A video shared online shows Royal Caribbean 's Harmony of the Seas, the world's largest cruise liner , crashing into a pier in Jamaica as it attempted to dock last Thursday (May 26).

RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com confirmed the accident took place as the vessel was backing into its assigned spot on a dock in Falmouth, Jamaica and struck a concrete mooring pylon at around 7:00 a.m. local time.

Zero injuries were reported to passengers and crew members during the crash, which "caused mostly cosmetic damage" to the ship, "including dents and paint scrapes," according to the blog post.

“There were no injuries to guests or crew and only minor cosmetic damage to the ship’s stern. The sailing will continue as scheduled,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement in response to the crash via the blog post.

Jamaican tourism minister Edmund Bartlett told the Jamaica-Gleaner that the crash was caused by an error made by the cruise's harbor pilot while steering the ship.

“The good news is that nobody got hurt and the damage was minimal to the vessel and it was able to continue its journey unfazed and really unaffected,” Bartlett said.

Bartlett confirmed the port also sustained some damage in relation to the crash.

“We are repairing the damaged areas at the port now," Barlett said via the Jamaica-Gleaner . "The divers are there now recovering the broken elements and we should be back in full order for the ships that come next week.”

Passengers aboard Royal Caribbean ’s The Harmony of the Seas could be heard screaming as the 1,188-foot ship crashed into a pier in Jamaica .

The incident happened on Thursday when the cruise liner docked at Falmouth, a busy port on the country’s northern shore, at about 7am.

Several bits of port infrastructure were damaged in the collision, including a pier structure which was crushed by the 227,000 tonne vessel. An investigation is underway.

Passengers could be heard screaming as the ship drifted towards the port and crashed into a pier, where it was trying to dock.

“Oh my God”, one woman could be heard crying out in a video of the crash which has attracted more than 500,000 views on social media. Another passenger was heard yelling “Holy s***”.

Despite the terror felt by those aboard the Harmony, there were reportedly no injuries – although the vessel did sustain “cosmetic” damage during the collision, Royal Caribbean said in a statement to RoyalCaribbean.com .

The ship’s operator said the Harmony, a 6,687-passenger vessel which was launched in 2016, was able to continue its cruise without issue.

Jamaica’s tourism minister meanwhile told reporters that Falmouth’s port would need some repairs and would be operational this week.

“We are repairing the damaged areas at the port now,” the minister,  Edmund Bartlett, was reported by RoyalCaribbean.com as saying. “The divers are there now recovering the broken elements and we should be back in full order for the ships that come next week.”

The crash has been blamed on the harbour pilot’s “error”, with the captain of the Harmony allegedly misdirected by the harbour pilot, reports said.

The Port Authority of Jamaica said in a statement of its own on Friday that an investigation involving Royal Caribbean would be carried out and that damage to infrastructure was being assessed.

Royal Caribbean told The Independent: “During arrival in Falmouth, Jamaica,  Harmony of the Seas  made contact with an extension part of the dock. There were no injuries to guests or crew and only minor cosmetic damage to the ship’s stern. The sailing continued as scheduled.”

Port Canaveral-based Royal Caribbean cruise ship hits dock in Jamaica

cruise ship hits dock 2022

Royal Caribbean International's massive Harmony of the Seas cruise ship hit a dock extension while entering the port of Falmouth, Jamaica, on Thursday.

The cruise line said damage to the ship was minor, and it would not affect the current sailing.

The ship was on a seven-night cruise from Port Canaveral, where it is based.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean said: "During arrival in Falmouth, Jamaica, Harmony of the Seas made contact with an extension part of the dock. There were no injuries to guests or crew, and only minor cosmetic damage to the ship’s stern. The sailing will continue as scheduled."

Carnival cruise canceled: Carnival cancels Saturday's sailing from Port Canaveral on Freedom after ship fire in Grand Turk

This was the one of two incidents involving a Port Canaveral-based cruise ship to occur on Thursday.

Carnival Cruise Line late Thursday canceled a scheduled Saturday sailing of the Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral, after the ship sustained fire damage during a port-of-call stop earlier that day in Grand Turk. On Friday, Carnival also canceled a four-night Freedom cruise scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on June 2 and a five-night cruise scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on June 6.

The fire occurred in the ship's funnel, and Carnival is bringing the ship to a shipyard in Grand Bahama for repairs.

The "Oasis-class" Harmony of the Seas ranks as the world's third-largest cruise ship, based on its weight of 226,963 gross tons. The ship has 2,747 staterooms, a capacity of 6,687 passengers and a crew of 2,200.

The ship left Port Canaveral on Sunday with about 5,300 passengers on a seven-night cruise. It docked at Coco Cay in the Bahamas on Monday; Nassau, Bahamas, on Tuesday; Falmouth on Thursday; and Labadee, Haiti, on Friday. It is due back in Port Canaveral on Sunday.

In January, the Harmony of the Seas entered a space launch "exclusion zone" when leaving Port Canaveral, forcing SpaceX to scrub a Falcon 9 rocket launch. Launch hazard areas, also known as exclusion zones and keep-out zones, are areas of the Atlantic Ocean closed to maritime traffic during rocket launches. Their borders are defined primarily by the rocket's trajectory and payload.

On Thursday (May 26) Royal Caribbean ’s Harmony of the Seas  crashed into a dock  in Falmouth, Jamaica. The captain of the Harmony of the Seas was piloting the ship into the port but got too close to a docks dolphin extension. This is used to moor ships once they dock.

Here is a video capturing the collision  which was posted on Twitter. As the massive 1,200-foot ship approaches the concrete mooring pylon, passengers begin to realize a collision is imminent.

A passenger can be heard yelling, “We’re gonna hit. We’re gonna hit,” just before the ship rams into the pylon, smashing the metal bridges connecting it to the dock.

Royal Caribbean released a statement on the incident:

(Warning: Adult language).

Luckily incidents like this are very rare and often only cause property damages to the piers. Often these are the result of very heavy winds or technical difficulties onboard the ships . Each incident is investigated thoroughly as the pier damages have been in the millions.

Watch: Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Crashes Into Dock Due To Pilot Error

  • The Harmony of the Seas crashed into a dock in Falmouth, Jamaica, because the pilot was badly directed at the time
  • It suffered "cosmetic damage," but no guests or crew members on board the vessel were injured
  • The damage to the port, which did not disrupt cruise shipping operations or schedules, is now being repaired

Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas cruise ship crashed into a dock in northwest Jamaica last week due to pilot error, Jamaican officials said.

The incident, which saw the Harmony of the Seas' aft colliding with a concrete mooring pylon at a dock in Falmouth as the vessel was backing into its assigned berth at around 7 a.m. Thursday, happened because the pilot was badly directed at the time, newspaper Jamaica Gleaner reported, citing the country's Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett.

The affected mooring pylon collapsed into the water as a result of the crash.

Meanwhile, the Oasis-class Harmony of the Seas suffered "cosmetic damage" to its stern, Royal Caribbean told News 6 in a statement.

No guests or crew members on board the vessel were injured, the company said.

The Harmony of the Seas was inspected and repaired within hours of the incident. Passengers were even able to disembark the vessel and carry out their scheduled activities after the cruise ship was moored "without delay," the Port Authority of Jamaica said Friday.

"The good news is that nobody got hurt and the damage was minimal to the vessel and it was able to continue its journey unfazed and really unaffected," Bartlett said.

Jamaican authorities are now repairing the damage caused to the dock, which they said did not disrupt cruise shipping operations or schedules.

"We are repairing the damaged areas at the port now. The divers are there now recovering the broken elements and we should be back in full order for the ships that come next week," Bartlett said.

Despite what happened at Falmouth, the Harmony of the Seas was able to follow the planned schedule for its seven-night western Caribbean itinerary.

The ship, which carried more than 7,000 passengers at the time of the crash, was set to return to Port Canaveral in Florida Sunday after visiting Royal Caribbean's private destination in Labadee, Haiti.

Another Royal Caribbean cruise ship, the Radiance of the Seas, went through a similar experience earlier this month when it struck a dock structure at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal in Alaska.

Rogue Wave Strikes Cruise Ship, Killing a Passenger and Injuring 4 Others

The passengers were hurt after a large, unpredictable wave hit the ship, which was traveling toward the Antarctic, Viking Cruises said.

By Amanda Holpuch

A passenger died and four others were injured after a large, unexpected wave hit a cruise ship traveling toward a popular launching point for expeditions to Antarctica, Viking Cruises said.

The ship, the Viking Polaris, was struck by a “rogue wave” on Tuesday at 10:40 p.m. local time while traveling toward Ushuaia, Argentina, which is on the southern tip of South America, Viking Cruises said in a statement .

Viking Cruises did not say how the passenger was killed or provide the passenger’s name. The four passengers who were injured were treated by onboard medical staff and had non-life-threatening injuries, Viking Cruises said.

A State Department official said that a U.S. citizen died and that the department was offering consular assistance to the person’s family.

Rogue waves are unpredictable, typically twice the size of surrounding waves and often come from a different direction than the surrounding wind and waves, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . Scientists are still trying to figure out how and when these uncommon waves form.

Ann Mah, of Topeka, Kan., told the news station WIBW that she and her husband were on the ship when it was hit by the wave and that it was “just like your whole house got shook really hard.”

“I mean, it was just a thud,” Ms. Mah said.

The Viking Polaris was launched this year and was designed for travel to remote destinations such as the Antarctic Peninsula. The ship is 665 feet long and can carry 378 passengers and 256 crew members.

The ship sustained “limited damage” from the wave and arrived in Ushuaia the day after it was struck, Viking Cruises said.

The cruise company canceled the Viking Polaris’s next scheduled trip, a 13-day cruise to the Antarctic Peninsula.

“We are investigating the facts surrounding this incident and will offer our support to the relevant authorities,” the company said.

Tourism to the Antarctic has steadily increased in the last 30 years, with 74,401 people traveling there in the 2019-20 season, according to the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators. Roughly 6,700 people traveled there in the 1992-93 season, according to the association.

In recent years, some observers have warned that the increase in tourism may not be sustainable and that it could threaten visitor safety or disrupt the fragile environment, which is already straining under the effects of climate change.

It is the beginning of the Antarctic tourism season, which coincides with its summer, beginning in late October or early November and usually lasting until March.

The death on the Viking Cruises ship this week comes after the death of two other cruise ship passengers in the Antarctic last month. Two Quark Expeditions cruise ship passengers died after one of the ship’s heavy duty inflatable Zodiac boats overturned near shore, Seatrade Cruise News reported .

Damage from ice is 'extraordinarily rare': What happens after a cruise ship hits an iceberg

cruise ship hits dock 2022

A Norwegian Cruise Line ship that hit a small iceberg last month will return to service this week, the cruise line said Monday.

The vessel "made contact with ice" while on its way to Hubbard Glacier in Alaska on June 25, resulting in multiple trip cancellations, though there were no injuries, a spokesperson for the cruise line told USA TODAY by email Monday. The ship will sail again Thursday.

The incident may raise questions about what exactly occurs  after a ship hits an iceberg. But Ross Klein, a cruise industry expert and a professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland, told USA TODAY that it "really depends on where the iceberg hits the ship and what kind of damage it may have done."

Norwegian ends pre-cruise COVID testing: The cruise line changes policy where local rules allow

Solo cruise: What it's like to go on a cruise by yourself

What happens after a cruise ship hits an iceberg?

Norwegian made several itinerary changes for the Sun after it hit the iceberg.

"The ship sailed to Juneau, Alaska for further assessment, where it was decided that the current voyage would be shortened, and the cruise scheduled to embark on June 30, 2022, would be canceled, so that the necessary repairs can be made," the Norwegian spokesperson said. The cruise line also canceled a voyage that was set to embark July 5.

"We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and are communicating with all impacted guests directly," the spokesperson added.

Klein said those kinds of itinerary changes are to be expected when there is damage to a ship. He said that if the ice damages the ship's propulsion system, that "creates a larger problem than a dent in the side."

Klein added that the speed a ship is going plays a role in what kind of damage it sustains. When a ship has been damaged, he said, the U.S. Coast Guard must also inspect and clear it.

Where are cruise ships repaired?

After a ship hits an iceberg, Klein said, where the cruise line takes it for repairs depends in part on where it is sailing.

Victoria, British Columbia, for instance, has a shipyard dry dock frequently used by cruise lines, he said: "They're located (in) different places, and part of it depends on whether there's space available, but then the other part is related to its proximity to where the ship is."

Is the cruise industry coming back?: After more than 2 years under a COVID cloud, the answer is yes.

'More than I hoped for': This is what it's like cruising with a disability right now

How often do cruise ships hit icebergs?

While ships might regularly make contact with ice, it's unusual for it to be an issue. Stewart Chiron, a cruise industry expert known as The Cruise Guy,  told USA TODAY last month that the incident was "extraordinarily rare," as cruise ships are extremely careful to avoid icebergs.

Chiron said it's common for ice to fall from glaciers and float in the water, but that it is unusual for a cruise line to change its itinerary after making contact with those pieces.

"Sometimes, they bump them, and you know, no big deal," Chiron said.

Klein echoed that.

"I think it's not uncommon for ships to interact with ice," he said. "What's unusual is for the ship to actually be physically damaged by the ice."

But, he said, given the infrequency of these events, passengers looking to take a cruise should not worry.

Damaged mooring dolphin leaves cruise ship terminal at half capacity

Posted by Tash Kimmell | May 12, 2022

The newly expanded Sitka Sound Cruise Ship terminal welcomed its first seven sailings last week, commencing what’s expected to be a record breaking year in cruise travel. While a majority of dockings went without a hitch, the terminal sustained damage to its inside berth on Monday (5-9-22), after a cruise ship struck an outer mooring dolphin.

A mooring dolphin is an off-shore steel structure that large boats can tie up to. In an interview with KCAW on Wednesday (5-11-22) owner and terminal manger, Chris McGraw says the 2100 passenger Radiance of the Seas hit the dolphin, damaging all four pilings, while backing into its berth Monday morning. The damage to the inside berth means the dock can no longer safely accommodate two ships, effectively cutting the dock’s capacity in half. McGraw says they’re currently working to notify incoming cruise lines. McGraw says the damage will affect future dates where two ships were scheduled.

While it’s still unclear exactly what the damage means for future cruise dates, McGraw says tendering passengers directly into town is a possibility in the meantime. McGraw says, some ships this year have already begun doing this when the dock is full.

A contractor from Anchorage based construction company Turnagain Marine will begin repairing the damaged dolphin over the weekend. McGraw says the timeline on repairs is unclear, but it could be anywhere from weeks to months before the berth is functional again.

“Right now, it’s a lot of unknown. We’re going to try to figure out schedule changes and repairs. Who pays for it? You know, all of that is in process,” said McGraw.

Despite damaging the berth, the ship was left unscathed. McGraw says they successfully had 4000 passengers move through the facility on Monday, and the ship was able to moor and leave safely.

Carnival Cruise ship catches fire after possible lightning strike

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – The Carnival Freedom ship caught fire Saturday near the Bahamas after passengers reported a lightning strike on the boat during a thunderstorm .

Carnival Cruise Line said the crew reported a fire on the port side of the ship's exhaust funnel around 3:15 p.m. Saturday. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas, sailing to Freeport after being unable to dock at Princess Cay due to weather conditions.

"Our onboard team acted quickly to contain and put out the fire," Carnival Cruise Line said. "While we continue to investigate multiple eyewitness reports of a lightning strike, our technical team completed a thorough assessment during the ship’s visit to Freeport on Sunday."

LIGHTNING FATALITIES WERE SECOND LOWEST ON RECORD IN 2023, SAFETY COUNCIL SAYS

Around the time of the fire, radar showed a storm cell over the area and a lot of lightning activity.

Multiple passenger videos show flames and dark smoke billowing from the exhaust funnel as rain continues to pour onto the deck.

Passenger Heath Barnes said the ship was supposed to dock at Princess Cay on Saturday about 9 a.m., but passengers were told that the boat would continue to Freeport due to strong winds .

During the afternoon, the rain returned, and passengers reported hearing loud thunder and then seeing the smoke. Soon after, guests were told to remain in their cabins.

"Why is our tail on fire?" someone can be heard saying in the video recorded by Barnes. "That's not good, y'all."

On Monday, Carnival Freedom returned to Port Canaveral , where guests disembarked.

The cruise line said damage to the ship is "more than we first thought" and will require immediate repair to stabilize the funnel. Cruises scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on March 25th and March 29th have been canceled. All guests on the canceled trips will receive a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit.

FOX Business reported that the same cruise ship caught on fire in 2022 after being struck by lightning.

Another video recorded on Saturday by X user @breezebreeze showed the fire on the ship.

"Carnival Freedom on fire AGAIN!!" they wrote on X.

MONTREAL , May 4, 2024 /CNW/ - The Port of Montreal is proud to announce the official launch of the 2024 cruise season with the arrival of Holland America's Volendam , having served as a refuge for 1,500 Ukrainian citizens in April 2022 . This is the ship's first call to the metropolis, and in keeping with tradition, a gift was presented to Captain Laurentius Oscar van Eerten.

A promising season

The 2024 cruise season promises to live up to last year's success, with some 50,000 passengers expected between May 4 and October 28 , over the course of 41 operations that include nine calls and 32 boardings/disembarkations. In terms of capacity, ships range from the 180-passenger Le Bellot to the 1,440-passenger Volendam .

"This new cruise season reflects Montreal's appeal as a world-class tourist destination. We are so very proud to offer an outstanding reception area with the Grand Quay and the Port of Montreal Tower, which have become iconic symbols for our city's tourism. This is also a great occasion to spotlight our commitment to innovation and sustainability at our port, as demonstrated by our shore power system," said Julie Gascon , President and CEO of the Port of Montreal .

"Every spring, we can't wait to see the first cruise ship of the season get here. It marks the start of an exciting time for tourism in Montreal . Cruise passengers are warmly greeted by our impressive Bonjour structure overlooking the green roof of the Port of Montreal's Grand Quay. As the gateway to the Americas, Montréal is a must-see destination on the St. Lawrence River. Tourisme Montréal is proud to collaborate with this sector, creating significant economic benefits for the restaurant owners and merchants of Old Montréal," said Yves Lalumière, President and CEO, Tourisme Montréal.

Nine cruise ships will visit Montreal for the very first time:

-  Holland America's Volendam , the first and largest ship of the season -  Two Ponant ships, Champlain and Lyrial, accommodating 180 and 264 passengers     respectively, providing an intimate, luxury cruising experience -  From Villa Vie Residences, Villa Vie Odyssey with 924 passengers -  From Rivages du Monde, World Explorer with a 200-passenger capacity, focused on the adventure experience -  Regent's Seven Seas Grandeur with 750 passengers -  Oceania Cruises' Nautica , with 684 passengers -  Fred Olsen Cruise Lines' Borealis , with 1,320 passengers, and -  Azamara Cruises' Azamara Journey , with 718 passengers, marking the return of the cruise line to Montreal after    an eight-year absence

Three milestones will also be celebrated, further illustrating the loyalty of major cruise lines to Montreal as their port of call of choice:

Regent's 25,000th passenger aboard the Seven Seas Grandeur on September 19

Viking Cruises' 30,000th passenger aboard the Viking Neptune on September 27

Oceania's 40,000th passenger aboard the Nautica on October 6

Presentation of an artwork of an Indigenous artist

The launch of the 2024 cruise season marks a change of direction for one of the Port of Montreal's most cherished marine traditions: presenting plaques to vessels making their first port call. The MPA organized a contest to redesign the traditional plaque, based on the work of a First Nations artist in connection with the marine community. As a result, Wendake native Manon Sioui's All Aboard was selected to welcome the new vessels on their maiden voyage to Montreal . Click here to find out more about the work and its significance .

An exhibition in tribute to Ukrainian refugees

Following an agreement between the Government of the Netherlands , the City of Rotterdam and Holland-America, the Volendam cruise ship served as a refuge for 1,500 Ukrainian citizens for a period of six months starting in April 2022 . To commemorate this act of humanity, a permanent exhibition has been installed aboard ship. It features photographs, children's drawings and other testimonials from Ukrainian refugees.

The exhibition was officially inaugurated in the presence of Julie Gascon , President and CEO of the Port of Montreal , the Volendam crew, the Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Montreal , Eugène Czolij, and the Honorary Consul of the Netherlands in Montreal , Michael Polak .

An ever greener port

The Volendam is one of a number of ships to use shore power technology, which makes it possible for docked vessels to turn off their engines, which in turn reduces GHG emissions. The trend at the Port of Montreal to use this environmentally-friendly solution is up. Last year a record was set when nine cruise ships connected to the system, resulting in a reduction of almost 400 tonnes of GHG emissions. This year, the system is set to be used on even more vessels, demonstrating our ongoing commitment, and that of the cruise lines, to support the marine industry's shift towards decarbonization.

A symbolic tulip to honour the friendship between Canada and the Netherlands

It is noteworthy that a tulip was symbolically presented to all the representatives on board ship to commemorate Remembrance Day, an annual observance in the Netherlands to pay tribute to soldiers and civilians who died in wars and peacekeeping operations since the outbreak of the Second World War. From autumn 1944 to spring 1945, some 175,000 Canadians fought in the campaign to liberate the Netherlands , and more than 7,600 gave their lives doing so.

Montreal launches cruise season with ship that protected 1,500 Ukrainian refugees

People take photos next to the Volendam cruise ship in the Port of Montreal, Saturday, May 4, 2024. The cruise ship is the first to arrive in the port this year and housed 1,500 Ukrainian refugees for several months in 2022. (Graham Hughes, The Canadian Press)

Cruise ship Staff Capt. Rakesh Prasad can't forget the traumatized expressions on the faces of hundreds of Ukrainians who boarded Holland America's Volendam in April 2022.

The 1,500 refugees, who had fled their homeland two months earlier after Russia's invasion triggered an ongoing war there, boarded the ship with their scant possessions largely packed in plastic bags. The ship they boarded at the Port of Rotterdam would be their home for the next six months.

"You looked at the kids, you could feel how afraid they were, there was no happiness," said Prasad, standing by the Volendam's indoor pool after the ship docked at the Port of Montreal on Saturday.

The Volendam, now back to ferrying vacationing travellers, was the first cruise ship of the 2024 season to arrive in the city. The port authority held a ceremony aboard the vessel to celebrate the occasion, with invited guests including diplomats from Ukraine and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Metres from the pool area, toward the entrance of the dining hall, some of the Volendam's crew members hung a large frame filled with drawings from refugee children who lived on the ship in 2022. The art is now a permanent exhibition on the vessel.

Looking around the ship's wood-panelled interior, Eugene Czolij, honorary consul of Ukraine in Montreal, pointed to the picture frame and said the refugees were "clearly hosted in a very friendly manner." He thanked the Dutch authorities for their help.

The refugees' stay aboard the Volendam turned the ship into a Ukrainian village.

"Families were giving out haircuts for free, old ladies were taking care of the kids," Prasad said. "It became a community, and when it came time to leave, the majority wanted to stay."

Volendam Capt. Rens Van Eerten said the Netherlands has a long history of helping refugees flee violence, including during the Second World War when the country helped people escape the Nazis.

Shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine, he said, the Dutch government approached the Volendam's owner, Holland America, asking to hire a ship.

"We had one available," he said. "We hosted (the refugees) and looked after them and made sure they could have a relatively normal life at that time."

But while the Netherlands was eager to help in April 2022, the honorary consul of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Montreal lamented what he described as a sense of "Ukraine fatigue" that has taken hold in some Western countries.

At the start of the war, Michael Polak said everyone was "gung-ho to help Ukraine fight the Russian aggression." But in the last six to 12 months, he said, "some of the allies have become a little bit reticent, doubting their commitments, not wanting to spend money."

"But the fact is that this war is ongoing and far from being resolved," he said.

United States President Joe Biden approved sending Ukraine $1 billion in military assistance on April 24, the first instalment of a roughly $61 billion aid package. It also includes air defence capabilities, artillery rounds, armoured vehicles and other weapons to shore up Ukrainian forces who have seen morale sink as Russian President Vladimir Putin has racked up win after win.

Czolij said the U.S. aid package was very helpful, adding he thought it would help Ukraine win the war. He said the only people who have "fatigue" over Ukraine are those who don't understand that the country is not only defending its territorial integrity but "defending the whole of Europe."

"If Ukraine, God forbid, loses this war," he said, "we will be witnessing world war three."

A cargo vessel moves through a newly opened deep-water channel

First cargo ship leaves Baltimore since bridge collapse via new channel

Bulk carrier uses deep-water channel en route to Canada marking important step in recovery efforts after last month’s disaster

The first cargo ship passed through a newly opened deep-water channel in Baltimore after being stuck in the harbor since the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed four weeks ago, killing a work crew and halting most maritime traffic through the city’s port.

The Balsa 94, a bulk carrier sailing under a Panama flag, passed through the new 35ft channel headed for Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, on Thursday. Two more commercial ships followed later, including a vehicle carrier headed to Panama.

Their long-awaited voyages marked an important step in the ongoing cleanup and recovery effort as crews have been working around the clock to clear thousands of tons of mangled steel and concrete from the entrance to Baltimore’s harbor.

Five vessels that have been stranded for weeks are expected to finally leave Baltimore through the new, temporary channel. Other ships are scheduled to enter the port, which normally processes more cars and farm equipment than any other in the country.

Thousands of longshoremen, truckers and small business owners have seen their jobs affected by the collapse, prompting local and state officials to prioritize reopening the port and restoring its traffic to normal capacity in hopes of easing the economic ripple effects of the collapse. Officials have also established various assistance programs for unemployed workers and others hit by the closure.

The Balsa 94 moved through the channel guided by two tug boats, one in front and one behind. It glided slowly past the fallen bridge and grounded Dali, the enormous container ship that caused the collapse when it slammed into one of the bridge’s support columns.

Pieces of the steel span are still blocking other parts of the port’s main channel, which has a controlling depth of 50ft, enough to accommodate some of the largest cargo and cruise ships on the water. The Balsa 94 is expected to arrive in Canada on Monday.

The Dali lost power and veered off course shortly after leaving the Port of Baltimore bound for Sri Lanka last month.

Six members of a roadwork crew – all Latino immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras – plunged to their deaths in the collapse. Four bodies have been recovered from the underwater wreckage while two remain missing.

A growing memorial for the victims stands near the south end of the bridge.
