Bring Binoculars and Cameras: Binoculars can help you spot animals at a distance, while a good camera can capture those magical moments. Make sure to bring adequate zoom lenses and a pair of binoculars.

Respect Wildlife and Rules: Always maintain a safe distance from animals, and never attempt to feed or disturb them. Follow the park's rules and guidelines to ensure both your safety and the animals'.

Stay Hydrated and Wear Appropriate Clothing: Bandhavgarh's climate can be hot, so staying hydrated is essential. Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and don't forget sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

Bandhavgarh National Park: A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit, permits, hotels

By Toshita Sahni

Bandhavgarh National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Nestled among the Satpura hills in central India is Bandhavgarh, a national park rich in history as well as wildlife. This famous tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh gets its name from a legend. “Bandhav” means brother and “garh” means fort—it is believed that Lord Ram gifted a fort in this region to his younger brother, Laxman. The park has many sites of archaeological significance, but its glorious tigers remain the landmark attraction.

Prakash Dwivedi was born and raised in a village on the borders of Bandhavgarh. He has spent fourteen years as a safari guide, introducing people to the many charms of the forest he considers his home. Here’s what you should know before planning a trip to Bandhavgarh National Park:

What makes Bandhavgarh National Park special?

The increased tiger density of Bandhavgarh draws many enthusiasts from within and outside the country. The reserve is spread over more than 1500sqkm and boasts a population of over 120 tigers. Its terrain is characterised by hills, valleys, marshes, meadows and rivers—all of which shelter wildlife ranging from ferocious carnivores to delicate butterflies. Besides biodiversity, the park is also home to many legends and places of historical interest. Within the reserve, one can find Badi Gufa, a 10th-century cave carved out of solid sandstone, said to have housed armies in ancient times. Visitors frequent Three Cave Point, as the structure is known to provide animals shelter from the elements. It is also believed that Sant Kabir and Tansen have stayed in Bandhavgarh.

What to spot at Bandhavgarh National Park?

There are approximately 37 species of mammals and 250 species of birds in the park. The most commonly spotted mammals are tigers, leopards, sloth bears, jackals, and wild dogs. Among the three deer species found in the park, sightings of the sambar deer and the spotted deer are more frequent than those of the elusive barking deer. You will also find 300+ species of birds in the reserve, such as the pond heron, white-necked stork, coppersmith barbet, sarus crane, asian green bee-eater, scarlet minivet, and many more.

Dwivedi has many spotting rituals, but the most important one is to pay attention to sounds in the forest.

“More often than not, the behaviour of other animals will alert you that a predator is in the vicinity. For instance, a naturalist will tell you that deer and langurs tend to make a distinctive noise when they feel threatened. So, if you hear that particular call, you can predict that a tiger must be close at hand.”

What's the best time to visit Bandhavgarh National Park?

Safaris in the core zones happen only from 1st October to the end of June. They remain closed during the peak monsoon season, although the buffer zones are open year-round. If you are mainly interested in spotting animals and birds, summer offers you the best chances. With the heat, the forest’s vegetation starts drying up. Natural bodies of water inside the reserve are very few. Moreover, artificial ones, which are periodically replenished, lie very close to the safari routes. Therefore, animals are obliged to come to these specific locations to drink water—thus increasing the probability of sightings . As foliage becomes thinner, birds can also be spotted more easily.

On the other hand, if you want to enjoy the lush greenery of this majestic park, Dwivedi suggests visiting between October and February. He explains, “In winter, the forest is completely green and provides a scenic backdrop to your sightings. The animals are harder to spot but more at ease. You get to see them leisurely roaming around their habitat—it’s truly wonderful. In the summers, you only see thirsty, frustrated animals pacing in a dry jungle.”

How many safaris should you do during a three-night stay?

The guide recommends doing at least one safari in each of the three core zones so that you feel that “you have truly experienced Bandhavgarh”. Since no fences or barriers separate each of the zones, animals are free to move between them. Hence, visiting all of them gives you more opportunities to spot different species.

What are the safari slots to book at Bandhavgarh?

There are two slots in the day for safaris. At present, the morning safari is from around 6:45am to 11:30am, whereas the afternoon one is from 3pm to 6pm. These timings keep changing slightly, depending on the seasons and times of sunrise and sunset. According to Dwivedi, the morning slot is the best, because you get to spend four to five hours in the jungle. Not only is the forest a lovely place to be at that time, but the longer duration improves your chances of spotting the animals. Night safaris happen in the buffer zones from 7pm to 10pm. However, visibility is restricted to what the headlights of your vehicle can illuminate. Although it is thrilling to be in the jungle in the dark, don’t expect to get many sightings.

How to book a safari permit at Bandhavgarh and how much does it cost?

It is best to book the permits online via the Madhya Pradesh forest office’s  website . Dwivedi advises against doing it offline. A permit costs Rs2,450 for weekdays and Rs3,050 for weekends and festival dates. Safari bookings open four months in advance, and only a specific number of jeeps are allowed inside the forest per shift. Hence, it is important to plan ahead. Note that six people (excluding the driver and the guide) are allowed in one jeep. Children aged five years and above are counted among the six.

How to book a jeep and guide at Bandhavgarh?

Once you book a permit, you have to present a hard copy of the same to the forest department office at the Park. They will then allot you a jeep and a guide. The jeep charge is Rs3,000. Guides assigned by the department charge Rs480 or Rs600, depending on their category, G1 or G2. Dwivedi clarifies that there is no significant difference between the two options. Guests can pay extra and choose an independent guide to accompany them. For greater convenience, most hotels offer to handle all the bookings on behalf of the client and charge a service fee.

Which zones are the best in Bandhavgarh?

Bandhavgarh National Park A safari guide's tips on the best time to visit permits hotels

Unlike other national parks in the country, the formal zoning of the park is relatively recent. Before 2012, Bandhavgarh did not have different zones and well-established regulations. Today, it has three core and four buffer zones. Tala, Magadhi and Khitauli are the core zones exclusively used for safari activities. There are also four buffer zones: Dhamokar, Johila, Panpatha and Paljha. People from nearby villages tend to frequent these zones to collect timber and forest produce. Animal sightings are fewer in these buffer zones because the animals are driven away by human activity and movement. Nevertheless, safaris also take place in these buffer zones (except Paljha).

Dwivedi highly recommends the Tala Zone, which is also the oldest in the park. The Charan Ganga river flows into the Tala Zone from the famous Shesh Shaiya point. In the summers, many animals gravitate towards this natural water body. According to the guide, the natural beauty of this zone, especially during winters, is awe-inspiring.

Besides jeep drives, what else can you do at Bandhavgarh?

Hotels near the park arrange bird-watching trips, nature walks, tribal village visits as well as a range of adventure activities. Dwivedi suggests opting for a village visit. These are immersive experiences that give you in-depth insights into the culture, habits and practices of the locals. You may also get to learn about how organic medicines and other natural products are made.

What We Do?

Bandhavgarh National Park has a rich history, associated with the flourishing medieval city of Bandhavgarh. The term BANDHAV means brother or friend. GARH word means fort. So, the overall meaning is Fort of a brother / friend. The name of the National Park is derived from this term. The fort is considered to be one of the marvels of ancient ‘Treta Yug’ period. The Baghels were the main rulers of the region in the medieval era for the longest period.

When the Baghels shifted capital city of their kingdom to Rewa, the Bandhavgarh region was somewhat cut-off. The region was later developed into a thick forest habitat for wild animals, mainly tigers. It was soon declared as a game reserve for the Royals.

As years passed by, rules shifted through various focal points, and ultimately in 1968, the State Government got the rights of the land and the forest. In the year 1982, it was declared a National Park. After 11 years, in 1993, the Park became a Tiger Reserve under the scheme of Project Tiger.

Bandhavgarh national park

Introduction.

Bandhavgarh is a famous Tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh state of central India. It lies in North-East regions of state. It spread over Vindhya mountain ranges in Central India which is well known for its 2000 years old history which is evident from ancient caves, statues, rock paintings. Now a days, Bandhavgarh is more popular for its tiger safari experience. Till year 1968 it remains a private game reserve of Baghela rulers from Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh. Till this period, its private owners maintained the forest area, restricted the hunting activities for general public but organized hunting expeditions for their special guests. So we can say that actual wildlife conservation begins when this forest came into control of Forest Department. Since that time, Bandhavgarh moved into positive direction of wildlife conservation and registered significant imporvement in population of tigers and other animals. From tourism point of view, it gained popularity after it was included in Project Tiger by declaring this forest as "Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve" in year 1992-93. This was major milestone in journey of Bandhavgarh, resulted into major turnaround in its exposure to rest of the world. Actual tourism begins from this time, in this area and today no tiger safari itinerary is considered complete without inclusion of Bandhavgarh national park. More than 32 species of mammals and 250 species of birds & 70 species of butterflies are found in Bandhavgarh National Park. Common Langurs and Rhesus Macaque represent the primate group. Carnivores include the Tiger, Leopard, Asiatic Jackal, Sloth Bear, Ratel, Bengal Fox, Striped Hyena, Jungle Cat. The artiodactyls frequently sighted are Wild Boar, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Chausingha. Mammals such as wild dogs, the small Indian Civet, Palm Squirrel and Lesser Bandicoot Rat are seen occasionally.

Important Links

Bandhavgarh is a historical place where human society left space for wildlife to survive, grow & flourish. In first eye view, we will find it a hilly area where 32 hills are located and in one of the hill, we will find the ruins of Bandhavgarh Fort from which name of tiger reserve is derived. Don't compare it with forts of Rajasthan as it was a small fort with man-made ponds, temples, treasury house, statues. All the marks of history are scattered over hills of Bandhavgarh. As per archeological experts, who visited Bandhavgarh in different years, this region has history of more than 2000 years old. Here we can find ancient caves, buddhist era statues, Hindu god & godess statues etc. Several dynasties controlled this region is different centuries thus different marks of history are found over here. This region was controlled by Magh rulers, Sengar dynasty, Kalchuri rulers and Baghel rulers. Recent preserved history was from Baghel dynasty as they were the last rulers and documented the historical incidents in record.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

Main tourist attraction of Bandhavgarh is its jeep safari. Whole area is surrounded by forests and some villages thus safari drives are the activity thing to do here. Apart from this we can do some nature walk and birding. Fort safari was also available in past but now a days, it is closed for visitors. In a day, two safari drivers are offered to visitors where as in every Wednesday, park is closed for evening safari drive. Park is divided into different zones. In a single safari drive, vehicle remains in one particular safari zone. Inside Bandhavgarh, their are different popular spots which are mostly visited by tourists like meadows, water-holes, hills, tree-clusters etc. In addition to jungle safaris, tourists can do nature walk inside resort or main roads and also visit to nearby villages to understand culture and lifestyle of local people.

JUNGLE SAFARI

Jungle safari drive is the main activity to do at Bandhavgarh. Here main safari season is from October to June month when core safari zones remain open for tourism. They get closed in monsoon, from July to September. It doesn't means that jungle safari is not possible in monsoon. During monsoon season, buffer safari zones remains open for tourists to do jungle safari in buffer zones only. In short & simple words, Core zone is central forest where as buffer zone is forest surrounding to core zone. For Bandhavgarh safaris, we always recommend to do advance booking as on most of the travel dates, it gets soldout in advance. Here, on record, two types of jungle safaris are offered to tourists i.e. jeep safari and elephant safari. As elephants are mainly used for patrolling purpose thus denied for tourism. Thus tourists rely on jeep safaris and recently introduced hot air balloon safari drives. At Bandhavgarh 4 types of jungle safari modes are offered i.e. Full-jeep (non-sharing) safari, Single seat (sharing) safari, canter safari and balloon safari modes. Full-jeep safari mode means to book complete safari jeep booking. In this mode you will be accompanied by safari guide and driver. In Single seat safari mode, you may book seat in a jeep i.e. sharing mode. In such drives, you will be accompanied by other tourists also. It is cheaper then full-jeep safari mode. Taking guide service, during each safari drive is mandatory. Canter safari is another low cost safari medium. Canter is actually an open bus of 18-seater in which per seat tickets are offered to tourists. It can't be booked in advance thus mostly for walk-in tourists who reach Bandhavgarh, without advance safari booking. It is offered from ticket counter thus tourists have to reach the ticket counter by own or with help of hotel management. For park visit, tourists are required to book safari ticket/s as per their schedule. Safari ticket contains travel date, morning/evening round detail, visitor name/s, father/husband name, gender, city name, identity document number. Tourists are required to do safari in jeep with company of registered guide. Tourists are required to pay separately for jeep and guide also. We offer jungle safari booking in Bandhavgarh. Their are 3 core-zones & 03 Buffer zones in Bandhavgarh for jungle safari drives. At one time we can do safari in one safari zone only. Here core zones are Tala zone, Magadhi Zone and Khitauli zone. Where as buffer zones are Dhamokhar, Panpatha and Johila. At present, safaris are done on these three safari zones.

SAFARI TIMING

At Bandhavgarh national park we can enjoy morning safari, afternoon or evening safari and night safari or late evening safari. These 3 rounds of jungle safari drives can be enjoyed in a day. On every Wednesday, park remain closed for afternoon safari in core zone. It means, we can do buffer zone safari. Here readers should must note that night safaris are only offered in buffer zone for very limited number of vehicles. Safari timing of Bandhavgarh varies from month to month because it depends upon the timing of sunrise and sunset. As per change in sunrise and sunset timing, minor adjustments in timing were made by park management. If you want to know your safari timing, just go through your safari permit, issued by park management, it is clearly mentioned over it. If you have any travel company safari permit (not the park authroity original one) they you may not find the information. We have made separate page for safari timing information. Just click and check the timing information.

Guide to Bandhavgarh National Park and taking a wildlife and tiger safari in India

WHAT’S THE BEST PLACE to see a wild tiger in India? There’s some debate of course, but many will say Bandhavgarh National Park is the best place for tiger safari in India. In other words,  Bandhavgarh gives you the best chances of spotting a tiger in India. Located in Madhya Pradesh, in the heart of the country, Bandhavgarh National Park’s unique terrain, combined with the density of tigers, makes it a great place for a tiger and wildlife safari in India. I can personally recommend Bandhavgarh for two reasons: one, I saw my first tiger in India there (in 2016), and two, I have seen a tiger every time I have gone on wildlife safari in this beautiful national park of India.

Bandhavgarh National Park has the highest density of Royal Bengal tigers in the world.” Madhya Pradesh Tourism

Naturally, there are never any guarantees you will see a wild tiger when you go on a safari in India – the parks don’t allow radio collars or walkie talkies. Part of the fun is the chase, and not knowing what will happen. The guides and naturalists use their skills and knowledge of the parks and the tiger population to track tigers. But, honestly, it doesn’t matter. These parks are so beautiful, and so full of birds, animals, and scenic landscapes that you won’t care. In fact, I truly believe you increase your chances of seeing a tiger by staying relaxed, appreciating the moment, and NOT pressuring the guides and naturalists.

Bandhavgarh is a place of mythological and legendary significance. The ancient Bandhavgarh Fort is of great importance as it is believed to have been gifted by Lord Rama to his younger brother Lakshmana.” Madhya Pradesh Tourism

Tigers playing in the water at Bandhavgarh National Park Tiger Reserve

All about tigers

Thanks to tiger protection and conservation measures that started in the 1970s, India’s wild tiger population is on the rise. Every four years a tiger census is conducted. In 2008, there were 1,411 tigers in India , increasing to 1,706 in 2010, and to 2,226 in 2014.

UPDATE : Just released on July 29, 2019 — Global Tiger Day — the 2018 tiger census revealed that the wild tiger population increased substantially to 2,967.

There are 50 tiger reserves scattered throughout the country dedicated to protecting and conserving them. Madhya Pradesh, a large state in the very centre of India, has six tiger reserves – the most of any state in India – including my favourite, Kanha (you can read my Guide to Kanha National Park here) and Bandhavgarh. Read my guide to learn more about all of the animals of India .

Did you know:

  • tigers are the biggest cats
  • the species found in India is the Bengal Tiger ( Panthera tigris tigris )
  • Bengal tigers (or Royal Bengal tigers) are the most numerous tiger species in the world and are also found in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan
  • India has about 70% of the world’s wild tigers

Bandhavgarh hill with pond, Bandhavgarh National Park Tiger Reserve

All about Bandhavgarh National Park

Bandhavgarh has a rich and ancient history. Tenth century Bandhavgarh Fort sits majestically atop Bandhavgarh hill (unfortunately, the fort is not open to the public). “Bandhav” means brother in Sanskrit and “garh” means fort, so the name of the fort – and the park – is brother’s fort. The brother in question is Lakshman, younger brother of Ram, which means Bandhavgarh is associated with the Ramayana epic. This thickly forested region was part of the Maharaja of Rewa’s hunting grounds until 1968, when the family granted the land to the government to become a national park. In 1993, it was declared a tiger reserve under the Project Tiger initiative.

Bandhavgarh park is divided into a core area, with three zones open to the public, and a buffer zone, totalling 1,598 square kilometres (including Panpatha Wildlife Sanctuary). The core area is 716 square kilometres, with the buffer zone adding another 820 square kilometres – but the area open to the public is only 105 square kilomtres.

The zones open to the public are Tala, Magadhi, and Khitauli, and they each restrict the number of vehicles that can enter. Tala was the original zone, and it includes Bandhavgarh hill and the ancient fort. Three buffer zones, spread over Umaria and Katni district, were added to the Bandhavgarh to alleviate the pressure on the core zones and give more people an opportunity to visit the park. They are Dhamokhar, Panpatha and Johila.

As of this writing, summer 2019,   Bandhavgarh has about 60 tigers , though locals say there could be as many as 65 to 75. This figure does not include cubs, only full-grown, adult tigers. Over the past winter, every female tiger in Bandhavgarh had cubs, so there was a lot of opportunity to see mother tigers with their cubs.

This is why Bandhavgarh is probably the best place to see a wild tiger in India — with so many tigers in such a small tiger reserve, your chances are better than just about anywhere else, plus the terrain helps, too. Spread over the Vindhyachal mountain range, in the Umaria and Katni districts of Madhya Pradesh, Bandhavgarh is comprised of a semi-dry deciduous forest, grasslands and sal forests, 32 hills, and some stunning dramatic scenery that includes soaring cliffs and rocky plateaus (especially in Tala zone, which has the most photogenic landscape and some say the highest tiger density, too).

The reserve experiences at least three seasons – summers, winters and monsoon – and it’s generally in well-preserved condition under the care of the Forest Department. (Though I have issue with the state of the toilets, which are deplorable …)

Bandhavgarh opens October 15 each year, and closes at the end of June. The park is closed from July 1 to October 14 to give the animals a break, and because of the monsoon season.

Naresh Gudda Singh with jeep at Tala Gate, Bandhavgarh National Park Tiger Reserve

How to book a wildlife and tiger safari in Bandhavgarh

Bandhavgarh is a very popular national park and tiger reserve, and the number of vehicles that can enter each day is highly restricted. This means, it’s imperative to book your safari in advance (at least 90 days) to ensure that you get the dates you want.

You can enter the park either by jeep (Maruti Gypsy) or canter, an open bus-like vehicle. My preference would always be for the Gypsy of course, as it is small and agile, and you are with only 4 or 5 other people.

There are three core zones open to the public: Tala, Magadhi, and Khitauli, and you will be assigned a zone.

There are two safaris each day, morning and afternoon – and the park is closed every Wednesday afternoon. Timings for safaris in the core zone are:

  • Morning: 6 am – 10 am or 6:30 – 10:30 am (depending on season)
  • Afternoon: 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm or 3:00 – 6:00 pm or 4:00 – to 7 pm (depending on season)

You can book a safari permit through the MP Forest Department website but you will still need to book a guide and vehicle. If you are staying at a luxury lodge, they can book your safaris and provide you with a guide and vehicle.

Always remember to carry your passport with you on safari as it will be checked at the gate. You will be turned away if your passport does not match the booking name and details. Also remember to bring everything with you, as once you enter the park, you cannot leave and come back.

Tiger at Bandhavgarh National Park Tiger Reserve

Best time to go on safari in India

Bandhavgarh is worth visiting every day that it’s open, but there are different seasons and different reasons for going. Fall is pleasant, December and January are cold (it can drop to 2 C.) and April to June is very hot and can reach 45 C. – but it’s the best time to see tigers because they gather at water holes to cool off and drink.

Tala is said to be a good zone for tigers while Khitauli is said to be a good zone for birding. Late fall, when the migratory birds appear, is a great time for birding at Bandhavgarh.

What to wear on tiger safari in India

Never wear bright colours on wildlife safari. It disturbs the animals. Wear earthy tones like beige and khaki, and layers as it’s chilly in the morning and then warms up. A hat is essential and so is a buff, or scarf, to cover your nose and mouth on dusty drives. Wear sunscreen and bring sunglasses, plus binoculars, camera equipment, your passport and some rupee notes to tip the guides. I also recommend a water bottle, tissue, and hand sanitizer (plus wet wipes). Toilet conditions are not good at Bandhavgarh, I’m sorry to say, you are basically on your own as far as hygiene is concerned.

Getting to Bandhavgarh National Park

Like all the best tiger reserves, Bandhavgarh is in a remote location and it does take a bit of time and effort to get there. Of course, it’s absolutely worth it when you do. The nearest train stations are Umaria (45-minute drive) and Katni (two-and-a-half hour drive). The nearest airport is Jabalpur, a four or five-hour drive away. There are trains and flights from Delhi every day. If you are coming from Khajuraho, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Madhya Pradesh, I recommend driving. Though it’s a long drive, it’s the most direct way to get there.

Once you make the journey all the way to Bandhavgarh, you are within driving distance of Kanha National Park, another one of the best parks in India for seeing a tiger. And from Kanha, you can drive to Pench, and then from there to Satpura.

Animals, birds, and wildlife in Bandhavgarh National Park

There’s lots more to Bandhavgarh than tigers. It’s a great spot for birding with more than 150 species, plus 22 mammals including leopards, sambar deer, nilgai, gaur, Asiatic jackal, sloth bear, jungle cat and wild pig. Birds sighted include lesser adjutant crane, sarus crane, black kite, crested serpent eagle, grey hornbill, white breasted kingfisher, and an abundance of Indian rollers.

My first tiger: A story

Did you know I saw my first wild tiger in Bandhavgarh National Park? I was on my very first wildlife safari in Madhya Pradesh, one of the first of my life (I had been on two in Ranthambhore), with Naresh “Gudda” Singh from Pugdundee Safaris Kings Lodge as my guide. We were on a tea break when Gudda heard a growl, and said, “Get in the jeep!” We slammed down our glass tea cups and jumped in. Gudda raced along the road, and suddenly stopped. I have no idea how he knew where to stop, it seemed magical at the time (but of course that’s his skill) … and then out of the forest, a sub-adult male tiger walked nonchalantly towards us. He may have been non-plussed, but I was most definitely plussed! I don’t know how I was able to capture this video, below, as I was so excited. I felt a sense of euphoria that is hard to describe. The tiger electrifies the forest, there is no doubt about it. Video below from that first encounter!

Bandhavgarh resorts, lodges, and hotels

There are lots of resorts, hotels, and lodges around Bandhavgarh to choose from, in various price ranges. I’ve chosen five of the very best.

tree lined walkway at Kings Lodge Bandhavgarh, India

Pugdundee Safaris Kings Lodge Bandhavgarh

You can never go wrong with Pugdundee Safaris. This company ticks every box, and at a reasonable price that gives you a lot of value for money. The Kings Lodge is one of the company’s premier lodges, and it’s a very special place. A welcoming main lodge building includes a reception, library, dining room, pool, store, and outdoor terrace with firepit. Rooms are in individual cottages with large balconies, and lots of comfort and extra touches – way too many to list here. The food is great, the people are better, and the naturalists are the best of the best. I also like the location, in the buffer zone surrounded by grasslands and walking trails. You can read more about Pugdundee Safaris lodges here .

  • Kings Lodge is rated #1 on TripAdvisor. Click here to read a review or book .

Tree house hotel at Bandhavgarh National Park Tiger Reserve

Pugdundee Safaris Tree House Hideaway

Who wouldn’t want to stay in a tree house? Especially one that provides comfort and touches of luxury, like a shower with a sliding door that makes it open-air, a cushy seating area, a large balcony, and almost complete privacy. I’m very fond of the Pugdundee Safaris Tree House Hideaway, a charming property immersed in the forest buffer zone of Bandhavgarh. You really do feel you’re in a tree house in the forest. Even the main lodge building is built around a huge mahua tree, with a lounge upstairs and an open-air dining room on the main floor. There is something very romantic about Tree House Hideaway, especially if you have a private field dinner. I can’t recommend this place enough. Staying here and going on wildlife safaris will give you a harmonious experience of the jungles of Madhya Pradesh. You can read more about Pugdundee Safaris lodges here .

  • Read a TripAdvisor review of Tree House Hideaway here … and book.

Courtyard with tree at Bandhav Vilas, Bandhavgarh National Park Tiger Reserve

Bandhav Vilas

I wanted to include a more budget-friendly property in this recommended list so I spent an afternoon at Bandhav Vilas and I was really impressed. It is a place that’s designed for groups, so it doesn’t have that boutique feel, but they’ve done a great job to make the place both comfortable and still retain a cultural flavour with the design of the villas. They have a huge swimming pool and a large organic garden that provides the kitchen with produce. I also understand from my research and experience, they have excellent naturalists working there, so you will definitely be in good hands.

  • Bandhav Vilas has excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. Click here to read the reviews or book .

Lawn, trees and lodge building at Mahua Kothi, Bandhavgarh National Park Tiger Reserve

Taj Hotels Mahua Kothi

I spent an afternoon at Mahua Kothi and was very impressed. Though it is a luxury property, it retains a very natural, rustic feeling that befits a wildlife lodge. In fact, the company modelled their wildlife lodges after the very best in Africa. So you can enjoy the finer things in life without losing a sense that you are in a natural environment, and on a quest to enjoy the jungles and wildlife of central India. The lodge, dining areas, swimming pool, spa, and rooms are all designed to showcase the local culture and landscape. You will not be disappointed staying here, and of course the staff and naturalists are all best-in-class. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised.

  • Mahua Kothi is #2 on TripAdvisor. Click here to read reviews or book .

Pool at Samode Safari Lodge, Bandhavgarh National Park Tiger Reserve

Samode Safari Lodge

The Samode Safari Lodge is perhaps the most luxurious lodge in the Bandhavgarh area, and the most remote. I had breakfast and toured the property and really enjoyed the food and the ambience. A Relais&Chateaux hotel, Samode is owned and run by the same group that owns and runs the famous Samode Palace Hotel in Jaipur (as well as the Samode Haveli and he Samode Bagh). The lodge features a tastefully decorated main building with wooden terraces, fire places, lounges, a pool room and library and various dining options. Twelve luxury villas are spread around the property, giving you privacy and comfort, and a pool, gym and spa are also available. The in-house naturalists take you into the park, which is a distance away as the Samode Safari Lodge is in a remote area.

  • Samode is #1 on TripAdvisor for Specialty Lodging. Click here to read reviews and book .

Bandhavgarh National Park Safari

Bandhavgarh National Park is a land where you can experience the enthralling joy of connecting with nature. The park is particularly famous for its tiger population and diverse flora and fauna. Vast and dense Jungle, swift activities of animals, and chasing every clue of the predator's presence are the thrills of tiger safaris in these forests. Safaris in the Jungle of Bandhavgarh are the best way to safely and responsibly confront life in the wild. Bandhavgarh National Park organises different types of Jungle safaris for its visitors considering their interest in tourists and the well-being of the jungle, but a Jeep Safari at Bandhavgarh National Park is a much-loved delight for adventure lovers and wildlife photographers. Here is the complete information that you need to complete your Bandhavgarh safari booking.

Jeep Safari in Bandhavgarh National Park

The most popular and considerably the best way to explore the jungle is through the Jeep safari. You will be allocated a Jeep (open-top compact SUV) with a sitting of 6 tourists. It's the best choice as the compactness allows it to get along all tracks in the tiger reserve. Most common Jeep safaris are conducted two times a day. The first safari is in the early morning and the second in the early evening, as the animal movements are maximum in these times. There are also options for a whole-day safari and a night safari. These jeeps will pick you up from your accommodation and after the safari will drop you off on your stays.

Bandhavgarh National Park Safari Timings

Safari zones in bandhavgarh national park.

Bandhavgarh National Park has been divided into two kinds of zones in its total area of 1536 square kilometres. The two zones - The core zones and the Buffer zones are divided according to animal movements; core zones have higher animal movement, especially of the predators, while the Buffer zones have less. You are assigned a specific zone on your entry to the park and you can only be within the boundaries of that specific zone. There are also several distinctive rules in different zones. So let's know more about the different zones and make your wildlife tourism perfect.

Popular Core Safari Zones in Bandhavgarh

The core zones are the main zones of the Jungle with most of the animal movement in it. The conservation of wildlife and natural resources are protected here thus there is no human habitation allowed. Core zones have much limited tourist movements that allow both wildlife to stay ideal and ensure more human safety.

There are three core zones in Bandhavgarh National Park all of which are accessible through Jeep safaris. Out of the three, the Tala and Magadhi core zones are more popular due to high tiger sightings.

Tala Safari Zone Bandhavgarh

Tala is the most popular zone for safari in the whole Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. The highest tiger sightings are reported from this zone. This tiger zone has a major forest area covered with sal trees and grasslands. Rajbhra and Chakradhara are popular meadows ideal for tiger sightings. Along with this, Tala zone has a number of attractions including the most popular and historical Bandhavgarh Fort. It is said that Lord Ram had given this fort to his younger sibling Lakshman as a gift. Tala core zone got its name from the Tala village. The entry gate of Tala is the main gate of the whole Bandhavgarh safari area and the ticket counter is here.

  • Entry Gate: Tala entry point/ Gate number 1
  • Tiger Sighting Chances: High
  • Maximum Number of Vehicles: Morning - 28, Evening - 27
  • Popular Attractions in This Zone : Bandhavgarh Fort, Shesh Shaiya (idol of lord Vishnu), Bari Gufa, Sita mandap, Gopalpur pond, three cave points, etc.

Magadhi Safari Zone Bandhavgarh

Adjoining the Tala zone is the Magadhi core zone which is another great Bandhavgarh National Park Safari zone for tiger sightings. It is about 8-10 km from the entry point of Tala and even shares some territory with the Tala core zone. Apart from the tiger sightings, Magadhi is popular for the Charger Point, named after Charger, who was the most popular tiger that once lived in these territories. Magadhi core area has several man-made water-holes that work as the hotspot of tiger sightings in the summer. Murdhawa, Dabhadol tank, Sookhi Talab, Sookhi dam, Mehman Pond, and others.

  • Entry Gate: Magadhi entry point/ Gate number 2
  • Maximum Number of Vehicles: Morning - 26, Evening - 25
  • Popular Attractions in This Zone: Charger Point, Climber's Point, Dinosaur Rock, Rajbehra, Patiha Camp, Dahua Tower, etc.

Khitauli Safari Zone Bandhavgarh

The western part of Bandhavgarh National Park, Khitauli core zone, is the third core zone that allows tiger sightings in the wild of Bandhavgarh. This core zone is opposite the Magadhi zone and is 5 km from the Tala entry point. Khitauli core zone has a dry-deciduous forest in most parts and several grass meadows. Although it has offered fewer tiger sightings compared to the other two core zones, it has abundant wildlife and herbivorous animals such as the migrant wild elephants. Also, Khitauli has the most dense forest and no hilly terrain which makes it the best place for bird watching.

  • Entry Gate: Khitauli entry point/ Gate number 3
  • Tiger Sighting Chances: Moderate
  • Maximum Number of Vehicles: Morning - 21, Evening - 20
  • Popular Attractions in This Zone - the Umrai River, Marjadgarh Tower, Nigahi Nala, Garhpuri Dam, Charki Dongri, etc.

Buffer Zones in Bandhavgarh National Park

The buffer zone is the area that surrounds the core zones of Bandhavgarh National Park. In an area of 820 square kilometres, this buffer area allows more tourist movements than in the core zones. However the buffer zone has very slight chances of tiger sightings, still, Bandhavgarh wildlife safari in these extensively dense wildlife that has many other animals is not something one cannot admire. Due to rarer predators, these zones provide some great benefits to tourists. Buffer zones are open throughout the year for visits and can easily be booked even some days before the visit. Also, the Bandhavgarh National Park's buffer zones have walking safaris and Night safari which provide great wildlife experiences with nocturnal animals and bird sightings. There are three Buffer zones in Bandhavgarh National Park which are the Dhamokar, Johila, and Panpatha buffer areas.

Panpatha Safari Zone Bandhavgarh

Panpatha buffer zone adjoining the Khitauli core zone is a big northern part of Bandhavgarh National Park. A rich forest area is home to diverse wild animals which you can easily see in the early morning and evening hours. This zone can be accessed by Jeep Safari which has a tour of 3-4 hours. This buffer zone has its entry gate from Pachpedi and the safari route starts from Pachpedi and ends at Khitauli.

Dhamokhar Safari Zone Bandhavgarh

Dhanokar, the southwestern buffer zone of Bandhavgarh National Park is an extension of the Magadhi Core Zone accessible from the Parasi entry point. Dhanokar Buffer Zone is famous for leopard and Sloth bear sightings in its forest area. Ticket slots to the buffer zones could also be booked a couple of days prior to the visit. Safari in Bandhavgarh National Park’s Dhamokhar buffer zone starts from Parasi to Badawar and it covers Jamunia, Jhaanjh, Mudgudi, Kehrawah, Kadewaha, Kudarmada, Sahu, Taal, Shimada, Madehavah, Kalwahdhaar and Badawar.

Johila Safari Zone Bandhavgarh

The Johila buffer zone of Bandhavgarh safari area shares the eastern boundaries of the Tala Core Zone. Accessible from the Cechpur/Gajwahi gate this buffer zone has a dense forest that has rivers, waterfalls, and serene nature scenic spots. Johila Falls and Kuthulia Falls are two famous spots in this buffer zone. The favourable ecosystem of Johila makes it a paradise for bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. The Jeep safari in the Johila Buffer zone starts from Chechpur and ends at Gajwahi.

Bandhavgarh Safari Travel Tips

  • Book Your Trip in Advance: Bookings to the permit start 60-120 days prior so book your Bandhavgarh jungle safari tour always in advance.
  • Best Time for Tiger Sightings: The park is usually closed during the monsoon season (July to October) and open in the rest of the months. However, the best time for tiger sightings is in summer when they come out in search of water near lakes.
  • Clothing and Gear: Wear comfortable, earth-toned clothing to blend into the surroundings. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Binoculars and a good camera with zoom capabilities will add to the perks.
  • Respect Wildlife: Maintain a safe distance from animals, do not litter, disturb animals, or damage vegetation and follow your guide's instructions. Wildlife is unpredictable, so be cautious and avoid any sudden movements or loud noises.
  • Accommodation: There are various lodging options available near the park, ranging from luxury resorts to budget lodges. Book your stay in advance, especially during peak seasons and book your stay closer to the National Park to reach there quickly before your safari timing.
  • Transportation: The nearest major airport is Jabalpur Airport. You can also reach the park via train or road. Plan your transportation accordingly.

Remember, the primary goal when visiting Bandhavgarh National Park is to appreciate and enjoy the natural beauty while minimising your impact on the environment. Enjoy your wildlife adventure responsibly!

How to book your safari for Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve?

Photo of The Rovers Trail

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve

Tala Gate Entrance

Photo of Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Kila Bandhogarh, Madhya Pradesh, India by The Rovers Trail

Introduction

The Bandhavgarh Reserve is quite famous among nature & wildlife enthusiasts because of the majestic jungles and Tiger sightings. Bandhavgarh is situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh, 165 kms away from Jabalpur & 425 kms away from Nagpur. One can take a flight to Jabalpur or Nagpur and then reach Bandhvagarh through Road. The closest railway station is Umaria which is 25 kms away from the Tiger place.

While planning a vacation to Bandhavgarh, there were lot of questions like how to book the safari? What are their timings? Is taking online permit sufficient or one need any other permits also? How is guide allocated or how is gypsy allocated? How the sharing gypsy works? And lot of other similar questions. Google was my only rescue but unfortunately lot of information was either incomplete or not available. And after the vacation, we thought that this information should be shared so that someone else can easily plan their visit to Bandhavgarh.

Zones of Bandhavgarh

The jungle is divided into six zones:

• Tala ( Gate 1 )

• Magdhi ( Gate 2 )

• Khitauli ( Gate 3 )

• Panpatha Zone

• Dhamokhar Zone

• Johila Zone

The first three zones are the core zones and the last three zones are the buffer zones. Mostly people choose the core zones for safari as they have high density of tigers and the sightings in these zones are regular. But recently we were told that soon the buffer zones are also going to be turned into core zones because the sighting of tigers has increased in the buffer zones.

Out of the total area of the jungle, only 20% is open for Safari visits & rest of the area is untouchable for the tourists. Tala is one the famous core zones & most of the resorts are located in this area.

Booking Process

1. As per your schedule, please book your online permit on the government website :

https://forest.mponline.gov.in/

• When the website open up, choose Bandhavgarh Tigers Reserve from the Tiger Reserve tab.

• Click on Book Now

• You have to choose the permit type :

• Single Seat: If you want to do the safari in sharing, then choose this option. Like we were two of us and we wanted to share the cost of the whole vehicle with others who were visiting the same zone, so we chose Single Seat.

• Full Vehicle: In case you want to keep a vehicle for all yourself, and have the flexibility of exploring the forest on your own pace without somebody’s interruption, you should choose this option. Also if you are visiting with your family and do not want anyone else in your gypsy, then also this option is suitable.

• Choose the date of the safari & press the search button

• This will display availability of the three core zones; you can select the zone and time (morning or evening) you want to visit.

• Complete the login details, share the id proof, and pay the booking the amount and book for the Safari.

2. After reaching Bandhavgarh, depending on what permit type you have chosen, the steps needs to be followed :

Also you will be able to meet the other travelers who will be sharing the gypsy & guide with you. The gypsy & guide will be allocated as per the safari office & you do not hold any choice in the same. If you have booked early morning safari, you will have to complete the above process, a day before in the evening at 7:00 /8:00 PM.

• Full Vehicle - In this case, you can hire a guide of your choice and even a gypsy can be booked prior coming to Bandhavgarh if you have any contacts. Also your guide can block a gypsy for you from someone he knows. Don’t worry, in case you don’t know anyone, you can get yourself a gypsy and guide allocated in the booking office.

3. At the Safari booking office, you need to pay the charges for Guide & gypsy.

4. At the entry gates of the zones, you identity proof is verified, so ensure that you carry the same ID proof which you had provided at the time of online permit.

Points to be noted

• A Gypsy can accommodate 6 persons + 1 Guide + 1 driver in total. Every zone is allowed a total no. of 25 vehicles.

• In case of Single seat, if no other traveler turns up for the allocated seat with you, you would need to pay the complete amount of Gypsy & the guide. It will be as good as having the complete vehicle for yourself.

• In case of Full Vehicle, the gypsy can come & pick you up from your resort as well, if everything is planned in advance.

• The process changes as per the change in the duty officer/forest officer.

• Interestingly, we found the officials at the safari office very friendly and helpful & we visited the tiger reserve in December 2018.
