The Ohio mom who left her 16-month-old daughter to starve to death in a soiled playpen while she went on a 10-day vacation has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Kristel Candelario, 32, committed “the ultimate betrayal” by abandoning daughter Jailyn without food or water last summer so she could jet off to Detroit and Puerto Rico, a judge told her Monday.

“Just as you didn’t let Jailyn out of her confinement, so too you should spend the rest of your life in a cell without freedom,” County Common Pleas Court Judge Brendan Sheehan told the mom.

Kristel Candelario, 32, will spend the rest of her life in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated murder in the starvation death of her 16-month-old daughter.

“The only difference will be, the prison will at least feed you and give you liquid that you denied her.”

When given a chance to speak, Candelario, who claimed to have struggled with depression and other mental health issues, said she has prayed daily for forgiveness.

“There’s so much pain that I have in regards to the loss of my baby, Jailyn,” she said in court.

“I’m extremely hurt about everything that happened. I am not trying to justify my actions, but nobody knew how much I was suffering and what I was going through,” she said.

“God and my daughter have forgiven me,” she claimed.

Candelario pleaded guilty last month to aggravated murder and child endangerment as part of a plea deal dropping two additional murder counts and a felonious assault charge in a case that Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley described as “truly unimaginable.”

Candelario’s parents spoke in their daughter’s defense at her sentencing.

“My heart is ripped apart in 1,000 pieces,” the woman’s mother said. “I am here to tell the world that my daughter came from a home where there were values, beliefs, emotions, warmth. Where the most important thing was family.”

She added that Candelario’s “emotional health was affected on more than one occasion” and that her “depression and anxiety ended up consuming her.”

Candelario’s father said that even though he is “shocked by everything that happened,” he is still giving “moral and spiritual support” to his “beloved daughter.”

“I ask for compassion, understanding and mercy,” he said.

Candelario left her toddler in their Cleveland home in June 2023 without any supervision so she could travel solo.

A photo taken three days into her tropical getaway showed the mom smiling on a sandy Puerto Rican beach, even as her daughter was dying at home.

“The time that is enjoyed is the true time lived,” Candelario breezily wrote in a caption accompanying the snap she shared on Facebook.

When Candelario returned 10 days later, she found Jailyn not breathing and called 911.

When Candelario returned 10 days later, she found Jailyn not breathing and called 911.

The child was pronounced dead by paramedics on the spot.

The tot’s Pack-N-Play pen where she spent the final agonizing days of her short life “consisted of soiled blankets and a bottom liner, saturated with urine and feces,” an affidavit stated.

An autopsy found that Jailyn had died of starvation and severe dehydration.

In announcing her guilty plea in February, O’Malley slammed Candelario’s “selfish decisions” and said the case “will stick with me for many years to come.”

Mother sentenced to life for her toddler's death blames mental health for leaving child alone to go on vacation

Kristel Candelario, who was sentenced to life in prison for the death of her toddler — whom she left alone for more than a week while she went on vacation — blamed her mental problems for the decision to abandon her daughter.

Candelario spoke with Noticias Telemundo on Wednesday from prison in Cleveland, Ohio, where she’s serving her sentence for the death of her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn.

Candelario’s attorneys said they’re aiming for the court to take her mental state into account in a future appeal of her case.

When asked how it’s possible for a mother to abandon a 16-month-old baby in a house, unattended, for 10 days to go on vacation, Candelario said, “The answer is a bit difficult for the rest of the world to understand and in particular for the people who question and point out that I have committed a diabolical act, as was mentioned in court.”

Jailyn Calendario.

“I gave my testimony. I took the blame for my actions. I was experiencing emotional stress,” she said, adding she had been experiencing relationship issues with the girl’s father.

However, Candelario insisted that “my daughters have always been everything, my whole world to me,” and assured that Jailyn “is always in my heart and is with me wherever I go.”

Asked about the reasons for her trip to Detroit and Puerto Rico that resulted in her leaving her daughter alone, Candelario said, “It was a decision that was actually made many months before,” when she was leaving a two-month hospitalization for mental health issues.

“I was in the hospital in January and February 2023 because I had emotional and mental problems. [On] one of those two occasions, I wanted to make an attempt on my own life. For that reason, I was in the hospital without being able to walk for exactly almost two weeks. And in the month of March, I mean, my [now] ex-boyfriend and I wanted to take a vacation."

During the interview, Candelario attempted to free her ex-partner of any blame, saying she had told him she was going to leave the girl with her mother for the trip.

She also denied that she had purchased the tickets to travel having made the decision to leave her daughter unattended, but rather that the event occurred as a result of her mental state.

“Actually I left for the trip as a result of an impulse that I had, that I took, grabbed my four things and ran out of the house like when someone is being chased,” she said.

“It’s not that at that moment I thought that, ‘Ah, I was going to Puerto Rico ... I was going to be super comfortable.’ No, I never thought that. I simply wanted to get away from a life of stress, depression and anxiety,” Candelario said. “I didn’t want to continue living, because I had had a lot of problems in my life.”

During the trip, Candelario said, she thought about her daughter and the fact that she was alone: “The people who accompanied me [on the trip] could see that I was very distracted, I was very angry. They told me, ‘Kristel, what’s happening? You’re not yourself.’ I never mentioned anything [about my daughter].”

Candelario said her boyfriend asked her about Jailyn one day during the trip. “When he mentioned [the girl] to me, it was like when someone reminds you of someone who’s not with you at that moment,” but she said that she simply responded that her daughter was fine.

She confessed that for a few seconds she thought about calling a family member or neighbor to check on her daughter’s well-being, but “I didn’t do it. No, I never did it. And it was my mistake.”

Candelario said her parents never knew that she had  gone on a trip  and had abandoned the little girl to her fate.

“They never knew that I had gone to Puerto Rico,” she said. “They thought that I was at home or that I was with Jailyn, maybe somewhere else, in another city.”

Candelario’s parents had been traveling with her other daughter, who was 7 years old at the time: “The only thing I told them [was], ‘Go at ease, I’m going to stay here with Jailyn.” She told them she wasn’t up to doing anything during the vacation time. “That was all I told them,” she said.

Upon her return, Candelario found her daughter unresponsive and called the police.

Then, she said, “that’s when my world fell apart. Not because maybe I was thinking about going to prison. That’s the least important thing, because one is an adult and one can accept one’s mistakes. [I was in] despair. I felt she could be saved, things didn’t have to happen that way because my daughter was doing well, I always took care of her.”

Candelario’s attorney, Derek Smith, told the court that no one was trying to excuse Candelario’s behavior but that she had tried to harm herself in 2023 and was placed on antidepressants, which she stopped taking without tapering down dosage as required, which can cause side effects; he said Candelario was “not thinking clearly.”

Authorities declared Jailyn dead after finding her in a playpen surrounded by feces and urine, wrapped in dirty blankets and “extremely dehydrated,” according to the sheriff’s office. The child had lost a third of her weight during her mother’s absence.

When sentencing her, Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Judge Brendan Sheehan summarized the tragedy and Candelario’s behavior as a mother with one sentence, telling her she committed the “ultimate act of betrayal” by leaving her baby terrified and alone.

Mother Who Left Toddler Home Alone for 10 Days to Go on Vacation Sentenced to Life Over Her Murder

Kirstel Candelario, 32, was sentenced Monday for the aggravated murder of her 16-month-old daughter Jailyn in June 2023

An Ohio mom has been sentenced to life over the death of her toddler after she left her home alone for 10 days last summer.

Kristel Candelario, 32, received a life sentence without parole on Monday for the aggravated murder of her 16-month-old daughter Jailyn, who died when Candelario went on vacation in June 2023, Cuyahoga County prosecutor’s office announced in a press release .

The sentencing comes after Candelario entered guilty pleas in February for one count of aggravated murder in connection with the death of her toddler and one count of endangering children, according to online Cuyahoga County court records .

Candelario left her 16-month-old daughter unattended at her Cleveland home from June 6 to June 16, 2023, the prosecutor’s office added in its release.

When she returned to the residence at around 8:00 a.m., she found her daughter unresponsive and called the police, who later declared the toddler deceased at the scene. Jailyn was discovered “in a Pack-N-Play pen on a liner soiled with urine and feces with soiled blankets,” according to the release.

The toddler died of starvation and severe dehydration from pediatric neglect, Dr. Elizabeth Mooney, the deputy Cuyahoga County medical examiner, said in court Monday, per NBC News . According to Mooney, the 16-month-old was emaciated, "weighing 13 pounds, 7 pounds less than in her last doctor's visit less than two months before."

Following an investigation, Candelario was discovered to have traveled on vacation to Detroit and Puerto Rico as she left her toddler at home. She was arrested on June 17 and charged with murder and related criminal offenses.

Cuyahoga County prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley said of Candelario’s sentencing, “Today, we remember Jailyn — a beautiful baby girl who was taken from this world due to her mother’s unimaginable selfishness. The thought of going on vacation for 10 days and leaving your child to starve to death in her Pack-N-Play is a new low in parental care.”

County Common Pleas Court Judge Brendan Sheehan told Candelario she committed “the ultimate betrayal” at her sentencing on Monday, per ABC News .

Candelario, who according to the outlet struggles with depression and other mental health issues, said in response, "There's so much pain that I have in regards to the loss of my baby, Jailyn.”

"I'm extremely hurt about everything that happened. I am not trying to justify my actions, but nobody knew how much I was suffering and what I was going through ... God and my daughter have forgiven me."

According to local station  WEWS-TV , Candelario was terminated from her position as building substitute at Cleveland Elementary School Citizens Academy Glenville after her arrest last year.

As you can guess, it was to the Four Seasons.

Immediately, baby Kate raises one finger, saying, “Mee!”

So far, the video has accumulated over 60 million views, and over 7 million likes with the internet obsessed with the 1-year-old being a fully conscious baby.

One user commented, “That baby booked the trip,’'

Another user commented, “I think the baby is in charge of the family finances,”

The Four Seasons had several Disney-themed activities for Kate, according to People. The 1-year-old and her family stayed at the resort for two days. They said dhe enjoyed gold truffle pasta and an extravagant experience filled with love and laughter.

The five-star hotel shared a video of the family at the hotel on Saturday. They captioned it: “Fully conscious and utterly fabulous at Four Seasons Orlando.”

Despite being just 1 years old, Kate has been to the resort before.

“She won’t say ‘me!’ to everything,” Kate’s dad told People. “It legitimately has to be something she recognizes and wants to do. She’s been to the Four Seasons before. She does recognize certain things and she does say ‘me.’”

Police and HSE to investigate death of girl killed in mudslide on school trip

Police and health and safety investigators will probe the death of a 10-year-old girl killed in a mudslide while on a school trip.

Leah Harrison, from Darlington , died following an incident at Carlton Bank on the edge of the North York Moors on Wednesday.

The Year Six pupil was on an instructor-led walk at the council-run Carlton Adventure centre, which has suspended all its activities while an investigation is carried out.

The beautiful smile, the giddy laugh, the silly jokes. You will never ever be forgotten baby girl

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) will be carrying out a joint investigation with North Yorkshire Police into the incident, a spokesperson confirmed.

A major operation involving 30 mountain rescuers was launched to save Leah, in weather conditions they described as “very poor”, but she died at the scene.

Denise McGuckin, managing director of Hartlepool Borough Council, which operates Carlton Adventure said: ‘‘We can confirm that a tragic incident occurred during one of the Centre’s instructor-led outdoor education forest walks near to Carlton-in-Cleveland yesterday.

“We are utterly devastated and heartbroken and our thoughts are with Leah’s family and friends and all those affected.

“We are working closely with our partner agencies to carry out a full investigation and we are temporarily suspending all outdoor activities and residential breaks managed by the Council.

“Whilst the investigation is being carried out it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.”

In a statement, Leah’s family said on Thursday: “Leah Harrison, the happy, bubbly, go-lucky little girl.

“The beautiful smile, the giddy laugh, the silly jokes.

“You will never ever be forgotten baby girl.

“You will achieve your dream and become a player for the Lionesses.

“Spread those wings. May you rest in paradise.”

Leah was a pupil at Mount Pleasant Primary School, which is part of Lingfield Education Trust.

We are all in a state of shock and we would ask that the privacy of the family and the school community is respected while we try to come to terms with what has happened

Its chief executive Nick Blackburn said: “The full details are still emerging but this is clearly a heartbreaking tragedy.

“Leah was a much-loved part of our school and our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and the school staff.

“Counselling is being arranged within the school for pupils and staff.

“We are all in a state of shock and we would ask that the privacy of the family and the school community is respected while we try to come to terms with what has happened.”

The emergency services were called at around 1.15pm on Wednesday.

Gary Clarke, callout officer for Cleveland Mountain Rescue, said conditions were “very poor”.

He said: “It was very wet all day, quite foggy and misty up there and very cold and it made the conditions very hardgoing for the rescue.”

He said 19 rescuers initially turned out, increasing to 30 as the severity of the operation became apparent.

They used a “technical rope rescue system” to recover her body from the dangerous landslip, Mr Clarke said.

He said the incident happened on a path off the Cleveland Way.

“As far as we are aware, they were part of a school party, where exactly they started and where they were going, we’re not sure, we don’t get to see that side of things,” he said.

“We were acting on behalf of the police service.

It's really a matter for the police investigating now, we're not exactly sure what happened, but from what we can gather what we saw in that scene, it was just something of a freak force of nature accident. It's something that we've never seen or experienced before

“But there was just a school party out for a walk on the North York Moors which many schools do quite often, all year round.

“It’s really a matter for the police investigating now, we’re not exactly sure what happened, but from what we can gather what we saw in that scene, it was just something of a freak force of nature accident.

“It’s something that we’ve never seen or experienced before.”

The area was cordoned off throughout the afternoon and members of the public were asked to avoid the area.

North Yorkshire Police said Leah’s family were being supported by specially trained officers and the force asked for them to be given space to grieve.

3-month-old infant dies after being left in hot car outside day care in West Virginia

An infant was discovered dead in a parked vehicle outside a day care in West Virginia on Wednesday, police said.

Officers responded just after 3:00 p.m. at a day care in Morgantown, West Virginia after receiving a report of a cardiac arrest.

First responders were on the scene near a parked SUV when police arrived. Officers saw "a young child seated in a rear facing child seat in the back seat of the vehicle," Morgantown police said in a news release.

The unidentified child was pronounced dead on the scene. The State Medical Examiner's Office and local police are investigating the incident. Officials have yet to announce any charges or arrests.

Baby was left in a hot car, report says

The circumstances surrounding the child's death were not included in the news release. However, as CBS News and WDTV reported, police said it appears the 3-month-old baby was left alone in the hot vehicle while the parent was working. It's unclear how long the child was inside.

According to Weather.com , Morgantown's temperatures were in the high to mid-80s throughout the week.

"The department wishes to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends that have been directly impacted by this tragic loss as well as recognizing the devastating impact such a loss is to the community," Police Chief Eric Powell said in a statement.

The recent incident comes as the number of children dying from hot car deaths continues to increase. Janette Fennell, founder of the advocacy group Kids and Care Safety,  told USA TODAY  that more than 1,000 children have died in hot cars since 1990.

"It’s our responsibility as adults to make the environment safe, that’s exactly what we need to do here," Fennell said.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Moscow warns US of 'fatal consequences'; Russia suffers more than 1,000 casualties in 24 hours, Ukraine claims

Ukraine's grid operator has imposed daily energy restrictions across the country after critical infrastructure was damaged in Russian attacks. Meanwhile, one person has been killed and others injured in a strike on a recreation centre in the Kharkiv region.

The Institute For The Study Of War (ISW) has said allowing Ukraine to use Western air defence systems against targets in Russia is crucial to if Kyiv is going to repel Russian glide bomb and missile strikes against Kharkiv.

Following President Biden's partial lifting of restrictions on how Ukraine can use military supplies sent by the US, Kyiv can now use American weapons to strike inside Russia.

Eleven other Western countries have also recently partially or completely lifted restrictions on Ukraine's use of Western-provided weapons to strike military targets in Russian territory.

"These policy changes will allow Ukrainian forces to use Western-provided systems to strike Russian firing and staging areas in Russia's border areas and airspace," according to the ISW.

"Ukrainian officials reported that Ukrainian forces downed a number of Russian military aircraft in February 2024, many of which were conducting glide bomb strikes in the Avdiivka direction.

"Ukrainian forces' ability to down Russian military aircraft in a frontline area indicates that Ukrainian forces will likely be able to replicate the same effects with both Ukrainian and Western-provided systems to protect northern Kharkiv Oblast and Kharkiv City from Russian glide bomb strikes launched from Russian airspace. "

President Zelenskyy has previously said that Russian forces would not be able to seize Kharkiv City if Ukrainian forces received two Patriot air defence systems to deploy to the region.

According to the ISW, deployment of these defence systems would have limited effectiveness, were they not able to strike targets in Russian airspace.

Around 1.5 million men have registered for conscription in Ukraine, the defence ministry has said.

After the new law on mobilisation came into force on 18 May, military-aged men were given 60 days to update their personal data so that the state could locate them.

According to a video posted on the ministry's YouTube channel, the majority of the updates were done on the new Reserve+ online app.

In addition to using the app, Ukrainians can update their data in person at public service centres or enlistment offices.

The ministry added that 14,000 men living abroad across 124 countries had updated their credentials.

Ahead of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Britain's defence chief Admiral Sir Tony Radakin spoke about the comparisons made between the Second World War and the conflict in Ukraine.

He told Sky News he is confident we are not heading towards another world war and has every faith Ukraine would prevail in its fight.

Admiral Radakin added that by the end of June, 500,000 Russians would have died or been injured in the conflict.

Kazan's airport has imposed temporary flight restrictions for safety reasons today, Russia's aviation watchdog has said.

This is usually done in expectation of Ukrainian drone attacks.

Kazan is the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan and is located about 500 miles east of Moscow.

The region has been repeatedly attacked by drones in recent  months, an indication that Ukraine has dramatically improved its ability to strike deep within Russian territory.

Ukraine has claimed the Russian military has suffered 1,270 casualties in the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian general staff said on Monday.

If that toll, released by the Ukrainian general staff this morning, is correct, it would be one of the highest daily Russian casualty figures since the war began.

Kyiv has regularly claimed that Moscow's forces have lost more than 1,000 men a day since Russia launched a new offensive in the Kharkiv region last month.

The Kharkiv region, which borders Russia, and Kharkiv city, the administrative centre of the region, have been battered nearly daily, since the attacks intensified.

The news comes on the heels of last week's decision by President Joe Biden to approve the use of US supplied weapons to hit targets inside Russia that were involved in attacks on Ukraine's Kharkiv region.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Donald Trump risks being a "loser president" if he retakes the White House and imposes a bad peace deal on Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president said he had "no strategy yet" for what to do if Trump wins in November and that Boris Johnson had approached the Republican on his behalf, according to The Guardian.

He said if Trump were re-elected, the Republican could impose a crushing defeat on Ukraine, should he so chose.

It's widely thought Trump may end US military support for Ukraine if he gets into the White House.

"Ukraine, barehanded, without weapons, will not be able to fight a multimillion [Russian] army," Mr Zelenskyy told the paper.

"Does he want to become a loser president?" he said.

"A ceasefire is a trap," he added, saying that after a break in hostilities Vladimir Putin would "go further" and make Trump look "very weak" in the eyes of the world.

Donald Trump has previously claimed he could "end the war in 24 hours".

We're getting more warnings from Russia to the US now.

The foreign ministry told the US not to make any "mistakes that may have fatal consequences" with regards to allowing Ukraine to strike targets on Russian soil, the Interfax news agency reported.

It comes after the foreign ministry earlier warned that Ukraine using Patriot air defence systems in Russia would escalate the conflict.

Beijing has hit back at Volodymyr Zelenskyy after he accused the country of helping Russia disrupt a global peace conference in Switzerland.

China has said it would not be attending the summit because Russia would not be taking part alongside Ukraine.

The Chinese foreign ministry said it believes all efforts should be recognised by all in supporting peace measures around the Russia-Ukraine war.

Beijing has never "fanned fire or fuelled the flames", said ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, addressing a question on the peace summit.

She added that there was "no situation of China exerting pressure on other countries".

In the same press conference, Ms Mao also said China wanted to "deepen oil and gas cooperation with Russia".

Yesterday, speaking at the Shangri-La defence forum in Singapore, Asia's premier security conference, Mr Zelenskyy said China is pressuring other countries and their leaders not to attend the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, scheduled for 15-16 June.

"Russia, using Chinese influence in the region, using Chinese diplomats also, does everything to disrupt the peace summit," he said.

"Regrettably this is unfortunate that such a big independent powerful country as China is an instrument in the hands of Putin."

Russia has said discussions over allowing Ukraine to use Patriot MIM-104 air defence systems over Russian territory show the West is on a "path of escalation".

The state-run TASS news agency cited Moscow's foreign ministry as making the remarks today.

"Russia will take all measures to thwart such threats," the ministry added.

In April, the Pentagon said it would "rush" Patriot air defence missiles and artillery ammunition to Ukraine as part of its new $6bn military aid package.

However, Patriot systems for launching the missiles will not be sent, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said at the time.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been forthright in saying the weapons are needed urgently and their absence is costing Ukrainian lives.

"Patriot" stands for "Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target" and is a long-range, all-altitude, all-weather air defence system designed to counter tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced aircraft.

The American-made missiles are produced by Raytheon in Massachusetts and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in Florida.

The system is used by the US and some of its allies, including Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Poland, Sweden, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Romania, Spain, and Taiwan.

Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto has said his country has not yet decided whether to join a global peace summit aimed at helping to end the war in Ukraine.

He said that while he respected efforts by Switzerland to achieve peace, he doubted whether the summit made sense if "there aren't both parties to the war" present.

Russia will not attend the summit, which is being held later this month.

Hungary has repeatedly opposed Ukraine's accession to NATO and the EU, sanctions on Russia, undermined Western aid efforts for Ukraine, and maintained close relations with Moscow throughout the full-scale war.

In mid-May, it vetoed a Council of Europe resolution to officially recognise and support Volodymyr Zelenskyy's 10-point peace formula.

"If both sides of the war are not represented, I think it is a legitimate question whether the whole summit makes sense in terms of the ultimate goal, which is to seek peace," Mr Szijjarto said.

"We [Hungary] believe that the peace summit has real meaning and gives the greatest hope for peace if both sides are at the table."
