage point from which to see surfers, who are way closer to you then at Blue Point, and the sunset. There are two diving platforms at the bar as well but you have to pay to use them. Whether or not you’re willing to do so is up to you.

“The Old Tree” of Nusa Ceningan

I like this spot on Nusa Ceningan. I like this spot a lot. Partly because of the tree but mostly for the overall tranquility of the place.

The “ Old Tree of Nusa Ceningan ” generally refers to a small promontory on the far southwestern corner of the island. This little slice of land is gentle, grassy, and quite nice for just laying around on. One could easily doze off here as they lay down and listen to the waves lap against the cliffs.

The tree itself is a fairly small feature in the area and, honestly, I don’t even know where the actual “old tree” is. But that never really bothered me much – I just enjoy all of them.

The road to the Old Tree used to be a bit rough but it’s fully paved now. Getting here has never been easier.

The Rest of Nusa Ceningan

When I first took a tour of Nusa Ceningan in 2014, I was unable to explore the eastern portion of the island. And that really bothered me. For the next 5 years, I would think about what treasures that side of the island could possibly be hiding and couldn’t wait to get back…

Well, I finally returned to this part of the island in 2019 and can only say that I got myself amped up for no reason.

The eastern side of Nusa Ceningan is pretty fuckin’ empty. The only things that you’ll find here are broken roads, empty villas, and dead end drives. You can certainly dedicate an hour of your Nusa Ceningan itinerary to seeing this part of the island but anything more may be a waste.

Here are a couple of points of interest on this part of Nusa Ceningan:

• Secret Beach – A small strip of sand owned by local Villa Travelly. Nice but not great. The pool is probably the more popular place to hang out.
• Ceningan Cliffs – A restaurant with a pretty good view of the water and Nusa Penida. Would be a nice, quiet escape for the day if needed.
• Old villas – I’m not going to tell you where but there are some abandoned resorts in the hills of Ceningan that actually have amazing views. Sneaking into one for sunset beers was an idea we batted around for some time.
• Bias Munjul – Sometimes, Google’s suggestions for things to do on Nusa Ceningan are NOT always right…

1. Go surfing in Nusa Lembongan

Lembongan actually has some really good surf spots, which may or may not be news to you. If you want to get away from mad Uluwatu or Kuta, then try hitting the waves here.

2. Go cliff jumping on Nusa Ceningan

A day trip to Nusa Ceningan is worthwhile just to go cliff jumping! There are so many hidden spots around here that are just ripe for a good leap. See if you can find a new one!

3. Eat the best seafood in Bali

If you’re stranded on an island, there’s really only one choice of food: seafood. The restaurants on Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan serve fresh fish everyday and is seriously some of the best in Bali.

4. Catch the sunrise at Panorama Point

It’s one of the best views on the island as you can see everything from Jungut Batu to Mt Agung. If you can wake up early, you will be well rewarded at this viewpoint.

5. See the power of the Devil’s Tear

The Devil’s Tear is probably the most infamous attraction on Nusa Lembongan. The waves are absolutely epic here and have even been known to drag people out to see. Visit to feel the power but always remember to show the ocean respect.

6. Grab a sundowner on Jungut Batu Beach

At sunset, everyone heads to the beach drink a beer and watch the sun dip below the horizon. Local beach bars set up fire pits, put on their most chilled music, and really know how to set the mood. Grab and drink and reflect on your day.

7. Practice or learn yoga at Santosha Yoga Institute

There are few places more appropriate for gaining some spiritual enlightenment than Santosha Yoga Institute . Situated right on the beach and above Ginger & Jamu, you can take shorter classes or longer certification courses. Either way, it’s a great idea to drop by.

8. Explore Nusa Ceningan by motorbike

Touring Nusa Ceningan (and Lembongan, for that matter) is best enjoyed on 120cc motorbike. You’ll get to go wherever you want be it a beach, a cafe, or just a secret that only you know about (please do share).

9. Go diving with mantas

This really is one of the coolest things to do in Bali, not just in Lembo or Penida. Swimming with mantas is a humbling experience as these giants glide through the water and make you feel pitifully small.

If you simply want to go snorkeling around Nusa Lembongan, there are plenty more options available as well.

10. Get some work done at Bali Eco Deli

There’s not a lot of good WiFi on Nusa Lembongan. BUT I can personally attest that the connection at Bali Eco Deli is very good, maybe the best on the island. The food and coffee is also quite nice so have a snack while you’re at it.

When to Travel to Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan’s weather is pretty much the exact same as mainland Bali – hot and rainy in the summer, mild and dry in the winter. Temperatures are pretty consistent throughout the entire year and hover around 85 Fahrenheit (30 Celsius) or so. Summers can feel extra-warm thanks to the increased humidity.

The high season coincides with the winter season as this is by far the most pleasant (and safest time) to visit. During winter, Nusa Lembongan’s hotels and guest houses will be more expensive and somewhat less available. That being said, there seems to be no shortage of rooms from what I saw.

Winter is also the best time to go diving around Bali . Manta Rays are most easily seen in the early winter months while the infamous Mola Mola are most often spotted in late-winter. Summer months can be problematic because of storms and poor visibility but you can still go diving if given the proper window.

Summer can be a good time to visit Nusa Lembongan if you don’t mind a little rain and have patience. Road conditions can deteriorate in heavy rain and the ferries from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan can be canceled if there’s a large storm. If you’re indeed stuck, I suggest grabbing a cocktail and watching the epic thunderstorms – they can be mesmerizingly powerful.

Nusa Lembongan Essentials

Make sure you bring these important items with you when you head to Nusa Lembongan!

• Waterbottle – Reduce your plastic footprint and bring your own water bottle with you. Bali is currently in the midst of an environmental crisis and it’s only getting worse as more people visit here. Be a part of solution.
• Adapter – How annoying is it when you pack all of your electronics and then can’t plug them in to charge?! Avoid this common oversight and remember to bring a power adapter with you.
• Imodium – Bali belly doesn’t affect everyone but if and when you do catch it, you’d better be prepared for a rough night. It may not be a cure, but Imodium is one of the best ways to help remedy an upset stomach.
• Waterproof Phone Case – These are great for not only keeping water out, but sand and other pieces of grit. These are super helpful when you’re at the beach or out playing on the boat.
• First Aid Kit – You never what could happen in Bali. You could fall off your motorbike, cut up your leg on some coral, all that and then some. Make sure you have a first aid kit in case of emergency – it’s one of the most items you could possible pack.

Diving around Nusa Lembongan

Though Nusa Penida usually gets the spotlight, there is still some very good diving around Nusa Lembongan. The water is warm, visibility is crystal-clear sometimes, and the marine life is spectacular in places . Reef sharks, barracuda, groupers, parrotfish, and turtles are all commonly seen around Lembo. Even the occasional whale shark has been known to show up.

The primary draw for divers at Nusa Lembongan is the chance to see manta rays and the mysterious mola mola . These fish are generally seen around Nusa Penida though and most dive operators will end up taking you there. The winter months are the best time to spot these leviathans.

In the literal vicinity of Nusa Lembongan, there are a couple of good dive sites. The most notable is called the Blue Corner and it is reportedly one of the best dive sites in all Bali . S.D. Point and Pura Red are two more dive sites nearby and are supposed to be quite easy to drift around.

Diving at Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida can be quite dangerous due to very strong currents. If you’re a beginner diver, you probably stick to the Lembongan dive sites. Go diving at Penida only if you feel confident.

Surfing at Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan

There is actually some solid surfing at Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Whilst the beaches in Uluwatu and Kuta get all of the attention, the waves here are less well-known but arguably just as good.

The best places to going surfing are in Jungut Batu Bay at Nusa Lembongan and Mahana Point at Nusa Ceningan.

Jungut Batu Bay has three different surfing spots:

• Playgrounds – the easiest break, both to get to and ride. Simply grab a board, head to Coconuts Beach (Coconuts Resort), and start paddling. Breaks both ways and gets different-sized waves.
• Lacerations – Named for the shallow reef that can really cut you up if you fall. Great left-handers and barrels. Waves can get big too. Crowds can also be a problem sometimes.
• Shipwreck’s – During the right swell, the best waves in the area. Further out in the bay as well, which means fewer crowds and the need for a boat.

Nusa Ceningan’s only surf spot is Mahana Point and it’s a gem. There are some real BBWs here (big beautiful waves) and most of the time you’ll only see pros attempting these.

If you’d like to just chill, the bar at Mahana Point is literally right above the surf. You’ll get better views here than at Blue Point in Uluwatu and, on the right day, semi-tolerable house music.

If you do plan on surfing in Nusa Lembongan, it is highly recommended to wear a wet suit to protect you from coral. There’s a lot of it around the island plus some remnants of defunct seaweed farms, which means odd bits of metal.

Restaurants and Nightlife in Nusa Lembongan

Hanging out at the many cafes and bars is actually one of my favorite things to do on Nusa Lembongan. The selection on the island is actually quite diverse. There are beach shacks, organic cafes, seafood restaurants, boutiques eateries, local warungs , and lots more; all have really great vibes.

The top restaurants in Nusa Lembongan are in Jungut Batu. Ginger & Jamu is hands-down one of the best places to go as everything they have is delicious. Kayu is a newcomer to the island but makes a pretty bomb brekky. For some local fair, visit Nida’s Warung , hidden away in an alley behind Ohana’s.

Aside from the usual Indonesian/Balinese affair, seafood reigns supreme here. For around $7-$8, you can have amazing fresh fish, which to me is an instant win. Lemongrass gets a lot of attention though I find it overrated. For the best seafood restaurants on Lembongan, visit the northern part of the village around Pantai Mahagiri .

If you want to mix things up, I highly recommend hitting up the joints around the Yellow Bridge . On the Ceningan side, you’ll find local-legend Sea Breeze , complete with those stereotypical sea swings and hammocks. On the Lembongan side, I seriously had one of the best tuna steaks of my life Sunday Beach .

For those digital nomads who need to do some work, the best WiFi is at Bali Eco Deli . They also have a proper espresso machine here to get you going.

In terms of nightlife on Nusa Lembongan, there isn’t a whole lot going on. Most people end their day drinking beers at one of the many beach bars, but it’s a far cry from Legian or Seminyak. Visit Coconut Hut if you feel like dancing.

ATMs on Nusa Lembongan

There are a couple of ATMs on Nusa Lembongan that work regularly. There’s a BNI at Jungut Batu Harbor that I regularly used and was never out of order. Another is over near Mushroom Beach.

But even though both appeared to be flush with bills, I would recommend bringing the bulk of your cash to the island with you. If said ATMs were to break or run out of cash, then you’d kind of be forced to head back to the mainland to get cash, which is just inconvenient.

Also, I always suggest bringing a stash of US dollars, pounds, or euros with you. If you are in a pinch, you can change them at local currency exchange and some local businesses will even take them. Just make sure you keep your cash in a safe place.

Nusa Lembongan Day Trip or Overnight?

A day trip to Nusa Lembongan is certainly possible as it – plus Nusa Ceningan – are small enough to see in a short amount of time. In 8 hours, you could totally see all of Nusa Lembongan’s attractions, like the Devil’s Tear and Blue Lagoon, and still have time to grab a drink before traveling back to Bali.

But these islands are pretty lax and both could certainly be enjoyed over the course of several days. With more time, you could go surfing, diving, and, crucially, spend more time at the awesome beach bars on Nusa Lembongan.

In the end, it’s all a matter of preference. Would you rather spend your time on mainland Bali or on a smaller, chiller island?

To help through these decisions, here are some reasons to visit Nusa Lembongan on a day trip or for several days:

Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Ceningan Day Trip

• Islands are compact enough to see in a half-day.
• Plentiful ferry options for arriving at the islands.
• Easy to rent a scooter/private driver.
• Nice break from hectic Bali beaches.

Staying in Lembongan and Ceningan for Several Days

• Often described as Bali 30 years ago.
• Great food and lax bars on Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan.
• Time to go surfing and diving.
• Chance to take a day trip to Nusa Penida.

Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida?

Right off the bat, I’m going to say that if you have the chance to visit Nusa Penida , DO IT! Nusa Penida is hands-down my favorite spot in Bali and probably my top destination in Indonesia overall. The beaches here are ridiculously gorgeous and the scenery is beyond words.

There are a decent amount of hotels on Nusa Penida but the island is so much bigger than Lembo that they can be really far apart. Unless you’re okay with sleeping in a local guesthouse, you’ll need to stick to the more developed north shore. This can be inconvenient because the best places on Nusa Penida are in the south.

Furthermore, Nusa Penida does have a reputation for being pretty rough around the edges. The roads can be horrendous, the safety standards are not totally up to par in some places, and there’s not a whole lot to do if you don’t care about scenery. Many people decide not to deal with these shortcomings and just decide to do a day trip to Nusa Penida instead.

Nusa Lembongan is smaller, more accessible, has better restaurants and bars, and is generally the more convenient island. If you’re a surfer, Lembongan is definitely the better choice.

Ultimately, Nusa Lembongan is not (nearly) as beautiful as Nusa Penida but it is easier to enjoy. If you did want to get a taste of Nusa Penida, day tours are leaving all the time from Lembo. You just have to be willing to share all those stunning locations with the hordes of other day trippers.

How to be a Respectful Backpacker in Nusa Lembongan

The Balinese have to deal with a lot of shit from horrible backpackers: half-naked photo shoots in front of temples, shit-faced groups wandering into the rice paddies. This kind of behavior reflects poorly on travelers and isn’t anywhere near the best way to experience Bali.

Get Insured Before Traveling to Nusa Lembongan

The first thing that most Balinese people say to is “hello;” the last thing that they say is usually “be careful.”

Bali is a safe destination , but accidents do happen all the time. Whether it’s a scooter crash , complications from diving, or a case of Bali belly, there are lots of ways that your trip can be derailed.

Traveling without insurance would be risky so do consider getting good backpacker insurance sorted before you head off on an adventure.

Before I sign off here, I would like to remind everyone visiting Bali to be very careful when it comes to drinking . There is a lot of bootleg alcohol on the island – mixed sometimes with dangerous amounts of methanol – and you DO NOT want to drink the wrong batch.

Buy liquor from trusted vendors and don’t accept drinks from random dudes. Go to legit bars in Nusa Lembongan and not to roadside shacks. Sticking to bottled Bintang beer is a sure way to avoid this shit as well.

A very special piece of paradise! Excellent accommodation by the pool. The staff were excellent - nothing was too hard. The accommodation package included hotel transfers, and excellent and very generous daily breakfast and boat to the island as well as many activities such as the pontoon, beach snorkeling, canoes and SUP equipment. Great value and a good introduction to the island and its surrounds. We also chose to do additional water activities which were very easy to organise and the dive centre staff in particular were excellent with the kids. Good location for the beach but also access to some other restaurants, shops etc. We will definitely be back to this special little piece of paradise.

Paradise found. I stayed in a lumbung right on the beach and had one of the most relaxing and idyllic 4 days of my life. At night in a comfy air conditioned room the lapping of the ocean guarantees a great night’s sleep and in the morning you jump into a pristine sea at the foot of your staircase or one of the resort’s great pools. The ever helpful staff never stop smiling and the food in both restaurants is excellent.
