Our San Francisco Food Tours take you into the heart of a San Francisco neighborhood. For example, in North Beach (Little Italy) our local guides explore the neighborhood, in which they live, through the food. From local coffee shops to local chocolatiers, to families who have been making pastries and salami for over a hundred years, as well as pizza makers, which natives have been savoring for years, you'll come away as enamored by San Francisco as we are. I have been on a couple of tours with sidewalk food tours. One in NYC and this one in San Francisco mission district. Both were excellent and highly recommended. One of the most impressive parts about this tour was the amount of food. There was LOTS of food so come hungry! Our guide was pleasant and impressive.

Had a great time on our Food Tour of the Mission District with Lauren. Some fabulous food, and great information from Lauren about the area, it's history and highlights. Really enjoyed it!

Casey was an awesome guide. Our group had a great time, enjoying delicious food and learning about some of the history and culture of North Beach. I've lived in SF for 28 years and had a blast re-discovering the city.

BRIAN WAS AWESOME! He was fun, knowledgeable and catered our tour to my family's needs/wants. We toured North Shore and Chinatown and were so full of delicious bites by the end. Highly recommend this tour - on time, professional, interesting. We enjoyed every minute with Brian!

We had a perfect sunny day for the North Beach Italian food tour and ANGELA was our guide who nicely explained what we would taste and the history/culture of the restaurant. It was very tasty and interesting and would highly recommend it for all "foodies".

Loved Sidewalk Food Tours of San Francisco and will definitely go on one again! My husband had a wonderful time on our tour. Hampton is an awesome tour guide! I can't wait to go back again. It is comparable in cost as well. So much fun!

This was a great way to do a team outing in the City. The array of food sampling was great, and Brian gave us a great tour of the neighborhood with a depth of historical knowledge and fun anecdotes.

Our new favorite thing to do when visiting a city is go on a food tour. Great way to learn about the city and enjoy yummy food. Elaine was a great guide. She was knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. My husband, teenage kids and I really enjoyed our tour of Chinatown. Thanks Elaine!

“Highly recommend booking a progressive walking tour!”

“Best food tour I’ve ever gone on.”

Best food tour I’ve ever gone on. Nikki was the best tour guide, she made the tour. I loved the stories about North Beach, the foods, the ethic groups, and any other info I wanted. My first time in SF was so memorable and I plan to return and book the Mission food tour.

Aziza M. via Google North Beach Food Tour

“This was my first food tour and I loved the experience.”

This was my first food tour and loved the experience. I love to pick up bits of history as I travel and love food from places I cannot get at home. My rule for traveling – no food chains. This was a great way to experience both great food and a little unknown history. Our tour guide Margherita was great!!! Thanks for the experience.

Coffee and Cannoli in the Heart of North Beach

Your tour begins at the corner of Columbus and Green right in the center of North Beach, where you're friendly local guide will be waiting to welcome you to their favorite foodie neighborhood in San Francisco.

As the tour begins in the late morning, the first stop is an Italian tradition. In Italy, cappuccinos are enjoyed only in the morning and are served with a pastry to dip. Enjoy your house-roasted coffee with one of our all-time favorites, the cannoli, while you get to know your group and your guide explains some of the history of this charming little corner of San Francisco.

Chocolate Made the Italian Way

Next, you'll head to an award-winning artisan chocolatier to treat yourself to homemade fudges, chocolates, and candies, and you'll even get a peek behind the scenes to see the techniques that have won this North Beach favorite so many fans.

The chocolate-making tradition in San Francisco is renowned across the US. The most famous chocolate makers in the city are the Ghirardelli's whose former factory is now a city attraction. Though the mass-produced Ghirardelli bars moved across the bay in the 1960's, the artisan chocolatiers of San Francisco remain strong in their craft.

Delicious Bites at an Old School Italian Deli

Since the 19th century, this family-run staple of North Beach has been providing the city with delights straight from and inspired by Italy. Try homemade cured meats as well as tasty olives and street food classics such as Arancini (rice balls). Close your eyes and let your taste buds travel to Italy.

Did you know that Salami from Italy cannot be imported to the US? This means when you are enjoying an Italian sub, the salami is most likely American-made. This delicatessen in the center of North Beach has been producing delicious salamis since 1896, and you'll see just why they've stuck around this long!

Traditional-style Pizza and Pasta

When you think of great pizza, California isn't usually the place you picture eating it, but this San Francisco pizzeria brings the real taste of Italy to the Golden State. Using pizza making methods straight from the bay of Naples, you'll experience delicious wood-fired pizza that'll transport you back to the old country.

Next, you will try a delectable pasta spun directly in a wheel of parmigiano cheese for ultimate creaminess. Made right in front of you, it is like an Italian hibachi experience.

Explore the Hangouts of the "Beat Generation"

While Hemingway and Joyce spent their days at the Parisian cafes along the River Seine, the Beat Writers of the 1950's made San Francisco their home. See the coffee shops where writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsburg discussed the changing Post-War America. The "Beat Generation" influenced 20th century thought and literature right from its home in North Beach.

San Francisco Food Tour (And Discount Code!)

Gelato pops at Sixth Course, Mission District Food Tour, San Francisco

Want to know more about taking a San Francisco food tour? They’re the perfect way to explore the city’s buzzing foodie scene… even better when it’s with a local from the uber-cool Mission District! Find out more about my experience.

I met Sean from Avital Tours outside The Women’s Building in the heart of San Fran’s uber cool Mission District. Incase you didn’t know, it’s the place the hipsters hang out, with trendy bars and boutiques lining the streets, colourful murals adorning the walls, and of course – a top notch foodie scene. That’s what I was MOST interested in.

On this San Francisco food tour, we’d spent three hours enjoying some of the area’s most unique places to dine, while learning more about the district, the history and the art that makes it one of the city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods.

There are plenty of different San Francisco food tours, which will introduce you to various parts of the city via its cuisine. You can head to Chinatown for dim sum, explore the Ferry Building, or take a gourmet walk through North Beach.

I’d already explored Chinatown and North Beach (which is primarily Italian), but The Mission had a distinctly Mexican feel with plenty of no-frills taquerias. While many Mexicans had crossed over the border and set up shop, there were plenty more offerings from other cuisines waiting to be discovered.

So how did the buzz in the Mission District begin? When The Slanted Door restaurant opened its doors on Valencia Street, people started flocking there for the food. It wasn’t long before other places popped up. There’s Bi-Rite Market, which was launched with the intention of being a market that chefs would want to shop at. They wanted to create a community through their produce, and sure enough, it’s no standard supermarket. You’ll find the names of the farms on the produce, and staff who are really passionate about their work. Over the years, other great eateries have popped up including Tartine Bakery and Delfina, giving the district the nickname, the “Gourmet Ghetto”.

The Women’s Building was an impressive meeting point. Covered in an enormous mural entitled MaestraPeace, it was created by 7 female artists in 1994 to represent empowerment. It features images of feminine icons from history and fiction and was described as a “colorful work of art that sings to our community.” I stood in awe of the scale and loved the splash of colour it gave to the street.

Forget flights of wine, it was time to sit down for a cheese flight!  Mission Cheese has been serving an all-American menu of cheeses for 5 years – I was SO happy it was included on this San Francsico food tour as I LOVEEEEE cheese!

While I’m used to niche single-ingredient restaurants in London, I hadn’t come across somewhere like this. With cheese sourced from small dairies across 13 different states, it was wonderful to hear about a small restaurant committing to working with artisan producers. I loved the queso de mano from Haystack Mountain in Colorado, and although not a fan of lager, the rest of the group loved the black lager selected to pair with the cheese.

Mission Cheese, Mission District Food Tour, San Francisco

Passing the Vamos Gigantes mural, Sean, our San Francisco food tour guide explained how the mural traces the history of baseball in San Francisco, along with the sport’s place in building a community. While not having a clue about baseball, I liked the sentiment “All of us are equal, Some of us grow up to be Giants…”

Back to the food it was on to Hog and Rocks , a super trendy bar and restaurant specialising in ham and oysters. I was excited about this stop, as Sean had hyped how good the cocktails were! Along with a Hammersley oyster from Washington, a few slices of prosciutto from Iowa and a delicious rosemary flatbread, we were served Bourbon Buck Cocktails – a twist on the Moscow Mule, this time with bourbon, ginger and lime. All in all, this was a winning combo, and such a cool place to take in the atmosphere.

Hog & Rocks - a stop on our San Francisco food tour

I really enjoyed the relaxed pace of the tour and that the people running the restaurants gave some of their time – explaining their origins and more about the food. It gave a true flavour of the neighbourhood.

The Generator was one of my favourite murals  as it reminded me of Dr. Seuss! Sean explained what’s interesting about this mural is how it has been maintained and relatively untouched throughout the last 14 years, even surviving an energetic culture of tagging in San Francisco! Coming very soon, it’ll be getting a facelift by one of the original artists. Watch this space!

After the small courses to start, I was ready to get stuck into some heavier food. Time for our Mexican feast! There were plenty of places to choose from in the Mission District, but none with the history and prestige of Taqueria La Cumbre . Opened to feed hungry workers, offering cheap, filling food, the family restaurant has been around since 1967. Compared to the first few stops, this was a real, gritty local. Not trying to be glamorous or ‘hipster’ this was the real deal – somewhere the food speaks for itself.

As it was the home of the Mission Style Burrito – that’s what we had. It was delicious, containing grilled chicken, rice, beans and salad, all wrapped up in a flour tortilla. I could see why this particular burrito  had become the inspiration for burrito joints around the world, including one of my old London lunchtime haunts, Chipotle.

With a little space still, we headed to see Bridget at Sixth Course  for the final stop on our San Francisco food tour. The artisan chocolatier specialises in incredible handmade truffles, layered mousse cakes, tarts, and gelato pops made from scratch. I was fascinated by the truffle varieties on offer… everything from peanut butter and jelly, to earl grey tea and vindaloo! I couldn’t quite imagine how that would work but they looked lovely all the same!

Awesome desserts at Sixth Course, Mission District Food Tour, San Francisco

I opted for a chocolate and toffee gelato pop, which was absolutely yummy – especially when I sunk my teeth into the crunchy choc, toffee pieces!

Toffee, chocolate gelato pop at Awesome desserts at Sixth Course, San Francisco Food Tour

I’ve taken food tours all over the world – from Istanbul and Milan, to Barcelona and Helsinki. I’ve always found it a great way to learn about the local culture, while enjoying some of the top delicacies.

Sean was full of interesting stories, and I loved his passion for his backyard. While some food tours leave you overly full, and by stop 3 you’re worried about the quantity of food, Avital’s tour was focused on quality over quantity… meaning I still had space to go back to some of my favourite stops from the tour and sample a bit more!

The Mission District Culinary Experience with Avital Tours costs $84, plus an extra $18 for the alcohol parings.

You can get $5 off an Avital Tours experience in Los Angeles or San Francisco by quoting the discount code “WanderlustChloe” when booking.I’d love to experience a few more San Francisco food tours on my trips in the future! Let me know if you go – I’d love to hear your experience!

5 Day Itinerary in San Francisco - A Foodie's Tour

A 5-day tour of San Francisco and the best restaurants the city has to offer. San Francisco is truly a global city, with some of the best cuisine from around the world. Enjoy the original authentic Mission style burrito, Brittany inspired cuisine from a 3-Michelin starred chef, and a restaurant specializing in reinterpreting famous dishes from places around the globe. There is always something new and exciting to try in the city by the Bay.

1. Transported to Italy at Cotogna | 12 p.m.

490 Pacific Ave, San Francisco, CA 94133

Start the trip off with an Italian meal at Cotogna in Jackson Square. The more laid-back sister restaurant of next door 3-Michelin starred Quince, Cotogna still offers refined food in a cozy relaxed atmosphere. The pasta here is not to be missed, as well as anything from the large spit-fire grill at the back of the dining room. It's a perfect way to start off a trip in San Francisco.

2. Exploring Jackson Square, North Beach, & Chinatown | 1:30 p.m.

After lunch, walk down to Jackson Street where there are a few San Francisco-esque combination of retail stores including A.P.C., Fjallraven, and Allbirds. Then head a few blocks over to North Beach, which is the Italian neighborhood of San Francisco and is lined with restaurants and coffee shops.

Also nearby is Chinatown, which is one of the largest in the U.S. There are a lot of shops selling trinkets and small souvenirs. However, much more exciting is the abundance Asian food options here. Golden Gate Bakery ( Yelp ) is famous for having the best Hong Kong style egg tarts in the city. With its flaky crust and luscious filling, they are especially tasty when freshly baked out of the oven. For something more sweet, head to Matcha Cafe Maiko ( Yelp ) and enjoy their soft-serve matcha or hojicha sundaes.

3. Museums and Tea Gardens in Golden Gate Park | 2:30 p.m.

Public transportation is very limited and slow in San Francisco, especially in the northern part of the city. Take an Uber or Lyft, or rent a car as parking is generally more accessible than places like New York City. Head over to the west side of the city to Golden Gate Park, which is the largest green space in the city. Visit the Academy of Sciences, which focuses on natural history and includes an aquarium and planetarium. If you prefer more traditional art, the deYoung Museum is right across the plaza. There is an outlook at the top of the brown structure that is free to enter to get a clear unobstructed look of the city.

After the museums, head over to the Japanese Tea Garden which is right next door. You are instantly transported to a place of peace and serenity to quietly observe nature. There is also a small tea house in the garden that serves green tea and some small snacks, and can be a great break in the day from all the commotions of the city.

4. Mission Style Mexican Food at La Tacqueria | 7 p.m.

2889 Mission St, San Francisco, CA 94110

Drive over to the Mission district, which is now one of the most popular areas of the town with bars and restaurants lining the streets. While the neighborhood has changed quite a bit in the past decade, it still retains some of its tradition and is still the home to many great Mexican restaurants and the origins of the Mission style burrito that has made Chipotle famous.

There are tons of taco and burrito shops, but ask most San Franciscans and they will tell you that the best one is La Tacqueria. While definitely on the pricier side, with one fully loaded taco costing over $7, it hasn't stopped the lines from going out the door with locals and tourists. The meat is cooked in front of you and the ingredients are super fresh. Get the carne asada or the lengua if you're more adventurous. It's a no-frills place where you may have to share a table and won't want to stay long, but it's well worth going there for the amazing food.

5. SF Nightlife in the Mission | 8 p.m.

Stay in the Mission to check out the San Francisco nightlife and to go to the many bars that are around. ABV ( Yelp ) is a favorite of many, with great music and cocktails that are creative and taste incredible. The Beehive ( Yelp ) is another popular lounge that takes you back with the retro vibes and mirrors in the back room. The Mission neighborhood offers a lot of bars and late-night grub so definitely walk around and check out all the spots.

6. Brunch and Bread at Tartine Manufactory | 11 a.m.

595 Alabama St, San Francisco, CA 94110

Start the 2nd day right with brunch at the premier bakery in the Bay Area. The original spot was a small shop on a corner in the Mission, but they've now expanded throughout the city. Tartine Manufactory in the Dogpatch is their largest store and offers the most comfortable seating in a large and airy restored warehouse. The restaurant is famous for its bakery items, especially its morning bun, as well as its assortment of fresh baked bread. Here, they offer a number of sandwiches, tartines, and burgers on their signature country loaf.

6. Shopping at Union Square | 1 p.m.

Take the car and head over to Union Square, which is the heart of the shopping district of San Francisco. Flagship stores of all the major international brands line the streets around the central plaza from the most high-end luxury brands to the everyday retail stores. All the large department stores, such as Macy's, Saks, and Nordstrom are in the area, as well as the Westfield Shopping Center and San Francisco Shopping Center.

7. Afternoon Tea with a View at The Rotunda | 4 p.m.

150 Stockton St, San Francisco, CA 94108

Take a break from shopping to stop by the Neiman Marcus at the corners of Union Square and go up to the top level. Here, you'll find the restaurant Rotunda, which offers an expansive view overlooking all of Union Square, all while under an intricately designed glass dome. The decor is very refined and elegant, but also comfortable with plush banquettes. Order the afternoon tea with champagne and a selection of finger sandwiches and scones as you relax and people-watch from above.

8. Michelin Starred Copycat Dinner | 7 p.m.

151 3rd St, San Francisco, CA 94103

Walk a few blocks over to the Museum of Modern Art, where you will find its signature restaurant, In Situ. Opened by Corey Lee, the chef of 3 Michelin starred Benu, In Situ itself has also garnered 1 star. However, the restaurant is not stuffy at all, and actually has one of the most creative concepts that is befitting of its place in the MoMa. The menu is comprised of Corey Lee's interpretation of famous dishes from the most famous restaurants around the world. This includes dishes from places like Noma in Denmark and Tickets in Barcelona, and is a great way to either revisit the restaurants or to try them for the 1st time without the 10 hour flight. The dishes usually add a creative spin or reinterpretation of it to make it truly unique to In Situ.

9. Food Galore at Ferry Building | 10 a.m.

1 Ferry Bldg, San Francisco, CA 94111

Wake up and go over to the Ferry Building along the Embarcadero, which is one of the best places for foodies in the city. On the weekends, the building hosts a large farmers market both in front and behind the building with over 50 stalls dedicated to selling fresh produce and prepared foods. Inside the building, there are also permanent stalls opened everyday that fulfill all your culinary needs.

There are sit-down places like the Slanted Door specializing in Vietnamese cuisine or Hog Island, which sources local oysters from the North Bay. There are stores like Acme Bread for fresh baked goods, Cowgirl Creamery for cheese, and Dandelion Chocolate which is a local brand. Lastly, there is also a Blue Bottle for coffee and Humphrey Slocombe which offers local ice cream including its signature Secret Breakfast flavor. It's a great place to try a few items from each store to create your own meal.

10. Checking out Fillmore and Japantown | 1 p.m.

Head over to Fillmore Street, which has a number of retail stores with a bit more of a boutique feel to it with shops like Frame, rag & bone, and Joie. It is a good way to spend some time in the afternoon to explore a different side of SF.

Keep walking south along Fillmore St. and you'll eventually reach Japantown, which is a two-building shopping mall as well as a plaza across the street. The mall has tons of restaurants dedicated to Japanese cuisine like sushi, ramen, udon etc., as well as shops selling Japanese books, stationery, and confections. If you're in need of an afternoon pick-me-up, stop by Mochill ( Yelp ) inside the mall, which serves mochi donuts which are chewy and delicious. There is also a branch of Uji Time ( Yelp ), which serves taiyaki (fish-shaped pastry filled with red bean) topped with matcha or sesame soft serve ice cream.

11. Local Californian Cuisine at The Progress | 7 p.m.

1525 Fillmore St, San Francisco, CA 94115

Continuing walking south across the overhang bridge to the other side of Fillmore street and head to The Progress for dinner. Next door to, and opened by the same team behind Statebird Provisions, the menu is similar in having elevated local Californian cuisine but served in a relaxed and down-to-earth atmosphere. Get the signature half barbecue duck, as you order a number of dishes to share with your table family style. It is a signature San Francisco dining experience.

12. Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge for a Sushi Lunch | 12 p.m.

107 Caledonia St, Sausalito, CA 94965

Drive across the Golden Gate Bridge to head over to Marin County and the small town of Sausalito. There are a number of small local restaurants in the town, but one of the standouts is Sushi Ran. While the store was established over 30 years ago, it doesn't show its age at all in terms of its cooking and techniques. Serving fish delivered from Japan, the sushi and sashimi are amazingly fresh and is served in a clean zen-like decor. Lunch is quite a bit cheaper here with its lunch sets, but still top-notch food.

13. Coastal Town of Sausalito | 2 p.m.

Spend the afternoon in Sausalito, which is a waterfront town overlooking the San Francisco Bay. There are a number of small shops and art galleries that line the main street of the town. Grab an ice cream from Lapperts or just walk around the shore enjoying the view and the refreshing breeze.

14. Sunset at the Golden Gate Bridge | 5 p.m.

On the way back, take the last exit before the Golden Gate Bridge to drive up to the Golden Gate Overlook. Parking is a bit of a pain, especially on the weekends, but there are pockets of them along the drive up. When you reach the lookout, it offers gorgeous views of the San Francisco skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge. The best time to come is during sunsets to get the magnificent colored-sky view.

15. Italian Dinner at Flour + Water | 6 p.m.

2401 Harrison St, San Francisco, CA 94110

Drive back to the edge of Mission and Potrero Hill to get dinner at one of the most popular restaurants in town. Mixing Italian cuisine with Northern California ingredients and influences, this is a great place to go for a relaxed vibe with excellent food. The pastas are arguably the best in the city and are not to be missed. Just be sure to get a reservation way in advance.

16. Innovative Desserts at U: Dessert Story | 8 p.m.

3489 16th St, San Francisco, CA 94114

Before calling it a night, go over to the Castro to a small dessert shop that specializes in Asian fusion desserts. With items like mango sticky rice bingsoo, thai tea lava toast, and coconut pandan crepe cake, the shop puts a spin on traditional Asian desserts and impresses with both the visuals and the taste. Hang out in the neighborhood, which is one of the largest LGBT communities in the U.S., and has many bars open late into the night.

17. Zen Ambience at Stonemill Matcha | 11 a.m.

561 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94110

Start the last day in SF with a trip to the Mission District and go to Stonemill Matcha for a light brunch. The restaurant serves Japanese food that steers away from the classics like ramen and sushi. Instead, it serves items that you may more commonly find in Japan but less so in the U.S., such as pork katsu sandwiches, salmon onigiri, and milk toast with red bean. Like its name, it also serves a number of matcha drinks such as teas, lattes, and sodas. The decor is clean and modern with a light wood grain pattern.

15. Exploring Mission District | 1 p.m.

Walk around Mission District and see how different it is during the day versus the night when we were here on Day 1. There are a number of bookstores and vintage clothing stores, and Dolores Park is also nearby and is a popular hangout spot. For those looking for more eats, check out Bi-Rite Creamery ( Yelp ), which was probably one of the first shops which started the artisanal ice cream craze in SF. Also stop by Craftsman and Wolves ( Yelp ) which serves modern and creative cakes and bakery items. The cakes look incredible and taste just as great as they look.

16. Getting Boba in Hayes Valley | 4 p.m.

The next stop is Hayes Valley, which is another small neighborhood within SF that has a similar vibe to Fillmore. With a few boutique shops along with restaurants and bars, it's a fun place to hang out for the day. For more food, make a stop at Urban Ritual ( Yelp ) for some unique takes on boba or bubble tea. Aside from the traditional black tea, they have combinations here including matcha, creme brulee, and strawberry. For those looking for something more traditional, there is also a Boba Guys ( Yelp ), which had originally started in the Bay Area, a couple blocks away.

17. Petit Crenn | 7 p.m.

609 Hayes St, San Francisco, CA 94102

For dinner, and the last stop of our 5 day trip, go to Petit Crenn, which is the more approachable sister restaurant to the 3-Michelin starred Atelier Crenn. It is a small and cozy place which serves a tasting menu that changes according to what is seasonal. The food is innovative, incredibly delicious, and also beautifully prepared. It is a great way to get a taste of Dominique Crenn's cooking, who is the only 3 starred female chef in the US. The food is inspired by the food she had growing up in Brittany, France. The meal is a great way to end the night and the tour of San Francisco.

An amazing tour! Great food! The tour guide, Nikki, was wonderful with a great knowledge of the area, history, and the food. Each place offered a wonderful sampling of their food in an authentic atmosphere. Top notch service at the restaurants and from the avital tour guide.

Photo of Kristi S.

A fun way to spend an evening in SF! We had the best evening with our guide , Nikki, who introduced us to four fabulous restaurants. Historical stories of the city combined with introductions to chefs, excellent food and conversation. If you want something different to do instead of a three hour dinner sitting in one place this is the experience you want to book!

Photo of Yang W.

I have one suggestion for the tour guide pitch that I think you should consider. The narrative suggesting that the Italian district being placed next to Chinatown in major cities was due to the belief that Italians and Chinese were considered 'low and dirty' is inappropriate. Considering the possibility of having Chinese or Italian visitors in your group, it's crucial to be mindful of how this narrative might make them feel.

Hi, Yang - We appreciate your feedback and sincerely apologize if any part of the narrative made you uncomfortable. Your perspective is invaluable to us, and we want to ensure that everyone feels welcome and respected during our tours. We will be reviewing our story script to ensure it reflects the respect and consideration we hold for all our tour guests and community partners. One of our core values is Improve Continuously. Your feedback is instrumental in helping us do just that. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention and we hope you will consider joining us again.

38 Fun Things to Do in Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco

fun things to do in Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco

  • 4 Pinterest

The West Coast’s most immediately recognizable city thanks to its striking Golden Gate Bridge (sorry, Los Angeles, not this time), San Francisco is a treasure trove of activity.

Every nook and cranny of the City by the Bay dishes up something different; so much so that the Northern Californian epicenter has become one of the most multi-cultural urban hubs in the US. From Little Italy and Chinatown to Silicon Valley, Alcatraz and Sausalito, the city’s diversity is a major draw.

And with so many fun things to do in San Francisco — sports, food, art, history, architecture, music, and day trip options aplenty (Muir Wood and Yosemite) — it’s no wonder over 21 million tourists make the journey here every year.

But if we look beyond the clanking downtown streetcars, the hilly city streets, and the iconic bridge, there’s one particular area that has attracted first and fiftieth-time visitors for decades. Yep, Fisherman’s Wharf – the vibrant waterfront district that is as much a cultural centerpiece of the city as its more famous attractions.

Stuffed with seafood restaurants, souvenir shops and tourist-friendly activities, not to mention a handful of sea lions known to frequent nearby Pier 39, there are more than enough things to do in Fisherman’s Wharf to keep you entertained for days on end.

From strolling through the famous San Francisco Cannery to walking in Al Capone’s footsteps with a historical tour of Alcatraz, to the USS Pampanito and the slew of tantalizing eateries, let’s unpack the most exciting activities that make Fisherman’s Wharf one of San Francisco’s most coveted destinations.

Fisherman’s Wharf isn’t just a spot – it’s an adventure. And we’re about to go exploring.

Want to dive straight in? Browse our catalog now!

1 – Witness California’s underwater world at the Aquarium of the Bay

Aquarium of the Bay, Fisherman's Wharf

A longstanding family favorite, the Aquarium of the Bay has been wowing visitors of all ages since it opened its doors back in 1996. As the stomping ground for over 20,000 aquatic animals — sea stars, rays, sharks, octopi, jellyfish, turtles, and more colorful fish than you could possibly count — this Pier 39 staple combines a level of entertainment and education that few other tourist attractions in San Francisco can match.

As you make your way around the Smithsonian-affiliated aquarium, meeting 200+ animal species along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of sea creatures, from mighty sevengill sharks to friendly bat rays. And if you’re brave enough, you can even touch them in the Touchpools or Bay Lab zones!

The Beauties of the Bay zone is always a hit. Here, the colors come out to play; thanks to the bright orange Garibaldi (the California State Marine Fish), green Moray Eels, the Eastern Pacific Red Octopus, and all sorts of vibrant rockfish.

The Sharks of Alcatraz Tunnel and the Near Shore Tunnel show off some of the region-specific wildlife, but it’s often the River Otters gallery that steals the show.

Hot tip: To save a few bucks, consider buying the Go City San Francisco Explorer Pass , which provides discounted access to a range of top attractions, including the Aquarium of the Bay.

2 – Race against the clock at The Escape Game

The Escape Game, Fisherman's Wharf

Consider yourself somewhat of a detective-to-be? The next Sherlock Holmes, perhaps? Well, now’s your chance to prove it. The Escape Game SF , which sits on Jefferson Street right next to Madame Tussauds (see #6), boasts a half-dozen thrilling, interactive adventures that’ll put your problem-solving skills to the test.

Perfect for groups and couples alike, this popular Fisherman’s Wharf attraction invites you to team up, crack codes, find hidden objects, solve puzzles, and do whatever it takes to escape the themed rooms before the time is up.

Take your pick from five different games: Timeliner, The Depths, Prison Break, Gold Rush, and Special Ops.

In Timeliner, you’ll step aboard a time-traveling train, traveling from the Jurassic era to the Medieval era and everything in between – all in the name of saving the future. On The Depths, you’ll make your way underwater in a submarine to investigate an abandoned laboratory and try to recover a missing scientist; while Gold Rush takes you back to the prospecting days of 1800s California.

Special Ops is all about saving the day when things go awry in a local spice market, but it’s often the Prison Break game that’s most popular — themed like Alcatraz, you’ll have exactly one hour to break out of the cell and make your escape to a life of freedom.

So, think you’ve got what it takes to crack the codes and make it out in time? There’s only one way to find out…

  • escape rooms in Fisherman’s Wharf

3 – Check out the fascinating and free Musée Mécanique

Musée Mécanique, Fisherman's Wharf

While the de Young Museum, The Walt Disney Family Museum, and the SFMOMA X often steal the spotlight, one of the best museums in San Francisco lies right here, flying under the radar in Fisherman’s Wharf.

This is undoubtedly one of the top things to do in Fisherman’s Wharf for enthusiasts of vintage games and historical artifacts.

Tucked away over at Pier 45, right next to the USS Pampanito Museum and Memorial, the Musée Mécanique is a vintage gamer’s Heaven on Earth. This charming museum is a treasure trove of old-school mechanical wonders, sporting an interactive collection of coin-operated games, rare musical instruments, and nostalgic fortune tellers machines, many of which date back to the early 20th century.

As you wander around the floor, you’ll find old jukeboxes, hand-cranked music boxes, modern video game arcade machines, and more — and for all of you San Francisco natives, some of the old-school machines from Playland at the Beach, Sutro Baths, and the Cliff House have found a second home here. All up, the museum houses over 300 unique artifacts, making it one of the world’s largest collections of arcade artifacts.

The best part? Entry to the museum is free! Just bring along a pocketful of coins if you want to try out the different games.

4 – Zoom around the city on a GoCar tour

GoCar tour in Fisherman's Wharf

If you’re fed up with walking around San Francisco’s streets – given it’s the second hilliest city in the world after La Paz, we won’t blame you – then why not get behind the wheel and take a leisurely GoCar tour instead?

This ingenious concept sees visitors strapped into their own three-wheeled, two-seater, bright yellow GoCar – complete with GPS to make your life easy.

As you drive through the city, your onboard guide will take you to some of the city’s main hotspots, sharing plenty of fascinating tidbits about them along the way.

Take your pick from Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito GoCar tours, San Francisco City streets GoCar tours, both of which last a couple of hours, or longer full-day experiences that take you all over town, from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Presidio, Coit Tower, Chinatown, Lombard Street, Ocean Beach, and Golden Gate Park, to name a few.

Hot tip: If you book your tour in advance, you can actually customize your own route, choosing from over 50 points of interest around the city.

  • GoCar tours in San Francisco

5 – Make your way to the Sea Lion Viewing Area at Pier 39

Sea Lion Viewing Area at Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf

Back in 1989, a colony of sea lions made Pier 39 their home, and – to both the surprise of locals and the delight of tourists – they’ve been here ever since.

Head to the Sea Lion Viewing Area at Pier 39 and you’ll be able to see literally hundreds of these gentle, rumbling (admittedly, smelly) creatures up close — and seeing as that they can weigh up to 850 pounds (386 kilograms), they’ll be impossible to miss.

Over time, however, the Pier has evolved into much more than just a hangout for the blubbery beasts. Now, thanks to The Marine Mammal Center, it’s also an educational hub. Inside the center, staff and volunteers are on hand to share insights about the sea lions’ natural environment, their quirky behaviors, the reasons why they chose to settle in the middle of a thriving city, and plenty more.

If you want to see how many sea lions are there on any given day, use Pier 39’s live sea lion cam to check out the action before you make the trip.

Traveling in 2024? A brand new installation called The Sea Lion Spot will soon be open. Venturing beneath the surface, it will provide a fascinating new perspective on the animals, with multi-sensory exhibits and interactive touchscreens to boot. So keep an eye out on the Marine Mammal Center website to see when it opens.

6 – Meet your heroes (almost) at Madame Tussauds

Madame Tussauds, Fisherman's Wharf

The closest you’ll get to rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s most famous faces, Madame Tussauds on the shores of the bay is guaranteed to be a hit with all ages. With wax figures of everyone from Taylor Swift to Elvis and Leonardo DiCaprio, you’re sure to spot a few familiar faces.

In total, more than 100 wax figures have been carefully constructed to look as life-like as possible, including athletes (like Tom Brady, Steph Curry and Lionel Messi), leaders (Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln, Steve Jobs), music icons (Queen Bey, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Rihanna) and Hollywood royalty (Tom Hanks, Jennifer Aniston, Peter Dinklage, and many more).

And if the thought of posing for selfies with A-listers isn’t exciting enough, they’ve also got interactive exhibits where you can get hands-on with some of their most famous characters — ride a bike into the sky with E.T, go toe to toe with Muhammad Ali, or sing your heart out with Adele.

Even though Madame Tussauds is a worldwide institution, none of the other venues can claim to offer the Spirit of San Francisco zone. Here, you can mingle with SF locals, from the late, great Robin Williams to Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and Francis Ford Coppola, and snap pics in front of pint-sized Golden Gate landmarks.

7 – Witness stunning Bay views with a boat tour

boat tour from Fisherman's Wharf

With a moniker like Fisherman’s Wharf, it would be sacrilege not to explore the bay by boat. Luckily for us, there’s a smorgasbord of tours to choose from that provide a fresh perspective on some of San Francisco’s most iconic attractions.

For architecture buffs, the bridge-themed cruise offers an afternoon of sightseeing and history. You’ll sail under The Golden Gate and Bay bridges, with top-notch views of Alcatraz Island and the Downtown skyline.

If you’re more into relaxation and romance, then why not opt for a sunset sail? Heading out on the bay just before dusk, you’ll be able to catch the city as it transitions from day to night, and see exactly where the Golden Gate Bridge gets its name.

Prefer something a little more adventurous? Then a speedboat ride – ideal for summer – is the perfect option. With the wind in your hair and the water splashing around you, you’ll see the sights of San Francisco in record time.

Throw in brunch cruises, Alcatraz and history-themed sails, multi-day yacht tours, and even the chance to rent your own private vessel, and it’s clear you won’t be running out of options any time soon.

8 – Join one of the locally-led walking tours

walking tours in Fisherman's Wharf

Since Fisherman’s Wharf is a relatively small area, so long as you’re sporting a pair of comfy shoes, it makes for the ideal destination for an informative walking tour. Led by friendly, in-the-know guides, you’ll be able to learn more about the history and culture of this colorful district without having to worry about what to see – since they’ll make sure you don’t miss a thing.

While every on-foot adventure is a little different (depending on your guide and what’s happening on any given day), you can expect most Fisherman’s Wharf walking tours to make their way down Jefferson Street, and take in sights like Ghirardelli Square, The Cannery, Aquatic Park, Pier 39 and the SS Jeremiah O’Brien. All the while, your guide will share all kinds of fascinating facts about the district’s (and the city’s) past.

Of course, no walking tour would be complete without a stop at Boudin Bakery – the home of San Francisco’s iconic sourdough bread – and the Fisherman’s Wharf Sign, where you can snap one of the most sought-after photos in the city.

Looking for something a little different? For thirsty travelers, there’s the craft beer walking tour which includes some of the best craft breweries in Fisherman’s Wharf. Or, for penny pinchers, you can grab a value-packed combination ticket that adds on an Alcatraz visit or a Golden Gate Bay cruise.

9 – Be confused and delighted at Ripley’s Believe It or Not!

Ripley's Believe It or Not!, Fisherman's Wharf

Overflowing with oddities, optical illusion, and over 450 weird and wonderful artifacts, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! is a great place to while away an hour or two on a rainy day – especially if you’ve got kids in tow.

Located in the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf at Pier 39, this marvelous, albeit head-scratching museum features dozens of interactive exhibits designed to spark imagination and challenge perception. From shrunken heads and a two-headed calf to giant dinosaurs made out of metal, a wooly mammoth made of rubber, a matchstick model of the space shuttle Columbia, and dozens of hands-on sensory experiences, Ripley’s is sure to provide plenty of fuel for conversation.

While you’re there: In addition to the museum, the venue is also home to Ripley’s Marvelous Mirror Maze. With over 100 mirrors, distracting LED lighting and surround sound, it won’t be as easy as you may think to make it through this mind-bending wonderland.

10 – Step onto a WWII-era ship: the SS Jeremiah O’Brien

SS Jeremiah O'Brien, Fisherman's Wharf

Stretching a whopping 441 feet long (exactly half the length of the Titanic), the SS Jeremiah O’Brien — docked at Pier 35 on the Embarcadero — is one of the last remaining Liberty ships from the World War II era. Remarkably, 2,710 Liberty ships were built and launched during World War II, and this is one of just two that still stands.

But it’s not just for show; this living piece of history welcomes visitors to step aboard and experience what life at sea was like during wartime (albeit a scaled-back version).

Ticket in hand (which costs about US$20 for adults), you’ll get to wander around the decks, climb the ladders, see the living quarters and the engine room, and learn all about the vital roles that the Jeremiah O’Brien – and Liberty ships in general – played during the war.

Visiting during October? Don’t miss Fleet Week, which features fighter jet air shows and cruises; or the Brew on the Bay event, during which you can sample dozens of craft beers, explore the decks and soak up unbeatable views of the skyline.

11 – Explore lesser-known neighborhoods with one of the city’s bike tours

bike tours from Fisherman's Wharf

With so much to see in San Francisco, it’s near impossible to take in all of the city on foot (because it’s too big) and by car (because then you miss all the hidden gems). Enter the bike tour — a way to explore every corner of San Francisco’s beautiful streets while burning plenty of calories along the way.

We know what you’re thinking – but don’t worry, there are electric bike tours available too, so you won’t have to worry about those dramatically steep hills!

A lot of the bike tours in San Francisco actually start right here, in Fisherman’s Wharf. From here, the city’s your oyster. Some excursions pedal their way to the most iconic landmarks (Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito, Little Italy, Presidio National Park), while others take a more adventurous route and crisscross their way through the city’s many hidden neighborhoods and landmarks (Haight-Ashbury, the Painted Ladies, and Crissy Field, to name a few).

Take your pick from guided tours, during which a San Franciscan will fill you in on the city’s history and culture; or opt for a self-guided tour, which gives you maximum freedom to explore at your own pace and is considered one of the top things to do in San Francisco for couples . Either way, the views of the bay are unbeatable, and you’ll feel worlds away from the tourist crowds.

12 – See what submarine life is like on the USS Pampanito Museum and Memorial

USS Pampanito Museum and Memorial, Fisherman's Wharf

If you’ve already checked out the SS Jeremiah O’Brien (see #10) and are still itching for more WWII history, you’ll be pleased to know that the USS Pampanito Museum and Memorial is just a stone’s throw away.

This $6 million (at the time) submarine was first launched in 1943 (the peak of WWII), and played a significant role in the Allied victory, making six patrols of the Pacific in total.

Now a National Historic Landmark, inside its decks, you can explore multiple levels of interactive exhibits, see the compartments, the narrow halls, the weaponry on the main deck, and plenty more. Given that the submarine is virtually as she was in 1945 (with the exception of the hatch and ladders used by tourists), it’s certainly one of the most insightful things to do in Fisherman’s Wharf.

Make sure you check out the audio tour as well – lasting around 40 minutes and rolling back the curtain on the ship’s involvement in the war, it’ll make your experience all the more immersive, informative, and enjoyable.

The Pampanito is open from 10 AM to 6 PM, 7 days a week, making it an easy addition to any day of Fishman’s Wharf sightseeing.

13 – Cross the bay to the infamous Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island tour from Fisherman's Wharf

It was once the home of the world’s most notorious prison. It has housed some of America’s most notorious criminals, including Al “Scarface” Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and it retains its eerie mystique to this day. It’s one of the best places to visit in San Francisco , and it’s located just off of Fisherman’s Wharf.

Yes, we’re talking about the legendary Alcatraz Island — a Civil War fort turned military prison turned federal penitentiary… turned tourist attraction.

Though the prison ceased operations in 1963, today you can jump on a boat from Pier 33 and take a 15-20 minute ride out to the island. Once you set foot on the island, you can explore the prison yard, the cell blocks, the dining hall, and more, hearing stories of the island’s most famous inmates along the way – including the quartet that infamously escaped back in 1962 — thanks to the incredibly detailed audio guide.

Alcatraz is open daily (except for Christmas Day) and you can grab Alcatraz last minute tickets online to potentially save a few dollars compared to the regular Alcatraz Island tickets price .

Looking for a more comprehensive experience? Some of the best Alcatraz Island tours combine the storied island with other top-rated activities, like a seaplane flight + Alcatraz cruise combo, Alcatraz ticket + walking craft beer tour, or the popular “Jail and Sail” Alcatraz tour + twilight bay cruise option.

San Francisco Carousel, Fisherman's Wharf

With over 50 intricately detailed animals to choose from, your little ones (and the kids at heart) can hop on board and take a spin around this vintage carousel ride that transports both young and old to a bygone era.

Look closely and you’ll notice that this is no ordinary Merry-Go-Round — it’s detailed with intricate hand-painted panels of famous San Fran landmarks; the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, and Lombard Street, to name a few. Rides last for about three minutes, during which traditional organ music plays in the background, enhancing the overall nostalgic experience.

Plus, since it costs just $3 per ride (or $5 for 2 rides), it sells itself as one most affordable things to do in San Francisco with kids .

While you’re there: Right around the corner you’ll find the colony of sea lions that have made Pier 39 their home. This is a great spot to take the kids and show them some of San Francisco’s unique wildlife.

15 – Marvel at historic ships at Hyde Street Pier

Hyde Street Pier, Fisherman's Wharf

Maritime enthusiasts, this one has your name all over it.

As part of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park (San Francisco Maritime Museum), this historic pier is a living museum that preserves the city’s maritime heritage.

Wander around the area and you’ll discover a collection of historic ships and vessels, each with its own captivating story. Notably, the Balclutha, an 1886 square-rigged sailing ship, stands as a testament to the era of tall ships and global maritime trade.

But there’s also the Eureka steamboat, Eppleton Hall tugboat, Hercules Tugboat, and the Alma Scow Schooner.

And while they’re certainly fascinating to view from afar, to really appreciate them, you’ll want to hop on board and explore them up close as part of a guided tour.

While you’re there: You’ll find the Hyde Street Pier toward the western end of Fisherman’s Wharf, not too far from the Cartoon Art Museum, so why not check off the bucket list back to back?

16 – Embark on an insightful cable car tour

cable car tour in Fisherman's Wharf

As iconic as the city itself, there’s nothing quite like taking a cable car – otherwise known as a streetcar – ride through the streets of San Francisco.

With three distinct routes – the Powell-Hyde Line, the Powell-Mason Line, and the California/Van Ness Street Cable Car Line – you’ll be able to explore some of the city’s most bustling neighborhoods and attractions, from Nob Hill and Union Square to Chinatown and, of course, Fisherman’s Wharf, where you’ll find the Powell & Hyde Cable Car Turntable.

If you jump on the latter, you’ll be taken up the hill toward Nob Hill, where you can take stunning pictures of the city skyline. Better yet, why not join an official cable car tour and learn more about the city’s history, landmarks, and sights along the way?

Ghirardelli Chocolate, Fisherman's Wharf

Sweet tooths, rejoice!

The Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience at Fisherman’s Wharf is a tantalizing, cocoa-y ode to one of the country’s oldest chocolate makers. You can take part in several interactive experiences, from learning about the chocolate-making process to tasting a handful of flavors (if you ask nicely), or putting together your own take-out bag from the world’s largest Pick & Mix. Either way, you’re bound to leave with a smile on your face and a few delicious treats in hand.

If you’re not sure what to indulge in, look no further than the Ghirardelli World-Famous Hot Fudge Sundae – the most popular of its 15 different varieties

You’ll find this iconic locale in the eponymous Ghirardelli Square, where plenty more shops, restaurants, and bars (including the San Francisco Brewing Company) await. Contrary to most visitors’ first thought, however, it’s not actually one venue; in fact, three Ghirardelli locations are spread throughout the square: The Original Ghirardelli Ice Cream and Chocolate Shop, the Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience, and Ghirardelli On-The-Go.

18 – Play a SF-themed round at Subpar Miniature Golf

Subpar Miniature Golf, Fisherman's Wharf

If you’re looking for a dose of fun and friendly competition, Subpar Miniature Golf at Ghirardelli Square provides a lighthearted escape.

This quirky and creatively designed miniature golf course is truly one of a kind; you won’t find typical, flat-grass carpets or windmills here. Instead, you’ll find yourself playing around a shrunken-down version of San Francisco!

All up, there are 18 imaginative holes inspired by iconic City by the Bay landmarks — the Painted Ladies, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Lombard Street, and Millennium Tower, to name a handful.

It’s a delightful blend of entertainment and sightseeing that promises laughter and memorable moments. Plus, with its own menu of craft beers (ranging from blood orange IPAs to hefeweizen and the popular Alcatraz Amber), it’s certainly not just a place for kids and families!

Heavily educational as well, the bus comes with a recorded audio tour that will provide you with plenty of facts and anecdotes about the city’s history, architecture, and culture as you roll between neighborhoods.

Other options: While the hop-on-hop-off tourist bus is the most popular choice, it’s not the only one. You can also sign up for a Big Bus Muir Woods Tour, a Silicon Valley Campus Hop tour, or (for all you bargain hunters) even an Alcatraz + Hop-on Hop-off Bus combo tour.

And you can guarantee that no two visits will be the same —The Cartoon Art Museum debuts two major new exhibitions every 3-4 months, which means there’s also something fresh to check out.

21 – Have a picnic or take a dip at Aquatic Park Cove

Aquatic Park Cove, San Francisco

Sitting on the grounds of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park (next to Hyde Street Pier ships – see #15), Aquatic Park Cove beckons both locals and visitors seeking a refreshing escape thanks to its crescent-shaped beach and calm waters.

In the summertime, the tranquil waters are popular for swimming and kayaking (and even cold-water plunges for the brave souls in the winter), but the riverside park dishes up top-notch views of the Bay and the skyline (and Alcatraz Island) year-round.

With plenty of grassy areas, as well as BBQ facilities, Aquatic Park Cove is also a great spot for an outdoor lunch. But if the weather isn’t too kind, a slew of restaurants (try Capurro’s or Blue Mermaid), cafes, and bars also sit within walking distance.

Standing tall since 1914, the ferry arch is a great spot to appreciate Fisherman’s Wharf maritime history. This iconic piece of architecture was once used as an entry point for ferries headed to and from the harbor, but today stands as a symbol of San Francisco’s past.

Legend has it that if you attach a lock on the nearby fence, and throw the key in the bay, you’re destined to return another time.

Either way, after taking a couple of snaps, take some time to wander around the area. The Pier 41 Wooden Viewing Pier, in particular, is a great spot to take in the surrounding waterfront scenery.

Photography tip: Depending on the angle of your photo, the Arch can act as a natural frame for either Alcatraz or the SS Jeremiah O’Brien.

The I Left My Heart in San Francisco heart-balloon mural by Brian Huber is a crowd favorite, but for that quintessential tourist snap, nothing beats the Greetings from San Francisco mural.

Wall art aside, if you crank your neck skyward, you’ll see where this alley takes its title from – an array of umbrellas painstakingly hung across the street.

32 – Shop till you drop at The Cannery

The Cannery, Fisherman's Wharf

Once a canning factory for Del Monte (a fruit processing company), this historic waterfront institution has been around for over 125 years. And while its purpose has shifted over the decades, it remains an iconic part of the Wharf landscape.

Today, The Cannery is a modern mall that celebrates San Francisco’s past (there are plenty of artifacts on display), with chic boutiques and a handful of restaurants and cafés. All up, some 30 different retailers reside within the Cannery, including local favorites like Jack’s Cannery Bar and Oyster Pier.

If you’re after a treat, pop into The Waterfront Bakery for some gourmet cookies or European pastries. The Cable Car Store is the go-to for San Fran-themed souvenirs, while the Winery Collective next door to the courtyard has Napa, Sonoma, or even Santa Barbara blends you can taste.

33 – Drink your way through the area’s best bars

best bars in Fisherman's Wharf

You’re on vacation after all, so why not have a few drinks and let your hair down? While Valencia Street, Polk Street, Union Street, and the Columbus and Broadway Square have long been the go-to for San Francisco’s best bars, Fisherman’s Wharf has a few hidden gems worth checking out.

For some classic Irish pub vibes, there’s The Buena Vista Cafe  on Hyde St; it famously claims to have invented the famous ‘Irish coffee’ cocktail back in 1952. Besides the vast menu of beers, spirits, and whiskeys, you can also dig into a hearty variety of meals – from crab omelets to the melt-in-your-mouth whiskey and bread pudding.

For a more casual tipple, look no further than the Wipeout Bar & Grill  at Pier 39. With a relaxed sports bar-like atmosphere and plenty of beers on tap (and a menu of 9” personal pizzas for when you get peckish), this is the perfect place to cheer on your favorite team, drink in hand.

Certainly more of a local dive bar than a tourist-trodden haunt, the Red Jack Saloon is an authentic old-school saloon that brings East Coast hospitality over to the West, with Red Sox and Patriots games often shown on the TVs. Despite being just a short walk from Fisherman’s Wharf, you won’t too many crowds.

Still thirsty? Sweetie’s Art Bar, the Hard Rock Cafe and the sports-bar-like Brick & Beam each have their own unique allure, with a bounty of drinks to boot.

34 – Jump on the ferry to Angel Island State Park

Angel Island State Park tour from Fisherman's Wharf

A short ferry ride away, Angel Island State Park is a peaceful, tree-encased island rich in immigration history (dubbed the Ellis Island of the West) that is perfect for a day of slow-paced exploring. With top-notch views of San Francisco, Marin County, and the East Bay, it’s a great place to take in the sights.

Once on the island, you can explore some of its historic sites – from the old military bunkers at Fort McDowell to former Chinese detention camps, to the Angel Island Immigration Museum – or simply stretch the legs with a walk or bike ride around the 5-mile Paved Perimeter Road.

For avid hikers, the Lands End trail dishes up sublime coastal views, while the Historical Route and the Ridge Trail both climax at the summit of Mount Livermore.

How to get here: Daily ferries (the Golden Gate Ferry) run from Pier 41 at Fisherman’s Wharf. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes and tickets cost around US$15 for adults, US$8 for concessions, and are free for kids under 4.

35 – Drive down the oh-so-twisty Lombard Street

Lombard Street, San Francisco

Officially known as the “World’s Crookedest Street”, Lombard Street is one of San Francisco’s top tourist attractions . With a series of eight sharp hairpin turns, this slithering street on Russian Hill is one of the steepest in the city (hence the turns), making it a great place to take in the scenery and snap a few cliché tourist photos.

Of course, the best views of Lombard Street are from the top, at the corner of Hyde Street. Plus, being just a 10-minute walk from Fisherman’s Wharf, it’s easy to tack onto your day of waterfront sightseeing.

Take note: If you’re brave enough to drive down it, just be mindful that it’s one-way (top-down).

36 – Inject some culture into your trip at the several Fisherman’s Wharf art galleries

art galleries in Fisherman's Wharf

Art aficionados, take note:

While Fisherman’s Wharf might be relatively small in size, it’s got a big personality when it comes to all things art.

Showcasing a range of styles from traditional San Francisco and Native American artwork to more contemporary pieces by French masters and American up-and-comers, the waterfront neighborhood has galleries galore — more than half a dozen are dotted all around the streets, each welcoming you in for a half-hour or so of respite on a rainy day.

Sitting within about 50 yards of one another, you’ll find the Zea Gallery , the ZK Gallery , the Da De Art Gallery and Eden Fine Art. Each of these dives into a few different genres of artwork, with friendly staff on hand to explain more about the different works, and a handful of pieces on sale too – if you fancy a unique San Fran souvenir.

While you’ll have to walk a few minutes down the road, the Academy of Art University Galleries in the historic Cannery Building (see #32) is a renowned institution certainly worth checking out. One of the University’s four galleries scattered across the city, this is one totally free to visit, and is known for showing off outside-of-the-box paintings, textiles, sculptures and print works. Plus, with new exhibits opening up on the first Thursday of every month, there’s always something new and exciting to uncover.

And if you’re still searching for that extra dose of culture, The Dennis Rae Fine Art venue and the Chloe Gallery round out the list.

Keep in mind: The Franklin Bowles Gallery was a beloved institution but recently closed it doors, so don’t go hunting for it.

37 – Enjoy some live music at Pier 35

live music at Pier 35, Fisherman's Wharf

A popular local events space, Pier 35 is a wonderful spot to check out live music, watch open-air movie screenings and sip on craft beers against the backdrop of San Francisco Bay.

The pier’s calendar of events changes regularly – from music festivals to pop-up markets, Oktoberfest celebrations, and concerts of every genre.

Events aside, this Embarcadero staple has been welcoming locals and tourists alike since 1914, so you’re sure to learn a bit of history here, too.

38 – Stroll along the Embarcadero

Embarcadero, San Francisco

No trip to Fisherman’s Wharf would be complete without a leisurely stroll down San Francisco’s iconic waterfront promenade.

The Embarcadero, which stretches for over 3 miles, is a great way to take in the stunning San Francisco Bay views and the city skyline. You can pass by landmarks like Pier 39, Aquatic Park, Ghirardelli Square and Coit Tower as you make your way along the waterfront path.

The Embarcadero is also home to the beautiful Ferry Building Marketplace – an iconic 1898 building that plays host to some 50 different local food stalls, shops and eateries.

Where to stay in Fisherman’s Wharf?

With so many things to do in Fisherman’s Wharf, you’ll probably want to stay a night or two.

Thankfully, it’s not just restaurants and tourist attractions here; Fisherman’s Wharf is home to some of the city’s oldest and best hotels – and there are plenty of options whatever your budget:

For an unforgettable boutique experience, consider booking into the 4.5-star Argonaut Hotel on Jefferson St. Its luxe rooms come with breathtaking views of the bay, while it’s conveniently located close to all the iconic Fisherman’s Wharf sights. But for the ultimate in high-end luxury, you can’t go past the 5-star Fairmont Heritage Place at Ghirardelli Square.

You can also set your sights on the less-pricey Hotel Zephyr – a quirky hotel near Pier 39 that puts you at the doorstep of all the local attractions. Rooms are fun and modern; think nautical-themed decor and plenty of cool amenities. For a similar level of style, without all the nautical oddities, Hotel Zoe boasts excellent reviews and it’s right next door.

Pinching pennies? Just around the corner is The Wharf Inn . It’s close to Pier 39 and the Aquarium of the Bay and, most importantly, it won’t break the bank. Or, if you’re more of a social hostel person, the HI San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf Hostel in Great Meadow Park is a solid option.

Prefer to stay in a different neighborhood that’s within walking distance of Fisherman’s Wharf? Then look no further than the Queen Anne Hotel , the Fairmont San Francisco , or the Hilton Union Square .

No matter what type of lodging you’re looking for, Fisherman’s Wharf and its surrounding neighborhoods have plenty of options to choose from. Enjoy your stay!

Restaurants, food and drink | ouch celebrate poky, pointy sea creatures at mendocino’s urchin fest, from june 7-16, the festival will fete urchins with nature walks and uni-centric restaurant specials..

The third annual Urchin Fest takes place June 7-16, 2024, in Mendocino County, featuring educational events and restaurant specials.

The festival kicks off June 7 and runs through June 16 with nature walks, a harbor tour of fishing vessels and an “urchin ranch” and many restaurant specials, including one that pairs high-end Japanese whiskey with creamy uni.

Purple sea urchins are ubiquitous off the coast of Northern California. When their numbers get out of control, they can pose a severe threat to kelp forests, which they love to munch. Otherwise, they can be a toothsome addition to all sorts of dishes from pasta to toast to sushi. (Or a pain in your butt — sometimes literally — if you happen to bump into one in the water.)

You can find all the details at Urchinfest.com , but here’s a short list of what’s going on from that site and VisitMendocino.com . Note that while some events are free, others require tickets or fees:

“Take a low-tide seaweed walk at MacKerricher State Park with Josie Iselin, Larry Knowles and Julie Drucker. These artist-educators will share their knowledge and experience in seaweed gathering and give an in-depth understanding of the delicate intertidal ecosystem. Sign up for this morning walk from 7:00-9:30 a.m.” Details: Capacity: 25. Fee: $35 (includes Seaweed Science Social in the afternoon).

“DIVE INTO SCIENCE FIELD SESSIONS WITH REEF CHECK. Reef Check trains citizen science divers to conduct long-term monitoring surveys of Kelp Forests. Join us at Caspar Beach June 8-9th to watch our team at work! We will also be working with our most recent Dive into Science Open Water graduates to provide proficiency dives so they continue their training and become Reef Check divers! Come chat with us and our volunteers! Our divers are happy to discuss everything kelp and how you can get involved with Reef Check. No sign-ups are necessary—just come and see us in action!” Details: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Caspar State Beach.

“OPEN HOUSE AT THE URCHIN RANCH. Visit the Noyo Center Marine Field Station in Noyo Harbor and learn about the organization’s land-based urchin aquaculture system, or urchin ranch. While you are there, see the underwater photo and video installation featuring the work of Abbey Dias and Patrick Webster, taste wild and farmed uni, and learn more about the fascinating purple urchin from Noyo Center educators.” Details: 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Noyo Center Marine Field Station, 32430 N. Harbor Drive, Fort Bragg. Donations welcome.

“Learn about fine Japanese whiskey from expert Jonathan Darrow as he pairs whiskeys with a multicourse, uni-centric meal prepared by Little River Inn’s Chefs Joe Perez and Marc Dym. Make it a true getaway with a two-night stay at the always delightful Little River Inn.”

“Join the Noyo Harbor staff for a walking tour of Noyo Harbor from 10 .m.-noon. Learn about the different fisheries and vessels that operate out of the marina and how a healthy kelp forest relates to healthy fisheries and thus healthy communities.” Details: 10 a.m.-noon at Noyo Harbor High Dock.

Throughout:

“UNI ADVENTURES. A variety of Mendocino restaurants are offering special Uni menus during this timeframe, from Uni Baked Oysters to Salmon with Champagne and Sea Urchin Beurre Blanc; various prices. Pull a seat up at Harbor House Inn, Inn at Newport Ranch, KW Saltwater Café, Noyo Harbor Inn, Izakaya Gama, SIBO and Wickson Restaurant.”
