November is a lovely time to visit Lake Tahoe making it one of the best places to visit in California in November! The winter season is beginning to roll in and although snow has begun to fall and the ski resorts have started to open, the chilly winter temperatures are not at an all time low yet. Due to the temperatures still being relatively mild, it is the perfect weather to put on a big coat and go on outdoor adventures.
Lake Tahoe in November is a great destination to visit because of the endless outdoor activities you can embark on. Whether you would like to hit the trails and do a few winter hikes or you would like to put on your bluetooth snowboard helmet and hit the slopes, there are endless options to get outside and enjoy all that Lake Tahoe has to offer!
For those looking to visit Lake Tahoe, the best way to get there is by flying into the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and renting a vehicle from there. Having a vehicle is nice so that you can explore all around the lake and explore the surrounding areas as well.

San Francisco is a beautiful place to visit year-round. However, if you’re looking to visit in November, we are here to tell you that you are making a great choice! November is a great time to visit due to the milder weather, which makes it perfect for outings and activities with the added bonus of having fewer crowds.
We believe that a 3-5 day trip is ideal to explore key attractions like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and Fisherman’s Wharf. You should also make some time to experience the iconic cable cars, walk through Chinatown, and visit Little Italy. We also loved the SFMOMA museum if you’re interested in this kind of attraction.
The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the main entry point to this city. We found it easiest and even adventurous to get from the airport to downtown using the BART train system, but if you’re not comfortable with that, there are many hotels that offer shuttle services, and there is always the option of Uber or Lyft.
A very convenient way to get around and explore the sights here is with a bus tour , most offer a wide range of sites to visit for a very cost-efficient trip. Once in the city, we don’t think that a car is necessary to get around as public transportation here is very efficient and you’ll avoid the hassle of parking on those steep hills.
San Francisco can get pretty expensive if you are not careful with your spending. However, there is a plethora of mid-range hotels & restaurants that range from $150-$400 per night and meals that vary from $30-$50. We advise you to save your money and use public transportation to get around and instead put it towards visiting one main attraction, such as Alcatraz, a personal favorite.
For us, San Francisco is one of the best places to visit in California in November and offers a great balance of weather and crowds, along with some manageable costs and a range of diverse activities to enjoy. So, bring a nice warm coat and venture into this iconic city for your next adventure.

Big Sur National Scenic Byway should be on your California fall bucket list. November is a great month to visit this region. The crowds become smaller and you have a better chance of finding a deal on accommodation.
You would need a car to drive to Big Sur and explore its parks. Make sure to check the road conditions before you go. California Highway 1 is often closed due to landslides. The region is about 2 hours south of San Jose. The scenic drive and viewpoints take another 3 to 4 hours. Budget at least a full day to take the hiking trails in Big Sur.
The region stretches from Monterey to Morro Bay along California Highway 1. It is one of the best places to visit in California in November because. itwill be slightly less crowded. There are multiple viewpoints, state parks, and trails to explore along the route. While the viewpoints are free, you would need to pay $10 to visit all Big Sur State Parks in one day.
You can stop at nearly every overlook to admire the rugged coast of the Pacific Ocean. The Kasler Point, Bixby Creek Bridge, Castle Rock, and Seal Beach are some of the best viewpoints. Garrapata, Andrew Molera, and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Parks are great hiking destinations. Make sure to take a short hike to McWay Falls. This scenic waterfall drops into the Pacific Ocean and is a true symbol of Big Sur.
Consider staying at Jabberwock Inn in Monterey. This cute Bed & Breakfast is a great place to stay in Big Sur. Other options include the Holiday Inn Express Monterey , the Hyatt Regency Monterey , and the Hampton Inn Monterey .

Known for its laid back vibe, surf culture, and strong craft beer and food scene, Santa Cruz is one of the best places to visit in California in November. A late fall visit is the perfect time to wander the beaches now that the tourist crowds have gone home. It also puts you in Santa Cruz for the beginning of the monarch butterfly migration. Every year from November to January, monarch butterflies stop by Natural Bridges State Beach to feed themselves on eucalyptus before making their migration south!
Visit for a weekend and see all the highlights, including:
- – Santa Cruz Wharf, a hub of dining and shopping activity
- – Main Beach and Santa Cruz Boardwalk, which has arcade games and rides
- – Natural Bridges State Beach – photogenic rock arch, must-visit for photographers
- – The Santa Cruz Surfing Museum, to learn about the city’s surf culture
Or make Santa Cruz your base camp for a larger stay and take a budget California road trip to Monterey. Santa Cruz is just over one hour south of San Francisco by car. You can also get there by Amtrak (2 h 45 min) or Greyhound.
Santa Cruz is full of boutique hotels, bed and breakfasts and major chains. Ocean Street is lined with hotels, all within walking distance of the downtown food scene. Or you can get a hotel near Main Beach for close proximity to the boardwalk.
Santa Cruz is a relaxed college town with a friendly vibe and plenty of cheap eats. While you can find things to splurge on, it’s much more budget-friendly than many other northern California towns. Many of the best activities are free!

Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, CA, is a popular and free weekend destination known for its colorful sea glass that has been smoothed and polished by the ocean over time. It’s a 3.5 hour drive north of San Francisco along the beautifully scenic Pacific Coast Highway and one of the best places to visit in California in November.
If you’re specifically interested in collecting sea glass, an almost meditative hobby , the fall and winter months, November especially, can actually be great times to visit, as stormier weather can bring in more glass to the beach. Just be prepared for wet and potentially chilly conditions as the weather can be unpredictable with a mix of rainy and cloudy days. The coastline around Glass Beach is stunning year-round, with rugged cliffs, dramatic rock formations, and crashing waves.
There are many other things to do near Fort Bragg as well., such as visiting the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, Mendocino Headlands State Park, and the Skunk Train. The Skunk Train, officially known as the California Western Railroad, is a historic railroad that runs from the waterfront through the Redwood Forest to Willits and is a popular attraction for those who want to learn more about the most famous logging route in California.
There are several possible accommodations depending on your interests, including hotels, inns, vacation rentals, bed and breakfasts and even camping if you enjoy a more outdoorsy experience. Some good options, depending on your budget, include the North Cliff Hotel, Beachcomber Motel, Shoreline Cottages, and Pine Beach Inn.
Redwoods National Park

If you’re looking to soak up California’s famed natural beauty, head to Redwoods National and State Park in November. Given the parks’ proximity to the coastline, the weather stays moderate, even leading into wintertime, plus the moody, low-hanging fog and light rays make the endless forests look even more magical.
The best way to soak in the Redwoods—the tallest living organism on the planet!—is to explore the parks on foot. As an added benefit, the trails here will be much quieter than in the busy summer season. For example, head to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park to hike on the Fern Canyon Trail , where, true to its name, you can hike down a lush canyon, totally covered in ferns. The scenery here looks otherworldly—so otherworldly, in fact, that it’s been used as a filming location for The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Keep an eye out while you’re on the trail—it’s a great place to see elk!
There’s a total of four parks in the Redwoods system, each of which is worth visiting, so it’s best to carve out three to four days to enjoy the parks.
This area’s remoteness is a double-edge sword—on one hand, the parks are quiet and feel untouched. On the other hand, they can be hard to get to! The closest major airport is in San Francisco, a five and half hour drive south of the Redwoods.
The parks are fairly spread out across the northern California coast, so make your home base somewhere that’s relatively central—for example, the charming town of Trinidad. For example, the Trinidad Inn is a cozy hotel, nestled in a beautiful redwood forest, that’s perfect for resting up between your adventures.
Unlike most remote places, lodging and food is generally pretty affordable in the Redwoods. And, given that most of your activities will involve staring up at wonder at these massive trees, the activities here are pretty much totally free, thus making it one of the best places to visit in California in November.

Redding, California is arguably the best hidden gem in the state and is easily one of the best places to visit in California in November. Located in the northernmost part of the state surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, November is the perfect time to visit. You’ll enjoy the best temperatures and get to see fall foliage.
A small airport is located in redding with flights from other major cities on the west coast. However, it might be easier for you to fly into Sacramento International Airport instead and rent a car. It’s a 2 and a half hour drive north from there, but the drive is beautiful and you will need a car for your adventures anyways.
Plan to stay in Redding for at least 4 full days. You won’t be bored! Book your stay at a hotel in town like the Sheraton Redding Hotel at the Sundial Bridge or the Americana Modern Hotel. Alternatively, there’s plenty of camping options nearby!
There are so many fun things to do in Redding to choose from! Rent e-bikes and explore downtown Redding. Make sure to cross the Sundial Bridge! Then, you can go kayaking on Whiskeytown Lake or on Lake Redding and enjoy the colors of the trees surrounding you during November.
You’ll also want to get out of town to explore the amazing nature around Redding. Chase waterfalls at the numerous falls close by. Go hiking at Castle Crags State Park and go on a tour of Lake Shasta Caverns.
Spend at least a day or two at Lassen Volcanic National Park where you’ll hike in the mountains and check out hydrothermal activity, like steam vents and mud pots. It’s like a mini Yellowstone!
Your entire trip to Redding will be fairly inexpensive, as much of your time is spent enjoying nature. While most activities are for the outdoorsy person, there really is something for everyone. Find out for yourself and explore Redding, California this November.

The most well known destination in the US for wine lovers is Napa Valley, California, and this lovely area makes for one of the best places to visit in California in November. If you love wine, then you’ve probably always dreamed of visiting. But did you know that there’s tons to do for non-wine drinkers too? Check out Napa this November and see why.
The weather is perfect in November. The average high is 66 degrees and it’s just before the rainy season starts, so you’ll likely catch lots of sunshine. Plus, Christmas celebrations ramp up at the end of the month, and Napa Valley sure knows how to celebrate Christmas! A Napa day trip from nearby San Francisco is a good option, but it also has enough to enjoy for an entire week!
Getting to Napa is easy. Start by flying into the nearby San Francisco International Airport. From there either rent a car or hire a driver to get you an hour north of the city. Once you’re in town you don’t have to have a car as there are plenty of Ubers or shuttles to use. Plus, if you plan to enjoy the wine, you won’t be driving anyways.
Napa is definitely known for being on the pricier side, but it doesn’t have to be. Plan to stay at a VRBO or a cute little Inn like the Rustridge Ranch & Winery to save some money. Want to experience a resort without spending the money? Buy a day pass to one of the nearby resorts, starting at just $35!
Explore downtown Napa, shopping in the boutiques and eating at the gourmet restaurants. Ride through the valley on the Napa Wine Train. And cap off the trip with a day at one of the numerous spas, or by taking an air balloon ride above the rolling hills. And of course, spend plenty of time at the numerous vineyards.

Visiting Yosemite in November will allow you to access the entire National Park before some areas are closed off for the winter season including Tuolumne Meadows/Tioga Roads, which are really beautiful regions of Yosemite to check out.
Due to the stunning fall colors in the park, November is one of the best times of year to visit Yosemite. It is for sure one of the most romantic places to visit in the USA at this time of year. The fall colors usually stick around until the first snowfall of the year. If you are visiting in the first two weeks of November you are sure to see them.
You can see fall colors all over Yosemite but we would recommend the following areas for the absolute best colors: Yosemite Valley, Glacier Point Road, Wawona, Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Road. Don’t miss Vernal Falls, it is one of our favorite short hikes in Yosemite as it is really beautiful. It is 1.6 miles to hike to Vernal Fall footbridge which will take around 1 hour or allow 3 hours if you want to make it to the summit of Vernal Falls (2.4 miles).
We camped in November inside the Park. There are 2 campgrounds open in Yosemite in November: Camp 4 and Upper Pines which cost $36 a night. If we went back we would elect to stay in a cozy cabin at this time of year like those at Evergreen Lodge in Groveland near Yosemite.
There are dozens of stunning hikes and fun things to do in Yosemite (including Yosemite Falls, Tunnel View and El Capitan) so we recommend staying at least 2 nights / 3 days. Being a National Park, it is one of the most affordable activities you can do in California.
It costs $35 per vehicle for seven consecutive days in the park. If you plan on visiting multiple National Parks, we recommend getting an America the Beautiful Pass which costs $80 per vehicle and allows you to visit as many National Parks as you want in a year.
Note: A car is necessary to visit Yosemite. It is around a 4 hour drive from Los Angeles or around a 3 hour drive from San Francisco .

Santa Barbara is one of the best places to visit in California in November because you’ll escape the summer crowds but still enjoy temperatures in the high 60s. If you live in Los Angeles, the 95-mile journey takes about 1-1/2 hours to drive. A three to four-day stay allows you to relax, recharge, and enjoy the mellow coastal lifestyle.
Santa Barbara is located north of Channel Islands National Park, and a November visit is ideal for a whale-watching tour. In fact, it’s one of the best places to go whale watching on the west coast. You can see gray and humpback whales in the Channel during the whale migration. You may even seen the rarer fin and blue whales too.
Casa Jardin offers inexpensive accommodation downtown if you’re traveling on a budget. Here, you must browse the ten-block promenade of State Street. It has patio restaurants, quaint boutiques, and vintage theaters such as the Arlington, Granada, and Lobero.
A must-see, a Santa Barbara County Courthouse tour costs nothing but allows you to see a stunning Spanish structure. The mural room mesmerizes visitors with its floor-to-ceiling paintings, and the staircase is beautifully tiled.
Be sure to take the staircase to the roof of the clock tower to enjoy panoramic views of the city and mountains.
Afterward, take a stroll to Sterns Wharf, an old structure that extends beyond West Beach. The Wharf is home to an aquarium, galleries, gift shops, and seafood restaurants. If you’re hungry, head to Moby Dick for fresh oysters and amazing views of the Pacific Ocean.

Morro Bay is a quaint beach town along California’s Central Coast and a favorite spot among visitors for its laid-back vibes. A town known for its marina, sea lions, surfing, fresh seafood, and the massive Morro Rock, it makes for the perfect weekend getaway. Two to three days is the right amount of time to see the different sights in Morro Bay and include some relaxation at the beach. It is one of the best places to visit in California in November.
One of the top activities in Morro Bay is to take a stroll along the waterfront and marina popping into the various shops, bars, and restaurants. For a longer walk, continue past the tiny downtown and head toward Morro Rock to see it up close. At the northernmost point of the marina, you might even get to watch sea otters playing.
For those that like to stay active, kayaking in Morro Bay is great as the water is super calm here. Or you can head over to Montana de Oro and go for a leisurely hike along the coastal bluffs and view a gorgeous section of the coast that will make your jaw drop.
November is a wonderful time to visit Morro Bay as the summer crowds are gone and it is still warm enough to spend time outdoors. The temperatures average between 65 F and 75 F and sometimes even in the 80s.
There are several small hotels, inns, and camping options nearby, many of them budget friendly. The Beach Bungalow Inn is a great choice as it is in walking distance of all the main attractions and waterfront.
To get here, you can fly into San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP) 30-minutes away or make it a road trip and drive 3 hours from either Los Angeles or San Jose, California.

Los Angeles is a one of the best places to visit in California in November because the weather is generally mild, allowing visitors to explore everywhere and everything the city has to offer. Whether you want to take a budget-friendly approach or splurge on a few luxurious activities in Los Angeles , the City of Angels has something for everyone.
Los Angeles is famous for its Hollywood glamor, beaches, hiking, food scene, and walking and biking tours. A five-day stay in Los Angeles in November allows visitors to see some of these highlights at a leisurely pace.
On the budget-friendly side, there are several free iconic things to do in Los Angeles in November. Visitors can start the day in Griffith Park to get a glimpse of the Hollywood sign, walk along Hollywood Boulevard, stop at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, and then head to the Grove and the connecting Farmer’s Market for lunch. But there is so much more to see and do in Los Angeles!
Because Los Angeles is such a big city, there are different price point hotels across the city. This means there is something for everyone’s budget. While staying in Los Angeles, consider staying in a central location like Downtown Los Angeles , Beverly Hills, or Hollywood.
Pro Tip: Los Angeles is a sprawling area. Although the Los Angeles transit system is improving, visitors should still rent a car. It is much easier to get around Los Angeles in a car.
Channel Islands National Park
![california travel in november Several rocks in the water. #california #fall #novembertravel](https://i0.wp.com/homeroomtravel.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/California-November-04.jpg?resize=700%2C467&ssl=1)

November on the central California coast might be the most magical time of the year. The summer tourists are long gone, the days are cool but still sunny, and it is ripe for adventuring.
This is why exploring the Channel Islands National Park is one of California’s best places to visit in November.
In order to get to this coastal gem, you’ll want to find your way to Ventura, California, about an hour outside of Los Angeles. While not as expensive as nearby Santa Barbara , it’s still a decently pricey city. I would recommend three to four days for your trip to enjoy the beaches, vibes, and islands.
When planning your trip to the Channel Islands, the first decision to be made is if you’re going to camp. If so, you need to reserve a campsite. Wait to do anything until that is locked in. You can book your ticket on the ferry from here, which will transport you to the island. (If you’re not camping, you do a day trip to whatever island you want. Choose the earliest and latest times to maximize your trip if camping.)
Once on the island, it’s your oyster. You can hike, kayak, or snorkel. And if you’re on the island for more than one day, you can do all of it! We got to kayak and hike and let me tell you, both were phenomenal!
The Channel Islands are one of the least visited National Parks in America, and it is one of the best places to visit in California in November.

Joshua Tree National Park

November is one of the most ideal months to visit Joshua Tree National Park. This is because the weather in this desert landscape is most pleasant in the fall and spring. Most visitors should plan to spend one to two days in this national park. One day is enough to see the park’s highlights like the namesake Joshua trees, cool rock formations like Skull Rock, and the cholla cactus garden.
Plan to stay overnight if you want to watch a beautiful desert sunset or enjoy the park’s spectacular stargazing opportunities. Stick around for a second day if you want to do some hiking or rock climbing. These things make it one of the nest places to visit in California in November.
If you plan to fly to Joshua Tree National Park, the nearest airport is in Palm Springs. The nearest major airports are in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Las Vegas, all of which are 3 to 3.5 hours away from the park. Whether you fly or drive to this southern California destination, you will need a car to experience Joshua Tree National Park. There isn’t any public transportation to or within the park.
Visitors have several options for lodging. The campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park are the only lodging available within the park. There are more camping opportunities nearby, but visitors who don’t want to rough it will likely find the most places to stay in Palm Springs.
Joshua Tree National Park is an incredibly affordable destination. The entrance fee is $30 per vehicle for a whole week of park access and the campgrounds only cost $15-25 per night. There are no dining options within the park, so you can pack your own food or look for budget-friendly restaurants nearby.

Long Beach in November offers a lovely escape for travelers seeking a perfect blend of coastal relaxation with plenty of attractions. The weather is pleasantly mild with an average high of 73°F and a low of 52°F with mostly sunny days, making it ideal for strolling along the scenic waterfront, exploring the bustling downtown, and enjoying outdoor activities without the summer crowds.
For the best experience, a 3-4 day stay is recommended. This duration allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture and take in the diverse attractions Long Beach has to offer. There are plenty of fun activities to explore from dining on 2nd Street, thrift shopping, wandering through the Shoreline Village, or visiting the museums.
Explore the historic Queen Mary (which hosts a variety of music festivals and other holiday events in November), visit the Aquarium of the Pacific, or take a relaxing harbor cruise. Duffy Boats are a fun and affordable experience, especially with a group, and are never too crowded at this time of year, thus why Long Beach is one of the best places to visit in California in November.
Visiting Long Beach can cost anywhere from $150 to $250 per day, covering lodging, meals, transportation, and activities. For accommodations, the best place to stay is near the waterfront and downtown area. Luckily, there are plenty of budget-friendly places to stay in Long Beach, such as the Beachrunners Inn to keep costs on the lower end.
Long Beach is easy to access with its own local airport (LGB) or a short drive from LAX. While having a car gives you more flexibility, Long Beach is decently well-connected by public transit and if you stay downtown, most attractions are within walking distance. Overall, a November visit to Long Beach is an excellent choice , providing a rich blend of coastal beauty, cultural exploration, and festive charm.
Death Valley

Many travelers have Death Valley on their bucket list, and it is one of the best places to visit in California in November. Death Valley is known as one of the hottest places on Earth. During the summertime, the heat is unbearable, but in November, the weather is much cooler, and you can explore everything the park has to offer more comfortably.
You should spend at least one day in Death Valley to see the main attractions the park has to offer. In the morning, you can catch the sunrise at the Mesquite flat sand dunes, take a short walk to a beautiful lookout point, Zabriskie Point and visit the Golden Canyon trail, which is famous for being featured in a Star Wars movie.
At night, you’ll get to view and sleep under incredible unobstructed views of the stars.
You need a car to visit Death Valley. Sometimes tours are offered from Las Vegas, but your best bet is driving yourself and then considering some Ranger lead walks through the park. Staying inside Death Valley is your best option since there are not many hotels around the outside of the park. There are four lodges and nine campgrounds in the park.
The admission price can range from $30 per vehicle and needs to be paid at a welcome center, or you can use a National Park pass if you have one.
Remember to always bring snacks and extra water to Death Valley National Park. Also, make sure you check your car is in good working condition and that you have at least a half tank of gas. There are very few service areas.
San Diego

San Diego is one of the best places to visit in California in November, as it sees warm temperatures year-round. In November, highs are around 70 degrees, so it’s pleasant to explore outside and visit the beach boardwalks for a walk.
There’s so much to see and do in San Diego that visitors can easily fill a week, though San Diego is also a great city for a winter long weekend trip. Once in San Diego, there are many inexpensive or free things to do. Take a walk on the Mission Beach boardwalk, explore the Bayfront area, hike in Torrey Pines State Park, visit Balboa Park, eat delicious Italian food in Little Italy, and venture up to La Jolla to see the sea lions.
Fly into San Diego International Airport or drive to San Diego if coming from LA or Las Vegas. Once in the city, it’s easy to get around via Uber or Lyft. Renting a car is even more convenient, though may be a bit pricier. Most destinations are within a 10-15 minute drive of central points.
There are many fantastic areas to stay in San Diego. If seeking nightlife, stay in the Gaslamp District, where many late-night bars and clubs are. If you’re looking for a laid-back beach vibe, stay in Pacific Beach or Mission Beach. San Diego is generally an expensive place to stay, and hotels can be pricey. Since most areas of interest are not far from city center, you should look for hotels that fit your budget first.

Is November a good time to visit Northern California?
Yes! November might be my favorite month in Northern California. The leaves are finally changing, and the season’s best colors can be seen this month. It’s not crowded, and the weather is usually very nice. This is a great time to visit a place that normally gets too hot ( Sacramento , Gold Country ) or crowded ( San Francisco , Napa Valley ) in the summer.
What is the weather like in Northern California in November?
It’s finally cooled off enough to get out those sweaters and scarves, but it’s generally dry and sunny enough to spend time outdoors. The rainy season starts in November, so it is possible to have cold, rainy days. But sunny days with highs in the 60s and 70s are more likely. In the Sierra Nevada (think Lake Tahoe and Yosemite), it can be quite cold in November, so plan accordingly.
Here are my picks for what to do in Northern California in November. I’d love to hear yours!
Traveling in Northern California in November:
— Spend a few days on the coast. Try a visit to Mendocino for beautiful, rugged beaches; excellent state park; and amazing night skies. Visit the Botanical Garden. November is a great time to go because it’s usually dry and less foggy than in the summer.
— Spend a long weekend at Point Reyes National Seashore . I love this getaway because it’s quiet, beautiful, and near other great places like Samuel P. Taylor State Park.
— Enjoy seasonal fun in the foothills and Gold Country. See how to visit Apple Hill below.
— Go leaf peeping! This is a beautiful time to see the leaves changing in Northern California. Here’s a guide to autumn leaves in California.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by This Is My Happiness 🌿 (@jennafrancisco) on Nov 13, 2019 at 6:20am PST
— Go to Napa Valley. Wine country needs visitors right now, and there are plenty of wineries doing outdoor wine tasting. Check out my list of 30 best wineries in Napa Valley . After the fires of the past few years, wine country welcomes visitors!
Visiting the wine country is a no-brainer for me in the fall in Northern California. The grape vines change color in November, and thanks to the color differences among grape varieties, you can see a sort of rainbow of colors in the vineyards.
For example, in some places in Napa Valley , a hilltop view allows you to see differences in the vines — patches of purple, red, orange, and yellow depending on what grapes are planted in each section. Add to that the changing leaves of the trees, and you have the most beautiful time of year to visit the wine country. Try the wineries in the Stag’s Leap District of Napa Valley for beautiful fall colors.
![california travel in november what to do California in November](https://thisismyhappiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/napa-fall.jpg)
Salmon spawn
The eastern Sierra are beautiful at this time of year; aspen trees have turned bright yellow, and at Taylor Creek, kokanee salmon make their way up the creek to spawn. If you’re lucky, you can see a bear hanging out in the creek looking for his or her next meal. The hiking trails here are short and easy but a lovely way to see fall colors in the mountains–go soon for the best fall color. (Related: 8 hikes with kids at Tahoe )
In the Sacramento area, try the Nimbus Fish Hatchery or anywhere along the American River ( Effie Yeaw Nature Center park is another good option) to see salmon making their way back up the river.
A visit to Apple Hill, near Placerville
![california travel in november what to do in northern california in november](https://thisismyhappiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/DSC_0075-1024x674.jpg)
I love the foothills in the fall! The air is crisp, the trees are shades of orange and red, and farms are open for visitors. Perhaps the best known place to visit is Apple Hill, a hilly area outside Placerville (about 40 minutes east of Sacramento) where farms share their bounty in the fall. Try Kids Inc for fall colors and kids’ activities, Apple Pantry Farm for amazing pie, and Rainbow Orchards for their famous apple cider donuts.
My favorite stop is 24Carrot Farm where you can buy seasonal organic produce at their beautiful farmstand and pick your own pumpkins and sunflowers.
Find out more here: a day trip to Apple Hill . Note that this area is packed on weekends, so either go on a weekday or leave early!
![california travel in november What to do in Northern California in November](https://thisismyhappiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/DSC_0084-681x1024.jpg)
Be aware that this place gets packed on weekends! In fact, while driving by twice last week, I noticed traffic like I’ve never seen before. Go on a weekday or go very early and hit the lesser-known spots.

See the Aspen trees in the Sierra
![california travel in november What to do in Northern California in October](https://thisismyhappiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Tahoe-Fall-172-1024x768.jpg)
(Check the status before you go–these trees may drop their leaves by early November). Drive up to Lake Tahoe or Hope Valley to see the beautiful yellow leaves of the aspen trees. Not only is the yellow color striking against the white trunks and blue sky, but also the way the leaves vibrate in the breeze is mesmerizing!
Normally I’d recommend going to Taylor Creek at Lake Tahoe to see the aspen and the salmon run, but as mentioned below, that area has been closed this fall. Try the Lam Watah Nature Trail and the loop around Spooner Lake.
Here are more tips for fall color in Northern California.
Nature Events at Effie Yeaw Nature Center, Sacramento
I love this nature center located in a quiet corner of Sacramento on the American River. Here you can see the salmon going back up the river to spawn in November after walking the trails and maybe spotting deer and turkeys. The visitor center holds regular events for kids, teens, and adults, especially on weekends.
Where: Effie Yeaw Nature Center, Sacramento
When: various dates in November
Cost: $5 and up
Festival of Lights, Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden
If you have not been to the Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden , put it on your list. Visiting on a sunny day was one of our favorite travel experiences in Northern California! Not only are the gardens beautiful and interesting, but you’ll also be treated to amazing views of the sea from the cliffs.
The Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden’s Annual Festival of Lights takes place every weekend from late November through mid December. Tens of thousands of lights arranged in artistic displays transform these beautiful garden into a place of wonder. Don’t miss the succulent garden, which morphs into an underwater scene. Note that no dogs are allowed at the festival, and reserving advanced tickets is required.

![california travel in november Soil Born Farms](https://thisismyhappiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/DSC_0021-2-1024x681.jpg)
One of my favorite things to do in fall is explore local farms. The changing leaves and seasonal produce make them so beautiful. One easy stop is Soil Born Farms, right off Highway 50 in Sacramento. If you’re passing by the city or staying in the area, make time for a visit to this farm, which is open to the public daily except Sunday but has special events on Saturdays.
Saturday mornings at the farm include freshly-baked goods, live music, yoga, produce from the farmstand, and locally roasted coffee.
Their guided bird walks take you around American River Ranch where you’ll observe a variety of resident and migrating birds and possibly other critters and plant life along the way. This morning walk is perfect for families and beginner to intermediate birdwatchers.

I love those two regions, too. I’ve been to Mendocino only once but it is a special part of our beautiful state.
Thanks for sharing! I agree that November is a great time to explore Northern CA. It’s also a great time to go camping at one of the hundreds of beautiful parks, especially in early November. I have been to the Hip Hop Dance Fest many times and it is amazing! It has become a pre-Thanksgiving tradition in my family.

12 Best Places to Visit in California in Winter
Written by Lisa Alexander Updated Jan 2, 2024 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )
In television shows and movies, California appears to be a place of endless summer, where denizens enjoy outdoor activities and year-round sunshine. In reality, most of the state (except for Southern California and the desert areas) experiences some kind of winter weather, although this season is usually much gentler in California than elsewhere in the country.
Thanks to its Mediterranean climate, the winter season brings rain to California's lower elevations and snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Southern California gets less wintertime rain than Northern California. In Palm Springs and other desert areas, the winter rain is negligible.
You can take advantage of the perfect winter weather in Palm Springs or the balmy climate of San Diego and Los Angeles. Other top winter destinations include the ski resorts of Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Lakes. San Francisco, the Napa Valley, and the Mendocino region offer enough cultural attractions to keep you busy in Northern California during the winter.
Plan a fabulous vacation with our list of the best places to visit in California in winter.
1. Palm Springs
2. mammoth lakes, 3. san diego, 4. lake tahoe, 5. los angeles, 6. san francisco, 7. yosemite national park, 9. napa valley, 10. mendocino, 11. joshua tree national park, 12. sonoma county, map of places to visit in california in winter.
![california travel in november Palm Springs with the snowcapped San Jacinto Mountains in the background](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-palm-springs.jpg)
Palm Springs has been a popular wintertime destination since the 1920s when the area's resorts began catering to Hollywood celebrities.
This stylish resort town, sheltered by the San Jacinto Mountains, is still one of the best vacation spots in California . For a sunny getaway with beautiful scenery and a relaxing ambiance, it's hard to beat Palm Springs.
During the months of December, January, and February, you will enjoy Palm Springs's perfect weather: blue skies and daytime winter temperatures in the low 70s Fahrenheit. The sun shines nearly every day of the year (the average is 350 days of sunshine).
Taking advantage of the climate, the resorts here feature outdoor swimming pools, sundecks, golf courses, and tennis courts. Other things to do in Palm Springs include hiking , gourmet dining, and shopping.
Wintertime events give you more reasons to visit. In January, the Palm Springs International Film Festival screens films and documentaries from over 60 different countries. A highlight of the festival is when Hollywood A-listers strut down the red carpet to attend the Film Awards event.
In mid-February, Modernism Week celebrates the city's mid-century modern architecture. This 11-day festival includes home tours, walking tours, film screenings, lectures, nightly parties, and live music.
It takes around two hours to drive (about 100 miles away) from Los Angeles to Palm Springs.
![california travel in november Horseshoe Lake, Mammoth Lakes](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-mammoth-lakes.jpg)
If you love mountains and downhill skiing, definitely add Mammoth Lakes to your list of places to visit in the winter. The Mammoth Lakes area dazzles you with its dramatic High Sierra landscapes and its off-the-beaten-path appeal .
Because of the high elevation, snow arrives early at Mammoth Lakes. The ski season usually begins at the end of November. With its peak at an altitude of 11,000 feet, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area gets around 400 inches of snowfall a year.
Mammoth Mountain Ski Area is one of the best ski resorts in California , thanks to its expansive terrain of over 3,500 acres with 175 trails for alpine skiing. You will also appreciate the wide choice of lodging options and restaurants in the Mammoth Lakes area.
The famous Mammoth Lakes hot springs are another draw during the wintertime. The Travertine Hot Springs (natural geothermal pools) site in Bridgeport is open to the public for free. The town of Bishop also has hot springs.
In the historic mining town of Benton, The Inn at Benton Hot Springs provides bed-and-breakfast accommodations on a 1,255-acre family-owned ranch. The property includes natural mineral water hot springs. You can choose from various overnight lodging options: guest rooms in the inn, cottages, a charming bungalow, and camping sites with private hot tubs supplied with natural mineral water.
![california travel in november Balboa Park](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-san-diego.jpg)
As California's southernmost city, San Diego enjoys balmy weather year-round. The mild winters bring plenty of sunshine and temperate days, with average highs around 66 degrees Fahrenheit. Winter is not warm enough for sunbathing but is ideal for walks along the beach.
Thanks to the sprinkling of wintertime rain, the gardens of San Diego look ravishing during the months of December through February. The 1,200-acre Balboa Park wows you with its lovely gardens, hiking trails, and cultural attractions including 18 museums.
If you're looking for things to do in San Diego during winter, be sure to put the Christmas Tree Lighting in November and the December Nights holiday festivities on your list. Both events take place at Balboa Park.
A must-see attraction in San Diego is the Mission San Diego de Alcalá , a National Historic Landmark that dates back to 1769 and was the first Spanish mission to be established in California. The mission grounds incorporate a tranquil garden that is lovely during the wintertime.
![california travel in november View over Lake Tahoe from the ski slopes](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-lake-tahoe.jpg)
Lake Tahoe invites you to step into a winter wonderland as soon as snow begins to fall in November or December. Blankets of powder crown the mountain peaks surrounding Lake Tahoe, with its expanse of deep blue waters glistening under the cool winter sunshine.
Although the Lake Tahoe area gets plenty of snowfall, the climate is relatively mild for an alpine environment. Daily high temperatures from December through February are in the low 40 degrees Fahrenheit. With around 300 days of sunshine a year, Lake Tahoe's winter season offers the chance for many gorgeous bright days.
The top attractions in Lake Tahoe during wintertime include downhill skiing. The Lake Tahoe area has many top ski resorts . Among the most famous world-class resorts are Heavenly, Palisades Tahoe, and Northstar California.
Other things to do in Lake Tahoe during winter include cross-country skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, and sleigh rides.
![california travel in november View of palm trees and downtown Los Angeles](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-los-angeles.jpg)
Soak up the stylish SoCal culture, while you bask in the winter sunshine of Los Angeles. Like most of Southern California, the rainy season occurs in the fall and winter (typical of a Mediterranean climate). However, it rains much less here during the winter than in Northern California, usually only rains for six or seven days out of the entire month.
Besides the mild wintertime weather, Los Angeles boasts world-class cultural attractions . You can expect to find superb restaurants, fabulous shopping, and excellent art museums in addition to the famous sights of Hollywood .
Beautiful beaches are another draw of visiting Los Angeles. Even during winter, you can enjoy the beaches of Los Angeles . In winter, you can take quiet walks along the shoreline and dine at beachfront restaurants.
Winter is a wonderful time to visit the 130-acre Botanical Gardens at The Huntington near Pasadena (10 miles away from Los Angeles). You can explore 16 themed gardens, such as the Desert Garden, Japanese Garden, and Shakespeare Garden. The Desert Garden features aloes that bloom with dazzling red flowers in wintertime, while the Camellia Garden is in peak bloom in January and February.
![california travel in november Cable cars in San Francisco](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-san-francisco.jpg)
If you don't mind a little rain (or a lot, depending on the year), the winter is a great time to visit San Francisco. This sophisticated city amazes you with its wide array of cultural attractions and things to do such as museums, theaters, gourmet restaurants, and upscale shopping centers.
Winter weather in San Francisco ranges from mild sunny days to heavy rain. In December and January, the average high temperatures are in the high 50s Fahrenheit, and it rains an average of eight days out of the month. In February, it starts to get slightly warmer with the first signs of spring (cherry blossoms) on the way.
On those chilly Northern California winter days, you can wander through the art galleries of the SFMOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in downtown San Francisco or the de Young Fine Arts Museum in Golden Gate Park , where magnolias and camellias bloom during wintertime. In a glorious setting overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and the bay, the Legion of Honor presents a fine arts collection along with temporary exhibits.
If you are visiting San Francisco with kids , the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park and the innovative exhibits of the Exploratorium are not to be missed. The Aquarium of the Bay at Pier 39 keeps kids busy discovering colorful underwater scenes. Sea lions hang out at the nearby Pier 39 docks. Youngsters may get the giggles when watching the marine mammals' floppy movements or listening to their loud barking sounds.
During the holiday season, it's fun to go shopping at Union Square in downtown San Francisco. A giant Christmas tree and festive lights decorate Union Square, which also sports an ice-skating rink. All the department stores and boutiques around Union Square, as well as on the nearby Maiden Lane and Grant Avenue, present enchanting window displays during Christmastime.
![california travel in november Yosemite National Park](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-yosemite-national-park.jpg)
With a dusting of powder snow, the glacier-carved Yosemite Valley is transformed into a magical wintertime scene. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features iconic rock formations like Half Dome and El Capitan, which are snowcapped throughout the winter months.
The winter season is one of the best times to visit Yosemite National Park because it is the least crowded time. This quieter season allows tourists to appreciate the peacefulness and beauty of the natural scenery. However, it can be a challenge to get to Yosemite in wintertime if there are road closures due to snow storms.
Yosemite's historic ski area is accessible from Glacier Point Road. Opened in 1935, Badger Pass Ski Area was the first ski area established in California and is still one of the state's top ski resorts . Badger Pass Ski Area offers opportunities for downhill (alpine), snowboarding, and cross-country skiing, as well as snow tubing and snowshoeing.
During the winter, The Ahwahnee Hotel dazzles you with its magical snowy setting and traditional holiday decorations. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and classified as a National Historic Landmark , this prestigious 4-star hotel is renowned for its magnificent Art and Crafts architecture featuring wood-beamed ceilings and stone fireplaces.
The Ahwahnee Hotel's elegant chandelier-illuminated dining hall is transformed into a marvelous venue for the annual Bracebridge Dinner to celebrate Christmas. Inspired by 17th-century English feasts, this costumed Christmas pageant features a seven-course menu, candlelit ambiance, musical theater entertainment, and classic Christmas carols.

![california travel in november Bixby Bridge in Big Sur](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2023/12/california-best-places-to-visit-in-winter-big-sur-bridge.jpg)
The majestic beauty of Big Sur takes your breath away. This picturesque stretch of coastline is tucked away between the dramatic Santa Lucia Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It feels remote, although it's too well-known to be called a hidden gem.
Arriving here requires a harrowing cliffside drive, but that doesn't deter the masses of tourists during the high season. During summer, the crowds feel more suited to an amusement park than a place to appreciate nature. Sometimes, you can't even find parking in the lots near popular hiking trails or at state park entrances.
The secret to enjoying Big Sur is visiting during the off-season. In the winter, you can soak up the beauty and peacefulness of Big Sur. The air feels fresh and cool, and the redwood forests flourish with leafy ferns and wild mushrooms. Waterfalls gush at this time of year, the rainy season.
During the winter, you can take your time exploring the highlights of Big Sur such as the Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park which is famous for the iconic McWay Falls , the legendary Hearst Castle perched high above the coastline, and the historic Henry Miller Library where cultural events and music performances take place.
The Deetjen's Inn is a charming rustic-chic lodge that dates to the 1930s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Even if you don't stay here, it's worth sampling the gourmet cuisine at the inn's romantic candlelit restaurant.
The ultimate place to stay is at the luxurious Post Ranch Inn . For a pretty penny, this five-star hotel delivers contemporary lodge-style accommodations and panoramic ocean views.
![california travel in november Lush hills in Napa Valley](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-napa-valley.jpg)
Unwind and pamper yourself in the Napa Valley. This upscale destination ranks high on the list of weekend getaways from San Francisco and also draws visitors from all over the world.
The winter is an ideal time to sample the area's fine dining and spa treatments. You can also take advantage of lower rates at some of the best hotels in Napa as well as the top resorts that charge notoriously high prices in the busy season.
Dining in Napa
The Napa Valley is home to some of the country's best restaurants. Are you a foodie? Then you will love the wide range of dining options, from classic French to trendy modern restaurants.
If you can get a reservation and are willing to pay the price, treat yourself to an unforgettable meal at The French Laundry in Yountville, which boasts three Michelin stars .
Other renowned restaurants in Yountville include Michelin-starred Bouchon , a traditional French bistro, and Bistro Jeanty , a charming restaurant that specializes in home-style French cooking. In the town of Napa, La Toque offers Michelin-starred gastronomic fare, and Brix serves farm-to-table cuisine in a casual dining room or on an outdoor patio (al fresco dining is possible in the winter).
Set on a wooded hillside above the Napa Valley, the Auberge du Soleil offers 5-star resort accommodations. The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil delights you with its Michelin-starred seasonal cuisine, served on a covered outdoor terrace overlooking the green rolling hills.
Spas in Napa
Except for the Auberge du Soleil, most hotel spas in the Napa Valley are open to the public. In the cute little town of Yountville, the b Spa at Bardessono Hotel offers massages, facials, and wellness treatments. Other noteworthy spa facilities include the luxurious Bella Capelli Spa in Napa; the Blue Water Day Spa in Napa; and the Spa Solage at the 4-star Solage resort in Calistoga.
The heated mineral water pools of Calistoga feel especially invigorating on cool winter days. Try the spa at Dr. Wilkinson's Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs in Calistoga where you can choose from massages, hydrotherapy, and mud baths.
Winter Events in Napa
Wintertime also brings interesting cultural events, such as the Napa Truffle Festival in mid-January, the Napa Lighted Art Festival from mid-January until mid-February, the Yountville International Short Film Festival in early February, and the Yountville Live gourmet food festival in mid-March.
![california travel in november Mendocino coastline](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-mendicino.jpg)
Thanks to the temperate Mediterranean climate, the weather in Mendocino can be as pleasant in winter as it is in summertime. In fact, the winter has the advantage of less coastal fog. As long as it's not raining, you can expect breathtaking blue skies, sweeping sea views, and refreshing ocean breezes.
From December through February, the average daily high temperatures are in the low 50s Fahrenheit, and the temperatures can dip down into the high 40s. Wear good hiking boots, and bundle up for walks through the woods or along the quiet coastal coves.
One of the top things to do in Mendocino is hiking in Van Damme State Park , which features miles of trails through a forested canyon with lush ferns that thrive during wintertime.
If you'd like to visit a Mendocino beach during wintertime, the one at Jug Handle State Natural Reserve is a good choice. A stunning sandy beach is hidden below cliff sides. This sheltered spot protects from the wind, making the beach an ideal place to sit back and admire the waves on a clear winter day.
Winter is the ideal time to sample the cuisine of Mendocino prepared from local ingredients, including an abundance of wild mushrooms. The winter rains allow the wild mushrooms to flourish in the Mendocino forests. Many local chefs take advantage of this gourmet bounty to prepare delicious dishes.
If you're looking for a nice meal, Café Beaujolais is known for its farm-to-table cuisine made from high-quality local ingredients, the MacCallum House Restaurant offers seasonal tasting menus and serves fabulous gourmet breakfast/brunch meals, and the upscale Trillium Cafe specializes in contemporary California cuisine.
Besides hiking and fine dining, you can also enjoy whale watching during the wintertime. Gray whales migrate along the Mendocino Coast from November through April; their spouts and tails can be spotted from the shore. The best places for whale watching are Mendocino Headlands State Park and the historic Point Arena Lighthouse .
Save time to wander around the quaint village of Mendocino . Its small downtown features lovely Victorians and little saltbox cottages dating back to the 1800s. Nowadays the historic buildings house inviting bed-and-breakfast accommodations (be sure to book ahead!), locally owned boutiques, and gourmet restaurants.
Other highlights of Mendocino include the Mendocino Hotel , dating to 1878, and the GoodLife Cafe & Bakery where locals and tourists gather for coffee and hearty breakfast meals.
The Mendocino Whale Festival takes place in March. Events are held in Mendocino, in the town of Little River, and Fort Bragg , the area's largest city.
![california travel in november Joshua Tree National Park in the winter](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-joshua-tree-national-park.jpg)
A captivating desert landscape, Joshua Tree National Park is worth a detour from Los Angeles (just a three-hour drive away.) Winter is a popular time to visit because the weather is ideal for hiking and rock climbing.
You can even go camping here in wintertime. It's a good idea to reserve a campsite in advance. The campgrounds tend to fill up during the high season (October through May).
Joshua Tree National Park is famous for its wildflowers , which begin to bloom as early as February in the lower elevations. The best place to check out the colorful blossoms is in Cottonwood Spring .
![california travel in november Coastline near Bodega Bay, California](https://www.planetware.com/wpimages/2021/12/california-best-places-to-visit-winter-sonoma-county.jpg)
Bodega Bay is a peaceful place to visit in Northern California's rural Sonoma County.
During the wintertime, Bodega Bay hosts some interesting events including a Chowder Day in January. The event includes chowder tastings from local restaurants, whale watching, and a chance to pick up fresh seafood at the waterfront.
In February, the Lake Sonoma Steelhead Festival celebrates the steelhead trout season, with entertaining activities and live music concerts.
Two film festivals take place in Sonoma County in March: the Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival , which presents documentary films made by independent filmmakers, and the Sonoma International Film Festival, which screens over 90 international films at venues in the town of Sonoma, all within easy walking distance of the historic central plaza.

November in San Francisco: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

November in San Francisco is a month with a lot of variables regarding what it will be like to travel there at that time. For the first week or two, you'll definitely enjoy the smaller crowds that time of year. Winter rains might start any time during the month, but it's not uncommon for skies to be clear, and the temperatures can be quite comfortable.
Around the middle of the month, things start to ramp up. Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, and many people also get the following Friday off work. If they aren't exhausting themselves shopping on Black Friday, they may be running around town instead. Check the Thanksgiving guide to find out what special events happen during that four-day weekend.
San Francisco Weather in November
November is one of San Francisco's wettest months. On average, that is. In some years, it's bright and pleasant. And in others, it starts to feel like it will never stop.
You'll have about 10 hours of sunlight per day to explore San Francisco in November.
- Average High Temperature: 63 F (17 C)
- Average Low Temperature: 50 F (10 C)
- Water Temperature: 55.2 F (12.9 C)
- Rain: 3.21 in (8.2 cm)
- Rainfall: 8.9 days
- Daylight: 10 hours
- Sunshine: 5.8 hours
- Humidity: 75 percent
- UV Index: 3
If you want to compare these weather conditions to what San Francisco is like the rest of the year, you can find that all in one place in the guide to typical San Francisco weather . Before you make your final plans and pack that suitcase, check the San Francisco weather forecast a few days in advance of your trip.
What to Pack
Be prepared for moderate temperatures and bring some rain gear just in case. For that, a hooded jacket is a better idea. Umbrellas are hard to carry in a crowd and messy when you're not using them.
Layers are also a strategy, a lot of them, so you can adjust to match the weather. And no matter what your outer layers are, you may be happy you took along a pair of thin tights in your day bag to slip on in case you feel cold.
Unless you live in the area, you probably won't believe how much San Francisco weather predictions can change. Check the averages to get a sense of what you should pack, and then re-check the forecast and a couple of days before your trip and edit that list.
November Events in San Francisco
This is the short list of things that make it worth planning a November trip to San Francisco.
- Dickens Fair : The weekend before Thanksgiving marks the beginning of a Dickens of a celebration at the Cow Palace. You might think you stepped into a time warp when you walk in the door of this fun celebration of Christmas past.
- Christmas Events : The stores may have been pushing holiday merchandise since before Halloween, but skating rinks and other festivities start at Thanksgiving.
Things to Do in November
If you're looking for a fun concert, sporting event, or theatrical performance, try these resources:
- Watch a Basketball Game: Golden State Warriors play basketball in their new home in San Francisco's Chase Center, starting in 2019.
- Watch a Football Game: The San Francisco 49ers might be playing at home while you're there, but Levi Stadium is miles south in Santa Clara. Check the schedule on their website .
- Eat Dungeness Crab: The commercial fishing season for Dungeness crab begins in early November. Forget those pre-cooked frozen crabs at Fisherman's Wharf, and go for the fresh ones instead. You'll find them on the menu at many San Francisco restaurants. Climate and ocean conditions may cancel or delay the season, so it's best to check its current status on the Department of Fish and Wildlife website .
- Go Whale Watching: November is the end of humpback whale season around San Francisco. Find out how, when, and where in the San Francisco whale watching guide .
For a look at more local events, check the San Francisco Chronicle's entertainment section . You'll also find an extensive list of events at SF Weekly .
November Travel Tips
- Daylight Savings time ends in early November, which will push the clocks back and make it seem like the sun is setting earlier. Many local attractions may change their hours when that happens.
- Early November is a great time to get the best prices on hotels in San Francisco. With demand for hotels low this time of year, the rates become low as well.
- Before you choose travel dates, avoid the hotel sellouts and high prices conventions can cause. Check the convention calendar and try to avoid dates of events with more than 10,000 attendees.
- You might need an umbrella if it rains, but you also need to be prepared with things to do in case you need to get inside and stay dry. Use these tips for enjoying San Francisco in the rain .
- Sign up for a free account with Goldstar to get access to discounted tickets for local performances and save on some San Francisco attractions.

November 02, 2023
Napa Valley, renowned for its sprawling vineyards , holds a charm that transcends the allure of grapevines and the majestic restaurants. Visiting Napa in November offers a different palette of experiences for travelers that goes beyond some of the standard affairs. With the harvest hustle behind it, Napa dons a quieter, more reflective ambiance, making it an ideal time for visitors to explore its other natural and cultural treasures.
A Kaleidoscope of Autumn Colors
November in Napa is a photographer’s dream. The valley, shedding its emerald hue, is awash with the fiery reds, oranges, and yellows of fall. The temperature, a comfortable cool, is perfect for outdoor activities. Hiking enthusiasts can explore the trails at Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, where the autumn leaves create a canopy of colors. The crisp weather is also ideal for hot air balloon rides, offering a bird's eye view of the valley's autumn tapestry.
Culinary Delights
Napa is a culinary haven with a host of fine-dining establishments and quaint bistros that focus on farm-to-table experiences. November is the time when the local produce, untethered from the grapes' shadow, takes center stage. Seasonal menus feature ingredients like pomegranates, persimmons, and squashes. The Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Company provides a rustic Italian experience, with olive oil tastings that highlight the richness of the region's soil.

Arts and Culture Scene
Napa's cultural scene flourishes in November. The Napa Valley Film Festival usually held this month, showcases independent films, and the streets come alive with art events and gallery receptions. History buffs can wander through the Napa Valley Museum in Yountville or take a self-guided walking tour of historic downtown Napa to admire the beautifully preserved Victorian and contemporary architecture.
Wellness and Rejuvenation
For those seeking relaxation, Napa's natural hot springs in Calistoga offer a peaceful retreat. The cooler November weather is the perfect precursor for a soothing dip in the mineral-rich waters, known for their therapeutic properties. Spa treatments abound, utilizing local products like grape seed extracts for a touch of Napa without the vine.

Festivals and Community Events
November is rich with community events that celebrate the region's bounty and culture. The Napa Valley Turkey Chase, a Thanksgiving Day race, invites families to participate in a fun run through the picturesque landscapes. Meanwhile, the Napa Farmers Market remains a vibrant spot for locals and tourists to mingle, offering artisanal crafts, local produce, and gourmet foodstuffs.
Shopping and Leisure
As the holiday season approaches, Napa's boutiques and shops deck their halls with festive decor. Strolling through the towns, visitors can find unique gifts and handcrafted souvenirs. The Napa Premium Outlets and the charming shops in St. Helena are bustling with holiday deals and one-of-a-kind finds.
In conclusion, a trip to Napa in November is a sojourn for the soul. Beyond the vineyards lies a valley brimming with natural beauty, cultural experiences, and the warmth of a community that knows how to celebrate the richness of life. Whether it's through the art, the food, the wellness experiences, or simply the serene landscapes, Napa offers a myriad of ways to enjoy its harvest of wonders.

8 Fun Things To Do In November In California High Sierra
Alex Silgalis
8 fun things to do in November in California showing you pretty much have access to the full gambit of four-season fun in the High Sierra.
- Fun for All Ages
Eastern Sierra • Southern Sierra • Western Sierra
When people think of November, visions of clouds, rain, and cold usually come to mind. This couldn’t be further from the truth for the High Sierra. It’s true that small storms begin to peak their head, but for the most part, you can expect sunny skies with cool comfortable temps. With fun things to do in November in California High Sierra, you pretty much have access to the full gambit of four-season fun. To help, here’s 8 of our favorites to get your sense of adventure rolling.
![california travel in november opening day at Mammoth Mountain](https://cahighsierra.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Mammoth-Opening-Day-Snowmaking.jpeg)
Near the top of our list of fun things to do in November in California High Sierra is normally opening day at ski resorts across the state . It’s a time to celebrate the end of fall and the beginning of snow sliding season. At a hefty 11,053 feet above sea level, Mammoth Mountain provides the highest lift-served skiing in the state. Despite old man winter dishing out 400 inches of snow annually, they bolster that with snowmaking ensuring they are one of the first to open in the country. This year’s opening date is set for November 10 th .
Gobble Up Some Singletrack
![california travel in november mountain biking 007 trail in Bass Lake CA](https://cahighsierra.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/BassLakeMTB_P5220171_web.jpg)
For gravity fed fun, the High Sierra offers a cornucopia of mountain biking adventures to pick from . By November, some of the higher terrain maybe covered in snow, but the lower valleys and foothills of the Sierra provide some of the best conditions of the season. One of our fall favorite adventures is to tackle Bass Lake’s famed 007 trail, following it up with sunset views from Yosemite’s Glacier Point.
Enjoy A Cruise
![california travel in november](https://cahighsierra.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Couple_Walking_Down_Pier_Toward_Boats_Winter_Close-1.jpg)
Every season in Lake Tahoe has its merits. But when it comes to outright photogenic beauty, November is arguably the best. The fall colors are beginning to fade away. The first snows have frosted the highest peaks. The summer crowds are long gone, and you can still get out and enjoy its splendor. To take in the High Sierra’s crowning jewel from a different angle, consider booking a dinner cruise aboard the M.S. Dixie II . It’s the perfect time to enjoy All The Beauty & Fun… All To Yourself !
Climb A Rock
![california travel in november bouldering in Bishop](https://cahighsierra.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Buttermilks.jpg)
For some reason, as soon as winter arrives on the peaks of the Sierra, people think Bishop is snow-covered. It couldn’t be further from the truth. November through April is prime season for bouldering . Instead of the triple digit heat of summer, you’ll find pleasant temps in the 60s. What the famed granite walls are to Yosemite, bouldering is to Bishop . Start at the Happy & Sad Boulders then send your way through the Buttermilks . If you prefer to rope up, follow the sun on the cliffs of the Owens River Gorge .
Go For A Soak
![california travel in november Benton Hot Springs Inn Mono County California](https://cahighsierra.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Benton-Hot-Springs-Mono-County.jpg)
With the kids in school and work in full swing, a long weekend of rest and relaxation is a good idea. All across the Sierra Nevada you’ll find dozens of bubbling hot springs to soak away your stresses . The highest concentration of them are in the Eastern Sierra . One of our personal favorites is at the Inn at Benton Hot Springs . Miles away from civilization, each room gets their own private hot spring to enjoy while still getting a great night’s sleep. In the summer it can be challenging to get a reservation, but November is the perfect time to book a room.
Obtain Serenity Via A Stroll
![california travel in november Stockton Creek Reserve in Yosemite Mariposa County](https://cahighsierra.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Stockton-Creek_Mariposa.jpg)
If there’s one thing anyone regardless of age will appreciate, it’s a pleasant hike in nature. Of course, you can attempt to tackle a big climb, but we suggest slowing down and enjoying the season. Take in the last bit of fall colors , or better yet, explore one of the lesser known trails in the foothills of the Sierra like Stockton Creek Preserve . Just minutes outside of the historic town of Mariposa, you’ll find a birding paradise within an oak forest.
Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth
![california travel in november Tuolumne County Alicias Sugar Shack](https://cahighsierra.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/AliciasSugarShack_P5180013_CAHS.jpg)
Let’s be honest… fall is hands-down the best season for baked goods. Ingredients like aromatic pumpkin spice, rich caramel, and zesty cinnamon just make your mouth water. This is the time to splurge and enjoy a decadent dessert. Make a pitstop at Alicia’s Sugar Shack on your way to explore Sonora Pass. Serving up tasty pastries such as scones, danishes, cookies, and even gluten-free options, you’ll be swooning in heaven. For the foodie, we suggest a visit to Visalia . Located in the center of the fruit basket of America, you’ll find a plethora of places to enjoy like the Component Coffee Lab . You can taste the passion in their offerings. From their ethically sourced coffee beans to their mouthwatering breakfast dishes such as their O.G. Avocado Toast, you’ll be giddy from the flavor profiles.
Hit The Links
![california travel in november rolling landscape with the lusciously green links of the Saddle Creek Resort in front](https://cahighsierra.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Saddle-Creek-Resort-hole11.jpeg)
As people’s focus drifts to the High Sierra and skiing, take advantage of the lesser crowds and go golfing instead in the Gold Country . The temperatures on average are in the mid-60s, and greens fees are lower than they would be in summer. Take a swing at the Golf Club at Copper Valley . Consistently ranked as one of California’s top courses and Golfweek Magazine’s #23 on the list of Best Courses You Can Play in California. Or enjoy the award-winning Robert Trent Jones Jr redesigned Greenhorn Creek Golf Course . Pair it with wine tasting , great food , and the historic towns in Calaveras county and you may never want to come back.
Although “ Fun-tober ” was a blast, as you can see, November is nothing to sneeze at when it comes to things to see and do.

10 Amazing Fall Destinations in California for Families
By: Author Leslie Harvey
Posted on Published: September 22, 2023
Share this!:
Tourists traditionally flock to California in summer, but fall in the Golden State is one of the best times of year to visit. My home state may not quite have the breathtaking fall foliage of New England, but California has fall fun all its own to offer. All the inland locations that are too hot to visit during the summer months finally cool down, while the coastal areas remain moderately warm. In addition, autumn is a great time to beat the crowds, especially at some increasingly popular destinations like many national parks in California .
![california travel in november Top family-friendly destinations in California in the fall. Find out where to find autumn colors in the Golden State, the best national park adventures in the shoulder season, top wine destinations, and many more. #california #visitcalifornia #falltravel #familytravel](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Top-Destinations-in-California-in-Fall.jpg)
Our family regularly takes shorter fall trips around our home state of California. It’s harder with the kids and their school schedules, but we will take our kids out of school for travel on occasion . Otherwise, we look for three day weekends like Labor Day, Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day, and Veteran’s Day that are usual holidays. Some school districts in many Western States may also have a fall break.
So if you are ready to visit California in September, October, or November (or just take a little weekend trip if you are a local), where should you go? Here are 10 top fall destinations in California for family travelers to get your travel planning started.

Top Places to Visit in California in the Fall
1. death valley.
![california travel in november Top Fall Destinations in California - Death Valley](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Top-Fall-Destinations-in-California-Death-Valley.jpg)
Editor’s Note for 2023 : Unfortunately, all of the national park is closed in 2023 as of the date of publication of this post due to Hurricane Hilary damage and flooding. The park is targeting October 15, 2023 to reopen the west side of the park through Lone Pine. Check the Death Valley National Park website for the most up-to-date alerts and conditions.
Well-known for its blazing summer heat, Death Valley finally gets cool enough in October and November to be more enjoyable for visitors in its lower elevations. Those months usually mark the opening of the ranger talks and walks and many more facilities through the park.

Make sure to plan well if your visit will coincide with the annual 49ers encampment in November (no, not the football team). During this celebration of pioneer history, history buffs flood the parks with special activities and events. It can make for an even more interesting trip, but you just need to plan for the crowds.
2. Grass Valley & Nevada City
![california travel in november Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum Railbus ride](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Nevada-County-Narrow-Gauge-Railroad-Museum-Railbus-ride.jpg)
There aren’t a lot of places to find fall colors in California, but one place to see them is in gold rush country in Nevada County. West Coasters longing for some of the beauty of East Coast autumn can find it in the county’s two main towns, Grass Valley and Nevada City. Located not far off Interstate 80 between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe , it’s an easy weekend getaway for most Northern Californians.
Kids will especially love all the gold rush era attractions in the area. Empire Mine State Park and the Northstar Mine Museum are highlights. In addition, railroad-loving kiddos should not miss the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum or a chance to take a Railbus trip there. My son has ridden most of the trains of Northern California by now and this museum was a surprise hit for us on a recent visit!
3. Lassen Volcanic National Park
![california travel in november Lassen Volcanic National Park Bumpass Hell](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Lassen-Volcanic-National-Park-Bumpass-Hell.jpg)
Editor’s Note for 2023 : Lassen still has some closures as a result of damage caused by the 2021 Dixie Fire. Additionally, construction – with road closures – will begin September 25, 2023 due to a recent collapse at the Sulphur Works area. Check the Lassen Volcanic National Park website for the most up-to-date alerts and conditions.
Lassen Volcanic National Park near Redding may be one of the nation’s least visited national parks, but don’t let that dissuade you from a trip. It is not often visited in large part because its season is so short due to weather. In some years when there is record snowfall, the main road through the park may not fully open until late July (in all fairness, it is usually is open by June most years). And it will probably be snowed in again by mid to late October. It probably goes without saying that your window to see Lassen is short.
But its short season and more remote location means it is largely unspoiled. Minimal crowds and hikes through thermal features make it a great choice for families. It’s the most southern of the peaks in the Cascades Range which can be the starting point for an amazing volcano focused road trip.

4. Avenue of the Giants
![california travel in november Top Fall Destinations in California - Toddler in Redwoods](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/Potty-Training-Packing-List-Toddler-in-Redwoods.jpg)
Northern California is full of glorious redwood trees, but few can match the majesty of the trees found along the Avenue of the Giants. This stretch of road runs parallel to Highway 101 about an hour south of Eureka in Northern California in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Stop along the road for photos or plan a hike. There is an easy half-mile nature trail at Founder’s Grove that anyone in the family can do.
Definitely don’t miss the trees so big you can drive right through them – literally! The Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree is south of the Avenue of the Giants in Leggett. And the Shrine Drive-Thru Tree is in Myers Flat within the boundaries of the Avenue of the Giants. My kids had a blast experiencing both.
![california travel in november Chandelier Drive Thru Tree Leggett CA](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Chandelier-Drive-Thru-Tree-Leggett-CA.jpg)
Quirky roadside attractions litter the landscape and make for additional fun family road trip stops in the area. Plan stops at both Confusion Hill in Leggett and One Log House in Garberville.
5. Yosemite National Park
![california travel in november Yosemite National Park 2020 - Valley View](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Yosemite-National-Park-2020-Valley-View.jpg)
Everyone and their brother visits Yosemite in summer. That is why you should be smart and wait for fall to arrive! Visitors in autumn can expect a bit of a respite from the extreme overcrowding the park has been experiencing in summer in recent years. Room opens up at some of the iconic places to stay like the Ahwahnee Hotel and Tenaya Lodge . Yosemite rewards during this time of year with a few fall colors too.

Make hiking a part of your fall vacation. Families with younger kids will enjoy easier hikes like Mirror Lake, Glacier Point, Tuolumne Meadows. The first part of the Mist Trail to the Vernal Falls footbridge is also very manageable for many younger kids who don’t mind a few hills. Just watch the weather later in the fall season as snow can cause road closures. And always carry chains!
6. Napa Valley
![california travel in november Welcome to Napa Valley California sign](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Napa-with-Kids-Napa-Sign.jpg)
All of Northern California wine country is glorious in the fall months, but family travelers should head to the Napa Valley region – particularly in and around the towns of St. Helena and Calistoga . There is plenty of wine for parents to samples with lots of kid-friendly activities mixed in. The fall weather is usually exceedingly pleasant and crisp and the fall brings lower crowds than the busy summer months.

Family travelers should pay a stop to Sterling Vineyards, which features a gondola from the valley up to the hillside winery (that is finally almost repaired and reopening October 2023 after fire damage!). Castello di Amorosa, a modern-day replica of a Tuscan castle that is also a winery, is another family-friendly choice.
Want to skip the wine? Old Faithful Geyser, the Petrified Forest, and the Sharpsteen Museum are also popular choices for family travelers. And don’t forget about the jeep tours through Safari West, a wildlife reserve with zebras, giraffes, and more. It’s only 15-20 minutes down the road.
7. Santa Ynez Valley & Solvang
![california travel in november Solvang Brewing Company - Solvang Windmills](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Solvang-Brewing-Company.jpg)
Speaking of wine, one of Southern California’s most famous wine regions is also ideal for families in the fall. The Danish town of Solvang is always a hit with families any time of year and is also home to one of California’s missions, Mission Santa Ines, for an educational stop. And in the fall, festivals usually abound, including Danish Days and a Scarecrow Fest to name a few.
The outdoor adventures in the Valley are ideal for active families and the weather is nice enough to really enjoy them in fall. Rent bikes and go on a long ride. Book some time at one of the area’s several dude ranches ( Alisal Guest Ranch is the most well-known). Plan a few hikes. The area also isn’t far from Santa Barbara, so you can also squeeze in a little time on the coast or hit the beach on warmer days.
8. Pinnacles National Park
![california travel in november San Francisco Day Trips - Pinnacles National Park](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/San-Francisco-Day-Trips-Pinnacles-National-Park.jpg)
Haven’t heard of this national park? You are not alone. As one of the country’s newest national parks (designated in 2013), it is not on many travel radars. Since it can be subject to very hot summer weather, the fall shoulder seasons can be one of the best times to visit.
What to do when you get to Pinnacles? It’s all about the outdoors. Look out for the California condor and marvel at the park’s volcanic spires formed by movement from the San Andreas fault. Families will enjoy the moderate hikes and the chance to explore caves within the park’s boundaries.
Since the park is fairly new, don’t expect many services like you would find at larger national parks. Bring enough food and water as well as emergency supplies and expect to rough it a bit. Finally, be aware that the west and east entrances of the park do not interconnect. You will need to drive your car around the park to experience both sides (but the eastern side is where most of the action is, so do that side if you only have time for one).
9. San Francisco
![california travel in november San Francisco with Kids](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/San-Francisco-with-Kids.jpg)
Let me let you in on a local’s secret: the very best time to visit my hometown of San Francisco is in the fall. The legions of summer tourists are long gone, and the San Francisco weather is at its absolute best. September and early October are often the warmest months, with much less fog than the rest of the year to catch the sights of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and more.
Plus, there are so many things to do in San Francisco in the fall . A highlight is the city’s annual hosting of Fleet Week (usually on Indigenous Peoples Day/Columbus Day Weekend) when the Navy’s Blue Angels rocket under the Golden Gate Bridge in a stunning air show. Check out my 1 day itinerary for visiting San Francisco if you are coming for a shorter visit and be sure not to miss these recommendations for the best things to do in San Francisco with kids .
![california travel in november Top Fall Destinations in California - Julian Apple](https://tripswithtykes.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Top-Fall-Destinations-in-California-Julian-Apple.jpg)
Last but certainly not least is a little town that many Californians probably don’t know about. Julian, an inland destination about an hour from San Diego, is excellent in the fall because of its many apple orchards, affording lots of family fun picking them. The apple picking season runs from mid-August through September so just don’t go too late.
The town also had its very own Gold Rush about two decades after the northern part of the state went mad for gold. Naturally, there are other activities to do on a fall getaway that celebrate that history. Take a gold mining and panning tour with the Eagle Mining Company, ride in a horse-drawn carriage, or simply plan a few hikes to enjoy the great outdoors.
Additional Tips for Travel in California in the Fall
1. watch wildfire news closely.
Sadly, wildfires in California have increasingly been an issue in recent years. They can last well into fall affecting travel to some destinations in this post. Always keep on top of the latest fire news if you travel in California in the fall. Thankfully in 2023, the record-breaking winter made for wetter summer conditions than ever, but some fires are still happening this year.
2. Watch the Snow Report
With September and October being some of the hottest months in a lot of California destinations, you might not think about snow when making travel plans. But it can hit some California mountain destinations unexpectedly as early as the beginning of October. It usually melts quickly and doesn’t start accumulating much until well into November for the season. If your travels coincide with a day that it is coming down, however, you need to prepare accordingly. See my tips for traveling to Lake Tahoe in winter for all the winter weather California driving rules and tips.

I love this list! Fall is my favorite time to travel in California because the weather is usually perfect and the leaves can be so pretty. I love Calistoga for a family wine country getaway too! Tahoe is also very nice in the fall--the yellow of the aspen trees contrasting with all the green and blue is gorgeous.

San Francisco is a city with lots to offer throughout the year © Klaus Vedfelt / Getty Images
San Francisco’s mild weather makes it a consistent year-round attraction, which is a bonus for visitors looking for flexible travel dates.
Our peninsula-shaped city is often covered with a comforting blanket of fog (known affectionately as Karl ), formed by the hot sun evaporating ocean waters that then collide with cold air created from a coastal cold-water current. This is then sucked in through the Golden Gate and pushed by Easterly winds.
First-time summer visitors often end up shivering in shorts and hastily wrapping up in SF sweatshirts acquired at the nearest gift shop. Just in case you were in doubt – summer is not the warmest time to visit. There are vibrant summertime events that still make a visit worthwhile, but sun lovers should wait until late summer or early fall to visit SF for perfectly warm (but not too hot!) sunny days.
That said, there are still distinctive seasons to experience throughout the year, resulting from a combination of nature and our lovely, quirky, diverse SF cultures. Spring blooms, seasonal farmers markets, both wholesome and raunchy street festivals, and migrating whales are just some of what various months have to offer. Here’s how to judge the perfect time for you to visit San Francisco.
March through October is best for building a beach campfire
When you want to balance bar-hopping nightlife and shopping with a little nature downtime, or if you need a family-friendly activity, consider the fact that March through October is Burn Season at Ocean Beach on the westernmost edge of the city.
The 16 fire rings are open from 6am to 9:30pm daily on a first-come-first-served basis, but first, check online for no-burn days due to occurrences like wildfires or Spare the Air days. If the rings are full, ask to share and offer to contribute firewood or snacks. Burn season also includes the summer solstice in June – the longest day when the sun sets after 9pm, giving you time to enjoy a leisurely, brilliantly orange sunset well into the evening.
Wear layers to withstand the wind and BYO firewood, which is available nearby at Safeway on La Playa and Fulton streets, or the 7-Eleven on 46th Ave and Judah St. There are parking spots and bathrooms nearby. For public transport options, take Muni buses 5R or 18, or Muni metro line N Judah.
![california travel in november The farmers' market outside the Ferry Building in San Francisco](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2023-06/GettyImages-513406357.jpeg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
March to November is best for farmers markets
California grows much of the country’s produce, and San Francisco’s farmers' markets get the freshest, most peak-season goods since we’re so close to growing regions such as Salinas (“America’s Salad bowl”), Gilroy, San Joaquin Valley and many more.
A handful of farmers markets here only operate roughly March through November, but we’re lucky that the majority of the city’s 20-plus farmers markets open year-round. Still, nothing beats the abundance of produce available during the non-winter months. Get juicy, ruby-red strawberries and cherries during the summer (if you can get in line early enough – competition can be fierce), and tart, citrusy nopales (cactus pads) through fall.
Some favorite farmers markets include Civic Center’s vital Heart of the City Farmers Market, the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market (go on Saturdays, which are Saturdays), the sprawling Outer Sunset Farmers Market and Mercantile and a new farmers market in the Bayview created by Dragonspunk.
February to May is best for whale-watching
Majestic gray whales, orcas and humpbacks all pass by our state’s coastline during their respective migration seasons. While it’s possible to spot at least one species’ migration year-round, the overlap months for all three species usually runs from February to May.
Since a 1985 international moratorium on whaling, the population has made a healthy comeback. Climate change’s recent warmer ocean temperatures have also driven the increased number of whales closer to SF and, at times, actually into the Bay itself. During peak whale season, you don’t even need binoculars (though, of course, they’re helpful). Some whales get close to shore – and in clusters – so it’s easy to spot them by their blowhole activity, then watch their flippers and long bodies breach and lobtail.
If you want to stay in SF proper, sign up for whale boat tours with San Francisco Whale Tours or Oceanic Society . Or plant yourself at Lands End Lookout . Otherwise, there are tons of whale-watching spots up and down the coast. For places relatively close to the city, consider Point Bonita Lighthouse north in Marin, or go a bit south of SF to Mussel Rock on the Daly City-Pacifica border.
![california travel in november People take part in a parade wearing pants and shoes with colorful balloons attached to them](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2021-02/shutterstockRF_668407513.jpg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
April through October is best for festivals
Our April and October might look and feel similar weather-wise, but the city creates distinctive seasons through the vibrant street festivals offered spring through fall. Whether cold and foggy or sunny and clear, the vibes are always celebratory.
Two highlights of the festival season begin a little early with indie music-filled Noise Pop Festival and SF's famous Chinese New Year Parade in February. Then spring brings the 50-year-old Nihonmachi Street Fair (aka Cherry Blossom Festival) in April in Japantown, which is only one of three Japantowns in the nation. The side block parties along the 12K Bay to Breakers route in May definitely count as their own festival, and film fans can enjoy CAAMFest during AAPI Heritage Month .
June brings the very SF celebration of LGBTIQ+ Pride Month and its highly anticipated parade. The free Stern Grove Festival concert series has a lovely long runtime on Sundays from June through August, and the historic Fillmore Jazz Festival takes place in July. Major musical headliners pack Outside Lands in August, in addition to having become a huge food and beverage event on its own. BDSM-themed Folsom Street Fair basks in September’s late summer weather.
The free Hardly Strictly Blue Grass rocks Golden Gate Park in late September and early October. SOMA Pilipinas’ UNDSCVRD night market takes over the district a few times a year, including in October.
May is best for mind-blowing super blooms
Even though Karl the Fog helps make the city’s year-round mild weather a draw, there’s still an awakening in the air once the rainy season is over and wildflowers and people alike start to peep their heads out. It’s no joke that April showers bring May flowers.
If the rainy season was particularly heavy, outdoor lovers will be treated to wildflower super blooms seemingly everywhere, from unexpected clusters of richly orange California poppies on freeway medians to what news outlets named the best super bloom of 2023 at Mori Point in Pacifica, just south of SF. The hillsides were flooded with thick carpets of buttery yellow goldfields and white-ended tidy tips. While blooms may peak in late April or early May, plenty of destination-worthy blooms can often remain in the city, and around it, well into June.
![california travel in november People drink beer and wine in a brewery, with an out-of-focus bar and stainless steel beer manufacturing equipment in the background.](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2023-06/GettyImages-1300610742.jpg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
Burning Man (usually late August to early September) is the best time to snag a dinner reservation
There is still plenty of counterculture and a deeply creative community in San Francisco. That’s why seemingly half the city clears out during the annual Burning Man festival in Black Rock City, Nevada , during the week leading up to and including Labor Day (the festival’s headquarters are in SF). The rest of San Francisco relishes this time, when going out on a Saturday night is a breeze in certain parts of the city.
SF has been a bit quieter in its post-pandemic state, but restaurant reservations have been ticking up, and it’s still worth checking out places you would usually never consider around this time. You can find parking almost anywhere and snag a normal-time dinner reservation for places that usually seem impossible, like the new California State Bird Provisions , modern Italian American Flour + Water , or Michelin-starred contemporary Korean San Ho Won . Waltz into the belly of the Mission District’s bar scene around 16th and Valencia, or other bar-heavy areas like Hayes Valley.
Late August through mid-October is San Francisco’s true (late) summer
It’s very on-brand that our summer months are actually extra foggy, and August in particular is referred to as “Fogust.” The culmination of hotter summer weather surrounding SF creates intense marine layers that, in turn, create more fog. For fog aficionados, hang out in the southwestern neighborhoods , like the Outer Sunset, to experience the thick of it.
As ocean temperatures get warmer in September, less fog forms, plus hot inland air gets blown toward the coast. Make way for the late summer season, which usually lasts until mid-October. The warm weather and subsequent relaxing vibes are perfect for outdoor activities, whether hiking, a street festival, or just sitting in a park. Visiting SF during our late summer also works out budget-wise, as traveling during fall tends to be cheaper.
![california travel in november A woman on a crosswalk during winter in San Francisco, California](https://lp-cms-production.imgix.net/2023-06/GettyImages-1138882521.jpeg?auto=format&q=75&w=1920)
December is best for stunning light displays
SF’s winter weather is mild (unsurprisingly), albeit slightly cooler and perhaps a bit rainy compared to the rest of the year. Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas, the holiday light displays around the city are still a cheerful foil to the early winter darkness. Typical tourist destinations one might normally avoid really deliver with the holiday lights, like Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 . Next to their extravagant lights and decorations are also winter outdoor ice rinks that pop up on The Embarcadero and in Union Square .
City Hall employs 220 LED lighting fixtures that bathe the majestic exterior in red and green during Christmas, plus other year-round light combinations like a rainbow for Pride month in June and blue and gold for Golden State Warriors’ victories. Fancy hotels like the Ritz-Carlton have annual holiday light and decoration extravaganzas, and the Fairmont creates a life-sized gingerbread house . Cruise through some of the city’s ritzier neighborhoods like Pacific Heights for huge, glittering displays.
A bonus to visiting the city during the holidays is SPCA’s annual window displays of puppies and kittens available for adoption at Macy’s Union Square — not a physical light display, but something that will certainly light up your heart.

The holiday season kicks off in late November, and the long Thanksgiving weekend is a popular time for a getaway. Some travelers will seek sunny destinations like Jamaica, Los Cabos, or Florida, while others embrace the holiday spirit with a trip to festive spots like New York City. Lively festivals, lush beach resorts, and national parks draw travelers to places near and far, so whether you’re looking for a quick weekend getaway or a longer trip abroad, we’ve got you covered. Here are the best places to travel in November in the United States and around the world.
North Queensland, Australia
Vicki Smith/Getty Images
It’s spring in the Southern Hemisphere, and November borders the sunny dry season and the more humid season, with temperatures around 80 degrees. Snorkeling and diving in the Great Barrier Reef is a once-in-a-lifetime thrill, and visitors can get there from Cairns in an hour or two. (Some choose to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef on land with a road trip starting in Cairns.) Another Queensland attraction, the Kuranda Train and Skyrail takes guests on a 90-minute ride through tropical rainforest, past waterfalls, and into the Barron Gorge for a scenic, exciting rail journey. The spectacle of coral spawning — a burst of color and a vibrant sign of life in the Great Barrier Reef — takes place in November around the full moon. Stay nearby at Shangri-La The Marina, Cairns for a convenient base for exploring the area.
New York City, New York
Don Eim/Travel + Leisure
Whether you visit for shopping, Broadway shows, museums, or restaurants, New York City never disappoints. November begins the holiday season, always a festive time in the Big Apple. There’s a chill in the air as New York’s famous window displays and holiday markets attract crowds, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (Nov. 23) and the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting (Nov. 29) celebrate the season. Hotels throughout the five boroughs offer a range of places to stay; Manhattan properties including Pendry Manhattan West , Ritz-Carlton New York NoMad, and The Wall Street Hotel were ranked among the best hotels in New York City .

Temperatures in the mid-80s, attractive room rates, and the end of hurricane season make November a good time to head to Jamaica. The third-largest Caribbean island, Jamaica has three airports and four main cruise ports as well as six resort areas: Kingston, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Negril, Port Antonio, and South Coast. Stunning beaches , great music, delicious food, and local culture are among the many reasons to visit the island country. Many travelers opt to stay at an all-inclusive resort for a worry-free vacation, but there is a variety of accommodations to explore. If you don’t want to stay at an all-inclusive property, Half Moon and Tryall Club in Montego Bay and Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios are worth checking out. The annual Jamaica Invitational Pro-am golf event will be held Nov. 15-19 in Montego Bay.
Phoenix, Arizona
Nik Pennington/Travel + Leisure
Both Scottsdale and Phoenix are home to gorgeous hotels , starry skies, stunning scenery, and perfect November weather for being outdoors, so you can hit the golf course, lounge by the pool, or hike a scenic path during your autumn trip. In Scottsdale , Canal Convergence (Nov. 3-12) is an exciting light, water, and art event along the waterfront with live music, food, and more. Golf is a major attraction in the Phoenix area, with courses at the renowned Arizona Biltmore , The Wigwam , JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort, and many more. Just outside the Phoenix metro area, Castle Hot Springs , a luxury wellness retreat, features mineral hot springs, a spa, guided hikes, yoga, an onsite farm, and a Via Ferrata adventure course.
Los Cabos, Mexico
Mariah Tyler/Travel + Leisure
In Los Cabos, the month begins with the celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Nov. 1-2) featuring colorful parades, altars, and events to honor loved ones who have passed away. Later in the month, the annual Los Cabos International Film Festival is set for Nov. 29-Dec. 3. No matter when you visit, sunning on gorgeous beaches, playing golf, fishing, and surfing are just a few of the top things to do. Visitors can choose from an array of hotels, including all-inclusive resorts like the luxurious Grand Velas Los Cabos . Or, you can be among the first to stay at the new Grand Velas Boutique Los Cabos , an all-inclusive, adults-only luxury hotel opening in time for Thanksgiving. The five-star Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal will welcome Michelin-starred Chef Enrique Casarrubias from Nov. 9-12.
The Florida Keys, Florida
The 125-mile island chain at the southern tip of Florida is celebrating its bicentennial this year. Sunny weather, clear-blue waters, and lots of things to do draw visitors to the islands throughout the year. Visitors can go diving and snorkeling in the coral barrier reef or at Key Largo’s John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , the first undersea park in the U.S. There’s plenty to do on dry land as well, and film fans may want to arrive for the Key West Film Festival (Nov. 15-19). Lodging ranges from guest houses to posh resorts, including all-inclusive and adults-only Bungalows Key Largo and the expansive Islamorada Resort Collection, with multiple resorts to choose from. On Key West, options include the Casa Marina Key West, Curio Collection by Hilton , The Marker Key West Harbor Resort, or Cuban-inspired Havana Cabana . Visitors can fly directly to Key West or drive from South Florida along the picturesque Overseas Highway .
Tel Aviv, Israel

Pleasant weather in the 70s and lots to do in this city on the Mediterranean Sea make November an ideal time to visit Tel Aviv. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and great food, Tel Aviv is less than an hour away from Jerusalem, convenient for travelers who plan to also experience the ancient holy city. The Carmel and Levinsky markets, Mediterranean beaches, and lively nightlife are among the top things to do in Tel Aviv. Lovely places to stay include The Norman, R48 Hotel & Garden, The David Kempinski, and The Vera. Set to open in October, The George combines a members’ club, hotel, and co-working space and offers culinary and wellness experiences.
Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas is a year-round destination with shows, casinos, amusement park rides, museums, shopping, and attractions for the whole family . Must-see spots include the Fountains of Bellagio, the High Roller observation wheel, the Fremont Street Experience, and the Venetian Resort’s gondolas. With over 150,000 hotel rooms spread across the Las Vegas area, there are plenty of fantastic hotels to choose from. Favorites include Caesars Palace, The Wynn , Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas, Bellagio , MGM Grand , and Resorts World . Yosemite National Park, California
Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure
A major advantage of a November visit to Yosemite is that summer crowds are gone, and you can enjoy the scenery and serenity of the park during crisp autumn days. The Ahwahnee Hotel is open year round with renovations set to be completed in October; the historic property is wonderful to see even if you don’t spend the night. Tenaya at Yosemite, set deep in the sequoia forest, is also open in November with a variety of accommodations including suites, cabins, and cottages. From Nov. 4-6, Château du Sureau , a Relais & Châteaux resort, will partner with The Ansel Adams Gallery for Yosemite Photography Weekend . The charming resort features 10 guest rooms, a two-bedroom villa, and The Elderberry House restaurant.
New Orleans, Louisiana
Violet Smirnova/Travel + Leisure
Mild autumn weather with a chance of rain makes November a pleasant time in New Orleans. Along with beignets, po’boys, and gumbo, there are lots of reasons to visit. The city’s Caribbean heritage is celebrated with dance, music, and cuisine at the Bayou Bacchanal (Nov. 3-4). The New Orleans Film Festival is set for Nov. 2-7 with parties, events, and panels in venues across the city. Get to know chefs, mixologists, and bartenders in NOLA during Cocktail Week from Nov. 6-12. The acclaimed National WWII Museum will open a new wing called the Liberation Pavilion , exploring the end of the war, the Holocaust, and the postwar years, with a grand opening on Nov. 3. Stay at one of the city’s many hotels, including the Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans, Kimpton Hotel Fontenot , or Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans.

About the National Park by month Series
To put together this list, we’ve combined our personal experiences and tips we gathered from locals and cross-referenced them with the weather, accessibility, local forums, seasonal attractions like fall foliage or wildflowers, and special events happening in the area. We also took into account any unique adventures only offered at certain times of the year to find the most optimal months to visit each National Park. Phew! that was a lot!
It took me a whole week of research, but since I’m a maximizer, it was completely worth having a year-round calendar of adventures (publishing that soon!). Also, check out our complete list of all the national parks and all national park units that include soon-to-be national parks.
We also chose not to include the hardest-to-access national parks in Alaska and U.S. territories in this series.

Is November a Good Time to Visit National Parks?
Yes! It’s the best month for many national parks that are typically too hot to visit during the summer.
Plan on visiting more than two national parks this year? Pick up an America the Beautiful annual pass to save money (entrance fees to each park are, on average, $30-35 per vehicle). Plus, you are helping support the Parks that always need funding.

Tips for Visiting the Best National Parks in November
- Explore the parks responsibly using Leave no Trace principles . Have a plan, stay on established trails, carry out anything you carry in, leave what you find, minimize campfire impact, respect wildlife, and be considerate of others.
- Pick up the National Park Annual Pass if you plan on visiting multiple parks within the year. It saves you a lot of money.
- Want to see the fall foliage? Climate change and droughts this year will make timing more unpredictable. We typically go onto the geotag on Instagram or Tiktok and scroll through all the recent posts to see what it’s looking like. Keep in mind that people post older content, so I like to look at the grid or ones that non-influencers are posting. You can also leave a comment and ask when they went.
- It’s always a good idea to pack layers wherever you go. Some parks are warm during the day and cool at night. Pay attention to the elevation change too! Some parks will be warm on the valley floor and cold at higher elevations.
- You may need a reservation. See national parks that now require reservations here .
- Always check the park’s site and Visitors Center for the most up-to-date information on closures.
- Remember that wildlife is wild. Be familiar with how to interact with animals and how much space you should have between you and them.
How you will pack depends on which park you visit and the activities you plan, but here is a general guide on items we always try to pack.
- Camera Gear
- Travel Backpack
- Camping / Backpacking Equipment
- National Park Annual Pass
- National Park Passport
- Layers ( The Best Travel Jackets )
- Solid Hiking Shoes

Best Times To Visit Las Vegas
The best time to visit Las Vegas is from March to May and from September to November. While you'll find plenty of travel deals throughout the year, the spring and fall shoulder seasons offer the most moderate weather. Sin City welcomes an influx of visitors during the winter months, especially surrounding New Year's Eve, the Super Bowl and Valentine's Day, and the sweltering summers see daytime temperatures exceeding 100 degrees. No matter when you decide to visit Vegas, try to plan a midweek trip – because this is a common weekend getaway destination, you'll find more rooms at lower rates between Tuesday and Thursday.
Las Vegas is also home to hundreds of conventions each year, which can drive up room rates. Before setting travel dates, check the city's tourism board convention schedule to find out which hotels are hosting what and when – this will help you secure a better deal at your choice hotel.
