Explore Alaska

Where to stay, things to do, where to eat, where to stay in alaska.

Alaska is split into five regions, each with its own unique appeal: the Inside Passage, Southcentral, Interior, Arctic and Southwest. Got your sights set on glaciers, fjords and views of the Pacific Ocean? Then the Inside Passage (also known as the Southeast) is for you. Southcentral is home to the city of Anchorage, one of the main tourist hubs with an array of options when it comes to daytime activities, along with excellent nightlife and entertainment. Keen to steer clear of crowds? Aim for the Arctic region (also known as the Far North) and its sprawling tundra vegetation. The Interior is the literal heart of this state and home to its tallest peak, Denali, as well as a rich diversity of wildlife. Finally, the Southwest is a great base for both history buffs and nature lovers.

Inside Passage

On a budget? Get comfortable at the Best Western Country Lane Inn. It’s a no-frills accommodation option but promises world-class service and hospitality. The Landing Hotel is another budget-friendly choice, right across the road from the Inter-Island Ferry and the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry Terminal. But the best way to see the Inside Passage? On a cruise ship!

Southcentral

Located on the edge of the Alaskan wilderness is Talkeetna Denali View Lodge & Cabins , offering gorgeous mountain views. Otherwise settle in downtown Anchorage at Marriott Anchorage Downtown , celebrated for its eco-focus and convenient positioning. Finally, you can’t go wrong with Hotel Captain Cook , named an LVX Preferred Hotel – and the only one with this esteemed accolade in the Anchorage area.

Rustic resort, Chena Hot Springs Resort offers access to plenty of natural hot springs and an enthralling Aurora Ice Museum. Along with a lodge, suites and cabins, there’s also a camping ground for tents and RVs, and a number of Mongolian-style yurt tents for rent. Aurora Villa is a 4.5-star luxury guesthouse and a prime Northern Lights viewing spot. The floor-to-ceiling windows make it possible to witness the magical spectacle from the comfort of your bed or sofa!

Brooks Camp is a go-to for eco-focused tourists, located on the North Slope in Prudhoe Bay. Then there’s Waldo Arms Hotel , drawing in travellers from far and wide thanks to its once-in-a-lifetime polar bear viewing opportunities and affordable rates.

Anvik River Lodge is a remote, full-service fishing lodge, ideal if you’re looking for a tranquil escape and beautiful river views. Or head over to the Beaver Creek B&B for warm hospitality in Dillingham in the Bristol Bay area.

Explore Doha

Where to stay, things to do, where to eat, where to stay in doha.

The West Bay area, on the eastern side of the city, is the area to stay if you fancy holidaying among diplomats and dignitaries. Accommodation options here vary from extremely grand to slightly pared back but still pretty flashy.

Read travel guide

Grand Hyatt

On the West Bay shore, the five-star Grand Hyatt offers a choice of hotel rooms or suites or luxury villas, several swimming pools and access to one of the biggest private beaches in the city. As for dining options, you’ll be delighted by the Thai, Italian, and Middle Eastern restaurants!

Mondrian Doha

The Mondrian Doha, also in West Bay, is among the Top 12 hotels in Doha, according to Condé Nast Traveller readers. Art and fantasy combine, resulting in interior design that’s opulent and utterly unique. And let’s not even get started on the magnificent spa…

The Mandarin Oriental

Offering a combination of high-end luxury and traditional Qatari charm is The Mandarin Oriental in downtown Msheireb, in the heart of the city. It’s tasteful, modern and features a rooftop swimming pool. If you’re a foodie, you’ll love the fine-dining options from Cantonese to Mediterranean, plus an entire lounge dedicated to gelato!

Hampton by Hilton Doha Old Town

Got a three-star budget? The Hampton by Hilton Doha Old Town has got you covered. Bright and cheery with stunning views over the bay, there’s free Wi-Fi, a business centre and breakfast thrown in. Plus, you’ll be staying opposite The National Museum of Qatar and within walking distance of restaurants and shops.

Frequently asked questions

Due to Doha’s proximity, you can cover a lot of attractions in a day if time is of the essence. However, if you are keen to really experience Doha and its delights, try to spend three to four days here.

Official guidance from the Visit Qatar website indicates that attitudes towards dress in Qatar are relaxed, but visitors (both men and women) are encouraged to dress modestly and avoid revealing clothing in public. It is generally recommended for both genders to keep their shoulders and knees covered.

Lightweight loose-fitting long-sleeved tops and long pants in breathable fabrics and comfortable walking shoes are a necessity. T-shirts and board shorts (for men and women) if you’re planning on swimming at public beaches are also strongly recommended.

The West Bay area is ideal as it’s within the city’s financial and commercial district with plenty of options for sampling the local cuisine and provides easy access to Doha’s main attractions. It’s also just 30 minutes by car from the new Hamad International Airport, so that’s a bonus!

Life happens - we get it! Read more here .

Alcohol consumption is generally not part of the local culture however it is available at licensed hotel restaurants and bars.

Doha is the capital city and main financial hub of Qatar, so it’s kind of a big deal. Doha is also famous for several of its cultural landmarks including the Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd Al Wahhab Mosque, the Souq Waqif market and the awe-inspiring Museum of Islamic Art, to name a few.

Doha is blessed with superb weather all year round, meaning it is a great destination whatever the season. That said, Qatar is known for its scorching summers. If you’re looking for a poolside vacay, aim for November or March to May, when it cools down a little. Just a heads up if you’re planning a March holiday, be sure to check the dates for Ramadan.

Doha dishes up a smorgasbord of things to see and do, from visiting cultural landmarks such as the Imam Muhammad Ibn Abd Al Wahhab Mosque and the awe-inspiring Museum of Islamic Art, to hunting for bargains at the traditional Souq Waqif market and sprawling by the beach.

We've got that covered! Sign up to get the hottest deals sent straight to your phone & emails here . You can also check out our deals online, or speak to one of our Travel Experts.

American Airlines offers pay bump as flight attendant union opens strike center

American Airlines flight attendants opened a strike center, signaling strife amid ongoing contract negotiations, while the Fort Worth-based airline offered an immediate wage increase to reach a deal.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents American’s over 27,000 flight attendants, announced Wednesday that it opened a strike command center at its union headquarters in Euless.

Shortly after, a video message from American CEO Robert Isom was sent to flight attendants stating that a proposal was delivered to the union offering an immediate wage increase of 17% and a new formula to increase 2024 profit sharing among the workers.

If the union agrees, he said, the increase would be effective for the June bid month and increased rates would be shown in pay on June 30.

“We’re committed to paying all of our team members well and competitively,” Isom told shareholders at an annual meeting on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, union advocates will staff the center to answer questions from members, produce written materials in the event of a strike and more. Flight attendants at American are the final major workgroup among North Texas airline unions yet to reach a new contract after many became amendable before the pandemic.

“We are definitely trying to get a deal done,” said Julie Hedrick, president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants this week. She added, “We’re going to hold our CEO to his word when he said that we will be an industry-leading [in] wages.”

Isom was also asked on Wednesday about the flight attendants’ contract during the annual meeting with shareholders.

“Our last remaining open agreement is with our flight attendants, and our plan assumes we reach a deal in 2024,” he said. “We remain in active negotiations with our flight attendants, and we’re working to get a deal as quickly as possible.”

Strike centers and strike authorization votes are often plays among unions in bargaining to place pressure on companies to get a deal to the finish.

Last year, when Southwest Airlines’ pilots represented by the Southwest Airlines Pilots Association were trying to get a contract, the union opened a regional strike center at its headquarters in Dallas. The center opened on Nov. 8. A contract was announced on Dec. 19 and ratified early this year.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants plans to bargain with the company, alongside the National Mediation Board in Washington, D.C., next week as “one more attempt” at a deal, Hedrick said.

Many steps must be met for federal regulators to release a union from mediation and strike.

Flight attendants at American have requested such a release but remain in negotiations. The release, if allowed, would trigger a 30-day cooling off period, where parties can reach an agreement one last time. At the end of 30 days, without an agreement, an airline union would be allowed to strike and companies can lock out employees.

Union officials said every one of American’s 10 crew bases for flight attendants have trained representatives to answer questions.

With the cost of almost everything on the rise, many of us have taken to holidaying more locally over the past few summers. But we’ve just spotted an unbelievable deal that could see you visit Egypt this summer for less than it would cost you to book a return train journey in many parts of the UK, at the moment.

As part of Travel Republic’s ‘Sizzling Summer Deals’ you could stay at a stunning Sharm-El-Sheikh hotel with its very own private beach for an entire week for just £95. And this is actually based on two adults sharing one room, so it’s really only £48 per person for your entire stay.

If you fancy jetting off to Egypt this July, keep reading to find out everything you need to know about the incredible deal.

The price includes seven nights at the hotel in Egypt.

What does the £48 per person price include?

For £48 per person – or £95 in total – you’ll be staying at the Amar Sina Village hotel in the Hadaba region for seven nights . It is room-only in one of their standard rooms, however, you can upgrade to bed-and-breakfast, half-board or even all-inclusive for an additional fee.

For example, if you want to go half-board (where you’ll receive your breakfast and dinner at the hotel) this costs just £5 per person extra for the entirety of the holiday.

You can also upgrade to a standard room with a double or twin bed for £19 more.

The hotel itself is located a few minutes away from Sharm El-Sheikh international airport, according to Travel Republic, with it also being a short distance from the heart of the city.

The deal is Room Only in one of the hotel's Standard Rooms.

What are previous travellers saying about the hotel?

While there are a number of mixed reviews on TripAdvisor, one traveller called it ‘an absolute gem'.

The went on to expand upon this, declaring: “I have been to Egypt several times before, previously staying in larger hotels as travelling with children. I was a little wary after reading reviews here but I needn't have worried.

" Amar Sina has been a perfect getaway. It may be a little dated in places but the rustic charm far outweighs the corporate blandness I have experienced in larger hotels. The staff are warm and welcoming and will do all they can to make your stay as relaxing as possible. I will definitely return here without any hesitation.”

Another traveller called it ‘cheap and cheerful'.

The hotel is just minutes from the city and neighbouring airport.

How much are flights to Sharm-El-Sheikh?

If you’re considering booking this unmissable deal, you might have wondered how much a flight will cost to Sharm-El-Sheikh. And there are a few different options available to you.

Easyjet flies from Birmingham, Bristol, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester. On the other hand, TUI, British Airways, Egyptair and Pegasus Air also fly from the UK to Egypt, with direct and connecting flights available.

When we searched, the price for the dates in question ranged from around £340 from London, all the way through to £488 for direct flights from Birmingham. So, it’s worth bearing this in mind when you go to book.

But with the hotel being such a bargain, this should still make it a pretty affordable holiday away this summer.

The deal is available from travelrepublic.com .

Election latest: D-Day blunder hasn't lost election, minister insists; Tories vow to scrap ULEZ expansion

The latest updates from the general election campaign, as the transport secretary denies Rishi Sunak's decision to leave D-Day commemoration events early will cost the Tories the election and the Conservatives promise a "backing drivers" bill.

We've been speaking to Transport Secretary Mark Harper this morning.

Unsurprisingly, he is pushed on the prime minister leaving D-Day events early on Thursday.

He repeats that it was right for Rishi Sunak to apologise for his premature departure from Normandy - and that it was a mistake for him to exit in such a fashion.

Asked if this is the moment the Conservatives have "definitely lost this election", Mr Harper says: "No - I don't agree with that."

Pushed on whether the Conservatives' manifesto launch - expected next week - will save the campaign, Mr Harper says he hopes the document will "help frame the choice for people that we've already set out".

Mr Harper was also asked about the Conservatives' policy announcement today - their pledge to reverse the expansion of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London.

He said the expansion was motivated by money and not air quality - adding that parts of outer London had voted against Mr Khan to register their opposition.

Mr Khan won a record third term as mayor in this year's race, beating the Conservatives' Susan Hall by a quarter of a million votes.

The Conservatives have pledged to scrap the controversial expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London if they stay in power after the general election.

The party also promises local referendums on "aggressive" schemes like 20mph zones and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods.

The Tories said reversing the policy of London mayor Sadiq Khan would form part of a new "backing drivers bill" that would stop the "war" their rivals had "launched" on motorists.

But Labour accuses their rivals of having an "abysmal record" on drivers.

Good morning!

We're approaching the end of the second full week of the fight for all 650 parliamentary seats - and the keys to Number 10.

Political parties are spreading out across the country to get their message out ahead of polling day on 4 July.

Here's what you need to know:

  • The Tories  have pledged to scrap the ULEZ expansion in a "backing drivers bill" if they stay in power. The party also promises local referendums on "aggressive" schemes like 20mph zones and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. They will be campaigning in the North East this morning before heading to Yorkshire in the afternoon.
  • Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves  will be on the campaign trail for Labour in the South East while Sir Keir Starmer will be out in London;
  • The D-Day row rumbles on, as a poll finds the majority of Britons think Rishi Sunak's decision to leave commemorations before they ended was unacceptable;
  • A snap poll found Nigel Farage came out on top in last night's TV debate between leading figures from the seven main parties - while viewers thought Penny Mourdant would be a better PM than Sunak;

This morning's guests will be:

  • Transport secretary Mark Harper joined us at 7.15am;
  • Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds at 8.15am;
  • SNP leader John Swinney at 11.15am;

Stick with us for all the latest political news throughout the day.

Snap findings from a More in Common poll of more than 1,000 viewers of last night's BBC debate suggest Nigel Farage came out on top.

According to the poll results , the audience is most likely to think Reform UK's leader won, with 25% picking him.

Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner comes in second with 19%.

Just 7% thought Tory Penny Mordaunt won, but 32% believe she'd be a better prime minister than Rishi Sunak - with 12% picking him.

Full Results

  • Nigel Farage - 25%
  • Angela Rayner - 19%
  • None of the above - 14%
  • Carla Denyer - 11%
  • Stephen Flynn - 10%
  • Penny Mordaunt - 7%
  • Daisy Cooper - 5%
  • Rhun ap Iowerth - 2%
  • Don’t know - 8%

Almost half (47%) of 2019 Tory voters watching the debate thought that Mr Farage won the debate, while Ms Rayner leads among 2019 Labour and Lib Dem voters who tuned in.

The poll also shows viewers are most likely to think the SNP's Stephen Flynn (net +31), the Green Party's Carla Denyer (net +31) and the Lib Dem's Daisy Cooper (+30) did well in the debate.

Reform's original candidate for Clacton will stand as an independent against Nigel Farage in the upcoming general election.

Anthony Mack quit Reform after he was replaced by Mr Farage earlier this week to vie for the seat in Essex.

But that hasn't stopped him from trying to win there.

Mr Mack is expected to hold a press conference later today.

Olympic athletes, top musicians and an ex-soap actor are among those standing to become members of parliament at the general election.

The deadline for candidates to submit their nominations passed earlier today.

Notable names on the list include:

  • Blur drummer Dave Rowntree, Labour, Mid Sussex
  • Double Olympic gold medal rower James Cracknell, Conservative, Colchester
  • Rock star Tom Gray from the band Gomez, Labour, Brighton Pavilion
  • Former Coronation Street actor Marc Anwar, independent, Bury North
  • Gogglebox's Josh Tapper, Labour, Hertfordshire
  • Olympian Marc Jenkins, Conservative, Gower

Count Binface has announced he will stand against Rishi Sunak in his Richmond and Northallerton constituency.

Speaking on his podcast, Trash Talk, Binface said it would be like "Fury vs Usyk times a billion" in the July 4 election.

"That's right, I am here right now in Richmond and Northallerton and I can announce that I will be taking on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in electoral combat on July 4.

"You shirked D-Day Rishi, you can't miss the B-Day.

"That's right. Binface vs Sunak is going to be Fury vs Usyk times a billion. Bring it on."

Binface recently came 11th in the London Mayoral Elections, where he earned 24,260 votes.

It was reported last weekend that allies of Penny Mordaunt claimed Downing Street was keeping her "in a box" during the election campaign because Rishi Sunak's team see her as a threat.

Well, after her barnstorming performance in a TV debate against politicians from six opposition parties, the Leader of the Commons is well and truly out of her box now. And she mustn't be put back in it.

Her opening words in this 90-minute showdown were explosive. The prime minister, she declared, had been "completely wrong" to leave the D-day ceremonies in Normandy early. No pulling of punches there.

She said the PM was wrong, not once, not twice, but three times. No wonder Number 10 see her as a threat. If this was an audition for a leadership bid after the election, her friends will claim she passed with flying colours.

But once she'd dug her black stilettos out of the PM's back with her opening remarks, after that she was relentlessly on message in hammering Labour on its policies on tax, immigration and crime.

She was at her most combative on the Tories' controversial allegation – first made by Rishi Sunak in his TV debate with Sir Keir Starmer on Tuesday – that Labour is planning a £2,000 tax grab if it wins the election.

This attack triggered the most heated clash of the whole debate, when Mordaunt traded blows with Labour's Angela Rayner on tax. It was a shouting match that went on long after presenter Mishal Husain attempted – but failed - to stop them.

It was all the more heated because the pair were standing next to each other at the end of the row of seven leading politicians, including Nigel Farage, the Lib Dems' Daisy Cooper and the SNP's Westminster leader Stephen Flynn.

For the rest of the debate, Rayner was slightly subdued, rather like Sir Keir had been against the PM on Tuesday. Rayner didn't even attack Sunak about D-day at the start. Nor did Daisy Cooper. Like Sir Keir, his deputy needs to raise her game.

Besides Mordaunt, on D-day Farage claimed Sunak had been unpatriotic and Flynn accused the PM of putting his own political career before public service and Normandy war veterans. Strong stuff.

Mordaunt also tore into Rayner over her previous voting record against renewing Trident. And the brightness of Rayner's red dress wasn't matched by a bright performance in the debate, although she improved as the debate went on. Mordaunt, incidentally, wore Thatcher blue. Remind you of anyone?

Throughout the debate, Farage was typically impish. His quips included claiming Starmer was "very dull" and "Blair without the flair". The PM, he joked, was "slippery Sunak". Yes, he's used those jibes before, but the audience enjoyed them.

Stephen Flynn had his good moments, most notably when he condemned Brexit, an attack on the Conservatives and Labour that the audience enjoyed.

But this debate was about Penny Mordaunt. It was her show, despite the large cast list. If she has been kept in a box by Number 10 up to now, the PM's allies will have been delighted on her attacks on Angela Rayner and Labour's policies.

But they won't have appreciated her blunt – and completely unprompted criticism – of the prime minister over the big story of the day, his D-day snub.

It was a story about a blunder of the PM's own making. It wasn't a gaffe, or an accident. It was sheer bad planning, terrible political judgment, embarrassing and highly damaging to Sunak and the Tory election campaign.

That, apparently was, Penny Mordaunt's view. And she said so. Number 10 won't be happy. A threat? You bet.

Foreign Secretary Lord David Cameron has been the victim of a hoax video call and messages from someone claiming to be the former president of Ukraine.

The government said it was making the incident public to stave off any attempts to manipulate footage of Lord Cameron.

The Foreign Office said a "number of text messages were exchanged followed by a brief video call between the foreign secretary and someone purporting to be Petro Poroshenko, former president of Ukraine".

Mr Poroshenko served as Ukrainian president between 2014 and 2019, and has remained a prominent figure in the country since leaving office.

"Whilst the video call clearly appeared to be with Mr Poroshenko, following the conversation the foreign secretary became suspicious," the Foreign Office said, adding contact details for other people were requested by the caller.

"Whilst regretting his mistake, the foreign secretary thinks it important to call out this behaviour and increase efforts to counter the use of misinformation."

Politicians have received repeated warnings in recent months about the growing threat of misinformation and disinformation, especially as artificial intelligence technology improves.

The prime minister is not the only one whose feet are being held to the fire over D-Day 80th anniversary commemorations.

Northern Ireland's first minister has been criticised for not attending, with only the deputy going instead.

DUP leader Gavin Robinson said it had been an opportunity for Michelle O'Neill to act as a first minister for all.

"With men from across the island being remembered, I am disappointed that the deputy first minister was alone in Normandy and the other half of the joint office was absent.

"When we consider how so many from this island have only been able to openly remember their grandparents' war efforts in recent years, this was a missed opportunity for leadership and reconciliation."

He continued: "The first minister should recognise it was a mistake."

Mr Robinson also accused Rishi Sunak of undermining "the authenticity of the speech" he made at the British Normandy Memorial by departing early.

A spokesperson for the Executive Office said: "The Executive Office [TEO] receives many invitations and endeavours to attend as many events as possible.

"TEO is represented by the first minister, deputy first minister and junior ministers.

"This week, TEO was represented at events including the D-Day commemorations; business awards and the Your Time to Shine female leaders celebration event."
