Departure from Singapore Changi Airport for your flight to Zagreb, Croatia's Northwestern capital.

Arrival into Zagreb airport. Meet your driver for a private transfer to Zagreb and your hotel – the Esplanade. Spend the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight in Zagreb.

Day 3: ZAGREB (B/-/-)

Meet your local guide for a private walking tour of Zagreb . Croatia’s elegant capital is an eclectic mix of Central European architecture and unbeatable Mediterranean charm. It is a city of lush parks and avenues, grandiose edifices and quirky museums, everyday café culture and al fresco living. Discover its bustling streets and squares in a leisurely walk with your guide. Enjoy the greenery of Zrinjevac Park, the haste in Ban Jelacic Square, the history talk in mediaeval settlements of the Upper Town. Admire famous landmarks such as St Mark’s church with multi-colored roof and Croatian coats of arms in St Mark’s square, the center of Croatian government and parliament. Continue your walk to the Lower Town of Zagreb, dominated by the impressive building of the Croatian National Theatre. Today, meet your private guide for a private tour of Zagorje region, Zagreb hinterland . Ride through the bucolic landscape of green slopes speckled with mediaeval castles and picturesque villages. Discover Trakocan Castle , a romantic 13th century stronghold with rich historic heritage. Sitting upon a hill and facing its reflection in the lake underneath, it leads you into a true fairytale. Meander its hallways, salons and luxuriously furnished rooms and revive a whole world gone by… The lush region of Zagorje is not only known for castles but also for its culinary delicacies! Stop for lunch in one of the charming local taverns and taste the typical dishes of the region while sipping local “rakija”. After lunch you will venture far into the past at Krapina Neanderthal Museum . It’s situated near the world-famous prehistoric site of Husnjakovo Hill, where the local paleontologist Dragutin Gorjanovic Kramberger led major excavations in 1899. Some 900 human fossil bones (dated 125 000 years ago) were found which makes this the largest collection of Neanderthal people collected at a single locality. Enter the museum’s virtual cave that evokes the Stone Age and learn about the ways of life and the significance of Neanderthals in the evolution of mankind. Later today your driver will take you back to Zagreb.

Day 5: ZAGREB - PLITVICE - SPLIT (B/-/-)

This morning meet your driver for a private transfer to Split – gem of Dalmatian coast. On the way, stop to visit Plitvice Lakes national park with a local guide. Harmony of the blues and the greens in intact nature of deep woodland makes this one of the most beautiful national parks in the world. Day 6: SPLIT  (B/-/-)

Meet your local guide for a private walking tour of Split . This unique 1700-years-old town features a living monument of the Diocletian’s Palace, included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Drawn by gorgeous nature and mild Mediterranean climate, Roman emperor Diocletian chose this small corner of the world to spend the rest of his days. He started to build his luxurious palace around 293 AD and retired shortly after. In the centuries that followed, the town overgrew the Palace’s walls and it became the core of today’s buzzing coastal metropolis of Split. A walk with your guide reveals the layers of history on every step and every magnificent landmark. The majestic square of Peristil rises above the mysterious Substructures of the Palace; pretty Venetian palazzi encircle lively squares, while the colourful green market and a relaxing waterfront promenade create a cozy living room for the locals…

Day 7: SPLIT – PELJEŠAC – DUBROVNIK   (B/-/-)

Meet your guide and driver at the hotel for a private transfer to Dubrovnik. After a short ferry ride to the mainland you will enjoy a scenic ride through Peljesac Peninsula, one of the best wine-growing regions in Croatia. On the way stop to visit the beautiful Rizman Winery in the village of Klek . This family-owned winery enjoys a spectacular hilltop position overlooking Peljesac Peninsula, Croatia’s best wine growing region, and produces top-quality wines. Croatia's peak season runs between July and August, with temperatures in the high 60s or mid 80s on the coast. But in this region, you can expect plenty of sunshine from May to October, which are the best times to visit if you want to take advantage of Croatia's beautiful beaches and islands. The inland areas are also hot in the summer but can get cold in the winter with low temperatures and snowfall. Winter on the coast is milder and frequent rain can be expected.

Culture and customs

Generally, Croatians are very proud of their country and cultural heritage. While this may not be obvious in everyday life, the Slavic heritage of Croatian people becomes more evident during festivals and national holidays, where cities and villages come to life with traditional costume, folk music and feasts. While most of Croatia's population are Roman Catholic, there are also groups of people who identify as Serbian Orthodox, Muslim, Protestant and Jewish. Having endured war, hardship and frequent earthquakes, the people of Croatia have a great amount of national pride and connection to their country and family. It's quite common for extended families to live together and children to remain close to their parents well into adulthood. Time for leisure and family is highly valued, particularly along the coast, where many offices end their day at 3pm.

Eating and drinking

Croatian cuisine   is heavily influenced by its surrounding countries. Separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea, cuisine along the coast tends to have more of a Mediterranean flair. Fish and seafood are integral to many coastal dishes, such as brodet (fish stew) and crni rizot (black risotto made with squid). Homemade pasta and olive oil are also dietary staples. Further inland, you’ll find heartier dishes with Austrian, Hungarian, and Turkish influences such as cobanac (a goulash-like stew) and kulen (paprika-seasoned sausage).

Foodies will definitely want to visit Istria – home to award-winning olive oil, wild asparagus, rare white truffles and excellent wines – which has gained an international reputation as a foodie destination.

Croatians enjoy their beer (Karlovacko and Ozujsko are two of the most popular local brews), but they love their kava (coffee). Take a cue from the locals and spend a morning people-watching at a cafe over a kava – it’s a Saturday morning tradition in Zagreb. Rakija (brandy) is the spirit of choice, with many restaurants offering a small glass before a meal. Another favorite is Pelinkovac, a must-try bitter liqueur.

1. Pasticada

A slow-cooked beef dish usually served with gnocchi. This Dalmatian staple can be found in many restaurants in this region.

2. Manestra

There are many variations to Istria’s hearty take on minestrone soup, but it usually includes beans, corn and meat.

3. Paski sir

This popular hard cheese is produced exclusively from the milk of sheep on the Island of Pag. It gets its unique pungent taste from the sheep’s aromatic herb diet.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with  Bosnia and Herzegovina ,  Slovenia ,  Hungary ,  Serbia  and  Montenegro , Croatia benefits from more than 5,000 km of coastline that spans along the Adriatic Sea. In addition to the mainland, Croatia also has many islands, some inhabited, some not. Croatia's terrain is very diverse and varies from flat plains to low mountains and highlands, limestone karst cliffs, wetlands, lakes and forests of cypress. Nature reserves and wetland areas are home to large populations of migratory birds, deer, bats and bears. Visitors will also see much of the land is used for agriculture with vineyards, lavender fields, olive groves and orchards being prevalent in rural areas. Croatia's cities, while developed, have managed to maintain a high level of charm with cobblestone streets, ancient housing, historic squares and heritage buildings being preserved and still used by the current population.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the land now known as Croatia has been occupied by humans since the Stone Age. Croatia's geographical position in  Europe  allowed a great amount of influence from neighboring regions, with tribes and people from different cultures and groups making their mark. The first Kingdom of Croatia was formed in 925 but by the 12th century Croatia had formed a union with Hungary, with a Hungarian King instated as leader of both territories. During the 15th century, Croatia lost territory to the Ottoman Empire and, in later centuries, once again came under Hungarian rule. Evidence of these many cultural influences can be seen in the architecture, cuisine and archaeological ruins of contemporary Croatia.

Recent history

Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia formed a union in 1918 to create the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, but the occupation of Axis forces during World War II lead to the creation of the Independent State of Croatia, which only lasted a couple of years during the war. By the end of the war in 1945, Croatia had become a Socialist Republic (within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, together with Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia, Macedonia and Montenegro), with the constitution of 1963 attempting to alleviate tensions surrounding the balance of power between Serbians and Croats. By 1980, after the death of President Tito (founder of modern Yugoslavia), economic and political difficulties resulted in a near collapse of government. What followed was years of conflict, polarity and political turmoil. The referendum of 1991 resulted in an overwhelming vote for independence, with Croatia and Slovenia declaring independence from Yugoslavia in June of the same year. Much armed conflict followed and lasted until 1995, leading to great loss of civilian life and displacement, creating large populations of refugees. However, the last two decades have been a time of peace and reconciliation for the people of Croatia and the country even joined the European Union in 2013.

Considered one of the most impressive examples of early Byzantine architecture, this church in Zadar was built way back in the 9th century. 3. Croatian National Theatre

4. Diocletian’s Palace

One of Split’s main attractions, this UNESCO World Heritage monument is considered one of the best-preserved Roman palaces in the world. 5. Cathedral of St Lovro

This cathedral located 30 minutes from Split is well known for its distinct Romanesque portal crafted by one of Croatia's most celebrated sculptors, Radovan. Mythological creatures and biblical figures all feature heavily, with saints, lions, sirens and centaurs all gracing the spectacular doorways.

6. Rector’s Palace

Also known as Dubrovnik Museum, Rector’s Palace is an impressive building in itself. With soaring arches, period furniture and a dramatic staircase, this structure steals the show from the museum exhibits it holds within.

7. Dubrovnik Synagogue

Reported to be the second oldest synagogue in Europe and the world’s oldest Sefardic synagogue still in use, Dubrovnik’s synagogue is still a place for the local Jewish community to worship on holy days. Sustaining damage from earthquakes and wars, this small but well-cared-for structure stills stands today due to its historical value and unique design.

8. Marco Polo Tower

While not the most elaborate or opulent building in Croatia, the Marco Polo Tower of Korcula has much historical significance. It is believed that Marco Polo was born in this medieval, walled city and this tower named in his honor rises above the town as a reminder of his legacy. Croatia's climate is split into two different regions - along the coast and in the mainland.

Depending on which region you're travelling to, the weather may vary slightly with temperatures higher in the mainland area due to a lack of sea breeze.

Winter temperatures are also lower in the mainland with snowfall expected and enjoyed, whereas on the coast, snowfall is quite uncommon.

Is Croatia a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQIA+ travelers in Croatia. Homosexuality has been legal in Croatia since 1977 and is tolerated but not widely accepted. Public displays of affection between same-sex couples may be met with hostility in lesser populated cities. Gay venues are virtually non-existent outside Zagreb but this is improving every year.

What's the transport like in Croatia?

From the ancient city walls of Dubrovnik to the pristine beaches of the Dalmatian Coast, and the breathtaking Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia has plenty to offer with her rich history, diverse culture, and stunning landscapes. So what is the best way to travel through Croatia? How many days is enough?

Instead of trying to see everything that can lead to overwhelming fatigue, here’s our suggested 2-week free and easy Croatia itinerary (highly personalisable!) that prioritises the main attractions and recreation activities so you can make the most of your limited time.

Note: Currently, there is no direct flight from Singapore to Croatia . That makes the shortest travelling time between the two destinations to be slightly over 14 hours with a layover. With that in mind, taking at least 2 weeks for a Croatia vacation would be just right. Ready to # TiqOff ?

2-Week Free & Easy Croatia Itinerary

Day 1 & 2: Zagreb (Capital, Central Croatia)

Start slow from the vibrant capital city of Zagreb, located in Central Croatia. After a long flight from Singapore, you deserve to chill and enjoy Zagreb’s lively cafe culture or dine in one of the many restaurants (foodies alert!). That includes trying the beer and wine , which the city is known for.

When you have rejuvenated, Zagreb, which is also known for its cultural attractions and historic landmarks can be explored on foot. Consider joining a walking tour with a funicular ride to Old Town or embark on the Hop On Hop Off Panoramic bus where you can sightsee the city in a breeze! Don’t miss the Museum of Broken Relationships located in a former palace for a beautiful and moving experience.

Recommended stay: at least 2 days

If you are planning to go on day trips such as the Plitvice Lakes and Rastoke Day Trip , you would need to allocate more days to Zagreb. For nature lovers, read on for your onward journey!

By the way, while tipping is not mandatory in Croatia, it is appreciated. If you found service to be good, why not leave a tip and make somebody’s day? That said, it is not common to tip on a credit card so it’s good to carry some small change.

Day 3: Plitvice Lakes National Park

Located approximately 130km from Zagreb, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is a mere 2-hour car ride away under favourable traffic conditions. Since it is located in between Zagreb and Zadar (next destination), it’s worth considering an overnight stay in this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site . After all, the Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Croatia!

Easily accessible via boat, train or self-drive, one would actually need a couple of days to explore the national park thoroughly. If time is limited, consider joining a tour or engaging a private guide to bring you to the breathtaking cascading lakes (out of 16) and waterfalls (more than 90 in the national park!) – all interconnected.

You would be mesmerised by the changing water colours, ranging from bright emerald green to deep blue. While you’re there, don’t miss the many legends, including the Legend of the Black Queen .

Recommended stay: at least 1 day

Day 4 to 6:  Zadar (Coastal City)

From the Plitvice Lakes National Park, travel about 2 hours by car to the fascinating coastal city of Zadar. Here, you will be awed by the abundance of Roman and mediaeval remains with innovative modern architectural structures, which you can easily explore in Zadar Old Town on foot. Amidst the old and new, don’t miss unique attractions such as the Sea Organ and Sun Salutation .

The former is a natural musical instrument installed beneath seven flights of 10-metre-wide stone stairs that extend to the sea. Under the pressure of water, the sea organ creates a natural music that one can enjoy while sitting on the stairs to admire Zadar’s beautiful sunset. A stone’s throw away, the Sun Salutation produces a dreamy light show at night, mimicking twinkling starlight powered by solar cells that absorb sunlight during the day.

Located on the north Dalmatian coast, Zadar offers the opportunity to island-hop to smaller and less touristic islands as compared to those in south Dalmatia. If you are looking for local experiences in idyllic nature, this one’s for you. There are options for day trips or you can go free and easy by taking the regular local ferry or catamaran . Aside from the crystal blue waters (yes to snorkelling!), think golden beaches, bare hills and bustling villages – you may need more time if you plan to go on an island-hopping adventure.

Day 7 to 9: Split (2nd Largest City in Croatia)

Time to venture to the largest city on Croatia’s coast! Less than 2 hours’ drive from Zadar, Split is where you can indulge in the bustling waterfront and have fresh seafood with Croatian wine daily!

Right in the centre of the Old Town of Split, you will also find ruins that date back to the Roman Empire. With many of its buildings still intact, the Palace of Diocletian is a UNESCO world heritage site not to be missed! Make your way through the maze of streets and cobblestoned lanes in the Old Town, and consider a meal at the People’s Square (Narodni Trg). Remember to look up for the old town clock.

To immerse in inland nature, visit Marjan Forest Park for a picnic and an aerial view of Split from the hilltops. There are various hiking trails and cycling paths for those who prefer to get active. For the adventurous, Split offers a range of sea kayaking options, Ziplining at the Cetina Canyon , and more.

Being the 2nd largest city in Croatia after Zagreb, Split also offers amazing day tours and excursions to nearby attractions such as the Krka National Park (known for its pristine waterfalls) and Blue Cave and Hvar tour . Depending on the activities that you intend to partake in during your vacation, ensure that you have proper travel insurance coverage.

Day 10 to 13: Dubrovnik (Southeast Coastal City)

You’ve probably heard of Dubrovnik as compared to the other Croatian cities, especially if you are a fan of GOT (Games of Thrones). This south-eastern Croatian city was the primary filming location for King’s Landing in the world-famous HBO television series. Regarded as the most picturesque city on the Dalmatian coast , Dubrovnik boasts beautiful beaches and access to many islands, as well as a famous Old Town and its city walls.

Constructed over a 500-year period mainly during the 12th and 17th centuries, the Walls of Dubrovnik encircle most of the city, with a complex system of forts, casemates, bastions, towers, and detached forts. At the base station just outside of the Old Town, consider taking a ride on the Dubrovnik Cable Car to the top of Mount Srd for further sightseeing, including amazing views of the city. Try to time your visit to catch the sunset.

Also, it would be a waste not to go on a Game of Thrones tour , even if you are not a GOT fan. For those who can’t get enough of nature, consider doing a day trip to Mljet , Croatia’s greenest island, or stay there for a couple of days if time permits.

Note that prices at Dubrovnik tend to be more expensive, so plan ahead your length of stay and travel activities. For those who are short on time, consider flying from Dubrovnik to Zagreb. There are daily direct flights provided by Croatia Airlines. You can get good savings if you book your air tickets in advance.

Alternatively, those into slow travel can take local transport such as the train or bus. The latter is recommended for affordability and greater convenience, not to mention travel sustainability. For your information, taking the bus is the most common way to travel between Dubrovnik to Zagreb even though it takes 10 hours.

It’s only fitting to start your road trip in the heart of Croatia! Zagreb functions as its capital and is steeped in so much culture. Start your day at the iconic Ben Jelacic , a popular meeting spot located in the contemporary and hip lower town. Day 2: Zagreb

Grab yourself some delicious local treats, and make a day trip out to the Plitvice Lakes , located about two hours away from the city.

After a day of exploring all that the park has to offer, make your way back to the city and cap things off with a hearty house-made burger, and a pint or two at the Garden Brewery , home to a refreshing and unique variety of beers and sours.

Day 3: Zadar

After a quick cultural lesson and a taste of the natural landscapes Croatia has to offer, make a trip down to the city of Zadar, located along the stunning Dalmatian coast and known for its picturesque waterfront, historic old town, and unique attractions.

Upon arrival, you know the drill: Settle in at your accommodation and make your way out. Chances are, you’ll likely arrive just in time for lunch. So head to a local konoba, or tavern, for traditional Dalmatian fare. While there are plenty of places to choose from, we’d recommend Konoba Rafaelo for something a little more laid-back.

Then, head down to the Roman Forum and dive into Zadar’s unique history. Here, ancient columns and ruins paint a vivid and intriguing picture of the city’s past. As in Roman times, the Forum stands as the centre of civil and religious life — with St. Donatus Church , an early Byzantine masterpiece, located right next to it.

And if you’re a fan of stunning architecture, explore the area and maybe even pay a visit to the Cathedral of St. Anastasia , where you’ll find more Romanesque buildings.

What’s a trip to Croatia without savouring the freshest seafood? Make your way to one of the many seafood restaurants along the waterfront promenade, and enjoy dinner with a stunning view of the Adriatic Sea.

Day 4: Zadar

Pack your sunscreen and fill your bag with snacks — we’re starting our day bright and early because it’s island hopping time!

Boat tours are dime a dozen, so pick the one that takes you to the highlights that work best for you — whether you’re in it for an action-packed afternoon, or for a chill island-hopping adventure.

Arrive back to the mainland just before sunset, and head over to the iconic Sea Organ . As its name suggests, the Sea Organ harnesses the power of the sea to produce a series of melodious sounds.  Watch the sunset before marvelling at the Sun Salutation , an urban, solar-powered installation that offers an ethereal experience with the soothing sounds of the Sea Organ in the background.

Day 5: Krka National Park

On your way down to Split, we’d recommend making a quick little detour to Krka National Park , known for its series of seven waterfalls.

Must-visits include the Skradinski Buk Falls , as well as the Visovac Island , and the Roski Slap Waterfall — all of which can be easily accessed with a relaxing boat trip!

While there isn’t any accommodation available in the National Park, your closest option would be the town of Skradin, where there are plenty of options to stay and eat.

Day 6: Split

No trip to Croatia would be complete without a visit to Split! While many travellers would recommend spending at least three to four days here, we reckon that first-time travellers would want to conquer as much of Croatia as possible!

After checking into your accommodation, the first order of business is to visit one of Croatia’s biggest historical marvels — Diocletian’s Palace . This World UNESCO Heritage Site forms the backbone of the Old Town and was once a residential villa built for the Roman emperor Diocletian. Today, it offers tourists a peek into the late Roman antiquity with its ancient alleys and gorgeously crafted peristyle. While here, don’t forget to visit the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, where stellar views await from its bell tower.

Stop by for lunch at one of the many establishments in this area or grab something to-go, because we’re headed up to Marjan Hill to catch scenic views. If you’re lucky, you might be able to channel that main character energy with the occasional ABBA song coming from the passing Mamma Mia tour boats!

If you’re in the mood for more beach time, visit Kasjuni Beach , a unique pebble beach nestled at the foot of Marjan Hill. If the weather isn’t too chilly, go take a dip in the waters.

After basking in the stillness of it all, make your way through the charming streets of the old town, soaking in the ambience that comes alive at night.

Day 7: Split

Start your day at the Green Market , also known as Pazar, a local haunt that features a wide variety of fresh produce and local snacks. Opened daily from 6:30 AM to late in the evening, you can get your hands on pretty much everything and anything — from flowers for your boo, to artisanal treats for the foodie in you.

Spend the afternoon at the Ivan Mestrovic Gallery , which showcases the works of Croatia’s most famous sculptor. If history and the arts is your thing, another must-visit would be the Split Archaeological Museum , established in 1820 and stands as the oldest museum in Croatia!

Go back to the city centre, and make your way to the Riva, Split’s waterfront promenade. Enjoy your dinner with a view, and grab a tipple or two to cap off the night.

Day 8: Hvar

After basking in nature and culture, it’s time to get the party going! With a reputation of being a party island, you can expect to find anything that tickles your fancy — from casual day bars to the more boujee island clubs.

Take a ferry out from Split, and begin your day in Hvar Town , where you can explore the cobbled streets and quaint shops and cathedrals.

If time permits, hike up to the Fortica , or Hvar Fortress for panoramic views of the town and its islands. Otherwise, get your drink on by the beach (after all, it’s 5 PM somewhere, right?) and get ready to dance the night away!

Day 9: Dubrovnik

It’s only fitting that we end our 10-day trip in the most popular place in Croatia. After all, this city was catapulted to international attention as being the iconic King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, as is known as the Pearl of the Adriatic.

Upon arrival, make your way to the Old Town , which sits nicely on the Adriatic Sea. As a pedestrian-only town, you’ll have the chance to explore every nook and cranny. If getting lost on your own terms is not something you enjoy, there are plenty of walking tours available! We’d recommend checking out the Game of Thrones tours if you want to see the iconic film spots in the flesh.

Otherwise, opt to walk the City Walls , where you get to enjoy panoramic views of the well-preserved mediaeval architecture and of course, the Adriatic Sea.

After descending from the walls, explore Rector’s Palace , a beautiful Gothic-Renaissance building that used to house the Republic of Ragusa’s rulers.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, it’s time to grab lunch! Head over to Bura Bistro & Bar for delicious cocktails and some of the freshest seasonal produce, served in traditional Croatian style.

Stroll along Stradun , the main street of the Old Town, lined with shops, cafes, and other historic buildings, like Orlando’s Column and the Sponza Palace !

Not to be missed is the Dubrovnik Cathedral , an architectural gem that features impressive sculptures and art.

Day 10: Dubrovnik

On our final day of the ultimate Croatia road trip, we’re going all in! Enjoy a quick breakfast, before catching a ferry to Lokrum Island , a tranquil paradise just a short 10-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik.

Go on to explore the botanical gardens , visit the monastery originally built in the 11th century, and check out the Dead Sea (which is actually a salt lake), located inland on the south of the island. If the weather permits, go on and bathe in the calm and peaceful waters!

After spending your afternoon basking in nature, head back to Dubrovnik and continue relaxing at Banje Beach , one of the many beautiful beaches available, with its crystal clear waters and views of the city walls.

Then, catch one final sunset in the charming city by taking a cable car up to Mount Srd (if you’re game, you can choose to hike up too!), where you can enjoy views straight out of a postcard.
