You Can Visit Andrea Bocelli's Family Vineyard in Tuscany — and Even Record Your Own Song in His Studio

The church bells begin to ring and I look up, admiring the picture-perfect, honey-hued chapel perched on a hill in the middle of Valdera, an area 30 minutes outside Pisa. The sun is hot, and other than the bells and the steady buzz of cicadas, it’s quiet. In front of me, the sunflower-spotted hills of Tuscany dip and dive like notes on the endless musical scores found in the recording studio I’m about to enter.

And it’s not just any recording studio, it’s where Italy’s most popular living tenor produces music.

Before boarding Oceania Cruises’ Regal Riviera Voyage, I didn’t know much about musical maestro Andrea Bocelli. But when I learned that I could join an onshore excursion that would allow me to spend the day touring Bocelli’s studio — and record my own song while I was there, let’s just say this karaoke-loving traveler was sold. I mean, when in (or kind-of near) Rome, right?

Before arriving, I had imagined a glitzy operation — a shiny, modern space fit for the Beyoncé of Italy. Instead, I find myself standing on the front lawn of a modest coral-stucco home that’s surrounded by the rolling hills of Tuscany. And before I know it, I’m greeted with a gentle smile by the studio’s owner, Pierpaolo Guerrini.

“Trenta­nove anni,” is the first thing Guerrini says, flashing his fingers for emphasis. He wants me to know that he’s been friends with Bocelli for 39 years. I’ll later learn that during those 39 years, Guerrini has served as the sound engineer on several of Bocelli’s albums and helped write multiple songs on the singer's 2018 album, “Si.”

In the studio’s entryway, there’s charming clutter — family photos, prayer cards, and several newspaper clippings taped to the wall. It’s only when Guerrini points to a nondescript door on the right that I spot the sleek main “control room,” where a massive mixing board with hundreds of buttons and dials enable Guerrini to masterfully add depth and clarity to Bocelli's recordings.

Once settled in the control room, we turn our attention to the flat-screen TV above the mixing board where Guerrini plays a documentary featuring footage from Bocelli's most iconic performances, including his 2017 show at the Colosseum and scenes from Teatro del Silenzio (or Theatre of Silence), an open-air amphitheater in Lajatico, the singer’s hometown.

After the film, it’s time to give my own recording a go. But first, Guerrini gestures me outside where I discover that his wife has set out a bowl of barbecue Lays and several Pepsis for us to enjoy. I may have just met them, but as we crowd around the bowl of chips, it feels more like being at an old friend’s house than part of a cruise ship excursion.

Back inside, I’m led to a small, light-filled room where a standing microphone is set on a red Persian rug. A piano sits in the right corner. Guerrini hands me the lyrics to Bocelli’s “Can’t Stop Falling in Love” and gives me a thumbs up before accompanying me on the piano. Unfortunately, as my voice cracks mid-song, I realize that Bocelli’s musical magic is not contagious.

I laugh, listening to my recording in the car ride to Teatro del Silenzio and a wine tasting at the family’s vineyard . I drink away my sorrows with Alcide, which Bocelli’s niece — who is also the sommelier — generously pours before delivering a plate of glistening antipasto. There, our guide casually points out that the woman enjoying gnocchi at the back table is, in fact, Bocelli's mother.

Later on, in the museum , I discover a quote by the singer: “Every memory tied to Tuscany is kept guarded deep in my heart. I will carry it with me wherever I go, because I, myself, am the product of this land, the sum of my past, my experiences and my childhood dreams.”

When I get back to the ship, I can’t stop thinking about the quaint recording studio, the sound of church bells, the beauty of the Tuscan hills, Guerrini’s gentle smile, the thoughtful bowl of Lays, and Bocelli’s mother enjoying her gnocchi. Yes, the local community might be lucky to have Bocelli and his fame, but Bocelli is lucky to have this loving community too. Weeks later, the memory of this intimate visit still pulls on the chords of my heartstrings.

Here’s his take on travel and how it inspires his art:

National geographic traveler : what are your favorite sounds of the world.

Andrea Bocelli: My life is made out of sound. I live in the Tuscan countryside, so my day starts with the sounds of farms, of chickens and horses and other animals. Those sounds are most dear to me. When I go to a city such as New York, all the noise mutes out nature. But the music of silence always follows me, and in silence I can concentrate and develop ideas.

NGT:   What is the Theater of Silence ?

AB: An amphitheater I created in Laiatico, Italy, in the countryside that I love. Most of the year the sounds of nature reign, but on one day a year in July, thousands of people from all over the world come for a concert. It’s beautiful how on that one day the silence is broken by the sounds of so many languages.

NGT: How do you approach foreign places?

AB:   I’ve come to distinguish and expect certain sounds and smells when I get to a place. I know what kind of smell will greet me in Egypt; I know what smell will welcome me in the United States. When I go to a warm country, as soon as they open the door of the airplane, different smells get in my nose — of cinnamon and other spices.

NGT: Any travel regrets?

AB:   I’m like an athlete — I need to be in pristine condition to perform, so it can be frustrating that I can’t allow myself to experience all there is to do in a place. For instance, I’m amazed by Chinese cuisine — in the past, I’ve eaten all kinds of things, such as jellyfish. I would eat anything if I didn’t have to be so careful.

NGT:   What’s your Tuscan secret?

AB:   In the areas of La Sterza and Poggioncino, where I was born, there are simple paths along the river where I ride my horse that not many people know about. The beauty of their simplicity is what I love.

As your group arrives at Pisa Airport, your Tour Leader will be waiting for you, ready to accompany you directly to Albergo Celide in Lucca, your base for the next five days.

In the afternoon your tour leader will take you on a walking tour of the city centre, where you'll enjoy two hours of guided visits. Admire the Medieval Walls of Lucca and wander through Piazza san Michele and Piazza del Giglio.

After the guided tour, the group will enjoy a delicious dinner in a local restaurant, inside the walls of Lucca, before returning to the hotel.

Today you'll visit the Bocelli Vineyards, nestled in the hills of the Val D'Era, near Lajatico. You'll be able to admire the exterior view of the Bocelli Farmhouse before touring the vineyards on a guided visit that will teach you all about the Azienda Bocelli wine production.

Your group will then head into Lajatico, Andrea Bocelli's hometown. As you walk around its picturesque piazza and streets, you'll see many posters of Andrea Bocelli and even statues from past Teatro del Silenzio shows.

Lunch today will be at Officine Bocelli Restaurant, where you'll be joined by Maestro Bocelli's nephew, Alessio Bocelli. As you taste the incredible flavours of the Bocelli reds and whites, Alessio will share details and anecdotes about the Bocelli Family and their winemaking traditions.

You'll enjoy an afternoon stroll in Volterra after lunch and discover the beauty of its Ancient Roman Amphitheatre and its history of its Alabaster Crafts before returning to your hotel.

After breakfast, you'll be transferred to Pietrasanta where you'll see the highlights of this beautiful town on a walking tour. This town is known for its art galleries, marble art and sculpture boutiques.

The tour will move on to Forte dei Marmi, one of the most glamorous towns on the Tuscan riviera. While here you'll visit the Bocelli's Alpemare Beach Club where you'll enjoy a delicious seafood lunch paired with Bocelli Wines.

After lunch, your group will be chauffeured back to Lucca to prepare for an incredible night of music at the Teatro del Silenzio, where Andrea Bocelli will take to the stage along with other international music stars.

On the way to Lajatico, you will enjoy a pre-concert dinner in a local restaurant.

After breakfast and a relaxing morning, you'll be picked up for a day tour of Florence.

As you arrive, your day in Florence will begin with a tasty Florentine lunch in an intimate local restaurant.

You'll then meet your private licensed tour guide, ready for a walking tour of the city centre. The tour will last around three hours and you'll learn about the history of this beautiful city and its monuments, including the breathtaking Duomo, the amazing Piazza della Signoria, the Palazzo Vecchio, and the celebrated Ponte Vecchio. Please note the tour does not include entrance fees, the walking tour comprises exterior visits.

Today you'll check out after a final breakfast and transfer to Pisa airport for your flight home.

Just back from Mar Manor and what a trip, Massive thank you to James and the rest of the lads in Cassidy Golf, the trip couldn't have gone any better. Stayed 5 nights in the Intercontinental Mar Manor and played 3 rounds - Mar Manor (Easiest) El Valle & Saurines and the group were all blown away. Hotel was amazing - great food and some craic in the 19th hole!! Again lads thank you for all the help we will be coming back soon.

The trip to Biarritz was a great success. We, all 16, really enjoyed the trip. Hotel in centre of town was very good, great location and bed and breakfast was good standard. Great restaurants and bars all within walking distance great town for a few days/nights. The golf courses were top class and very local. No great distances to travel. Unlike Spain & Portugal where all the golf is set up for tourists, we were the only tourists playing in member clubs so it was very different and a great experience. Fortunately there was no rain all week, perfect weather for golf. Many thanks for your effort and contribution.

I have just come back from Sicily and had a great time and would have no hesitation in going back or recommending Donnafugatta Golf and Spa hotel to friends. I am going to try to put together a golf trip - four couples for October for a return trip. In terms of specifics the accommodation was superb. as good as any we have stayed in. Staff were professional, friendly and really nice - and we have little or no Italian. The two golf courses are a visual treat - really interesting, pleasing to the eye, fair but challenging and a real pleasure to play. In excellent condition particularly the greens. I was only sorry I was not playing better. Pool was brilliant as indeed was the service at the pool. Gym was excellent too!!

Just a line to say we thoroughly enjoyed our Penina visit last week. The arrangements were excellent... as was the hotel and the excellent golf facilities... Both practice areas and the course. It was a lovely group and e star of the show was undoubtedly Peter O Hagan. He was superb as a coach, player and coordinator of events. Its with pleasure I write this thank you note. From the time we arrived at Murcia airport, with Transfers and Neil Robinson form club to Hire waiting for us, likewise when we were leaving. You were right, the Hotel is really beautiful, great room spotlessly clean, quiet, overlooking the putting green, made feel very welcome by the staff... perfect. The golf courses were really great, North course was the most challenging, but I like a challenge, used all of my 20 h/cap shots. ha-ha. Just a quick message to thank you for organising our very successful golfing break last week to Roda and nearby courses. Everything went very well for us - flights, car, accommodation and, of course, the golf. We were a bit concerned that our flight back on Saturday night might be affected by the snow over here, but as things turned out we needn't have worried - we got back fine with a delay of only about an hour. Just a few words about our golf trip to Salou last April. The hotel Playa De Oro was located a short walk from the centre of town and was clean bright and friendly obliging staff. Salou offers restaurants and bars to suit all tastes. The transport arrangements for both airport and golf were first class. The hire golf clubs service (ie) at the hotel when we arrived - and left at the hotel when we left was perfect. The 4 rounds of golf and the Lumin hills and lakes offered a fair challenge to most golfers and all courses were in good order. I would have no hesitation recommending this package to golfers out there and especially with Cassidy golf Well done all. Kind regards.
